I ran out of excuses for Roy Jones Jr. The weight loss, the cut-man, his father, the taping of the hands in Australia. I think we heard every excuse we need at this point. Some nights he shows up and rips apart a B fighter like Lacy, and the next fight he’s dropped by a B- Aussie. What has escaped Roy as he has aged is motivation and a sincere & consistent dedication to a fight plan inside the ring. When he commits himself he still shows us flashes of the speed and power that made him the best fighter of the 1990s. And when he doesn’t commit to a plan, he ends up on his back staring at the bright lights or pointing his finger at everyone in his corner.

Saturday, March 21st, 2009, Superman will return to his Fortress of Solitude in Pensacola, FL. But a lot has changed since 1999 when he walked over an over-matched Richard Frazier. I can still hear Jim Lampley saying, “Down goes Frazier” as Roy walked through another opponent with the slightest of ease. He was on top of the world, entering the prime of his career, steamrolling over every opponent and eventually capturing a share of the legitimate heavyweight crown in March of 2003. Yes, life was VERY good for Roy Jones, Jr.

He’s Back.

It was a packed house Saturday at the Mississippi Coast Coliseum in Biloxi. Roy Jones Jr. entered the ring wearing a gladiator costume while mouthing the lyrics to his very own “And Still”. The wait was finally over. Weeks of questions, “is there anything left in the tank”, “is he crazy for fighting a young, hungry, undefeated prospect”, were finally ready to be answered at the opening bell.
