PENSACOLA, Fla. (March 21, 2009) — Fighting at home for the first time in a decade, 8-time world champion Roy Jones, Jr. (53-5, 39 KOs) fought before a packed house of loyal fans and gave them exactly what they came for with a dazzling display of superior quickness and athleticism en route to a fifth-round stoppage of 4-time world title challenger Omar Sheika for the vacant NABO championship last night in Pensacola, Florida.
Jones-Sheika (27-8) headlined tonight’s hybrid pro boxing/mixed-martial-arts show, presented by Jones’ Square Ring Promotions in association with Hirsch Borao Boxing, on pay-per-view live from the Pensacola Civic Center.
The rejuvenated Jones put on another boxing clinic, firing a wide assortment of head and body punches that consistently landed from every conceivable angle from start to finish on the rugged but overmatched Sheika, who simply had no answers for the test given by the future Hall of Fame-bound Jones.
“I want to give thanks to Pensacola in the house,” Jones announced from the center of the ring after the fight. I felt really good. I’m ready. With my father, Coach Merk and my team I’m more comfortable. Do you want me back? (Roy asked the crowd that responded with a thunderous yes). I’ll be coming back.”
Jeff Monson W, Unanimous Decision
The final undercard of the evening featured two experienced MMA heavyweights.
Roy Nelson of Las Vegas took down Jeff Monson early in the first round. For most of the round, they remained on the mat, Nelson on top, with little action. Eventually a Monson escape pleased the crowd. The fighters remained on their feet for the remainder of the round but no significant punches were landed.
In the 2nd round, it was once again Nelson taking Monson to the mat early. Monson once again escaped and got to his feet. Moments later, Nelson took Monson down again, and yet again, Monson escaped and got back on his feet. In between takedowns, there was not much action. No significant punches were landed.
In the 3rd and final round, a boxing match broke out. Monson seemed to have landed the more significant punches of the round as neither fighter lost his footing for more than a second. In the end, the judges had it 29-28 for Jeff Monson, much to the dismay of the crowd. 15rounds.com scored it 29-28 for Nelson.
Flores wins NABO Junior Heavyweight Championship via Unanimous Decision
In the first of two boxing matches on the Pay-per-view portion of the show, it was BJ Flores using a stiff jab and stellar body work and throwing punches in bunches that led to a win by Unanimous Decision. The judges had it 98-92, 99-91, 99-91 for Flores.
15rounds.com ringside card read 99-91 for Flores.
Lashley wins Unanimous Decision
In the 3rd televised bout of the evening, Bob Lashley took on veteran Jason Guida in a match that almost didn’t wait for Saturday. Roy Jones had to step between the two on Wednesday at the final Presser. The bad blood also boiled into the weigh-in on Friday. As Lashley made his ringwalk, Guida laughed at him from the ring and waved him in.
Most of the first round was spent in the red corner without much action. The only real action was a flurry of punches late in the round by Lashley.
In round two, Lashley slammed Guida to the mat hard. Guida never got back to his feet as Lashley controlled the action for the entire round.
Round 3 was more of the same, Guida playing defense as Lashley took him down and controlled the action from the top.
In the end, the judges had it 30-27 across the board for Lashley in a fight that never lived up to the pre-fight hype.
Din Thomas W, TKO 1
In the second televised bout of the evening, Din Thomas of Port St. Lucie, FL took on Gabe Lemley of Des Moines, IA. Late in round 1, a violent right knee to the face of Gabe Lemley abruptly dropped him to his knees and the referee stopped the fight at 4:13 of round 1.
MMA 3 Rounds-Light Heavyweights
In the first televised bout of the evening, Dennis Hallman of Seattle made the hometown favorite, Danny Ruiz, tap out at 1:50 of the 1st round.
Fight #4: Eric Clinton W, Unanimous Decision
In a Light Heavyweight boxing match-up scheduled for 4 rounds, Richmond Dalphone floored Eric Clinton late in the first round with a left hook. Clinton beat the referee’s count and fought back brilliantly in rounds 2 and 3, hurting Dalphone in the corner at times. In round 4, Clinton was the agressor and stole the fight from Dalphone. Judges’ scores were 38-37 across the board for Clinton.
Fight #3: Kieyon Bussey W, Majority Decision
In a boxing match-up of Bantamweights scheduled for 6 rounds, Robert DaLuz, the underdog from Jacksonville, FL, fought back from an early deficit but still fell short on the judges’ cards. Scores were 57-57, 58-56, 58-56 in favor of Bussey. Bussey was booed by his hometown when the decision was announced because the crowd appreciated Daluz’s efforts. DaLuz left the ring to a standing ovation.
