Jermain Taylor to return on December 14

jermain_taylor_image
Former Middleweight champion Jermain Taylor will return to the ring on December 14th against JC Candelo in San Antonio according to Dan Rafael of espn.com.

“Al (Haymon, Taylor’s manager) asked us to put him on the card and we put him on the card,” said Golden Boy Promotions Richard Schaefer, who has a very close relationship with Haymon, told ESPN.com on Tuesday

“This opportunity for Jermain came up so we’ve been training really hard,” Taylor’s trainer Pat Burns told ESPN.com. “He looks fantastic. He’s excited and in great spirits. In the last year the highest he went up to was 177 pounds. As soon as I got here (to Little Rock for training camp) on Oct. 14, he was about 170. After two workouts he was 166, which is absolutely perfect.”

“I think people should be entitled to their own opinion if a fighter should retire or not, but it’s a personal thing and I am not going to go and tell somebody they should retire,” Schaefer said. “Whether Jermain should retire or not, it’s not up to me to decide. Jermain Taylor is not a stupid guy. If he feels he has the necessary tools to compete, and so do the people around him, then let him do that.

“Let him try that and see where it will take him. He’ll have this fight and take it from there. He and his team can make that assessment.”

CONFIDENT PACQUIAO OUT TO SLAY ‘GOLIATH’ RIOS AS POUND-FOR-POUND ACE RETURNS LIVE ON BOXNATION THIS WEEKEND

Pacquiao_workout 3
LONDON (19 Nov) – Boxing superstar Manny Pacquiao believes size will be no factor as he looks to take down the ‘Goliath’ Brandon Rios this Saturday night live on BoxNation.

The Filipino powerhouse steps back into the ring for the first time since his devastating knockout loss to Juan Manuel Marquez last December and has called on Biblical legend to help inspire him against a man whose height advantage has led some to believe will be a key element in how the fight plays out.

The ‘Fighter of the Decade’, however, has dismissed such claims believing that the bigger they are, the harder they fall.

“Am I confident for my fight with Rios? I am more than confident,” said Pacquiao.

“Rios is bigger than me. Remember Goliath was bigger than David and yet David needed just one stone to fell the giant. I enter this fight stronger than ever.

“I have the strength of my country and my people coursing through my body. I fight for them, not for me. I fight for their glory, not mine,” he said.

The eight-division world champion’s belief that he is stronger than ever is something which has been backed by his world renowned trainer Freddie Roach.

Despite two back-to-back losses, one of those a highly contentious defeat to Timothy Bradley, Roach thinks that this will be the very best Pacquiao in a long time.

“Manny’s last training session was nothing short of amazing,” said Roach.

“We were supposed to do six rounds on the mitts and I cut it off after four rounds. They were the best four rounds of mitts I have ever done with Manny. He was blazing. He was throwing the heat. This was the happiest and most productive camp I have had with Manny in years,” he said.

“I know I predicted that Manny would knock Rios out inside six rounds but based on our last workout, I don’t see how Rios makes it past the fourth round,” Roach added.

Such bold claims appear to have had little effect on the unrelenting Rios, whose come forward, all-action style, have made him a fans favourite.

“I want to feel Manny’s power. I want to feel all of it. This is the first training camp I have kept to the game plan and done everything I was told to do. Manny Pacquiao is a big step. I am going to shut everyone up and prove I am the best,” Rios said.

“The second [Mike] Alvarado fight was my bad. I was focused on knocking him out and that’s how I trained and fought, throwing one shot at a time trying to land that knockout punch. It was also the first time I ever lifted weights and by the third round I was slowing down.

“This time I am focusing on winning – not on the knockout – and Robert and his dad have designed a lot of ways for me to do that. My body clock has finally adjusted to Macau. I slept until 7am and was in the gym before 9am,” he said.

“I know we are in Manny’s backyard and I want to win every round. I have trained not to give up a minute to Manny Pacquiao,” added Rios.

World Series of Fighting signs heavyweight Scott “The Bear” Barrett, welterweight Valdir “BBMonster” Araujo

LAS VEGAS (Nov 19, 2013) – World Series of Fighting is happy to announce the addition of two more fighters to its rapidly growing roster, as both Scott “The Bear” Barrett (13-3) and Valdir Araujo (14-4) have agreed to exclusive, multi-fight deals with the Las Vegas-based promotion.

Both fighters are expected to debut in the World Series of Fighting decagon in early 2014.

“It’s always exciting to ink deals with exciting fighters, and today is no exception,” World Series of Fighting President Ray Sefo said. “Both of these fighters have a history of putting on incredible performances, and I can’t wait to see what they can accomplish in our promotion.”

Heavyweight Barrett is a 29-year-old powerhouse who currently trains with the famed Blackzilians team at Florida’s Jaco Hybrid Training Center. Fighting professionally since 2007, Barrett boasts 10 if his 13 career wins by way of knockout. Nine of those finishes came in the very first round.

“Signing with the WSOF means the world to me,” Barrett said. “Fighting for one of the biggest organizations out there is every fighters goal. Now it’s time to show everyone who I am and what I can do! Being part of the Blackzilians has made me a different and more dangerous fighter. I can’t wait to put it all together and get in the cage. I’m here to put on a show and get finishes!”

Meanwhile, Araujo is a Brazilian native who also currently makes his home in Florida. The reigning welterweight champion of Florida’s Championship Fighting Alliance promotion, Araujo will give up that belt in order to purse World Series of Fighting success.

Araujo owns a well-rounded game, as witnessed by his six knockout wins and five submission victories. His three losses have come to top talent, including a 15-minute outing with current UFC middleweight champion Chris Weidman and a disappointing defeat earlier this year to current World Series of Fighting competitor Marcelo Alfaya, setting up a potential rematch with those two somewhere down the line.

“World Series of Fighting has got a lot of excitement surrounding their welterweight division right now,” said the newly signed Araujo. “I’m honored to be a part of that excitement and show the world that I’m a warrior and champion in this sport.”

Manny Pacquiao and Brandon Rios Return to The Venetian Macao.

Pacquiao_Rios_LA1
MACAU, CHINA (November 19, 2013) – Fighter of the Decade MANNY “Pacman” PACQUAO and former world champion BRANDON “Bam Bam” RIOS are back together – almost – at least in the same hotel, ensconced inside luxury suites at The Venetian Macao. Boxing’s top-two pound-for pound all-action superstars will make their Grand Arrivals – full of pomp and circumstance — Tuesday night – in Prime Time – at the Main Porte Cochere of the host resort. Rios will make his entrance, greeting his fans and meeting with dignitaries, at 9:00 p.m. local time, followed by Congressman Pacquiao at 9:30 p.m.

Upon their arrival at Macau International Airport on Monday evening, Pacquiao and Hall of Fame trainer World-Famous Freddie Roach had this to say:

MANNY PACQUIAO
“Am I confident for my fight with Rios? I am more than confident. Rios is bigger than me. Remember Goliath was bigger than David and yet David needed just one stone to fell the giant. I enter this fight stronger than ever. I have the strength of my country and my people coursing through my body. I fight for them, not for me. I fight for their glory, not mine.”

FREDDIE ROACH
“Manny’s last training session was nothing short of amazing. We were supposed to do six rounds on the mitts and I cut it off after four rounds. They were the best four rounds of mitts I have ever done with Manny. He was blazing. He was throwing the heat. This was the happiest and most productive camp I have had with Manny in years. I know I predicted that Manny would knock Rios out inside six rounds but based on our last workout, I don’t see how Rios makes it past the fourth round.”

Rios and Garcia hosted a roundtable in their suite with the first wave of international media who arrived earlier in the day.

BRANDON RIOS
“I want to feel Manny’s power. I want to feel all of it. This is the first training camp I have kept to the game plan and done everything I was told to do. Manny Pacquiao is a big step. I am going to shut everyone up and prove I am the best. The second Alvarado fight was my bad. ROBERT GARCIA
“Twice during the two episodes of “24/7” I’ve heard Freddie Roach say he will ask Manny Pacquiao to retire if he loses to Brandon Rios. Well, Freddie had better buy that gold watch for Manny, because the retirement party begins on Saturday night. I guarantee you this will be the last time you ever see Manny Pacquiao on an HBO Pay-Per-View.”

UFC RETURNS TO NEWARK WITH TWO TITLE FIGHTS ON BIGGEST SPORTS WEEKEND OF 2014

Las Vegas, Nev. – Two world title fights headline UFC’s return to Prudential Center in Newark, N.J. on Saturday, Feb. 1, 2014. In the night’s main event, the undisputed UFC bantamweight champion will be crowned when reigning champion Dominick Cruz (19-1, fighting out of San Diego, Calif.) returns to action after two years away from competition due to injury to meet red-hot interim champion Renan Barao (33-1, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil).

Then, in the night’s co-main event, UFC featherweight champion Jose Aldo (23-1, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) returns to the Octagon® to face proven finisher Ricardo Lamas (13-2, fighting out of Chicago, Ill.), a winner of four straight.

If that wasn’t enough, two former heavyweight champions collide when former UFC heavyweight champion Frank Mir battles former Strikeforce® champion Alistair Overeem.

“We put together a fight worthy of Super Bowl weekend,” UFC president Dana White said. “It’s the fight that everyone has been waiting for – champion vs. champion – Dominick Cruz vs. Renan Barao for the 135-pound title. Dominick Cruz is the reigning champion and hasn’t lost a fight in six years. He takes on the interim bantamweight champion Renan Barao, who’s been on a tear with a 30-fight win streak and hasn’t lost in eight years. Two of the best pound-for-pound fighters in the world, two of the best 135-pounders on earth: the world is finally going to find out who is the undisputed 135-pound champion!

“Plus, the unstoppable Jose Aldo takes on the man everyone has been waiting to see him fight, Ricardo Lamas. Aldo has been the 145-pound champion since 2009 and he’s torn through the featherweight division. But Ricardo Lamas has heavy hands, great wrestling and will be the toughest test of Aldo’s career.”

Haroon Khan’t wait to get in the ring again on Dec 14th following Bulgarian blitzing

BOLTON (Nov 18) – Haroon Khan will bounce right back into action next month in Wigan following his demolition of Bulgarian Stefan Slavchev.

The Bolton youngster looked calm and assured in the ring last Friday night at Blackpool’s Winter Gardens as he patiently broke down his 20-year-old compatriot who had no answers to the succession of quick flurries and powerful right hands that kept landing throughout.

The 2010 Commonwealth Games bronze medalist returns to the ring on December 14th in Wigan after moving to a record of 3-0 following his victory over Slavchev.

Khan showed tremendous maturity in his recent outing as he picked away at his opponent and circled him over the course of the fight, refusing to waste any shots, and smart enough to avoid getting carelessly caught by rushing in.

His patience over the four rounds was telling, as he continuously pushed back his opponent, who went into his shell after feeling the young super-flyweight’s power.

The 22-year-old, younger brother of former unified light-welterweight world champion Amir Khan, continues to show that he has inherited the same exciting boxing genes as his older sibling.

The future is bright for one of Britain’s top young prospects who is looking forward to jumping straight back into the ring again as he looks to make moves on the domestic circuit.

“I’m pleased with how I did against Stefan Slavchev but now I’m looking to the future and December 14th,” said Khan.

“It was great to get another win under my belt and I’m aiming for a similar performance in Wigan next month. My team are looking to move me at a good pace and the level of competition is going to keep getting better as I progress but I’m ready for that challenge,” he said.

“It was good to have Amir ringside for my last fight – that gave me a big boost. His insight, along with Oliver Harrison and his team gives me a solid foundation to really push on over the coming months,” Khan added.

The opponent for Haroon’s next fight and ticket details will be announced in due course.

British heavyweight star David Price signs with Team Sauerland

Team Sauerland is delighted to announce the signing of British heavyweight star David Price. The 30-year-old Liverpudlian (15-2, 13 KOs), who currently holds the British and Commonwealth Titles, has inked a long-term deal with Europe´s largest and oldest promotional company. “We are thrilled to welcome David to our team of champions,” promoter Kalle Sauerland said. “He is one of the most exciting fighters in the most spectacular division. We firmly believe that David Price has all the necessary tools to become Heavyweight Champion of the World. His power is frightening and his size formidable, but in addition to this he is a genuine boxing talent. Personality wise he can become one of the big UK sports stars – no doubt about it. He is genuine and sports fans love genuine characters.’’

“I’m excited to be joining Europe’s biggest promoters,’’ said Price. “Kalle and Nisse are great blokes and I am looking forward to working with them. This is a fresh start for me. I can’t wait to get back into action and with a new team around me I feel I can pick up where I left off and become a world champion.’’

Price has teamed up with Adam Booth, who will be training him at his Hayemaker gym.

“I’ve always believed that David Price has a lot of potential,’’ said Booth. “And now I have an opportunity to help him fulfil it. He is undoubtedly one of the hardest punchers in world boxing, but he understands that in itself isn’t enough, so we are working on all other elements of his fighting. He is showing that he has the right desire and attitude to make the necessary changes. Then it’s down to David to prove himself!’’

“With Adam as his trainer and us taking care of all promotional matters we believe David has a winning team around him,’’ Nisse Sauerland said. “We will keep him busy, giving him the right fights at the right time. David is an extremely talented boxer and we have every confidence in him becoming a future World Champion.’’

Staging 20 top-class international events per year, Team Sauerland promotes the Viking Warrior Mikkel Kessler, former WBA Heavyweight Champion Alexander Povetkin, cruiserweight champions Marco Huck (WBO) and Yoan Pablo Hernandez (IBF), IBF heavyweight mandatory challenger Kubrat Pulev, WBO number one ranked heavyweight Dennis Boystov, former middleweight & super middleweight world champion King Arthur Abraham and in the UK up-and-coming British cruiserweight prospect Deion Jumah, amongst many others. Can Gingras dethrone Manfredo Friday? ‘It ain’t gonna happen,’ says confident Manfredo

peter_manfredo_jr
PROVIDENCE, R.I. (Nov. 18th, 2013) –The highly-anticipated showdown scheduled for Friday night between Peter Manfredo Jr. and Rich Gingras almost didn’t happen.

Following a decisive win over Walter Wright in March — the second fight of Manfredo’s most recent comeback — “The Pride Of Providence” quietly decided that was enough; it was finally time to hang up the gloves and be a full-time husband and father.

Then everything changed in July when Manfredo’s close friend, former Rhode Island boxer Gary Balletto, suffered a fall at his home that left him paralyzed from the waist down.

“When he got hurt, it hurt me,” Manfredo said. “He might never be able to walk again, so I thought it’d be nice to come back and fight for him while I can still walk, talk and move.”

As Balletto continues the fight of his life, doing everything within his power to walk again, Manfredo (39-7, 20 KOs) finds himself in a battle that may very well be the fight of his life, a 10-round showdown against the hard-hitting Gingras (13-3-1, 8 KOs) in the main event of “Pride & Power,” scheduled for Friday, Nov. 22, 2013 at Twin River Casino and presented by Jimmy Burchfield’s Classic Entertainment & Sports.

Manfredo has faced some of the best fighters in the world, from Jeff Lacy, to Joe Calzaghe to Julio Cesar Chavez Jr., but Friday’s bout against Gingras is a unique challenge at this stage in his career. Manfredo will turn 33 next Tuesday. He’s more than a boxer these days; he’s a father of three, a devoted husband, and a full-time laborer in Massachusetts. He no longer eats, sleeps and breathes boxing like he did during his heyday when he starred on The Contender reality series and challenged for world titles.

Having to balance his life outside of the gym with his life between the ropes makes every challenge, especially Friday’s, riskier than ever, even if Gingras doesn’t have as much experience as some of the elite fighters Manfredo has gone toe-to-toe with in the past.

“This is a young man’s game now. That’s why I retired,” Manfredo said. “I’ve been in this game 13 years as a pro – all my life, really – and it’s tough to do both when you’re working a full-time job. You need health care. You need things for your family. To compete at the level I was competing at, you can’t work.

“You have to dedicate 100 percent of your time to the sport of boxing. I decided to hang it up and become a full-time dad and worker, but Gary is a friend of mine. There were times when I didn’t get along with my old man and he threw me out of the gym. Gary always opened the door for me. He was always a friend.

“As boxers, we all have that side of ourselves where we are brothers. It takes a special person to be a fighter. My heart and prayers go out to Gary and his family. He’s in the biggest fight of his life trying to walk again, but if anyone can do it, it’s him. I want to go out there one more time and box for him.”

Though he may not admit it, this fight is about more than just honoring Balletto. Manfredo has been Rhode Island’s most popular, successful fighter since Vinny Paz stepped away from the ring and passed the torch more than a decade ago. Gingras, who owns a business in Pawtucket, R.I., and lives in nearby Lincoln, just a stone’s throw from Twin River, has a chance to dethrone Manfredo and become the talk of the town. Not on his turf, Manfredo says, and not on this night.

“He thinks he’s going to come in there and throw a million shots and wear me out and be too much for me, but it ain’t gonna happen,” Manfredo said.

“I’ve seen everything. I’ve been in there with the best in the world. I have more experience. No matter what he brings, it’s nothing I haven’t seen. I’ve prepared myself well. I’m in great shape and I know he’s going to be in great shape, too. The best man will win.”

Manfredo admits he originally wanted to face the winner of the July showdown between Gingras and fellow Providence super middleweight Vladine Biosse, but that fight ended in a draw. In the interim, Gingras agreed to step up and face Manfredo, resulting in what figures to be a fitting ending to the 2013 Twin River Fight Series.

“He’s definitely going to give me a run for my money, especially now that I’m not in the prime of my career,” Manfredo said of Gingras. “He’s a tough kid. He looks good. He’s big, strong – I’ve got my hands full, but when don’t you have your hands full? That’s why we fight. Nothing is written in stone.”

Neither are Manfredo’s retirements. After ending his first retirement in 2009, Manfredo promised he’d walk away again if he lost to Chavez Jr. in 2011. He kept his word for more than a year until he returned for the second time in November of 2012, citing the need to take advantage of his earning potential and provide for his family. Although money is his driving force these days, the passion and hunger always return once that bell rings.

“You turn into a monster. You get that tunnel vision,” he said. “I’ve always said fighters are born, not made. That fighter comes out of you when the bell rings. You can’t hear anything or anybody in the crowd and you’re focused on what you need to do.

“I’m already in that mindset. I’m dieting. I’m losing weight. I’m kind of mean right now. You change. People at work look at me and notice the change in me. That’s just part of being a fighter. The fighter is coming out of me now.

“On Friday, it’s all business. I’m good friends with Rich, but I’m going to try to knock his head off just like he’s going to try to knock off mine, and when it’s over, we’ll have a beer … but I’ll have a root beer because I don’t drink.”

Asked if he has one more fight in him after Friday, Manfredo, who is also aiming for his 40th professional win, said, “We’ll see. That’s the beauty of this game. You never know. One shot can change anything. I could be in total control, and one shot could change everything. That’s the beauty of this sport.”

Tickets for the event are priced at $46, $61, $101 and $161 (VIP) and can be purchased by calling 401-724-2253/2254, online at www.cesboxing.com or www.ticketmaster.com, or at the Players Club at Twin River. All fights and fighters are subject to change.

“Pride & Power” also features the return of former four-time world champion “Hurricane” Jaime Clampitt (21-5-1, 7 KOs) of Warwick, R.I., who will face Dominga Olivo (8-8-1) of Brooklyn, N.Y., in the six-round lightweight co-feature, ending a three-year layoff. The undercard also features a special six-round heavyweight attraction with “The Armenian Assassin” Arthur Saribekian (23-4-1, 18 KOs) returning to the ring for the first time in more than a decade to face Hyannis, Mass., product Jesse Barboza (6-1-1, 4 KOs).

Also on the undercard, Cranston, R.I., welterweight Nick DeLomba (2-0) will put his undefeated record on the line against Carlos Hernandez (3-2-1, 2 KOs) of Bridgeport, Conn., in a six-round bout and Providence middleweight KJ Harrison-Lombardi (2-0-1) will return to Twin River in a four-round bout against Mike Rodriguez of Springfield, Mass., who will be making his professional debut. Harrison-Lombardi and Rodriguez faced one another in the amateurs with Rodriguez winning a close decision. Providence light middleweight Publio Pena (1-0, 1 KO) will face Antonio Marrero (0-1) of Hartford, Conn., in a four-round bout. All fights and fighters are subject to change.

BOXING STARS ALIGN FOR PACQUIAO vs. RIOS FIGHT WEEK!

Pacquiao_Rios_LA3
LAS VEGAS, NEV (November 18, 2013) — Boxing’s royalty will be in Las Vegas this week talking about the historic 12-round welterweight showdown between Fighter of the Decade MANNY PACQUIAO and former world champion BRANDON RIOS. Broadcasting throughout the day Live from the Palazzo Waterfall Atrium inside The Palazzo Las Vegas — sister property of the The Venetian Macao, the resort site hosting Pacquiao vs. Rios — Thursday, November 21 and Friday, November 22, 13 national and regional radio shows will be interviewing a boxing’s Who’s Who — in-person, including Hall of Famers George Foreman, Sugar Ray Leonard, Roberto Duran, Pacquiao rivals Marco Antonio Barrera and Timothy Bradley, Rios’ professional nemesis Mike Alvarado, and former world champion Ray Mancini.

The appearance schedule is as follows:

Thursday, November 21
· Timothy Bradley, undefeated two-division world champion who dethroned Pacquiao last year to claim his WBO welterweight title. Claimed his first world title in England, dethroning WBC super lightweight champion and hometown favorite Junior Witter.
· Marco Antonio Barrera, former three-division world champion who fought the majority of his fights outside his native Mexico, including two fights with Pacquiao.
· Mike Alvarado, the former WBO jr. lightweight champion who is 1-1 against Rios.

Friday, November 22
· George Foreman, former two-time heavyweight champion. Fought all his world title fights outside the U.S. during his first title reign.
· Sugar Ray Leonard, former five-division world champion who had one fight outside the U.S. — against Roberto Duran in Montreal — where he lost a unanimous decision — and his welterweight title to Duran.
· Roberto Duran, former four-division world champion who fought the majority of his major fights outside his native Panama.
· Ray Mancini, former lightweight champion who fought outside the U.S. once, in Italy, winning a narrow decision to retain his title.

“While the fight takes place in China, we want U.S. fight fans to be treated to the same real time experience they enjoy for all pay-per-view mega-fights,” said Mark Taffet of HBO Pay-Per-View. “With the star-studded group of fighters, the breadth of the radio stations broadcasting live, and the television and print interviews which emanate from Las Vegas, we will be able to provide a constant flow of news, information and entertainment which U.S. boxing fans can engage on their time. Additionally, the press conference and weigh-in from Macau will take place live at times which are convenient for the U.S. audience; and of course the live fight telecast on Saturday night November 23rd will take place at the usual time of 9 pm ET/6 pm PT.”

The seven boxing superstars will be discussing their experiences — the victories and the losses — when they fought on foreign soil as well as their analysis of the upcoming Pacquiao-Rios battle. Both Barrera and Bradley have first-hand knowledge of what Rios should expect from Pacquiao and what Rios will need to do to have his hand raised in victory in just five days. The same is true for Alvarado, who has tangled with Rios in two Fights of the Year. .

Promoted by Top Rank® and Sands China Ltd., in association with MP Promotions, Tecate, Warner Bros. Pictures “Grudge Match,” and Eva Airlines, Pacquiao vs. Rios will take place Saturday, November 23, at The Venetian® Macao’s CotaiArena™. It will be produced and distributed live by HBO Pay-Per-View®, beginning at 9:00 p.m. ET / 6:00 p.m. PT.

For Pacquiao, this marks the pound-for-pound box office monarch’s first fight outside the U.S. since his 12-round super featherweight unanimous decision victory over former world champion Oscar Larios in 2006, which took place in the Philippines. Rios, one of boxing’s most exciting fighters, has only fought outside the U.S. twice, in México, winning a 10-round split decision over Ricardo Dominguez and knocking out Daniel Valenzuela in the second round in 2008 and 2009, respectively. .

HBO Sports’ groundbreaking “24/7” reality franchise, which has captured 17 Sports Emmy® Awards, is providing an all-access pass to Pacquiao vs. Rios. The final episode of “24/7: Pacquiao/Rios” debuts Thursday, Nov. 21 (10:00 p.m.), just two days before the welterweight showdown.

The Venetian and The Palazzo will be the only resorts in Las Vegas to offer the live closed-circuit broadcast of Pacquiao vs. Rios. The bout will be available for viewing inside The Venetian Ballroom and at Lagasse’s Stadium. Doors open at 5 p.m., undercard fights begin at 6 p.m. Tickets for The Venetian Ballroom are $50. Food and beverage minimums apply for Lagasse’s Stadium. Tickets: 702-414-9000.

Las Vegas residents will still be able to order the live HBO Pay-per-View telecast in their homes.

Nielsen stops Pinzon to defend WBA & WBO Intercontinental Middleweight Titles

Patrick Nielsen´s homecoming to Albertslund was a successful one as he stopped Jose Pinzon in the fifth round to defend his WBA & WBO Intercontinental Middleweight Titles in style. The 22-year-old Dane (21-0, 10 KOs) knocked down his Mexican opponent (24-6, 15 KOs) with a huge left, and the referee waved the bout off after Pinzon had scrambled back to his feet. “What a great win for Patrick,” promoter Nisse Sauerland said. “Pinzon came to win and the first four rounds were tough. But Patrick did really well and caught him with a great left. He has great potential and this sets the stage nicely for a world title fight in 2014.”

Nielsen was happy with his performance. “Pinzon was a tough opponent, he had a very long reach and he really came to fight. But my coach Joey Gamache had prepared me very well. He told me what to do. I am happy I could give my fans a great KO win.”

Patrick Nielsen´s younger brother Micki defeated Germany´s Bjoern Blaschke (KO 1), Dennis Ceylan scored a first-round knock down against Edgar Torres en route to an impressive points victory and Rashid Kassem KOd Maxime Roussel in the first round.

The Swedish Nordic Fight Night fighters Klara Svensson (vs. Borislava Goranova) and Anthony Yigit (vs. Anton Bekish) cruised to clear points victories, with the Norwegians Tim-Robin Lihaug (TKO Steve Kroekel round 3) and Simen Smaadal (TKO Leo Tchoula round 4) clinching impressive stoppages.

Haye hurts shoulder; Fury fight off

david-haye
Former two division world champion David Haye has pulled out his bout with Tyson Fury for the 2nd time, this time for a shoulder injury that required immediate surgery according to Dan Rafael of espn.com

The bout was originally scheduled for September 28th but a cut over Haye’s eye forced a postponement to February 8th.

“I genuinely believed the shoulder injury wasn’t that bad,” Haye said. “But the doctor sent me for a detailed MRI scan and within 24 hours I was told the full extent of the damage. Twenty-four hours after that I was in the operating theater.

“It’s a crushing blow for me. I had big plans for next year and the ultimate goal was to win back the world heavyweight title, something my amazing fans deserve.

“What I didn’t anticipate was that this year would be the unluckiest of my career and that a number of injuries would disrupt my plans so much. Perhaps it just wasn’t meant to be. The boxing gods keep hinting that maybe enough is enough and that it’s time to finally hang up my gloves.”

“The surgery and subsequent results are a bitter pill to swallow because I truly felt I had a lot more to offer and was looking forward to paying back my loyal fans with some great fights in 2014,” Haye said. “But I’ve been boxing for 23 years now, amateur and pro, and this has clearly taken its toll on my body. I can only offer my sincerest apologies to all those fans who have followed me over the years and, like me, wanted to finish on a real high. This wasn’t how I wanted to end 2013.

“If I’m now destined to have won the European championship, the unified world cruiserweight championship and the WBA heavyweight championship of the world, then so be it. I’m proud of these achievements and consider my boxing career a huge success.”

Ward decisions Rodriguez in rough, ugly contest

wardgreenend206
It started at yesterday’s weigh-in when Edwin Rodriguez failed to make weight for his WBA Super Middleweight clash with Andre Ward. Then he and Ward engaged in an ugly fight that saw Ward easily score a twelve round unanimous decision ast the Citizens Business Bank Arena in Ontario, California.

The fight started out with Rodriguez running across the ring and trying to bully Ward. Ward would have nine of that as he started drilling Rodriguez with pinpoint shots with both hands. Ward was dominating the fight with both hands and featured a hard power jab. In round four, the fight turned ugly as inordinate amount of clutching and grabbing by both men forced referee Jack Reiss to not only pause the bout but take two points away from each man, warn them and suggest that the commission fine both fighters. Reiss also intimated that he was hit by a stray punch.

“We had two highly trained athletes full of adrenalin and emotion,” the veteran referee observed. “I deducted two points from each of them and warned them that the deduction of another point would result in a disqualification. That was done with the intent to produce an exciting, competitive fight all the way to its conclusion. And it did.”

That admonishment seemed to work as the bout picked up a better flow but unfortunately for Rodriguez it was all Ward as he continued to rock Rodriguez with body shots, hard jabs and even an uppercut that hurt Rodriguez in round eleven.

Despite being off 14 months for shoulder surgery, Ward solidified his status among the pound for pound elite bu pounding out the decision by scores of 118-106, 117-107 and 116-108 to raise his perfect mark to 27-0. Rodrigiez or Worcester, MA is now 24-1.

“We knew he would come out and try and bull me,” said Ward, who showed no ill effects from his inactivity following surgery to his right shoulder.

“Instead of trying to win rounds he was looking to land one big shot. He wanted to make it ugly and hope he could land something big. Jack Reiss did a tremendous job keeping the action going.”

“He was putting his head down a little too much,” a frustrated Rodriguez pointed out. “Andre Ward is very tricky, but does not have a lot of power in his right hand. I am just disappointed in my performance. The weight had nothing to do with it. He’s a good fighter. What can I say?”

WARD LAYS DOWN GAUNTLET BY DECLARING TO KNOCKOUT ‘DELUSIONAL’ FROCH IN REMATCH AHEAD OF FIGHT THIS WEEKEND LIVE ON BOXNATION

wardpresser150
LONDON (16 Nov) – Super-middleweight king Andre Ward has laid down the gauntlet to Carl Froch, declaring he can knockout the ‘delusional’ British star in a world title unification rematch.

The WBA Super and Ring Magazine world champion has opened the door to a potential blockbuster matchup against the reigning IBF world champion Froch, should both men come through their upcoming battles.

Ward faces off against the unbeaten Edwin Rodriguez in Ontario, California this weekend, a fight you can see live and exclusive on BoxNation, with Froch taking on the rising George Groves in a grudge match later this month.

Should both prevail, Ward is convinced that a super-fight could be next up for the 168-pound division’s two top dogs.

“I think a fight with Froch is definitely something that could happen,” said Ward.

“I’ve said this so many times but I’m not chasing that fight. I won the last fight hands down, and I would be secure moving on. But it’s something that he feels he wants to get another crack at and I’m open for that, absolutely,” he said.

The Olympic gold medalist is also of the belief he can make an early night of it should he share the ring with the Nottingham man again, especially due to the fact he fought with a broken left hand in their first encounter.

“I think I could stop Froch in a rematch. I don’t believe the hype that Froch is invincible. I think he has a really good chin, has taken some big shots and stood up under them and I give him credit for that,” Ward said.

“But sometimes the media makes him out to be some iron man who can’t be stopped. He can be stopped if he gets hit with flush shots.

“It’s only natural to think that if you come into a fight inhibited, injured and limited and you’re still able to do a certain amount of work – if you’re fully healthy just imagine what would happen,” he stated.

The bad blood between the pair has grown ever since their fight in December 2011, due in part to a perceived lack of respect from Froch who has questioned his contemporary’s drawing power.

“I don’t look at it as disrespect – I think he’s delusional,” Ward stated.

“Look at Carl Froch and some of the stuff he says and it doesn’t always add up. One aspect he talks about [is drawing power], if you look at his last ratings on HBO and my last one, it’s night and day.

“He had a few hundred thousand people watch his fight in America and we had over a million watch my last fight with Chad Dawson, so I think he needs to focus on what he’s doing,” said Ward.

The 29-year-old from Oakland has also thrown into question Froch’s apparent warrior tag and has asked why he never brought it to the fore when they clashed.

“It’s funny when a guy says you’re boring but he had 12 rounds, 12 rounds, to make it interesting, to be the monster that he says that he is and get a war going,” he said.

“If you watch that fight I didn’t run, I didn’t duck, I didn’t dodge, I was right in the pocket with him. It was tougher than he thought it was going to be, so instead of giving me my just due he makes excuses,” Ward added.

“Now he’s turning into a TV executive, and then a promoter, when he’s talking about no one wants to watch me. Well, his fans in the UK want to watch me as well as fans in the US, so I just don’t think the stuff he says is accurate or adds up,” he said.

Ward believes that the three-time world champion should take a leaf out of Ricky Hatton’s book and give credit where credit is due.

The fan favourite ‘Hitman’ suffered defeats against two of boxing’s household names in Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao but was quick to praise both following his losses, something which Ward thinks Froch can learn from.

“It’s really sad a champion of his calibre can’t give a guy his just due and say ‘you know what, he was the better man that night’,” said Ward.

“I think the fans would respect him a lot more if he did that, American fans and UK fans. Look at Ricky Hatton, he was that type of guy, he lost and he said ‘no excuses, it was my fault’ and then moved onto the next one,” Ward said.

“I think that’s why Ricky Hatton is so beloved the way he is because he was going to give it his all, 100%, and if it didn’t go right he wasn’t going to make excuses. And that’s what Carl Froch specialises in – making excuses,” he said.

O’Neil bounces back with bloody victory over Woodall; Diekmann, Beekman score impressive wins

MASHANTUCKET, Conn. (Nov. 15th, 2013) – After losing to tough Brazilian Gil de Freitas earlier this summer, Chuck O’Neil needed a change of pace to get back on the winning track.

“I got right back to training camp and began putting those elbows to use,” O’Neil.

Veteran Chris Woodall (12-5) bore the brunt of O’Neil’s frustration Saturday night, absorbing a series of elbows midway through the opening round, the final one opening a nasty gash on Woodall’s forehead and prompting the referee to mercifully stop the bout at the 2-minute, 24-mark second mark in the main event of Classic Entertainment & Sports’ “November To Remember” pro-am card at Foxwoods Resorts Casino’s Fox Theater.

O’Neil (12-6, 4 KOs), a Bridgewater, Mass., native who starred on The Ultimate Fighter reality series several years ago, got off to a quick start in Saturday’s main event, taking Woodall to the canvas within the first 30 seconds. From there, it was a series of unanswered strikes followed by the vicious elbows that subsequently busted Woodall wide open and put an end to the night.

“After my loss, I got right back into training camp and made some improvements,” O’Neil said. “I added some extra muscle. I have a great team and it paid off tonight.”

The evenly-matched co-feature lived up to all the pre-fight hype as Amsterdam, N.Y., veteran Harley Beekman (5-2) got back on track with a hard-fought, unanimous-decision win over former UFC vet Thomas Egan (7-4) of Dorchester, Mass. Beekman won the fight 30-27 on all three scorecards, but it appeared much closer inside the cage until the third and final round when Beekman scored an early takedown and proceeded to wear down Egan over the final four and a half minutes. On his back for the majority of the round, Egan had no answer, though he did an admirable job of sustaining further damage.

“I wanted to stand up with him. He’s a hell of a striker,” said Beekman, who snapped a two-fight losing streak, “but when Plan A doesn’t work you have to go to Plan B.”

Fighting out of Dorchester, Mass., and working with famed boxing coach Peter Welch, featherweight James Murrin (1-0, 1 KO) let his hands do the talking Saturday in his professional debut, peppering fellow newcomer Douglas Monteiro (0-1) of Framingham, Mass., with relentless combinations, opening a vicious gash over Monteiro’s right eye and forcing the ringside physician to stop the bout at the end of the opening round. Utilizing his boxing training, Murrin consistently switched between working the body and landing cleanly upstairs. Monteiro had no answer other than try to attempt a takedown to stem the tide, but Murrin stuffed each attempt and cruised to a near-flawless win.

Looking to snap a two-fight losing streak, Providence flyweight Dan Cormier (2-3) came through swimmingly, defeating newcomer Marvin Maldonado (0-1) of Latham, N.Y., by split decision, 30-27, 30-27, 28-29. Also on the undercard, Meriden, Conn., Willie Brown Jr. (2-0) won for the second time in as many fight, this time exerting his will against the taller, leaner Chaz Dowdell (0-1), defeating the Pittsburgh, Pa., newcomer by submission via the rear-naked choke at the 1:18 minute of the second round.

Asked if submission victories are his new forte, Brown Jr. said, “I just take what they give me.”

In a rematch of one of his few losses as a professional, heavyweight Josh Diekmann (14-5, 10 KOs) of Groton, Conn., made quick work of journeyman Chris Guillen (13-16), stopping the 41-year-old veteran with a series of unanswered strikes at the 1:15 mark of the opening round. Guillen submitted Diekmann in 2007, but was no match for Diekmann this time around, prompting Diekmann to seek yet another rematch during his post-fight celebration.

“I want to thank Chris for coming out here from halfway across the country to give me a rematch. That’s what real men do, not yellow-bellied cowards like Tyler King,” Diekmann said in reference to King, who beat him by unanimous decision in October of 2012.

GARRETT WILSON READY TO SEIZE THE DAY AGAINST CZAR GLAZKOV

VERONA, NY – On just three days’ notice, Philadelphian Garrett Wilson, 13-6-1, 7 KOs, has agreed to take on rising heavyweight prospect Vyacheslav “Czar” Glazkov, 15-0-1, 11 KOs, in a nationally televised 10-rounder at the Turning Stone Casino in Verona, NY. The opportunity came when Galzkov’s original opponent, Tomasz Adamek, was forced to pull out of the bout on short notice due to a stomach virus.

With the fight slated for Saturday afternoon and the chance to perform in front of millions on the NBC network television platform, facing Glazkov amounts to a chance of a lifetime for Wilson. And the fighter known as “The Ultimate Warrior” is ready to make the most of his big break.

“I think this is an excellent opportunity for me to showcase my talent on NBC,” Wilson said. “It’s a gift, and I am going to make the most of it. Everybody will get to see me. It’s amazing!”

Wilson has always been a fighter ready and willing to take on the world. It’s not the first time he’s stepped into the ring on short notice, but this time the stakes – and possible rewards – have never been greater.

“I’ve taken fights on 24-hour notice,” Wilson said. “I took this fight because I like to fight guys who, on paper, look like excellent fighters, and then show that I am better.”

Wilson’s resume includes several upset wins, as well as a few truly spectacular knockouts. If the former USBA & NABF cruiserweight champion can do it again on Saturday afternoon, he will make his mark in the heavyweight division and jump-start his career like never before.

“I’m going to give the fans a show,” Wilson said. “They call me the “Ultimate Warrior”, and this is what I do. I’m always in shape, and I’m always ready for battle. This is the chance I’ve been waiting for and I’m going to show the world who I am.”

The NBC broadcast begins at 2:30 PM with a 10-round showdown between unbeaten lightweights for the USBA Atlantic Coast Region Lightweight Title, Karl “Dynamite” Dargan, 13-0, 7 KOs, and Mike “Lefty” Brooks, 10-0-1, 2 KOs, with the Glazkov-Wilson fight immediately following.
