MIDDLEWEIGHT CHAMPION DANIEL JACOBS TO SERVE AS SHOWTIME® GUEST ANALYST FOR THIS SATURDAY’S WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP TRIPLEHEADER

Danny Jacobs
NEW YORK (Aug. 13, 2014) – One week after Daniel Jacobs became the first cancer survivor to capture a boxing world title when he knocked out Jarrod Fletcher at Barclays Center in Brooklyn, N.Y. on SHOWTIME®, the new WBA Middleweight World Champion will return to the network this Saturday, Aug. 16, as a guest analyst for the SHOWTIME CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING tripleheader live on SHOWTIME (9 p.m. ET/ 6 p.m. PT) from StubHub Center in Carson, Calif.

Jacobs will join host Brian Kenny, blow-by-blow announcer Mauro Ranallo, Hall of Fame analyst Al Bernstein and reporter Jim Gray to call a three-fight telecast headlined by a potentially explosive, high-stakes welterweight showdown between undefeated IBF Welterweight World Champion Shawn Porter (24-0-1, 15 KOs), of Akron, Ohio and fellow unbeaten British star Kell Brook (32-0, 22 KOs), of Sheffield, England.

“How cool is that? Fighting one week on one coast on SHOWTIME and then announcing the fights the very next week on SHOWTIME from the other coast,’’ said Brooklyn’s Jacobs, who will fill in for two-time former world champion Paulie Malignaggi, who will sit out this week with a family obligation. “I love this. I think announcing fits me. To be able to do something like this, to be in this position, is very important to me. Other fighters have done it as well, of course, but for me to be able to follow in their footsteps is an honor. It shows that we can not only announce fights, but we can be good at it.’’

In the two other world championship fights on SHOWTIME, WBC Super Middleweight World Champion Sakio “The Scorpion” Bika (32-5-3, 21 KOs), of Sydney, Australia, will risk his 168-pound belt against unbeaten Anthony “The Dog’’ Dirrell (26-0-1, 22 KOs), of Flint, Mich., in a rematch of their wildly exciting and controversial 12-round split draw last Dec. 7, and undefeated Omar “Panterita” Figueroa Jr. (23-0-1, 17 KOs), of Weslaco, Texas, will defend his WBC Lightweight World Championship against mandatory challenger Daniel “Tremendo” Estrada (32-2-1, 24 KOs), of Mexico City, Mex.

Jacobs will do his best to be impartial, but you know he’ll be rooting for the 29-year-old Dirrell, a fellow cancer survivor determined to attain a world title in his second attempt.

“I’ve known Anthony since the amateurs,’’ Jacobs, 27, said. “We’ve been friends since we were 16 or 17 years old. He had the battle first [with cancer], mine was after.’’

Anthony was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma in Dec. 2006 and didn’t return to the ring until Oct. 2008. Jacobs was diagnosed with osteosarcoma, a rare form of bone cancer that caused partial paralysis in his legs in May 2011. Miraculously, he was back fighting in Oct. 2012.

“When I had my very first charity fundraiser party Anthony attended,’’ Jacobs said. “Afterward, we both discussed it and decided that we should do this together, to inspire each other, to inspire others, especially after coming back the way we did to be in the positions that we are.

“This, for me, what Anthony and I have, is absolutely like a brotherhood, a fraternity between two guys who happen to be in the same tough sport as boxing. What we have set out to accomplish is bigger than boxing, bigger than me or him. This is for the world; to be an inspiration for people to give them hope. That’s what it’s about, just helping to lead the way to give people hope.’’

Not surprisingly Dirrell was one of the first of many to congratulate Jacobs shortly after his titanic triumph last Saturday. “We didn’t talk verbally but he contacted me, I think on Instagram or Facebook,’’ Jacobs said. “He said that I was an inspiration to him and that he was going to continue to keep the movement going once he gets the opportunity on Saturday.’’

During the post-fight conversation, Daniel also wished the best for Dirrell against Bika. “I definitely reached out and told him I would support him,’’ Jacobs (27-1, 20 KOs) said. “I wanted to let him know I was by his side and that I was planning on attending the fights on Aug. 16.

“I just didn’t know at the time when we were talking that I’d be calling them, too.’’

Barthelemy to defend Jr. Lightweight title against Saucedo on October

rances-barthelemy
Rances Barthelemy will defend the IBF Jr. Lightweight title against Fernando Saucedo most likely at Foxwoods in Connecticut and on Showtime according to Dan Rafael of espn.com.

“I think Barthelemy is the best 130-pound fighter in the world and Saucedo is a good boxer, strong and very durable, so he should be a good test for my guy,” said Barthelemy promoter Leon Margules. “Saucedo earned his ranking and it’s a good test for Barthelemy in his first title defense.”

“Saucedo is the most talented, available fighter willing to fight Barthelemy that is in the top 15 of the IBF rankings,” Margules said. “And he is also the highest available guy, No. 3, so we are fighting him. And top 15 and he was the highest available guy, No. 3.”

Margules said another factor in making the fight is that Saucedo is promoted by Sampson Lewkowicz, with whom Margules is close.

“We do a fare amount of business together and he is a friend,” Margules said.

POLISH POWER: M-1 Challenge heavyweight title fight Friday Grabowski vs. Tybura

ST. PETERSBURG, Russia (August 13, 2014) – This Friday’s M-1 Challenge 50: Battle on Nev in Russia features a pair of dangerous and skilled Polish heavyweights, M-1 Challenge champion Damian “Polish Pitbull” Grabowski (19-1-0, 6 KO/TKO, 6 SUB) and undefeated No. 1 contender Marcin “Tybur” Tybura (10-0-0, 4 KO/TKO, 4 SUB) in the newly elevated main event.

M-1 Challenge 50 will be streamed live in high definition on www.M1Global.TV, outdoors from the St. Petersburg city center open area. Viewers will be able to watch the preliminary fights for free and the main card for a limited offer of only $1.00 USD by logging on to register at www.M1Global.TV. Fans may watch all of the action on their computers, as well as on Andriod and Apple smart phones and tablets. (see more details below)

In the co-feature, M-1 Challenge light heavyweight champion Stephan Puetz (10-1-0, 4 KO/TKO, 3 SUB), of Germany, makes his first title defense against Brazilian challenger Luis Fernando “Hulk” Miranda (12-1-0, 4 KO/TKO, 7 SUB).

The 6′ 1″, 240-pound Grabowski (pictured above with M-1 Global CEO/Founder Vadim Finkelchtein) has won six consecutive fights, highlighted by his M-1 Challenge title-winning performance November 14, 2013 against Kenny Garner, who Grabowski put to sleep in the third round with a choke hold.

Tybura (pictured above in black) exploded onto the M-1 Challenge scene in 2013, punching his way to a first-round win by submission against Chaban Ka in the semifinals of the 2013 M-1 Grand Prix, followed by an impressive win in the tournament final versus dangerous Konstantin Gluhov, who was choked into a first-round submission. His Grand Prix championship earned the 6′ 3″, 240-pound Tybura a title shot against Grabowski, originally scheduled March 14 but postponed until August 14 due to a neck injury suffered by Grabowski. Rather than stay inactive waiting to fight Grabowski, Tybura fought the best available heavyweight, Marco Perak, and stopped the Croatian in the third round by technical knockout (punches).

“Damian is a great fighter,” Tybura said. “We know each other and I’ve supported his career. Now, my task is to stop him. I’m honored to fight him. The delay didn’t affect my preparation very much. The most difficult moment was when I found out that he was out of our fight. Luckily, I got another fight and I didn’t have to waste those preparations. I think I’m in better shape than for my last fight.

“I wouldn’t say it’s strange to be fighting a fellow Pole on an M-1 Global show, but it certainly is a big deal. I would have never thought that I would take part in this kind of fight, but I don’t mind that somebody thought this fight had to be made. It is difficult to predict what will happen and whatever plan arranged by my coach will stay a secret until the fight.”

Scheduled battle in Super Fights are Slovenian featherweight Ivan “Buki” Buchinger (26-4-0, 6 KO/TKO, 16 SUB) vs. Russian veteran Mikhail Malyutin (26-12-0, 5 KO/TKO, 8 SUB), Spanish welterweight Daniel “The Gladiator” Tabera (17-5-3, 4 KO/TKO, 6 SUB) vs. unbeaten Russian prospect Ilya Doderkin (5-0-0, 5 SUB), and Polish featherweight Kamil Maron (5-1-0, 0 KO/SUB, 2 SUB) vs. Russia’s Nikita Chistyakov (1-1-0, 1 SUB). Also fighting on the man card is German lightweight Saba Bolaghi (1-0-0, 1 SUB) vs. Russia’s Zulfikar Usmanov 6-3-0, 1 KO/TKO, 4 SUB).

Fighting on the preliminary card is Donetsk lightweight Vadim Russul (6-2-0, 1 KO/TKO/5 SUB) vs. Spain’s Issac Alvaro Barrios Perez (1-0-0 (1 KO/TKO, 0 SUB), pro-debuting welterweights Stanislav Rogov, of Russia, vs. Adam Tsurov, of the Republic of Inqushetia, and Kazakhstan middleweight Dauren Ermekov vs. Khabib Isaev, of Russian, in their professional debuts.

Four Russian lightweights will compete in the semifinals of the Ros Stroilnvest Cup – Marat Balaev (pro debut) vs. Artem Glybchak (pro debut) and Anton Telepnev (6-4-0, 1 KO/TKO. 2 SUB) vs. Artur Gadzhiev – with the two winners facing off later in the card in the championship final.

All fights and fighters are subject to change.

Undefeated Cruiserweight Junior Wright to take on Marlon Hayes this Friday night in Detroit

Chicago, IL (August 13, 2014) — This Friday night at the Royal Oak Theater in Detroit, undefeated Cruiserweight contender Junior Wright (10-0-1, 9 KO’s) will be back in action in an 8-round bout against Marlon Hayes (23-14, 11 KO’s).

This will be Wright’s first appearance since his thrilling Fight of the Year candidate with fellow undefeated Steve Bujaj on May 15 at the Millennium Theater in Brooklyn, NY.

The incredible Wright – Bujaj fight will be replayed this Saturday night on Comcast Sportsnet Chicago at 11 PM

Wright of Evanston, Illinois (just outside of Chicago) will be looking for an impressive performance against Hayes, who has faced the very top competition which includes world champions and top contenders.

“Training has gone well and I am ready for Friday night,”said Wright.

“Even though Hayes has a lot of fights, I really do not know much on him. I do a lot of stuff instinctively and I prepare for anything he can bring.”

Boxing fans in New York are still talking about his epic war with Bujaj and despite the physicality of the bout, Wright did not take too much time away from the gym.

“I got back in the gym about a week and a half after the fight. I knew I had this fight coming up so I gave myself a good month and half camp for this.”

Wright did some reflecting back on his classic with Bujaj and he thinks the two could meet again down the line.

“I felt I could have used my jab more and probably used more head movement. It was a good fight. Even though most of the fans believed I won, a draw was just. I wouldn’t mind a rematch.”

Wright is a recent signee of Dmitry Salita’s Star of David Promotions and he believes that the former world title challenger is the right promoter to get him the big opportunities.

“Dmitry has good intentions for me and as long as I do well, I know he will get me the big fights. I know that the Cruiserweight division is based in Europe, so I want to make the Europeans like Mayweather has had success with the Hispanic fighters. This Friday, Detroit should be for a Hurricane.””, finished Wright.

Said Wright’s trainer Rick Wilson, “There were some things in the Bujaj fight that should have been called like 8 or 9 low blows and an instance where we feel Junior was on his way of stopping Bujaj and the ref stopped it to give an 8-count but there is no 8-count in New York.”

“We are focused on Hayes. He has fought world class guys and has gone the distance with them. He is crafty who knows how to survive.”

Like Wright, Wilson likes the direction that Salita and Star of David Promotions is going with him.

“I have a good feeling about Dmitry’s vision and passion. We want to become the American Cruiserweight World champion. In 2 or 3 fights down to road go to Europe and look for a big fight there. There is a lot of opportunity as not only the champions are based there but the two guys in England in Nathan Cleverly and Tony Bellew are also on our radar.”

Friday’s show at Royal Oak Theater is promoted by Kaltsas Productions.

This will be Jordan Shimmell’s fifth bout of 2014 and his 17th since turning pro on June 30, 2012. The bout is also less than 6 full weeks since Jordan’s last fight on August 1, 2014. That fight was on the undercard of ESPN’s Friday Night Fights show at the Little Creek Casino in Shelton, WA. Jordan’s opponent was former world title challenger Epifanio Mendoza who was 37-17-1 with 33 KOs heading into the fight with Jordan. Mendoza felt the sting of Jordan’s jab early in the bout and soon was being hit with hard right hands and strong body punches. Mendoza was unable to land anything meaningful against Jordan Shimmell and quickly started resorting to dirty tactics. Mendoza was cautioned numerous times for several different fouls including low blows, rabbit punches, and hitting on the break. Mendoza had a point deducted in the third round for hitting on the break after ignoring several prior warnings from the referee. In the fourth round a visibly tiring Mendoza continued to ignore the referee and had a second point deduction. Later in the round, it became apparent that Mendoza wanted to get disqualified rather than get knocked out. Jordan Shimmell was landing hard punches anytime Mendoza didn’t clinch and in the clinches Mendoza continued to deliberately foul the technically superior Shimmell. At 2:31 of the fourth round, Mendoza hit Jordan Shimmell as the referee was separating the two boxers and the referee disqualified Mendoza.

Jordan Shimmell is the USBO Cruiserweight Champion and is world ranked by the IBO and the WBC. He is ranked in the regional rankings by the NABA, NABF, NABO and USBA organizations. Jordan is one of the top cruiserweight prospects in the world.

Hernandez, Arslan promise to perform to the max this Saturday

yoan_pablo_hernandez
Here are the main quotes from today’s final press conference ahead of the fight between IBF Cruiserweight World Champion Yoan Pablo Hernandez (28-1, 14 KOs) and Firat Arslan (34-7-2, 21 KOs) this Saturday at the Erfurt Exhibition Hall in Thuringia, Germany.

Yoan Pablo Hernandez: I have trained careful with my focus being completely on the task ahead this Saturday night. I did not have this kind of focus for my last fights, as I had to battle many problems outside of the ring. I almost give up but my wife and my coach motivated me not to let myself go. Now, I am stronger than ever. August 16 will be my proving point.

Firat Arslan: I want to become the oldest cruiserweight champion of all time. I know that this is my last chance to glory and I did everything in preparation to make my dream come true. Coach Fritz Sdunek is going to be my key factor against Hernandez. When I fought Huck for the second time, I made many mistakes, which are not going to happen again. You will see my best performance – ever – on Saturday.

Veteran Chris Martin Aiming for a Win in his Hometown of San Diego

ORANGE, Calif. (Aug. 12, 2014) – Thompson Boxing Promotions promotes its first show in San Diego with an action-packed “Path to Glory SD Style” line up highlighted by two of the city’s most popular boxers: undefeated junior welterweight prospect Giovani Santillan (13-0, 7 KOs) and the veteran super bantamweight Christopher Martin (27-3-3, 9 KOs). The seven-bout card takes place on
Saturday, Aug. 16, from the Harley Davidson San Diego, the largest Harley Davidson dealership in the U.S.

Tickets priced at $100, $60, & $40 are on sale now and can be purchased online at ThompsonBoxing.com or by phone at 714-935-0900.

Santillan, starring in his first main event and fifth straight 8-round fight, will battle Osenohan Vazquez (7-1-1, 2 KOs) of Jersey City, NJ for the vacant Junior Welterweight NABF Jr. Title.

Martin, who was scheduled to face Efrain Esquivias in July before Esquivias pulled out due to a fight week illness, is fighting the well experienced and hard-punching Giovanni Caro (24-14-4, 19 KOs) of Mexico City in the 8-round co-main event.

Thompson Boxing Promotions checked in on Martin’s training camp to get his thoughts on fighting in his hometown, his opponent, and the San Diego boxing scene. Additionally, we put together a quick video recap from one of his recent training sessions available here.

On how this training camp was a bit more challenging than the rest…

“I was scheduled to fight in July, but the fight fell through at the last minute,” Martin said. “I was told by my promoter to stay active because they had August dates to fill. I ended up taking four days off to decompress and give my body a little bit of a break. I eased back into my training routine because the last thing I wanted to do was over train and come out flat. I think we managed the workload quite well and I know I’ll be in great condition for this fight.”

On your opponent, Giovanni Caro…

“I think our styles complement one another. Caro likes to press forward and attack, while I prefer to counterpunch and take advantage of defensive weaknesses. It’s definitely going to be a back and forth battle. He’s coming off some tough losses, but he also fought Fernando Montiel tough for twelve rounds. If a couple of rounds go his way, he wins that fight.”

On the importance of not dropping two fights in a row…

“I put my last fight behind me. That fight put into perspective what is required of me in order to move forward. I can’t dwell on the past, I can only think about the present and look forward to the future. All I have on my mind is getting a win.”

On fighting in your hometown for the first time in four years…

“I don’t get this opportunity very often so it’s really exciting. I can’t really worry about the crowd. I just have to do my best out there. I have a lot of local fans that are coming out to support me, which is great.”

On the burgeoning San Diego boxing scene…

“We’re a tight knit community. Most of us train at the same gyms and we all get along pretty well. Myself, Giovani Santillan who is the main event, Adrian Vargas and Ulises Sierra who are on the undercard, we all bump into each from time to time. There’s a fair amount of trash talking that goes around, but it’s all in good spirits. San Diego isn’t like the Los Angeles area where there is a lot of displacement between gyms. There’s only a handful of places to train so you’re bound to develop friendships with some of these guys.”

Doors open at 6:15 p.m. and the first bell rings at 6:45 p.m. The Harley Davidson San Diego is located at 4645 Morena Blvd., San Diego, CA 92117 and can be reached at (858) 616-6999.

NEW HATTON SIGNING TARGETS CLASH WITH EXPERIENCED AUSSIE

RED HOT Belarussian prospect Kirill Relikh has signed a long-term promotional contract with Hatton Promotions and is now targeting a showdown with experienced Aussie Chad Bennett.

Relikh, 16 -0 (14 KOs), has been trained by four-time world champion Ricky Hatton since February this year and will return to the ring in his home city of Minsk on September 10.

Should he come through that fight, he’s been promised a mandatory shot at the aforementioned Bennett’s WBC EPBC light-welterweight championship.

Bennett, who has recently called out WBA champion Jessie Vargas, won the title on Friday night with a fifth round stoppage of the unheralded Indonesia Stevi Ongen Ferdinandus, and Relikh is willing to travel to Australia to be his first challenger.

Hatton Promotions is keen to make the fight happen and will be looking to complete negotiations with Bennett’s representatives within the WBC’s time limit of 90 days.

“I’ve already beaten one Australian in Ty Gilchrist quite easily and I can’t see Bennett being much tougher,” Relikh said through a translator.

“He’s got a good record with more than 40 fights, but he’s not really fought anyone and I’ve heard boxing fans in his own country don’t take him seriously.

“I expect to go to Australia, beat him and have the fans singing my name.”

Ricky Hatton has handled the careers of a myriad of top class fighters since launching his promotional company in 2009 and he believes Relikh can be as good as any.

“Kirill has that raw potential that really gets trainers excited,” Hatton said. “When he first came over he was a little bit upright, like they are from that part of the world, but I remember taking him on the pads and thinking ‘wow, what have they been feeding this guy?’

“You’ve only got to look at his record, 14 knockouts in 16 wins, to see that he can punch. We’ve added a few subtleties his game now and the sky’s the limit.”

He made his Fight Night debut on a special afternoon edition of NBC Fight Night on November 16, 2013 at Turning Stone Resort & Casino in Verona, NY against Vyacheslav “Czar” Glazkov. Wilson took the fight on less than 48 hours’ notice and agreed to fight at heavyweight despite being a cruiserweight. SHAWN PORTER, KELL BROOK AND UNDERCARD FIGHTERS TALK ABOUT THEIR TRAINING CAMP DAYS AWAY FROM THEIR BIG NIGHT

kell-brook
CARSON, Calif. (Aug. 11, 20141) – With less than a week away to fight night, Shawn Porter, Kell Brook and undercard fighters talk about their training camp experiences and expectations surrounding their big fights this Saturday, Aug. 16 at StubHub Center in Carson, Calif. live on SHOWTIME®.

In the main event, undefeated IBF Welterweight World Champion “Showtime” Shawn Porter will defend his title against fellow unbeaten British sensation Kell Brook in a 12-round bout. In the co-feature, Sakio “The Scorpion” Bika seeks to retain his WBC Super Middleweight Championship when he faces Anthony “The Dog” Dirrell in a highly anticipated 12-round rematch of their Dec. 2013 split draw. In the opening fight of the telecast, Omar “Panterita” Figueroa Jr. will put his WBC Lightweight World Title on the line when he faces mandatory challenger WBC Silver Lightweight Champion Daniel “Tremendo” Estrada in a 12-round bout.

Fight week has arrived, and as the Aug. 16 fighters wrap up camp, they answer a series of training camp related questions that offer some insight into their final preparations for this Saturday’s bouts.

Q: You’re essentially done with training camp at this point, how did everything go?

A: Shawn Porter (training in Las Vegas) – “Yep, it’s all over as of last week. We just finished, and my dad was very happy with how everything went. We did 15 rounds of sparring to close things out.”

Kell Brook (finalizing his training in Las Vegas)- “We got some great work done. We’re winding everything down, and I’m feeling fresh for fight night.”

Sakio Bika (training in St. Louis) – “Everything has gone smoothly. My team and I have been working very hard and they have been very supportive. The weather has been great, and I haven’t had any injuries. So everything has gone well.”

Anthony Dirrell (training in Detroit) – “It’s going well. It’s just hard work. We’ve been working to make it harder than last camp so that I can keep getting better.”

Omar Figueroa Jr. (training in Weslaco, Texas) – “Everything is going well. This is one of the best camps we’ve had. We’re excited for a great fight.”

Daniel Estrada (training in Mexico City, Mexico) – “I have been working very hard for the past five weeks. I’ve been running around 4:00 a.m. in the high altitude of Mexico along with my team that includes Juan Manuel Marquez, Ignacio ‘Nacho’ Beristain and Raul de Anda, and to know I am receiving the advice of one of the greats in the sport [Marquez] gives me the peace of mind that I am doing the right thing for this upcoming fight.”

Deontay Wilder (training in Tuscaloosa, Ala.) – “Everything has been going as planned. This has probably been one of the shortest training camps I’ve had. That thrills me though. A lot of fighters claim to be athletes, but on the night of the fight I’ll show exactly how athletic and ready I am. I’ve been missing the ring and I’m ready to get back.”

Jorge Linares (training in Las Vegas) – “I’m very happy not only because I have a fight coming up, but also because I’m at home once again. I’ve been training with Ismael Salas for two years now and I feel like I’m at home here, so everything is going great.”

Q: We’re less than a week from fight night. How are you feeling physically?

A: Shawn Porter – “I’m in the best shape of my life, but I always try to stay prepared.”

Kell Brook – “Mentally strong, and physically ready.”

Sakio Bika – “I’m feeling very good, I’m ready to defend my belt. Everything has been great in St. Louis.”

Anthony Dirrell – “Great, if I’m not ready by now then I’m not ready. I feel ready to go.”

Omar Figueroa Jr. – “I honestly feel like I’m in the best shape I’ve ever been in. I only took a week and a half off after my last fight. So I’ve been super active ever since I started training for my last fight.”

Deontay Wilder – “I’m good to go. I’m always in shape. I’m always in the gym. I treat boxing like my nine to five. Others may not take it seriously, but this is a sport where you can get hurt if you don’t protect yourself and take it seriously. So I’m always tuned up and ready to go for my fans.”

Jorge Linares – “[Fight night] It’s basically here, so I’m excited and feeling well. I’ll be on weight and ready to fight.”

Q: Has your game plan stayed consistent, or has it evolved since you started camp?

A: Shawn Porter – “It stayed consistent. We always train hard.”

Kell Brook – “It’s always been the same. We’ve been training 100 percent the whole way through.”

Sakio Bika – “Kevin (Cunningham) and I always do the same thing. He keeps me positive, focused and working very hard to get ready for Aug.16.”

Anthony Dirrell – “We’re working on some of the same strategies and some different ones, but they’re old things that I know will work on Aug. 16.”

Omar Figueroa Jr. – “We’ve changed a few things just because we want to try to encompass everything. We work on boxing, brawling, speed and movement. Hopefully it all comes together for me at the same time.”

Deontay Wilder – “This is boxing, and this is the heavyweight division. So you can’t take anyone lightly. I’m not treating this like a warm-up. My main focus is fighting for a title, but I’m not looking past my opponent on Aug. 16.”

Q: What have you been doing to pass the time when you are not in the gym?

A: Shawn Porter – “I’m normally at home relaxing, and I love going to the movies too. You can usually find me at one of the two.”

Kell Brook – “I rest and sometimes I like to have a walk down the strip. It’s nothing too strenuous though.”

Sakio Bika – “We go to the movies, or I’ll go to the mall and try to walk around and keep busy. This is not the craziest city, so there aren’t a lot of distractions. That makes this a great place to train.”

Anthony Dirrell – “I like to play games. We’ve got a gaming system, and we go to the movies. We don’t do anything too big though because the focus has to stay on the fight.”

Omar Figueroa Jr. – “I have my daughter with me almost every day. So I spend a lot of time with her. I also play video games.”

Deontay Wilder – “I love the water. So I swim a lot. I get massages. We go to the movies and I spend time with my kids. I’m traveling a little bit too. It’s tough to fit everything in, but I’m love being a father and I love being around my kids. However, even when I’m away from the gym my mind is focused on boxing. I’m always working on things and trying to figure out how to get the world title. I’m so ready to go for the title fight that I shouldn’t even need a training camp. I’ll have one, but I feel like I’m prepared right now.”

Q: In terms of diet, are you doing anything specific during this camp?

A: Shawn Porter – “Nope, we know what works and we know what got us here. We stick to that.”

Kell Brook – “Not really, I’ve just been sticking to it and staying in great health.”

Sakio Bika – “No, I’m not doing anything special really. I eat what I want to eat, but I eat clean. I never have to cut much weight.”

Anthony Dirrell – “No, I’m eating the same things as always. I don’t have a problem with weight. I’m careful with what I eat, but I can eat what I want.”

Omar Figueroa Jr. – “Yes, this camp has been totally different. It has to do with me maturing as an athlete. I’m closely following my diet plan. I’m eating every three hours, and I’m avoiding sodium and carbs. I’m surprising myself this time around. I got myself in line because this is for the good of my career.”

Deontay Wilder – “No, not really. As a heavyweight I can basically eat anything. But I have a high metabolism as well so that helped. I just try to make sure to eat the right things.”

Jorge Linares – “I’m right on weight. I feel good and even though this fight is not at my regular weight of 135 pounds, I feel very good. Whoever can’t make weight with the extreme heat here in Las Vegas, has serious issues. Thankfully, I feel very good.”

Q: What is the one thing you can’t eat during training that you miss most?

A: Shawn Porter – “I stay away from most things actually. My diet is typically just clean, organic food with lots of vegetables.”

Kell Brook – “There’s no one thing really, I just try to eat healthy all around.”

Sakio Bika – “It’s not about food for me. The one thing I don’t have in training camp is my family and my friends. Here in training camp I don’t have anyone, and I miss the people that are closest to me. I miss having breakfast and dinner with my family. But I know this is business. I’m here to train. I know in a couple of weeks and I can see those important people again, and they understand what I’m doing here.”

Anthony Dirrell – “No sweets!”

Omar Figueroa Jr. – “I feel like I’m a pregnant lady with some of the cravings I’ve been having. Lately I’ve been wanting gummy bears, and pork rinds – stuff that I don’t even eat normally.”

Deontay Wilder – “I’m staying away from the fried foods.”

Q: What is your biggest motivation while training?

A: Shawn Porter – “It’s all about the prize. I know what’s to come and where I’m headed. The outcome is what motivates me to put on a great performance for the fans on fight night.”

Kell Brook – “I like to prove people wrong and challenging myself. My family helps a lot too.”

Sakio Bika – “It’s about family first because I have to come here and work hard to provide for them. I love what I’m doing, and I love boxing. At the end of the day it’s about coming here so that I can put food on the table. That’s why I wake up early in the morning.”

Anthony Dirrell – “My two-year-old son motivates me to make a better life for him and my family.”

Omar Figueroa Jr. – “My family is most important, and the kind of lifestyle that I’m able to offer my whole family means a lot to me. I want to look out for my parents and my brothers too. I want to be able to give them the lifestyle that they’ve always wanted. I’m prioritizing things like my daughter’s college fund too.”

Daniel Estrada – “I have been waiting for this opportunity for almost a year. I’ve been the mandatory challenger for a while, but for some reason I couldn’t get the fight for the title. Now the opportunity is here and I am very positive I will become a World Champion on August 16.”

Deontay Wilder – “My motivations is fighting for a world title. I need to go into the ring and take care of my opponent on Aug. 16. I have to fight to win and succeed in order to provide for my family.”

Q: What is your typical training day like during this camp?

A: Shawn Porter – “My day starts with a 7 a.m. training session on the track that takes about an hour. Then I rest before heading to the gym to box from around 1- 4 p.m. Then I relax for a bit before heading for a massage and maybe an ice bath. I also like to work in some basketball on certain days.”

Kell Brook – “It all depends really. I start with a run in the morning. Then we do strength and condition. I spar in the afternoon, and then we do some technique work.”

Sakio Bika – “It’s six days a week. I wake up at 6 a.m. and run. Then I eat breakfast. After that I go to gym, and at noon I work with Kevin and spar. We finish up around 4p.m. and then I rest. Later I eat dinner and go to bed early.”

Anthony Dirrell – “I wake up at 6:30 a.m. We train hard in the morning, and then I rest for a bit. Then we go to gym to box and spar. Later in the evening we do strength and conditioning training before bed.”

Omar Figueroa Jr. – “Right now I’m back to two times a day, but at the beginning of camp, I trained three times a day. I wake up and go to the gym around 11 a.m. I have insomnia so I go to the gym a little later. I start with strength and conditioning. Then we do boxing around 2 p.m. or 3 p.m. We finish up with a night run around 11 p.m.”

Deontay Wilder – “We hit the bags for a couple of rounds and listen to some old school funk why we get warmed up. Then, I hit the heavy bags for a couple of rounds and we do uppercut work. Every day is different though. Sometimes we switch things up and will keep things as exciting as possible. The same thing every day gets boring, so we like to change it up and keep it fun.”

While each fighter has similar tendencies training, each pugilist has their own story. Please see additional questions below.

SHAWN PORTER

Q:Has Vegas become your favorite place to train?

A: “I love to mix it up and go to different cities sometimes to train, but top to bottom I’d say Vegas is the best.”

Q: What makes Vegas so appealing as a backdrop for training?

A: “This being home now makes everything that much easier. Nothing’s complicated and I’m able to keep it easy.”

Q: You’re obviously coming off of a smashing KO win against Paulie Malignaggi this past April. Can you describe how the aftermath of that fight impacted your approach to this camp?

A: “More than anything, it made me realize that I need to put on another spectacular performance this time around so that I can get what’s coming.”

Q: Kell Brook is going to be the first Brit you’ve faced professionally. Do you expect anything different from him stylistically, and are you preparing differently for him?

A: “No, nothing specific. There’s nothing too complicated or unorthodox about his style. So I didn’t need to bring in any kind of specialist to spar, or plan for anything too different.”

KELL BROOK

Q: You’ve talked about your familiarity with fighting in the U.S. once previously in Atlantic City, and you mentioned how fighting outside of England might actually lessen your stress level heading into the biggest fight of your career. Would you elaborate a bit on that and why you’ll be so comfortable fighting for a title in Carson, Calif.?

A: “I’m confident because I’ve been here before and I’m very well prepared. I have my family with me too. When I box at home in front of eight or nine thousand people who know me there’s a little more pressure. When I come over here it can be easier to focus on the fight.”

Q: You made the trip to the U.S. for this fight on July 30. How was the travel, and do you think that finishing up the last two weeks of your training in the U.S. prepared you as well as your training regimen back home?

A: “Yep, I travel well, and I’m in good company. They keep me smiling.
“I’m ready now though. We’ve just been putting in work and now it’s all about enjoying this and being ready.”

Q: This will be your third professional bout against an American fighter, but both of your previous two were against Carson Jones. From your experience in those two fights, and from watching video of other U.S. fighters, do you notice anything different stylistically about U.S. fighters, and does that change your preparation in training camp at all?

A: “I believe I can adapt to any style. I’ve been sparring with some American fighters. They do have some unique things about their style. But the best fighters know how to adapt, and that’s what I’ll do.”

SAKIO BIKA

Q: Are you preparing differently for Dirrell this time around?

A: “I’m not going to change too much. I’m coming out to fight. I don’t want to run around and chase him. I’m going to show Anthony that I’m ready to do exactly what I’ve always done: to make people happy to see me fight. If he wants to take my belt off of me he better come prepared.”

Q: Is there one specific element of Dirrell’s repertoire that you’re working especially hard in camp to combat better when you meet this Saturday?

A: “The main thing I have to do is keep working hard every day and getting my rest when I can. I’ll be ready for Anthony. I always come to fight. I’m sure that I’m doing everything the way that I’m supposed to. And I’m training hard with my team so that I can defend and retain my belt.”

Q: How, if at all, do you think fighting him at StubHub Center in Carson, Calif. will differ from the fight you had at Barclays Center?

A: “Not at all because I’ve fought before in an open arena, and I’ve fought in California before too. Anywhere they put a ring, in a shopping mall, a movie theater, I can fight anywhere.”

ANTHONY DIRRELL

Q: Are you preparing differently for Bika this time around?

A: “It’s basically the same, just tweaking a few things here and there really.”

Q: Is there one specific element of Bika’s repertoire that you’re working especially hard in camp to combat better when you meet on Aug. 16?

A: “Not really, he’s going to be the same fighter. I’ll stick to my game plan and fight my fight, and he’ll do the same.”

Q: How, if at all, do you think fighting him at StubHub Center in Carson, Calif. will differ from the fight you had at Barclays Center?

A: “It makes no real difference. A ring is a ring. It’s going to be one on one no matter what.”

OMAR FIGUEROA JR.

Q: You decided to make some changes to your training regimen coming into this camp. You’re now training with your father instead of Joel Diaz, and you’ve moved your training back home to Weslaco, Texas. Can you talk about why you decided to change things up?

A: “It’s just because of my daughter. I see her every day now. It was very hard for me to leave and not be able to see her. That’s a big part of why I had to get my act in line.”

Q: After you had your April fight at StubHub Center, did you learn anything from that experience that may have altered your training now that you’ll be returning there?

A: “Definitely, the April fight wasn’t a hard fight. It wasn’t as physical as I’m used to fighting. The biggest thing was keeping my weight where it needs to be heading into this fight.”

DANIEL ESTRADA

Q: Are you excited for your first opportunity to fight professionally in the U.S.?

A: “I am planning to take advantage of all the things I did in the gym. All the sacrifices will be paid back with a positive outcome on Saturday. I know I did the right things in training, and we have the right strategy at the gym, so there will be no excuses whatsoever.”

DEONTAY WILDER

Q: Your dominance in the ring has been well documented. With none of your professional opponents making it past the fourth round, do you ever feel like it’s a struggle for you to stay disciplined and train?

A: “Discipline is a mental thing, and I’m mentally strong. All of the hard work is in the gym and with the sparring. When it’s time to actually fight that’s the easy part, and it’s more fun actually. But it’s not hard for me to stay disciplined at all. I’ve changed lots of things regarding my style. I’m more patient now. I’m definitely a thinker now and that maturity helps me. People will find out that I’m a different kind of guy. They’ll see when I become the heavyweight champ just how disciplined I am.”

Q: How do you handle training for an opponent yet to be named, and how does that uncertainty impact your training?

A: “Camp has been the same as always. We’re not looking past August 16, but we know to prepare for Stiverne. That’s how confident I am in my ability and skills. I’m not worried about people picking the ‘right guy’ for me. I would be the laughing stock of the world if I had the title fight lined up and lost this fight on August 16. So I just have to get the job done next week and we’ll go from there.”

JORGE LINARES

Q: Do you believe that you have a distinct advantage going into your fight thist week?

A: “I always think positively, you have to jump in the ring thinking like a winner. I trust my training, my trainer and my corner. We don’t have any negativity at all. We feel good and prepared.”

Q: Are you feeling the pressure of needing to secure a win h in order to get a shot at a world title?

A: “It’s obligatory; I have to win on Saturday, without a doubt. There’s no thinking about losing, I have to get a good win this week and then we’ll look for that world title. Winning that world title is the only thing present on my mind.”

Successful promoter Maloney been living as a woman

Successful British promoter Frank Maloney has been living as a woman and is eyeing a sex change according to the Mirror in the United Kingdom.

Maloney, 61, told England’s Sunday Mirror in an exclusive interview, “I was born in the wrong body and I have always known I was a woman. I can’t keep living in the shadows. That is why I am doing what I am today. Living with the burden any longer would have killed me.

“What was wrong at birth is now being medically corrected. I have a female brain. I knew I was different from the minute I could compare myself to other children. I wasn’t in the right body. I was jealous of girls.”

Also revealed in the interview — which included a video interview and numerous pictures of Maloney dressed as a woman — is that Maloney is more than a year into the transition period, having secretly undergone hormone therapy, hundreds of hours of hair removal electrolysis, voice coaching and counseling.

“The feeling of wanting to be like and dress like a woman has always been there,” said Maloney, who has been married twice and has three children. “I consciously made the decision that I wouldn’t dress like a woman but it was a constant urge. But I have never been able to tell anyone in boxing. Can you imagine me walking into a boxing hall dressed as a woman and putting an event on? I can imagine what they would scream at me. But if I had been in the theatre or arts world, nobody would blink an eye about this transition.”

Maloney managed Lennox Lewis to Heavyweight championship.

Lewis, who hasn’t been close to Maloney for many years, showed support for him Sunday in a statement.

“I was just as shocked as anyone at the news about my former promoter and my initial thought was that it was a windup,” Lewis said. “The great thing about life, and boxing, is that, day to day, you never know what to expect. This world we live in isn’t always cut and dried or black and white, and coming from the boxing fraternity, I can only imagine what a difficult decision this must be for Kellie.

“However, having taken some time to read Kellie’s statements, I understand better what she and others in similar situations are going through. I think that all people should be allowed to live their lives in a way that brings them harmony and inner peace. I respect Kellie’s decision and say that if this is what brings about true happiness in her life, then so be it. #LiveAndLetLive.”

Paul Graham looks forward to a Sunday Afternoon First

With the start of the professional boxing season starting in September, Prospect Boxing are pleased to confirm their first show of the upcoming season, which will take place on Sunday 21st September at the Cleland Miners Club, in Lanarkshire.

Looking forward to what will be his fourth season as a promoter, Prospect owner Paul Graham gives a run down off the card “We have local boy Kenny Davidson returning to action after being out for a while, and he is taking on Scott Edgar. Scott has been with me a year and he has had two wins and his confidence is getting better with every fight. I picked this as my headline fight as we have a good matched fight that will deliver. Edgar will want to continue the winning streak he has worked hard for, while Davidson will not want to lose face in front of a home crowd.

“After the success of both Charlie Flynn and Josh Taylor in the Commonwealth Games, Scottish Boxing is on a bit of a high, and I know this event will give some people a chance to come along and get involved. I have spoken to a few people who are keen to come along and experience their first boxing event.

He adds “We also have JP McGuinness returning to action as well.I thought he was unlucky not to get the draw in his last fight against Daniel Cope in Sunderland, in which he took at 24 hours notice.

“Lee Gallacher will also be returning, he’s had two fights so far,in the paid ranks and has impressed me with his style. This is the first time both fighters have fought in the Cleland Club, so the atmosphere and venue will be good experience for them both. I have Rhys Pagan scheduled for September 21st, and after the win over Jenkinson I think he will looking for another strong performance.

The card is completed with the debut of Edinburgh based Lee Redpath, who competes over 4 rounds. “Lee has had a good amateur career, and is looking to come to the pro game. He trains out of the same gym as Craig McEwan and has shown he is dedicated so far, so I am looking forward to seeing him in action and see what he can do.

Prospect Boxing Present ‘A Punch. A Pie. A Pint’ at the Cleland Miners Club on the afternoon of Sunday 21st September 2014. Tickets are priced at £30 and includes a free pint and food.

Gary Shaw Believes Nugaev vs. Shafikov Will Be A Fight Of The Year Candidate

Gary Shaw
SANTA YNEZ, CA (August 11, 2014) – Promoter Gary Shaw believes the scheduled main-event on ESPN “Friday Night Fights” this week, featuring lightweights Rustam Nugaev vs. Denis Shafikov, is going to be a potential fight of the year candidate.

Nugaev (27-6-1, 17 KOs), who’s rated IBF #5, WBC #3 and WBA #7, is currently riding a 5-fight knockout streak since arriving from Russian in 2013. Shafikov (33-1-1, 18 KOs), is coming off a 12-round unanimous loss to current IBF champion, Miguel Vasquez (33-3, 13 KOs). Both fighters have an aggressive style which Gary Shaw believes will make for an exciting night of boxing. The winner will position himself as the mandatory challenger to fight for the IBF title.

“This is going to be one hell of a fight for the fans,” said Gary Shaw. “Nugaev is a tremendous puncher with a great chin and he loves to bring the fight to his opponent. Shafikov is similar as he also likes to come forward and throw big shots. Both fighters have a lot to gain with a victory. With the winner becoming the mandatory to fight for the IBF title, I see nothing but fireworks in this fight, and I feel Nugaev will come out on top.”

“I have to commend ESPN for showcasing a real fight, a fight that the fans are guaranteed to enjoy. There have been a lot of mismatches in boxing of late and fight fans deserve to see more hard-hitting competitive fights, especially in a main event attraction. In Nugaev vs. Shafikov, you have two fighters who are putting everything on the line to get a world title opportunity. This Friday a “WAR” will be shown on ESPN “Friday Night Fights” so everyone should be tuning in. This fight has the potential to be Fight of the Year.”

The ESPN “Friday Night Fights” telecast begins Friday August 15, 2014 at 9:00 p.m. EST / 6:00 p.m. PST from the Chumash Resort Casino in Santa Ynez, Calif.

Tickets priced $35, $50, $65, $85, and $95 are on sale now and can be purchased at the Chumash Casino Box office or online at HERE. Doors open at 5:00 P.M, first fight starts at 5:30 P.M.

M-1 Challenge 50: Puetz hopes to duplicate Germany’s World Cup Soccer success Friday vs. Miranda

ST. PETERSBURG, Russia (August XX, 2014) – German mixed-martial arts rising star, Stephan Puetz (10-1-0, 4 KO/TKO, 3 SUB), hopes to duplicate his country’s success against Brazil in the recent FIFA World Cup on August 15, when he defends his M-1 Challenge light heavyweight title for the first time against Brazilian challenger Luis Fernando “Hulk” Miranda (12-1-0, 4 KO/TKO, 7 SUB) in M-1 Challenge 50’s co-feature event.

M-1 Challenge light heavyweight champion Stephan Puetz

M-1 Challenge 50: Battle on Neva will be streamed live in high definition on www.M1Global.TV, outdoors from the St.

Stephan Puetz (R) and Viktor Nemkov

Puetz was originally scheduled to make his first title defense in a rematch against the previous champion he defeated last March in their M-1 Challenge 46 championship fight, Viktor Nemkov, who suffered torn ligaments in his hand during training camp that, unfortunately, forced him to pull out of celebrated M-1 Challenge 50 anniversary show and be sidelined for several months.

Nemkov’s replacement is equally worthy challenger Miranda, a black belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, in addition to being the Monster Black Combat and King of Combat champion back home in Brazil.

Germany shocked Brazil, 7-1, in the semifinals of the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil, en route to becoming the world soccer/football champion with a 1-0 triumph over Argentina in the championship final match.

Stephan Puetz

“Football and martial arts are totally different sports,” Puetz noted, “but I would love to score some goals against Miranda, too. I will try to beat Miranda with all of my skills and power in order to stay M-1 champion. This has nothing to do with nationalities, though. The World Cup semifinals was a bad crushing and something unheard of before. Let’s put it like this: I will try to be as dominant as the German National Team has been.”

M-1 Challenge heavyweight champion Damian “Polish Pitbull” Grabowski (19-1-0, 6 KO/TKO, 6 SUB) takes on fellow Pole, undefeated No. 1 contender Marcin “Tybur” Tybura (10-0-0, 4 KO/TKO, 4 SUB), in the newly elevated main event.

Also scheduled to fight on main card are Slovenian featherweight Ivan “Buki” Buchinger (26-4-0, 6 KO/TKO, 16 SUB) vs. Russian veteran Mikhail Malyutin (26-12-0, 5 KO/TKO, 8 SUB), Spanish welterweight Daniel “The Gladiator” Tabera (17-5-3, 4 KO/TKO, 6 SUB) vs. unbeaten Russian prospect Ilya Doderkin (5-0-0, 5 SUB), Germany’s Saba Bolaghi (1-0-0, 1 SUB) vs. Russian lightweight Zulfikar Usmanov 6-3-0, 1 KO/TKO, 4 SUB), Polish featherweight Kamil Maron (5-1-0, 0 KO/SUB, 2 SUB) vs. Russia’s Nikita Chistyakov (1-1-0, 1 SUB), and pro-debuting middleweights Khabib Isaev, of Russia, and Dauren Ermekov, of Kazakhstan.

On the preliminary card in the RosStroilnvest Cup lightweight semifinal matches are Russian prospects Radzhi Aliev (2-2-0, 1 KO/TKO, 0 SUB) vs. Anton Telepnev (6-4-0, 1 KO/TKO), and Artem Glybchak vs. Marat Balaev making their respective professional debuts.

All fights and fighters are subject to change.

Jolene Blackshear and Kenia Enriquez Headline “San Diego: Dangerous Divas” in Seperate Fights On Thursday,September 4th!

(San Diego) – In less than a year, California boxing hall of fame promoter Bobby DePhilippis and his company, Bobby D. Presents, have become in one of the most prominent female fight promoters in the country. So much so that in their recent annual convention held in Chicago, the NABF (North American Boxing Federation) named Mr. DePhilippis the female fight promoter of the year. In just six months, Mr. DePhilippis has presented three title fights including the junior flyweight title won by Kenia Enriquez, the straw weight captured by Amaris Quintana and last month the flyweight belt won by Chantal Cordova. In the next edition of “San Diego Fights” scheduled for Thursday, September 4th, at the only home for local boxing in San Diego, the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Mission Valley, Bobby D. Presents features “Dangerous Divas” when former two-time world champion Jolene “Classy Assassin” Blackshear (8-5, 3KO) of San Diego comes back in the six round main event.

Blackshear captured the IFBA light flyweight title in just her third fight back in 1997 and after losing it in her third defense, took a nine year break from the sport. She came back with a vengeance as she defeated current WBO flyweight champ Melissa McMorrow in her first fight back and since then has not looked back earning wins over Lili Barajas, Linda Soto and Riverside’s Sindy Amador, the current IFBA 108lb champ. In her second fight of the year, Blackshear will face the tough Susan Reno (1-2-1) of New York in the light flyweight division over six rounds. Reno is no stranger to “America’s Finest City” since last April she faced the “Diamond Girl” Amaris Quintana in one of the best local female fights of the year last April.

NABF Light Flyweight champion Kenia Enriquez in Co-Main Event

In the co-main event, the fast rising world-ranked Tijuana fighter Kenia Enriquez (11-0, 6KO) will face former world straw weight champion Mayela “La Cobrita” Perez (11-15-4, 7KO) in a true test of her talent over eight rounds. The WBC#6/IBF#5/WBA#6 light flyweight in the world Enriquez just captured the NABF title over a 7th round TKO of Blackshear but in Perez she will face her most experienced foe to date. With thirty fights to her credit, she triples Kenia’s experience as a pro while facing the best in her division such as Naoko Fujioka, Sindy Amador, Ibeth Zamora, Jessica Chavez, Carina Moreno and the aforementioned Melissa McMorrow.

COMPLETE CARD ANNOUNCED FOR UPCOMING BROADWAY BOXING

dbe_logo
New York, NY(8/11/14) – This Wednesday, DiBella Entertainment will return to NYC’s famed B.B. King Blues Club & Grill for the latest edition of its Broadway Boxing series.

Headlining the eight-bout card will be former WBC featherweight world champion Elio Rojas (23-2, 14KO’s). Ending nearly two-and-a-half years of ring inactivity, Rojas will square off against Robert Osiobe (14-9-4, 6KO’s) in an eight-round junior lightweight matchup.

In the co-feature bout of the evening, DBE’s middleweight contender Lamar Russ (14-1, 7KO’s) will face the always-dangerous Derrick Findley (20-13-1, 13KO’s) in an eight-round middleweight showdown. In December of last year, Russ stepped way up in competition, taking on the three-time middleweight world title challenger Matthew Macklin in a bout that aired live on HBO. Russ, who took the fight on short notice, got off to a good start, but ultimately dropped a competitive 10-round unanimous decision. Russ returned in March of this year, but his bout against Tony Hirsch was stopped in the very first round after an accidental clash of heads caused a cut over Hirsch’s eye. Russ is raring to get back to his winning ways and impress fight fans and pundits alike when he vies against the heavy-handed Findley.

Competing in an eight-round super bantamweight contest will be Brooklyn’s world-rated contender Rafael Vazquez (11-1, 9KO’s), as hemixes it up withDerrick Wilson (10-6-2, 3KO’s). The heavy-handed WBA #7-rated super bantamweight contender Vazquez got a late start to his professional career, but he burst onto the scene last year with an upset ninth-round KO victory over Leon Moore (30-2) to win the vacant WBA Fedelatin super bantamweight crown and propel himself into the WBA’s top ten ratings. Vazquez is resolvedto fight his way into title contention, but he must first get by the dangerous Wilson, who holds four victories over previously undefeated opponents.

Returning to the ring for the sixth time in just his ninth month as a pro, Brooklyn’s 18-year-old phenom Junior Younan (5-0, 4KO’s) will be looking to make it a perfect 6-0 when he battles Marlon Farr in their four-round super middleweight matchup. Younan was a star as an amateur, and, since turning pro last November, has thus far lived up to the hype. All four of Younan’s knockouts have come before the two-minute mark in the very first round. In Younan’s latest outing, he showed flawless boxing and defensive ability to go along with his lightning quick hands and devastating one-punch knockout power. Younan is one of the brightest young stars in all of boxing and truly one to watch.

After turning pro in December 2012, Westchester County’s Bryant “Peewee” Cruz (11-0, 6KO’s) has quickly developed into one of the most popular figures in the NY boxing scene, and his legion of adoring fans continues to grow with each outing. The popular prospect, who signed an exclusive co-promotional contract with DBE and New Legend Boxing earlier this year, will challenge Jose Morales (7-5, 2KO’s) in their six-round junior lightweight matchup.

Making his much-anticipated pro debut will be DBE’s newly signed and highly regarded 2012 Olympian Jonathan Alonso. Born in the Dominican Republic, Alonso moved to Spain when he was seven years old and took up boxing just nine years later. After representing Spain at the 2012 Olympics, Alonso was one of the most sought after amateur boxers ever to come out of the country. With tremendous speed and power, a very bright future is expected for the talented 23-year-old prospect. He is scheduled to make his debut against Jose Gomez in a four-round junior welterweight matchup.

Fellow DBE-promoted New York Golden Gloves champions Travis Peterkin (11-0, 5KO’s) and Louis Cruz (8-0, 4KO’s) are also set to see action in separate six-round bouts, with Peterkin facing off against Lamont Williams in a light heavyweight matchup and Cruz fighting the upset-minded Cameron Kreal in a junior welterweight contest.

Brooklyn’s Peterkin has already picked up one win thus far in 2014. He was scheduled to fight back in May, but was forced to withdraw from the bout after coming down with the flu shortly before fight night. Peterkin will be focused on getting his career back on track when he boxes the California-native Williams.

Following a second-place finish at the 2011 National Golden Gloves, the 23-year-old Cruz competed in the 2012 US Olympic Trials before turning pro later that same year. He won all four of his fights in 2013 and has already picked up three victories this year. The Bronx-native will be determined to stay on course when he swaps leather with the tough Kreal. However, Kreal, who is coming off back-to-back victories over previously undefeated opponents, would love to make it three in a row next Wednesday night.

The event on August 13 is sponsored by Manfredi Auto Group and Everlast. Tickets are currently on sale and are priced at $125, $100, $75 and $55. Tables are also available for purchase for this event, with VIP tables going for $1,000 per table (5 seats at $200 per seat), Ringside tables for $500 (5 seats at $100), and $375 tables (5 seats at $75). Tickets are available for purchase by calling the DiBella Entertainment office at (212) 947-2577. Doors open at 6:30pm with the first bout scheduled for 7:00pm.

Luis Palomino Shines at WSOF 12 With Ferocious KO Over Lewis Gonzalez

LAS VEGAS – (Aug. 9) – Peru’s top mixed-martial-artist may soon find himself fighting for a World Series of Fighting title, as Luis Palomino (23-9) scored a devastating first-round knockout win of a previously undefeated Lewis Gonzalez (9-1).

Palomino was looking to trade bombs from the start, and he defended his opponent’s takedowns while using foot sweeps to keep him off-balance and delivering crisp punches in combinations. Gonzalez did briefly work the fight to the floor, but Palomino worked immediately back to his feet and resumed the assault.

The attacks opened a cut on Gonzalez’s head, and as blood streamed down his face, Palomino again swept his legs before throwing a high kick that saw the knee land flush. Gonzalez crumpled to the canvas, and Palomino landed two more punches before referee Herb Dean could call of the fight with 18 seconds left in the first round.

“I’m a natural-born striker,” Palomino said. “I love knocking people out. I feel like that’s something I had over him. And the experience factor.”

Palomino added: “The kid has a bright future. His strength is his wrestling and he really believes in the wrestling; that’s how he’s won most of his fights. So whether he’s feeling good or if he’s feeling under pressure, he’s always looking for the takedown. So I just had to wait, time it right and clip him.”

In the night’s co-feature, Brazilian wrestling standout Ronny Markes (15-3) grinded out a win over Cully Butterfield (13-4), scoring a unanimous-decision victory in a grappling heavy affair.

Markes came close to finishing the fight on a few occasions, nearly securing a rear-naked choke in the first round and ending the second round by punching away from back mount, but Butterfield simply refused to go away. Still, Markes was always in control of the moderately paced affair, and the action seemed more one-sided than the three 29-28 scored indicated.

In 195-pound catchweight action, Elvis Mutapcic (14-3) proved to be just a little too much for an impressive Kelvin Tiller (6-1), outwrestling his opponent en route to a unanimous-decision win.

The two had brief clashes of strikes on the feet, but Mutapcic found his most dominant opportunity against a creative opponent was to put him on his back. Mutapcic did exactly that, and Tiller simply couldn’t get back to his feet. At the final bell, it was clear Mutpacic had done enough to win, and was awarded the victory with scores of 30-27, 29-28 and 29-28.

Afterward, Mutapcic admitted he was happy with the win but was disappointed with the process.

“I’m usually a finisher, but I’m trying to expand my game, so it was good to get some experience on the ground tonight,” Mutapcic said. “I’ll have to watch the fight and see what I need to improve on. I think I should have moved more. I was a little flat-footed.”

In an important bantamweight matchup, Brandon Hempleman (10-2) shut down the vaunted wrestling of Olympic medalist Alexis Vila (14-5) and kickboxed his way to a unanimous-decision win.

Vila was a game competitor from start to finish, but Hempleman matched his speed on the feet and was often quicker on the trigger with his punches and kicks. Vila was aggressive until the end, but Hempleman was just a touch better and was awarded the decision win with scores of 29-28, 30-27 and 30-27.

“I thought I won the fight,” Hempleman said after the win. “I had the better shots. He’s a little bit shorter than me so I had to watch my reach, but he hit hard. He didn’t feel small.”

In the night’s first main-card contest, bantamweight prospect Matt Sayles (3-0) earned an impressive decision win over Bryson Hansen (7-2), battling back after nearly being finished in the opening round.

It was a Hansen left that sent his opponent crashing to the floor, but Sayles crawled back up, survived the following onslaught and then took over for the rest of the fight. Sayles showed incredible movement and angles as he picked apart his powerful opponent, rifling in right hands from all angles and racking up points. At the end of 15 minutes, Sayles was awarded the come-from-behind win, 29-28 on all three judges’ cards.

“I just survived it at the start,” Sayles said after the win. “I just survived. I knew I had to get back up and could win the fight.”

In the night’s final preliminary bout, Lucas Montoya (7-3) picked up a thrilling win over Jimmy Spicuzza (5-2), stopping his opponent with a rapid-fire barrage of strikes at the 4:11 mark of the first round.

Montoya’s jab was crisp from the beginning of the fight, and he busted up Spicuzza’s nose in the early going. A gritty Spicuzza battled back, throwing quick combinations as he looked to stage a comeback. Just when it looked like things were going his way, Montoya clipped him again and then fired non-stop punches until Spicuzza hit the floor and referee Kim Winslow waved off the fight.

Las Vegas-based welterweights Danny Davis Jr. (10-8-1) and Jorge Lopez (11-5) turned in an early thriller, as the two went back and forth on the feet for three full rounds. In the end, it was Davis Jr. who was awarded the unanimous-decision win.

The longer Davis Jr. tried unsuccessfully to bring the fight to the floor a handful of times and was forced instead to compete in the feet. That suited him just fine, as he danced and moved and worked long punches while also firing kicks to the body. Meanwhile, Lopez relied on more on power shots with his hands, and while he landed his fair share of big blows, he was never able to truly hurt his foe. That allowed Davis to rack up points, and he was awarded a unanimous-decision victory, 29-28 on all three cards.

In a back-and-forth bantamweight affair, Adam Acquaviva (2-1) earned a hard-fought split-decision win over a game Cody Maltais (2-1).

Maltais looked frequently to bring the fight to the floor, but Acquaviva defended each advance and remained on the feet. Forced to fight his opponent’s game, Maltais obliged by standing and trading in the pocket, but was Acquaviva’s accuracy that earned him the nod in a razor-thin decision

In the night’s first contest, featherweight prospect Bryson Gutches (3-0) kept his perfect career record intact with a second-round submission win over fellow Las Vegas resident Soslan Abanokov (4-2).

The two went back and forth in the grappling game in the opening frame, but when Gutches worked quickly to mount in the second, Abanokov turned and exposed his back. Gutches happily latched on and worked in a rear-naked choke, scoring a tapout win 67 seconds into the frame.

Ring card girls: Kat Kelley, Michelle Ulibarri, Emily Miller, Jessica Sutton and Janey B.
Dan Severn, Ray Sefo, Bas Rutten and Renzo Gracie.
