“Fight Night at the Horseshoe: The Black Wednesday Battle” to feature the return of impressive lightweight Yakubu “Black Mamba” Amidu

hicago, IL, Wednesday, October 23, 2013–Bobby Hitz announced that the always impressive lightweight Yakubu “Black Mamba” Amidu will return to the ring in the Main Event of “Fight Night at the Horseshoe: The Black Wednesday Battle” on Wednesday, November 27 at 7:00 PM at The Venue at the Horseshoe Casino in Hammond. Amidu (20-4-2 18 KOs), of Los Angeles by way of Ghana, impressed a national television audience with a controversial draw against Juan Carlos Burgos (30-1-2, 20 KOs) on July 26. His opponent will be announced shortly. Joining Amidu on the card that evening will be exciting Chicago super middleweight Mike “Hollywood” Jimenez (11-0, 8 KOs) who will take on “King” David Thomas (10-4-2 8 KOs) of Evansville, IN in six round match. Tickets are available at The Venue Box office and hitzboxing.com.

“Our Black Wednesday card is packed with exciting evenly matched bouts and Chicago fight fans are in for excellent boxing,” said Hitz. “When Yakubu took that controversial draw against Burgos he proved that he deserves to be on the national stage, so its great to showcase him next month and I am excited to see how Mike bounces back after the Findley fight.”

Although Jimenez remains undefeated, he suffered a setback when Derrick “Superman” Findley of Gary, IN stopped him in the seventh rough of their September bout which was ruled a “no contest” after Findley tested positive for a banned substance.

Hitz will also present two bouts between undefeated fighters. Omaha’s knockout specialist Johnny “Wite Boi” Determan (7-0, 6 KOs) will take on the equally tough James Smith (7-0 5 KOs) of Detroit in a six round super flight weight bout. Promising welterweight Roy Navarro (2-0, 1 KO) of Downers Grove will square off against Rockford’s dynamic Nick “Bad Boy” Ramirez (3-0-1, 1 KO) in a four round bout.

Chicago veterans Genaro Mendez (7-1-1, 4 KOs) of Chicago and Antonio “Aztec God of War” Canas (8-1-1, 3 KOs) will go six rounds in an eagerly anticipate light welterweight between local favorites.

Do or die for Abraham against De Carolis on October 26

arthur-abraham_image206
The tension is rising! There are only three days to go until Arthur Abraham (37-4, 28 KOs) can prove that he is rightfully the mandatory challenger to WBO Super Middleweight World Champion Robert Stieglitz. On October 26 at the EWE ARENA in Oldenburg, Germany the WBO Intercontinental Titlist will meet world-ranked Giovanni De Carolis (20-4, 10 KOs). And only a win can keep his dreams of a third fight against Stieglitz alive.

“I know what’s on the line,” assured the 33-year-old Abraham at today’s press conference at the Acara Hotel in Oldenburg. Asked about his ten-year-tenure as a professional boxer with coach Ulli Wegner, the former two-weight division world champion replied jokingly: “As you can see, I have no thick hair anymore. I lost nearly all of it!” But he believes that during those years the rough tone of his cornerman has helped him to be successful. “Look Arthur,” 71-year-old Wegner added. “This Saturday night I will be in your corner and not with Karo Murat in Atlantic City. That’s what our relationship means to me!”

Said Kalle Sauerland: “Only a victory counts and I believe that Arthur is going to deliver it on October 26. It’s do or die – a wins means another crack at a world title, a loss would be catastrophic.

However, Italian De Carolis wants to spoil those plans. The 29-year-old boasted a lot of confidence today: “I’m well prepared. After having studied Abraham’s last fights, my coach and I have worked out a game plan to beat him.”

Tickets for the big fight night at the EWE ARENA Oldenburg, which also sees Jack Culcay, Robert Woge and Marcos Nader fighting in title bouts, can be purchased at www.eventim.de and www.boxen.com.

No ‘Boo Boo’ for Demetrius Andrade in WBO title fight vs. Vanes Martirosyan

andrade
ATLANTA (October 23, 2013) – Undefeated light middleweight Demetrius “Boo Boo” Andrade (19-0, 13 KOs), a 2008 U.S. Olympian, is on a mission to complete a rare “boxing double” November 9, when he fights 2004 U.S. Olympian Vanes “Nightmare” Martirosyan (33-0-1, 21 KOs) for the vacant World Boxing Organization (WBO) 154-pound title.

Andrade vs. Martirosyan will be part of an HBO tripleheader, airing live from Corpus Christi, Texas, headlined by WBO junior lightweight Roman Martinez’ title defense against Mikey Garcia, in addition to a rematch between former world champions Nonito Donaire and Vic Darchinyan.

In 2007, Andrade captured a gold medal as an amateur at the AIBA World Championships in Chicago. A Nov. 9th victory over Martirosyan would make Andrade one of the few contemporary world champions as both a professional and amateur.

The gifted southpaw can become the first native New Englander to be world champion of a major governing body since Massachusetts-born heavyweight John “The Quietman” Ruiz in 2005, as well as the first Rhode Islander to do the same since Cranston’s light middleweight Vinny “The Pazmanian Devil” in 1991.

“I honestly don’t pay attention to anything other than working hard to reach my goal of becoming world champion,” the 25-year-old said from his Atlanta training camp. “Everything else is irrelevant, at least for right now, as I train for my first world title fight. New England has had a lot of good fighters.

“I do know I am going to be the first (pro) world champion from the 2008 U.S. Olympic Team. I just want to show the boxing world that I am the No. 1 light welterweight in the world and why I will be for years to come. I’m just beginning my legacy. I’m growing in stature and a lot more people are going to know me after November 9th.”

Andrade credits his amateur boxing experience as the primary reason why fighting HBO for the first time won’t be a problem, as well as his 300+ amateur fights giving him an advantage in the ring against any opponent.

“HBO is a big stage and I’m grateful to be fighting on HBO for the first time,” Andrade noted, “but there’s no bigger stage in boxing, world-wide, than The Olympics. I’ve fought under the bright lights, so fighting on HBO won’t be anything new for me, or a distraction in any way.

“I’ve seen and beaten every style, fighting amateur opponents from all over the world, but nobody in the pros has fought anybody like me. I’m going into this fight with a lot of confidence. I’ve prepared for this moment my entire life. This is my time!”

QUILLIN AND ROSADO VOW TO KNOCK ONE ANOTHER OUT IN WORLD TITLE CLASH THIS WEEKEND LIVE ON BOXNATION

Peter Quillin_2
LONDON (23 Oct) – Peter ‘Kid Chocolate’ Quillin has hit back at ‘King’ Gabriel Rosado vowing to knock him out before conquering middleweight marvel Sergio Martinez.

The undefeated WBO middleweight world champion faces the hardened Philadelphian Rosado on the undercard of the Bernard Hopkins-Karo Murat clash this weekend at the Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City.

Fireworks are expected when the pair enter the ring, with Rosado earlier promising to make an early night of it, something which hasn’t sat too well with the current champion.

“He says the fight is going to a knockout and he’s not going to the scorecard. I really, honestly, see that, but I don’t believe it’s going to be me that’s going to be the one that’s taking defeat, knocked out,” insisted Quillin.

“I just know that I’ve been training very, very hard for this fight. I know what I’m able to do. I’m not comparing my performance to anybody. I’m not trying to match my performance.

“I’m going to do “Kid Chocolate” that’s all I know how to do, and with my last three fights people count for that too but they don’t count the last three where it’s been 11 knock downs.

“Everyone I touch they have a different approach, and once I touch them it’s not the same, and I’m praying for Gabe that’s he’s able to go up there and put his best foot forward because that’s all he can do, and when that’s not enough he’s just going to have to shake hands and going to have to accept defeat because that’s what I’m going to deliver,” said Quillin.

Raised in Grand Rapids, Michigan, the city of the legendary Floyd Mayweather, Quillin captured the WBO middleweight world title after a scintillating 12-round performance against Hassan N’Dam, which saw the French-Cameroonian hit the deck six times.

Long thought of as one of boxing’s glamour divisions, Quillin is out to restore the sparkle of past middleweight eras by insisting he wants to face the best out there should he get past Rosado, starting with the man he regards as the best in the division – Martinez.

“I would place myself second behind Sergio Martinez. I’ve been calling Sergio Martinez out from day one when everybody didn’t think I was a serious fighter,” he said.

“I would place myself number two only because I was willing to fight all the guys that Gennady Golovkin is fighting, Matthew Macklin. I was willing to fight Gennady Golovkin, but a lot of things and a lot of business hold back a lot of these things.

“I just know that I’m going to fight hard whatever place I am to be number one, be the number one middleweight in the United States and be number one middleweight in the world,” said Quillin.

“It’s one of my dreams, to be a unified champion, and I reconstructed my goals after I won the title to say that that’s the next mission that there’d be a unified champion,” he said.

JAMES DEGALE MBE LOOKING TO SEND A BIG ‘STATEMENT’ TO WARD, FROCH AND CO. ON NOVEMBER 16TH

London (23 October) James DeGale MBE is out to send a big ‘statement’ to the super middleweight division on November 16th at Glow, Bluewater, live on Channel 5 from 10pm.

The WBC Silver champion hopes to give the fans an emphatic ‘stoppage’ win in defence of his title and show he is ready for anyone.

“It’s time now for me to make a statement because it’s not about treading water, trust me, I do want the big fights and I want the big names,” said the 2008 Olympic Gold medalist.

“I know they’re out there and big nights ahead, but now my only focus is on Davis, November 16th and delivering a big performance for the fans.”

DeGale takes on ‘Dangerous’ Dyah Davis, a former NABF champion who has faced and beaten undefeated fighters and shared the ring with the WBC world super middleweight champion Sakio Bika.

A tough American who boasts 22 wins and will provide a stern test as his namesake suggests.

But the man fondly known as ‘Chunky’ recognises the threat and is focussed on overcoming it in style.

“I’m going to be going in there switched on and full of confidence and try and get that stoppage win,” James said.

“It’s a great venue and I want to go in there and put on a performance for all the fans – I want the big names and the big nights and I know the first step to that is doing a good job on Davis.

“I’m not overlooking him, if anything I’m more focussed on him because I know where a good performance here can lead me.”

Warriors wins Mendez- Barthelemy title bout purse bid

Warriors Boxing won the purse bid to promote the IBF Jr. Lightweight title bout between Argenis Mendez and Rances Barthelemy according to Dan Rafael of espn.com

Leon Margules, who promotes Barthelemy, was the lone bidder at the IBF offices in Springfield, N.J., offering $51,000. The minimum bid was $50,000. Mike Tyson’s Iron Mike Productions, which promotes Mendez, surprisingly was a no-show and did not offer a bid.

“I got a call from them a while back about making a deal with me before there was going to be a purse bid,” Margules said. “They made me an offer and it was a good offer. I said the number [of dollars] was fine but I needed to know when and where the fight would be and I needed a certain amount of [plane tickets for] travel and then I never heard back from them.

“But I like my guy’s chances. Barthelemy can win. I think it’s a good fight, two top 130 pounders.”

Abraham, De Carolis showcase skills at open workout

arthur_abraham
Arthur Abraham (37-4, 28 KOs) feels comfortable before his upcoming fight on October 26! At today’s public workout at the Famila Einkaufsland, the biggest mall in Oldenburg, the former world champion and opponent Giovanni De Carolis (20-4, 10 KOs) showed that there will be a fight at hand this upcoming Saturday.

“It’s good to be back in Oldenburg”, said WBO Intercontinental Champion Abraham, who will not only risk his belt but also his mandatory spot to WBO Super Middleweight World Champion Robert Stieglitz. “I had my initial world title defense at middleweight at the EWE ARENA in 2006. The people here are always excited about a good fight, which I want to offer them this weekend.” With those fond memories on his mind, Abraham fired-off some quality combinations to the pads of his coach Ulli Wegner.

The people in attendance could also witness an intense workout by De Carolis. The man from Rome, Italy, who will enjoy a height advantage of nine centimeters towards Abraham, surely did not hold back today. With that kind of self-confidence, he might very well be a threat to Abraham, who wants to continue his unbeaten streak in Oldenburg.

Hometown favorites Vincent, Oliver return to Foxwoods to headline next week’s Pro-Am card

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (Oct. 22nd, 2013) — Two of Connecticut’s most accomplished fighters are set to return to their stomping grounds next weekend to headline one of the deepest Pro-Am boxing events of the year.

Former world champion Mike Oliver (26-5, 8 KOs) of Hartford and undefeated female bantamweight Shelito Vincent (9-0) of New London will star in “The Connecticut Classic,” presented by Jimmy Burchfield’s Classic Entertainment & Sports on Saturday, Nov. 2, 2013 at the Fox Theater.

Oliver, who recently captured the North American Boxing Association (NABA) featherweight title, will face another tough test next weekend when he battles Philadelphia’s Cornelius Lock (21-6-1, 13 KOs) in the eight-round main event, while Vincent will put her unbeaten record on the line in the six-round co-feature against undefeated Canadian prospect Alisah McPhee (2-0) of British Columbia.

“The Connecticut Classic” features five professional bouts and six additional amateur bouts. Tickets are priced at $30.00, $50.00 and $100.00 (VIP) and can be purchased online at www.cesboxing.com or www.ticketmaster.com, by phone at 401-724-2253/2254 or at the Fox Theater box office.

Both Oliver and Lock are coming off wins; Lock, a former North American Boxing Organization (NABO) featherweight champion, ended a three-year layoff with back-to-back wins in January and May, the latter by unanimous decision against Lonnie Smith in Detroit, while Oliver captured the NABA belt in September with a win over Eric Hunter via disqualification. The diminutive southpaw Oliver now has two titles on his resume; he won International Boxing Organization (IBO) world super bantamweight championship in 2007.

McPhee, a full-time elementary school teacher in British Columbia, will make her United States debut next weekend against Vincent. Undefeated as an amateur, McPhee made her debut in December against former Canadian National Team member and two-time bronze medalist Jaime Ward and beat her by split decision in a five-round bout. This will be Vincent’s first fight since May when she beat Angel Gladney by unanimous decision to capture the vacant Women’s International Boxing Association (WIBA) International title.

The undercard of “The Connecticut Classic” also features a four-round welterweight bout between Jimmy Williams (4-0-1, 2 KOs) of New Haven and veteran Evincii Dixon (2-2-1, 1 KO) of Lancaster, Pa., and a highly-anticipated four-round intra-state showdown between light middleweights Joe Wilson Jr. (1-0) of Hartford and New Haven’s Christian Lao (4-2, 2 KOs). Female flyweight Marcia Agripino (1-0) will make her Foxwoods debut against former New York State Champion Michelle Cook of Massena.

The amateur portion of “The Connecticut Classic” is loaded with bouts featuring several of New England’s top-ranked lightweights and middleweights, including light heavyweight Elvis Figueroa of New Haven’s Boxing In Faith Gym facing Bobby Harris Jr., of Worcester, Mass., the son of former Worcester heavyweight Bobby Harris. Middleweight Godfrey Campbell of New Haven’s Elephant In The Room Boxing Club will battle Jonathan Figueroa from Coondog Boxing in Meriden, Conn., and middleweight Deydrei Montalvo of the Montalvo Boxing Association in Stamford, Conn., facing Mohammad Allen of Martinez Boxing in New Britain, Conn. In the lightweight division, William Foster (BIF) will face Worcester’s Jermaine Ortiz; Victor DeJesus (Martinez Boxing) will take on Roberto Vega of Whaling City Boxing in New London; and Izaih Melendez of Sweet Science Boxing of East Hartford, Conn., will battle Edgar Figueroa of Hartford’s Bright Futures Youth Center. All amateur bouts are open division bouts with three-minute rounds, with the exception of the Montalvo-Allen bout, which is a novice bout at two minutes per round. All fights and fighters are subject to change.

Jorge ‘Destroyer’ Melendez Promises to Retire Angulo: Make The Fight, Let’s Go to War!

Puerto Rican junior middleweight slugger Jorge “Destroyer” Melendez (27-3-1, 26 KOs) is on the verge of getting a fight he has been calling for, for a very long time: an all-action “can’t miss” showdown with the always-dangerous Mexican, Alfredo ‘El Perro’ Angulo (22-3-18 KOs).

With only some purse negotiations left to settle, the pair are set to meet on Saturday, December 14, at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas and live on SHOWTIME Pay-Per-View, as one of the featured bouts of a blockbuster night of boxing that also features Adrian Broner vs. Marcos Maidana, Jesus Soto Karass vs. Keith Thurman and Victor Ortiz vs. Carlos Molina.

“Let’s get this finished, so I can begin getting ready to give the great people of Puerto Rico my finest victory yet,” said Melendez. “By beating Angulo into retirement, I will put my island back on the boxing map worldwide. It will be a war, but I’m a Puerto Rican warrior who doesn’t run. I have the best power in the entire division and Angulo will be ‘Destroyed’.

Only a select few times per year does a notable fight get made for a wide audience with this much “Fight of the Year” potential. Melendez manager, Edwin Diaz, says he hopes an agreement can be reached with Golden Boy Promotions on purse, to keep this sensational fight a reality. “We are not asking for an excessive amount,” he explained. “In fact, our request is still below the real value of the fight. ‘Destroyer’ vs. ‘El Perro’ will steal the spotlight that night. With so many disappointing matchups this year, this is the kind of guaranteed-action fight boxing needs. Boxing fans and critics alike want this fight, so let’s make it happen.”

Melendez has been calling out Angulo for years, trying to make this exciting fight his calling card to the big time. The 24-year-old was last seen scoring an impressive TKO 2 victory over capable Philadelphia veteran Jamaal Davis on Saturday, October 5, on the TopRank.tv broadcast “Cotto vs. Rodriguez” undercard.

“Today I woke up with more desire and enthusiasm than ever,” continued Melendez. “I’m going to train harder than I ever have for this fight, while my coach, Wilfredo Vázquez, designs the strategy to defeat Angulo. Let’s get this fight negotiation finished so I can get ready. And when that night comes, the dog, ‘El Perro’ will go out screeching and with the tail between his legs.”

Diaz says it is expected that in the coming days, the team of both fighters and Golden Boy Promotions will reach a satisfactory agreement.

Joe Calzaghe debuts BoxNation’s hit new ‘Fighting Back’ series ahead of Hopkins-Murat clash

calzatpresser1
LONDON (22 Oct) – Undefeated boxing great Joe Calzaghe will kick off ‘Fighting Back’, a hit new series debuting on BoxNation this Friday, ahead of Bernard Hopkins’ world title showdown with German contender Karo Murat.

The first instalment of the series features the Welsh pugilist as he looks back over his historical victory over the eternal Hopkins, who became the oldest world champion ever at 48 when he beat Tavoris Cloud for the IBF title last March.

The show will go in-depth, providing a never before seen insight into one of British boxing’s most memorable nights, as Calzaghe gives a unique round-by-round breakdown of how he systematically beat the self-styled ‘Executioner’.

Heading into the fight in April 2008 many believed Hopkins’ experience and overall ring craft would finally crack the Calzaghe puzzle and add the first loss to his illustrious record.

However, despite this, it was the Welshman whose hand was raised at the Thomas & Mack Center in Las Vegas, winning a closely contested matchup via a split decision.

It is only now, after seeing the phenomenal achievements by Hopkins, who bounced back by winning three separate versions of the light-heavyweight world title, that this remarkable performance can truly be put into context.

Hopkins will once again look to defy mother time as he takes on the sturdy Murat, live and exclusive on BoxNation this weekend, with his IBF light-heavyweight title up for grabs.

‘Fighting Back – Calzaghe v Hopkins’ debuts on BoxNation (Sky Ch.437/Virgin Ch.546) at 7pm this Friday followed by ‘Uncut: Hopkins v Cloud’ at 8pm.

Watch Hopkins v Murat live and exclusive on BoxNation (Sky Ch.437/Virgin Ch.546) this Sunday at 2am. Visit www.boxnation.com to subscribe.

JOSE ANGEL COTA STEPS IN FOR JOSE SILVEIRA AGAINST MANUEL AVILA IN MAIN EVENT OF MONDAY, OCT. 28 GOLDEN BOY LIVE! FIGHT CARD ON FOX SPORTS 1 AND FOX DEPORTES IN REDWOOD CITY, CALIF.

REDWOOD CITY, CALIF. (Oct. 22) – With Jose Silveira forced to withdraw from his Monday, Oct. 28 bout against undefeated Fairfield, Calif. prospect Manuel “Tino” Avila (12-0, 4 KO’s) due to illness, tough Mexican prospect Jose Angel Cota (15-9-1, 11 KO’s)will step up to face “Tino” in a 10-round featherweight bout at the Sports House in Redwood City, Calif. in the Golden Boy Live! featured event on FOX Sports 1 and FOX Deportes.

In the co-main event, Salinas, Calif. native Paul “El Gallo Negro” Mendez willbattle Los Angeles’ Louis Rose in a 10-round middleweight showdown. In the opening televised bout, Bay Area sensation Jonathan “El Carismatico” Chicas, the top young prospect from the Golden State fight scene, will be in action against Los Angeles’ Joaquin Chavez in a six-round junior welterweight bout.

Power punching Jose Angel Cota (15-9-1, 11 KO’s) is always ready for a slugfest, making him a tough foe for anyone who faces him in the ring. A former Mexican Pacific Coast Champion, this aggressive warrior expects to give Avila the fight of his life on Oct. 28.

Paul “El Gallo Negro” Mendez (14-2-1, 6 KO’s) is a four-year professional with growing popularity amongst California fight fans, which isn’t surprising given his talent and stirring style. Unbeaten in eight straight bouts since 2011, the 24-year-old middleweight has scored consecutive wins over Alfredo Contreras, Dashon Johnson and Rahman Yusubov this year. He wants to make it four for four when he faces Louis Rose on Oct. 28.

One of the hottest rising fighters in the middleweight division, Louis Rose (8-1, 2 KO’s) hasn’t just won three straight fights in 2013, but he’s done it against three unbeaten prospects, handing Gino McClellan (9-0), Delen Parsley (10-0) and Akil Auguste (2-0) their first professional defeats. On Oct. 28, Rose is back on his home turf in California and looking to score a big win against Mendez.

A talented boxer and hard-hitting puncher, Jonathan “El Carismatico” Chicas (10-1, 4 KO’s) has ruled the Bay Area fight scene since turning pro in 2011, winning all but one of his fights while showing the heart and determination of a champion. Victorious in two straight bouts since the lone loss of his career against Moris Rodriguez in Dec. of 2012, the 24-year-old will look to extend that streak against fellow Californian Joaquin Chavez (6-10-2, 2 KO’s) of Los Angeles.

In non-televised undercard bouts (all scheduled for four rounds), Benjamin Briceno (2-1) of San Leandro, CA will face Sacramento’s Mario Ayala (2-1) in a junior featherweight bout; Redwood City’s own Jesus Sandoval (3-1-2) takes on an opponent to be determined in junior lightweight action; Salinas junior welterweight Darwin Price (2-0, 1 KO) will meet Washington’s Omar Avelar (2-9, 1 KO) of Lummi Reb, WA; Las Vegas cruiserweight Andrew Tabiti (2-0, 2 KO’s) will face an opponent to be determined; Lancaster, CA welterweight Tevin Watts will make his professional debut against King City, CA’s Gustavo Lopez (0-1) and unbeaten San Jose native Andy Vences (4-0, 2 KO’s) will square off against an opponent to be named in junior lightweight bout which will also air on FOX Sports 1 and FOX Deportes time permitting.

Avila vs. Cota,a 10-round featherweight bout, is presented by Golden Boy Promotions, Don Chargin Productions and Paco Presents and sponsored by Corona and O’Reilly Auto Parts. The Sports House doors open at 5:00 p.m. PT and the first fight starts at 5:30 p.m. PT. The FOX Sports 1 and FOX Deportes broadcast airs live at 10:00 p.m. ET/7:00 p.m. PT.

Fight Network Presents Cage Warriors FC: Fight Night 9 LIVE Friday, Oct. 25, at 2 p.m. ET

Toronto – Fight Network, the world’s premier 24/7 television channel dedicated to complete coverage of combat sports, will present a live broadcast of Cage Warriors Fighting Championship: Fight Night 9 from King Hussein Youth City in Amman, Jordan, this Friday, October 25, at 2 p.m. ET.

Fight Network’s live broadcast of Cage Warriors FC: Fight Night 9 will be aired nationwide in Canada, as well as internationally as part of Fight Network’s expansion on ZON in Portugal, D-Smart in Turkey, and ZAP in Angola and Mozambique.

In the main event, former Cage Warriors welterweight champion Gael Grimaud takes on Brazilian standout Bruno Carvalho.

The co-headliner pits former UFC prospect Che Mills against top-ranked Frenchman Fayal Hucin in a middleweight bout.

In other featured bouts, British bantamweight sensation Ronnie Mann battles Marat Pekov, while longtime veteran Jack Mason collides with Vladimir Opanasenko.

Carvalho (15-6) will be aiming for his second successive CWFC win, having overcome Steve Dinsdale – who was a late replacement for the injured Mohsen Bahari – at Cage Warriors 52 in March.

That victory saw the 31-year-old BJJ black belt rebound from a narrow decision loss to current CWFC welterweight title-holder Cathal Pendred last October at Cage Warriors 49 in Cardiff.

A Brazilian currently based in Sweden, Carvalho holds victories over former KSW middleweight champion Vitor Nobrega, Dream veteran Tatsuya Mizuno, former Pride middleweight Jean-Francois Lenogue and The Ultimate Fighter 11 contestant Kyacey Uscola.

Grimaud (17-6) also returns to Cage Warriors action for the first time since last March’s CWFC 52, when he relinquished the welterweight title via a unanimous decision defeat to Cathal Pendred..

The 33-year-old Frenchman was victorious when Cage Warriors last visited Bahrain, submitting Jesse Taylor to retain the belt in the third round of the CWFC Fight Night 6 headliner in May of last year.

Grimaud, who has 13 stoppage wins – 11 by submission – on his record, was crowned CWFC welterweight champion in September 2011 thanks to a second-round TKO triumph against Arni Isaksson at CWFC Fight Night 2 in Jordan.

Mills (15-6-0-2) will be fighting at middleweight for the first time since falling short against CWFC welterweight champion Cathal Pendred at Cage Warriors 55 back in June.

Having later announced his intention to switch to the 185lbs division, Mills was then scheduled to face Valentino Petrescu last weekend at Cage Warriors 59 in Cardiff, but the bout was pulled after both fighters took ill.

A native of Gloucester in England, 30-year-old Mills signed exclusively for Cage Warriors earlier this year, following a four-fight stint with the UFC.

“I can’t wait to get back in the cage and entertain the fans,” Mills said. “My opponent is well-rounded and I expect an explosive match. I’m also looking forward to visiting Bahrain and I thank Cage Warriors for the opportunity.”

Hucin (9-3) will be keen to stake a claim for a shot at the vacant CWFC middleweight title as he goes in search of his fourth Cage Warriors win in five outings.

The 25-year-old missed out on a shot at the belt last year after a unanimous-decision loss to Victor Cheng in the semi-finals of Cage Warriors’ title tournament, which was Hucin’s only defeat in his last eight bouts. He booked his semi-final spot after a first-round KO of recent Bellator ‘Fight Master’ contestant Gareth Joseph.

The Frenchman returned to winning ways by overcoming John Michael Sheil last October, before most recently submitting former KSW champion AntonI Chmielewski at CWFC Fight Night 8 this past May.

The charismatic Parisian said: “I’m in great shape for this fight because I’ve been working hard. I’m looking forward to dancing in the sunshine and putting on a good show.”

SHANE MOSLEY VS. ANTHONY MUNDINE IS OFF

Pacquiao_Mosley_weighin_110506_004a
LOS ANGELES (October 21) – Scheduled to face Anthony Mundine at the Sydney Entertainment Centre in Australia on October 23, boxing superstar Sugar Shane Mosley will instead be going home after a breach of contract by the event’s co-promoter, Millennium Events, prompting his withdrawal from the fight.

“I’m very disappointed with this turn of events because I was planning on making a big statement by beating Mundine, but I was left with no choice but to withdraw,” said Shane Mosley. “The fans in Australia have welcomed me with open arms, and I hope to return to fight for them one day in better circumstances.”

“It’s unfortunate that this fight will not be taking place, and we apologize to all of Shane’s Australian fans, but there are contracts in place for a reason, and when the terms are not adhered to, we have no choice but to protect our fighter, and that’s what happened here,” said Richard Schaefer, CEO of Golden Boy Promotions.

THE ULTIMATE FIGHTING CHAMPIONSHIP® & THE CENTER JOIN FORCES FOR HIV AWARENESS

Las Vegas, Nevada – The Ultimate Fighting Championship® and the Gay and Lesbian Community Center of Southern Nevada (“The Center”) have announced a dynamic new partnership, designed to raise awareness of the realities of HIV among young individuals under 30.

In the 1990s, there were major breakthroughs in both the treatment of and education about the HIV pandemic. Because of anti-viral drugs, HIV is no longer the death sentence it once was; and because of the tremendous mainstream media focus on the disease in the 1990s there was an educated population who practiced safe sex. The result was infection rates fell significantly.

Over the last 15-years complacency has set in, however, resulting in a younger generation ill-informed about the dangers and realities of the disease. The Center for Disease Control and Prevention stated the ignorance of young Americans on the realities of HIV and AIDS is “shocking”, “astonishing” and “just unacceptable”. Last year, half of the 50,000 Americans infected with the disease were under the age of 30.

The UFC and The Center are now picking a fight with that ignorance by launching an awareness campaign called “Protect Yourself At All Times”.

UFC COO Ike Lawrence Epstein said: “As someone who grew up in the 1980s and saw the virus beaten back with education in the 1990s, I was stunned to learn from our friends at The Center that HIV is still having such a dramatic impact on young people. No other sport reaches the under 35 demographic like the UFC does and the UFC felt a duty to try and do something about this situation. It gives me great pride to announce the UFC will be partnering with The Center, LBGTQ+ and other organizations for a project we are calling “Protect Yourself At All Times”. This will be a local, national and ultimately international campaign designed to educate the UFC’s vast core audience of under 35s about the realities of HIV.”

Robert (“Bob”) Elkins, CEO of The Center, said: “HIV stopped being a ‘gay issue’ long ago but, unfortunately, it has now very much become a ‘young issue’. The jarring fact is that young gay men are becoming infected at a much higher rate. The lack of both awareness and accessible information for teenagers and young adults is truly frightening. It’s like the 1990s never happened in terms of education and public awareness. In the UFC, we have the perfect partner to fight this ignorance, and we thank them for joining us in this battle.”

Elkins, who is openly HIV positive after contracting the virus 27 years ago, added: “When I first found I was HIV positive, my friends and family thought it was a death sentence. But I wouldn’t accept that and started anti-retroviral treatment which I’ve continued ever since. Today, my viral load is virtually undetectable, thanks to my doctors and the meds. But through education and medical advances we began to fight back against the disease. Living with HIV is manageable, but we cannot allow advancements to take away our focus on preventing new infections through public awareness and education.”

Protect Yourself At All Times has two key messages:

· Get tested; know your status

· Protect yourself with safe sex practices

UFC Hall of Famer Forrest Griffin will serve as a spokesman for the campaign. He said: “I had 15 fights in the UFC Octagon during my career, and before each and every one of them, I had a HIV test. I’m encouraging everybody to show themselves and their partners the same respect I showed my opponents by getting tested and protecting themselves at all times.”

UFC No.5 ranked women’s bantamweight Liz Carmouche, who is also a spokesperson, added: “There’s a feeling of invincibility that comes with being young, with being fit and the prime of your life. But I learned when I was in the US Marines just like I’ve learned as a UFC fighter, no-one is invincible, and that you have to project yourself at all times.”

The on-going Protect Yourself At All Times campaign will be rolled out during the lead-up to World AIDS Day on December 1 and will include:

· The UFC will fully support The Center’s LGBTQ+ programme, which offers free HIV tests to the wider Las Vegas community

· UFC athletes and personalities visiting centers nationwide who offer free HIV tests and educational initiatives

· The UFC will be creating public service announcements which will be distributed across its powerful media platforms

· The UFC will also be donating promotional inventory to the campaign, beginning with a full-page ad in next month’s UFC 360 magazine, and ask its partners to donate similar space to raise issue awareness.

For more information on The Center’s efforts with LGBTQ+ visit www.lgbtqpoz.org.

Peter ‘Kid Chocolate’ Quillin Reaches Animal Status

Peter Quillin
NEW YORK (October 21, 2013) – The odds are heavily in favor of Gabriel Rosado (21-6, 13 KOs) hitting the canvas at least once this Saturday night during his world title fight challenge against undefeated World Boxing Organization (WBO) middleweight champion Peter “Kid Chocolate” Quillin (29-0, 21 KOs), airing on Showtime Championship Boxing, live from Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, New Jersey.

WBO No. 11-rated Rosado going down has less to do with the quality of his chin or durability, rather a credit to Quillin’s awesome power.

Quillin’s 29 opponents have been dropped a total of 31 times, including an amazing 10 knockdowns in his last two fights, both in world championship competition, against Fernando Guerrero (4 knockdowns) and former WBO champion Nassan N’Dam N’Jikam (6 knockdowns). “Kid Chocolate” also dropped future Hall of Famer Ronald “Winky” Wright, in Quillin’s fight prior to him challenging N’Jikam, which ended in a unanimous 10-round decision that sent Wright into retirement.

“I get paid to give 12 rounds of action,” Quillin said. “I am a performer in the ring and I’ve trained hard to be a power puncher. At times I’ll take a punch to give back a few of my own. I have power to knockout my opponent with my right or left, at any point of a fight. Earlier in my career, a lot of my knockdowns and knockouts came in two rounds or less, but I had 10 knockdowns in my two world title fights. No matter how many times they get up, I’m going to keep knocking them down.”

Quillin (L) working with his head trainer, Eric Brown

What explains Quillin’s propensity to knockdown his opponents so often?

“Animal status,” Quillin’s head trainer Eric Brown quickly answered. “Peter is a beast! He is very solid, focused and a fundamentally sound fighter, who can knock you out with either hand. He’s very hungry and appreciates what it really means to be world champion.”

For more information about Peter “Kid Chocolate” Quillin go online to www.TheKidChocolate.com (Team Kid Chocolate T-shirts on sale here) or follow him on Twitter @KidChocolate and Instagram@KidChocolate.

Braehmer gets home advantage in world title bid

Fantastic news for Juergen Braehmer (41-2, 31 KOs): When the current European Light Heavyweight Champion tries to become a world champion again, he will do so with the crowd standing behind him. On December 14, the 35-year-old southpaw from Germany will meet American Marcus Oliveira (25-1, 20 KOs) for the WBA World Title at the Jahnsportforum Neubrandenburg, Germany.

“That’s great,” Braehmer stated happily, when he got confirmation on the location. “Although, I have never stepped inside the ring in Neubrandenburg as a pro before, I heard about the times when Sebastian Sylvester fought here. The people are very enthusiastic and it is well known that there is always a chance of a sold-out house. I hope to get the same kind of support as Sylvester and that the crowd will push me to another world title.”

Kalle Sauerland is also delighted to present another highlight in Germany after having tough negotiations with Don King over it. “2013 has been a great year for Juergen Braehmer, he has made a great comeback and become European Champion,” said the 37-year-old promoter. “This will be a tough challenge against an undefeated KO puncher in Oliveira. Still, our goal was to guide Juergen to another world championship and we are confident he will make Germany proud!”

Oliveira will try to derail Braehmer’s world title ambitions. The 34-year-old, who is ranked 2nd by the WBA, banks on the support of Don King (82). The US-promoter has already announced to be ringside on December 14, keeping his fingers crossed for his prodigy to be victorious.

Tickets for the WBA Light Heavyweight Championship fight in Neubrandenburg, Germany will be available soon at www.eventim.de.

WORLD SERIES OF FIGHTING 6 CONFERENCE CALL HIGHLIGHTS

LAS VEGAS (Oct. 21, 2013) – World Series of Fighting hosted a media conference call on Monday with “World Series of Fighting 6: Burkman vs. Carl” headliners Josh Burkman (26-9) and Steve Carl (20-3), as well as main-card competitors Marlon Moraes (11-4-1), Carson Beebe (14-2), Jon Fitch (24-6-1), Marcelo Alfaya (15-4), and preliminary card headliner Miguel Angel Torres (40-6).

“World Series of Fighting 6: Burkman vs. Carl” takes place Saturday, Oct. 26, at BankUnited Center at UM in Coral Gables, FL. The evening’s four-fight main card airs live on NBC Sports Network beginning at 9 p.m. ET/6 p.m. PT. A full lineup of preliminary bouts will also stream live on World Series of Fighting’s official website, WSOF.com beginning at 6 p.m. ET/3 p.m. PT and venue doors open at 5 p.m. ET.

Tickets for the fight card, which start at just $29, are available at all Ticketmaster locations, Ticketmaster.com and charge-by-phone at (800) 745-3000.

The following are fighter highlights from the conference call:

RAY SEFO:

“I’m super-excited about the event, but mostly I’m very excited for Josh Burkman and Steve Carl, as this fight will be our first world title. I’m very excited about that. We’ve got some great fighters on the card, and I look forward to an exciting show.”

JOSH BURKMAN:

“My camp went really well. I’m excited for this because I was a part of the very first World Series of Fighting, and I’m excited to be a part of the first title shot. I’m looking forward to the challenge that Steve Carl presents, but I’m more prepared than ever for this fight. I know it’s going to be an entertaining card and a good show.”

(At 8-1 in your past nine fights, what do you credit for your recent success?)

“After the UFC, by taking that year off, I really just changed my lifestyle. I had a back injury, and I was told by three different surgeons that I should get surgery and I shouldn’t fight anymore. I had a herniated disc in my neck. I had four bulging discs in my back. I had arthritis, and I had nerve damage. Taking that year off, I had to change everything I did about my diet. I quit drinking. I quit going out. I started going to bed earlier. I really just changed my whole life.”

(What would a title win mean for you?)

“I think it will be a feeling of accomplishment. Any time that you have something taken away from you and people tell you you shouldn’t do it and you change your life and live a way that you can come back and get healthy, I think winning a championship would complete that comeback. It’s just a great sense of accomplishment, and moving forward, I would be proud to represent this organization.”

STEVE CARL:

“I’m super-excited for this event. I’m not only really excited to fight for the title and to be able to fight Josh Burkman in the main event, but I’m excited for the rest of the card, also. I’m really looking forward to watching some of these matchups. I just can’t wait for this weekend, and the colder it gets up here in Iowa, the more excited I get to leave and go down there to Miami.”

(Do you feel like you’re being at all overlooked coming into this fight?)

“I’m good with the way things are going. I think if people are looking at this thinking Josh Burkman is getting more hype and more credit going into this fight, well he deserves it. Look at the three wins he just put together. Josh Burkman is coming into this fight as a favorite, and I’m completely OK with that. That’s fine with me because at the end of the day, I’m still going to be that cage with him, and I’m still going to be in that fight. No matter what anybody says, he still has to beat me, and I still have to beat him, and that’s the bottom line.”

(What were your initial reactions to receiving the matchup?)

“When they told me about it, I was super-excited. I have wanted to fight Josh Burkman since last year when we fought on World Series of Fighting 1. He was on a roll, and he was just climbing the world rankings. That’s what I want to do. Since then, Josh Burkman has really shot up there, and now he’s considered to be one of the best in the world, and I can’t be more excited to want to compete with him.”

MARLON MORAES:

“I’m ready. I trained harder than ever, and I’m looking forward to it. This is a great opportunity. My opponent is a tough guy. You look at the fights and see Josh Burkman, Steve Carl, Jon Fitch, Marcelo Alfaya, Miguel Torres – all those guys fighting on the same card – for me, it’s a pleasure. I’ve spent hours watching those guys, and now I’m here fighting.”

(You had a few injuries in your last fight. Are you fully recovered?)

“I’m feeling great. My body is all recovered. I got hurt a little bit, but I’m ready 110 percent.”

CARSON BEEBE:

“It’s a huge honor being on the card. I’m fighting a very top-tier opponent. Just to be on the same card as all these guys on here, it’s a bunch of legends on the show, so I just want to say thanks to World Series of Fighting and Ray Sefo for giving me an opportunity to go out there and put on a great show. I’m going to give it everything I’ve got in the cage on Saturday night.”

(How has your preparation been for this fight?)

“This is going to be probably the biggest fight of my career, so I’ve been training that way, and I’m ready to bring it. I think it’s going to be a fight that’s worthy of co-main event status, so I’m excited.”

JON FITCH:

“I’m super-pumped for the fight. The whole card is stacked all the way through. World Series of Fighting is doing an outstanding job with putting on these cards and these shows. NBC Sports Network is a fantastic platform for doing good numbers on the live shows and the replays. The organization is only going to keep growing and keep getting stronger. The guys on the undercard are going to start being main-card guys, and everybody is going to know who they are. I’m excited to be a part of this, and I’m excited to help along with this growth. I can’t wait for this fight. I know Marcelo is going to bring it, and it’s going to be a hell of a fight.”

(With your recent loss, is there more pressure now to win?)

“I always feel that I need to win. I wouldn’t be in this sport if I didn’t feel I needed to win every single fight. I want to go out there and perform well, perform the way I can, and put myself in a position to get even bigger fights in the future.”

MARCELO ALFAYA:

“I’m excited for this fight. I’m training hard. Jon Fitch is a tough guy. Thank you so much to World Series of Fighting for giving me this opportunity. Thank you Jon Fitch for taking this fight. I think it’s going to be one great fight.”

MIGUEL ANGEL TORRES:

“I’m happy to be on the card for World Series of Fighting 6. I’m happy they were able to get me on. I’ve been in this sport 15 years, and I’ve seen a lot of organizations and I’ve fought for a lot of different places, and they’re one of the organizations that are growing. They’re going to get to the top, and I’m happy I can be a part of that process. Preparations have gone very well for this fight. I’m looking to get back in there and get some respect – get back to the top where I was before.”

(Where have you been during this long layoff?)

“I’ve been real busy since the last World Series of Fighting. My lease was up on my gym. I had a gym in Hammond, Ind., and I went back and was doing my taxes, and I saw how crazy my overhead was. So I had to make a change if I wanted to sustain profits in my gym. So I had look for a new location, and I found a spot close to my home. My daughter was starting was school, so I wanted to make sure that I was around for that. And as I was doing the move to the gym, I found out it was riddled with mold crawling all through the installation, so I had to basically do a lot of work to remodel the whole gym. So basically the whole summer I spent training and doing carpentry work and laying down a new floor for the new gym. I made that move in July, and then I started training again in August. I got the call from World Series of Fighting to come back and take a fight, and I want to get back in there and start fighting again. I’ve been out for a while, and I missed it. I just can’t wait to get back in there and show what I can do.”

TOP RISING TALENT TO STEP INTO THE RING ON SHOWTIME EXTREME® TELECAST IN ADVANCE OF OCT. 26 IBF LIGHT HEAVYWEIGHT WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP BETWEEN BERNARD HOPKINS AND KARO MURAT

ATLANTIC CITY, NJ (Oct. 21) – Before the legendary Bernard “The Alien” Hopkins defends his IBF Light Heavyweight World Championship against top contender Karo Murat on Saturday, Oct. 26, top talent from the East Coast and Puerto Rico will open the event on SHOWTIME EXTREME® and put their stellar records on the line against hungry opponents looking to make a name for themselves at Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, NJ.

Taking to the ring in undercard action will be unbeatens Zachary Ochoa, Robert Easter, Dominic Wade and Bryan Cruz, as well as Puerto Rican prospect Braulio Santos.

With a perfect 4-0 (3 KO’s) record thus far as a pro, Brooklyn’s Zachary Ochoa is making plenty of noise in the area. Returning to the site of his first-round knockout of Michael Salcido last November, Ochoa recently scored a shutout four-round decision over Calvin Smith in April. He will face York, Alabama’s Michael J. Doyle (2-5, 1 KO) in a four-round junior welterweight bout.

In a six-round contest, it’s a clash of featherweight prospects when Carolina, Puerto Rico’s Braulio Santos (10-1, 9 KO’s) faces San Diego’s David “Thunder” Clark (6-2, 4 KO’s). The 23-year-old Santos is looking to rebound from the first loss of his career against Derrick Wilson in June, while two-time U.S. Olympic team alternate Clark has won four straight dating back to 2011.

One of the most highly anticipated bouts on the undercard will pit Toledo, Ohio’s Robert Easter (7-0, 7 KO’s) against 22-year-old Noel Echevarria (11-1, 6 KO’s), who hails from Winston-Salem, North Carolina by way of Guayama, Puerto Rico, in an eight-round lightweight bout. The 22-year-old Easter has made short work of his professional opposition, only entering the third round once. The southpaw Echevarria gave unbeaten Emanuel Gonzalez a tough go in his last bout on September 30, earning him another big fight against Easter.

The only thing that kept Largo, MD’s Dominic Wade (12-0, 9 KO’s) from participating in the 2008 Olympics was his age. The four-time Golden Gloves champion was undeterred and turned pro in 2009. Now the 23-year-old is one of the top super middleweight prospects in the game. On Oct. 26, he will face Villahermosa, Tabasco, Mexico’s Roberto Ventura (13-7, 12 KO’s) in an eight-round bout.

Opening the event, will be two up and comers, as Port Chester, NY junior lightweight Bryant Cruz (7-0, 5 KO’s) and Newburgh, New York’s junior welterweight Wellington Romero, who will make his professional debut, will face opponents to be named in six and four round contests, respectively.

Hopkins vs. Murat is a 12-round bout for Hopkins’ IBF Light Heavyweight World Championship, presented by Golden Boy Promotions in association with Caesars Atlantic City, Corona and AT&T. In the co-main event WBO Middleweight Champion Peter Quillin puts his title on the line against Gabriel Rosado in a 12-round bout. Plus, opening the tripleheader, WBC Continental Americas Heavyweight Champion Deontay Wilder will face Nicolai Firtha in a 10-round showdown. The SHOWTIME CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING telecast begins live at 9 p.m. ET/PT and is available in Spanish on secondary audio programming (SAP). Preliminary bouts will air live on SHOWTIME EXTREME® beginning at 7 p.m. ET/PT.

Tickets priced at $300, $150, $75, $50 and $25, not including applicable service charges, are on sale now and can be purchased at the Boardwalk Hall Box Office, all Ticketmaster locations, by calling 800-736-1420 or at www.ticketmaster.com.

Skoglund clinches EU Light Heavyweight Title with points win over Mock

Erik Skoglund (18-0, 9 KOs) is the new EU Light Heavyweight Champion after an impressive points victory over Danish veteran Lolenga Mock (31-14-1, 12 KOs). The 22-year-old Swede stamped his authority on the battle early but found himself on the receiving end of a huge right from Mock in the third. However, he proved his chin as he beat the standing count and regained composure. He dominated the rest of the fight, working cleverly behind his jab and throwing well-timed combinations. The scores were 118-110, 116-112 and 117-110. “I am proud of Erik,” promoter Nisse Sauerland said. “That was a great win against a very strong opponent. Erik really proved his class tonight. There are great times ahead, for him as well as for Swedish boxing.”

Said Skoglund: “It feels great to win the title. It was a very tough fight but our plan worked well. He hit me in the third but I have a good chin and regained control quickly. I knew afterwards that if he can´t stop me with his best punch, I will win this fight because I have the skills to beat him.”

Said Mock: “It was a good fight. Erik is a good fighter. He has a very good chin. I wanted to finish him in the third round but couldn´t. Erik has a good range and moves well and he spoiled my rhythm. He is a good champion.”

Dennis Ceylan won his eight professional fight, defeating experienced Italian Emiliano Salvini. Salvini´s corner threw in the towel in round six. Kim Poulsen dominated all 8 rounds against fellow Dane Puriya Haidari. All judges scored the fight 80-72.
