San Juan, P.R.- Yesterday’s press conference at the Roberto Clemente Coliseum almost ended in a fight when WBA Junior Middleweight belt holder Daniel Santos had some words for Kermit “The Killer” Cintrón. Cintrón (31-2-1 27KO’s) is set to fight Saturday night against Brazilian Juliano Ramos (15-2 12 KO’s).
After the card’s promoters and boxers finished talking and were ready to answer questions from the press, Santos raised his hand as if he were part of the press and started blasting Cintrón for, among other things, having criticized Santos’ performance against Antonio Margarito back in 2004. In that fight Santos came out the winner by split decision when a head butt induced cut forced the fight to be stopped before the tenth round was over.
Santos was quick to point out Cintron’s knockout losses against Margarito saying he made a ridicule of himself. He would also call Cintrón the equivalent of a “crybaby” for his teary performances after some of his bouts and topped it off by saying that he got gifts on his two last fights against Sergio Martinez whom he fought to a draw most thought Martinez should have won and when he beat Alfredo Angulo by a close decision.
Santos’ trainer and Cintron’s promoter also got a little into the hype and finally Cintrón took the microphone. Kermit was unnecessarily polite when speaking as he limited himself to wishing Santos luck on his next fight (he’ll be facing Yuri Foreman on the Cotto/Pacquiao undercard) and telling him that after he won they could fight in Puerto Rico.
Regarding tomorrow’s bouts, Cintrón was short on words merely expressing his confidence in victory and a good fight while once again expressing his happiness and excitement regarding his first fight in his native Puerto Rico.
Ramos on his behalf said he saw himself winning maybe even by knockout. He said he’s faced fighters like Cintrón who try to use their height and reach advantage and that will be no problem. About fighting in Puerto Rico he said it was an honor fighting on the island that has produced over fifty world champions.
The co-stellar bout features Jonathan “Polvo” Oquendo (16-2 10KO’s) and Juan José Beltrán (19-14-3 11KO’s) in an eight rounder set at 124lbs.
