SUPER MIDDLEWEIGHT KING WARD LOOKS TO CAPITALISE ON UNDEFEATED RODRIGUEZ’S ‘FROCH-LIKE’ EAGERNESS LIVE ON BOXNATION

WARDCut
LONDON (14 Nov) – Boxing’s best super middleweight, Andre Ward, returns to the ring this Saturday following a 14-month layoff, adamant he can take advantage of his opponent’s all guns blazing approach.

The WBA super-middleweight world champion, who also holds The Ring Magazine equivalent, is set to make his eagerly anticipated return this weekend against the undefeated Edwin Rodriguez, after being out of action for over a year due to a shoulder injury.

Fighting in front of his native Californian crowd at Citizens Business Bank Arena in Ontario, the 29-year-old is out to show there is little in the way of ring rust and that the sparkle which saw him overcome Chad Dawson so comprehensively in his last outing, back in September 2012, very much remains.

He goes into the bout against the tricky Rodriguez knowing it’s not an easy assignment for his first fight back but intends to use his past experiences against similarly styled opponents to his advantage.

“We’re going to execute the gameplan and going to let it unfold, and if it unfolds the way it’s supposed to, he definitely can be stopped,” said Ward, speaking exclusively to BoxNation.

“He’s never been 12 rounds before and he makes a lot of mistakes. His eagerness is his strength but it’s also his weakness, similar to Froch. He doesn’t regard his defence, he’s reckless at times but if you’re reckless you can be caught out,” he said.

“Edwin’s a good fighter, he’s undefeated, he’s a hungry challenger but he’s also dealing with a hungry champion. So you’ve got to look at that side too. I’ve not just got to deal with him, he’s got to deal with me,” Ward said.

The 28-year-old Rodriguez, from the Dominican Republic, has built up a notable record with 24 wins from 24 fights with an impressive 16 stoppages.

It is not so much the record which concerns Ward, who himself remains undefeated, but rather his opponent’s desire to seize his chance under the spotlight.

“I don’t think its just being an undefeated fighter but the fact that it’s his opportunity. I had my opportunity in 2009, now it’s his chance and you can’t underestimate his mindset going into the fight,” Ward stated.

“But at the same time you’re not dealing with some guy, speaking of myself, who’s underestimating this kid or doesn’t know who he’s fighting. I’m well aware of Rodriguez’s strengths, and his weaknesses.

“At this level you want to take away your opponents strengths and expose their weaknesses and that’s what I’m planning on doing,” he said.

Ward’s return to the ring on BoxNation continues a majestic next couple of months for the channel which has secured the world’s biggest bouts live and exclusive all the way up until Christmas.

Featured over the next few weeks will be Manny Pacquiao against Brandon Rios, Dereck Chisora and Nathan Cleverly, as they take part in their respective bouts at the Copper Box Arena. Plus, Paulie Malignaggi vs. Zab Judah, Adrien Broner against Argentine axe man Marcos Maidana and many, many more big names.

Ward vs. Rodriguez is live and exclusive on BoxNation (Sky Ch. 437/Virgin Ch. 546) from 2am this Sunday morning. Visit www.boxnation.com to subscribe.

FREDDIE ROACH MEDIA CONFERENCE CALL TRANSCRIPT

Good morning America and good evening to World-Famous Freddie Roach because it is 11 PM in General Santos City in the Philippines. It is very gracious of him to join us – he has a 4:30 AM run with Manny Thursday morning.

We are just 10 days from Macau – Manny Pacquiao and Brandon Rios in a 12-round welterweight battle which will be headlining a live five-bout pay-per-view card on November 23 beginning at 9 PM ET / 6 PM PT. Also joining us on the call is Hall of Fame Promoter Bob Arum who is in Las Vegas.

BOB AUM: I just got up, but listen, I’m in better shape than Freddie because he is ready to go to bed – he has to get up early in the morning. So I am not going to waste any time – I’ll give it back to you.

FREDDIE ROACH: Training camp has been going great. We have been sparring very well. We have six rounds to spar tomorrow and four rounds on Saturday then we are going to head to Macau Monday afternoon after training. We are 90% ready. We have the game plan down. We know how we are going to fight Brandon Rios. He’s a taller guy and we have been watching the tapes of his last 10 fights. We have a great game plan and Manny knows how to fight this fighter and I believe it’s going to be a great night for the Philippines.

Freddie, I understand you gave Manny the day off today, is he looking that good?

FREDDIE ROACH: He is doing really good. He had a great run in the morning. He did a lot of sprints and had a great run. When he came into the gym, he looked a little tired and I said, “you know Manny, you can take the day off. Go home and get some rest.” I think what has happened here is weighing on his mind so I gave him the day off since he had the great run and we can pick it back up tomorrow.

Do you have heightened anticipation since Manny is coming off back-to-back losses?

FREDDIE ROACH: I think it is a situation where he has to look impressive in this fight and we are doing everything possible to do that. We have Manny’s mind on the right path I believe. He knows he has to look impressive in the fight and he knows Brandon Rios is coming off of a loss also. We can’t give into him at all in this fight.

After watching what Ruslan Provodnikov has done to his opponents, how do you feel about the rough sparring sessions Manny had with him?

FREDDIE ROACH: He always did real well and Manny handles Ruslan in the beginning of the sparring. But then Ruslan, of course, learned how to fight Manny. It was great work for both guys and I don’t think it was too hard on Manny. We had two sparring partners, four actually, but two left. We have had tough guys because Rios is a tough kid. We cut the sparring down quite a bit – we average about 150 rounds but now we do 110 – we didn’t need the wear and tear at this point in his career.

So the typhoon did not touch you guys. Has Manny been thinking about this great tragedy and has it affected training?

FREDDIE ROACH: Training has been going well and he’s trying to keep his focus on boxing but I did talk to Manny today about it and on Sunday we took some trainers and other fighters down to visit the kids in Baguio, but for him to go down there now, it’s way too close to the fight and he needs to buckle down and stay in the gym for the moment.

How do you feel Rios will be in the fight? Do you still feel he will charge forward?

FREDDIE ROACH: The more I see of Rios in the tapes the better I feel. He’s just a tough guy and tough guys don’t win fights. Manny can outbox him and he can do it with ease.

Have you seen anything in camp that would show you he has slipped a little bit? To put the knockout behind him?

FREDDIE ROACH: He has definitely put the knockout behind him. Manny Pacquiao knows that the knockout is part of the sport. He realizes that if you aren’t able to handle the knockout you picked the wrong sport. He is totally recovered and is brave as ever in the ring. We had a good session on Tuesday – we went eight-rounds with two tough guys – one a little bit bigger and one a little bit stronger – and Manny’s doing great.

What do you say to the skeptics that say this is the end for Manny Pacquiao?

FREDDIE ROACH: Well, Manny was fighting one of the best fights he has fought in a long time. At the time he fell into the punch- those things happen. Whether it was a lucky punch, Marquez was throwing a lot of punches. The thing, in that fight, if Manny had waited one second more, Manny was going to win that fight by knockout. Nothing carried over. Manny has looked great in training. I know people are skeptical about him but knockouts are what they are. Manny Pacquiao is a realist. He understands it is part of the sport. He’s been knocked out twice before – I remember him showing me the tapes when we first started working together and I said, “I don’t want to see those knockouts. You know what happened.” So he accepts that and I don’t think it’s going to affect him AT ALL. But we probably won’t know until the fight.

Do you feel it is overblown? Everyone except the judges thought Manny beat Bradley then the one punch against Marquez. We could be sitting here saying Manny won his last two fights…

FREDDIE ROACH: Definitely. That’s why I don’t think it will bother him any. He does realize that it is part of the sport. To be honest with you, when I was knocked out for the first time, it changed my whole career, because I was never as brave as Manny. I loft my self confidence. But Manny is not like me. Manny is a realist and he accepts it. I know everybody doesn’t think the same way, but since he accepts it, it doesn’t bother him.

Can you talk about the time difference?

FREDDIE ROACH: Well, we get up early in the morning and we are running then we train in the afternoon and we are getting him used to having two meals before the fight and I think that’s a big factor, as long as he gets those two meals in him it shouldn’t be too much of a problem. We’ll be ready to fight. We are in the same time zone as China, in the Philippines so we don’t have to worry about that change. We do get up at 4 o’clock in the morning and we’re on the road by 4:30. We get a meal in him in the morning then a small lunch before the afternoon workout and it’s been working out really well.

As a Congressman, has the disaster distracted Manny even though it was not near, has he gotten calls? Meetings or conference calls?

FREDDIE ROACH: We have had a lot of calls about the tragedy of course. We talk about it in the gym a little bit with the other trainers and taking the people down like we did in Baguio. He told me he wanted to go down on Sunday but it’s too close to the fight for him to take any time off and we talked about that. He is focused on the fight still but obviously it is a big distraction because it killed all of those people. We do talk about it in the gym – about how many people got killed in the storm and how many more have been affected. He is concerned about it yes, very much, but I think we have him pretty much on track on the fight. He knows it’s a big fight and he knows it’s a must-win situation and it’s bigger than that because he has to win for the country also, not just his boxing career, he knows he has to win for the people and he told me that yesterday. They seem to be inspiring each other.

What was the weather in General Santos City during the storm?

FREDDIE ROACH: It was very unusual. It was sunny and hot. We got a little bit of rain that evening but that was it – no wind. It didn’t come in our direction at all.

You had said there would be fewer distractions training in General Santos City, how as that worked out?

FREDDIE ROACH: We have a nice gym and we tried to close it down but there are a lot of people that try to slip in and we had a lot more relatives this week than we did last. The people still love to see Manny Pacquiao. We work out on the third floor of a building and they have big windows and a lot of people watch from the streets to get a glimpse of Manny moving around the ring and so forth. But as far as politics go, those people didn’t come until the storm hit the other day. Of course that was tragic and Manny does care about people and he’s been doing all he can from here but for the fight though, up until that point, we had a very good training camp and we probably haven’t had as many people in the gym as we have in Hollywood, but there have been a lot of reporters but that comes with being a big-time boxer. We do the best we can and the closer the fight gets the more we have to work on that.

How difficult is it for you to be far away from your other fighters – Martirosyan and Provodnikov – who had recent fights?

FREDDIE ROACH: I tried as best that I could to work with my assistant and he did a great job with them. Both fighters are very close to Manny. Manny will be real happy to see them and they are both coming to the fight. For people that were saying I was washed up, I think we are going to have three wins in a row and I will be in contention for Trainer of the Year – and Fighter of the Year – again. The thing is, Manny is in great shape for this fight. I expect big things out of Manny in this fight.

Alvarado became more of a boxer in his second fight, a win, against Rios. Is that something you pick up on?

FREDDIE ROACH: Of course, I watch a lot of tapes. When you fight a taller guy you fight much different that when you fight a shorter guy and Manny is a bit shorter so I have to depend on how he fights us so he will throw more uppercuts against a shorter guy. The first fight obviously he looked great and he stopped him. In the second fight he got outboxed and I told Manny, “That’s how you beat this guy, you outbox him. You don’t trade with this guy. You just weave in and out and the fight will be easy.’” We have the game plan down perfectly. I know he is a tough guy but tough guys don’t win fights. Good boxers win fights.

Do you know who the officials will be for this fight?

FREDDIE ROACH: I got the list from Mike Koncz the other day and I am familiar with all three, all four, and we have no problem with the judges. I don’t remember the names but I am happy with all of them.

Does the fact that Alvarado beat Rios and Provodnikov beat up Alvarado and Provodnikov sparred with Manny bode well for Manny?

FREDDIE ROACH: Manny and Ruslan sparred together and are good friends. When they sparred it was great work for each other. Neither would get beat up and I would never let that happen. Manny got the best of Ruslan and obviously he’s a tough kid and a very strong puncher but Manny has been sparring with bigger guys for this because Rios is going to be a little bit bigger but it’s the first time he’ll be fighting at 147 but he was a fat guy and did have to lose weight. He’s moving up to 147 and still had to lose weight. That tells you what kind of discipline he has and I think we are going to take advantage of that.

How do you think the fight will go and how long do you think it will go?

FREDDIE ROACH: I think Manny is going to outbox him and knock him out inside six rounds.

Would you have the retirement discussion if he wins but struggles?

FREDDIE ROACH: I think Manny will outbox this guy and end the fight early – he has more speed and power but that all depends on how the fight goes. If Manny boxes a good fight and does well and he gets a bad decision then we’d have to sit down and talk about it. But it’s really hard to say until we see the fight. If I see he is slowing down and slipping in the fight I will be the first one to tell him. We have an agreement that I will tell him that and he will retire. I don’t see him slipping in the gym at this moment and he’s doing really well. He’s fired up and anxious to get back in the ring and I see good things. If things don’t go well we will talk about retirement and going into politics full time or something like that.

FREDDIE ROACH: Rios was at 135 and had to lose weight. He went to 140 and had to lose weight and now he’s at 147 and has to lose weight. But I am pretty much worried about getting my fighter ready for the fight. Obviously I see clips of Rios training and so forth and he’s wearing clothes to create more sweat all the time and you wonder why he’s wearing that, but that’s not my job. That’s his trainer’s job so I don’t worry about that.

What do you do next after a win?

FREDDIE ROACH: We wanted to fight Marquez but Marquez refused to fight us. We want Marquez one more time, yes. That’s the fight we want. Mayweather too of course, but Marquez, he got lucky and we want to take that back.

In Closing…

FREDDIE ROACH: Manny is in great shape and we are ready to fight right now at this moment. Right now he is below weight by a little bit. He was on weight a month before the fight and Rios wasn’t but we’ll see him in the ring and see who the best boxer is.

Fighting in one of the two main bouts of the Ulrich Knockout Promotions, Warriors Boxing and 8 Count Productions event, entitled “World Championship Boxing: Wlodarczyk vs. Fragomeni 3”, Fonfara will face La Habra, California, via Colombia KO artist Samuel Miller (26-7, 23 KOs).

34-year-old Miller is a former WBC United States (USNBC) Middleweight Champion who has faced a long list of top contenders. The dangerous puncher carries a 70% KO percentage against better-than-average competition.

A puncher like Samuel Miller is never more than one shot away from winning a fight and Andrzej knows that. This is a very dangerous fight for him while he has so much at stake that he wins.”

25-year-old Fonfara, Chicago’s Polish Prince, is currently the IBF #1, WBO #2 and WBC #7-ranked contender. A native of Warsaw, Poland, and a long-time Chicago fan favorite since turning professional in 2006, he is riding high on a 15-bout unbeaten streak and known for his fight-ending power. Fonfara most recently stopped former world champion Gabriel Campillo on August 16 to reach the mandatory contender position in the IBF.

Gingras hopes to seize opportunity of a lifetime

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (Nov. 13th, 2013) — When Rich Gingras traveled to Singapore five years to compete on Season 4 of the reality television series The Contender, he purposely chose the dorm room with the photo of Season 1 finalist and fellow New Englander Peter Manfredo Jr. hanging on the wall.

“My bed was right under his picture,” Gingras recalled. “It was like I had a piece of home with me.”

Now Gingras is trying to defeat, not emulate, his idol as he prepares for the most important fight of his life, a 10-round showdown against Manfredo Jr. in the main event of “Power & Pride,” presented by Jimmy Burchfield’s Classic Entertainment & Sports on Friday, Nov. 22, 2013 at Twin River Casino.

A fight like this never seemed possible five years ago, not when Gingras was campaigning as a cruiserweight, tipping the scales at nearly 200 pounds each fight. At the time, Gingras (13-3-1, 8 KOs) had just 10 professional fights under his belt while Manfredo Jr. (39-7, 20 KOs), an eight-year veteran, was closing in on a world-title showdown against Sakio Bika.

Times have changed, mostly for Gingras, who has not only slimmed down to super middleweight, but has steadily become one of the most respected, feared fighters in New England thanks in large part to his win over veteran Joe Gardner in May and his controversial draw against Providence’s Vladine Biosse in July. Manfredo Jr. is still the toast of the town, “The Pride Of Providence,” a nickname he earned long before Vinny Paz passed the torch a decade ago.

Next Friday will be his toughest test in years; Gingras is, for lack of a better term, a brawler who will press Manfredo Jr. from start to finish. Under the guidance of new trainer Orlondo Valles, who also worked with him in his previous fight against Biosse, Gingras just might be in the best shape of life, setting the stage for what could Rhode Island’s most memorable fight of the year, a fitting end to the 2013 Twin River Fight Series.

“It’s huge,” Gingras said. “Any time your name is in the same sentence as Peter Manfredo’s, it brings you to that same level. He’s an icon in Rhode Island.

“People weren’t sure who I was before, but they’re starting to figure it out now. I used to get nervous before fights. Now I’m enjoying it. I’m enjoying the attention.”

There’s no title on the line next Friday, just bragging rights, which his fine for now because being the top dog in Rhode Island might mean more to Gingras than winning a championship. One could liken it to the cart-before-the-horse theory; before Gingras can focus on climbing the rankings and competing for championships, he must first clean house in his own back yard. No one rules the roost quite like Manfredo Jr., making next Friday’s main-event showdown the opportunity of a lifetime for the former cruiserweight contender.

“It’s weird how this has all come full-circle,” Gingras said. “Peter and I are still friends. We texted one another after our photo shoot before the fight. It was a funny conversation. We have a lot of respect for each other.

“This fight is like the Rhode Island championship to me,” he continued. “It should be bigger than anything. To tell you the truth, it’s more of a personal goal than anything. I thought about fighting him a year ago, but I wasn’t sure I was ready. I remember watching him on The Contender before I had my first amateur fight. I never thought I’d be fighting him when I was walking around at cruiserweight.”

Aside from the recent wins and his transition from cruiserweight to super middleweight, the biggest, most positive, change for Gingras has been working with Valles. Gingras was somewhat of a nomad prior to hooking up with Valles, working with different trainers who didn’t put in as much effort or do the necessary homework Gingras needed leading up to a fight.

“I had absolutely no video work with previous camp,” Gingras said. “Now Orlondo handles it for me.

“Myself, I don’t watch a lot of it now. It’s too distracting. Just like when Orlondo asks he, ‘How’s your weight?’ and I tell him, ‘Don’t worry about it. That’s my job!’ I’m sure he’s not used to that. A lot of these guys need to be babysat. Not me. I’m a pro.”

Gingras and Valles only had three weeks to work together before Gingras’ fight against Biosse in July. Since then, they’ve been in the gym for the past three and a half months, kicking it up a notch in September once the fight with Manfredo Jr. became official.

“We’ve almost been working too much,” Gingras admitted. “I was back in the gym a week and a half after the Biosse fight. I just had to adjust my regimen. I was running eight miles once or twice a week, doing box jumps and sprints. I’ve cut that out now, and now it’s straight boxing, period. I’m not even running.

“Orlondo tightens everything up for me. He fine-tunes everything. He’s been watching those videos picking up on the tendencies. Regardless of what a fighter does, he always goes back to those specific moves. We’re working on shutting those down.”

Based off the limited video he and Valles have watched, Gingras thinks he has Manfredo’s style down to a T; it’s the exact opposite of what Gingras will bring to the table next Friday.

“Peter likes to control the pace,” Gingras said. “He likes to work when he wants to work, but I’m a control freak, so he’ll work when I want him to work.

“I don’t want to be disrespectful, but the last couple of opponents he faced [Rayco Saunders in November and Walter Wright in March] were perfect for his style. That’s why they were picked. Peter likes to move his feet a bit – go to his left, then go to his right. He keeps everyone at the end of his jab to set up his right hand.

“Me, I’m going to spend a lot of time with my head in his armpits.”

In other words, Gingras plans on bringing the pressure early and often, which makes this main event an interesting contrast in styles in addition to a battle to see who can impose his will. And if it happens to be Gingras, he could walk away next Friday with something more valuable than a championship belt.

“I’ve thought about it a lot. I think about it more than anything else,” he said. “If I win this fight, Rhode Island will begin to recognize me. People will start paying attention.

“The possibilities are endless.”

Ticket for the event are priced at $46, $61, $101 and $161 (VIP) and can be purchased by calling 401-724-2253/2254, online at www.cesboxing.com or www.ticketmaster.com, or at Players Club at Twin River. All fights and fighters are subject to change.

“Pride & Power” also features the return of former four-time world champion “Hurricane” Jaime Clampitt (21-5-1, 7 KOs) of Warwick, R.I., who will face Dominga Olivo (8-8-1) of Brooklyn, N.Y., in the six-round lightweight co-feature, ending a three-year layoff. The undercard also features a special six-round heavyweight attraction with “The Armenian Assassin” Arthur Saribekian (23-4-1, 18 KOs) returning to the ring for the first time in more than a decade to face Hyannis, Mass., product Jesse Barboza (6-1-1, 4 KOs).

Also on the undercard, Cranston, R.I., welterweight Nick DeLomba (2-0) will put his undefeated record on the line against Carlos Hernandez (3-2-1, 2 KOs) of Bridgeport, Conn., in a six-round bout and Providence middleweight KJ Harrison-Lombardi (2-0-1) will return to Twin River in a four-round bout against Mike Rodriguez of Springfield, Mass., who will be making his professional debut. Harrison-Lombardi and Rodriguez faced one another in the amateurs with Rodriguez winning a close decision. Providence light middleweight Publio Pena (1-0, 1 KO) will face Antonio Marrero (0-1) of Hartford, Conn., in a four-round bout. All fights and fighters are subject to change.

Brent Knopp Headlines CageSport XXVIII: Middleweight Title on the Line

Tacoma, WA (November 13th, 2013) – Halquist Productions’ CageSport MMA will be returning once again to the Emerald Queen Casino on December 7th for another round of professional MMA. Headlining CageSport XXVIII is Brent “Mankill” Knopp who will attempt to defend his middleweight title against StrikeForce veteran, Cory Devela.

Tickets for CageSport XXVIII, scheduled for Saturday, December 7th are available and can be purchased at the Emerald Queen Casino box office or through Ticketmaster. Prices start at $35. Fans are encouraged to buy tickets early as CageSport MMA has become the hottest ticket in northwest combative sports.

Middleweight champion, Knopp (4-0), has run through the Northwest middleweight class, keeping his record perfect while finishing all of his opponents before the third round. He acquired the title back in February with a first round TKO victory over Darrio Mobley in what was a rematch between the two where Knopp defeated Mobley via second round TKO in their first meeting.

Training out of AMC Pankration in Kirkland, Knopp is surrounded by some of the best in the sport of MMA. Founder and head trainer of the gym, Matt Hume has gained a reputation around the world as one of the premier coaches in the sport. He has or currently trains numerous UFC fighters including flyweight champion, Demetrious Johnson. Hume’s guidance will be crucial to Knopp as he will undoubtedly be facing the toughest opponent of his career at CageSport XXVIII.

Cory Devela (9-5), living in Puyallup and training out of Dennis Hallman’s Victory Athletics gym in Lakewood, returned to the cage in August after a three year layoff and dominated. In the semi-main event of CageSport XXVII, Devela took on Byron Sutton (7-4) in a scheduled three round contest, but only three minutes to take home the victory with a TKO finish. Immediately after the fight, promoter, Brian Halquist, stepped into the cage with Knopp and asked Devela if he was interested in challenging Knopp for the title in which he said yes. Contracts were signed and the fight was on.

In the featured bout of the evening, Issaquah’s Amy Cadwell will take her undefeated record into the cage against California’s Maria Andraverde (1-2) in a three round women’s fight. Cadwell is coming off an impressive win at CageSport XXVII where she was able to secure a rear naked choke late into the third round over Hadley Griffith. The preliminary undercard can be seen on the CageSport MMA Facebook page under the event: CageSport XXVIII: Knopp vs. Devela.

Donaire_Rigondeaux_1304013_001a
ATLANTIC CITY (November 13, 2013) — Undefeated World Boxing Association (WBA) / World Boxing Organization (WBO) 122-pound world champion and Cuban sensation GUILLERMO “El Chacal” RIGONDEAUX returns to the ring fresh from his career-best victory. Rigondeaux will be bidding for Fighter of the Year honors when he defends his unified titles against former two-time world champion JOSEPH “King Kong” AGBEKO, Saturday, December 7, at Boardwalk Hall’s Adrian Phillips Ballroom in Atlantic City. The card will be televised live on HBO Boxing After Dark® beginning at 9:45 p.m. ET/PT. The live telecast will also feature local favorite GLEN “Jersey Boy” TAPIA risking his Top-10 rating and undefeated record in a 10-round junior middleweight battle against knockout artist JAMES KIRKLAND and three-time world title challenger MATTHEW MACKLIN in a 10-round middleweight rumble against undefeated contender LAMAR RUSS.

These six gladiators boast a combined record of 135-10, 96 KOs — a winning percentage of 93% and a victory by knockout ratio of 71%.

Promoted by Top Rank®, in association with Caesars Atlantic City, Caribe Promotions, SMS Promotions, DiBella Entertainment and Tecate, tickets to the Rigondeaux vs. Agbeko world championship event go on sale Tomorrow! Thursday, November 14, at Noon ET. Priced at $200, $100. $50 and $25, plus applicable service charges, tickets can be purchased at Boardwalk Hall box office, all Ticketmaster locations and online at www.ticketmaster.com. To charge by phone call 800-736-1420.

“After a brilliant performance against Nonito Donaire, Rigondeaux puts his extraordinary skills to test on December 7 against Joseph Agbeko,” said Todd duBoef, president of Top Rank. “This bout epitomizes the contrast of style of slick boxer versus brawler. Which style will prevail?”

“On December 7, fans will see some of the fight game’s purest boxing and punching at its most distilled,” says Peter Nelson, director of programming, HBO Sports. “The Boardwalk in Atlantic City is the perfect home for three such intriguing match-ups.”

“I’m very excited to get back in the ring,” said Rigondeaux. “Joseph Agbeko is a great champion, and I believe all fans will be pleased with the type of performance we will both exhibit to end a great year of boxing. I believe Agbeko will come prepared, ready to engage and be very aggressive. We will both showcase our skills, and I am very pleased to have the opportunity to end 2013 the way I opened it up, with surprise and pure boxing class for the world to see. I would like to thank HBO, my promoters Top Rank and Caribe promotions, my manager Gary Hyde, advisor Alex Bornote, trainers Ramon Garbey, Joel Casamayor, Pedro Luis, and all those that have a part in making this fight happen.”

“This is going to be a great fight. I’m extremely motivated. I plan to make my country proud by becoming world champion again after I defeat Rigondeaux,” declared Agbeko.

“I’ve been waiting for this opportunity my whole life. Now that it’s here it’s time for me to show the world that I’m here to stay. This is just the beginning,” said Tapia.

“Tapia hasn’t fought anyone near my level. I’m going for the knockout,” said Kirkland.

“I am looking forward to getting back in the ring and back to my winning ways,” said Macklin. “I’ve seen a few of Russ’ fights and he’s very sharp, very skilled and he’s always in exciting fights as am I. This should be a great fight for the fans both in Atlantic City and those watching on HBO. A big win against Lamar will set me up nicely for a big 2014.”

“This is great opportunity for me and my team,” said Russ. “I want it to be known to the fans and to Macklin that on December 7th I am coming to fight and I am coming to win.”

“We are delighted that Joseph Agbeko has stepped up to the plate by challenging Rigo for his WBA and WBO world titles and we are looking forward to putting on a “master class performance” against little Joe December 7th,” said Gary Hyde, Rigondeaux’s manager.

“Joseph Agbeko is a great warrior in the tradition of African fighters like Azumah Nelson. He’s coming for the title and plans to lay it all on the line. He’s a legitimate danger to Rigondeaux,” said Frank Espinoza, Agbeko’s manager.

“I’d like to thank Top Rank and HBO for giving Glen this opportunity,” said Tapia’s manager Pat Lynch. “I know it’s something he’s worked really hard for. It’s going to be a great fight and Glen will not disappoint his fans on December 7.”

“Kirkland brings all-out aggression into the ring. He’s strong, powerful and exciting,” said Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson, of SMS Promotions.

“Macklin-Russ should be a barnburner between two fighters who can bang,” said Lou DiBella, Macklin’s promoter. “The fight means so much to both boxers that it can’t help but be a good one and we are happy that it is on such a high quality card in Atlantic City.”

“We know that Russ will come to fight but we are very confident in Matt’s skills and experience and know those two assets will put us back into the win column,” said Macklin’s advisor Anthony Catanzaro.

“Caesars Atlantic City’s commitment to sponsoring some of the top sporting events on the East Coast is no more evident than with this December 7th HBO triple header set for historic Boardwalk Hall,” said Kevin Ortzman, Senior Vice President and General Manager of Caesars, Bally’s, and Showboat Atlantic City. “As a boxing fan, I’m particularly looking forward to the Tapia v. Kirkland bout. Given Tapia’s New Jersey roots and his quick growing reputation as an up and comer, this match already possesses a great storyline and will certainly be a high energy affair.”

Rigondeaux (12-0, 8 KOs), of Miami, Fla., returns to the ring after unifying the titles by defeating 2012 Fighter of the Year Nonito Donaire on April 13 at a sold-out Radio City Music Hall in New York. Rigondeaux thoroughly dominated Donaire via a unanimous decision victory, ending his 12-year, 30-bout winning streak, as well as claiming his WBO junior featherweight title. Rigondeaux had a stellar amateur career, winning Olympic gold medals in 2004 and 2000, World Amateur Championship titles in 2005 and 2001, and Pan American Games gold medals in 2005 and 2003, all at 119 pounds, before defecting from Cuba and embarking on a professional career which began in Miami in 2009. In only his seventh professional fight where both fighters scored knockdowns, Rigondeaux captured the WBA interim super bantamweight title, winning a tough split decision over the vastly more experienced former world champion Ricardo Cordoba in 2010. After successfully defending the interim title in 2011 with a first-round knockout of previously undefeated former European super bantamweight champion Willie Casey, Rigondeaux won the WBA world super bantamweight championship with a sixth-round knockout of previously undefeated defending champion Rico Ramos on January 20, 2012. Rigondeaux has successfully defended that title thrice since then, blasting once-beaten Teon Kennedy in the fifth round, which included Kennedy suffering five knockdowns en route to the loss, and winning a dominant unanimous decision over once-beaten contender Roberto Marroquin last year, on June 9 and September 15, respectively, and Donaire in their April title unification fight.

Before moving up to the junior featherweight division, Agbeko (29-4, 22 KOs), of Accra, Ghana, was one of the dominant forces of the bantamweight division. He captured his first International Boxing Federation (IBF) bantamweight title just one month removed from his U.S. debut, on September 29, 2007, knocking out defending champion Luis Perez in the seventh round, ending Perez’s seven-year winning streak. Agbeko successfully defended the title twice, winning decisions over William Gonzalez and Vic Darchinyan, before losing it to Yonnhy Perez in October 2009. Agbeko avenged that loss and reclaimed the title in their rematch 15 months later. His second reign ended in his first defense, August 2011, a majority decision loss to Abner Mares, who also won the rematch in December of that same year. After taking over a year off, Agbeko returned to the ring last March 22, and defeated Luis Melendez to capture the IBO bantamweight title. Agbeko will be training with Roger Mayweather for his upcoming world title challenge.

Tapia (20-0, 12 KOs), of Passaic, NJ, will be fighting for the fifth time this year, only the second time he has fought this much in a calendar year. And why not? Tapia has starched three of the four opponents he has faced so far this year, with the highlight being his nationally-televised eighth-round knockout of undefeated Abie Han, in July, to capture the vacant NABO junior middleweight title. He returns to the ring fresh from knocking out Elco Garcia in the fifth round on September 28, in Atlantic City. Tapia is currently world-rated No. 9 and No. 10, by the WBO and IBF, respectively.

Promoted by rap star 50 Cent’s SMS Promotions, Kirkland (31-1, 27 KOs), of Austin, TX, returns to the ring after a 21-month hiatus spent dealing with legal issues. The two-fisted wrecking machine has acquired 11 of his last 12 victories by knockout dating back to 2007 and his victory by knockout ratio is an incredible 87%. Prominent victories on his resume include Alfredo Angulo, Carlos Molina, Joel Julio and Bryan Vera.

Macklin (29-5, 20 KOs), of Birmingham, England, has collected Irish, British and European middleweight and junior middleweight titles since making his pro debut in 2001. His steady rise up the ratings matched by his impressive victories earned him his first title shot, against WBA middleweight titlist Felix Sturm in 2011, in the defending champion’s backyard, Cologne, Germany. Macklin took it to Sturm from the opening bell but came up short on the judges’ scorecards, losing a split decision that many observers thought reeked of “home cooking” in favor of the out-gunned Sturm His performance earned him two more title fights, against middleweight champions Sergio Martinez and Gennady Golovkin, losing to both by stoppage.

Russ (14-0, 7 KOs), of Wilmington, NC, has twice served as WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin’s lead sparring partner in previous training camps. Career highlights include spectacular back-to-back knockout victories over Jose Alonzo and Jonathan Cepeda, who boasted a combined record of 25-0 when Russ fought them in 2012. A graduate of Fayetteville State University with a degree in Business Administration, Russ has taken care of business in 2013 winning all three bouts by unanimous decision.

Lance Palmer replaces Rick Glenn, faces Georgi Karakhanyan for World Series of Fighting featherweight title

LAS VEGAS, (Nov. 13, 2013) – Georgi “Insane” Karakhanyan (22-3-1) will still compete for World Series of Fighting’s inaugural featherweight title, but he’ll face a new opponent, Lance “Unstoppable” Palmer (7-0), an impressive young fighter whose addition makes this new championship matchup just as exciting as the originally planned bout.

Rick “The Gladiator” Glenn (14-2-1) withdrew from the World Series of Fighting 7 bout due to personal reasons.

“We wish Rick Glenn all the best and know that he still has a very bright future ahead of him in our promotion,” World Series of Fighting President Ray Sefo said.

World Series of Fighting recently signed a multi-fight deal with Palmer, who now meets Karakhanyan to determine the promotion’s first 145-pound champion.

Karakhanyan and Palmer meet in the five-round, co-main event of next month’s “World Series of Fighting 7: Johnson vs. Kyle” event, which takes place Dec. 7 at PNE Agrodome in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. The night’s main card airs live on NBCSN at 9 p.m. ET/6 p.m. PT, following prelims that stream live on World Series of Fighting’s official website, WSOF.com.

Tickets for World Series of Fighting 7, which start at just $29, and are available at TicketLeader.ca.

Palmer is a former four-time All-American collegiate wrestler at Ohio State University. A member of California’s famed Team Alpha Male, Palmer currently trains alongside MMA standouts Urijah Faber, Joseph Benavidez, Chad Mendes, Danny Castillo and T.J. Dillashaw, among others. Palmer made his professional debut in 2011 and remains undefeated through his first seven contests, including a recent decision win that saw him claim the Resurrection Fighting Alliance featherweight title.

“I’m very excited to start this next chapter of my career,” said Palmer. “To be able to come in and fight for a title in a top promotion is a great honor, and I’m looking forward to putting on a great show for the fans.”

Meanwhile, Karakhanyan brings an eight-fight win streak to the matchup. The 28-year-old Millennia MMA fighter, who was born in Russia but now makes his home in Southern California, turned pro in 2006 and has since racked up 22 wins, including 12 submission victories and another four by knockout. He debuted for World Series of Fighting in September, scoring an impressive first-round submission win over Waylon Lowe, who had won his previous four fights by knockout.

“It is unfortunate that Rick had to pull out of the fight,” said Karakhanyan. “As professional, my job is to adapt and be prepared for anything and everything. I’m really excited to fight. Don’t matter who it is, I just want to fight. Lance Palmer is a tough opponent, and I’m looking forward to beating him for the belt!”

The winner of the Karakhanyan vs. Palmer matchup will join recently crowned welterweight champion Steve Carl as the first two title holders on the World Series of Fighting roster.

Arce to battle Carmona

Arce_Vazquez_110507_001a
According to Dan Rafael of espn.com, former world champion Jorge Arce will fight Jose Carmona in a Featherweight bout this Saturday night in Mexico.

Nielsen closes in on world title shot / Guinness officially accepts world record attempt

WBA & WBO Intercontinental Middleweight Champion Patrick Nielsen (20-0, 9 KOs) and Jose Pinzon (24-5, 15 KOs) today came face-to-face for the first time at the official press conference at MusikTeatret Albertslund. Their clash will be the main event of Saturday´s Nordic Fight Night. “I will take the fight to Nielsen,” Pinzon promised. “We have a great boxing heritage, a great tradition in Mexico, and my style is very Mexican. I am aggressive and come forward a lot. From studying Nielsen I think I can say that we are quite similar, we both like to go forward. Styles make fights and this one will be entertaining.”

Nielsen will be fighting in his home city of Albertslund for the first time of his professional career. “I don´t feel additional pressure,” he said. “If anything, the homecoming gives me more energy because I am around the people I like and love. I can only benefit from fighting at home. I´ll just go out, do my job and beat my opponent.”

Promoter Nisse Sauerland believes that Pinzon is the final obstacle between the 22-year-old Dane and a title fight in 2014. “This is a big night for Patrick,” he stated. “He has progressed very well in 2013 so if he wraps up the year in style he will fight for a world title in 2014. Fingers crossed that all goes well, Pinzon is a strong opponent. Mexicans always come to fight. Pinzon is aggressive and will go to war with Patrick.”

Said coach Joey Gamache: “Patrick got all the tools to be successful – and he will need them against Pinzon. I´ve seen his fights, he´s a strong, durable opponent. Patrick will have to be at the top of his game to beat him.”

Meanwhile, the Guinness Book of Records has officially accepted Team Sauerland´s attempt to break the world record for fan noise. “We´ve brought some 2000 ear plugs with us,” Sauerland said. “We´ll have everything we need to get our names in the record books – a great venue, a crazy crowd and fantastic fights. The atmosphere will be sensational on Saturday.”

Patrick´s brother Micki Nielsen will also be in action, fighting Bjoern Blaschke from Germany. Dennis Ceylan will be looking to expand his unbeaten streak when he takes on Edgar Torres from Mexico. Tickets are available at www.billetnet.dk.

RED ALERT! BRANDON RIOS LANDS IN MACAU.

Pacquiao_Rios_LA3
MACAU, CHINA (November 13, 2013) — Former world champion BRANDON “Bam Bam” RIOS and his team, headed up by Trainer of the Year Robert Garcia, arrived at The Venetian Macao® earlier today with one mission on their minds — BEAT MANNY PACQUIAO!

“I’m in China baby!” exclaimed Rios as he was greeted at the resort’s VIP Entrance. “I worked hard in camp, have a great team, Robert Garcia will be in my corner on the night of my fight. I’m totally prepared and I will win.”

Rios (31-1-1, 22 KOs), of Oxnard, Calif., will train daily at The Venetian Macao’s gym beginning Thursday morning.

“I also know China fans will be rooting for me,” added Rios. “They told me that the last time I was here for our media tour, when Pacquiao and I raced up the stairs of the Great Wall. I beat him then and I will beat him on November 23. It’s great to be back here. I am ready to retire Manny Pacquiao. Victory will be mine.”

Rios and Fighter of the Decade Pacquiao (54-5-2, 38 KOs), the lone congressional representative from the Sarangani province of the Philippines, collide in a 12-round welterweight rumble on Saturday, November 23 at The Venetian Macao’s Cotai Arena™. Promoted by Top Rank and Sands China Ltd., in association with MP Promotions, Tecate, Warner Bros. Pictures “Grudge Match” and Eva Airlines, the five-bout Pacquiao vs. Rios welterweight event will be produced and distributed live by HBO Pay-Per-View®, beginning at 9:00 p.m. ET / 6:00 p.m. PT.

For Pacquiao, this marks the pound-for-pound box office monarch’s first fight outside the U.S. since his 12-round super featherweight unanimous decision victory over former world champion Oscar Larios in 2006, which took place in the Philippines. Rios, one of boxing’s most exciting fighters, has only fought outside the U.S. twice, in México, winning a 10-round split decision over Ricardo Dominguez and knocking out Daniel Valenzuela in the second round in 2008 and 2009, respectively. .

HOLLYWOOD, Fla. (November 12, 2013) – Mexican invader Norberto “Demonio” Gonzalez (20-2, 13 KOs) upset hometown favorite Michael “The Brazilian Rocky” Oliveira (21-2, 16 KOs) in the main event of tonight’s “Knockout Night at Hard Rock Live” card, presented by MO Productions, at Hard Rock Live at Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Hollywood, Florida.

Gonzalez’ quick hands overcame Oliviera’s power for a unanimous 10-round decision (97-91, 97-91, 96-92) victory in a very entertaining fight. Oliveira dropped Gonzalez in the second round with a right cross, but Gonzalez closed the show in the 10th, sending Oliveira to the canvas. The tough 23-year-old Brazilian, rated No. 7 by the WBA and No. 11 by the WBC, beat the 10-count right before the final bell.

“It’s been quite a few years,” Foreman said about his impressive knockout. “I pray that he’s okay. Now, I’m ready for a 10-round fight.”

Fast-rising Cuban light heavyweight prospect Yunieski “The Diamond” Gonzalez (13-0, 9 KOs) overcame a flash knockdown to stop a game Jinner Guerrero (7-2, 6 KOs) in the eighth round. Gonzalez unloaded a devastating, straight right hand that ended the fight in the eighth round.

Cuban featherweight Hairon “El Maja” Socarras (8-0, 5 KOs) kept his perfect record intact, pitching a six-round shutout for a unanimous decision win against former world title challenger Jhon Alberto Molina (32-27-3, 20 KOs).

Heavyweight Robert Alfonso (3-0), a 2008 Cuban Olympian, remained undefeated, defeating Jamal “Knockout” Woods (3-9-1, 3 KOs) by way of a four-round decision.

Bahamian lightweight Valentino Knowles improved his record to 2-0 with a unanimous four-round decision over Ruben “El Chino” Ozuma (1-1).

San Diego Super Welterweight David Barragan Takes the Long Road!

(San Diego, CA) – Undefeated San Diego super welter David Barragan (6-0-1, 3KOs) has never taken a short cut. Even after suffering a devastating life threatening automobile accident, Barragan decided to take the long road. Coming home from an early run, David along with his father Carlos where struck by a drunk driver in a head-on collision. The young David, a highly decorated amateur who won his first national Silver Gloves tournament at thirteen and amassed over 90 amateur fights, was given the choice of fusing his damaged vertebrae and being well in a matter of months or taking the longer and more painful option of letting them heal on their own with the help of a cast. He went with option two.

“It all began with a punching bag in the backyard and bible studies on Friday,” Carlos Barragan Jr., father and trainer of David, answered when asked how the family got involved in boxing. “My father, Carlos Sr., always loved the sport so we decided to help kids in National City, eventually we got a gym in the backyard and it took off from there.”

Undefeated David Barragan of San Diego Photo by Paul Gallegos

With that environment, it was only a question of when David would join the family business. After two months of training at the tender age of eight, David had his first amateur fight in Brawley, CA. He never looked back while collecting trophies and belts including a silver medal at the Junior Olympics in ’05 and participating in the Nationals for the United States and Mexico.
“I’ve traveled a lot, all over the United States and some parts of Mexico, that is one of the things I most like about boxing,” David shared. “I’ve been to Tahiti twice and those where trips of a lifetime. I was invited to an invitational by the southern California USA amateur coach to compete against the Tahitians. I jumped on the chance.”

Turning pro was the next logical step in his career and he did so in late 2011 in Orange County. He scored a quick knockout of John Ferrari who was not quick enough to stay away and went down in two rounds. Four months later, Barragan suffered the only blemish in his ledger with a draw against Marquise Bruce. Taking it slow and looking for the best options unlike many young fighters who take fights without weighing in different options, Barragan took five months to step in a ring again. This time Beau Hamilton was stopped in two and four months scored a unanimous decision over Carl Hill.

A graduate of Sweetwater High School and a business student at a local community college, the twenty-three year old Barragan is co-owner along with his father of the House of Boxing Training Center located in National City. “It’s been a blessing, this is all I know, I have been in gyms all my life. It was an easy choice to open the gym and my dad and grandfather have been a lot of help and together we have built the gym.”

Barragan made his hometown debut on a Bobby D Presents fight card earlier this year with his numerous House of Boxing fan base behind him at the Four Points Sheraton Hotel. “It is very motivating to have my House of Boxing family at the fights but the day of the fight, I’m all business.”

Despite tasting the canvas for the first time in his pro career, Barragan got up and fought on to take a unanimous decision over the tough Jose Martell. Two months later he scored the knock out of the night over Moses Alvizo.

Again in usual Barragan fashion, he took the tough road in his last fight looking for a challenge. Facing a first timer in Matt Dumais, a Canadian amateur stand out training out of the famed Justin Fortune Gym, Barragan dropped him in the first but he knew it wasn’t going to be that easy.

“I knew he was tough and very experience so I didn’t get that excited when he went down in the first round, I knew he was going to come back strong,” the affable Barragan said thoughfully. “I listened to my corner, fought smart and didn’t get ahead of myself and we were able to come out with the win.”

In his first six rounder of his career tonight, Barragan looks to continue the trend in 2014 and look to step up to eight round bouts soon. “I think I will look to step it up next year. Fighting more often and looking to see what doors open.”

The Crowne Plaza Hanalei Hotel is located at 2270 Hotel Circle North in San Diego. Tickets are still available at SanDiegoFights.com or by calling 619.420.8866. Doors open at 6:30 with the first punch thrown at 7:30pm.
“San Diego Fights” is proudly sponsored by Mossy Automotive Group, Filippi’s Pizza Grotto, Car Czar, Everlast, David G. Schmidt General Contractor, House of Boxing Gym and Boxing Fraternity Apparel and features the San Diego Bikini Dolls.

Lamar Russ to face Macklin on December 7th

According to Dan Rafael of espn.com, undefeated Lamar Russ will step in for the injured Willie Nelson and face former world title challenger Matthew Macklin on December 7th in Atlantic City on HBO.

“This is a huge step up for the kid [Russ] but he really wants the opportunity,” said Lou DiBella, who promotes Russ and Macklin. “I think it’s a huge step up for Lamar, but he’s a terrific prospect and obviously we’ll see if he is ready for this kind of fight. He’s certainly a good young fighter. He doesn’t have the experience or the seasoning that Matt has, but he’s talented and he’s new blood in the division, and I know he will try. Matt welcomed the challenge and was willing to fight him. He knows he is fighting a hungry fighter.”

“I give Macklin respect for taking Russ, an unknown but hungry guy,” DiBella said. “And you have to respect Russ to taking this huge step up because he wants to fight on HBO. I give [Russ manager] Egis Klimas major props also for taking the fight. His attitude is that fighters fight and if you’re offered an opportunity you take it, because the worst that happens is you do your best and can’t pull it off. If Russ performs well, even if he loses, with only 14 fights, it won’t hurt him.”

SAN ANTONIO’S MARIO BARRIOS ELECTRIFYING IN PRO DEBUT

SAN ANTONIO TX (November 12, 2013) – Last night in his hometown at the Cowboys Dance Hall in San Antonio TX, super bantamweight Mario Barrios (1-0, 1 KO) looked electrifying in his pro debut. Barrios, who was a decorated amateur, showed great poise and tremendous power as he dominated his opponent Rigoberto Moreno wining by first round knockout.

“I felt extremely strong in my pro debut and I’m very happy to start my career off with a knockout,” said Barrios. “I want to thank everyone who came out to support me and my team for all their hard work. I can’t wait to get back in the ring.”

“The kid has all the tools to become something special,” said co-manager Bob Santos. “He showed us that he has the power to finish once he’s got his opponent hurt. I’m happy with his performance.”

“I was very impressed with Barrios’ skill set,” stated co-manager Luis DeCubas Jr. “He’s the best fighter I’ve seen in many years coming out of the amateurs. I can see him being very successful in multiple weight classes and becoming San Antonio’s biggest star in the future.”

Bruno Escalante to fight for IBA Super Flyweight title

SAN CARLOS, CA (November 12, 2013) – The incredibly athletic Bruno “The Aloha Kid” Escalante is getting his first shot at 115lb gold when he fights for the vacant IBA Super Flyweight Championship against Michael Ruiz (9-3, 3 KOs) of Fresno California. The ten round bout will take place on December 7th at the Sports House in Redwood City California.

Escalante (10-1-1, 5KOs) has garnered attention over the past year from boxing insiders who have been impressed with his agile footwork, quick hand speed, and his deceptive power. The Cebu, Philippine born fighter has grown into his capabilities and has secured his position within the ranks.

After growing up in the Philippines during his early years, Escalante moved to Hawaii before making a home out of California. He’s preparing for the opportunity of a lifetime, knowing full-well that capturing a title in the super-flyweight division could put him on the fast track to the top of the division.

“This is what I’ve been working towards my whole life, every good decision I’ve made, every trial and tribulation has been geared towards this moment. I’ve sacrificed a lot knowing that this day would come and now that it is finally here I’m ecstatic. I will take full advantage of this opportunity as well as the others that will follow,” Escalante said.

Escalante’s manager, Herb Stone, is excited for his fighter to be getting this shot.

“Since day one Bruno has spoken about fighting for a title and I know he appreciates this chance more than most. He knows what went into getting him to this point and he has put in the time and effort, as his manager it is great to see it all payoff and as a fan I’m eager to see him stack up his skills against the best. It won’t be long until he’s on everybody’s radar, he’s looking to make an immediate impact,” Stone said.

Escalante is merely 25, but he has a matured sense of knowledge in and out of the ring.

“Most look at youth as a disadvantage in terms of experience, but I’ve gained the most out of every learning situation I’ve been through and I see that as a direct advantage. I have the freshness of a young fighter with the capabilities of a seasoned-veteran, that is a dangerous combination. I will be dedicating this fight to my people back home who are suffering with the aftermath of Typhoon Haiyan. My prayers go out to everyone dealing with this terrible natural disaster.” Escalante said.

This bout is being promoted by Don Chargin Productions & Paco Presents. Tickets priced $40, $55 and $100 are on sale now and can be purchased online at www.pacopresentsboxing.com, Tix.com, or by calling the Sports House at (650) 362-4100, or by calling the Undisputed Boxing Gym at (650) 631-3781 or by calling B-Street Boxing at (650) 342-7408.

DON TURNER VS. ROGER BLOOWORTH: TWO TRAINERS AS HUNGRY FOR VICTORY AS THEIR FIGHTERS

VERONA, NY – On Saturday afternoon, when Tomasz Adamek, 49-2, 29 KOs, and Czar Glazkov, 15-0-1, 11 KOs, go to war in their 12-rounder to claim the #2 spot in the IBF heavyweight rankings, the two fighters won’t be the only ones with their reputations on the line. Just as proud and equally eager for victory as Adamek and Glazkov, are Roger Bloodworth and Don Turner, the legendary trainers that have guided these heavyweights into this critical bout.

Adamek and Glazkov fight live on NBC broadcast television, beginning at 2:30 PM ET/11:30 AM PT, Saturday afternoon, November 16th. Both the ringside crowd at the Turning Stone Resort Casino and the large TV audience watching at home, will be focused on the boxers in the ring, but an evenly competitive matchup will be going on in the corners between the two renowned trainers.

Don Turner, the trainer of Vyacheslav “Czar” Glazkov, is best known for his championship tenure with the great Evander Holyfield. Turner guided “The Real Deal” to his pair of legendary wins over Mike Tyson in world heavyweight championship fights. The old-school trainer has been in the sport for more than 50 years, and has also worked with other world champions and top contenders like Larry Holmes, Aaron Pryor, Mike McCallum, and many others. In Glazkov, Turner believes he has the next serious title threat at heavyweight.

Don Turner and Czar Glazkov

Turner said, “I have been in this game a long time. I’ve seen a lot of fighters and trainers come and go. I know that on the 16th I will have done everything I can to get my fighter prepared for whatever comes at him. We’ll be ready. We’ll see if Roger can say the same thing.”

Like Turner, Roger Bloodworth, has been kicking around the sport for decades. Bloodworth made his bones working with the likes of Pernell Whittaker, Andrew Golota, Fernando Vargas, David Tua, and Eddie Hopson. But it is his work as head trainer for current charge, Tomasz Adamek, that has cemented his reputation as one of boxing’s best trainers. Bloodworth helped Adamek transition into a heavyweight contender, after winning world titles in two lighter weight classes. That’s no easy trick. Yet Adamek has been victorious in all but one of his heavyweight starts, and is a win or two away from another try at his third world championship.

Adamek and Bloodworth

“It’s not about me, it’s about Tomasz,” said Bloodworth. “I don’t worry about what Don Turner is doing. We both have a job to do and I can’t speak for him, but I know I’ve done mine well. I’ve given Tomasz the tools he needs to win, now he just has to use them on the 16th.”

The trainers’ credentials are an even match, and each of them believes that come Saturday afternoon, they will have the correct game plan to carry their fighter to victory.

Of course the winning boxer, Adamek or Glazkov, will get all the glory, but true boxing fans understand that the fighters couldn’t do it without the right trainer in their corner. Lucky for Adamek and Glazkov that, on Saturday, two of the best trainers in the business will have their backs.

Adamek vs. Glazkov? Bloodworth vs. Turner? Let the games begin.

HEAVYWEIGHTS COLLIDE TUESDAY, NOV. 26 ON GOLDEN BOY LIVE! UNDERCARD WHEN DOMINIC BREAZEALE SQUARES OFF AGAINST NAGY AGUILERA AND ODLANIER SOLIS FACES KEVIN JOHNSON

SUNRISE, FLORIDA (Nov. 12) – It’s a night of heavyweight action at the BB&T Center in Sunrise, Fla. as the Tuesday, Nov. 26 edition of Golden Boy Live! not only showcases heavyweights Antonio Tarver and Mike Sheppard in the FOX Sports 1 and FOX Deportes main event for the vacant Interim NABA Heavyweight title, but also features two heavyweight showdowns in the undercard bouts. Unbeaten 2012 U.S. Olympian Dominic “Trouble” Breazeale takes on Nagy Aguilera in an eight-round televised bout and veteran contenders Odlanier “La Sombra” Solis and Kevin “Kingpin” Johnson meet in a 10-round non-televised bout for the IBF Intercontinental Heavyweight Title.

In the evening’s 10-round co-main event, undefeated bantamweight Randy “El Matador” Caballero makes his Florida debut against local southpaw Jessy Cruz of Miami. Cruz tops a roster of Miami-based talent featured on the Nov. 26 fight card.

An intimidating force at 6-foot-6, Dominic Breazeale (7-0, 7 KO’s) has taken out all comers in his path since turning pro after the 2012 London Olympics. In his last fight on Sept. 12, the former quarterback showcased his skills with a third-round technical knockout over Jon Hill. Now, the 28-year-old from Glendale, Calif. is ready to step things up on Nov. 26 against Nagy Aguilera.

A native of Santo Domingo, who now calls New York City home, the 27-year-old Nagy Aguilera (18-7, 12 KO’s) has a wealth of experience he plans on using on Nov. 26. A veteran of fights against heavyweight stars Antonio Tarver, Samuel Peter, Chris Arreola and Tomasz Adamek, Aguilera has won three of his last four bouts, a hot streak he takes into the ring against Breazeale.

A six-time Cuban National Champion and 2004 Cuban Olympic Gold Medalist, Odlanier Solis (20-1, 13 KO’s) is one of the greatest boxers Cuba has ever produced. With three consecutive wins since his 2011 challenge of WBC Heavyweight World Champion Vitali Klitschko that ended due to a knee injury, Solis is well on his way back to the top and looking forward to his first fight in his adopted state of Florida, residing in Miami, since 2010.

Ten-year pro Kevin Johnson (29-3-1, 14 KO’s) is a former heavyweight world title challenger who has won seven of nine bouts since extending Vitali Klitschko into the championship rounds during their 2009 fight. Coming off of a knockout over Australia’s Solomon Haumono in April, 2013, the 34-year-old from Neptune, N.J., is ready for his meeting with Solis.

Adding to the undercard action, one of the light heavyweight division’s emerging stars, 26-year-old Thomas Williams (14-0, 10 KO’s) of Washington, D.C., looks to follow up his 2013 wins over Jason Smith, Kevin Engel and Otis Griffin with another big victory in a 10-round match against Yusef Mack (31-6-2, 17 KO’s) of Philadelphia.

Opening the night will be three Miami natives. Junior lightweight Albert Bell (2-0, 1 KO) faces Bayamon, Puerto Rico’s Angel Hernandez (1-2) in a four-round bout. Making their professional debuts in four-round fights will be welterweight Erickson Lubin and featherweight Dennis Galarza facing Moca, Puerto Rico’s Jesus Sosa (0-1) and Arecibo, Puerto Rico’s Harold Torres, respectively.

Tarver vs. Sheppard, a 10-round bout for the vacant Interim NABA Heavyweight title, is presented by Golden Boy Promotions and sponsored by Corona and O’Reilly Auto Parts. The BB&T Center doors open at 7:00 p.m. ET and the first bell rings at 8:00 p.m. ET. The FOX Sports 1 and FOX Deportes bilingual simulcast will air live at 9:00 p.m. ET/6:00 p.m. PT.

“Tony has all the potential in the world and is rounding into world-class form,” said Cohen. “He looked sensational Saturday night and it won’t be long before he’s back on national television in a meaningful fight. He really has everything it takes to be a world champion.”

Nelson out of Macklin fight for December 7th

According to Dan Rafael of espn.com, Willie Nelson is out of his December 7th bout with Matthew Macklin due to an elbow injury.

“Darnell Boone tied him up and Willie heard a pop in his elbow,” said Lou DiBella, who promoted bith Nelson and Macklin. “We got verification over the weekend that he has the tear and can’t fight Macklin. Willie is probably going to be out for about four months. He probably won’t be able to fight until about mid-March.”

“Willie is very upset,” DiBella said. “He was prepared and he was psyched for this fight with Matt. But at least it wasn’t a total tear or a career-threatening injury. He’s upset but there’s nothing he can do about it, and he knows it could have been a lot worse. He had a sense as soon as he heard the pop that there was something wrong. So we’ll find a replacement to fight Macklin.”

Another opponent HBO suggested — whom Macklin and DiBella accepted — was Max Bursak (28-1-1, 12 KOs) of Ukraine.

“We tried to make that fight, which was HBO’s idea,” DiBella said. “But Bursak’s trainer vetoed the fight because it was on too short notice, so we’re working on another opponent.”

FIGHTER OF THE DECADE MANNY PACQUIAO MAKES HIS 2013 DEBUT AGAINST ONE OF BOXING’S MOST EXCITING FIGHTERS AND FORMER WORLD CHAMPION BRANDON RIOS

Pacquiao_Rios_LA2
NEW YORK (November 11, 2013) — If Horace Greeley were a boxing promoter today he would undoubtedly be espousing, “Go East, young man.” And in boxing’s biggest demonstration of Manifist Destiny, Fighter of the Decade Congressman MANNY “Pacman” PACQUIAO and former world champion BRANDON “Bam Bam” RIOS will battle each other in a 12-round welterweight rumble, Saturday, November 23, from The Venetian® Macao’s CotaiArena™, in Macao, China. Promoted by Top Rank® and Sands China Ltd., in association with MP Promotions, Tecate, Warner Bros. Pictures “Grudge Match” and Eva Airlines, Pacquiao vs. Rios will be produced and distributed live by HBO Pay-Per-View, beginning at 9:00 p.m. ET / 6:00 p.m. PT.

Remaining tickets, priced from $1,275 to $115, and various ticket-hotel packages at Sands China’s Cotai Strip Resorts Macao, are now on sale and can be purchased online at www.venetianmacao.com/manny. U.S.-based fans may also order via a special toll-free number: 1-855-234-4410.

The Pacquiao – Rios promotion began with a 23,722-mile international media tour, which started on July 27 in Macao, and stopped off in Beijing, Shanghai and Singapore, before moving to the U.S, with a day-long visit at the Bristol, Conn. headquarters of ESPN, followed by press conferences in New York and Los Angeles.

For Pacquiao, this marks the pound-for-pound box office monarch’s first fight outside the U.S. since his 12-round super featherweight unanimous decision victory over former world champion Oscar Larios in 2006, which took place in the Philippines. Rios’ only fights outside the U.S. were in México where he won a 10-round split decision over Ricardo Dominguez. and scored a second-round knockout of Daniel Valenzuela, in 2008 and 2009, respectively.

“Brandon Rios is the biggest test out there for me and I will be ready to meet the challenge,” said Pacquiao. “I have heard what Brandon has been saying. If he fights as well as he boasts it will be a great fight for us and the fans.”

“Out with the old, in with the new . . . and I’m the new! Manny, this is my time,” said Rios.

“Big time boxing is being firmly established in China with a Manny Pacquiao vs. Brandon Rios showdown at The Venetian Macao,” said Hall of Fame promoter Bob Arum. “It is fitting that Asia’s most famous fighter will box in a big event in Macao. All fight fans are looking forward to an exciting bout between Manny against super fan-friendly Brandon Rios with his exciting, never quit style.”

“This historic matchup between Manny Pacquiao and Brandon Rios is going to be spectacular,” said Edward Tracy, President and Chief Executive Officer, Sands China Ltd. “It’s the latest example of the edge-of-your seat, high-octane event that Sands China is known for. It’s all part of our multi-tiered entertainment strategy of bringing the world’s biggest superstars of sport to Macao to display their skills at these must-see events.”

“Manny Pacquiao versus Brandon Rios is a terrific stylistic matchup that fight fans are going to be enormously excited about,” said Mark Taffet, senior vice president, HBO Pay-Per-View. “In addition to so much being on the line in this fight we have the compelling backstory of the event taking place at a glamorous international destination that will generate even more interest in the fight and establish that Saturday, Nov. 23 is going to be an extraordinary, can’t miss night in boxing history.”

Trained by Hall of Famer Freddie Roach, Pacquiao (54-5-2, 38 KOs), the lone congressional representative from the Sarangani province in the Philippines (he was reelected to a second term, running unopposed this year), is the only fighter to win eight world titles in as many different weight divisions. A three-time Fighter of the Year and the Boxing Writers Association of America’s “Fighter of the Decade,” Pacquiao’s resumé features victories over future Hall of Famers, including Oscar De La Hoya, Ricky Hatton, Marco Antonio Barrera, Erik Morales, Miguel Cotto, Shane Mosley and Juan Manuel Márquez. From 2008 to 2010, five of his seven victories were world title victories in five different weight classes, where he dethroned super featherweight champion Márquez, lightweight champion David Diaz, junior welterweight champion Hatton, welterweight champion Cotto, and he annihilated three-time world champion Antonio Margarito for the vacant super welterweight title. Pacquiao’s seven-year, 15-bout winning streak came to an end on June 9, 2012, when he lost his World Boxing Organization (WBO) welterweight crown to undefeated WBO junior welterweight champion Timothy Bradley, Jr. via a controversial split decision. That was followed by a knockout loss to professional nemesis Márquez last December 8 — a fight Pacquiao was winning before he got careless trying to close the show and instead was stopped by the knockout punch of the year. No active boxer has sold more live tickets in the U.S. than Pacquiao, who has generated more than 11 million pay-per-view buys in the U.S.

Rios (31-1-1, 22 KOs), the former World Boxing Association (WBA) lightweight champion, from Oxnard, Calif., is on the hunt for his second world title in as many weight divisions. He enters this fight having won 11 of his previous 14 fights by knockout. One of boxing’s most exciting fighters, Rios is known for his all-action fan-friendly fighting style. His trainer, former International Boxing Federation (IBF) junior lightweight champion and 2012 Trainer of the Year Robert Garcia, calls it a “throwback” style with a warrior’s mentality that screams excitement. Highlight knockout victories on Rios’ resume include Miguel Acosta, Anthony Peterson, Urbano Antillon, John Murray and Mike Alvarado. Alvarado, the natural 140-pounder, entered that fight as the undefeated WBO No. 1 junior welterweight contender. Many consider it 2012’s Fight of the Year. In their exciting rematch, which took place on March 30, Rios lost a close decision for the vacant WBO interim junior welterweight title. It is considered the leading contender for the 2013 Fight of the Year. Rios enters this fight world-rated as the No. 1 contender.

The five-bout pay-per-view telecast will also feature undefeated IBF featherweight champion EVGENY GRADOVICH (17-0, 8 KOs), of Ingrim, Russia, defending his title in a rematch against the man he dethroned, BILLY DIB (36-2, 21 KOs), of Sydney Australia; No. 6-world rated contender ANDY RUIZ, Jr. (20-0, 14 KOs), of Mexiali, Mexico, and TOR HAMER (21-2, 14 KOs), of New York will battle for the WBO Inter-Continental and NABF heavyweight titles; two-time Olympic gold medalist and Chinese icon ZOU SHIMING (2-0) of Guizhou, China, continues his march toward a world title when he faces undefeated JUAN TOSCANO (4-0, 1 KO), of Ensenada, Mexico. The live pay-per-view telecast will open with undefeated 2012 Puerto Rican Olympian FELIX VERDEJO (8-0, 6 KOs), of San Juan, in a six-round junior lightweight fight against DUANAAYMUKDAHAN PETCHSAMUTHR (8-1, 1 KO), of Bangkok, Thailand.
