DIBELLA ENTERTAINMENT AND JEAN PASCAL PROMOTIONS JOIN FORCES SIGN HIGHLY REGARDED UNDEFEATED PROSPECT JOEL DIAZ TO EXCLUSIVE CO-PROMOTIONAL AGREEMENT DIAZ TO MAKE PROMOTIONAL DEBUT ON UPCOMING SHOBOX CARD MAY 16TH AT FOXWOODS RESORT AND CASINO

New York, NY (4/29/14) – DiBella Entertainment and Jean Pascal Promotions have announced that they will be joining promotional forces, beginning with the exclusive signing of highly regarded super featherweight Joel Diaz Jr. (15-0, 12KO’s). Diaz Jr. had received offers from every major promotional outfit in boxing, but decided that DBE and Jean Pascal were the best fit. Diaz is set to make his much anticipated co-promotional debut when he headlines the upcoming May 16th ShoBox: The New Generation card at the Foxwoods Resort and Casino in Connecticut.

“I am thrilled to be signing with DBE and Jean Pascal Promotions. This is where I belong and this is the promotional team that will get me the opportunities that I want and need in my career. I couldn’t be happier to be joining their stables and I’m looking forward to becoming their next world champion,” said Diaz Jr.

“I am excited to be working with Joel Diaz Jr., who I consider to be one of the brightest young stars in all of boxing. This collaboration with Jean Pascal Promotions will increase Joel’s exposure and allow him to be promoted in an unprecedented way throughout all of North America,” said Lou DiBella.

“I have been a big fan of Joel Diaz Jr. ever since I saw him fight Guy Robb. The way he responded to adversity in that fight at just 19 years old really showed me something. I’m extremely proud that he is the first fighter to sign with Jean Pascal Promotions. I look forward to working with DiBella Entertainment on this international co-promotion and expect this to be the first of many deals that our two companies make,” said Jean Pascal.

“It was a pleasure to negotiate this deal with DiBella Entertainment, Joel and his manager Mike Criscio. Jean Pascal Promotions would like to thank Gordon Hall, Stephen Espinoza and everyone at Showtime for giving Joel Diaz Jr. another ShoBox date. We at Jean Pascal Promotions have no doubt that Joel will be graduating toward Championship Boxing dates and world title opportunities in the near future and are expecting a historical run to commence on May 16 at Foxwoods,” said Greg Leon, CEO of Jean Pascal Promotions.

“Joel Diaz Jr. is one of the best young fighters in the world. He is now starting to come into his own and I expect him to be a world champion by the end of next year. I would like to thank DiBella Entertainment, Jean Pascal Promotions and Greg Leon for making this deal possible. We feel very comfortable working with everyone, now it’s time to bring Joel Diaz Jr. to the next level,” said manager Mike Criscio.

Diaz is set to take on once-beaten prospect Tyler Asselstine in the 10-round main event live on SHOWTIME® (10 p.m. ET/PT, delayed on the West Coast) on May 16 at the beautiful Foxwoods Resort and Casino in Mashantucket, CT.

Here are the main quotes from today’s final press conference ahead of the fight between WBO Super-Middleweight World Champion Arthur Abraham (39-4, 28 KOs) and Nikola Sjekloca (26-1, 8 KOs) this Saturday at the Velodrom Berlin, Germany, which will host its first ever world title fight.

Arthur Abraham: “I am looking forward to defend the WBO Belt at home, in my town. It is great to return to the ring inside a span of two months and I want to fight two more times after this one in 2014. Before calling it a career, sitting on the couch and watching TV at age 40, I want to meet Felix Sturm at Berlin’s Olympic Stadium – that’s what I am dreaming of.”

Nikola Sjekloca: “I am thankful, finally getting the chance to fight for a world title after being rated highly in the pro ranks for such a long time. I lost to Bika but learned from my mistakes. I will show on May 3 that it was worth the wait and the experience, becoming Montenegro’s first world champion.”

“THE MOMENT: MAYWEATHER VS. MAIDANA” SHOWTIME PPV® FEATURED FIGHTERS QUOTES

mayweather
FLOYD “MONEY” MAYWEATHER, 10-Time Five-Division World Champion & WBC Welterweight World Champion

“On May 3, I’ve got to go out there and take my time, keep my composure and be me. Everybody thinks he’s just going to be a pushover, but I don’t think so. That’s why I’m training hard and I’m pushing myself to the limit every day.

“I know Maidana is going to come and bring his best, so I know that I cannot overlook him. I’m in training every day and dedicating myself.

“I think Maidana is more confident now than he was when he faced the kid from St. Louis, Devon Alexander. I think he’s more confident now, so I think he’s more ready and tough. If you have more confidence it’s going to make you fight harder.

“Of course I want my name to go down in history as the best, but also making smart business moves to be very lucrative and build your portfolio is important.

“I’ve been in so many career-defining fights I can’t really choose one particular that defines my legacy, but all of them played a major role.

“We must realize that I am the bigger guy even though I walk around at 150. I go no higher than 152. I’m naturally the bigger guy because I’ve been at 147 almost 10 years now, so I’m naturally the bigger guy.

“I can feel when a guy’s gonna punch. I can feel it. I don’t even have to see it; I can feel it.

“Maidana punches extremely hard if he has an 80 percent knockout ratio. That’s obviously his best attribute, but a lot of times when a guy’s swinging a lot of big shots and they’re not landing, you get fatigued like that.

“I haven’t been hit by Maidana yet, so I can’t really say if he’s the hardest puncher I’ve faced. I may be the hardest puncher he ever fought. He hasn’t been hit by me yet, so we’ll just have to see if he’s the hardest puncher.

“Boxing is always very, very important to me and always will be because this has put me in a position to have everything that I have. I want to help this sport live on. I want to help this sport continue to grow. That’s what it’s about.

“I think that I don’t get my credit that’s due because I think that I make A-level and B-level fighters look ordinary, but that comes from just having a sharp mind and just really pushing myself in training

“When I was young I always loved to entertain, I always loved to promote. We’ve done house parties when we were young teenagers, 13, 14. I know how to promote and make sure the party was packed, so promotion has always been something I am good at.

“It’s about being a smart. I don’t go into a fight thinking about losing. It’s about winning at life. The most important thing is winning at life.

“Before I became a champion, I worked hard. Now that I am a champion, each fight I have to work harder and harder to stay in this position.”

MARCOS “EL CHINO” MAIDANA, WBA Welterweight World Champion

“I’m very happy to be part of this event. I have prepared myself for the best part of my career.

“I’m going to go out to win it. Others haven’t been able to do it, I’m training to do it. I’m training to be the first one to do it.

“All I’ve got to say for people doubting me is to order the fight because they’re going to enjoy a good fight. They’re going to see me beat Floyd Mayweather.

“I feel better now that I’ve been working with Robert Garcia. I feel much better. My punches are connecting even stronger now because the punches are being thrown in a better location and with precision.

“I’m fighting and beating great fighters, most of them have the same style, very similar style and defensive, but I already beat Broner the way I did and I think I can do the same with Mayweather, but until I’m in the ring we’ll look for things that no one has seen.

“With Broner, everybody thought I had to knock him out and I beat him with a decision. I am preparing myself to go 12 rounds if it’s necessary. I’m preparing to hurt him every time I throw punches and if a knockout comes, then great, but I am preparing myself to win after 12 rounds.

“This is the most important part of my career. The fight with Broner gave me a lot of exposure, but this fight itself is the biggest fight of my career and it would be a tremendous upset and that’s what I’m training for, to upset the world and to do it for my country. It would be huge for my country.”

AMIR “KING” KHAN, Former Unified Super Lightweight World Champion

“I’m looking forward to the big fight against Luis Collazo. It’s my first fight at 147. I’m excited, I really believe that I belong in the welterweight division; it’s going to be my division for my future career.

“I really believe we can steal the show, and that’s all we want to do. Whenever I fight I want to give it 100 percent. I want to give the fans what they want to watch, and I really believe that this fight could be the one that could steal the show on the night.

“We’ve been working on just being patient, being smart, using the feet and the hands at the right time, using the defense and the offense at the right time, and my trainer Virgil Hunter has been changing me up. He’s making me understand the sport of boxing.

“This is a tough sport when you go into the ring with the likes of these tough guys like Collazo, and the fighters that you’re going to be facing, you have to be 100 percent ready. So I really believe I’ll be a better fighter at 147, I’ll be stronger, and I’ll keep a lot of my energy and strength and power in the shots.

“You’ll definitely see a different Amir Khan coming into this fight because I’ve had a lot of time to work on things, and work on new strategies, and also work with my trainers, Virgil Hunter and also my strength conditioner, Tony Brady. So, I know I’m going to be ready in this division, and I can’t wait to step in the ring.

“Collazo’s a one-of-a-kind fighter. He has his own style. I respect the way he fights and he always causes big problems to his opponents, and he does really well in the ring. I’m not going to compare him to any opponent I’ve faced before.

“Physically I think I’m a better fighter, and like I said, moving up to the next weight category is only going to make me a better fighter. We don’t want to go in and take easy fights, we want to fight the best out there, and it shows that Luis Collazo is one of the best out there by knocking out Victor Ortiz in his last fight, and proving himself.

“I really believe that I needed a long break off, and taking that time off sometimes makes you metaphysically and mentally a better fighter. I expect time will tell; we’ll see how much I’ve become a better fighter on the night of the fight.

“[On Collazo’s knockout of Victor Ortiz] It shows that he’s got power, he’s got speed, he’s got great movement. This is going to be a good fight, it’s going to be a tough fight. We’re going to be up against a tough Collazo; even the fights he’s lost, Collazo’s been very, very close.

“It’s all about putting a great performance on, putting a great fight on and giving the crowd what they want. The fans want to see a good fight, the fans want to see an exciting fight, and I think us two, the two styles we have will make this fight very exciting, and very good to watch.”

LUIS COLLAZO, WBA International Welterweight Champion

“This is a fight that could take me to another level in the welterweight division, and I’m just very humbled by the opportunity. May 3 is going to be a great night of boxing.

“Khan’s got great speed, but I think he might be a little bit slower than Andre Berto was, and that was a big fight for me. Come fight night we’ll definitely see if his speed is going to be a factor or not.

“If he takes me lightly, more power to him. But come fight night I’m just going to try to capitalize on all his mistakes. That’s my main thing, and I’m just working my butt off. I’m working hard to give all fans what they want, a great and exciting show.

“Sometimes all fighters are vulnerable. We all make mistakes. We’re not perfect, but that’s why different styles make beautiful fights and I’m just going to try to capitalize to the best of my ability.

“Khan is a great fighter, he’s been on top of the game quite some time now, and to be able to get this fight, it’s great. This is just getting me closer to where I really want to be, at the top of the welterweight division.

“I’ve been the underdog all my life, all my fights I was the one trying, the next fighter to step up. He’s coming to the welterweight division. I’m more than happy to welcome him to this weight class.

“You’ve got to go in there to take care of business, and you’ve got to be careful with how you’re taking shots. If you know you’re taking shots and the refs think you’re hurt, keep it moving, don’t stay there and keep getting those shots, and just be smart. I learned a lot from my previous fights and I’m just grateful for all the experiences that I have.

“From the Ricky Hatton fight I learned that anything could happen. And from the Victor Ortiz fight, I learned don’t leave it to the judges. I learned a lot and I’m just very excited and humbled by this opportunity. And come May 3 I’m just going to keep giving the boxing fans what they want, some more excitement.”

ADRIEN “THE PROBLEM” BRONER, Former Three-Division World Champion

“At the end of the day, everybody is looking for Adrien Broner to be this new humble guy. Well, if you’re looking for Adrien Broner to be this new humble guy, you won’t get it. I’m still the same fresh, flashy, young, rich and famous guy. I’m a young man, and I respect every fighter, but I’m ready to fight.

“Molina is a hell of a fighter. Like I said, I don’t disrespect any boxer. It takes a lot to get inside that square circle and I don’t take any boxer lightly. I just want him to be on his A-game May 3.

“Anybody taking a loss that I did, it would probably break them. But coming from where I come from, I’m strong mentally and physically so I’m OK. I’m personally proud of myself and I don’t care that a lot of people are looking for me to just go in here and walk over this guy, but at the end of the day they’re forgetting that he’s not just somebody to walk over, he’s a top-class fighter.

“After this fight they will see that I’m still ‘The Problem.’ Anybody can get it in the ring. I’m still the same guy.

“I know there’s a lot of people that dislike the things that I do, but there’s a lot of people that love the things that I do and they want to see Adrien Broner back on top and I will not disappoint them and anybody who wants to see me.”

CARLOS MOLINA, Junior Welterweight Contender

“We’re working hard for this fight. We’re very humbled to get this opportunity to fight on the big fight, on a Mayweather undercard, against Adrien Broner. We’re excited and we’ll be ready come May 3.

“I know the whole world is seeing me as an underdog, but that just motivates me even more. I think I’ve got a lot to prove in this fight. I’m coming off a loss with Amir Khan, so I’m going to go in there and I’m going to give it my all come May 3rd. I’ve been working extremely hard for this fight.

“I’m just going to continue to work hard and give you guys a great show come May 3. I know what’s on the line. I’m fighting a world-class fighter, so I’m going to give it my all.

“He’s a three-time world champion. He’s the one that’s supposed to put on a show, so I’m right here, just working hard and getting ready for May 3.”

J’LEON LOVE, Undefeated Super Middleweight Contender

“Periban is a tough fighter. I know he’s going to come with his A-game. I’m definitely going to come with my A-game, and that’s what’s makes fights right there.

“I’ve been training extremely hard. I’m definitely focused. It really comes down to May 3. I’m going to put my heart and all my determination into this fight.

“His talent is respected, but we’re definitely going to come in there and give it our all and make sure we come out victorious. I know that he’s trying to make history for his country. I’m trying to make history for my family and me and do what I have to do to win this fight.

“I am young. I’m still learning. I’m definitely there mentally and physically. We made the right decisions for our career and I have the best team behind me.

“I have a job to do and my job is to be in the best shape possible, be mentally focused and physically focused for these fights and this is a big opportunity. I’m making a name for myself, from small time Eastern Michigan; I’m putting all that on the map
and this is what I’ve dreamed of since I was a kid.

“With Periban, he has a great skill set. He’s tough, strong, he’s tall and he’s a rangy fighter. He has a lot of skill and he has a good jab. Anything can happen in this fight and you can’t look past anybody and a guy like him. He can upset a lot of people.

“I’m just being myself. I don’t want to be like Adrien Broner or Floyd Mayweather. I want to be like J’Leon Love. I’m just a cool guy. I’m laid back. I’m silly at times. That’s just me. I’m not angry. I’m blessed. I’m just happy to be alive. I’m healthy and these opportunities are coming and I’m happy for it.”

MARCOS ANTONIO PERIBAN, NABF Super Middleweight Champion

“I understand that Mr. Love is in the way of me capturing my dream of fighting for the world championship. It’s very important for me to become world cChampion because by doing so I will be the first Mexican in history at 168 pounds to ever hold the championship for the WBC.

“It’s a fight that I must take the opportunity and be successful in and I can’t let Mr. Love beat me because basically it derails my opportunity to become world champion and to make history for Mexico.”

“I’m very focused. I want that title. I want that title for Mexico, so you can expect a very focused and determined fighter on May 3..

“Love is a very dangerous fighter and he has a lot of technical skills to him, so basically my training is no longer focused on my strength, but basically on the tactics that I’m going to use to fight Love.”

Randall Bailey making one last title run Takes on undefeated Frederick Lawson

Randall_Bailey
MIAMI (April 29, 2014) – Three-time, two-division world champion Randall “KO King” Bailey (44-8, 37 KOs) continues his final title run June 7, as he takes on undefeated Ghanaian welterweight Frederick Lawson (22-0, 20 KOs) in the 12-round main event for the vacant United States Boxing Association (USBA) title, at Myth Event Center in St. Paul, Minnesota.

Bailey, fighting out of Miami, is coming off a win by way of an eighth-round disqualification of Humberto “Bam Bam” Toledo (41-11-2, 25 KOs) last November in Tampa. The 39-year-old Bailey, still one of the most feared punchers in boxing, is the former International Boxing Federation (IBF) welterweight title holder, as well as the former IBF and World Boxing Organization (WBO) light welterweight champion of the world.

“I’m happy to have this fight,” Bailey said. “I’m looking forward to fighting in Minnesota again. I fought there in 1998 (WTKO3 vs. Rodney Wilson in Minneapolis). Now, each fight is my most important for me, and it’s also very important for me to look good winning. This is my last real run and it would be great to get another world title shot. I still feel young. I’ve never had any real injuries or damage to my body. And power never goes away!

“I’ll have Chico Rivas as my head trainer for the second fight in row. We’ve worked together since 2005. He’s my go-to guy; a safety first type of trainer to make sure his fighters are okay, but when it’s time to attack, he lets me go. He’s all about basics, no magic tricks. We get along very well.”

IBF No. 14-rated Lawson, fighting out of Chicago, is the IBF International 147-pound champion. His last fight was a sixth-round technical knockout victory this past March over Mohammed Kayongo (17-3-1) at The Myth.

“I don’t know too much about him (Lawson) yet other than he is undefeated and was Manny Pacquiao’s sparring partner. I’m ready for a good fight. I want to build myself back up in the eyes of the public after my fight with Devin (Alexander – LDEC12). His style didn’t match with mine. I know I came to fight but all he did was tap and run. He should have told me that before we signed to fight instead of him saying he was going to break my ribs and knock me out. His punched like he was scratching. I’m disgusted with that fight. All I felt was his little taps. I’m still frustrated. Being a veteran I should have come in and did everything possible to win. I like to fight; if I lose, I’d rather get my ass beaten instead of losing that way with him tapping and running.”

Lawson figures to stand and fight having stopped 20 of his 22 opponents to date, although none have been in the same class as Bailey.

Bailey’s veteran manager, Si Stern, believes his fighter has one legitimate run still in him. “A good win will put Randall back in the mix for another world title fight,” Stern commented. “This is a great opportunity for Randall. His mind set is good and nobody, pound-for-pound, hits harder than him. If Randall hits this guy clean, the fight is over. His opponent has never fought anybody like Randall.”

During the course of his 18-year professional boxing career, Bailey has defeated, among the more notables, Rocky Martinez, Hector Lopez, Carlos Gonzalez, Mike Jones, Jackson Osei Bonsu, Francisco Figueroa, DeMarcus Corley, Anthony Mora, Harrison Cuello, Juan Polo Perez, and Demetrio Ceballos. Seven of Bailey’s eight losses have been to world champions Miguel Cotto, Alexander, Juan Urango, Corley, Diosbelys Hurtado, Ener Julio, and Ishe Smith, the other setback to two-time world title challenger Herman Ngoudjo.

Abdul Kabbani Aims Even Higher at May Day Mayhem

Dubai, April 28, 2014, Syrian Brawler Abdul Kabbani (3-2) must be either completely insane or just about the bravest boxer on the face of the planet. Kabbani, a heavyweight boxer living in Dubai has decided to challenge and take on Fatih Ulusoy (Debut), the very man that mauled and TKO’ed in one round UAE Lion Heart Boxing Productions’ own and UAE 2012 Fighter of the Year Mohammad Ali Bayat (4-0). Bayat has beaten Kabbani twice. Despite this reality, Kabbani wants to fight Bayat’s conqueror Ulusoy as part of the May Day Mayhem boxing extravaganza scheduled for May 1, 2014 at the Emirates Golf Club in Dubai by Lion Heart Boxing Productions.

Dubai resident and boxing debutante Fatih “The Ottoman” Ulusoy (Debut) is an accomplished MMA fighter and kickboxer as well as a two-time DIFC Champion. While Fatih Ulusoy has had one boxing fight in his career, it is the stuff of legend–the first round destruction of cruiserweight prospect Mohammad Ali Bayat on March 7, 2014. Ulusoy’s win over Bayat is not on Fatih’s official boxing record as the fight was not properly sanctioned by the organizer. However, everyone in the UAE was shocked by the result. Says Fatih, “The Bayat fight may not be on my record but everyone in Dubai knows that I beat him easily. I jumped on him and knocked him out in less than one minute. So I don’t understand why Kabbani wants to fight me since Bayat beat him twice.”

Kabanni is supremely confident even though he has lost to Bayat. On December 19, 2013 and at another Lion Heart Boxing Productions Thursday Night Fights event, the Bayat-Kabbani rivalry reached what people all thought was its logical conclusion when Kabbani fought Bayat for UAE bragging rights on Thursday Night Fights @ Yas Island and came short again. The fight was exciting and did not disappoint. The brave warriors went at it for four grueling rounds and the fight could have gone wither way. However, just as it was in the first fight between Kabbani and Bayat (an unsanctioned fighter not on either fighter’s record), Kabbani came up short. Kabbani’s extant coach and corner, Anthony Chill, stopped the fight by throwing a towel at the end of the fourth round of a scheduled six rounder.

Kabbani does not dispute the outcome or offer an excuse for his second loss to Bayat. However, people, including Kabbani, could not help but wonder what would have happened if Kabbani was in better shape and went the whole distance in both Bayat losses. Kabbani sees a win against Ulusoy as the vindication he needs to both redeem himself and reestablish his reputation as the bad boy of UAE boxing. Most importantly, Kabbani hopes that a win against Ulusoy would earn him a third shot at Bayat. But first, Kabanni must take on and beat Ulusoy, a seemingly impossible task.

Boxing fans in the UAE are salivating at the matchup. Says, Lion Boxing Productions CFO, Edward Mendy, “This may very well be the fight of the night. At first blush, I didn’t think it was smart of Kabbani to take this fight considering the fact that Ulusoy handily beat Bayat, a fighter who has defeated Kabbani twice. Looking at it closer, however, I really like Kabbani’s chances. Ulusoy will not have the weight advantage that he had on Bayat. More importantly, Kabbani has a point to prove, is the more seasoned boxer and his style is dynamic. Kabbani’s head movement is one of the best I have seen. Thus, it should not be that easy for Ulusoy to jump him as he did Bayat. If Kabbani is in shape, Ulusoy may be in for a rude awakening event though Ulusoy handiliy beat our star fighter Bayat. I love watching Kabbani fight. He has amazing grit, an intoxicating style and the liveliest of personalities.”

Kabbani v. Ulusoy is one of eight or more exciting professional boxing bouts that will be featured at May Day Mayhem, a version of the acclaimed Thursday Night Fights series that will be held on Thursday, May 1, 2014 at the 5,000-capacity Emirates Golf Club Lawns, in Dubai. May Day Mayhem is promoted by Lion Heart Boxing Promotions, Ltd., and is the Dubai encore and follow-up to its successful promotion of the first-ever live professional boxing event in Abu Dhabi history, Thursday Night Fights @ Yas Island. May Day Mayhem will feature former IBF Heavyweight Champion and multiple-time Heavyweight Contender Francois “The White Buffalo” Botha (48-11) in the main event as well as an undercard with boxers from the international scene and local superstars.

Tickets are reasonably priced: VIP Table of Ten with F&B, AED10,000; VIP Ringside, AED500; Ringside, AED400; Premium Seating, AED300; General Admission Seated, AED150; and General Admission Standing, also AED150. Tickets are being sold by all major ticket sellers in the UAE: List Platinum, all Ticketmaster locations, Timeout Tickets, TixBox and all Virgin MENA Megastores.

The event will be televised live in the UAE and MENA Regions by Dubai Sports.

Roberto Garcia Ready to Continue Surprising Career Resurgence This Thursday Against Victor Cayo

Roberto “La Amenaza” Garcia (34-3, 22 KOs) of Weslaco, Texas, says he’s as ready as he can possibly be for this Thursday’s (May 1, 2014) ESPN Thursday Night Fights-televised 10-round welterweight showdown with Victor “Mermelada” Cayo (32-4, 23 KOs) of Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic.

Garcia and Cayo will meet in the main event of Warriors Boxing’s “Noche de Combates” at the world-famous Hialeah Park in South Florida.

In the 10-round middleweight co-feature, undefeated Jonathan “Mantequilla” González (17-0-1, 14 KOs) of San Juan, Puerto Rico, will face Sonora, Mexico’s Rogelio “Porky” Medina (32-5, 26 KOs).

Tickets for “Noche de Combates,” are priced at $20, $35, $50 and $100 and are on sale now. They can be purchased at ticketforce.com, as well as hialeahpark.com, and also at the Hialeah Park Racing & Casino box office. For more information, call the special Boxing Hotline at 786-483-7444.

Garcia is something of a Cinderella story in the making. Never having reached his potential throughout his 13-year boxing career, he was thrust into an ESPN-televised main event on a few days’ notice against Mexico’s Norberto Gonzalez last February and scored an impressive decision victory.

That showing has led him to the Cayo fight, which, if he’s victorious, could lead to the high-profile fight he’s been dreaming of through years of inactivity and frustration.

How did you preparations for this fight go?
Training was good. I did my job. I did the right things that I’m supposed to do to get in shape and everything was right. I have no excuses. I’m ready. I’m motivated and positive because I did my job. I fight hard for my family because I want to keep putting food on my table. I have a wife and a daughter and another one on the way. My wife is two months pregnant.

Have you watched any tape of Cayo? What do you think of him as a fighter?
To be honest, I stopped doing that a long time ago. The ones that do that are my trainers, my advisors and my brothers. Even the last fight, I probably only saw a minute or two of the guy. I don’t believe in that. Video is over-rated because you never know who you will face that day, not everybody stays the same for every fight. I train hard and I train smart and I listen to my corner and fight my ass off and that’s it. My coaches press the buttons and I just go out and do it. I just know he’s a very good fighter. Only lost to world-class fighters and that’s it. We have pretty much dead-even record. It’s a very good main event, a good competitive fight. I’ve been working with bigger, taller, faster guys in the gym to get ready. Speed is something I’m not used to. I put a lot of pressure on guys and that’s the way I fight. I fight hard and go all the way and go deep.

It must feel good to be having something of a career resurgence. Tell me how it feels to be in this nationally televised fight with even bigger fights possibly at stake.
I’m very grateful to be able to get these opportunities. There were dry spells in my career and I held on and didn’t get down on myself. I stayed strong and kept busy and stayed in the gym. We bit the bullet in the last fight, took a risk on a few days’ notice and doing that got us to this opportunity.

If you lose this fight, will it be the end of your career?
I see every fight as my last fight, but I don’t know. I never plan that far ahead. I really am taking every day one at a time. I live in the moment. But I’ll try my best. I’m grateful to still be going strong at 34 years young. I feel good because I’m not even supposed to be here.

You’re dropping down in weight for this fight. Was it difficult to do?
I’ve had no problems dropping down. My last four fights, working with my new trainer, Roberto Norris, I’ve been getting lighter and lighter. He’s always told me I’m a welterweight. It’s not that I’m coming back down. I’ve been fighting heavy. I was taking short notice fights above my weight class to stay in the mix. In shape I’m a welterweight, but I didn’t always have time to get ready. I’ve been trying to get a fight at welterweight for years.

How did you connect with your new trainer, Roberto Norris?
I had nothing going on. I had no trainer. I was just working out on my own. I decided to give him a try, so I met with him and told him I haven’t fought in a year, but I believe in god and I’ll work hard and give everything I got. I really like how he trains me and he likes my work ethic and now here we are going on our fourth fight together.

TYSON FURY BACKING HIS MAN KID GALAHAD

London (28 April) Tyson Fury believes Qatar-born Sheffield star Kid Galahad is “ready for anyone” in the super bantamweight division.

Ahead of Galahad’s clash against Australian champion Fred ‘The General’ Mundraby for the vacant Commonwealth title on May 10 at Ponds Forge Arena, Sheffield, live on Channel 5, the undefeated 6’9” heavyweight sensation, Tyson, took time out of his training to back the rising superstar.

“He’s my man Kid Galahad, I’ve backed him from the beginning,” Tyson said.

“He’s the unbeaten former WBC International, British and European champion and I’m sure that on May 10th he’ll become the Commonwealth super bantamweight champion as well.”

The unbeaten Galahad (real name Abdul Barry Awad), 24, is on the brink of a world title opportunity and recently called out Bury’s WBA world champion Scott Quigg to meet him in a huge domestic showdown later in the year and the unbeaten former British, Commonwealth and Irish heavyweight champion, Tyson, 25, believes Barry has what it takes to go all the way.

“He can’t do anymore than he’s doing and I think if he fights Scott Quigg he beats him,” Tyson said.

“Quigg’s a come forward fighter and Barry’s a good boxer and a good boxer always beats a come forward fighter.

“I think Galahad is ready for anyone – Frampton, Quigg, lets get it on!!”

Also scheduled to fight in Sheffield is undefeated heavyweight sensation Hughie Lewis Fury as well as a whole host of local talent on the bill, including Sheffield’s Dave Howe, Callum Hancock, Tom Mcassey and Ryan Hardy, Barnsley’s Lee Noble, Rotherham’s Karl Bell, Chatteris fighter Jordan Gill and Morden’s former British champion and European title contender Lenny Daws.

Tyson is preparing for his domestic superfight with former world title contender Dereck Chisora at the Phones 4U Arena Manchester on July 26th, as he goes in search of the European title and a shot at the reigning IBF, IBO, WBA and WBO champion Wladimir Klitschko.

DIBELLA ENTERTAINMENT ANNOUNCES SHOBOX: THE NEW GENEREATION DOUBLEHEADER

dbe_logo
New York (April 28, 2014) – On Friday May 16, DiBella Entertainment (DBE), in association with Jean Pascal Promotions, will return to the beautiful Foxwoods Resort Casino in Mashantucket, Conn., with an exciting ShoBox: The New Generation doubleheader live on SHOWTIME® (10 p.m. ET/PT, delayed on the West Coast).

Headlining the card in the 10-round main event will be highly regarded undefeated super featherweight prospect Joel Diaz Jr. (15-0, 12KO’s) taking on once-beaten Tyler Asselstine (14-1, 7KO’s).

Returning to ShoBox for the second time in 2014, red-hot prospect Frank Galarza (13-0-2, 9KO’s) will take on fellow undefeated prospect Sebastien Bouchard (9-0, 2KO’s) in the co-feature. Galarza-Bouchard is scheduled for eight rounds in the junior middleweight division.

“We are very excited to be returning to Foxwoods, which is truly one of our favorite venues for boxing. We staged a tremendous card on Showtime in January and we are looking to follow that up with another action-packed card from top to bottom on May 16,” said promoter Lou DiBella.

“We look forward to hosting this event and working, once again, with Lou DiBella and SHOWTIME,” stated Foxwoods President and CEO, Scott Butera. “We are continuing with our commitment to be the premier venue in the Northeast for top sporting events and this outstanding night of boxing is helping us to deliver on that objective.”

The 21-year-old Diaz Jr. just recently signed an exclusive promotional contact with DBE and successfully made his promotional debut in March with unanimous six-round decision over Jose Beranza. Diaz Jr. comes from a family rich in boxing history. His father is renowned boxing trainer and former contender Joel Diaz Sr. He is also the nephew to former titlists Antonio and Julio Diaz. A standout amateur before turning pro in 2010, Diaz Jr. has continued to impress with each outing. Eight of Diaz’ 12 career knockouts have come in two rounds or less, with six coming in the very first round. Diaz is looking to begin moving himself up the lightweight world ratings and put his name among the elite of the division, but he must first get by his toughest opponent to date in Asselstine.

A former amateur standout for his native country of Canada, Asselstine fought for the Canadian national team and won the 2010 Ringside World Championships before turning pro later that same year. Asselstine ran his record to a perfect 12-0 before dropping a 10-round majority decision to fellow undefeated prospect Baha Laham in February of last year in a bout that was nationally televised on ESPN’s “Friday Night Fights”. Asselstine bounced back nicely though, winning his next two bouts in 2013 and picking up momentum going into the bout on May 16. Asselstine is eager to prove his worth and knows that a victory over the highly regarded Diaz Jr. will put him right back into the mix of the talent-laden 130lb. division.

Back on January 17, Galarza made his ShoBox and national TV debut and absolutely stole the show that evening. Galarza scored a devastating highlight-reel knockout over previously undefeated and highly regarded John Thompson in the second round of their scheduled eight-rounder. The stoppage victory over Thompson was the second consecutive stoppage victory over a previously undefeated opponent for the Brooklyn-native and former NY Golden Gloves champion whose last five victories have all come by way of stoppage. Another impressive performance by Galarza will surely put the 154lb. division on notice that he is truly a force to be reckoned with.

The former two-time Canadian amateur champion Bouchard has quickly become one of the more popular up-and-coming boxers in his native Quebec. The 26-year-old will be making both his US and national TV debut when he takes on the red-hot Galarza.

Tickets are priced at $125, $85 and $45 may be purchased online at foxwoods.com by calling the Foxwoods’ box office at 800-200-2882, or in person at the Foxwoods box office. Tickets may also be purchased through any Ticketmaster outlet or online at Ticketmaster.com

Steve Farhood, Barry Tompkins and former World Champion Raul Marquez will call the action on SHOWTIME. The executive producer is Gordon Hall with Richard Gaughan producing and Rick Phillips directing.

Pacquiao discussing 5-fight extension with Top Rank

Pacquiao_Bradley_140412_001a
Superstar Manny Pacquiao is in talks about a 5-fight extension with his promoter, Top Rank according to Dan Rafael of espn.com.

“Yes, we are talking about the extension,” Top Rank’s Bob Arum told ESPN.com. “We are working it out. We are talking about a lot of things. How many fights would be in Macau, how many would be in the United States, how many in other places. But we are talking about five fights.”

“I have had conversations with Bob about an extension, but nothing has been finalized,” Michael Koncz, Pacquiao’s adviser, told ESPN.com. “Do we fight again this year or take some time off and fight next year? There are a lot of things to work on, but the new agreement we are discussing would entail five fights. That’s our intention, barring injury.”

“Bob has been good to us over the years and we have been good to him. We may sign with him or we may not,” Koncz said. “We have other offers on the table and we will look at all our options and decide what’s best for Manny, but I don’t want to discuss the particulars because I don’t want to offend other people.”

Koncz said whether Pacquiao, 35, re-signs with Top Rank or not, a fight with Mayweather “isn’t the driving force.”

“I don’t believe Floyd not fighting us has to do with Bob,” Koncz said. “Why did he wait until he exhausted all other excuses before saying he wouldn’t fight Manny if Bob was involved? First he brought up the drug testing [during the initial 2009 failed negotiations]. Then he wanted Manny to sign with him. Then he wanted to pay Manny only a flat fee of $40 million for the fight instead of sharing a percentage [of the revenue], and now he can’t fight Manny because Bob would be involved?

“Why did he wait so long to bring that up? If that’s true, why not use that excuse a few years ago?”

“We may move to 140 pounds. We have a lot of options and have to be careful with our final decision,” Koncz said. “This is Manny’s career and it’s winding down. That’s another option we have, of going to 140 to find other opponents.”

“We love fighting in America and we wouldn’t mind going back to Cowboys Stadium [where Pacquiao fought twice in 2010],” he said. “But we’re also looking at different venues and countries. Macau was beneficial to everyone involved. In Macau we didn’t have such a heavy dependence on the American pay-per-view money. We’d love to fight in Macau again, whether we re-sign with Bob or not.”

MARCOS MAIDANA TO BRING ARGENTINIAN PRIDE INTO THE RING ON MAY 3 AGAINST FLOYD MAYWEATHER ON SHOWTIME PPV®

Marcos Maidana
LAS VEGAS (April 28, 2014) – On Saturday, May 3, Marcos “El Chino” Maidana will be fighting for more than the unified welterweight world championship and glory of defeating the pound-for-pound king Floyd “Money” Mayweather. The hard-hitting Argentine powerhouse will be representing a country with a deep and storied tradition in the sweet science when he steps into the ring at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in a 12-round welterweight world unification bout live on SHOWTIME PPV®.

For a country known for its passion for soccer, Argentina boasts an impressive boxing history that includes 39 world champions. Today, high profile Argentine boxers are littered across the sport’s landscape including middleweight world champion Sergio “Maravilla” Martinez, former interim world champion Lucas “The Machine” Matthysse, who is coming off of an amazing win over John Molina last Saturday, former WBC welterweight World ChampionCarlos “Tata” Baldomir, three-time light welterweight world champion Juan Martin “Latigo” Coggi and current WBA Interim Featherweight World Champion Jesus Cuellar.

“I know I not only carry the weight of my Argentine people into the ring with me, but also the pride and glory of Hispanics around the world,” said Maidana. ” It would mean everything to me to be able to do something that no one has done in this sport before. I know it will bring great pride to Argentina.”

Mayweather has faced other Argentine fighters during his storied career, defeating Gustavo Cuello in 1998, Carlos Rios in 1999 and Baldomir in 2006, all three by unanimous decision. The question now is whether Maidana is the person who will end this trend.

“Maidana has every possible chance of winning. He has two bricks in his hands and he’s shown that fact on several occasions,” Martinez told Boxing Scene.

“Marcos has the power to hurt Mayweather. We saw that in the [Adrien] Broner fight,” said Matthysse. “If he connects with the right shot and has a chance to connect with more shots, he will be able to beat Mayweather.”

“I think Maidana could win this fight by way of knockout, that’s the only way to go against Mayweather,” Baldomir told ESPN in a recent interview. “Maidana has to break Mayweather’s defense and land one of his signature heavy punches.”

“As an Argentine, I must confess that a victory from Maidana will bring Argentina a huge pride, especially because he’s facing Floyd Mayweather, who is the best pound for pound fighter in the world,” said Coggi. “El Chino has a heavy punch, that’s key for his victory over Mayweather. ”

Despite the long line of champions, the history of Argentines facing No. 1-rated pound-for-pound champions is also strewn with disappointments. Four times an Argentine fighter has found himself in that position and has failed to break through. While these losses were to the household names of Jack Dempsey, Marvin Hagler, Pernell Whitaker and Muhammad Ali, Argentine fans are no doubt clamoring for one of their own to capture their own legendary moment.

Maidana is off to a good-start in making Argentine history, after his thrilling upset of Broner last December. He became the second boxer, after Martinez to be awarded with the “Marca Pais” or “Argentine Trademark.” This honor is given by the Argentine Ministry of Tourism as a way of expressing the pride and support that the Argentine nation has for those individuals.

Maidana will take this and his powerful fists into Las Vegas this week with the hopes of rewriting the history of Argentine boxing from one of just-misses to one of triumph and glory.

SUPERSTAR MAYWEATHER WARY OF DANGEROUS MAIDANA AS HE PLANS TO BEAT HIM AT HIS OWN GAME LIVE ON BOXNATION THIS WEEKEND

mayweather2
LONDON (April 28) – Pound-for-pound king Floyd Mayweather is refusing to underestimate renowned knockout artist Marcos Maidana ahead of their megafight this weekend.

The pair clash at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas on Saturday night, live and exclusive on BoxNation, with boxing’s number one superstar adamant that he will need to be at his very best to overcome the formidable Argentine.

Despite some calling into question Maidana’s chances, the WBC welterweight world champion believes the Santa Fe native’s victory over Adrien Broner to claim the WBA crown last December shows he’s not one to be overlooked.

“Adrien Broner’s a good boxer and he roughed Adrien Broner up and he got the victory, so we can’t say what this guy, can or he can’t do. We cannot overlook the guy,” said Mayweather.

“I can’t just say he’s going to be an easy fight because he’s not going to be an easy fight for me, I don’t think so. What I have to do is I’ve got to make sure that I’m at my best.

“I think when Maidana’s facing me his confidence is built after he beat Adrien Broner because he feels that both of the styles are very, very similar, so it’s like the same style.

“So May 3 I’ve got to go out there and take my time, keep my composure and be me. Everybody thinks he’s just going to be a pushover, but I don’t think so. That’s why I’m training hard and I’m pushing myself to the limit every day,” he said.

Despite his impressive victory over Broner, the 30-year-old Maidana has already suffered defeat at the hands of another man fighting on the bill, British star Amir Khan.

The former unified light-welterweight world champion takes on Luis Collazo on the same night, but Mayweather has refused to focus solely on attacking Maidana’s body, a focal point Khan and others have used to their benefit.

“My focus is this guy. I’m pretty sure he’s going to be well rounded and ready for this fight because this is at a total different level.

“Against Amir Khan, the guy could have been doing a lot of sit-ups and making his body in tip-top condition and tip-top shape. Amir Khan could have just caught him with a good shot,” said Mayweather.

“My body is in very good condition, but sometimes a guy can hit me with a good shot and I can feel it, but we just don’t know how we’re going to approach the fight.

“We’re going to take our time and go out there and if a guy leaves an opening on his face, we’re going to take it, if he leaves an opening on his body we’re going to take it, but we can’t just say we’re going to go in there and everything is going to go to the body. We’re going to take our time and pick the guy apart,” he said.

No matter how the fight pans out the elusive Mayweather, who has captured eight world titles in five weight divisions, is certain that this will be one of the most entertaining bouts this year as he looks to stand in front of the rugged Maidana.

“We must realize that I am the bigger guy even though I walk around at 150. I go no higher than 152. I’m naturally the bigger guy because I’ve been at 147 almost 10 years now, so I’m naturally the bigger guy. I think that my dad has the game plan to stay in the pocket, make the guy miss and make the guy pay,” he said.

It is the fact he is able to see the shots coming and adjust which will allow Mayweather to adopt this game plan despite the threat such a bold strategy like this presents against one of the best punchers around.

“I can see the shots,” said Mayweather. “Actually, I can feel when a guy’s going to punch. I can feel it. I don’t even have to see it; I can feel it. You know, this is just with experience and being around the sport so long. I can just feel a guy when he’s going to shoot his shot. A lot of times guys telegraph their shot. Their body language gives away when they’re going to shoot because of how they position themselves.

“So when a guy positions himself in a certain way you know what shot he’s going to throw, but my thing is whatever a guy’s best attribute is, whatever he does best, my goal is to take that away from him and make him resort to doing something else,” he said.

Mayweather vs. Maidana is live on BoxNation (Sky 437/490HD & Virgin 546) this Saturday night from midnight. Visit www.boxnation.com to subscribe.

Abraham wants to prove himself with quick ring return vs. Sjekloca

arthur_abraham
In less than a week, Arthur Abraham wants to defend his WBO Crown against Nikola Sjekloca. In this interview, the prodigy of coach Ulli Wegner talks about his quick return to the squared circle and what he thinks about a possible fourth match up with compatriot Robert Stieglitz.

Only two months ago, you won back the WBO Super Middleweight World Championship from Robert Stieglitz. You will defend that title on May 3. Do you have something to prove?

Arthur Abraham: No. I do not have to prove anything to anyone, except myself. I want to show that I am still hungry for success and also want to conserve my current shape by staying active. I can take a break when I am 40 years old – being retired for good.

Before you beat Stieglitz for the WBO Title, a lot of fans and experts said that you have had enough. Was your answer inside the ring also an answer to your critics?

Arthur Abraham: I also had good tactics at hand in the rematch with Stieglitz, but his “lucky punch” rendered them void. I had the same kind of preparation for our rubber match and you saw what happened there. If I would have a lack of motivation I would have hang the gloves up rather today than tomorrow. I do not give a damn about what the critics say about it.

What about a fourth meeting with Stieglitz in the future?

Arthur Abraham: We have given the fans an action-packed fight recently and I can envision that we can still give them another good fight. However, if it will come this far – I do not now. First, Stieglitz has to earn the chance to make it happen. Maybe he has to go up against someone like Tyron Zeuge, who might be too much for Stieglitz to overcome.

Next up for you is a title defense against Nikola Sjekloca. What are your thoughts on him?

Arthur Abraham: He is physical strong and has only lost once to current world champion Sakio Bika. His technique is also respectable but it still will not be enough to beat me.

When you first met Sjekloca at the kick-off press conference earlier this month, he talked more about a possible unification with Bika than about fighting you. Does he lack the proper respect for you?

Arthur Abraham: I do not care for his future plans. And by the way: who is the world champion – him or me? Before it gets tough inside the ring, a lot of fighters can talk a good game but cannot follow up their words with action. Watch my fight on May 3 to see this happen again.

Moreover, how do you want to earn Sjekloca’s respect?

Arthur Abraham: With my punching power. When my first hard punch lands precisely, Sjekloca will know what he is up against. Then it will show what he is made of.

Your coach Ulli Wegner said that you are still progressing as a boxer. How long do you want to go on with your career?

Arthur Abraham: I hope for at least another 2-3 years. I am feeling that I still have the potential to fight against the world’s best. I am still aiming to take revenge for some of my losses, like against Andre Ward. But now, it is all about beating Sjekloca on May 3.

Tickets for the fight night at the Velodrom in Berlin, Germany are available via www.eventim.de.

Thurman retains interim title when Diaz hurts ribs

Keith Thurman
Keith Thurman retained the WBA Interim Welterweight title when Julio Diaz could not continue after 3 rounds at the Stub Hub Center in Carson, California.

Thurman controlled the action for most of the bout and hurt Diaz in the 1st round. He boxed well in the 2nd round and scored a knockdown when he landed a left to the head and Diaz took a knee. Ironically Diaz made a nice stand at the end of the 3rd round when he landed a solid combination. In between round’s three and four, Diaz’s corner pulled the pug on the fight.

Thurman, 145 1/2 lbs of Clearwater, FL is now 23-0 with 21 knockouts. Diaz, 146 3/4 lbs of Cochella, CA is now 40-10-1.

Said Thurman, “I felt the body shot (to Diaz). I felt he was going to go down. I wondered if I hadn’t landed it clean enough. He’s a tough guy. He showed up to fight. You saw what he was doing in the ring. His rib… he had eight more rounds to go so he did what he had to do.

“I landed a clean left hook to the temple (in the second). He felt it. So, he thought it would be better to take a knee, rather than take another shot to the head. I train to do that. If you feel that your legs aren’t right and you are in with a dangerous puncher, you take a knee. It was a wise decision.

“Everybody shoots for the Mayweather sweepstakes. I am here to entertain, to dominate the welterweight division. I love the sport of boxing. I love knockouts. I am going to keep giving them to you.

“Shawn Porter is a terrific fighter. He’s a great friend of mine. He’s a devastating boxer-puncher like myself. Whenever they’re ready, I am ready.

Diaz, who took a knee after getting hit, had no excuses. “I got caught with a good body shot, in the rib,’’ he said. “I had trouble breathing. After the punch, I couldn’t breathe. I am human. I got hurt. The guy had some power. But I am a two-time champion. I have never quit in a fight. I didn’t have anything to prove. I took a knee to recuperate from a shot to the back of my head. And the rib shot really got me. I ain’t 18 years old anymore. I wanted to give a war, but I had to know when it was my time.’’

Lucas Matthysse was dropped twice but came back to stop gritty John Molina in a scheduled 12-round Jr. Welterweight bout.

The power punches were early and often in round one as Matthysse landed a couple of left hooks while Molina landed a hard overhand right. In round two, Molina landed a perfect overhand right that sent Matthysse to the canvas for the 2nd consecutive fight. The drama continued in round three when the two clashed heads and a cut was opened up over the left eye of Matthysse. Matthysse fought back in round four as he landed some hard shots that were set up behind a strong jab. Molina began to bleed from behind his right ear. Just as Matthysse was showing his dominance, Molina sent Matthysse to the canvas in round five.

The two continued to trade shots at close range with Matthysse landing the harder blows that were set up from his jab. In round eight, Matthysse landed a big flurry of punches that wobbled Molina and ultimately he was pushed down but referee Pat Russell ruled a knockdown. Matthysse started to take control and began to batter Molina and dropped him in round ten after a flurry of hard punches. Molina was seen by the doctors between rounds. When the 11th round began, Matthysse was all over Molina and dropped him to the canvas and the bout was stopped just 22 seconds into the frame.

Matthysse, 140 lbs of Argentina is now 35-3 with 33 knockouts. Molina, 139 1/4 lbs of Covina, Ca is now 27-4.

“It was a war,’’ said Matthysse, who improved his record to 35-3 with 33 KOs. “And it got complicated for me at the beginning, but we trained for this and we got the knockout. He hit me in the back of the head (in the second) and I crumbled a bit but I was waiting to find my distance and I was able to finish a tough fight.

“Molina is a tough fighter. He took some big blows (14 unanswered at the end of the 10th). I was a bit surprised he came back out for the 11th.”

Regarding his loss last September to unified 140-pound world champion Danny Garcia, Matthysse said, “I want the rematch. I feel that he had very good luck that night. I want the rematch.”

Offered the game but proud Molina (27-4, 22 KOs) afterward: “I am very disappointed. We gave the fans a good fight and I’m happy about that. I wasn’t well-known before this fight but I feel like I am now. I’m disappointed I didn’t finish Lucas. I had him hurt, but this is a learning experience. I only had a few amateur fights, so I’m learning from every experience.

“Trainer) Joe Goossen had a great game plan and we were sticking to it. Lucas Matthysse is the real deal. Even though he lost to Garcia, he still is the No. 1 rated fighter. I’d love to fight him again. I wanted to continue but the referee and judges have their jobs to do.

“It was a helluva fight. This was the fight of the year. I’d like to do it again

Omar Figueroa retained the WBC Lightweight title with a split decision over Jerry Belmontes.

Belmontes got off to a good start as he landed quick combinations and surprisingly matched Figueroa punch for punch on the inside. Figueroa surged back with busier volume punching in the middle rounds. The pace actually slowed down in the championship rounds and the fight seemed close on the score cards.

Figueroa, 134 3/4 lbs of Walesco, TX won by scores of 118-110, 116-112 while Belmontes took a card 115-113.

Figueroa, is now 23-0-1. Belmontes, 134 3/4 lbs of Corpus Christi, TX is now 19-4.

“He gave me more than trouble,’’ Figueroa said. “He wouldn’t make a fight out of it. I’m sorry to the fans. It was more of a sparring match than a fight. I prepared so much and this was the outcome.

“He almost made me cry again but of laughter saying he was going to beat me. I prepared well. I came 100 percent. I knew he was going to run. My hands are a little sore but nothing bad, nothing crazy. Now take my time off. I have been training since January. But it is up to Al Haymon.”

Said Belmontes: “Honestly, I thought I won the fight. I thought I landed the clearer more effective shots. I don’t fight like that (running) but sometimes I pay attention to the fans when they are booing so I went inside and fought like a Mexican warrior. He couldn’t handle my jab. He couldn’t’ handle me on the outside. I thought I won the fight.”

Jermall Charlo remained undefeated by scoring a stoppage at the end of four rounds when Hector Munoz was deemed unable to continue in their scheduled 10-round Middleweight fight.

Charlo beat, battered and bloodied Munoz until the referee stopped the fight in the corner on advice from the ringside doctor.

Charlo landed a hard right uppercut in the 1st round.

“I just tried very hard,’’ said Charlo after the one-sided proceedings were stopped. “Two camps in, I was hungrier than ever. I am hungrier than any fighter. I want to go on to bigger thing so badly. I credit Munoz for taking the fight. He showed a lot of spirit. But I had him. I’m so ready for the next level. I need it.’’

Terrell Gausha scored an 8-round unanimous decision over veteran Charles Whittaker in a Jr. Middleweight bout.

Guasha started to get things going in round two. Gausha continued to win rounds and then he dropped Whitaker in round six from a right hand. Gausha jumped on Whitaker and landed a flurry of punches.

Gausha was never threatened and by scores of 80-71 on all cards.

Gausha, 154 3/4 lbs of Carson, CA is now 9-0. Whittaker, 155 3/4 lbs of the Cayman Island is now 40-15-2.

Joseph Diaz scored a 6-round unanimous decision over veteran Luis Maldonado in a Super Bantamweight bout.

Diaz, 122 3/4 lbs won by scores of 60-54 on all cards and is now 10-0. Maldonado, 121 1/3 lbs is now 36-13-1.

KENNETH SIMS JR. & EDUARDO MARTINEZ WIN BY KNOCKOUT AND IMPROVE TO 2-0

MILWAUKEE (April 25, 2014) – Gary Shaw Productions undefeated sensations, Jr. Welterweight Kenneth “Bossman” Sims Jr. (2-0, 1 KO) and Super-Bantamweight Eduardo Martinez (2-0, 1 KO) were victorious tonight at the Turner Hall Ballroom in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Both men competed in separate 4-round bouts.

Martinez mounted a vicious body attack that forced his opponent, Mateo Soto (0-5), to quit on his stool after the first round. The body blows were heard throughout the arena and Martinez was elated with joy, winning is second professional bout by knockout, the first of his bright career.

“My goal was to come out here tonight and get the knockout,” said Martinez. “I felt my punches were doing a lot of damage because I could hear my opponent grunting every time I landed a shot to his body. Gary Shaw, Antonio Leonard and James Prince are doing a great job with my career and I can’t wait to return to action. I’m very happy with my performance and I want to get back in the ring as soon as possible.”

Sims Jr. won by 2nd round knockout by using superior boxing skills while landing hard shots to his opponent Jose Araguz (0-2). After a series of nice combinations that had Arqauz hurt in round one, a right hook ended the bout in the second round. Sims records his first knockout of his career.

“I brought the heat like I said I was going to do, and I got the KO,” said Sims Jr. “There is nothing more exciting than winning a professional fight by knockout. Man I was juiced. All my people came out to see me tonight and I delivered, which makes me very happy. I want to thank my team for all their support especially my promoters Gary Shaw and Antonio Leonard, along with my manager James Prince. I’m hoping to make a quick return to the ring.”

“We knew we had the goods when we signed Sims Jr. and Martinez,” said Gary Shaw. “These kids are very special and tonight they dazzled the crowed with their performances. I’m very proud of them. Antonio Leonard, James Prince and I will be looking to get them both back in the ring very soon.”

This fight card is presented by Ibom Stars Promotions LLC, FedEx Smart Post Inc of New Berlin Wisconsin, Dameon Okposio promotions of Canada and Bryan Drake Inc of Teutonia Wine and Liquor, in association with Gary Shaw Productions.

Font knocks Tristan cold in main event

LINCOLN, R.I. (April 25th, 2014) – It seemed as though no one would be able to top Luis Felix’s electrifying knockout of UFC vet Drew Fickett at Twin River Casino last month.

Rob Font was up to the task.

In the clear-cut Knockout of the Night, Font put veteran featherweight Tristan Johnson to sleep with an overhand right at the two-minute, 48-secod mark of the opening round Friday in the main event of “CES MMA XXIII.”

With Johnson backpedaling toward the cage, Font (10-1, 3 KOs) reached in with a left and then followed with a right that caught Johnson (8-5) flush on the temple. Johnson was out the second he hit the canvas, prompting referee Kevin MacDonald to stop the bout before Font could do any additional damage.

Font, the reigning CES MMA featherweight champion now fighting out of Boston, has won nine consecutive fights since his lone loss in 2012. His knockout win in the main event was the second for CES in the last two months; in March, Felix put an exclamation point on “CES MMA XXII” with a head kick that knocked Fickett cold.

In what was billed as a potential Fight of the Night candidate when the card was first announced, veteran bantamweight Tateki Matsuda (9-5) of Boston (Tokyo, Japan) snapped a two-fight losing streak with a 29-28, 30-27, 30-26 unanimous decision win over the previously unbeaten Matt Doherty (3-1) of Salem, Mass.

The cagey Matsuda, who had lost each of his last two fights by split decision, took control with his dominant ground game in the second and third rounds, even earning a 10-8 round on one of the judge’s scorecards. Always versatile, Matsuda let his hands go in the third to soften up Doherty, and then took him to the canvas and ran out the rest of the clock with effective ground-and-pound.

Exciting welterweight prospect Eric Spicely (4-0) of Olneyville, R.I., remained unbeaten with an impressive, textbook win over David Jordan (1-3) of Las Vegas, submitting Jordan via guillotine at the 1:35 mark of the opening round, while Wareham, Mass., veteran Matthew Thompson (19-9) used the same hold to submit Eric Bedard (6-5) of East Providence, R.I., at the 2:04 mark of the second round in a scheduled three-round cruiserweight bout. Thompson worked his way back from a poor opening round and caught Bedard with his neck exposed while Bedard tried to take him to the canvas. Thompson now has 10 wins by submission.

Middleweight Brandon Chagnon (5-4) opened the card with a second-round submission win over the always-competitive Ralph Johnson (6-11) of Worcester, Mass., who took the fight on short notice. Johnson, a hard-hitting, 6-foot-5 striker, dominated the opening round by using his reach to keep Chagnon at the end of his jab, but once Chagnon got Johnson to the canvas, he made quick work of his opponent, submitting Johnson via rear-naked choke at the 1:26 mark.

Fighting for the first time in more than a year, Norwich, Conn., featherweight Peter Rogers Jr. (1-1) earned his first career win, submitting Franklin Isabel (4-7) of Chelsea, Mass., who tapped due to strikes 2:39 into the opening round. Rogers, who lost his pro debut in 2012, caught Isabel with a left kick to the midsection, sending Isabel to the canvas. As Rogers went in for the ground-and-pound, Isabel quickly tapped, handing Rogers Jr. his first win.

Bellator vet Rico DiSciullo (2-0) bounced back from a point-deduction in the opening round of his bantamweight bout against Jordan Espinosa (3-3) to earn a 29-26, 29-27, 29-26 unanimous decision win. DiSciullo lost a point for kneeing his grounded opponent, but dominated the final two rounds, rebounding from a no contest in his previous bout (also due to kneeing a grounded opponent).
