On September 10th, HBO Championship Boxing featured a double header of Erik “El Terrible” Morales vs. Zahir Raheem and Manny “Pac-Man” Pacquiao vs. Hector Velasquez. Aside from making money, the idea of this promotion was to showcase superstars Morales and Pacquiao for a 2006 rematch of their thriller from earlier this year, so that they could make even more money.

Our June Edition of The Boxing Channel chronicled Showtime’s steady march toward becoming the premiere boxing network. The race is tightening, not surprising because trying to defeat HBO in boxing is akin to conquering Lance Armstrong in the Tour de France. Simply put, Showtime doesn’t have the budget or subscribers enjoyed by HBO. But despite the competitive disadvantage, Showtime fields a team that is dedicating to providing great fights on the first Saturday of every month, and their Shobox series is one of a kind. The boxing public benefits from their spirited rivalry with HBO.
