COMMISSION WELCOMES RETURN
OF PROFESSIONAL BOXING TO DC ARMORY
For
Immediate Release
(This event is in
association with ESPN2 Friday Night Fights)
(Washington, DC)-The DC Sports
& Entertainment Commission (DCSEC) welcomes
the return of professional boxing to the DC
Armory with a live event, DC Fight Night-ROUND
ONE! This exciting card features former Middleweight
Champion and Washington, DC native William Joppy,
and two of ESPN2's world ranked fighters on
Friday, April 27th.
"This is just the first
of many professional boxing events we hope to
attract to the nation's capital," said
Matthew Cutts, the new Chairman of the DCSEC
Board of Directors. "We expect that a spectacular
event like this will put DC back on the map
so that we can attract championship bouts in
the future. We also expect that having live
professional boxing will increase youth participation
in the sport, providing yet another constructive
activity for our young people."
The DC Armory is in the first
stage of renovations in order to better accommodate
a wider variety of sporting, civic and entertainment
events. The main show floor has been completely
refurbished and other operational systems and
facilities are to be significantly upgraded
in the future. Capacity for the Armory is 10,000,
however, for the boxing match, the facility
is set for a more intimate gathering of 4,500
allowing excellent views into the ring.
The event is produced by
Ron Remus Productions in association with Carlos
Llinas CLIP Boxing and features the talents
of the hottest up and coming prospects in the
country as well as one of the sport's most respected
veterans. This is the first professional card
at the DC Armory in over four years. The most
recent boxing event at the DC Armory was the
2003 Don King production "DC Dynamite"
featuring two World Championship fights featuring
DC's own WBO Jr. Welterweight Champ DeMarcus
"Chop Chop" Corley vs. former Champ
Randall Bailey, and two-time Flyweight Champ
Rosendo "El Buffalo" Alvarez vs. former
WBA Champ Beibis Mendoza.
"With the full support
of the DC City Council and the DC Sports &
Entertainment Commission, I am honored to bring
professional boxing to Washington, DC. It is
with great enthusiasm that we return this exciting
and invigorating sport to our nation's capital.
This extraordinary event will be the first of
many phenomenal boxing events to follow,"
said Remus.
The DC Armory is located at 2001 East Capital
Street, SE, and is easily accessible by Metro
at the Stadium-Armory stop on the Orange/Blue
line. Doors open at 6:00 p.m. and the first
fight starts at 7:00 p.m. Parking is available
adjacent to the facility. Tickets are available
through Ticketmaster by phone at (202) 397-SEAT
