MARVIN CORDOVA JR. READY TO MAKE A COMEBACK

LAS VEGAS (May 5, 2014) – Former world title contender, Marvin Cordova Jr. (21-2-1, 11 KOs), is ready to make a comeback. Cordova Jr. is hungrier than ever, after serving a 3-year prison term for crimes he was arrested for in April of 2010.

Cordova Jr., who now resides in Las Vegas, NV, recently completed a reform program in his home state of Colorado. At age 29, a matured and focused Cordova Jr. is prepared to get his boxing career back on track. He feels he’s learned his lesson.

“I made some unwise decisions as a young man growing up,” said Marvin Cordova Jr. “I did time with lifers (men who have been served life sentence’s) in some of the worst prisons in America. Being locked up with those types of people really opened my eyes. I’m really sorry for the things I did in the past. I took my freedom for granted and I’ve learned from my mistakes. I’m eager to get back in the ring and continue my boxing career.”

As an amateur, Cordova Jr. defeated the likes of Danny Jacobs, Andre Berto, Lamont Peterson, Anthony Dirrell and Mike Alvarado to name a few. In addition Cordova Jr. knocked out Austin Trout and beat him twice in amateurs. He was the lead sparring partner for Manny Pacquiao when the Philippine star was getting ready to fight Oscar De La Hoya.

In his last fight, he suffered a close decision lost to Josesito Lopez (32-6, 19 KOs). His only other loss came against Dennis Laurente (47-5-5, 28 KOs), another close decision defeat. He has a draw technical draw against Victor Ortiz (29-5-2, 22 KOs), when the bout was stopped due to an accidental head butt.

Cordova Jr. will continue to make his comeback and make his return to the ring in the very near future, most likely in June.

“I’ve competed, sparred and fought against some of the best fighters in the world,” continued Cordova Jr. “I know I have the ability to be successful in boxing. I’m just ready to work hard and follow my dream of becoming a world champion.”

Adviser Zeferino Ramirez believes Cordova Jr. has the talent to make a triumphant return to boxing.

“With a little guidance and support, I know Marvin will make a stunning comeback.” said Ramirez. “He’s gotten a second chance at life and I really believe he’s going to make the best of it. If everything goes as planned, I’m hoping to get back in the ring next month.”

London (5 May) Fred ‘The General’ Mundraby is ready “to do battle” with Kid Galahad for the vacant Commonwealth crown on May 10.

The Australian super bantamweight champion, Mundraby, is looking forward to testing his skills against the “technical and skilled” Galahad at Ponds Forge Arena, Sheffield, live on Channel 5.

“Obviously securing the win for my country will be awesome, but at the end of the day, we are just two men going to do battle,” Mundraby said.

“He is a very technical and skilled fighter and this is a great opportunity for me to test my skills against a great opponent such as Kid Galahad.”

Mundraby, 26, has an impressive record of 15 wins with seven knockouts and comes to the UK out of Cairns, Queensland.

Fighting in Great Britain for the first time in his career, he is very excited to “entertain the crowd” and thrive in the lively atmosphere.

“I am expecting a very excited and enthusiastic atmosphere from the crowd which I am use to and enjoy!” Mundraby said.

“It gets me pumped and ready to fight, but I don’t let the moment control me, I am in control of it.

“I’ve heard great things about the UK! Aren’t the Spice Girls from the UK? Haha I am looking forward to what this opportunity has to offer and the fans can expect a humble boxer with a cheeky sense of humour!

“I always like to entertain the crowd!”

Mundraby faces the Qatar-born Sheffield star Kid Galahad, who won the European super bantamweight title at the same venue just last month.

The undefeated former British and WBC International champion, Galahad, will not be overlooking ‘The General’ as he looks to secure win number 17 in front of his home crowd and close in on his world title aspirations.

Also scheduled to fight in Sheffield is undefeated heavyweight sensation Hughie Lewis Fury, Morden’s former British champion and European title contender Lenny Daws as well as a whole host of local talent on the bill.

LEE NOBLE WILL PUT “HIS HEART ON HIS SLEEVE” ON MAY 10

London (5 May) Lee Noble will put his “heart on his sleeve” when he fights on the the undercard to Kid Galahad’s fight for the vacant Commonwealth title, live on Channel 5.

The 27-year-old light middleweight, who has three straight victories to his name since returning to the sport in November, can feel “the momentum building” ahead of his fight on May 10 at Ponds Forge Arena, Sheffield.

“It’s really good at the minute – I’ve always known and all the lads in the gym will tell you, that I’ve always had the talent and the ability but I haven’t been 100 percent focussed,” Lee said.

“But, my mindset is completely different to two years ago – I want to succeed.

“My training is going fantastic, I can feel the momentum building, I’ve just got to keep going – I’m just going to take it one step at a time.”

The Barnsley fighter, Noble, who has been sparring with newly crowned British light heavyweight champion Bob Ajisafe and former WBC world light welterweight champion Junior Witter, returned to the ring in November, after a one year absence, to give the sport his all and retire without any regrets.

Since returning, he boasts three straight victories, including a points win over local rival Dave Fidler for the International Masters light middleweight title.

“Since November I’ve been on it constantly, I’ve not been going out with my mates and I’ve told them all not to bother ringing me at weekends or anything,” Lee said.

“All I want to do is box – a couple of years dedication and see where I get and that way at least I know when I retire from boxing that I did give it a go and I gave it my all.

“I want no questions, no stones unturned so that I know what I could have achieved and what I didn’t achieve.

“Everybody is looking at me in a different way – I want to box the best kids – I can’t get any more experience, I’ve boxed world champions, European champions, British champions – I’ve been in with the best.

“My heart is going on my sleeve and 10th of May you’ll see I’m going for it.”

Lee fights on the undercard of fellow Ingle Gym fighter and newly crowned European super bantamweight champion Kid Galahad as he takes on Australian champion Fred ‘The General’ Mundraby for the vacant Commonwealth title.

MURRAY BOUT UPGRADED, PLUS RETURN OF ‘TOMMY GUN’ OOSTHUIZEN

Martin Murray
World-ranked Martin Murray’s June 21 middleweight bout against Max Bursak in Monte Carlo has been sanctioned by the WBC for the vacant Silver belt.

This is in recognition of Murray’s standing among the world’s elite middleweights and follows former holder Patrick Nielsen opting to fight for the WBA Interim title next month. Murray is rated #4 by the World Boxing Council.

The Briton heads the “KO at the Casino” tournament in Monaco, a first class bill that now also includes unbeaten former IBO super-middleweight champion Tommy Oosthuizen (22-0-2, 13 KOs) of South Africa.

“This is a giant step towards securing Martin a crack at the world title,” said Berman from his base in Johannesburg. “Hopefully the smoke clears after the Sergio Martinez –Miguel Cotto WBC championship fight next month and Martin comes into the reckoning. He’s been more than patient and is one of the few fighters with a legitimate chance of toppling any of the champions.”

Oosthuizen, meanwhile, will make his light-heavyweight debut against former African champion Doudou Ngumbu (31-5, 11 KOs) of the DRC, who is based in France.

Southpaw Oosthuizen hasn’t fought since November, having endured a troubled few months in which he broke from his promoter (and later reconciled) and also had a stint in rehabilitation. Fortunately he is back in the gym and returned to full fitness, hoping to make an impact on the exciting light-heavyweight division.

In another development, Golden Gloves is on the verge of announcing an exciting replacement fight following Junior Makabu reneging on his contract and thus forfeiting his place on the Monte Carlo bill. The cruiserweight abruptly walked out on Golden Gloves last week.

“This has now become a legal matter,” said Berman.

Known as one of the most exclusive vacation destinations in the world and situated on the Mediterranean Sea in South West Europe, Monaco attracts millions of visitors each year. The Monte Carlo Casino, owned and operated by the Société des bains de mer de Monaco, it is the premiere casino destination in Europe. The Monte Carlo Casino continues to attract some of the wealthiest and most well-known celebrities and aristocrats throughout the world.

London (5 May) Kash Ali is aiming for his first stoppage win on May 10 at Ponds Forge Arena, Sheffield.

The undefeated heavyweight feels “ready for anything” and believes whoever he fights is “in trouble” on the undercard to Kid Galahad’s fight for the vacant Commonwealth title, live on Channel 5.

“I can’t wait to fight, the last time I boxed was November, so it’s been a good five/six months and I’m ready to go now,” Kash said.

“I want that first stoppage, I’m going to give it some this time, be nasty in there.

“I know I’ve got the power to knock anybody out – I’ve learnt from my six fights and this time I’ll put the pressure on, for definite.

“I’m going to be on it, whatever my opponent brings I’ll be ready for it – they’re in trouble, no doubt.”

The 22-year-old Rotherham man, who trains at the famous Ingle Gym in Sheffield, is undefeated in six contests, with six wins and is looking to reach the top to repay the support of his friends and family.

“I just want to be at the top, I have faith and it means a lot to my family and all of my friends,” Kash said.

“They’re all behind me and I know they would all be very happy for me to succeed.”

“Donovan looked terrific and really impressed the huge crowd we had on APRIL 18” said Bobby Hitz, President of Hitz Boxing. “We’re very excited to bring him back for our fans at our next “FIGHT NIGHT” event on Friday, JUNE 20.”

Further details on George’s bout and a full undercard will be announced shortly.

Tickets still available for Championship Title boxing May 9 at Dover Downs Hotel & Casino

DOVER, Del. (May 2, 2014) — Dover Downs Hotel & Casino with Champ’s Management host a championship boxing event on Friday, May 9, in the Rollins Center® at 7 p.m. The headline bout features featherweight Cornelius Lock (22-6-2), from Detroit, Mich. vs. William Gonzalez (26-5 with 22 KOs) from Managua, Nicaragua, for the NABA Feather Championship Title.

In the co-feature, “The New” Ray Robinson (17-2-0), of Philadelphia, Pa., fresh off his NABO Championship Title win in February in the Rollins Center, is not one to rest on his laurels. In an interview with Rick Scharmberg of Fight News, Robinson stated, “Now it is time to go for the bigger titles!” On tonight’s fight, Robinson says, “I’m excited to get back to show off my talent at Dover Downs Hotel & Casino. I’ve trained really hard for this fight, and I’m sure this guy will bring his best. But, like I said before, it’s my time to shine.”

Undefeated super featherweight turned junior lightweight, Omar “Super O” Douglas (11-0-0), of Wilmington, Del., is a former Golden Gloves star and current NABA Championship Title holder who fights the eight-rounder tonight. “Training camp has been going great,” said Douglas. “I’ve continued to push myself since winning the NABA title in November … I just feel like I’m one of the best junior welterweight prospects in the world, and it’s my time. I just want to thank Dover Downs Hotel & Casino for bringing me back. You can expect fireworks May 9th and my hand to be raised once the dust settles.” Enjoy the show folks; there is a reason Super O is undefeated.

Lightweight “Joltin” Joey Tiberi (12-1-0), of Newark, Del., is eager to continue a win streak following his fourth round victory last February over veteran Charles Jones when Tiberi sent him to the mat four times. Look for the same tenacity in Tiberi May 9.

Cruiserweight Alex “Double Barrel” Guerrero (10-0-1), of Salisbury, Md., says, “I am excited to be fighting tonight as the newest member of Champ Management Group. I’ve been training very hard and want a solid performance for the crowd and my fans. Each fight is the most important because a loss can devastate a career. All my opponents have tried to step up to beat an undefeated fighter, but I get more determined to make sure that doesn’t happen. Every opponent is an obstacle in the way of my goal, and my job is to destroy that obstacle. I just happen to love my job. I also love the fact that Dover feels like fighting at home since so many people come up to support me from Salisbury. My fans are a very important part of our team.”

Cruiserweight Earl “The Bull” Platt (4-1-0), of Virginia Beach, Va., said a winner will risk losing to win. “I know my opponent trained hard. I have trained hard. Now it’s time to fight.”

Heavyweight Frankie “The Freight Train” Filippone (14-4-1), of Norfolk, Va., has gone the distance in his last 13 fights and will face Yasin “The Assassin” Rashid (7-5-0), of Brooklyn, N.Y., both looking for another notch in his win column.

Tickets are $45 – $95 and may be purchased by calling VIP Services at 800-711-5882 or visiting doverdowns.com. Event, times and card are subject to change or cancellation without notice.

New Start Time for Marquez-Alvarado Undercard at the Forum

Marquez ESPN_121203_004a
INGLEWOOD, CALIFORNIA (May 2, 2014) – Boxing’s return to the Forum (3900 West Manchester Blvd., Inglewood, Calif. 90305) will start a little sooner than originally announced. The historic inaugural brawl on Saturday May 17, featuring four-division world champion and Méxican icon JUAN MANUEL “Dinamita” MÁRQUEZ battling former junior welterweight world champion and the pride of Colorado “Mile High” MIKE ALVARADO in the main event, will now start at a new earlier time — 3:15 p.m. PT, with doors opening at 3:00 p.m. PT.

“We wanted to make boxing’s return to the Forum something special for the fans and the best way to do that was to add more bouts to the undercard. We expect more than 10 bouts on this show,” said Hall of Fame promoter Bob Arum. “However, since Márquez-Alvarado will be televised live on HBO®, we needed to push the start time of the undercard up to 3:15 p.m. to accommodate all the fights.”

Márquez (55-7-1, 40 KOs), of México City, a longtime Forum stalwart who never lost a fight at the legendary boxing venue, and Alvarado (34-2, 23 KOs), of Denver, CO., will collide in a 12-round World Boxing Organization (WBO) welterweight title elimination bout. The Márquez-Alvarado welterweight rumble will be televised live on HBO World Championship Boxing®, beginning at 10:15 p.m. ET/PT. The winner will be declared the mandatory challenger to WBO welterweight champion Manny Pacquiao. Márquez and Alvarado boast a combined record of 89-9-1 (63 KOs) — a winning percentage of 90% and a victory by knockout ratio of 71%.

The undercard will be announced shortly.

MANUEL CHARR vs. ALEXANDER POVETKIN ON MAY 30th IN MOSCOW!

alexander_povetkin_image
“Diamond Boy” Manuel Charr is heading to Moscow again to face former world champion Alexander Povetkin on May 30th for the WBC international heavyweight championship. “This will be an awesome fight”, says Charr. “I am very proud that I got invited to fight Povetkin and reached an agreement with his handlers. This is my big chance to get in line for another world title shot. The winner will move up the WBC ratings to a top position. And one thing I know for sure: If I can beat Povetkin in Moscow, I can and will definitely go on to do what I promised Don José Sulaiman years ago: I will become heavyweight champion of the world!”

Charr and Povetkin know each other well from their time as training partners at Sauerland Event in Berlin. In the meantime both men left Sauerland and go their own ways: Manuel Charr is promoting under the banner “Diamond Boy Promotion” while Alexander Povetkin joined Russian oligarch Andrey Ryabinsky who granted him a world title fight against unified champion Wladimir Klitschko in Moscow last year which Povetkin lost by unanimous decision. Charr also had the chance to face a Klitschko in Moscow for a world title when he challenged Wladimir’s elder brother Vitali for the WBC crown in September 2012. The fight was stopped because of a cut over Charr’s eye. The “Diamond Boy” still claims that he was robbed and that he could have continued.

“I know Moscow and Moscow knows me”, states Charr. “That’s why I immediately accepted the offer. I will not feel like fighting abroad. I have so many fans and friends in Moscow that I will turn this into my home crowd. And of course, I am traveling with a big team and entourage. Together we will conquer Moscow, beat Povetkin, bring the WBC international championship back to Germany and then go on to become world champion. This fight is the key.”

Charr and his trainer team with Patrick Dobroschi and Clive Salz have four weeks left to get ready and in shape for the bout. “We will only have a rather short camp but I am still in shape from my fight against Kevin Johnson on April 12th so I won’t have any problems”, says the “Diamond Boy”. “I promise to all of my fans that I will be in the best shape ever. It will be an epic battle and I will win it!”

JORDAN ‘THE THRILL’ GILL “ITCHING” TO GET IN THE RING ON MAY 10

London (2 May) Jordan ‘The Thrill’ Gill is feeling “brilliant” and “itching” to get back in the ring on May 10th at Ponds Forge Arena, Sheffield.

The undefeated 19-year-old super featherweight feels he is maturing and developing as a fighter and “can’t wait” to show the results on the undercard to Kid Galahad’s fight for the vacant Commonwealth title, live on Channel 5.

“I’m feeling brilliant, I’ve been training now for weeks on end since my last fight and I’m itching to get back in and do it all again,” Jordan said.

“I’m still only 19, I’m still developing and since my last fight I think my body has changed significantly – I’m filling out a lot more, getting stronger, I’m bigger at the weight and we’ll see what damage we can do on the 10th.

“I’ve been sparring with Kid Galahad, Leigh Wood, Atif Shafiq, I feel like I’ve improved since my last fight so I’m looking to showcase the results on the night.”

Gill boasts a perfect record of nine straight victories and in his last contest won his first professional title, picking up the vacant British Masters Bronze light-welterweight belt with an emphatic second-round knockout over Michael Stupart in Peterborough.

Jordan, who hopes to “follow in the footsteps” of the many champions that have been produced by the Ingle Gym in Sheffield, feels he is learning all the time and is motivated by the fighters training around him.

“I’m doing all the learning in the gym from the guys fighting for major titles soon,” Jordan said.

“Like Kid Galahad, who has won the British title, the European title and now fights for the Commonwealth title in his last three fights.

“I’m watching every move and pinpointing what makes them successful and doing it myself and that’s why hopefully I’ll be successful and follow in their footsteps.

“In my last three fights I’ve been hit once, I’m practicing what I do in the gym in the ring and I think I’m going to get some hard fights now coming up and you’re going to see the best of me.”

Jordan fights on the undercard of fellow Ingle Gym fighter and newly crowned European super bantamweight champion Kid Galahad as he takes on Australian champion Fred ‘The General’ Mundraby for the vacant Commonwealth title.

Also scheduled to fight in Sheffield is undefeated heavyweight sensation Hughie Lewis Fury and Morden’s former British champion and European title contender Lenny Daws, as well as a whole host of local talent.

‘I’M GOING TO GIVE THE FANS WHAT THEY WANT TO SEE’ VOWS MAYWEATHER AHEAD OF MEGACLASH WITH MAIDANA THIS WEEKEND ON BOXNATION

Floyd_Mayweather
LONDON (May 2) – Boxing’s star attraction Floyd Mayweather has vowed to give fans an edge-of-the-seat thriller against Marcos Maidana this Saturday night.

The pound-for-pound kingpin faces the rugged Argentine at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, live and exclusive on BoxNation, with the promise to stand and engage with the renowned knockout artist when they clash at the iconic boxing coliseum.

‘Money’ Mayweather has predicted that this fight will play out different from his last two bouts, against Robert Guerrero and Canelo Alvarez respectively, with the superstar looking to stand in the pocket and make it an all-action affair.

“I may have three fights after this, I’m really not sure. I don’t know what I’m going to do. But I can promise you this: Saturday, I’m going to give you guys what you want to see,” said Mayweather.

“It’s not going to be the same fight that I fought with Canelo; it’s not going to be the same fight that I fought with Robert Guerrero. It’s going to be a totally different fight. No gameplan at all. I’m going to be right there.

“I think styles make fights. I’m looking to win and I’m looking to win very impressively. I’m pretty sure he’s coming straight ahead and we’ll see how the fight plays out,” he said.

Mayweather is used to the biggest nights having been involved in the highest grossing event of all time when his bout with Oscar De La Hoya generated a stunning $136m in 2007, before shattering that record last year when his battle with Alvarez raked in $150m.

The record-breaker has proved that he is able to handle the biggest of occasions, a level which will be new to the iron willed Maidana.

“I’ve been here before and know what it takes to win a fight of this magnitude. When the best fight the best, it takes more than just power. It takes more than just a great heart. You have to dig deep. You have to be mentally strong, not just physically strong, to win a fight like this,” said Mayweather.

“As of late, Marcos Maidana has been making a lot of noise. Is he one of the best in the sport? Yes he is. But I am the best. And that’s the difference.

“He’s tough, he’s rugged, he’s a champion. I respect him as a man, but come Saturday you have to earn my respect as a fighter,” he stated.

Though the favourite going into the fight, the pride of Grand Rapids, Michigan, knows he can’t underestimate the fierce Argentine.

“I never go in a game with a game plan. My game plan is to win and be first,” said Mayweather. “I can’t overlook this guy. He earned it. Argentina is a great country and you all have a true champion. He’s a true champion, he’s a warrior, and he got here somehow, someway. He represents his country real well. I’m a worldwide figure, but I bleed the red, white and blue first.”

The stardom for one of sport’s most recognised faces comes at a price, however, with Mayweather not too keen on some of the trappings that fame presents.

“When I just sit back sometimes in my bed and I turn on the TV and just look, I think ‘I miss doing that by myself’. I want to go places by myself; I want do things by myself. You think I always want to go to the movie theatre and take security?

“I want to go to the casino by myself and play blackjack by myself. If I have a wife I want to be able to travel with just me and her. I want to be able to do one-on-one things,” said Mayweather.

“But, guess what? It’s a gift and it’s a curse because God could easily have put someone else in this position. So I say, it’s me and I got to take it for what it’s for and just be thankful I’m one of the chosen ones,” he said.

It will be the unrelenting and hardened Maidana, though, who hopes he is the one chosen to hand the majestic Mayweather his first loss.

The 30-year-old from the rough streets of Santa Fe in Argentina was unapologetic ahead of the biggest fight of his career.

“No one has given anything to me,” said Maidana. “The opportunity, I earned it myself. I know this is a very difficult fight. That’s why I trained like never before. Mayweather is a great fighter, but I don’t give a f*** about this guy. It’s very important to land the combos and keep at him.

“I’m prepared for whatever he brings. If he wants to trade blows, we’ll trade blows. If he wants to run, we can handle that, too. We’re prepared for everything. I’m relaxed. We’re good. I talk a little trash because it gets me mad, gets me ready,” he said.

The card this weekend also sees British star Amir Khan back in action for the first time since his close victory over Julio Diaz in April of last year.

The former unified light-welterweight world champion takes on Brooklyn’s Luis Collazo for WBC silver welterweight world title.

“The time is here and I can’t wait to get in the ring,” said Khan. “This is my chance to make a big statement in what is my first fight in the welterweight division and I’m ready to grab that chance. It’s going to be a fight full of excitement and action and I’m going to show that I’m better than I’ve ever been before.”

His 33-year opponent was in an equally upbeat mood stating he’s going to make it an inhospitable welcome to the 147lb division.

“This is the highest of the high for a boxer and I’m humbled by the opportunity. It’s been a tremendous ride. I’m blessed to be here and soak this moment in,” said Collazo.

“Khan, welcome to the welterweight division. I’m going to give the fight fans what they want; make sure you tune in and don’t miss it. It’s going to be a special night,” he said.

Brash-talking Adrien Broner is also set to appear on the card as he steps down to light-welterweight to face Mexican-American Carlos Molina following his loss to Maidana last December.

Mayweather vs. Maidana/Khan vs. Collazo is live on BoxNation (Sky 437/490HD & Virgin 546) this Saturday midnight. Visit www.boxnation.com to subscribe.

“THE MOMENT: MAYWEATHER VS. MAIDANA” UNDERCARD FINAL PRESS CONFERENCE QUOTES

LAS VEGAS (May, 1 2014) – Undercard fighters from “THE MOMENT: Mayweather vs. Maidana” took the stage at the Hollywood Theatre at MGM Grand today for the final press conference before their fights this Saturday, May 3, at the MGM Grand Garden Arena live on SHOWTIME PPV®.

Below is what the fighters from this stellar televised undercard had to say:

AMIR “KING” KHAN, Former Unified Super Lightweight World Champion

“This is a great event, every fight here could be a main event. There’s a lot of great fighters up here.

“I’m excited to put on a great show. I’ve trained my way up to this weight. The hand speed and movement is always going to be here but there are a lot of news things you will see.

“I’m going to put on a great performance and I hope we give the fans what they want.

“Spending this time with (trainer) Virgil Hunter has only made me a better boxer. This is the only time I’ve had time off to rest and take a break from boxing.

“As long as I put on a great performance I’ll earn that shot [at fighting Mayweather]. But, to be honest, I’m not looking past Collazo. I need to win this fight and take it from there. I need to put on a good performance and we’ll see what happens.

“It’s going to be a hard fight. It will be tough and exciting, but I think I have all the tools to beat him.

“I’ve been working hard and improving myself. It’s not like I’ve been taking time off. I’ve been sparring and working on my style.

“He’s coming off a big win so I know it won’t be an easy fight. I’m looking to make a big statement on the Mayweather undercard.”

LUIS COLLAZO, WBA International Welterweight Champion

“This is the highest of the high for a boxer and I’m humbled by the opportunity.

“It’s been a tremendous ride. I’m blessed to be here and soak this moment in.

“Khan, welcome to the welterweight division. Once the bell rings you’re going to see the best Collazo you’ve ever seen.

“I’m going to give the fight fans what they want; make sure you tune in and don’t miss it. It’s going to be a special night.”

ADRIEN “THE PROBLEM” BRONER, Former Three-Division World Champion

“I’m coming to do damage. I’m punching with bad intentions and I’m back on my A-game.

“I’m thankful God slowed me down and showed me how to be humble. I know he can take it all away.

“I’m still that same flashy, hungry young man.

“I feel disrespected. I’m a main event fighter. You can put Adrien Broner anywhere. You put Carlos Molina in front of me, and I feel disrespected.”

CARLOS MOLINA, Super Lightweight Contender

“We’re ready. Come Saturday night this is pay-per-view, so you know we’re going for broke on this one. We’re letting our hands fly.

“I know I’m going to have a lot of great fans after this victory.”

J’LEON LOVE, Undefeated Super Middleweight Title

“This is a crazy card to be on. All these guys up here are coming to put on a show and I’m looking to do the same thing.

“I know Periban is a tough, rugged fighter and I’m prepared for that. I’ve had a great camp. My trainer pushed me to the limit.

“We’re in this to win and we want to let you know that I am the future of this sport.”

MARCO ANTONIO PERIBAN, NABF Super Middleweight World Champion

“I just want to invite everybody to watch this fight. It’s going to be great, and I’m prepared.

“Saturday is going to be a great show, a great fight. I’m well prepared for this. I’m going to give every ounce of me so that I can regain a title shot. That’s what I’m here for.

“I know that J’Leon is a strong fighter and I have to give a strong performance. That’s the only way I can win.”

LEONARD ELLERBE, CEO of Mayweather Promotions

“Thanks to everyone for coming out. Like others have said, you can’t call this an ‘undercard’ because these are all great fighters. It will be an exciting card.

“The official weigh-in is Friday, and it starts at 2 o’clock. Floyd wanted to do something different. 2 Chainz will be performing live at the weigh-in. It will be an event within an event.”

RICHARD SCHAEFER, CEO of Golden Boy Promotions

“This isn’t an ‘undercard.’ This is an accumulation of three main events under the Super Bowl of boxing between Mayweather and Maidana. Each one of the TV fights could have its own TV platform and venue and would be a main event in many other boxing programs.

“We always feel very comfortable in Las Vegas, the fight capital of the world. It is very special for these fighters to fight under the bright lights of Las Vegas. It really is an entertainer’s dream to perform in Las Vegas and it is a fighter’s dream to box here in Las Vegas.

“Of course when you think of Las Vegas, MGM is the place to be. The headquarters of boxing worldwide, it is where all the big fights are happening. We are very happy to be back here at the MGM Grand with this terrific quadrupleheader supported by some of the sport’s young, rising stars.”

STEPHEN ESPINOZA, Executive Vice President & General Manager of SHOWTIME Sports

“There is one thing that we know about Floyd Mayweather events – they are massive, and they generate more attention, more publicity and more awareness than any other event in the sport.

“That attention, that visibility, means that Mayweather events attract huge numbers of casual boxing fans, and non-fans, people who may only watch one or two shows a year.

“In short, this is not an event where you skip the undercard. At six o’clock on Saturday night, you have to be in front of your television if you’re at home, or in your seat if you’re in the arena. If you’re not, you’ll be missing the best this sport has to offer.

“In Broner against Molina, we have the very talented Adrien Broner, who has a lot of questions to answer after his setback last December. But Carlos Molina is here to make a statement of his own.

“Khan versus Collazo is the very definition of a high-stakes fight. Collazo is a tough veteran who’s fought the best welterweights in the world during his career. He’s come out on the short end of some very close decisions. Luis is getting the opportunity of a lifetime.

“Amir Khan is fighting for high stakes as well, with the possibility of launching himself onto an even bigger stage as a possible Mayweather opponent.”

ATIF SHAFIQ FEELING “REALLY CONFIDENT” AHEAD OF MAY 10 FIGHT

London (1 May) Atif Shafiq is “excited” and feeling “really confident” ahead of his fight on May 10 at Ponds Forge Arena, Sheffield.

The 20-year-old lightweight feels he is “maturing physically” and is looking forward to “another big show” on the undercard to Kid Galahad’s fight for the vacant Commonwealth title, live on Channel 5.

“I’m feeling really confident ahead of my fight on May 10th,” Atif said.

“I’ve had some great sparring for this camp – the likes of Kid Galahad, Leigh Wood, Jordan Gill, Sam O’maison, Samir Mouneimne from Hull, so we’ve had a lot of variety.

“I’ve been doing a lot of strength and conditioning and I can feel myself filling out a bit more and maturing physically – Every time I go into a fight I’m feeling different and more mature as a fighter.”

The Rotherham man, known as ‘Unique’ boasts a perfect 10 wins from 10 fights and in his last contest in March he overcame Michael Mooney over four rounds and admits it was a good learning fight as he looks to keep progressing.

“I felt really good last time out and my opponent wasn’t actually the weight I was meant to be fighting at and he had about half a stone on me,” Atif said.

“It was another good learning experience, I enjoyed it and now I know that when I do fight someone my own weight it will be a lot easier, more comfortable and more natural to me – I’m excited and really looking forward to another big show.”

Atif fights on the undercard of fellow Ingle Gym fighter and newly crowned European super bantamweight champion Kid Galahad as he takes on Australian champion Fred ‘The General’ Mundraby for the vacant Commonwealth title.

Also scheduled to fight in Sheffield is undefeated heavyweight sensation Hughie Lewis Fury and Morden’s former British champion and European title contender Lenny Daws, as well as a whole host of local talent.

TRAVIS DICKINSON CONFIDENT AND ON HIS “GAME” AHEAD OF HIS FIRST ENGLISH TITLE DEFENCE IN THE MAXINUTRITION KNOCKOUT SEMI-FINALS ON MAY 17

London (1 May) ‘Tasty’ Travis Dickinson is confident he has “everything” to beat ‘Magic’ Matty Clarkson in the MaxiNutrition Knockout semi-finals at Leeds Town Hall on May 17, live on Channel 5.

The newly crowned English light heavyweight champion, Dickinson, won his title with a knockout performance in the quarter-finals and “can’t wait” for the next round.

“It meant a lot to me to win the English title, it’s my first proper professional title and I won it in style,” Dickinson said.

“I can’t wait to get out there in the semi-final, obviously I know that Matty Clarkson is a good boxer, but I know I’m going to beat him.”

The 26-year-old Newcastle fighter, Dickinson, emphatically knocked out former European champion Danny McIntosh inside three rounds in their MaxiNutrition Knockout quarter-final contest, sending the Norwich man to the canvas three times in the process.

That win set up his semi-final showdown with Clarkson, who battled his way to a points decision against the tricky Sheffield fighter Lee Duncan in their respective quarter-final and Dickinson isn’t overlooking the determined and resilient Preston man.

“I was very satisfied with my performance, especially finishing the fight as early as I did,” Dickinson said.

“I knew that if I caught him I would have the power to stop him but to do it that early was even better.

“Matty had a bad night in the quarter-final against Lee Duncan and now people are telling me he’s not good, but that’s not the case – he’s going to come into this one and have a go for my title, so he’ll be training harder than ever.

“But I know I’ve got everything to beat him, so I’m on my game and I have no worries.

“The MaxiNutrition Knockout is a big competition and winning it would obviously mean the world to me.”

This fantastic night of championship boxing will also see Leeds fighter and newly crowned British light heavyweight champion Bob Ajisafe take on Swanley’s Southern Area champion Leon Senior in the second semi-final to decide who will compete for the first ever MaxiNutrition Knockout title.

The night will also feature a whole host of exciting talent on the undercard including former world heavyweight title contender (against Wladimir Klitschko) ‘Fast’ Eddie Chambers, Bradford’s former WBC world light welterweight champion Junior Witter, as well as Leeds fighter Damon Jones, Bradford’s Darren Tetley, Hull fighter Samir Mouneimne and Morecambe’s Isaac Lowe.

Mitchell to battle Maduma on Froch – Groves II card

Kevin Mitchell will battle Ghislain Maduma in a Lightweight title elimination bout on the May 31 Carl Froch – George Groves rematch undercard at Wembley Stadium in London according to Dan Rafael of espn.com.

“This fight carries huge risk but also huge rewards,” said promoter Eddie Hearn. “I strongly believe that Kevin can beat Vazquez but he has a massive test in Maduma first at Wembley. Maduma is technically very good and can punch with both hands, but Kevin has boxed four times in seven months and is ready to enter deep waters. It’s going to be a cracking fight.”

BATTLEGROUNDS MMA ANNOUNCES COMPETITORS FOR ONE-NIGHT, EIGHT-MAN TOURNAMENT IN TULSA, OKLA. ON JUNE 27

TULSA, OK (May 1, 2014) – BattleGrounds MMA (www.battlegroundsone.com), the upstart Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) promotion headed by Olympic wrestling legend Kenny Monday, announced today that it has signed the first six competitors for O.N.E., its highly-anticipated, one-night, eight-man welterweight (170 pounds) tournament that will award the winner a grand prize of $50,000 on Friday, June 27 at BOK Center in Tulsa, Okla.

Tickets for the event, which will feature eight professional bouts in addition to the single-elimination tournament, are priced from $65, and can be purchased online at www.bokcenter.com as well as at Arby’s Box Office at the BOK Center, all ticket outlets, or by calling 1-800-7-BOKCTR.

All-time great Dennis “Superman” Hallman (53-14-2, 1 NC) of Yelm, Wash. will lead the charge into the star-studded playoff and be joined by fellow submission ace Cody “AK Kid” McKenzie (15-4) of Spokane, Wash.; undefeated prospect and former NCAA National Wrestling Championship runner-up Chris Honeycutt (4-0) of Fresno, Calif.; battle-tested Luigi “The Italian Tank” Fioravanti (24-11) of St. Louis, Mo.; Urijah Faber protégé David “Bulletproof” Mitchell (14-4) of Lower Lake, Calif. and Josh “The Beast” Bryant (14-4) of Broken Arrow, Okla.

“We are excited to have assembled a group of incredibly talented and accomplished athletes for this landmark tournament,” said BattleGrounds MMA President and three-time U.S. Olympic wrestler Monday, who captured the gold medal in freestyle wrestling in 1988 and, before that, earned three-time All-American honors competing for Oklahoma State University .

“The one-night tournament,” continued Monday, “is truly the toughest test physically and mentally in all of combative sports, and BattleGrounds MMA is proud to bring this format back to life and usher in a new era of elite competition in the world’s fastest growing sport.”

The final two tournament participants as well as the remainder of the fight card will be announced soon. A lottery draw to determine the tournament’s matchups will be held after weigh-ins on Thursday, June 26.

Dennis “Superman” Hallman

Riding a three-fight win streak, the 38-year-old, 5-foot-10 Hallman has provided the MMA world with some truly memorable moments over the course of his decorated 18-year professional career that includes an astounding 41 of his 53 career victories by way of submission. Amongst those on his list of conquests are Karo Parisyan, Ben Saunders, John Makdessi and UFC Hall of Fame legend Matt Hughes, whom Hallman tapped out twice, in a combined 37 seconds.

Cody “AK Kid” McKenzie

After a run at both featherweight (145 pounds) and lightweight (155 pounds), the 6-foot, 26-year-old McKenzie will campaign at welterweight in an effort to make his biggest mark in the sport to date. The inventor of a modified guillotine choke dubbed “The McKenzietine,” the Alaskan-born Gracie Jiu-Jitsu stylist has utilized the submission hold to stop opponents in 11 of his 15 career victories. Only two other fighters, both of whom have more than 50 career bouts under their belts, have recorded more wins by way of guillotine choke than McKenzie.

Chris Honeycutt

Touted as “the most decorated and high-profile collegiate wrestler” to enter the fiercely competitive world of MMA by SB Nation’s MMAFighting.com, the 5-foot-10, 25-year-old Honeycutt finished as runner-up in the 2012 NCAA national wrestling championships while representing collegiate wrestling powerhouse Edinboro University, the alma mater of his mentor, Josh Koscheck. A fiercely competitive wrestler since his early adolescent years, Honeycutt elected to not wrestle for his school squad in eighth grade because of greater opportunities he received competing for three different independent, local squads that guaranteed him 50 matches in a span of four months.

Since making his pro MMA debut in Jan. 2013, Honeycutt has finished 3 of his 4 opponents inside of the first round of action.

Luigi “The Italian Tank” Fioravanti

Fioravanti, who was nicknamed by his boxing coach for his rugged, straightforward style of fighting, has made his mark in the sport over the course of dozens of wars and will look to extend his streak of back-to-back wins that he notched by way of first round submission (rear-naked choke) and third round TKO (retirement) of Edwin Aguilar and Joshua Thorpe, respectively. The 33-year-old, 5-foot-8 Fioravanti is a former Marine who was a part of Operation Iraqi Freedom in 2003.

David “Bulletproof” Mitchell

Another submission savvy scrapper, the 34-year-old, 5-foot-10 Mitchell scored a big victory for Faber’s Team Alpha Male in his last start, forcing 53-fight veteran Jaime Jara to tap out from a rear-naked choke in the first round (4:15) of their April 26th matchup in Sacramento, Calif. The win was Mitchell’s second straight.

Mitchell grew up in small-town Laytonville, Calif. where he was amongst just 25 students in his high school graduating class, but was nevertheless a victim of bullying at the hands of peers on the 500 acre ranch that he grew up on. He has since channeled the resulting anger and trauma from his childhood towards the cage as well as to an anti-bully crusade, “Knockout Bullying,” that sees him offering support and guidance to California youth who are being victimized by their classmates.

Josh “The Beast” Bryant

The 34-year-old Bryant enters the tournament as the local fan favorite and will look to turn around his recent career downslide in his BattleGrounds MMA debut. The 6-foot, 34-year-old, Bryant, trained by Chuck Liddell on The Ultimate Fighter, burst onto the Okla. fight scene in 2007, going on a perfect 10-0 run, with 6 of those victories coming by way of (T)KO or submission.

Outside of the cage, Bryant moonlights as a radio personality, co-hosting Tulsa’s top-rated Big Bad Morning Show on KMOD 97.5 FM rock music radio every Friday.

Doors at BOK Center open at 6 p.m. CST on June 27. The first preliminary bout will begin at 7:15 p.m.

Andre Ward loses contract dispute with Goossen

WardWins300
According to Dan Rafael of espn.com, world Super Middleweight champion Andre Ward lost his 2nd court battle to his promoter Dan Goossen in a contract dispute.

Ward’s contract with Goossen was declared valid until Nov. 8, 2016, according to Foster’s ruling.

“It’s now time to sit down with Andre and his advisers to put these legal disputes behind us and concentrate on getting Andre back to fighting consistently inside the ring,” Goossen said. “Andre and I have had success together and there’s no reason not to get back on track as a team to secure his status as the top fighter in the world behind Floyd Mayweather.”

On Wednesday night, Josh Dubin, Ward’s attorney, and James Prince, his manager, issued a statement on Ward’s behalf saying they planned to continue to fight to break the contract.

“We want to be crystal clear: the ‘legal issues’ that [Goossen] referred to are only just getting underway. It is only after a California judge or jury speaks that the legal issues will be resolved,” the statement said. “Today’s decision from the California State Athletic Commission was not unexpected. From the very start, we do not feel that the commission has been looking out for the best interests of Andre Ward, the very boxer they are supposed to protect. To the contrary, for some inexplicable reason, the CSAC has continually bent over backwards to try to accommodate a promoter who we feel is taking horrible advantage of Andre and his career. …

“This is not the end of Andre’s fight to stand up for what he knows is right, but rather the beginning. The CSAC decision has only strengthened his resolve.

“Andre’s lawsuit against Dan Goossen and his promotional company in California Superior Court is continuing to move forward. It has always been Andre’s steadfast belief, as well as ours, that the state court system, not the CSAC, is the proper venue for his dispute with Dan Goossen. It is Team Ward’s belief that the arbitration before the CSAC should not have proceeded while Andre’s lawsuit is pending, so we do not feel that the decision is ultimately going to be binding.”

Foster ruled the contract should be extended for 14 months, a clear Goossen win.

“Of course I’m pleased with the decision. It was the right result both morally and legally,” said attorney Bert Fields, who argued the case for Goossen. “Ward’s a great fighter, but it was Goossen who helped build his professional career and put him in position to command the really big bucks.”

Mayweather to get $32 Million Guarantee Maidana fight

Floyd Mayweather
According to Dan Rafael of espn.com, Floyd Mayweather will earn a a minimum of $32 Million for Saturday night’s fight with Marcos Maidana at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.

“It’s just a testament to what he brings to sports, not just boxing,” said Leonard Ellerbe, Mayweather’s close friend and chief executive of Mayweather Promotions. “He’s a terrific entertainer and he is the reason why this arena will be packed and why there will be a million-plus (buys on pay-per-view) — because it’s all about the Mayweather experience.”

Maidana’s official purse is a career-high $1.5 million, but he also will earn more. He will make additional money from Argentina television rights and also has a chance to earn additional money depending on how well the pay-per-view performs.

For the welterweight co-feature, former junior welterweight titlist Amir Khan’s official purse is $1.5 million and former welterweight titleholder Luis Collazo will make $350,000. The winner will be a top candidate to face Mayweather in the fall if he beats Maidana.

Former three-division titleholder Adrien Broner will earn $1.25 million and opponent Carlos Molina will make $150,000 for their junior welterweight bout.

In the opening fight on the pay-per-view, super middleweight prospect J’Leon Love will make $100,000 and Marco Antonio Periban will earn $35,000.

MAYWEATHER ADMITS HE’S THINKING OF CALLING TIME ON HIS STAR-STUDDED CAREER AHEAD OF BATTLE WITH KNOCKOUT KING MAIDANA LIVE ON BOXNATION

Floyd Mayweather
LONDON (May 1) – Boxing superstar Floyd Mayweather has contemplated calling it quits but says it is only legacy which is keeping him from throwing in the towel.

The pound-for-pound ace has admitted he is in two minds about whether he wants to continue boxing, with the allure of adding to his already glittering résumé preventing him from bringing the curtain down on an 18-year career.

The 37-year-old takes on Argentine knockout artist Marcos Maidana in Las Vegas this Saturday night, live and exclusive on BoxNation, but Mayweather admits his affluent lifestyle is making it harder to motivate himself.

“I’m contemplating everyday getting out the sport now,” said Mayweather. “I’m very, very comfortable. It’s not really hard for me to get up when I get to the boxing gym, it’s just getting to the gym. I go into my garages and think, do I want to drive you, you, you or you.

“[But my motivation] is fighting for legacy because when you mention boxing all I want you to mention is Floyd Mayweather. That’s what I’m here to do. When my career is over I don’t want you talking about nobody else,” he said.

The 10-time world champion, in five different weight divisions, goes up against Maidana at the famous MGM Grand, home to some of boxing’s biggest nights.

Mayweather has become a permanent resident at the iconic Las Vegas hotel and casino, fighting there since 2007, with the MGM keen to make their multimillion-dollar superstar feel right at home.

“This hotel [MGM Grand] has given me everything I’ve asked for and even more. They bought me a $1.6m Bugatti the first day my fight sold out. They bought me a $400,000 watch the day of the Pacquiao-Bradley fight,” said Mayweather.

“The Rolex that they bought me only ten have been made around the world, and there’s only four in the US. I was looking at that watch for 3 years and contemplating ‘should I buy it or not’.

“The MGM Grand stepped right up to the plate and said ‘Floyd whatever you want, we want you comfortable and to treat you like you’re family’. It was a Rolex Submariner watch with emeralds,” he said.

Such a flashy and extravagant way of life doesn’t come without sacrifice, with the rugged and hardened Maidana looking to be the first man to hand the marvelous Mayweather his first defeat.

The Michigan born star is not taking the man who decimated Adrien Broner last December lightly, believing that he could be the first fighter to really test him.

“I want this guy to bring his best because he could actually be the first guy that makes me dig into my bag of tricks and bring out my A-game,” said Mayweather.

“So hopefully he makes me pull out my A-game because my whole career I’ve only had to use a D and C-game to beat every guy. I’ve never had to use an A-game or B-game so we’ll just have to see.

“It’s not just the Broner fight [that got my attention]. I’m judging him off his last four fights, he’s done a superb job and that’s the guy we chose. He’s got an 80% knockout ratio so I can’t sleep on this guy,” he said.

Mayweather is looking to dazzle this weekend, on a show which will see the WBA and WBC welterweight world titles up for grabs.

“I want to look impressive when I go out there on Saturday. I want to put on a good show. I’m not looking for this fight to go the distance, so if Maidana is talking about a knockout, and if I’m looking at the fight not going the distance, you’re going to get a hell of a fight on Saturday I can guarantee you that,” he said.

The show will see former unified light-welterweight world champion Amir Khan face off against the skilled Luis Collazo as the chief-support, with Broner making his ring return when he steps in with Mexican-American Carlos Molina.

Mayweather vs. Maidana is live on BoxNation (Sky 437/490HD & Virgin 546) this Saturday midnight. Visit www.boxnation.com to subscribe.
