Iron Boy and Rocky Make Seven Day Weigh-in

Guaynabo, P.R.- Undefeated Puerto Rican champions Iván “Iron Boy” Calderón and Román “Rocky” Martínez easily dealt with the seven day weigh-in for their respective September 12th matches. Calderón, WBO Flyweight champion and Martínez, WBO Jr. Lightweight champion, will headline “Undefeated Champions” at the José Miguel Agrelot Coliseum in San Juan, Puerto Rico. Iván weighed in at a slim 109lbs. of a maximum of 113.4 and Román tipped the scale at 134.25lbs. of a 136.5lbs limit.

The Iron Boy (32-0-1, 6KO’s) will have his hands full with Filipino Rodel Mayol (25-3-1, 19KO’s) who fought him to a 6th round technical draw this past June. About that fight, Calderón accepted he was a little surprised by Mayol’s decision to box more rather than being aggressive. He added that Mayol showed him nothing to scare him coming into this fight and is confident his “hit and don’t get hit” style will lead him to a victory this time. He added that he’s been leaving the gym at around 108lbs this week and is feeling strong for the fight.

The 5’ champion for six years now (he won his first belt at the minimum weight limit May of 2003) had been out of the ring close to a year prior to his last bout with Mayol which could have affected his performance. He believes he has his timing and speed back and the rounds he fought helped him shake off the accumulated ring rust.

Martinez also took the time to speak with 15rounds.com and commented on his training and development as a young champion. About his opponent, Vicente Martín Rodríguez (25-2, 13KO’s) by way of Buenos Aires, Argentina, Rocky stated that he has not seen anything but has heard he has good movement. Regarding his training, Martínez said fans can expect a new Rocky. Having been tagged and dropped in his fight against Nicky Cook, the young champion said he has been working on his movement and defense looking to receive less punishment. Martínez is a naturally aggressive fighter who fights stronger once hit so it should be interesting to see how he develops his new attributes.

Hard hitting former Puerto Rican Olympian Carlos Negrón (4-0, 4KO’s) will open the transmission in a six round bout against Larry Carter (3-4-1, 3KO’s). Negrón will be fighting his first six rounder after being dropped in his last fight against Geovante Davis (3-3-1 2KO’s). in that fight, Negrón got up and finished Davis in the second round.

The card, promoted by PR Best Boxing, will feature ten bouts and the headliners will be aired by Pay-Per-View in Puerto Rico and the United States range from $20.00 to $300.00 and are available at Ticket Pop (www.ticketpop.com).
