Explosive Fight Promotions will host its first MMA event of the New Year on Saturday, January 9th, 2010 at Pronio Sports in Akron, Ohio. Tickets for the event are $25 & $35. Pronio Sports is located at 2420 Wedgewood Dr. in Akron, Ohio. Doors will open at 5:00pm with the first bell ringing at 7:00pm.

WBO#7, WBA#14 heavyweight contender, Brian “The Beast” Minto (34-2 21kos) wants a shot at WBC#4, WBO#10 Chris Arreola (27-1 24kos) on Dec. 5th on HBO. Minto states, “We both have a great deal of heart and skill, and our styles would make for an exciting and fan-friendly type fight. Lyell Set to Defend Title!

IBF#13, WBC#17 middleweight contender Billy Lyell (20-7 4kos) will defend his NABC Inter-Continental Middleweight crown on October 17th in his hometown of Niles, Ohio. A winner of four of his last five including an upset over previously unbeaten contender, John Duddy (26-1), Lyell will headline the event beginning at 8pm at the Expo Center in Niles versus an opponent to be determined in the ten rounder. Presented by Bowers’ Productions, the six bout card will also feature local junior middle Durrell Richardson (11-3 4kos), welterweight Jake Giuriceo (4-0 2kos) and heavyweight Brandon Winner (3-6) in separate bouts. Do not tell Nick “The Stone Man” Firtha that the Gold Rush is over. “I am heading north in search of gold” stated the Akron, Ohio fighter. Fritha 16-5-1 (7ko) will challenge Ty Fields 41-2 (37ko) for the WBA Native American Heavyweight Championship. Both fighters are seeking to get back in the win column as Firtha lost a very disputed decision in April over Neven Pajkic while Fields is coming off a devestating first round KO to the hands of MonteBarrett in June of 2008.

Pavlik dominates Rubio to keep Middleweight crown


The once booming steel town of Youngstown, Ohio was once again revitalized as hometown hero Kelly “The Ghost” Pavlik defended his WBC/WBO Middleweight World Championship with a dominating TKO victory over the WBC’s #1 ranked contender Marco Antonio Rubio. Pavlik moves to 35-1, 31 knockouts while Rubio falls to 43-5-1, 38 knockouts. Pavlik controlled the majority of the fight establishing his jab and quickly fighting off Rubio’s counter punching. The only time Rubio showed any sign of life was during the 6th round. Other than that this fight was executed perfectly by Pavlik. Pavlik’s trainer Jack Loew stated that “We punched him back with the jab and we kept him going backwards. That was our plan and Pavlik executed it perfectly.” An emotional Pavlik said “There is no place like home..It was electric…I put the loss behind me..Rubio was tougher than expected. “ When asked about his future plans Pavlik said “I will fight anyone out there. I hope to be back near my hometown of Youngstown, Ohio in the summer.”

In front of 3,000 fans inside the Chevrolet Center, Kelly Pavlik and Marco Antonio Rubio took the final steps in their preparation for tomorrow nights WBC/WBO Middleweight Title Fight. The Middleweight Champion weighed in at 159lbs. Rubio the challenger weighed in at 160lbs. The electricity inside the Chevrolet Center reached the decibels of a sold out arena as the Youngstown faithful keep watch on their hometown hero Pavlik.
