There is a rich tradition amongst Philadelphia boxers. Now following in on from Bennie Briscoe, Matthew Saad Muhammad, Bernard Hopkins et al. is a new name who looks to get his name in amongst that elite band of prize fighters his name is Danny Garcia 11-0(7). Garcia narrowly failed to qualify for the 2008 Olympics. Instead of sitting around and wallowing he went straight to the pro’s where his boxer puncher style has fitted in well. He’s appeared on several big cards including Mayweather-Hatton, Pacquiao-Marquez 2 & De LA Hoya-Pacquiao to name but a few. Managed by uber shrewd Shelly Finkel & Promoted by Golden Boy the sky seems to be his limit.
Hello Danny, welcome to 15rounds.com
Anson Wainwright – You won the other week when you out pointed Cristian Favela. How did you find that fight?
Danny Garcia – It was a good experience for me to get some solid rounds in. I’m happy with the way my career is going. In my last few fights I’ve gone the distance which is good for a young fighter like me that is learning his craft.
Anson Wainwright – Any news when you maybe back in action?
Danny Garcia – Yeah it looks like I’ll be fighting on the Winky Wright vs Paul Williams’ card coming up on April 11th. No opponent has been named.
Anson Wainwright – You only narrowly missed out on fighting at the Olympics. What can you tell us about this?
Danny Garcia – I felt I was robbed in Los Angeles when I lost to Javier Molina who eventually went on to the Olympics. In the amateurs the scoring system is really bad for professional boxing. They rarely count body blows. I was happy when I turned professional. I’m hoping we’ll cross paths in the pros.
Anson Wainwright – You had a solid amateur career, what titles did you win and what was your final record?
Danny Garcia – I was the 2005 and 2006 national champion and my amateur record was 107-13
Anson Wainwright – Your from Philadelphia which is a fight town, does you find this an added pressure to carry the torch and be the next big thing from Philly?
Danny Garcia – Not really, I know that a lot of great fighters have come from Philly. I just want to make my own history and keep working toward my goal of becoming a world champion.
Anson Wainwright – How did you get into Boxing?
Danny Garcia – My father who is also my trainer got me started in boxing when I was ten years old.
Anson Wainwright – What do you like to do away from Boxing?
Danny Garcia – I like to lay low and go to the mall and hang out with my friends. I’ve put off getting into any relationships or commitments until my b boxing career is well on its way.
Anson Wainwright – What are you boxing goals?
Danny Garcia – To be a world champion and to be remembered as one of the best fighters that ever laced on a pair of gloves.
Anson Wainwright – Who is your boxing hero?
Danny Garcia – Oscar De La Hoya no doubt. I grew up watching Oscar and I’m happy to be fighting for his promotional team. He’s a great promoter.
Anson Wainwright – Finally do you have a message for your fans?
Danny Garcia – I’m a young hungry fighter from Philly who is coming to take the Jr. Welterweight division by storm. Stay tuned and thank you for the support.
Thanks for your time Young Swift.
Anson Wainwright
