Wladimir Klitschko added some more hardware to his already full closet of belts as he won the RING Magazine Heavyweight title with a dominat stoppage following the ninth round in front of 65,000 people in Gelsenkirchen, Germany.
Klitschko was efficient with his powerful jabs and mixed in some booming right hands. it was that combination that put Chagaev on the deck in round two. Despite Chagaev’s attempt at getting inside the long reach of Klitschko with some Tyson-esque bobbing and weaving, the jab of Klitschko continued to find the mark and every so often it was a huge right that Chagaev would eat squarly on his face.
The right hands showed their effects as Chagaev started to bleed around his left eyebrow which was clearly caused from a punch.
For most of the fight and unlike most of Klitschko’s recent opponents, Chagaev came to win until he felt the blood arounds his eye and in the ninth round he didint seem as eager to come inside. The fight was stopped in the corner in between round’s nine and ten with Klitschko winning just about every second of the fight.
Klitschko, 240 lbs of Kiev, Ukraine is now 53-3 with 47 knockouts as he adds the Ring belt to the IBF/WBO straps to his collection. Chagaev sufferes his first loss and is now 25-1-1.
The fight was made on two weeks notice as Klitschko’s fight with David Haye fell out due to an injury to Haye, while Chagaev had some medical issues that caused the cancellation of his rematch with Nikolai Valuev on May 31st
