Junior Featherweight Jonathan Oquendo 16- 2(10KO) was en route to a victory in a scheduled 8 round main event facing southpaw Felix Flores 14 -10-1 (11KOS). Both fighters came out for the opening bell with a more seek than destroy approach but a fight soon broke out in the second with Oquendo flooring the Colombian based Flores with a straight right hand. The end came after a low blow floored Flores again experienced referee Frank Gentile waved the fight off at 1:57 of round five.
Welterweight Jorge Melendez made his USA debut and showed his hard hitting talent while tagging a very game and entertaining Gerardo Cesar Prieto fighting out of Provo Utah by way of Mexico. The Mexican fighter was game and quite the crowd pleaser for the small but boisterous Mexican contingent. In the 6th and final round Melendez came out firing uppercut after uppercut badly bruising and bloodying the tough but outclassed Mexican fighter. The fight was stopped after the ref waved off Prieto’s half hearted attempt to get off the canvas.
Cuban amateur standout and unbeaten Stalin Lopez got off to a slow start but found his rhythm late in the first and carried on into the second with the Puerto Rican Javier Garcia. At 1:22 of the second, a brutal unintentional clash of heads caused a nasty gash over the head of the Colombian. By the advice of ringside physician Allen Fields, the fight was stopped and due to Florida Boxing commission rules the fight was called a No- Contest. I had Stalin winning both rounds at the time of the head butt.
Dyah “Ali” Davis 14-1 (7KO) was impressive with a near shut out over Jr. Emannuel Gonzalez 9-5 (4KO). Davis, the son of 1976 Olympic Games Gold medalist and ex-professional boxer Howard Davis, commanded the fight with great combinations and body work. The cards read 57 -57 59-55 58-56 at a majority decision.
Eric Cruz 7- 2 (7KO) made a successful American debut with a fourth round TKO over Derrick “The Dragon” Moon 13-30. The end came at 1:05 of round 4.
Miami native Heavyweight, José Luis Roque 3-0 (3KO) stayed perfect with a 2nd KO win over noticeably inexperienced Miguel Ramos 0-2 . The end came at 2:42 round 2.
Cuban Heavyweight Henry Fuentes 9-1 (5KO) got back to his winning ways with a unanimous decision win over Jerry Butler 8-6 (8KO). The cards read 60-54.
Accomplished amateur Abdulah Dobey improved to 2-0 (2KO) with a 2nd round TKO over Joel Lopez 0-3
