Oxbow Lake Films and Indiepix Films are proud to announce the Las Vegas premiere of the documentary film ORTHODOX STANCE at the Las Vegas Jewish Film Festival on Sunday January 18th at 7 PM at the Adelson School Performing Arts Center, 9700 West Hillpointe Road, as well as the commercial release of the DVD on January 13th.
ORTHODOX STANCE is a portrait of Dmitriy Salita, a Russian immigrant, professional boxer and religious Jew, and the seemingly incompatible cultures and characters—boxing trainers, promoters and orthodox rabbis—working together to support his rare and remarkable devotion to both orthodox Judaism and the pursuit of a professional boxing title.
Bob Arum and his company Top Rank signed the still undefeated junior welterweight to his first professional contract in 2001 after Salita won the NYC Golden Gloves and the Under 19 Amateur National Championship. The film is an intimate 3-year long look at the trials and tribulations faced by an up and coming professional boxer and culminates with Salita winning his first professional title at Manhattan’s Hammerstein Ballroom in front of a rabid crowd of boxing fans and orthodox Jews. Arum appears in the film at some of Salita’s first professional fights in Las Vegas and Puerto Rico and both Arum and Salita will be on hand Sunday for the festival screening and Q & A afterward.
“Bob Arum’s appearances in the film—especially when he tells a reporter the story of how he came to work with Dmitriy—are really entertaining,” said Director Jason Hutt. “So to have both Dmitriy and Arum there for a post-screening discussion promises to be a real treat for the audience.”
Since premiering in June 2007 at the AFI/Discovery SILVERDOCS Festival, ORTHODOX STANCE has been broadcast by the BBC in the UK, the YES Network in Israel and the MSG Network in New York, theatrically released in New York and Los Angeles, and played over 40 Jewish Film Festivals around the world. It received the 2008 Documentary Award at the London Jewish Cultural Awards and was a “Critic’s Pick” of the New York Times and New York magazine.
