“New Date for Abu Dhabi Boxing Extravaganza

Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, October 14, 2013–The first-ever live professional boxing event scheduled for Abu Dhabi,Thursday Night Fights @ Yas Island, is being postponed.

Event promoter Lion Heart Boxing Productions forced to reschedule the October 17 fight due to unavoidable circumstances beyond its control. Says, CFO Edward Mendy, “Though we had several other issues, we had no choice but to postpone the show as four African fighters on the card did not get visas. The UAE has one of the easiest visa application processes in the world. Typically, a visa takes two days unless complicated by the applicant’s CID investigation. Thus, we did not worry about the visas, did not apply for visas sufficiently early and were blindsided by Eid. All government offices in the UAE are closedOctober 10 through October 20 for Eid. The visa issue cost us both main events. The opponent for Williams (Mazur Ali) is from Egypt and while the opponent for Ouali (Ebenezer Lamptey) is from Ghana. Additionally, we lost two other fights (the Braxton and Mesquita fights). Thus, We decided to reschedule rather than put on a subpar show with only local fighters since we had major television with ESPN3, Abu Dhabi Sports and several other TV channels contracted to air the fights.”

Thursday Night Fights @ Yas Island is rescheduled for December 19, 2013 at the 5,000-capacity du Forum, located on Yas Island in Abu Dhabi. The du Forum is managed by Global Spectrum, one of the leading venue management companies in the industry.

Thursday Night Fights @ Yas Island will be streamed live on ESPN3 worldwide except the MENA Region, where it will be geoblocked. Further, Thursday Night Fights @ Yas Island will be televised live, and in primetime, by Abu Dhabi Sports in the UAE and MENA Region, and will be syndicated regionally and in other markets, as feasible, including in over 100 Million American cable homes. With Yas Island and Abu Dhabi as a new home to the Thursday Night Fights series, the UAE has the chance of experiencing ‘live’ why Thursday Night Fights uses the slogan “the Best Fight Series of all Times’.

Warriors Re-Signs ‘Mantequilla’ Gonzalez to Promotional Agreement; Puerto Rican Slugger Relocates to Florida

Leon Margules, President of Warriors Boxing, proudly announces the signing of Puerto Rican junior middleweight contender Jonathan “Mantequilla” Gonzalez (16-0-1, 13 KOs) to an exclusive promotional contract.

Despite being considered a red-hot power-punching force in the 154-lb division, promotional problems had kept the 24-year-old Gonzalez out of the ring since last January. Margules says after a couple of return fights, Gonzalez will step directly into a high-profile showcase.

“We’ve relocated him from Puerto Rico to Florida to train. He’s 100% focused now and ready to live up to his reputation as the ‘Next Puerto Rican Superstar,'” said Margules. “We’re going to let him shake off some ring rust, starting December 6 at the UIC Pavilion in Chicago and then go to work getting him a title shot or an important fight to get back in the mix.”

Gonzalez had run up a streak of 13 consecutive knockouts to begin his career, drawing comparisons to a young Tito Trinidad, before going the distance in his last four fights, including a draw with former world champion Serhiy Dzinziruk. One of the goals for the newly refocused Gonzalez will be to return to his past power-punching ways.

“This kid is a true old-time fighter,” added longtime boxing expert Luis DeCubas. “He’s slick, but he can punch. That’s what he’ll be working on with his trainers, John David Jackson and Chico Rivas: sitting down on his shots more and going back to the destroyer he was earlier in his career. Now that he’s in Florida training full-time, he’s a lot more focused and away from the distractions back home. He’ll be coming in on-weight and ready to go.”

As an amateur, Gonzalez had over 160 fights and won a silver medal at the 2007 Pan American Games and qualified for the 2008 Summer Olympics. As a professional, he has held the NABO and WBA Fedelatin titles and was named to ESPN Columnist Dan Rafael’s Super 25 list of the best prospects of 2011.

“Jonathan has all the talent and experience to become a star,” continued Margules. “We’ve made several adjustments to his training routine, including the relocation. We think a Jonathan Gonzalez who is focused and without distraction is a formidable force in one of boxing’s best divisions.”

Gonzalez’s opponent for December 6 in Chicago is still TBA. In the 12-round main event tha tnight, WBC Cruiserweight Champion Krzysztof “Diablo” Wlodarczyk (48-2-1, 34 KOs) of Warsaw, Poland, will attempt to make the sixth defense of his title and complete an epic trilogy of fights with Milan, Italy’s former WBC Cruiserweight Champion Giacobbe “Gabibbo” Fragomeni (31-3-2, 12 KOs).

Tickets for “World Championship Boxing: Wlodarczyk vs. Fragomeni 3” are priced at VIP $201, VIP Ringside $151, Ringside $101, Box Mezzanine $76, Reserved Mezzanine $51, and General Admission $31 and can be purchased through Ticketmaster (Ticketmaster.com, 1-800-745-3000), the 8 Count Productions Offices: 312-226-5800 or the UIC Pavilion Box Office: 312-413-5740.

Molina Throws Out First Pitch at U.S. Cellular Field

Carlos Molina
On Monday night, September 23, newly crowned IBF Junior Middleweight Champion “King” Carlos Molina threw out the Ceremonial First Pitch at U.S. Cellular Field before the Chicago White Sox played the Toronto Blue Jays.

Molina was presented with a custom White Sox Jersey before the game and was given a strong ovation by the fans in his hometown of Chicago. A long-time underdog in the sport, Molina finally overcame the adversity to win his first world title via split decision against Ishe Smith on the pay-per-view televised undercard of Mayweather vs. Alvarez on September 14.

“That was a dream come true,” said Molina after throwing a perfect strike. “I want to thank the Chicago White Sox organization and all the fans for being so kind. I will always make you all proud.”

Molina is currently rumored to be making his first defense on premium cable in December.

Manager Adrian Clark making waves at just 27

Dallas, TX (OCTOBER 14, 2013)– Adrian Clark is one of the youngest boxing managers/advisors in the sport today (27). He began his career with Jerry “The Corpus Christi Kid” at 24 years old. “I knew nothing about the industry. I didn’t know anyone, I had no connections, a part of me wondered what the hell Jerry was thinking asking me to be his manager. We made it work though”. Clark who is a graduate of Texas A&M-Corpus Christi has a Bachelor’s Degree in Communication (Public Relations/Media) and a minor in Business. In his 4 years at A&M-Corpus Christi he competed in the amateur ranks competing in 3 regional Golden Gloves tournaments. “I knew I was not going to be a pro boxer, I fought because I love the sport and I thought it would be my way into the business and it turns out it helped more than the punches hurt.”

Almost in his 4th year of managerial duties, Clark represents Jerry Belmontes 18-2(5KO’s), Ramsey Luna 11-0(4KO’s) and advises Eric Hunter 17-3(9KO’s). Hunter and Belmontes dueled in a 10 round bout in Philadelphia last December with Eric Hunter walking away with a big win. He has most recently blemished not only his record but his reputation with his recent DQ against Mike Oliver; his second DQ in a title fight. Belmontes came back from his first defeat (to Hunter) to dismantle Daniel Diaz (20-5) in his hometown of Corpus Christi. In April, Jerry faced hard punching Andrew Cancio and was upset by Cancio in 10. Ramsey Luna, Clark’s recent signee is coming off of a TKO win versus Anthony Navarro (1-5) and is looking to step up in competition, let alone a shot at a promotional contract.

“I’m fortunate to have the opportunity to work with this group of talented guys. My focal point with these guys is to get them to understand what it is to be a professional athlete. Emphasis on professional. I want my guys to be fan and media friendly. We all have work to do but each of these gentlemen have the ability and talent to be world champions. My job is to boost their image, make sure they’re articulate, properly media trained and setting a good example for the younger guys coming behind them. Eventually their boxing careers will end, they’ll be remembered for what they did in the ring and what type of individual they were… I want my guys to be remembered as upstanding, respectable guys”.

Eric Hunter is slated to fight Nov 15 in Philadelphia, opponent TBD. Jerry Belmontes is looking to return in December, Clark and Golden Boy are in talks currently and Ramsey Luna is looking to fight in November.

Cohen Congratulates WBA #3 Fletcher for Win Over Kanofski

Promoter Greg Cohen of Greg Cohen Promotions would like to congratulate Queensland, Australia’s WBA #3 middleweight Jarrod “Left Jab” Fletcher (17-1, 10 KOs) for his wide unanimous decision over Tim Kanofski (12-7, 1 KO) at the Calabria club, in Melbourne, Australia last Friday.

Waiting patiently for his big opportunity, Fletcher controlled the action in a stay-busy matchup.

Cohen says his man is being talked about for a shot at the winner of the upcoming WBA championship fight between champion Gennady Golovkin and Curtis Stevens, scheduled for November 2 at Madison Square Garden.

“Jarrod Fletcher is in a position for several big fights right now and we’ll be looking to get him into them as soon as possible,” said Cohen. “Not only is he a strong possibility for the winner of Golovkin/Stevens, he’s also got former champs Daniel Geale and Anthony Mundine for huge All-Australia showdowns. It’s a good time to be Jarrod Fletcher right now.”

Woge promises entertainment against Dudchenko

October 26 will see a lot of title action at the EWE Arena in Oldenburg, Germany. Overall, there will be four belts on the line. On paper, the most entertaining might very well be IBF Intercontinental Champion Robert Woge’s (12-0, 10 KOs) mandatory defense against Anatoliy Dudchenko (18-2, 13 KOs).

Light heavyweight banger Woge, who is never in a dull fight, seemed to step up his game since winning his first belt as a professional in February, stopping Hakim Zoulikha in eleven rounds. Four months later, the 29-year-old knocked down unbeaten Dariusz Sek in round one enroute to a unanimous decision win. “Against Sek I proved to my coach Mr. Wegner that I can follow his game plan over the complete distance of a fight,” said Woge. “I feel more and more comfortable under his tutelage. There is still room for improvement and I will show the world that I can do even better on October 26.”

However, it is not going to be easy against Ukrainian Dudchenko. “He is a lanky guy with good reflexes. In addition, he can punch a bit. Our styles will make for an entertaining fight. A win in Oldenburg will bring me closer to the top of the world rankings.”

Dudchenko sees this bout also as an opportunity to get in line for a world title shot. “I moved to the USA to fulfill my goal of becoming a world champion one day,” the prodigy of Ruben Chavez said. In his eyes, Woge will be just another victim. “He is talented but it’s far too early for him to fight me – believe me when I say it will be like a father beating his son.” Dudchenko’s confidence stems from the people around him. “I’m training with WBA World Middleweight Champion Gennady Golovkin at Big Bear, California. To be the best, you have to work with the best!”

So action will be guaranteed when Woge and Dudchenko collide on October 26.

Tickets for the big fight night at the EWE ARENA Oldenburg, which also sees Arthur Abraham, Jack Culcay and Marcos Nader fighting in title bouts, can be purchased at www.eventim.de and www.boxen.com.

Alexander to defend against Porter on November 30th

Devon Alexander
IBF Welterweight champion Devin Alexander will defend his crown against Shawn Porter on November 30th in San Antonio according to Dan Rafael of espn.com

In the co-feature Super Bantamweight titlist Leo Santa Cruz will fight Cesar Seda.

“I am saying [Alexander-Khan] is not happening and I’m going to be exploring some other opportunities for Amir,” said Golden Boy CEO Richard Schaefer. “That’s all I am prepared to say and I have nothing to say about Floyd Mayweather.

“But Amir wouldn’t have gone to training camp if it wouldn’t have been to get ready for Devon Alexander. There is no question he was planning on fighting Devon and we were planning on the fight. Now Team Khan and me are exploring some other opportunities. Whether they happen or not, I don’t know.”

“Devon is a pro and when he realized the Khan fight was not going to happen, he was OK. He is the kind of fighter who fights anyone. We have some of the other 147 pounders who were busy with other fights over the next two months, so we can see the winner of Alexander-Porter fighting the winner of some of the other fights.”

“Shawn Porter wanted an opportunity for a big fight and here it is. Let’s see what he can do,” Schaefer said. “This is his chance. I believe in giving fighters opportunities. He has a chance at a world title and I’m sure he will make the best out of it. I think he deserves a shot. I try to give our guys an opportunities to fight for a world title if I can. I can only give him them an opportunity. It’s up to them to capture the moment and show the world what they can do.

Judah – Malignaggi square off in an all Brooklyn battle on December 7th

Zab Judah
According to Dan Rafael of espn.com, former world champions Zab Judah and Paulie Malignaggi will square in an all Brooklyn showdown on December 7th at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn.

“That’s their home and they want to be No. 1 at home,” Golden Boy Promotions chief executive Richard Schaefer told ESPN.com on Friday after finalizing the fight. “I think it’s a fascinating fight. This is about pride. These guys do not want to lose in front of their home crowd, especially to another guy who is also from their hometown. So it’s about pride, Brooklyn pride. It’s the Battle of Brooklyn.

“I think the fight could have been made for more money for us, but it’s made now and it’s a fight the fans still want to see. We’re going to battle for Brooklyn,” Malignaggi told ESPN.com. “We’ve circled each other’s orbit for a long time.”

“When you saw Paulie fight Adrien Broner in June, that was the best Paulie Malignaggi we’ve seen in a long time even though he didn’t get the decision,” Schaefer said. “And when Zab Judah fought Danny Garcia, same thing. So now they’ll fight each other, and if they both fight as well as they fought in their last fights, this is going to be a great fight.

“It never happened. I know it’s surprising,” Malignaggi said. “I think I sparred everyone else there was to spar in New York. I think it’ll be a good fight. I know it’s hard to pick a winner. There are advantages for both of us. We’ll get the answer on Dec. 7.”

In the co-feature, Schaefer said that interim junior middleweight titlist Erislandy Lara (18-1-2, 12 KOs), 30, a Cuban defector living in Houston, would face fellow southpaw and former titleholder Austin Trout (26-1, 14 KOs), 28, of Las Cruces, N.M., in a matchup of slick boxers

“Most people have Lara and Trout in their top-10 rankings at 154 pounds and it’s a 50-50 kind of fight,” Schaefer said. “Trout is coming back to New York where he beat Cotto and he’s ready to go. Lara is coming off a big win against Angulo and taking on another top guy. It’s a meaningful matchup between two of the best 154 pounders and the winner is in line for a big fight.”

Schaefer said a third bout — while not officially on the card yet — probably will open the telecast and feature super middleweight titlist Sakio Bika against Anthony Dirrell in a match that had been scheduled for Oct. 26 but postponed because Bika hurt his shoulder and had to miss some training time.

“The fight is done, but I’m still in discussions with Showtime about making the card a tripleheader,” Schaefer said.

Nader puts EU Title on the line against Crespo

October 26 will be a first for Marcos Nader (17-0-1, 2 KOs). On that date, the Austrian middleweight will have his premiere title defense. Back in April, the 23-year-old secured the EU Championship with a win over Roberto Santos. In Oldenburg, Germany he will once again lock horns with a Spaniard when he meets Luis Crespo (9-5-1, 4 KOs) inside the ring.

“Winning my first title in the professional ranks was something special,” remembers Nader. “However nothing is more transient than yesterday’s glory. Currently I am fully focused on defending my belt against Crespo. That is the only thing I am thinking of at the moment.”
Regarding his upcoming opponent, Nader believes that he has a tough challenge ahead of him. “Crespo is a few inches taller than me and is also fighting southpaw. You can believe me when I say that it was very hard to get some good sparring partners to prepare myself for this fight,” said the prodigy of coach Otto Ramin. “The key to victory is to get close to him and work on the inside.”
In contrast, the 32-year-old challenger from Madrid knows about Nader’s best asset. “He has really good hand speed and moves well,” knows Crespo, who was a former kick-boxer before switching to boxing. “Dedication will be the deciding factor in this fight. The one who wants it more is going to take the belt home.”
Tickets for the big fight night at the EWE ARENA Oldenburg, which also sees Arthur Abraham, Jack Culcay and Robert Woge in title-action, can be purchased at www.eventim.de and www.boxen.com.

ROMAN MORALES VICTORIOUS AT CHUMASH CASINO

SANTA YNEZ, CA (June 14, 2013) – Tonight Gary Shaw Productions presented another great night of boxing at the Chumash Casino Resort. In the main event, Roman Morales (17-0, 10 KOs) defeated Robert Castaneda (20-4-1, 15 KOs) by way of unanimous decision to retain his “Central Coast Championship”.

In the early rounds Morales was using his superior boxing skills to get in position to land his shots. Castaneda was confused as Morales was switching stances throughout the fight. Morales dropped Castaneda in round five and everything was going his way. Things changed in round seven when Morales got caught with a left hook to the head. Morales gained his composure, but Castaneda gained confidence going into the final rounds. But Morales got back in control and finished off the fight landing hard blows to the head and body. Scorecards read 97-91 across the board for Morales.

“I felt I could have finished the fight in the early rounds but I couldn’t get him out of there,” said Morales. “Castaneda fought very tough and I take my hat off to him for continuing to fight after I dropped him. I got caught with a punch I didn’t see coming but I got back on my feet and finished the fight throwing hard punches. This was a great learning experience and I’ll be back in the gym to work on my craft. I want to thank Gary Shaw for giving me another opportunity to showcase my skills. I’ll be ready when they call my name.”

Undercard Results

(6-round Featherweight bout) – Serrano used his height and reach to counter the attack of Batres in the early rounds. Although Batres landed an overhand right that dropped Ruffino Serrano in the first round, Serrano controlled the action for the remainder of the bout until the referee stopped the bout at the 2:37 of round four. Serrano recorded his first knockout of his career. Ruffino Serrano (13-5, 1 KO) defeats Pablo Batres (4-8-1)

(8-round Featherweight bout) – Edwin Solis and Gabriel Tolmajyan engaged in a classic southpaw vs. conventional matchup. Tolmajyan was countering the attack of an aggressive Solis. Tolmajyan was landing pot shots as Solis was doing his best to land an overhand right. Both fighters entered the final rounds neck and neck and it seemed that Tolmajyan was winning the bout, but the judges saw it different as the bout was declared a majority draw. Scorecards read 76-76 twice and for 77-75 Tolmajyan. Gabriel Tolmajyan (13-3-2, 3 KOs) majority draw vs. Edwin Solis (5-2-2, 3 KOs)

(4-Round Light Middleweight bout) – In an all out brawl, Eric Prado and Julian Cruz let their hands go for four hard fought rounds. There weren’t many jabs thrown in this fight as both fighters were trying to land power shots throughout the bout. Cruz was the more aggressive fighters and seemed to be landed the more damaging shots. Prado had his moments going to the body, but it was Cruz who came up on top winning a unanimous decision. Scorecards read 39-37 across the board in favor of Cruz. Julian Cruz (2-2) defeats Eric Prado (2-4-1)

(6-Round Light Heavyweight bout) – Ilsthat Khusnulgatin used his superior boxing skills to dominate a game Arenio Terrazas. Khusnulgatin had a distinctive height and reach advanced and he used it to perfection as he battered Terrazaas around the ring for four rounds. Khusnulgatin wins by TKO after Terrazas could not return for the fifth round. Ilsthat Khusnulgatin (11-0, 6 KOs) defeats Arsenio Terrazas (9-6, 8 KOs)

(4-Round Lightweight bout) – – In a battle of aggressive lightweights, Daniel Franco and Manuel Romero went toe to toe for three competitive rounds but it was Franco who landed the cleaner shots. In the fourth round Franco landed a flush left uppercut that sent a tired Romero to the canvas and the referee stopped the bout at the 44 mark of round four. Franco wins by knockout. Daniel Franco (5-0-2, 3 KOs) defeats Manuel Romero (0-2)

Broner – Maidana card to feature three world title fights

Adrien_Broner_1
According to Dan Rafael of espn.com, three world title fights will be featured on an an explosive card that will be headlined by WBA Welterweight champion defending against Adrien Brone on December 14th at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas and will be available via Showtime Pay Per View.

The fight, long in discussions, will headline a loaded card, which also includes the return of former welterweight titlist Victor Ortiz from an 18-month layoff, on Dec. 14 (Showtime PPV) at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Golden Boy Promotions chief executive Richard Schaefer told ESPN.com.

“This is one of the best fights you can make in boxing. It’s a fight we were asked about time and again by media and fans,” Schaefer said. “They kept asking me, ‘Can you make that fight?’ It was like when I was being asked if I could make Mayweather-Canelo Alvarez and Danny Garcia-Lucas Matthysse. It’s one of those fights that everywhere I went people were asking me, ‘Are you going to get it done?’ Well, I got it done.”

“Props to Broner to stepping up to the plate and taking on a guy like Maidana with huge knockout power and to Maidana to take on a guy people discuss as a future pound-for-pound star,” Schaefer said. “It’s as hot of a fight as you could make in any division. I’m excited about the fight. It has fireworks written all over it.”

“Maidana is a hell of a fighter. He will come to fight but, at the end of the day, this is my breaking point into taking over boxing and I will not let this guy kill my vibe,” Broner told ESPN.com. “The game is mine and I am the best. My big brother Floyd got a few more fights left (and then) I will carry the torch and sit on top alone.

“I’m not just a boxer. I’m a megastar, and now I’m about to become a pay-per-view megastar. I’m not cocky. I’m very confident in the skill I was blessed with and I want everybody to come out and support me at the MGM Grand and watch on pay-per-view on Dec. 14.

• In the co-feature, Ortiz, 26, of Oxnard, Calif., will move up to junior middleweight to challenge titleholder Carlos Molina (22-5-2, 6 KOs), 30, of Chicago, who will be making his first defense after outpointing Ishe Smith to win the 154-pound title on the Mayweather-Canelo Alvarez undercard on Sept. 14.

Ortiz (29-4-2, 22 KOs) has not fought since suffering a badly broken jaw in a ninth-round knockout loss to Josesito Lopez in June 2012. That was Ortiz’s second loss in a row as he was knocked out by Mayweather in the fourth round of their high-profile bout in September 2011.

While his jaw was healing, Ortiz participated on “Dancing With the Stars,” and he has recently been filming a role in “The Expendables 3.”

“Victor’s jaw is healed and he’s good to go,” Schaefer said. “He’s excited about coming back and fighting for another world title in a division which is one of the hottest in the sport.”

• Interim welterweight titlist Keith Thurman (21-0, 19 KOs), 24, of Clearwater, Fla., will face Jesus Soto Karass in a fight that pits aggressive brawlers.

“On paper, this is a fight of the year candidate,” Schaefer said.

Thurman claimed his belt in July by stopping Diego Chaves in the 10th round of a slugfest.

Soto Karass (28-8-3, 18 KOs), 30, of Mexico, has won four of his last five bouts, including two upsets in a row, a decision against contender Selcuk Aydin and a 12th-round knockout of former welterweight titlist Andre Berto in July.

• In the opening bout, Mexican brawler Alfredo Angulo (22-3, 18 KOs), 31, will square off with Puerto Rico’s Jorge Melendez in a junior middleweight fight.

“Somebody’s gonna get knocked out,” Schaefer said. “And if Angulo loses again, it’s a huge setback.

“It don’t remember any pay-per-view that we’ve done with this kind of lineup where all you don’t really know the winner of any of the bouts,” Schaefer said.

Mabait destroys Garcia inside a minute

Marvin Mabait scored a first round stoppage over Johny Garcia in a scheduled twelve round Bantamweight bout in Salon, Mexico.

The two fighters were in the middle of a flurry and it did not look like Garcia got hit with much of a punch but went to the canvas holding his eyes and was counted.

Mabait, 118 lbs of the Philippines is now 19-1-2 with 13 knockouts. Garcia, 118 lbs of Ciudad, MX is 18-5-1.

Iran Diaz (6-0-2) win a eight round split decision over Angel Aguilar in a Bantamweight bout.

Gabriel Acosta (3-0) won a four round unanimous decision over Antonio Lopez in a Bantamweight bout.

Irvin Marin (3-0) scored a four round unanimous decision Fernando Perez in a Super Featherweight bout.

Antonio Moran (11-0, 6 KO’s) scored a 1st round stoppage over Oscar Conde (3-7) in a Lightweight bout. Moran dropped Conde once from a right hand and then when he got up, Moran jumped all over him before the fight was stopped.

Toronto – Fight Network, the world’s premier 24/7 television channel dedicated to complete coverage of combat sports, will present a live broadcast of Golden Boy Live! this Monday, October 14, at 9 p.m. ET, from BB&T Center in Sunrise, Florida, headlined by unbeaten junior middleweight Jermell “Iron Man” Charlo against New York City southpaw Jose Angel “Silver Boy” Rodriguez.

In the co-main event, in a clash of unbeaten fighters, 2012 U.S. Olympian Errol Spence Jr. will be back in the ring as he faces off against fellow undefeated welterweight Emmanuel “Ice Cold” Lartey.

“Rodriguez is a tough veteran who has definitely fought quality opposition,” said Charlo. “It’s my job to make him look like an amateur and get him out of there. That’s what I plan on doing on October 14.”

“This is a great opportunity and I thank Golden Boy Promotions and FOX Sports 1 for making this happen,” said Rodriguez. “Now it’s up to me to get the job done and I’m more confident than ever that my hand will be raised.”

“We are very much looking forward to bringing the Golden Boy Live! series to the BB&T Center,” said Richard Schaefer, CEO of Golden Boy Promotions. “One of the best parts of consistently hosting this Monday night fight series, is the opportunity to showcase up and coming fighters in different cities so that fight fans across the country have the chance to see great fights live.”

Charlo vs. Rodriguez, a 10-round junior middleweight bout, is presented by Golden Boy Promotions and Sunrise Sports & Entertainment and sponsored by Corona and O’Reilly Auto Parts. The BB&T Center doors open at 7:00 p.m. ET with Fight Network’s live broadcast kicking off at 9 p.m. ET.

Houston’s Jermell Charlo (21-0, 10 KO’s) has stepped up big time in 2013, winning both the WBC Continental Americas and USBA Junior Middleweight Titles with his victories over Harry Joe Yorgey and Demetrius Hopkins, respectively. Now hoping to keep his unbeaten run intact when he battles the upset-minded Rodriguez, the 23-year-old “Iron Man” promises a performance to remember when he competes in front of the nation on FOX Sports 1 and FOX Deportes.

A versatile veteran who has won five of his last six bouts, 34-year-old Jose Angel Rodriguez (17-2-1, 2 KO’s) is coming off of back-to-back victories over Russell Jordan and Denis Douglin that have him in fine stead heading into the biggest fight of his career against Charlo on Oct. 14. And given his southpaw style and experience, “Silver Boy” can certainly make it a tough night for the hot prospect in Florida.

Also added to this six-bout card are Spence Jr.’s Olympic teammate Rau’shee Warren of Cincinnati and undefeated Puerto Rican hot prospect Jeffrey Fontanez. In the previously announced 10 round super weltereight main event, Jermell “Iron Man” Charlo will challenge New York City southpaw Jose Angel “Silver Boy” Rodriguez.

The event will also feature a special guest appearance by boxing superstar and former world champion Roy Jones Jr.

Errol Spence Jr. (8-0, 7 KO’s) is a 23-year-old versatile southpaw who has shown impressive power in his professional career. Hehas had a spectacular 2013 campaign thus far, winning all six of his bouts, with the last four victories coming via first-round knockout. On Oct. 14, the 2012 U.S. Olympian from Desoto, Texas will attempt to add to his winning streak.

A native of Accra, Ghana now fighting out of Brooklyn, NY, 32-year-old Emmanuel “Ice Cold” Lartey (16-0, 8 KO’s) has drawn positive comparisons to his home country’s greatest boxer, Azumah Nelson, for his style in the ring and remains undefeated in his eight-year professional career. A former Ghanaian and African Boxing Union champion, Lartey’s two most recent bouts have seen him win by decision over fellow prospects Michael Anderson and Jonathan Batista.

The first and only boxer to earn his way onto three U.S. Olympic teams, Rau’shee Warren (15-0, 3 KO’s) is now pursuing a world championship as a professional and he’s off to an impressive start. Winning five bouts in 2013, the 26-year-old from Cincinnati, Ohio was in top form in his most recent effort on Sept. 2, knocking Omar Gonzalez down five times on his way to a six-round unanimous decision victory. On Oct.14, he will face Fresno’s Michael Ruiz Jr. (9-3-1, 3 KO’s) in an eight-round contest.

Twenty -year-old lightweight Jeffrey Fontanez (12-0, 9 KO’s) is the latest prospect to emerge from the island of Puerto Rico and it appears that this Caguas-native has all of the right tools to succeed in the ring. Fontanez also has shown plenty of poise and knockout power in his 2013 wins over veteran competitors Daniel Attah and Alejandro Rodriguez

Also in action on Oct. 14 will be some of Florida’s finest in four round battles when Tampa’s welterweight Willie Jones (2-0, 1 KO) faces off against Jose Angel Segura (2-4-2, 1 KO) of Miami and Ruskin, Florida welterweight Martin Lagunas Jr. will make his pro debut against Ft. Lauderdale’s Larry Yanez (3-6-2).

PHILADELPHIA, PA (October 11, 2013)— Black Eye Promotions presents “King of the Coal Fields 9”, Friday, October 25, 2013 at the Madison Civic Center in Madison, West Virginia. In the main event, two natives of the mountain state step into the ring for the Universal Boxing Federation (UBF) US-Northeast and West Virginia heavyweight championship. WARREN “THE HITMAN” BROWNING(17-3-2, 12 KO’s) of Lenore, West Virginia clashes will WILLIAM “WILD BILL” SHAHAN (9-5, 8 KO’s) of Glenville, West Virginia in a scheduled 10 round bout.

Browning fought twice for the WBC United States (USNBC) title, once at cruiserweight and once at the heavyweight division. On July 13, 2013 Browning fought to a draw for the vacant West Virginia heavyweight title against three time state titlist BOBBY THOMAS JR. The fight was a back and forth match that not only impressed the fans in attendance but it also caught the eye of the UBF’S RICHARD SPILOTRO.

“I was very impressed with Browning’s last outing; the fight against Bobby Thomas was a great fight, as a fan I would love to watch the “Rubber Match” between the two, but Browning will face the hard puncher Bill Shahan and both fighters have something to prove, the UBF is humbled to have these two warriors face off for our regional title.” – Said Spilotro

Shahan is hoping that with the proper training and dedication, he will be able to derail Browning and hold up two heavyweight titles in victory. “Wild Bill” fought twice before for regional titles and came up short twice, both times against the then undefeated Justin Howes. Shahan is working towards his Master’s Degree in Administration and is currently employed as a Mathematics teacher at Braxton County Middle School.

He lives in Clarksburg along with his wife and they are expecting a baby girl in November. Shahan stated, “Not too many people get the opportunity to achieve their dream, but I am getting my third chance before my baby girl gets here.” He is the son of William and Barb Shahan.

PETER “KID CHOCOLATE” QUILLIN VS. “KING” GABRIEL ROSADO MEDIA CONFERENCE CALL TRANSCRIPT

Quillin206
Kelly Swanson
We are on the phone today with WBO Middleweight World Champion Peter “Kid Chocolate” Quillin and “King” Gabriel Rosado. They will be facing each other in the co-main event on October 26 at Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City. This is a great show. Of course, everybody knows that Bernard Hopkins is the main event against Murat, and exciting heavyweight Deontay Wilder will also be on the show. So, we’re looking forward to hearing from the fighters today. We have them both on at the same time so without further ado, I’m going to turn it over to Robert Diaz, Golden Boy Promotions Matchmaker, to make the formal introductions. Robert?

Robert Diaz
Thank you very much, Kelly. Thank you to everybody for being on the call. Before we get started, I want to make a couple of announcements. Saturday, October 26 at the Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, New Jersey; promoted by Golden Boy Promotions. I want to thank our sponsors Corona and AT&T and, it will be from Caesars in Atlantic City. Produced and distributed live by Showtime Championship Boxing beginning at 9:00 p.m. Eastern/Pacific, and the event can be heard in Spanish using secondary audio programming. Now, I’d like to start introducing the fighters. Obviously, those who know, out of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, know that the fighters come to fight. Joe Frazier, Bernard Hopkins and “King” Gabriel Rosado holder of wins over Jesus Soto Karass, Sechew Powell, Kassim Ouma and Charles Whittaker. Rosado has also been in the ring with Gennady Golovkin, Alfredo Angulo and J’Leon Love. On October 26 the “King” will do whatever it takes to win the middleweight crown. Gabe, would you like to make some opening statements please?

Gabriel Rosado
Thanks for having me and looking forward to this fight. I’m having a terrific training camp so I’m just excited for October 26.

R. Diaz
Thank you, Gabe. He will be facing none other than Peter “Kid Chocolate” Quillin out of Brooklyn, New York with a record of 29-0-21 knockouts, the WBO Middleweight World Champion. When he defeated former champion Hassan N’Dam in a memorable performance where he dropped N’Dam six times at the Barclays Center on October 20. This past April, Peter Quillin successfully defended his title for the first time dropping Fernando Guerrero four times in route to a seven-round technical knockout. On October 26 Quillin will face Rosado in his second title defense and he will do whatever it takes to defend that title. Peter, would you like to make some comments please?

P. Quillin
Yes. I just want to thank everybody that’s going to be tuning in watching this fight, all the hard working people behind the scenes that make this fight possible, all my people, Al Haymon, and, you know, the list goes on. I’m very thankful, and I’m going to do my best to make sure that you get fireworks in the month of October.

K. Swanson
Okay. Thank you so much, guys. All right, we’re going to cruise right through here and we’ll open it up for questioning.

Q
Hey, Peter, in your mind right now, where do you think you rank among the world’s great middleweights?

P. Quillin
I would place myself second behind Sergio Martinez. I’ve been calling Sergio Martinez out from day one when everybody didn’t think I was a serious fighter. I would place myself number two only because I was willing to fight all the guys that Gennady Golovkin is fighting, Matthew Macklin. I was willing to fight Gennady Golovkin, but a lot of things and a lot of business hold back a lot of these things, but I just know that I’m going to fight hard whatever place I am to be number one, be the number one middleweight in the United States and be number one middleweight in the world.

Q
Are you hopeful of-not to look past Gabriel Rosado, I’m going to ask you about him in a second because he’s a tough dude but-are you hopeful of getting the chance to prove that at some point by unifying the titles with somebody like a Martinez or Golovkin?

P. Quillin
Of course that’s one of my dreams, to be a unified champion and I reconstructed my goals after I won the title to say that that’s the next mission that there’d be a unified champion. So, I can only take one day at a time and Gabriel Rosado is in front of me. He’s a very tough cookie to crack and I’m going to make sure that I do everything it takes to go ahead and stay on my goal path.

Q
All right. Well, you kind of told me what you thought about Rosado so let me ask you this, Peter. At what point in your career did you realize that you had something special going? And you are a terrific fighter, by the way.

P. Quillin
Well, I can just say that from the beginning my dream was always become a world champion. Once that happened I knew I would fight. Okay. I accomplished what I really wanted. Now where do I go from here? And that’s when I started to notice that when you become a world champion it becomes a special thing because you’ve got little kids telling you that they’re inspired by you and not inspired to be a champion but like lawyers and doctors and stuff like that. Then I knew that was something special so now I know I have a responsibility to know what I do is just go out there and I work even harder to make sure that every time I go out and defend this belt I’m defending it with all that pride, that honor, and all the kids that are watching.

Q
This question is for “Kid Chocolate.” Earlier this week you said in an interview that Gabe knows how to lose, and I thought that was an interesting comment because a lot of people when they look at Rosado he’s known for his toughness. He’s known for not quitting. So what have you seen in him to make you make a statement like that where you think that you know when the going gets tough he might fold in there in the ring with you?

P. Quillin
I’m not saying he’s a loser in spirit. I’m just saying based on facts and on paper that he knows how to lose, meaning he has six losses at the end of the day. I haven’t had a taste of defeat so my hunger and his hunger are coming from different places. His hunger will always fight from not wanting to lose again. My hunger is never to want to taste defeat. So, when people were thinking I was saying like he’s not tough enough and he knows how to lose, I mean it in a way that only people that will have a thinking mind will be able to put that in to perspective. I’m saying that with six loses on his record, if he ever got a moment in a fight with me where he felt that feeling before he can choose two ways. He can choose to fight on or he can choose to lose.

Q
Gabe, I wanted to get your thoughts on that but I also wanted to ask you, you said yesterday on Twitter that this fight is going to be a war and we’ve seen your last couple of fights that you’re very versatile. When you fought J’Leon Love you took the fight to him. When you fought Golovkin, you actually showed the counter punch. So what about “Kid Chocolate” you think that this fight is going to be a war the way you guys match up?

G. Rosado
I mean he doesn’t have to quit … and neither do I. I mean and I just have a different approach to this fight and my mindset is at a place that I don’t think it’s ever been in my whole career. I’m growing up, being smarter, and I just have a whole different mentality going in to this fight, and I feel like this fight is all or nothing, and I’m willing to go through hell to win that title on the 26 like literally. I’m willing to go through whatever it takes to win that belt.

Q
Question for Gabriel Rosado, I know that your mentor and one of your guys you most respect is Bernard Hopkins. How do you fell about fighting on the same card with him?

G. Rosado
You know what I never thought that would happen. I remember when Bernard fought Calzaghe, that’s when I first started being around Bernard, and at that time they were calling him old, and so I thought by the time I get there to that level Bernard will be retired. The fact that he’s still fighting at the age of 48 and he’s a world champion is amazing. I don’t think that will ever be done again. So, you know, the fact that I’m opening up with “Kid” and Bernard is the main event is just something special. Bernard has definitely been a big influence in my career. He’s taught me a lot and I think my different approach to my career, the approach I’m taking now has a lot to do with what Bernard has taught me mentally and how to live your life outside of the ring, and I take those things to heart because he’s a great champion. It means a lot being on the same card with Bernard Hopkins.

Q
Okay. Do you feel like this fight is a must win for you?

G. Rosado
That’s how I feel about every fight. You can look at the record and you see the six losses and at this point that’s history. That happened already, but I think it says a lot of the fact that I’ve been through all that adversity. The fact that I’m still here and I’m still relevant it speaks volumes because not too many fighters had loses and are still relevant and the fans going to see them. A lot of guys would have quit, and they wouldn’t have taken the road that I took. I mean so it just shows that I have the heart and the desire to be a champion, and I think with all the experience and everything that I’ve been through is going to prepare me for this fight mentally and physically and everything that I have to do. I’ll be ready October 26.

Q
Okay. Now your last fight against Love you had a good fight. It was a close fight. Many people thought you should have gotten the decision. He got the decision. I know that ultimately things were, the result was changed, but what did you learn in that fight? I mean against “Kid Chocolate” you’re fighting a terrific young champion, big, strong, game guy. How will you fight him in this fight and will that last fight, you know what have you learned in that fight? How will you adjust in this one?

G. Rosado
Yeah. I think one thing I’ll admit is the mistake that I made in the Love fight was I looked at the J’Leon Love fight as an opportunity to get a world title fight. I kind of went in to that fight with Love as I’m a veteran and he doesn’t have the experience, and I kind of just convinced myself I would be schooling him in that fight, and I didn’t go in to that fight with a-I should have had more of a killer mentality like how I’m going in to this fight. I think I kind of fought to my level. Sometimes fighters make that mistake and they fight to a certain level, and I just felt like Love wasn’t at my level and I kind of just was tagging amuck. And I think if I would have had the approach that I have now going in to the fight with “Kid” where I know “Kid” is a great champion my attitude, my whole demeanor, the way I’m training is I’m training for war. I’m going in to this fight like it’s all or nothing. You know what I mean? But you know everyone knows I won the Love fight anyway so that’s why I’m here, so I’m blessed that everything worked out anyway.

Q
Hey, Gabe, obviously Peter Quillin is the naturally bigger guy. He’s a guy coming in with the physical strength and the explosive power, and I just wanted to ask you where do you feel your advantages are in this matchup?

G. Rosado
Well, this being the third fight at middleweight my body has actually grown in to a middleweight right now. I’ve been walking around 176. Right now I’m down to probably like 172 so I’m a bigger guy now.

Q
You don’t look at yourself as a junior middleweight fighting a middleweight?

G. Rosado
Honestly, man, I think that junior middleweight the only way I would ever go back to junior middleweight is if it was something worth my while, but just to go back down I wouldn’t do it because I think probably now naturally I’m a middleweight. I think I’ve grown in to it. I think with the GGG fight, I was going up from 64 and I only came in like 163 the day of the fight, and then for the J’Leon Love I kind of felt a little more comfortable, but this time around I’m a lot bigger. I’m a lot stronger. I feel it in my training camp, sparing bigger guys and sparring cruiserweights. I definitely feel the size advantage and I have strict coach where I put more mass on, so I don’t think “Kid” is going to have an advantage when it comes to size.

Q
Do you think you have the advantage when it comes to technique or ring generalship?

G. Rosado
You know I think when it comes to technique I think I flow better with my punches. I think “Kid” is a strong puncher. He’s a raw guy, but I think at the end of the day this fight is going to come down to who is the smarter fighter and who has better skills. I think “Kid” has the will to win and I’ve got the will to win and that’s just going to make it such an action packed fight, but at the end of the day the smarter guy is going to win the fight.

Q
Who do you think has the better experience? I mean, “Kid Chocolate” he’s got some title fights under his belt now, and the fight with N’Dam was 12 rounds and it was a tough challenge. But do you see yourself as having the edge having been in with more champions this time?

G. Rosado
I don’t take anything away from “Kid.” He’s a world champion, right, but as far as names I feel like I’ve fought better names. He fought ‘Winky’ Wright and ‘Winky’ was a great champion, but ‘Winky’ Wright came out of retirement. He wasn’t the ‘Winky’ Wright of old. Guerrero beat me and he beat Guerrero but that fight was-I mean Guerrero was almost was about five years ago so it really doesn’t matter. But I think at the end of the day it really doesn’t matter. Kid is going to come and bring his A game and I’m going to bring my A game and the best man is going to win.

Q
Watching his last two fights, watching the fight with Guerrero and watching the fight with N’Dam did you see any flaws whether it was technically or in terms of just his conditioning? Did you see any flaws that you can take advantage of?

G. Rosado
I think every fighter has flaws. No one is perfect. I have flaws. He has flaws. Everyone has flaws. The key is to make them pay for their flaws so you have to be a smart fighter. I definitely do see flaws in “Kid.” I’m pretty sure he sees some flaws in my game. You know the whole thing is just to do your homework, study film, and then what you study do it in training camp, and then pull it off the day of the fight.

Q
I know you’ve been spending a lot of time with Bernard. How special is that for your career and is there anything that stands out that he’s been able to teach you over the past few years?

G. Rosado
You know Bernard is incredible. He’s like- I look at Bernard like family and it’s a blessing to be around him. I definitely steal everything I see from him. I mean I think it’s made me a better fighter being around him. It’s just a blessing man. I think I wouldn’t have gotten this far without Bernard mentoring me.

Q
And do you think that-I know you haven’t won your last two fights but you’re still getting a world title shot. Does that speak a lot for how much boxing fans want to see you fight?

G. Rosado
Yeah. I think with the GGG fight it was a hard loss and it hurt, but I think the fans they just respect that. I think they respect the fact that even though I was pretty much fighting the fight blind I think they admire the fact that I didn’t quit. Then with the J’Leon Love fight everyone knows that I won that fight, so the fans spoke. I’m glad that Showtime and Golden Boy and “Kid Chocolate” are giving me the chance to fight because they saw that I did win the last fight even though they didn’t give me the fight that night but the fans, we won.

Q
And that Golovkin fight being your first world title shot is there a difference the second time around with your second world title shot that you’re a little bit more focused and more calmed down in the situation?

G. Rosado
Yeah. I’m a lot more focused. I’ve changed some things in my lifestyle that weren’t healthy. I’m a young dude. I’m single. I was probably partying a little too much. I was probably taking it to the head. Sometimes you know you’re on TV and you have some money, people know you and you kind of lose track and I’m man enough to admit that. But at this point I’ve sat down and I’ve had that talk with myself where it’s like, “Oh, God, it’s all or nothing,” like “You either want to be an entertaining fighter or you want to be a world champion.” I had that talk with myself that it’s time to be a world champion so I’m doing whatever I have to do to fulfill that dream.

Q
Okay. Well, I just wanted to know if it was going to made note of it’s almost basically a year today of Hurricane Sandy ravaged New Jersey so would anything made not of that before the fights in Atlantic City on the 26?

K. Swanson
I’m sure something is being planned, and we’ll probably distribute a release on that.

Q
This question is for Gabe Rosado. After the conclusion of the Golovkin fight you were interviewed and you mentioned that you considered yourself a real threat at 154, but after that you fought J’Leon Love at middleweight and now “Kid Chocolate.” Why move up in weight when there are still opponents that are right there ready at 154?

G. Rosado
We tried to make a run for 154 but we weren’t successful getting a fight for whatever reason, but I think weight is a mentality. I think you can make it be a factor or you can just say whatever. It’s just a fight. I’m not going to be looking at this fight like it’s only six pounds. It’s not a big deal. I’m a big guy anyway. As a junior middleweight I was always the bigger man so it’s not like I’m a small dude. If anything “Kid” and I are probably the same height. We’re probably walking around at the same weight right now, so there’s no disadvantage in this fight. It’s an even fight as far as when it comes to size, and it is what it is. Things play out the way they play out and it wasn’t my time when I fought GGG but I feel like it’s my time now.

Q
Okay. Thanks, Gabe. And then, I have a question for “Kid Chocolate.” Until last night the tone between the two of you has been very level, very respectful and quiet until it kind of blew up a little bit on Twitter lasts night. Was there something that you noticed that sparked that or was it a little gamesmanship just to hype up the fight?

P. Quillin
Well, I know Gabe and personally I don’t have a problem with him at all. You know what I mean? But he’s still going to try to come in and win my belt. He made comments about knocking me out. Those types of things I don’t have to take lightly. I’m going in there with the same mentality. When somebody was born with two fists and they became a fighter he wasn’t the last fighter that was born and breed, you know what I’m saying. I’m going to take it for what it is. A lot of the Internet stuff the fans get us involved and all that type of stuff is kind of emotional for a fighter, to have some guy saying what he’s going to do to a person. So, like I said I don’t have a problem with him. I know him. I will shake hands with him before the fight, and then after the fight, but while the fight is going on I’m going to just try to lay hands on him.

Q
I’ve got a question for each of you. First, Gabe, your last two fights Madison Square Garden and the big Mayweather fight, Mayweather card in Las Vegas. Now you’re going back to a place where you’ve fought many times and have won many times. Is that a little bit of a calming effect on you compared to your last two fights?

G. Rosado
This fight could be in the middle of nowhere. It really don’t matter, but Atlantic City is like fight in my-it is like fighting in my backyard because it’s only a 45 minute drive from Philly. In Philadelphia alone each of my brothers bought about almost $20,000 worth of tickets so a lot of people in Philly are excited. Bernard is from Philly so he’s going to have a big Philly fan base as well. It’s like fighting at home, but that’s really not on my mind. I’m just thinking about the fight. I’m thinking about and I’m thinking about the game plan.

Q
And then one for Peter. How would you rate him compared to your last two opponents, N’Dam and Guerrero?

P. Quillin
He’s a different fighter. He’s at a different place in his life. I have to give him that respect. I’m not knocking anything away from him. I look at him like every other guy that I’m against is a guy that’s trying to beat me and I have to find a way to win.

Q
Gabe, you’ve been in the ring with GGG and you definitely felt the strength of his punches. What did you learn from that fight and what are you going to take with you in the ring with Peter that you learned from that?

G. Rosado
You know what I learned in that fight was I went in to that fight-even though I was the smaller man in that fight and I wasn’t as big as I am now, I kind of went in to that fight with that mentality. I’m the little guy and I kind of approached the fight with GGG trying to box. I think that was a mistake. I think I should have just stuck to what I do best, which is what I was doing at 54. I was just walking buys down, and I was just like fighting like the bigger guy. I think I did learn that stay true to your ring identity, don’t try to switch up. If it isn’t broke don’t fix it, and I’m just going to go back to my style of just applying pressure, being smart and not letting the guy back me down. I think that’s what I learned in that GGG fight.

Q
Hey, your last few fights have been in Brooklyn. How do you feel about fighting outside of your home turf and kind of in Gabe’s backyard a little bit?

P. Quillin
It’ll be interesting to see how many people will follow me to AC, but not only that I always said it best is that if I have three people watching in my mom’s back room, we had a fight in my mom’s back room I’d be happy with that. I’m a fighter. I can’t just worry about all the pressures of who is going to come, where I’m fighting. I think to inspire the world you have to be able to fight everywhere so I’m glad to have Golden Boy bringing me to AC and being part of a great card, part of Bernard Hopkins, a guy that I always watched as a young kid. I’m just going to make the best of this opportunity.

Q
Peter, also another question, what have you been doing differently in camp this time around to prepare for your battle with “King”?

P. Quillin
I took more control of my whole camp, brought guys in like Julien Williams from Philly, you know, Daniel Livingston. I got a bunch of guys here and just being motivating to have guys here, let little kids come and be part of the camp and workout and be inspired. Took my work level up and elevated myself mentally. I’m going out there a\whenever I feel like I want to do it. I do it every day. I just get it in. I’m in the gym just putting effortless work in, that’s all I have is effort. At the end of the day, when it comes to this fight I’m just very blessed to be able to get in the ring and showcase my talent.

Q
This first question is for Gabe. Gabe, earlier you mentioned that it would take a big fight for you to move back down to 154. What fighters at 154 would you consider going back down to?

G. Rosado
I mean not to down play your question but we’ll get to that once I take that pendant on the 26 because I don’t want to talk about other fighters and mention names when I’ve got the biggest fight of my life coming up on the 26. Right now I’m just thinking about “Kid Chocolate.”

Q
Fair enough. My next question for you, Gabe, you already actually answered it but you said your brother sold about 20,000 tickets in Philly so you are, indeed, expecting a large crowd of family, friends, and fans in Atlantic City?

G. Rosado
Yes. It’s definitely going to be big. I’m undefeated in Atlantic City. I fought there a couple of times and I have a big fan base over there, so it’s definitely going to be a big crowd. I’m going to make sure that I do everything I can to give them their money’s worth.

Q
And Peter, what are the difficulties that Gabriel presents to you in this fight, and what do you plan on doing about those difficulties so this fight can go your way?

P. Quillin
Well, I learned something as being a fighter; you only can win one round at a time. I’m going to go up in there. I’m going to figure him out every round. I’ve seen a little bit of Gabe as far as who he fought and everything like that. I don’t get too involved with that. I just know when you’re in there a guy fights totally different and you actually have to learn the guy right there in the ring and that’s what I’m going to do. So far as being presented with any problems, I haven’t been presented with any problems in my whole career in boxing. I’ve been an undefeated pro for nine years, and I’ve been up in there with some, some would say not enough guys that give me experience but you can’t do something for nine years and not know what you’re doing. I’m going to go up in there and learn Gabe one round at a time, and I’m going to come out victorious in this fight October 26.

Q
And what does it feel to fight on the undercard of Bernard Hopkins, a fighter just like you who was middleweight champion for many years?

P. Quillin
It’s very legendary, man. Bernard Hopkins I’ve just been a big fan of his. Even when he fought my favorite fighter Felix Trinidad and he beat him the way he did I was like you can’t get mad at something like that when a guy puts out greatness like that. So just being part of this whole card is just like magical and I’m very blessed to be a part of this card because I’m going to learn so much about myself through this card, and I think to go to the sky you’ve got to be able to be part of certain situations and certain opportunities where guys have been in the same place where I’m at now. Bernard has been there and done that and I think I’ve learned so much from him from when he speaks to me and gives me knowledge, and this is just a great card to be part of and I’m glad to be part of it.

Q
Do you feel coming in to this fight you have to be a little less aggressive for the judges since you were on the short end of their scorecard against Love?

G. Rosado
I’m not going to-the truth is, unfortunately, boxing is like that. You saw with the fight with Chavez and Guerrero. I am the underdog going in to this fight, and I understand that. When I signed the contract I knew what I was getting myself in to so I know that I have to approach this fight a lot differently. I’m not the favorite. I’m the underdog so I definitely have to win every round. I can’t give up rounds in this fight. I have to fight hard at a big pace to be victorious. If it goes all 12 I have to make sure that I get the decision. I have to really put a lot of effort in to this fight, and I’m confident about that. No disrespect to “Kid” but this fight isn’t going to go 12 rounds because I’m training for a knockout. I’m really not tripping off of the judges whatever is going to happen because it isn’t going to go to the scorecards.

Q
All right. Knowing that in Peter’s last two fights he had ten total knockouts does that put any-I don’t want to say fear but any thought in your training process because I know you are an aggressive fighter? Does that change your mentality towards how you approach him?

G. Rosado
No not really. He’s a big puncher and I’m a good puncher as well. I’m saying in 2012 all my wins were by knockout. I went up and I fought GGG. Unfortunately I didn’t win that fight but I fought J’Leon Love. I put him down in the 6th round as well so I’ve got power too. This is not a fight where it’s just “Kid” that’s tracking. We’re both tracking. He has to respect my power just like I’ve got to respect his.

Q
Thanks. One more for Peter. Peter, quick question, with you being able to have a lot of knock downs in the last two fights and the fact that Rosado came in with GGG widely considered the best pound-for-pound puncher in the class power wise and basically Rosado was able to walk him down. Did that put any thought in to your training process as far as the way you plan on approaching the fight?

P. Quillin
No because I’m not GGG. I’m a whole totally different cut breed, man. Like I am raw. I’m like straight off the Columbian boats. I’m that raw. When it comes to comparing myself I’m not matching anybody else’s performance and Gabe was fighting a totally different guy. He says the fight is going to a knockout and he’s not going to the scorecard I really, honestly see that but I don’t believe it’s going to be me that’s going to be the one that’s taking defeat, knocked out. I just know that I’ve just been training very, very hard for this fight. I know what I’m able to do. I’m not comparing my performance to anybody. I’m not trying to match my performance. I’m going to do “Kid Chocolate” that’s all I know how to do, and with my last three fights people count for that too but they don’t count the last three where it’s been 11 knock downs. Everyone I touch they have a different approach, and once I touch them it’s not the same, and I’m praying for Gabe that’s he’s able to go up there and put his best foot forward because that’s all he can do, and when that’s not enough he’s just going to have to shake hands and going to have to accept defeat because that’s what I’m going to deliver.

K. Swanson
Okay. That wraps it up, everybody. Thank you for joining us, and we will be sending out some more information on this fight including some activities for next week. You guys, thanks so much, Pete, Gabe, and we will see you very shortly, October 26 so keep training hard. We look forward to watching the fight.

P. Quillin
Good luck, Gabe. I’ll see you in October.

G. Rosado
Stay healthy all right.

K. Swanson
Bye, everybody.

BOXER SULEM URBINA ADDRESSES HER BROTHER’S DEATH

PHOENIX, ARIZONA, U.S.A. – On September 5, 2013, seventeen-year-old Alexis Urbina, a 2013 USA Boxing National Champion and USA National representative at 141 pounds, died from injuries sustained in an attack at his home. Authorities continue to investigate his case as a homicide. His twenty-three-year-old sister, Mexico’s amateur boxing standout, Sulem Urbina, would like to share the following statement:

Many of you know that my brother, Alexis Urbina, was found beaten last month in my family’s home, in Phoenix, Arizona. It has taken me some time to gather my thoughts, but I am ready to speak out about this tragedy. I would like to thank everyone who has supported my family in this time of crisis. Many friends and members in the boxing community have helped with fundraisers and made donations to cover funeral costs. Some brought over cooked meals. Thank you to all the media who covered this tragedy, and for continually asking the public to help find who may be responsible.
I was not prepared for something like this to happen. My brother and I trained together at Knockout Boxing Club in Phoenix, Arizona, with my husband, and coach, Andrews Soto. We were all extremely close and spent a lot of our free time together. My brother Alexis was always smiling, telling jokes, and trying to make everyone laugh. He had a large group of friends, but he did not associate himself with a crowd that could get him into trouble. I am not aware of any problems he had with any groups of people or any individuals.
On Tuesday, September 3, 2013, Alexis stayed home from school, because he was planning to enroll in an online school program. The online program would have allowed him to attend more national and international boxing competitions, while still allowing him to get his schoolwork completed during his boxing trips. My mother, Consuelo Ochoa, came home from work and found my brother badly beaten, lying on the living room floor, gasping for air. From there, he was rushed to Good Samaritan Hospital. I rushed to the hospital with my husband, and we both soon realized the severity of his injuries. I was devastated, and there wasn’t anything that I could do to help my brother.
The doctors at the hospital said that my brother had severe swelling throughout his entire brain from the attack. On September 4, 2013, Alexis was pronounced brain dead. His body was still alive, because he was in great physical condition, but doctors told us that it was only a matter of time before he would expire. The hospital staff allowed us to remain at my brother’s side until he passed away. On September 5, 2013, my husband and I left the hospital to return home to shower and change clothes. While at home, I received the call from the hospital that my brother died. We drove back to the hospital, and said our goodbyes to my brother.
My initial thoughts were that the people who had killed my brother should be brought to justice. Our family doesn’t know anyone capable of doing something like this. If anyone knows anything, please contact our local authorities, Silent Witness in Phoenix, Arizona, with your tips or leads. The number to call is (480) 948-6377.
A few days after my brother’s funeral, things began to slowly get back to normal. I’ve returned to my college classes, but at times, it is still really hard to concentrate. Homework takes longer to complete, and studying can be difficult. Life keeps going, and I’ve been taught that maintaining a strong work ethic is the right way to handle adversity. I also returned to training again in the gym, but it doesn’t feel the same without Alexis there. He encouraged me to work hard, because it would help increase opportunities for myself, and my sport. We had plans in place to make all of our dreams a reality.
We wanted to be the first brother and sister boxing duo to qualify for the 2016 Olympic games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Alexis would have represented Team USA, and myself, Team Mexico. We knew exactly what needed to be done to achieve our goals. It was just a matter of putting in the work needed to get there.
On October 5, 2013, I traveled to Agua Prieta, Sonora, Mexico, where I competed in my first amateur fight since my brother’s death. I won the fight with a second round TKO. Although my brother is not here physically, I still have him here with me, spiritually. I want to accomplish everything we promised we would do together. Every victory from this day forward will be dedicated to Alexis. Take care of your loved ones, and each other, because we aren’t promised tomorrow.

Team ‘Destroyer’ Melendez Congratulate Their Fighter for Impressive Stoppage of Jamaal Davis

Free Agent Boxing and Troya Boxing Management wish to congratulate super-welterweight powerhouse Jorge “Destroyer” Melendez for his impressive TKO 2 victory over capable Philadelphia veteran Jamaal Davis last Saturday, October 5, on the TopRank.tv broadcast “Cotto vs. Rodriguez” undercard at the Amway Center in Orlando, Florida.

Despite a spirited effort by the determined Davis, the pulverizing power of Melendez (27-3,-1 26 KOs) proved to be too much, as he was knocked down twice in round one and finally stopped at 2:29 of round two, in no shape to continue. A true test for any 154-lb fighter, Davis had previously gone the distance with the likes of world champion Peter Quillin, ex-world champ Yuri Foreman and top contenders Patrick Majewski, Joel Julio and Ossie Duran.

“Jorge is too strong,” said manager, Edwin Diaz. “It is only a matter of time before he catches up to anyone we put in front of him. Jamaal Davis lasted the distance against great contenders and world champions like Peter Quillin and Yuri Foreman, but the power of ‘The Destroyer’ was too much for him to handle.”

With continued impressive victories such as this one, Melendez remains on track to become a top contender at 154 pounds.

Advisor José A. Acevedo added, “Jorge Melendez is grabbing more attention in the light middleweight division, as he keeps knocking his opponents out, and is showing improvement in his boxing skills as well. He is fearless and willing to fight anyone, any time. That’s why he’ll be champion someday soon. He is exactly what this division needs: a power puncher willing to fight anyone.”

INVICTA FIGHTING CHAMPIONSHIPS RETURNS DECEMBER 7!

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (Oct. 11, 2013) – Women’s world championship Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) promotion Invicta Fighting Championships will return to Ameristar Casino Hotel Kansas City with a stacked, nine-bout event featuring three world title fights, including a main event showdown between reigning flyweight champion Barb Honchak (8-2) of Bettendorf, Iowa and three-time “Fight of the Night” winner Leslie “The Peacemaker” Smith (6-3-1) of Pleasanton, Calif.

Tickets priced from $35, for the highly-anticipated return of Invicta FC women’s MMA action go on sale at 10 a.m. CT on Friday, Oct. 18, at TicketFly.com.

“We are excited about returning to the big stage in full force with another loaded card featuring a fantastic mix of world championship bouts and other world-class MMA action that will see a collection of the best women fighters on the planet face off against each other,” said Invicta FC President Shannon Knapp.

In the co-main event, Carla “Cookie Monster” Esparza (9-2) of Redondo Beach, Calif. will put her strawweight (115 pounds) championship on the line against surging, undefeated superstar Claudia Gadelha (11-0) of Mossoro, Rio Grande Do Norte Brazil.

In the first-ever Invicta FC bantamweight (135 pounds) world championship bout, hard-hitting KO artist Lauren Murphy (7-0) of Anchorage, Alaska will battle fellow unbeaten star Miriam Nakamoto (2-0, 1 NC) of Dublin, Calif.

The 34-year-old Honchak, a protégé of former world champion Pat Miletich, dominated Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt Vanessa Porto to become the first Invicta FC 125 pound champion in history on July 13. The victory was Honchak’s seventh straight.

Smith, a 31-year-old striking aficionado, has become a memorable face by engaging in all-out slugfests with her opponents on the five Invicta FC cards that she has appeared on. On July 13, Smith, in her firsts start at flyweight after a healthy run at bantamweight, outgunned Jennifer Maia to earn a unanimous decision after three rounds of action.

The 26-year-old Esparza, a student of famed trainer Colin Oyama, will step in the cage for the first time since sustaining a knee injury in training earlier this year. In her last effort at Invicta FC 4 on January 5, she notched her fourth consecutive win, a unanimous decision over “Rowdy” Bec Hyatt.

Gadelha has been unstoppable with her submission game and, lately, her striking, since turning pro in 2008. The 24-year-old will make her second start under the Invicta FC banner after scoring a third round (3:58) TKO on JEWELS champion Ayaka Hamasaki with a barrage of punches on July 13.

Murphy has been perfect, thus far, in the Invicta FC cage, earning back-to-back unanimous decision victories over Kaitlin Young and Sarah “The Monster” D’Alelio on April 5 and July 13, respectively. Prior to her Invicta FC debut, the 30-year-old had scored TKO finishes on all five her career opponents.

The 37-year-old Nakamoto, a seasoned Muay Thai champion extended her unblemished record at Invicta FC 6, scoring a thunderous first round (2:08) TKO on Duda Yankovich with a knee strike and series of punches. The finish earned Nakamoto “KO of the Night” honors.

In other main card action, Felice “Lil’ Bulldog” Herrig (9-4) of Buffalo Grove, Illin. will make her highly-anticipated Invicta FC debut and put a four-fight win streak on the line in a strawweight matchup opposite unbeaten, fast-rising star Tecia “The Tiny Tornado” Torres (3-0) of Fort Lauderdale, Fla.

Another matchup of unbeaten rising stars will pit Joanne Calderwood (7-0) of Glasgow, Scotland against Katja “Killer Bunny” Kankaanpaa (8-0-1) of Seinajoki, Southern Ostrobothnia Finland at strawweight.

Heavy-handed powerhouse Julia “The Jewel” Budd (5-2) of Port Moody, British Columbia Canada will put a three-fight win streak on the line against submission ace Charmaine “Not So Sweet” Tweet (4-3) Regina, Saskatchewan Canada in a featherweight (145 pounds) scrap.

Porto (15-6) of Sao Paulo, Brazil will look to rebound from a defeat the hands of Honchak at the last Invicta FC event in July when she collides with fellow superstar Zoila Frausto Gurgel (12-3) of Cincinnati, Ohio at flyweight. Porto has claimed 10 of her 15 professional career victories by way of submission while Gurgel has defeated a host of top rivals, including Jessica Aguilar and Megumi Fujii during her outstanding four plus year professional career.

Kelly Kobold (18-3) of Minneapolis, Minn. will make her long-awaited Invicta FC debut in a bantamweight tilt with fellow ferocious finisher Tonya “Triple Threat” Evinger (11-6) of Odessa, Mo.

In another meeting between two Invicta FC newcomers, hard-punching Munah “The Perfect Storm” Holland (5-2) of Elmwood Park, N.J. will face streaking Nina “The Strina” Ansaroff (5-4) of Fort Lauderdale at flyweight.

IBF World Champion Hernandez faces mandatory Alekseev on November 23

The wait is over. After having won the rights to stage Yoan Pablo Hernandez’ (27-1, 13 KOs) mandatory against Alexander Alekseev (24-2-1, 20 KOs), Team Sauerland is proud to announce that the IBF Cruiserweight World Championship is going to take place on November 23 at the brose Arena in Bamberg, Germany.

“This is going to be an instant classic,” promises Ulli Wegner, head coach of Hernandez. “It will be a clash between two world-class technicians.”

Hernandez is glad to defend the title he won versus American Steve Cunningham back in 2011 for a third time. “Finally I have my next title defense scheduled. I already wanted to fight this February but while being in training camp for this bout, I broke my left hand in sparring,” said the 28-year-old champion, who is also recognized as the Cruiserweight World Champion by “The Ring Magazine”. “After such a long break I see some hard work coming up against Alekseev. But as a world champion you have to fight what is set in front of you. He earned his mandatory spot so I am happy to face him on November 23.”

Alekseev himself is highly motivated to dethrone the defending IBF-titlist. “This will be the most important fight of my career to date,” assures the 32-year-old challenger. “Everything works the way it should be in training and I promise that I will take this chance and beat Hernandez!”

Tickets for the big fight night on November 23 in Bamberg, Germany can be purchased at www.eventim.de and www.boxen.com.

PETER “KID CHOCOLATE” QUILLIN MEDIA WORKOUT QUOTES

Peter Quillin_2
Los Angeles (Oct. 10) – WBO Middleweight World Champion Peter “Kid Chocolate” Quillin put on a clinic today for media members at his gym in Santa Monica, Calif. as he prepares for his title bout against top contender “King” Gabriel Rosado taking place Saturday, Oct. 26 at Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City live on SHOWTIME CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING. Quillin vs. Rosado will precede the title fight between future IBF Light Heavyweight World Champion Bernard Hopkins and top-rated contender Karo Murat.

The undefeated rising star worked out for well over an hour on the speed bag and heavy bag as well as several 12-minute rounds hitting the mitts with trainer Eric Brown.

Below please find quotes from today’s workout.

Peter Quillin, WBO Middleweight World Champion

“[Gabriel] Rosado presents his own challenges. He’s coming to win my world title. I have something that he wants, so I have to respect him for that. We have to put our friendship aside.

“Going into the fight, I have to take myself to a whole another level as far as my work ethic. I’m doing a lot more than I ever have. I’ve had tremendous training [camp]. Now I have to prove what my hard work does, like I always have, by just going in there and trying my best.

“I don’t feel that I’m underrated. I know I have my share of supporters. But I also know that I’m still looking for that clear, career-defining performance against the kinds of guys I can get the credit for fighting.

“So, until then, until I’m in with those kinds of guys, I can’t really say I’ve accomplished anything that would make me feel like I’m the guy that gets all the credit.

“Yeah, I beat Winky Wright, and, yeah, I beat some guys with good records, but beating another world champion is something I really want to do. I feel that once that superstar fight comes along and is on the line, then that’s when the credit will come my way.

“I would love to fight any of the top guys.

“I didn’t come in here picking and choosing who I want to fight. I have a good team behind me. They make sure when it comes to me proving myself with, that I do my part and they do their part by making the best fights out there for me.

“When there is something unexplainable, like what I am doing, people are going to talk about it.

“I have had 11 knockdowns in my last three fights. I only had 15 amateur fights. People see or hear about those knockdowns and they have a lot to say about it. ‘If you hit so hard and have so much power, why don’t they just stay down?’ But that is not up to them to tell us why they got back up from a punch and fought on. It is up to the guy that I am fighting. The more times you get up, the more times I am going to try to knock you down.

“This will be my fourth fight on SHOWTIME. I really appreciate having them behind me. Exposure-wise, it has obviously been a big boost for me. When I walk the streets in New York City I get recognized.

“SHOWTIME is the network where all of the great fights are being made. The biggest fighter in the world, Floyd Mayweather fights on SHOWTIME. To be connected to someone that is from my hometown of Grand Rapids just like me, is fantastic.

“The most important thing for me is to go out there and inspire people to do things that they never imagined. Whether it is a boxer, a writer or an architect. I didn’t have a lot of role models growing up, but it’s what’s in yourself that counts. And that is what I am trying to get across.”

Eric Brown, Quillin’s Trainer

“Peter has really grown up a lot since winning the title, having the title and defending it successfully. It has really boosted his confidence. He’s a much more composed fighter. He’s true to himself.

“Since becoming champion he’s really begun to believe in himself more than ever.

“He’s always had the confidence that he could win, but winning the title has confirmed it. It has made the job harder for him but it has also made him work harder.

“He’s matured into a real professional. I have had him for about three years and he has always been a great young man to work with. He pretty much does everything I ask. The more I ask the more he gives. There is no limit to how far he can go. It’s all on him. I would love to see him get the opportunity to unify the division and then up to 168 pounds and unify the division there too.”
