Q & A with Matt Godfrey

Providence, Rhode Island product Matt “Too Smooth” Godfrey 18-1(10) took time out of his busy schedule to talk to 15rounds.com about various things including a possible summer title fight with IBF ruler Tomasz Adamek. Godfrey 28, is currently ranked 3# by the WBC& 9# by the IBF. It would present him with an opportunity to make all his dreams come true. Here’s what he had to say.
Hello Matt, welcome to 15rounds.com
Anson Wainwright - Firstly has there been any developments on our title shot at Tomasz Adamek for 10 July?
Matt Godfrey - The fight with adamek has been talked about but nothing has been made of it.
Anson Wainwright - Do you think this fight will come off? What do you think of Adamek? Do you think he’s the best Cruiserweight in the world at the moment?
Matt Godfrey - I don’t know if this fight will happen. Like I said I know that it has been talked about but nothing has materialized. Right now I believe I am the best cruiserweight in the world. I just need the opportunity to prove it.
Anson Wainwright - You fought in Germany last year against Rudolf Kraj, you lost a unanimous decision, it is your only loss, what can you tell us about the fight and the experience of fighting abroad for you?
Matt Godfrey - When you fight abroad sometimes you have to be more aggressive. You can’t wait for the fight to come to you, you have to go out and take it. I started too slow in that fight and got behind and had to play catch up. Unfortunately for me there were only 12 rounds.
Anson Wainwright - What do you consider your best performance and result as a pro to date?
Matt Godfrey - I believe it was my fight against the heavy hitting emmanuel nwodo on espn in 2008. I had to come off the canvas to take that fight back. I was down every round but was able to use my superior conditioning To get close to him and go in for the ko
Anson Wainwright - I believe you had an impressive amateur career, what can you tell us about this, the titles you won & what your final record was?
Matt Godfrey - I finished off my amateur career with 194 wins and 24 losses. I was a multiple national us and golden gloves champion. I also won a bronze medal at the pan am games in 2001 at 178lbs.
Anson Wainwright - How did you get into Boxing?
Matt Godfrey - I got into boxing with my friend and former olympian and current heavyweight contender Jason Estrada. His dad would come through the neighborhood I lived in with his pick up truck and pick up any kids who were willing to come to the gym and try boxing. Out of the dozens of kids who jumped into the back of that truck, I was the only one who stuck with it.
Anson Wainwright - What do you like to do when your not Boxing?
Matt Godfrey - There isn’t a time when I’m not putting some time or work into boxing! But when I get a free minute or two (exaggerating) I spend with my wife and 3 daughters. When training for a fight its difficult to give the time and attention that they desire. But when I do get some time I love to spend it with them.
Anson Wainwright - What do you think of the top men at Cruiserweight WBC Fragomeni, WBA Guillermo Jones IBF Adamek & WBO Afolabi?
Matt Godfrey - I think that the above named fighters are all talented in a talent rich division. I think I have all or more tools to be champion and better than they are.
Anson Wainwright - In your last fight you weighed in at 208 do you think one day you’ll fight as a Heavyweight? Is that something you see in your future?
Matt Godfrey - No. I only weighed that much because my opponent refused to make the 200lb limit. I am best at cruiserweight and plan to stay here.
Anson Wainwright - Finally do you have a message for anybody?
Matt Godfrey - Keep an eye out. I will fight for a world title this year and win it!
Thanks for your time Matt.
