2005 was another great year in boxing. Sure we had our share of bad decision and tragedy. But new stars were born and great fights were seen such as the memorable Castillo-Corrales wars. With as many good fights as we saw this past year, 2006 already looks to be even a bigger year with Judah-Mayweather, Mormeck-Bell, a third Castillo – Corrales war to name a few. 2005 Year In Review
ANGELO DUNDEE: TRAINER OF CHAMPIONS
Angelo Dundee didn’t just train fighters, he trained stars. His impressive list of 15 world champions, [Carmen Basillio, Sugar Ramos, Luis Rodriguez, Ralph Dupas, Willie Pastrano, Muhammad Ali, Jimmy Ellis, Jose Napoles, Sugar Ray Leonard, Pinklon Thomas, Slobodan Kacar, Michael Nunn, George Foreman, George Scott, and Adilson Rodriguez], included some of the most charismatic pugs in modern times. He loved them all much in the way a father loves his sons. He relishes in the varied memories, but is reluctant to pick a favorite. But listen closely and you can detect a decided affinity to the Greatest of All Time- Muhammad Ali.
DON KING KONG

Now that his new protégé, hirsute giant Nicolay Valuev, has wrapped his massive paws around the WBA heavyweight championship, His Hairness appears to finally have succeeded: He’s now Don King Kong, promoter of the biggest thing to come along since the most famous ape in cinematic history hit Manhattan, or at least since Primo Carnera was on the marquee at Madison Square Garden.
No stop to the glop
Controversy in boxing is sort of like the congealed glop that passes for melted cheese when you go to a movie and order those overpriced concession-stand nachos. Said glop is not good for your health (neither are the nachos) and you’re virtually certain to spill some on your shirt, but, hey, you already know that for health’s sake you should order the bottled spring water to wash down the smuggled apple you could have hidden in your jacket. But guilty pleasures wouldn’t be pleasurable without the guilt, would they? So a lot of us turn off our consciences and go for the glop, the XXXL-sized soda and enough candy to induce diabetic shock.
BOBBY MAGRUDER’S OCTOBERFEST
Every fall Bobby Magruder stages his annual pro boxing show at the Jaycees Community Center in Waldorf Maryland. The fighters are gritty and exciting, if not particularly skilled in a technical sense, and put on a great show for the bargain price of $40.
