In his biggest leap in competition to date the now 13-0 Caleb Truax went to hell and back, emerging bruised and battered, but not without his “Golden” finish.
Truax’s cautious approach through the early rounds was quickly foiled by a fifth round spurt from Atlantic City native and super middleweight veteran Patrick Perez. Perez ended up bringing not only experience but a granite chin to St. Paul Saturday night, weathering numerous Truax power shots and firing back barrages of his own, wobbling the once Boxing Digest Prospect of the Month. Caleb Truax, however, showed wit beyond his years by masterfully tying Perez up to finish round five and begin the recovery process.
The rest of the night belonged to Truax, who turned the tide with hooks, and uppercuts, placed perfectly on the chin of Perez. Slowly but surely the pace shifted from blow for blow to a Truax commanded bout, until finally the legs of a brave Perez faltered and referee Mark Nelson called for a seventh round halt.
Following the bout Truax was all smiles, soaking in his career’s biggest win. While his theme music for the night “Beat It” paid tribute to the late king of pop, Truax seems to be on th fast track to Minnesota middleweight royalty.
In another intriguing bout, Philadelphia native Brian Cohen was in action versus Hector Ramirez. Cohen put on a power clinic, battering Ramirez to the body, sending an echo through the St. Paul armory en route to a 2nd round stoppage. Cohen moves to 13-2.
Jeremy McLaurin preserved his spotless 5-0 record with a quick knockout of Randi Ronchi, where Ronchi was sent nearly through the ropes. Ismail Muwendo continued to impress with another first round stoppage of Brandon Buckley. Charles Meir survived a slugfest with Nathan Wilkes, moving to 3-1, and Ed Perry opened the night by outclassing James Marrow for a third round stoppage, pushing Perry to 15-4.
