Swedish Olympian Anthony Yigit signs long-term deal with Team Sauerland
Team Sauerland is delighted to announce the signing of Swedish amateur star Anthony Yigit. The welterweight will be making his professional debut at Arena Nord in Frederikshavn, Denmark on April 13 as part of Team Sauerland’s Nordic Fight Night. ”I am thrilled to have signed with Team Sauerland,’’ said Yigit. ‘’I cannot wait to make my professional debut on April 13.”
A successful amateur, Yigit travelled to London for the 2012 Olympics defeating Francisco Vargas Ramirez in the first round before losing by a single point to eventual Silver medallist Denys Berinchyk in what many boxing experts described as the best fight of the competition. ”For many athletes, just to qualify for the Olympics is a lifelong dream,” said Yigit. ”When I qualified I knew that I had to show everyone that I was there to compete. I was disappointed to have lost such a close fight but the response for the fight was fantastic and it felt great to have left my mark in this way.”
Now turning professional with Team Sauerland, Yigit explains his reasons for choosing to sign with the German promoters. ”Team Sauerland is well known for taking care of their boxers and I felt that I needed to sign with a promoter that could give me what I need to develop and to be in the best possible shape when I enter the ring. I met Nisse Sauerland and we seemed to have the same idea of what a boxer needs to develop so I am looking forward to work with him.”
Promoter Nisse Sauerland shares the young Swede’s enthusiasm. ”Anthony is an extremely talented young boxer and will be a great addition to our Nordic Fight Night series,” said Sauerland. ”As an amateur he has proven himself at both domestic and international level and I am sure he will have no problems making the transition to professional boxing. There are exciting times ahead for Swedish boxing. Erik Skoglund just clinched his 15th win in as many pro fights. There are big things coming up for him. Erik has made the most of the opportunities and platform we have provided, and I´m sure Anthony can follow his path. Together they can lift Swedish boxing to new heights.”
