Rick Glenn and Georgi Karakhanyan fight at World Series of Fighting 7 for inaugural featherweight title

World Series of Fighting will soon crown the second champion in company history as Rick “The Gladiator” Glenn (14-2-1) meets Georgi “Insane” Karakhanyan (22-3-1) for the promotion’s inaugural featherweight title.

The two meet at “World Series of Fighting 7: Johnson vs. Kyle,” which takes place Dec. 7 at PNE Agrodome in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. The night’s main card airs on NBCSN at 9 p.m. ET/6 p.m. PT following prelims that stream on World Series of Fighting’s official website, WSOF.com.

Tickets for World Series of Fighting 7, which start at just $29, are available at TicketLeader.ca

“Anyone who’s seen Rick Glenn and Georgi Karakhanyan fight knows what kind of exciting, dynamic athletes they are in the cage,” World Series of Fighting President Ray Sefo said. “These two have proven themselves as the top two fighters in our 145-pound division, and I can’t wait to see them meet for our first-ever featherweight belt.”

Glenn is a 24-year-old member of Wisconsin’s famed Roufusport team. An Iowa native, Glenn has been competing professionally since 2006 and is unbeaten in his past 12 contests. He’s fought twice under the World Series of Fighting banner, earning a knockout over Alexandre Pimentel in March and returning in September to score an impressive decision win over a previously unbeaten Artur Rofi.

Meanwhile, Karakhanyan brings an eight-fight win streak to the matchup. The 28-year-old Millennia MMA fighter, who was born in Russia but now makes his home in Southern California, also turned pro in 2006 and has since racked up 22 wins, including 12 submission victories and another four by knockout. He debuted for World Series of Fighting in September, scoring an impressive first-round submission win over Waylon Lowe, who had won his previous four fights by knockout.

The winner of the Glenn vs. Karakhanyan will join recently crowned welterweight champion Steve Carl as the first two title holders on the World Series of Fighting roster.

With the addition to the World Series of Fighting 7 lineup, the night’s main card now includes:

Anthony Johnson vs. Mike Kyle
Rick Glenn vs. Georgi Karakhanyan – for inaugural WSOF featherweight title
Elvis Mutapcic vs. Jesse Taylor – middleweight tournament semifinal
Sabah Fadai vs. Nick Newell

WITH EYES SET ON BREAKOUT YEAR IN 2014 REDKACH IN STAY BUSY FIGHT THIS WEEKEND

New York, NY (11/5/13) – Looking to make the transition from hot up-and-coming prospect to legitimate world title contender in 2014, fast-rising Ukrainian knockout artist Ivan Redkach (14-0, 12KO’s) returns to action this Friday in St. Charles, MO, when he takes on Lowell Brownfield in an eight-round special attraction bout at the Ameristar Casino.

The WBC #17-rated Redkach, went a perfect 4-0, 3KO’s, in 2012, with all three stoppages coming in the very first round. After witnessing one of his bouts in 2012, esteemed reporter Doug Fischer, of Ringtv.com, stated, “Ivan Redkach is a stud; best lightweight prospect with less than 20 bouts. I think he can beat most prospects with 20+ bouts.” Following his one-round destruction of Tebor Brosch at Roseland Ballroom on October 24, the highly regarded Mike Woods, who covers boxing for TheSweetScience.com and ESPN.com, proclaimed, “This kid scared me. He put bad thoughts into my head.” Having been featured on Dan Rafael’s 2012 “Prospects to Watch” list, Redkach began 2013 right where he left off the previous year, scoring a devastating first-round stoppage over Sergio Rivera in February. In the aftermath of the Rivera bout, Redkach was forced to sit on the sidelines while he sorted out some issues with his team.

Now working with manager Larry Army, Redkach returned to action in September, but his bout against Antonio Sanchez was ruled a No Decision after both fighters suffered nasty cuts from an accidental clash of heads. Redkach is looking for an impressive performance again Brownfield and hopes to carry that momentum over into a breakout year in 2014.

The bout on Friday night is promoted by Rumble Time Promotions, in association with DiBella Entertainment.

DAVIS AIMS TO “WIN” THE CROWD WITH DOMINANT PERFORMANCE OVER JAMES DEGALE AT GLOW, BLUEWATER, ON NOVEMBER 16TH

London (4 November) Dyah Davis is out to “win” the crowd over and show James DeGale MBE what it’s like to challenge a “world class” fighter at Glow, Bluewater on November 16th, live on Channel 5 from 10pm.

The tough American is determined on coming out victorious when he meets the 2008 Olympic champion for the WBC Silver super middleweight title and feels his performance and “domination” will have the British fans cheering his name.

“I most definitely want to show James what it’s like to be in the ring with a world class opponent,” Davis said.

“I love the British fight fans – I’m a nice gentleman outside of the ring, I carry myself well and I’m respectable and I think with my performance and domination I plan on winning the fans over.”

The man known as ‘Dangerous’ is the former NABF champion and son of 1976 Olympic champion Howard Davis Jr.

A man with world class pedigree coursing through his veins, who has blemished the records of undefeated fighters and traded leather with current WBC world super middleweight champion Sakio Bika.

But Davis feels he wasn’t at his best that night and believes this is his opportunity to get back to the highest level.

“I was in with Sakio when I wasn’t in the best of form, I had an undisclosed injury that I didn’t share with anybody, but I took that fight feeling it was a great opportunity,” Davis said.

“I was world ranked at number three and I went out there hoping to outclass my opponent and do well, but I re-aggravated the injury before I stepped out to the ring, so my confidence dropped.

“But that is all behind me now, I have James DeGale in front of me and I’m looking to capitalise on this opportunity and come out victorious.

“This is my opportunity to get back to world level, this is a big stage, I’m very excited and very anxious to take it.”

SPECIAL NIGHT FOR HEATHER “THE HEAT” HARDY RETURNS HOME TO BROOKLYN TO CHALLENGE FOR FIRST WORLD TITLE A YEAR AFTER HURRICANE SANDY DESTROYED HER HOME

New York, NY (11/4/13) – This Saturday, fast-rising female contender Heather “The Heat” Hardy (6-0, 1KO) will be fighting for the first time at home in Brooklyn when she squares off against Laura Gomez (4-3) at the Aviator Sports and Events Center in Brooklyn, NY. The bout is scheduled for eight rounds and will be for the UBF International super bantamweight title.

In the main event, fellow Brooklynites Gabriel “Tito” Bracero (22-1, 4KO’s) and Dmitriy “Star of David” Salita (35-1-1, 18KO’s) face off in an ultimate crossroads/neighborhood battle when the two meet for their much anticipated 10-round welterweight showdown.
dbe
Anytime a fighter has the opportunity to fight in their hometown, it is something special. Competing for a world title for the first time as a professional when just a year earlier Super Storm Sandy had destroyed her family’s home certainly gives Hardy extra incentive.

“It means so much for me to be fighting in Brooklyn, here at home. It’s just minutes from where I grew up and I’ll finally be able to show some of my friends and family who have never seen me fight as I step into the ring,” said Hardy. “It’s been a year since Sandy ripped through and devastated Gerritsen Beach, my hometown. The storm took out 2,500 homes, leaving countless families, mine included, homeless and rebuilding their lives. I am so proud to be able to give my town, my friends, my family, and my fans something to come out and cheer for.”

The bout next Saturday will already be Hardy’s seventh fight since turning pro just a little over a year ago. Hardy, a NY Golden Gloves champion who recently signed an exclusive long-term promotional contract with DBE, has quickly become one of the main boxing attractions in New York City. Each time she has stepped into the ring, she has thrilled her adoring and growing fan-base with her exciting and relentless come-forward style. After her signing, promoter Lou DiBella, a longtime advocate of women’s boxing, proclaimed, “Heather has the ability, the story and the intangibles to be a legitimate star in the biggest media market in the world. I believe that Heather can be New York City’s breakthrough female fighter.” While Heather realizes she is still improving and perfecting her craft, she does see big things in her future.

“I am honored to be presented with the opportunity to fight for the UBF title. As with all my fights, I’ve given 100% to my training and I’ll be bringing the heat fight night, no doubt! I plan to stay busy, keep winning, and hopefully at this time next year, we will be talking about a world title shot in front of a big crowd somewhere. I love what I do, and I won’t stop till I’m at the top.”

The event on Saturday is promoted by DiBella Entertainment, in association with Star of David Promotions and sponsored by Manfredi Auto Group and Everlast and will be broadcast taped-delayed on SNY.

Tickets are currently on sale and are priced at $125, $85, $65 and $45, and can be purchased by calling the DiBella Entertainment office at (212) 947-2577. Only a limited number of tickets are currently left at each price point, so act fast as this event will be sold out!

Abdusalamov in coma after Perez loss

Heavyweight Magomed Abdusalamov is in a medically induced coma after a small blood clot was found on his brain following his Saturday night defeat to Mike Perez in New York according to Dan Rafael of espn.com.

“He had surgery to have the blood clot taken out and a small piece of his skull removed to allow the [brain] swelling to go down,” Nathan Lewkowicz told ESPN.com. “After the fight he seemed fine, but they took him to the hospital to check him out and because he wasn’t feeling so good.”

“He was taken to the hospital to make sure he was OK and once he was there they found [the clot],” he said. “He thought he broke his left hand in the second round and also thought he had broken his nose at some point in the fight. But the bigger concern once he was at the hospital was the head injury they discovered.”

“Hopefully, ‘Mago’ will be out of the hospital in a couple of days,” Lewkowicz said. “He took a lot of shots to the head. His left hand is his power hand and once he broke it, he kept throwing with the right hand, but he wasn’t the same.”

Added HBO Sports president Ken Hershman in a statement: “The thoughts and prayers of all of us at HBO Sports are with Magomed Abdusalamov. We are grateful for the medical care he is receiving here in New York City and out of respect for Magomed and his family, we will wait for any official updates on his condition before making any further statements.”

Top Rank signs Olympic Gold Medal winner Mekhonstev

According to Dan Rafael of espn.com, Top Rank has signed 2012 Olympic Gold Medal winner Egor Mekhonstev. The Light Heavyweight will turn pro on the December 7th Guillermo Rigondeaux – Joseph Agbeko card in Atlantic City.

“We saw a DVD of [some of his amateur fights] and I loved him,” Top Rank chairman Bob Arum told ESPN.com. “I used to do so many of the great light heavyweight fights [in the late 1970s and 80s] with guys like Matthew Saad Muhammad, Eddie Mustafa Muhammad, Victor Galindez, Yaqui Lopez, Mike Rossman, so I am schooled in light heavyweights and this guy is the kind of fighter who could hold his own with any of those guys. He really reminds me of a guy who could hold his own with them.”

“It is very interesting for me to begin boxing professionally after accomplishing all I did as an amateur. I am very excited,” Mekhontsev said through manager Vadim Kornilov, who also manages newly crowned junior welterweight titleholder Ruslan Provodnikov.

“I am excited as well to begin working with such an amateur standout,” Kornilov said. “I am very confident in Egor’s future as a pro boxer.”

“These [gold medalists] essentially recruited us,” Arum said. “Usually, you run after these guys and wave money at them to get them to sign. We didn’t give one bonus to these guys. They felt we were the best promotions company for them, that we would develop them and put them in the right position and we made deals with them.”

“We stocked up,” said Arum, who turns 82 on Dec. 8. “Besides Mekhontsev, I got more Russians coming. Pretty soon, I can put my own army together. We signed all of these Olympians because we believe they will be top professionals and we believe that this is the future of boxing. It’s a worldwide sport. We didn’t make any differentiation in signing guys because of where they were from.

“We wanted the best fighters and we also know that there are markets all over the world, whether it’s the Russian market, Ukrainian, Chinese, Japanese. We’re now in position to bring the product to these markets because now we have the horses to do it. Whatever more years I have left, it will be on a high note with all of those talented kids.”

(Nov. 2nd, 2013) – Looking for his second consecutive win after capturing the North American Boxing Association (NABA) featherweight title two months ago, Hartford’s Mike Oliver fought to an entertaining draw against Brooklyn challenger Cornelius Lock on Saturday night at Foxwoods Resort Casino.

The eight-round bout between Lock and Oliver was the main event of Jimmy Burchfield’s “Connecticut Classic” pro-am card, featuring six amateur and six professional bouts. Following his disqualification win over Eric Hunter in September, Oliver (26-5-1) came out aggressive against the stronger Lock, but was at his best when weaving in and out of trouble while Lock was the better fighter toe-to-toe.

The two staged a tremendous finish over the final four rounds, exchanging blows along the ropes and in the center of the ring. Lock (21-6-2) earned a 78-74 decision on one card while the other two judges each scored the bout 76-76, resulting in a majority draw.

Fighting for the first time since capturing the Women’s International Boxing Association bantamweight title in May, New London’s Shelito Vincent (10-0, 1 KO) showed no signs of rust whatsoever in the six-round co-feature, coming out firing against the undersized Alisah McPhee (2-1) of British Columbia, Canada, who moved up in weight from 118 pounds to put her unbeaten record on the line against Vincent.

McPhee fought hard, but didn’t have the strength or speed to match Vincent, who looked just as sharp Saturday as she did in her previous win against Angel Gladney in May. Vincent caught McPhee early and often and eventually caught her in a flurry in the neutral corner late in the fourth round, forcing referee Shada Murdaugh to stop the bout with 2:08 remaining.

Worcester, Mass., heavyweight Donnie Palmer (3-0-1, 3 KOs) kept his unbeaten record intact, stopping New Haven’s Solomon Maye (1-1) with 36 seconds remaining in the fourth and final round. Palmer agreed to fight Maye early Friday morning, 24 hours before the event, after Maye’s original opponent, Zeferino Albino, was forced to withdraw Thursday due to personal reasons.

The 6-foot-10 Palmer had the distinct height advantage over the shorter, 6-2 Maye, but Maye looked sharp early, working the body aggressively while Palmer backpedaled looking to avoid sustaining any damage. As the fight wore on, Palmer ultimately wore down Maye, using his 267-frame to keep Maye against the ropes while landing clean blows to the head. Murdaugh deducted a point from Maye in the fourth for spitting his mouthpiece out a third time and eventually stopped the bout moments later when Maye could no longer defend himself.

In one of the most entertaining fights of the night, female bantamweights Marcia Agripino (1-0-1) of Groton, Conn., and newcomer Michelle Cook (0-0-1) of upstate New York battled to a majority draw following four action-packed rounds. Cook, a highly-regarded amateur from the Adirondacks, dominated the early rounds with sharp, effective counterpunching against the aggressive Agripino, but Agripino fought back in the latter half of the fight and began landing cleanly while avoiding Cook’s counterpunches. One judge scored the bout in favor of Cook, 39-37, while the remaining judges each scored it 38-38, resulting in a majority draw.

Super welterweight Christian Lao of New Haven (5-2-1) won for the first time in more than a year, outworking Hartford’s Joe Wilson Jr. (1-1) to earn a 39-37, 40-36, 38-38 majority decision. Lao’s speed and footwork were too much for Wilson, as he ducked in and out trouble and landed cleanly without taking much punishment. Following a year-and-a-half layoff, Lao returned to the ring Oct. 5, fighting to a draw, before beating Wilson on Saturday night.

New Haven welterweight Jimmy Williams (5-0-1) bounced back from a draw in early October with a unanimous decision win over the slick, elusive Evincii Dixon (2-3-1) of Lancaster, Pa., 39-37 on all three scorecards. The two spent most of the opening round posturing while trying to find an opening. Dixon seemed intent on counterpunching while Williams was the aggressor looking to press the action. The pace picked up in the third round as Williams opened with his most effective flurry of the night, forcing Dixon to exchange. Williams continued to press in the fourth round while Dixon landed several effective counterpunches, but not enough to sway the judges, resulting in his second loss in his last three fights dating back to September.

Coleman Weighs Heavy; Zahir Raheem Keeps Fight Going

Tacoma, WA (November 2nd, 2013) – In a wild situation regarding the main event fight between Zahir Raheem and Tim Coleman, extra effort had to be taken to keep the fight on. In a scheduled 143 pound fight, Zahir Raheem weighed in at 141 pounds while Coleman weighed considerably higher. To rectify the situation, Raheem had to gain almost nine pounds in the past 12 hours to meet the newly scheduled 150 pound weight agreement while Coleman continued to cut.

“Zahir is a world class fighter and is the main reason this fight isn’t scratched,” said promoter, Brian Halquist. “He agreed to take on a fight with Coleman who weighed in two weight classes above what was scheduled. We couldn’t have asked for any more from Zahir and we’re very happy to have him as part of the Halquist Productions team.”

Halquist Productions’ Battle at the Boat 93 will take place tonight at the Emerald Queen Casino in Tacoma, WA. Six fights are anticipated throughout the night including the main event between Zahir Raheem and Tim Coleman scheduled for 10 rounds of action. Five other fights, all scheduled for four rounds each, will take place throughout the night on the undercard portion of the show. Doors open at 6 PM with the first fight starting at 7 PM.

Golovkin was undaunted and was gunning for the knockout of Stevens, who at this point was looking like a beaten man with blood coming from his nose. Finally and luckily for Stevens, he has a trainer who cares and it was his uncle Andre Rozier who saved his nephew from any more damage and called off the fight at the end of round eight.

Gutknecht fights Sukhotsky for IBF final eliminator slot on November 23

Eduard Gutknecht (25-2, 9 KOs) starts a new run towards a chance to fight for a world championship belt. Next up for the prodigy of Ulli Wegner is a semi eliminator, which was ordered by the IBF. On November 23, at the “brose Arena” in Bamberg the man who also tries to position himself for a final eliminator to the IBF Light Heavyweight World Championship, currently held by Bernard Hopkins, will be Dmitry Sukhotsky (20-2, 15 KOs).

“This is about earning a title shot,” said the 31-year old former European Champion. “First, I need to beat Sukhotsky, then Fonfara. I would relish the opportunity to fight Bernard Hopkins for the title and after November 23, I will make the next step towards him.” After losing a close decision to current world title contender and teammate Juergen Braehmer in February this year, the Team Sauerland promoted Gutknecht posted a dominant decision win over Uruguayan Richard Vidal in June. He believes: “I have learned a lot about myself and the way I have to fight over my last bouts. It’s all about adapting on the fly if the initial game plan doesn’t work.”

The challenge Gutknecht faces on November 23 will actually show if he can translate his mindset into the ring. Sukhotsky (32) already has the experience of one world title fight. In 2009, he also suffered a narrow defeat on points to Braehmer, then the WBO World Champion at 175 lbs. With both Gutknecht and Sukhotsky being involved in such competitive bouts against the same opponent, an action-packed match-up has to be expected.

The main event in Bamberg will see IBF and RING Cruiserweight Champion Yoan Pablo Hernandez defending his titles against mandatory challenger Alexander Alekseev. Tickets for the big fight night at the brose Arena in Bamberg can be purchased at www.eventim.de and www.boxen.com.

“The Black Panther” is back! Juan Carlos Gomez stops Adnan Buharalija in two at cruiserweight return

Juan Carlos Gomez kept his word when returning to the cruiserweight division with a bang on Friday night in Dachau, Germany. “The Black Panther” seemed to feel very comfortable back at 200 lbs. landing nice combinations at will against an overmatched Adnan Buharalija from Bosnia and Herzegovina. Gomez dropped his opponent with a nice left hook at the end of round one and followed up in the second flooring Buharalija again. Only seconds before the end of round two the referee stepped in to stop the one-sided fight to save Buharalija from further punishment.

“I said it – and I did it! “The Black Panther” is back! This was only the first step on my way back to the world championship. I will take back what’s mine. I will be cruiserweight champion of the world again!”, said Gomez smiling and celebrating with his fans.

In the co-feature of the night local hero Alexander Petkovic stopped Chupaki Chipindi from Tanzania in the fourth round to retain his GBU championship belt. Petkovic dominated the fight landing some clean and hart shots but Chipindi took them very well and kept firing back as long as the fight lasted.

“I am very happy with my performance. I hope I made my fans proud”, said Petkovic. “There’s always a lot of pressure when you fight at home in front of your friends and family. But I handled it well and took care of business. I thank everybody who helped me and supported me.”

Promising unbeaten light heavyweight prospect Shefat Isufi got past rough and tough contender Vasile Dragomir in a competitive fight. Dragomir suffered an injury on the left arm which forced him to quit on the stool after the fourth round. On the undercard 18 year-old super middleweight talent Vincent Feigenbutz, cruiserweight contender Goran Delic and up-and-coming lightweight James Chereji added victories to their unbeaten records.
