Mayweather vs. Marquez
September 19, 2009
MGM Grand Las Vegas, Nevada
By: George M. Phillips
HE IS BACK!! A twenty one month lay off had no effect on Floyd Mayweather. Mayweather dominated Mexican folk hero Juan Manuel Marquez over 12 rounds and won an easy UD. Mayweather punched and counter punched his noticeably slower opponent at will. It appeared that the fight was going to be dominated by Mayweather as he dropped Marquez with a left hook with 1:36 left in the second round.. The remainder of the fight was simply target practice for Mayweather as Marquez stood no chance of doing any damage to the visibly faster and stronger Mayweather. WHO IS THE POUND FOR POND KING?

Cornelius Lock captured the NABO title with a fifth round TKO over previously unbeaten Orlando Cruz. Lock began his dominance of the fight by dropping Cruz with 36 seconds left in the first round. Lock avoided a wild upper cut by Cruz and countered with a right hook and follow up left that sent Cruz crashing to the canvas. In the fifth round Lock, once again, floored Cruz with an inside right hook. Referee Robert Byrd stopped the contest at 2:08 of the fifth round. Lock improves to 19-4-1 (11) while Cruz drops to 16-1-1 (7).

Michael Katsidis won the vacant WBO Interim World Lightweight Title with a 12 round split decision over Vincent Escobedo. Katsidis dominated the fight. Escobedo gave a gutsy performance in which he ran out of real estate due to the constant pressure of Katsidis. Katsidis improves to 26-2-0 (21) while Escobedo drops to 21-2-0 (13).

There was no draw in the rematch between Chris John and Rocky Juarez as John retained his WBA Featherweight Title with a 12 round UD over Rocky Juarez. In the same manner as the past 46 opponents of Chris John, Rocky Juarez failed to remove John from his envelope. John, although not as impressive compared to his fights, clearly out-boxed Juarez. The only sign of life for Juarez was the final 30 seconds of the fight as he rocked John but was unable to place John on the canvas.
