Hot and cold. Orthodox and southpaw stance. Noel and Abel Gevor – brothers, who could not be more different. Noel being the calm and quit one opposes Abel, who is acting far grittier. But they have one thing in common: the will to win. On August 16, both brothers will step into the ring to fight on the same card at the Erfurt Exhibition Hall in Thuringia, Germany. Trained by their stepfather and former world title challenger Khoren Gevor, 23 year-old Noel (12-0, 7 KOs) will take on Ismael Abdoul (54-29-2, 20 KOs) and 21 year-old Abel (7-0, 4 KOs) having a six-round bout scheduled versus Attila Palko (17-13, 13 KOs).

“It is good to see that my brother can prove himself on a bigger stage to make the next step,” says Noel Gevor, who already won the WBO-Youth Championship at Cruiserweight. His brother Abel, competing at light heavyweight, could well follow into his footsteps. “He is the better technician and the more talented boxer,” analyzes the older Gevor brother, but he knows that Abel still lacks his experience. “This will be his first fight in front of a larger crowd and he will have to handle that. Still, I am sure Abel will show what he is made of and beat Palko.”

However, Noel Gevor is fully focused on his own fight. After all, Gevor’s opponent already hold his own against the best the cruiserweight division had and still have to offer in the last decade. “Marco Huck, Yoan Pablo Hernandez, David Haye. I could go on with other current and former world champions Abdoul has fought. He does not go by the moniker ‘Cool’ for nothing. In 85 contests he only lost once by TKO. This fight is not going to be a walk in the park for me,” believes Gevor ahead of the scheduled eight-round challenge by the Belgian veteran. With a win on August 16, Gevor promises to fight for a title up next. “After I beat Abdoul, I will be back to either defend my WBO-Youth Belt or challenge for another one before long.”

Dirrell, 21-1-0 (14KO’s), will be making his return to action following an eighteen-month layoff. He last fought on February 2, 2013 winning a ten round unanimous decision over veteran Michael Gbenga in McAllen, Texas.

In the memorable first round of the Super Six Tournament the Flint, Michigan native was the victim of questionable judging travelling to Nottingham, England; seeming to defeat hometown favorite Carl Froch on October 17, 2009 only to suffer the only blemish on an otherwise undefeated career via split decision.

The second round of the tournament saw Dirrell rebound to defeat Abraham on March 27, 2010 by disqualification after being illegally hit while taking a knee in the eleventh round. Unable to continue and well ahead on the scorecards and having knocked Abraham down in the 4th round, Dirrell was awarded the victory. However, due to head injuries suffered from the illegal punch, he was unable to continue in the tournament.

Fighting out of Providence, Rhode Island, the 32-year old fellow southpaw, Biosse, has compiled a record of 15-4-2 (7 KO’s) over his five-year career.

In February of this year, the former University of Rhode Island football player gave highly touted world-ranked prospect J’Leon Love huge problems before succumbing to his talent in the 10th round.

Previous wins by Biosse on ESPN’s Friday Night Fights include victories over Joey McCreedy and Tim Connors in addition to a unanimous decision win over cross-state rival Joey Spina.

Campillo, who hails from Spain and won the WBA Light Heavyweight title in 2009 before losing the belt in 2010, is looking to score another victory following a seventh-round TKO win over Ricky Pow in his last fight.

“I’ve seen Campillo fight in person,” Williams said. “I fought on the undercard when he fought Tarvoris Cloud. Sampson Lewkowicz, Campillo’s advisor, said, “For Campillo, it’s the ‘last tango.’ He’s got to do his best and win, or it could be his last time in boxing….Campillo feels the same way and has said so, but he is confident that he can win this fight and then go on to win the world title.”

LAS VEGAS (July 29, 2014) – World Series of Fighting hosted a media conference call on Tuesday, a week and a half before “World Series of Fighting 12: Palomino vs. Gonzalez” is set to take place on Saturday, Aug. 9, at Las Vegas’ Hard Rock Hotel & Casino.

Featuring a lightweight headliner between exciting Peruvian veteran Luis “Baboon” Palomino (22-9) and undefeated Californian “Lethal” Lewis Gonzalez (9-0), “World Series of Fighting 12: Palomino vs. Gonzalez” will once again be televised on NBCSN.

Other matchups on the main-event card include: Brazilian brawler Ronny Markes (14-3) vs. Cully Butterfield (13-3) in a light heavyweight battle; Elvis “The King” Mutapcic (13-3) vs. Kelvin “The Mama’s Boy” Tiller (6-0) in a catchweight affair at 195 pounds; Olympian Alexis Vila (13-4) vs. Brandon “Hot Rod” Hempleman (9-2) in a bantamweight tilt; and bantamweights Bryson Hansen (7-1) and Matt “Robo” Sayles (2-0) will kick off the event.

RAY SEFO:
“We’ve had a lot of changes because of injuries but we’ve ended up with an amazing lineup headlined by Luis Palomino and Lewis Gonzalez…. Luis Palomino, as everyone knows, is a type of guy who lets it all hang out and comes out swinging for the fences. He’s a jiu jitsu guy and a wrestler but that doesn’t give you as much satisfaction as knocking somebody out. Lewis Gonzalez is also that type of guy. He’s a grinder. I like to compare him to some of the greats like Randy Couture and Chael Sonnen who brings a type of game to the table that is just grind, grind, grind.”

LUIS PALOMINO:
“I’m grateful that the WSOF has made me the main event for this WSOF 12. I think it’s a highlight of my life that I get to show a greater amount of people what I’ve been up to for the last seven years of my life. I’ve been working my butt off for this and I finally get a chance to show a lot of people what I’ve been doing.

“The game plan has been adjusted (to account for Gonzalez’s strong wrestling). We’ve seen when I get a little over-excited in my striking what happens. If he’s going to be waiting for me to miss, it’s going to be a very short fight. Accuracy is on point and I’ve been getting ready for this fight for like seven months. There is no off-season for me. My game has only improved. I’ve been facing wrestlers since the beginning of my career. I’ve said it once and I’ll say it again: he’s a talented fighter and I respect him, but he’s not bringing anything new to the table.”

LEWIS GONZALEZ:
“I have the mentality, like Ray said, as being known as a grinder. I work hard and I pride myself on having more heart than my opponent and I just keep the pace longer than they do. No matter what happens I just keep going forward and I just think my mental toughness is what has kept me undefeated so far.

“I was already offered the fight (against Justin Gaethje) back in January but unfortunately I got hurt. I can see why they gave it to Melvin (Guillard), but I think with a win next weekend, that would put me next in line for that title shot against whoever wins that fight.

“(Luis) is a very heavy-handed guy and I’ve watched a couple of his fights and his hands are dangerous. I’ve just got to play it smart and keep my range. The one thing that I’ve noticed was in the fights he’s won by knockouts that even before he knocks them out he’s taken down a couple of times. He swings for the fences and when he connects it’s devastating, but when he misses he leaves himself open for takedowns. I feel like I’m a stronger wrestler than most of the guys he has fought.

“The pressure builds a little every time (having an undefeated record). Especially being on the big stage and having that zero in the loss column. But when you get in the cage all the fights are the same and it all goes away. The nerves are up a little more but once you get in there it all goes away and the pressure is all off.”

RONNY MARKES:
“This camp I did not do my training in Rio (Grande do Norte, Brazil), but instead with my first coach. I did not train with as many big names as I have in the past, but I did have a lot of really great training partners…. So I felt just as great as when I go out and do my training camp in Rio.

“I’m really motivated for this fight. I’ve forgotten about my last loss and I think this is just a great opportunity for me to put on a good show and start winning fights again. That’s my goal.”

CULLY BUTTERFIELD:
“My first couple of fights I was just training out of the wrestling room where I went to college, and I didn’t really have any good coaching. I mean, the guy that was running it would pretty much just watch UFC and took advice from them on what happened on the show. I eventually moved away and started doing it full-time and that’s what did it for me. The good training and the good coaching, I actually became a full mixed martial artist instead of just a wrestler with no hands. So that’s what has made the difference in my game.”

ELVIS MUTAPCIC:
“I don’t try to look too much at other fighters because they are evolving all the time. But I’ve picked up on (Tiller’s) general habits. One of the things he’s very good at is he’s very explosive. He’s young, he’s hungry and he’s undefeated. When you’ve got a young undefeated guy, they have a little bit less fear, which is good for him and bad at the same time. He’s just an explosive guy who’s pretty well-rounded and he brings it.

With your loss to Jesse Taylor, what did you learn from that, and how have you changed your approach?
“I made a few mistakes leading up to that fight. I changed my style. I made mistakes leading up to the fight and in my training camp. I didn’t have the sense of urgency and I didn’t think he’d be able to control me the way he did. I learned the lesson the hard way. I’ve improved my wrestling quite a bit and this is the first camp where I’ve been able to train full-time without working a full-time job. I feel like I’m five years younger. My will for it is a lot deeper than it was before and I’ve just fixed some holes I had in that fight.”

KELVIN TILLER:
“I don’t like studying my opponents. If you look at my fights, I stick with my style. I like to pressure people a lot and use a lot of takedowns. On the outside I like to use jabs and kicks. I’ve been training really hard and I’m just grateful for this opportunity.”

After co-promoting (along with GH3 Promotions) the historic 200th episode of “SHOBOX: The New Generation,” last Friday, July 25, at the Turning Stone Resort Casino, Greg Cohen of Greg Cohen Promotions wishes to congratulate his two victorious fighters, Cecil McCalla and Tony Luis.

Welterweight McCalla (19-0, 6 KOs), of Randallstown, Maryland, won a dominating eight-round unanimous decision over Watsonville, California’s Oscar Godoy (13-3, 6 KOs), while Canada’s “The Lightning” Luis (18-2, 7 KOs) handed Newark, New Jersey’s Wanzell “Venom” Ellison (11-1-1, 5 KOs) his first defeat via unanimous decision in a lightweight eight-rounder.

While many experts had predicted McCalla would be in tough against the capable Godoy, McCalla made it look easy and cruised to a wide unanimous decision with only one judge giving Godoy even a round. Scores were 80-72, 80-72 and 79-73.

McCalla’s clever upper body movement and lead right hand backed up and befuddled Godoy, backing him to the ropes and slowing the Californian’s work rate to minimal levels.

Luis, of Cornwall, Ontario, was considered an underdog in his battle against formerly undefeated Ellison, but stuck to his game plan and worked the body to great effect. Ellison had a few moments in the middle rounds, but the determined Luis wrested back control and cruised to the victory by scores of 79-73, 77-75 and 78-74.

“Both of my fighters were given strong tests and both passed with flying colors,” said Greg Cohen. “Cecil’s performance was strong enough to solidify him as someone to watch in the welterweight division, which is something I’ve known for a long time. And Tony Luis came back from a questionable loss to show what he’s learned since then. He stuck to the strategy the team laid out for him and reignited his career with a clear win over a very talented opponent.”

Cohen says he’s already back at work, finding the next step for McCalla and Luis.

“They’ll both be back in high-profile fights very soon. I’m very proud to be working with both of these fighters and they deserve high praise for coming through when tested.”

The German boxing commission (Bund Deutscher Berufsboxer – BDB) officially changed the result of last Saturday’s female world championship between Christina Hammer and Anne Sophie Mathis to a “no contest”. By doing so the BDB followed the ruling of the World Boxing Federation (WBF) which already announced that change yesterday. The World Boxing Organization (WBO) still has to decide about the result.

The reason for the decision: In the fifth round of their WBO-/WBF Junior Middleweight Championship bout Christina Hammer blocked Mathis’ left arm in a clinch. Referee Manfred Küchler didn’t stop the action so Mathis continuously hit Hammer with her free right arm to the left side of her head. Hammer went down from those punches and couldn’t continue.

However, instead of declaring Mathis the winner by KO, referee Küchler disqualified the Frenchwoman for alleged rabbit punches. Later on Hammer said that she was knocked out by elbow shots. The slowmotion clearly showed that there were no illegal punches at all but that Hammer was fouling instead by holding Mathis’ left arm and still got knocked out.

The Chilemba-Cummings fight is an interesting light heavyweight bout. Chilemba, 27, from South Africa, is coming off a brutal ten-round unanimous decision victory over Denis Grachev on March 15th. Cummings is looking to snap a two-fight losing streak. In his last fight he knocked down his opponent, Azea Augustama, in the first round but was narrowly defeated with all three judges scoring the eight-round bout 76-75. Cummings and Chilemba are slated to face each other for ten rounds of light heavyweight action.

Another undefeated Russian, Dmitry Mikhaylenko (16-0, 6 KOs) will be featured on the Kovalev-Caparello undercard in a junior middleweight match-up. Mikhaylenko, 28, is from Gelendzhik, Russia and will make his US debut. Prior to this fight, Mikhaylenko fought exclusively in Russia. He will take on Brooklyn native, Sechew “Iron Horse” Powell (26-5, 15 KOs), for eight rounds. In Mikhaylenko’s last fight he defeated Karen Avetisyan via unanimous decision in ten rounds on Feb. 15, 2014. Sechew, a Southpaw, is a 35 year old looking to snap a three fight losing streak and prove he still belongs in the division.

QUEENS, NY (JULY 25, 2014)–Rising Bantamweight contender Elton Dharry (15-5-1, 9 KO’s) is very close to some big fights but he knows that he has to get past Antwan Robertson (9-9-1, 6 KO’s) in a scheduled 10-round bout at the Amazura Concert Hall in Queens, New York. The bout will headline The first ever Elton Dharry promoted card, this Friday night, August 1.

“Everything is going well in training, I have no complaints”, said Dharry.

Dharry knows that he will have a tough foe in front of him in Robertson. Robertson is generally durable and comes to fight and has a couple of quality wins on his resume over the likes of undefeated fighters Brandon Quintana & Brad Patraw.

“I have seen him fight. He moves some, he boxes some and he fights as well. It is nothing that I haven’t seen before. I have been boxing a long time and I will be ready for anything that he brings on August 1.”

Dharry has been one of the fastest rising boxers in the Bantamweight division as he has won 12 fights in a row. The fact that he has the right team behind him is all the difference in the world.

“Early in my career I had no one behind me. I took fights on short notice and was involved in fights that were bad decisions and because I took those fights on short notice, I did not have the proper preparation.”

Dharry has decided to take his career into his own hands and he formed his promotional company with the purpose of being able to enhance his own career and give other local fighters opportunities.

“I have to make my own opportunities and this is what I want to do. This is something that I am starting and it also gives me something I can focus on after boxing.”

With a win, there have been some title opportunities presented to Dharry but he is not looking past Robertson.

“My focus is on August 1. I know I have to win this and then I can focus on the bigger fights when the time comes.”

German amateur star Stefan Haertel will make his professional debut on August 16. The 26 year-old, who signed a long-term contract with Team Sauerland in May, will face Oleg Fedotovs (18-14, 12 KOs) at the Erfurt Exhibition Hall in Thuringia, Germany.

‘’After many successful years as an amateur I am looking forward to this new challenge,’’ said the Berlin-based Haertel. ‘’It has been six months since my last competitive fight and I can’t wait to get back into the ring, shake of the rust and show everyone what I am capable of.’’

Haertel, who is training with renowned German coach Karsten Roewer, will be campaigning at Super Middleweight, joining Sauerland stable mates Arthur Abraham, Mikkel Kessler and George Groves in the hotly contested division.

Jose Benavidez Jr. remained perfect by stopping Henry Auraad in the 1st round of their scheduled 8-round Welterweight bout at the Celebrity Theater in Phoenix, Arizona.

Benavidez scored a knockdown with a right hand. Auraad was hurt and a big flurry dropped him for a second time. Auraad got to his feet but was stumbling and the referee stopped the bout at 1:50 of round two.

Benavidez Jr., 145 3/4 lbs of Phoenix is now 21-0 with 15 knockouts. Auraad, 146 lbs of Miami, FL is now 16-9-1.

Oscar Valdez remained undefeated by scoring a 8-round unanimous decision over Juan Ruiz in a Featherweight bout.

Ruiz was deducted a point for excessive holding and Valdez won by scores of 80-71 on all cards.
