Jordan Shimmell returns to the ring September 11th in Las Vegas
Jordan Shimmell, 16-0 with 13 KOs, is scheduled to fight an 8 round cruiserweight bout on the undercard of a Fox Sports 1 show Thursday, September 11, 2014 in Las Vegas, NV. The show is being promoted by Golden Boy Promotions in the Joint at the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino. The show will attract a lot of attention as it is just 2 days before the big Mayweather vs Maidana rematch on PPV at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. The main event scheduled for the 11th is a heavyweight bout between #2 Luis Ortiz and #5 Lateef Kayode for the WBA Interim title.
This will be Jordan Shimmell’s fifth bout of 2014 and his 17th since turning pro on June 30, 2012. The bout is also less than 6 full weeks since Jordan’s last fight on August 1, 2014. That fight was on the undercard of ESPN’s Friday Night Fights show at the Little Creek Casino in Shelton, WA. Jordan’s opponent was former world title challenger Epifanio Mendoza who was 37-17-1 with 33 KOs heading into the fight with Jordan. Mendoza felt the sting of Jordan’s jab early in the bout and soon was being hit with hard right hands and strong body punches. Mendoza was unable to land anything meaningful against Jordan Shimmell and quickly started resorting to dirty tactics. Mendoza was cautioned numerous times for several different fouls including low blows, rabbit punches, and hitting on the break. Mendoza had a point deducted in the third round for hitting on the break after ignoring several prior warnings from the referee. In the fourth round a visibly tiring Mendoza continued to ignore the referee and had a second point deduction. Later in the round, it became apparent that Mendoza wanted to get disqualified rather than get knocked out. Jordan Shimmell was landing hard punches anytime Mendoza didn’t clinch and in the clinches Mendoza continued to deliberately foul the technically superior Shimmell. At 2:31 of the fourth round, Mendoza hit Jordan Shimmell as the referee was separating the two boxers and the referee disqualified Mendoza.
Jordan Shimmell is the USBO Cruiserweight Champion and is world ranked by the IBO and the WBC. He is ranked in the regional rankings by the NABA, NABF, NABO and USBA organizations. Jordan is one of the top cruiserweight prospects in the world.
