Dirrell spectacular in stopping
Hanshaw in five
By Marc Abrams
Andre Dirrell made up for
some lackluster performances by definitively
stopping Anthony Hanshaw in round five of a
scheduled ten round Super Middleweight fight
at The Chumash Casino in Santa Ynez, California.
Early it did not look to
be Dirrell's night as Hanshaw jumped on Dirrell
and landed series of punches that looked like
it sent Dirrell to the canvas for a knockdown.
Referee Pat Russell ruled the action a slip
which was the high point of Hanshaw's evening.
Dirrell got his jab pumping in round two and
that seemed to jumpstart the former Olympian.
Dirrell landed a big left that had Hanshaw holding
on in round three. In round four, Dirrell started
ripping hooks from his "switch hitting"
stance and Hanshaw started holding on. Dirrell
landed a big straight left and with the aid
of a slight push Hanshaw went to the canvas
at the bell which was scored a knockdown.
With both guys bleeding from
the nose in round five, Dirrell landed a barrage
of hard, flush punches with both hands and Direll
was all over Hanshaw. Russell jumped in after
a wobbly Hanshaw was hurt at 1:13 of round five.
With the victory, Dirrell,
168 1/4 lbs of Flint, Michigan is now 15-0 with
ten knockouts. Hanshaw, 169 lbs of Massillion,
Ohio is now 21-2-1.
Antonio Demarco scored an
exciting fifth round stoppage over Juan Castaneda
in an action filled lightweight bout that was
scheduled for eight rounds.
Demarco came out strong as
he unleashed heavy combinations in the first
frame. In round two, Demarco landed a right
to the body and then a left that sent Castaneda
down. Round three was a great round as Demarco
dropped Cataneda with a big right hand only
to see Castaneda get up and eventually stun
Demarco with a big left of his own. Demarco
started round four with heavy body shots. Castaneda
mounted a mini comeback with two lefts to the
body. Demarco ended the round with a big right.
Demarco landed a big combination
and then a big left that left Ray Corona to
stop the fight at forty-four seconds of round
five.
With the win, Demarco, 135
lbs of Tijuana, Mexico is now 19-1-1 with fourteen
knockouts. Castaneda, 134 1/2 lbs of La Paz,
Mexico is now 12-1
