Viloria Decisions Iribe in Honolulu

Returning local hero Brian Viloria successfully defended his IBF Light Flyweight title on Saturday night at the Neal S. Blaisdell Center in Honolulu, Hawaii with a largely one-sided twelve-round decision win over IBF #15 ranked contender Jesus Iribe. Viloria’s title defense was the first world championship fight to take place in the state since 1976 and could elevate him into a much talked about unification bout against WBO Light Flyweight titleholder Ivan Calderon later this year.
Fernando Guerrero Headlines a Night Full of Knockouts
Tunica, MS – There is a moment in the first Rocky film where Paulie brings Rocky back to his home in the hope that Rocky will take his sister Adrian out on a date. When they show up Adrian doesn’t want to go and Paulie screams “I want you out of here instamatically.” Shortly thereafter she and Rocky depart and the rest is history. Someone may have given the same ultimatum to all of Prize Fight Promotions’ fighters before their bouts on Saturday night, as they all showed a tremendous sense of urgency in getting their opponents out as quickly as possible.

Urango stops Bailey in eleven to retain IBF Jr. Welter crown

Juan Urango’s consistent pressure proved to be too much for former World Champion Randall Bailey as he retained the IBF Light welterweight title with a 11th round stoppage. The end came at 1:51 of round 11 with Urango was knocking a visibly worn Bailey around the ring with huge left hands and right hooks. The first 6 rounds were close, back and forth action of a stalking Urango and a counterpunching Bailey. Bailey knocked Urango down with a blistering right hand in the 6th round and I was uncertain that Urango would beat the count, but he did and raised his hands as if to say I am ok. Urango came out of that knockdown and applied relentless pressure on a very tired Bailey. Urango dropped Bailey twice in the ninth with a huge straight left hand and again with a right hook. That was the beginning of the end as Urango finished the night with pressure and prompted Baileys corner saved their fighter at 1:51 of the 11th.

Best heavyweights are on either of the line of scrimmage
There are no more great American heavyweights. They are all linebackers, defensive backs, linemen, an occasional receiver or even quarterback. That, at least, is the theory about an endangered species that has been about as lively as a blocking dummy for years.

Promoter Lou DiBella is a big baseball fan. A big enough fan to own his own minor league baseball team. And like any baseball team, it must shake off yesterday’s heartbreak because tomorrow comes quick. Dibella suffered a heartbreaking loss and one of his main fighters, Paulie Malignaggi dropped a controversial unanimous decision to Juan Diaz in Houston over the weekend in a bout the boxing world is still talking about today. What is also a parallel to baseball, DiBella acquired some tremendous young talent in what was baseball’s trading month’s of June and July and some of that talent will be on display as part of another installment of Broadway Boxing on Wednesday night at BB King’s in New York City.
UFC 102 PREDICTIONS

Randy Couture vs. Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira (Hwt.)
Randy Couture finally takes on Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira in a battle of MMA heavyweight legends. What does Nogueira have left after the loss to Mir? He looked terrible in the defeat, but soon after the fight, rumors started circulating amount Nogueira having multiple ailments including a staph infection that should have precluded him from fighting. However, we shouldn’t forget that Nogueira also looked poor against Tim Sylvia before pulling off the submission. It’s impossible to question Nogueira’s heart or, for that matter, his MMA skill. He’s fantastic on the ground, and he is a technically sound boxer. On the other hand, Couture is an awesome MMA fighter. He has no glaring weakness except for submissions, and he prepares extremely well for all of his fights. Couture’s edge is going to be standing where he’ll have the ability to strike or slow the fight down by pushing Nogueira into the cage. Based on their past few fights, Couture is just in better shape than Nogueira. For that reason, the pick is Randy Couture by unanimous decision.

Malignaggi tells us why not

There’s a reason Saturday’s fight was in Houston, with its advantages of crowd, canvas, referee and judges. There’s a reason Houston’s Juan Diaz, 1-2 in his last three fights, was the promotional A-side. There’s a reason Brooklyn’s Paulie Malignaggi had to make a first fight in the imaginary 138 1/2 pound weight class.
