GOLDEN BOY LIVE! HITS SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS TO CELEBRATE LABOR DAY MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 2

Luis Collazo
SAN ANTONIO, Texas, August 13 – Boxing’s hit new series, Golden Boy Live!, heads to the Cowboys Dancehall in San Antonio, Texas on Monday, September 2 to celebrate Labor Day weekend with an exciting night of fistic action featuring a 10-round welterweight bout between former World Champion Luis Collazo and surging 22-year-old prospect Alan Sanchez. The fight will air live on FOX Sports 1, America’s new sports network and FOX Deportes.

In addition, one of San Antonio’s finest, Raul “The Cobra” Martinez, faces off with the always tough Daniel “Cuate” Quevedo in an eight-round super bantamweight battle.

Collazo vs. Sanchez, 10-round welterweight bout, is presented by Golden Boy Promotions and Leija*Battah Promotions and sponsored by Corona and O’Reilly Auto Parts. Doors open at 6:00 p.m. CT and the first fight starts at 7:00 p.m. CT. The FOX Sports 1 and FOX Deportes broadcast airs live at 9:00 p.m. ET/8:00 p.m. CT/6:00 p.m. PT.

Tickets, priced at $100, $65 and $20, plus applicable taxes, fees and service charges, are on sale now and available for purchase by phone by calling Leigh*Battah Promotions at (210) 979-3302.

After returning to the ring in 2012 following a year long layoff, New York native Luis Collazo (33-5, 17 KO’s) has looked in prime form in recent wins over Steven Upsher Chambers and Miguel Callist. Now hoping to get back into the race to regain the welterweight crown he wore from 2005-2006, the 32-year-old southpaw must first get past a hungry Sanchez in the FOX Sports 1 main event on Sept 2.

Rapidly becoming a must-see fighter on the California fight scene, 22-year-old Alan Sanchez (12-2-1, 6 KO’s) will fight in Texas for the first time, riding a seven-fight winning streak that includes a first-round technical knockout win over of Artemio Reyes, avenging a loss from their first encounter in 2010, and scoring recent knockouts over Manuel Leyva and Miguel Angel Munguia. Now he steps up to the big time against Collazo, but the Fairfield, Calif. native is ready for the spotlight.

Seen by most boxing observers as one of the best boxers to not win a title in the current era, San Antonio’s Raul Martinez (29-3, 17 KO’s) has always given a supreme effort in the ring as he battles the best opposition possible, including Nonito Donaire, who handed Martinez his first professional loss in their April 2009 title fight. Now looking to get back to the top and fulfill his promise at 31 years old, Martinez plans on giving his hometown fans a show to remember this September.

A native of Sinaloa, Mexico who now fights out of Los Angeles, 29-year-old Daniel Quevedo (13-13-3, 8 KO’s) has a deceptive record, because when the bell rings, he is as tough as they come. A rugged competitor who has been stopped only once in his eight-year career, Quevedo’s battles with the likes of former World Champions Leo Santa Cruz and Eric Morel have prepared him for anything Martinez has for him on fight night.

KOVALEV FACES CLEVERLY FOR LIGHT HEAVYWEIGHT TITLE SATURDAY

sergey-kovalev
CARDIFF, WALES – Russian light heavyweight knockout artist, Sergey “Krusher” Kovalev, 21-0-1, 19 KOs, takes on undefeated WBO champion Nathan Cleverly, 26-0, 12 KOs, for the world light heavyweight title at the Motorpoint Arena in Cardiff Wales, Saturday night. The fight will be shown on HBO in a broadcast scheduled to begin at 9:45 PM (Eastern Time).

Kovalev will not only have to overcome the unbeaten champion’s boxing style, he will have to do it in the hostile environment of Cleverly’s back yard. However the hard-punching challenger has been on quite a roll of late, five knockouts in his last five starts, and is completely confident that his abilities can carry him to the championship against Cleverly, regardless of the fight’s venue.

“It doesn’t concern me at all,” Kovalev said of fighting in Wales. “This is the fight I’ve waited for and I am confident that I will do my best.”

A win by the exciting puncher would not only place a championship belt around his waist, it would also set him up for numerous lucrative bouts in the future against the cream of the light heavyweight crop. Championship matches against the likes of belt holders Bernard Hopkins and Adonis Stevenson would be widely embraced by fans.

However, Kovalev must first defeat a champion who has yet to lose a fight. Not an easy task for any fighter.

“He’s not a bad fighter,” said John David Jackson, Kovalev’s trainer. “I’ll give Nathan this, he moves well. He’s slippery. He doesn’t take three or four rounds to get started. But once he gets hit the first time, all that’s going to leave. He’s going to become one of two things. He’s either going to go into defensive mode, or he’s going to become too brave for his own good. Either way, it’s not a problem for Sergey.”

This is the first world title shot for Kovalev, who became the #1 contender for the IBF title in his last fight, a third round TKO of Cornelius White in June. However, instead of waiting for IBF champ Bernard Hopkins’ schedule to clear, Kovalev opted instead to face the champion from Wales.

Tim Puller Makes Return On Fight Club Show at Little Creek Casino Show in Washington On September 21st

Shelton, WA. – On Saturday, September 21, the wait is over, as “The Hebrew Hammer,” former IBC heavyweight champion Tim Puller, makes his return to the ring after nearly 13 years to face Yohan Banks on the latest hard-hitting edition of Roy Englebrecht Promotions’ Fight Club series at Little-Creek Casino Resort in Shelton, Washington.

The six round heavyweight bout will mark the 44-year-old Puller’s first fight since his October 2000 match with Marvin Hunt.

Also on tap for what is shaping up to be the best pro boxing show to hit the Pacific Northwest in years is a Washington State Middleweight Championship bout between undefeated Tacoma prospect Mike Gavronski (12-0-1, 9 KOs) and Seattle’s Eddie Hunter (8-8-2, 2 KOs), and a clash of heavyweight unbeatens featuring Federal Way’s “Vicious” Vince Thompson (13-0, 2 KOs) against Los Angeles’ Charles Martin (9-0-1, 8 KOs).

Tickets to the 7:00pm, Saturday, September 21st Fight Club show in the Skookum Events Center at Little Creek Casino Resort in Shelton, Washington can be purchased at www.little-creek.com.

One of the most popular big men of his era, the 6-foot-6 “Hebrew Hammer,” Tim Puller (20-6, 11 KOs), who was born in Israel, took on all comers over the course of his career, including Chris Byrd, Tim Witherspoon, and Lou Savarese, thrilling fight fans from coast to coast. On September 21, he will return to the state of his greatest victory – his 1999 win over longtime contender James “Quick” Tillis – to begin the comeback of a lifetime.

38-year-old Californian Yohan Banks (6-8-3, 4 KOs) may not have the best looking record, but he has had plenty of success taking down hot prospects over the years, with his knockouts of former University of Miami football star Quadtrine Hill and 16-1-1 Skyler Anderson being the most notable. Now he will set his sights on spoiling the return of Tim Puller.

In other undercard action…

Top cruiserweight prospect Marquise Weston, who, after a big amateur career won his pro debut in May at Little-Creek, will look to go to 2-0 against Richard Ballard a former Washington native now training in Los Angeles who will be making is pro debut. Also looking to stay perfect is Seattle’s Eric Dahlberg, who has won his two pro fights in the Skookum Event Center. He faces Long Beach’s Elliott Lemon (1-1).

Anthony Hardy’s second fight is set!

Today it has been formally announced that adroit Southpaw Anthony Hardy (1-0) will be fighting in his second professional boxing match at the sumptuous Rainton Meadows Arena in Houghton Le Spring, Northern England.

The opponent is not yet known, and the splendid local fight card is still in construction. After defeating hardnosed veteran Matt Seawright (5-79-5) in four rounds at Sunderland FC on July 7th; Hardy looks to adapt more and more to the tools required atop the professional boxing latter. Hardy struggled past a close and hard fought third round which he officially lost to pummel the iron-chinned Seawright in the final round – coming within inches of stopping the man before the final bell.

The heart of Hardy’s training camp is expected to open up later this month. Hardy has been keeping to a strict diet as well as a daily exercise regimen around a full time “9-5” job as he assiduously prepares to continue his early pro-career run at age 21. Still, things will only become more laborious as fight night continues to approach in the distance.
Hardy mainly looks to sought after more and more victories – he’s a fighter who wants to be tested prior to getting in a regional title fight in the near future. He hopes to fulfill and exceed his goals at British, European, and maybe even world title greatness. Although each fight is very important in shaping out his immediate and distant future – a loss now would undoubtedly mark as a major setback, and a revolting blemish he would dread to have occur. That’s why his team is hoping they can put in vigorous training camp to very well top the first.

Tickets are now available! Reach out to Anthony Hardy, Phil Jefferies, or any of the event’s other organizers or participants for more information and to purchase a selection of luxurious seats to the event!

MIKE ALVARADO AND RUSLAN PROVODNIKOV BATTLE FOR WBO JUNIOR WELTERWEIGHT TITLE Saturday, October 19 at 1STBANK Center Live on HBO World Championship Boxing®

Ruslan Provodnikov
DENVER (August 13, 2013) — Denver’s very own homegrown world champion “Mile High” MIKE ALVARADO will make the first defense of his World Boxing Organization (WBO) junior welterweight title a “home game,” when he battles No. 1 contender RUSLAN PROVODNIKOV of Russia, Saturday, October 19, at 1STBANK Center in nearby Broomfield, Colo. This marks the area’s first world championship fight featuring a local fighter since September 15, 2000 when former World Boxing Council (WBC) lightweight champion Stevie Johnston unsuccessfully challenged defending WBC lightweight champion Jose Luis Castillo, via majority draw, at Pepsi Center. Alvarado vs. Provodnikov will be televised live on HBO World Championship Boxing, beginning at 9:45 p.m. ET/PT. This will be the first time HBO has televised a live fight from Colorado.

Alvarado and Provodnikov enter this world title tilt fresh from Fight of the Year performances that took place in March, just two weeks apart from each other, and were televised on HBO®. They boast a combined record of 56-3 (38 KOs) — a winning percentage of 95% and a victory by knockout ratio of 68%.

Promoted by Top Rank® and Banner Promotions, in association with Tecate, tickets to the Alvarado vs. Provodnikov world title fight event will go on sale This Friday! August 16 at 10:00 a.m. MT. Priced at $200, $100, $50 and $25, plus applicable fees and taxes, tickets can be purchased online at TicketHorse.com, order by phone at 866-461-6556 and at Tickethorse kiosks located at all Colorado Dick’s Sporting Goods Stores (for credit card purchases only)

“Denver just got its Super Bowl in boxing. I’m so excited,” said Alvarado. “I am going to adjust my training technique and battle plan because there are different challenges from Ruslan Provodnikov compared to fighting Brandon Rios.”

“I’m glad that Alvarado finally agreed to this fight,” said Provodnikov. “This will be an unforgettable fight for the fans. I will not disappoint my team and my fans.”

“Boxing fans have been craving for this match up,” said Todd duBoef, president of Top Rank. The fighters’ styles make for boxing’s in-ring perfect storm.”

“I’m very excited about the fight and glad that Bob Arum and Todd duBoef were able to close the deal with Alvarado,” said Art Pelullo, president of Banner Promotions and Provodnikov’s promoter. “I think it’s a great fight for boxing. It’s what we need. Ruslan was very close to beating Tim Bradley. We think he can win the fight. We know it’s going to be an exciting fight no matter what happens.”

“Mike Alvarado vs. Ruslan Provodnikov is a fight fan’s fight that will deliver non-stop action from the moment the first bell rings,” said Peter Nelson, director of programming, HBO Sports. “The fight crowd in Denver and those tuning in to HBO on October 19 are in for a memorable night of boxing. We are grateful to both fight camps for accepting the bout.”

Alvarado (34-1, 23 KOs) of Denver, had won 10 of his last 14 bouts by stoppage en route to his rematch victory over Brandon “Bam Bam” Rios, on March 30, which not only avenged Alvarado’s loss to Rios in last year’s Fight of the Year, but also made Alvarado a world champion. Alvarado had lost to Rios on October 13, via a seventh-round technical knockout in one of the most action-packed fights of the millennium. Going into round seven, two of the three judges’ scorecards had it 57-57. In the sequel, which was as action-packed as the first fight, Alvarado made subtle adjustments to eke out a narrow but unanimous decision. Notable Alvarado knockout victims have included Breidis Prescott, Ray Narh, Emmanuel Clottey and Cesar Bazan. In 2012 Alvarado fought in two Fights of the Year-nominated fights. On April 14, 2012, Alvarado went toe-to-toe for 10 brutal and exciting rounds winning a unanimous decision over Mauricio Herrera (18-1, 7 KOs). Herrera entered that fight world-rated No. 7 and riding a two-year, five-bout winning streak, highlighted by victories over Ruslan Provodnikov (17-0) and Mike Dallas, Jr. (17-1-1). That was followed by his first fight with Rios in October.

Provodnikov (22-2, 15 KOs), born and raised in Berezovo, Khanty-Mansi, Russia in Siberia, is trained by Hall of Famer World-Famous Freddie Roach. He enters this fight coming off a hotly-disputed unanimous decision loss to undefeated WBO welterweight champion Timothy Bradley, Jr. In their March 16 rumble, Provodnikov, who moved up in weight for his title shot, hurt Bradley numerous times during their slugfest, nearly knocking out the defending champion in the first and second rounds and scoring a knockdown in the final round. Two of the three scorecards had Bradley winning by only one point. Provodnikov, 29. has built up a steady fan base due to his exciting fights which have been televised nationally. Known for his aggressive style and excellent two-fisted punching power, Provodnikov is already more than prepared for his second consecutive world title challenge — this time at his natural junior welterweight level — inasmuch as he has been Manny Pacquiao’s main sparring partner for the past 12 months. His professional resume boasts victories over former world champions Javier Jauregui and DeMarcus Corley, and he enters this fight having won five of his last six bouts, with four of those victories coming by way of knockout, including a sixth-round stoppage of David Torres and a second-round knockout of Jose Reynoso. Torres and Reynoso had a combined record of 37-5-3 when they fought Provodnikov.

Moore-Medina headlines ‘Changing The Game’ in Boston

BOSTON (August 13, 2013) — Undefeated Cleveland light middleweight Michael Moore (12-0 (6 KOs) will headline the “Changing The Game” professional boxing card, presented by Big Six Entertainment in association with Danny Kelly Promotions, on Saturday, September 7 (special 5 p.m. ET start) at The Royale Nightclub Boston (formerly The Roxy), located in the downtown theater district.

“We are excited about coming right back to The Royale Boston,” Big Six Entertainment president Artie DePinho said. “The combination of New England fight fans and the venue created an electric atmosphere at our last event. We are putting together another night of can’t-miss entertainment and I encourage everybody to get tickets early.”

The fast-rising Moore, who fights out of the same city that has produced contemporary world-title contenders such as Willie Nelson and Miguel Gonzales, will face face the toughest test of his young professional career, Jose “Stinger” Medina (18-13-1, 7 KOs), in an eight-round bout. Media is considered a gatekeeper whose record is deceiving because so many of his fights have been in his opponent’s backyard, many on short notice.

Medina, fighting out nearby Quincy (MA), is coming of a win by six-round decision over Allen Conyers (12-8) in July. The 30-year-old Mexico-born fighter has upset 17-1 Issac Rodrigues (KO4) and he fought world champion Joachim Alcine to an eight-round draw in 2011, in which most observers felt Medina deserved the decision. Medina, who has only been stopped twice in 32 fights, has been the distance against world-class opponents such Fernando Guerrero, Bronco McKart and Matthew Hatton, as well as prospects Lamar Russ and Nick Brinson.

Popular Irish welterweight Michael McLaughlin (5-1-1, 3 KOs), the Donegal boxer now living in Boston, is slated to be in the six-round co-feature. 2012 National PAL Championship gold-medalist, Lynn welterweight Rashidi “Prince” Ellis (1-0), returns to the scene of his successful professional debut on July 27 to fight in a four-rounder.

Also slated to fight on the undercard in separate four-round matches, against TBAs, include the following Massachusetts fighters: Boston heavyweight Donnie Palmer (0-1-1), Lawrence light welterweight Carlos Canderlario (3-0, 1 KO), Stoneham welterweight Greg Vendetti (3-0-1, 2 KOs), Lynn light heavyweight Fadoul Louis (2-1-1, 1 KO) and Bridgewater heavyweight Julian Pollard (2-0, 2 KOs).

Opponents in all of the scheduled fights, excluding the main event, will be announced after Massachusetts State Athletic Commission approvals.

All fighters are subject to change.

Tickets, reasonably priced at $40.00, $50.00 and $75.00, are available to purchase by calling 1.617.312.5059.

Doors open at 4:00 p.m. ET with the first bout scheduled for 5:00 p.m. ET.

Lopez to Rematch with Darvishian: Darwish Brothers EFC WARRIOR Show Now Topped by Female Main Event

History will be in the making in the Grand Ballroom at Trump Taj Mahal Casino Hotel in Atlantic City, on Saturday, August 24, when New Jersey’s premier MMA promoters, The Darwish Brothers, will present EFC WARRIOR a night of full-contact cage fighting topped by, for the first time in EFC history, a female main event.

In a rematch to their sensational war last February, Jen Lopez (4-1) from AMA Fight Club in Whippany, New Jersey, will once again lock up with arch-rival Roya Darvishian (5-2) of Lloyd Irvin MMA in Camp Springs, Maryland. Their three-round female war will be the featured bout at EFC WARRIOR and will also be for the EFC Women’s Bantamweight Championship.

Tickets for EFC WARRIOR are priced at: $125, $100, $67 and $46 and are on sale now by calling Ticketmaster at 1-800-736-1420 or online at www.ticketmaster.com, at the EFC website: www.efcmma.com, or at the Trump Taj Mahal box office on fight night.

Darvishian and Lopez met on February 16 at Xtreme Caged Combat: Mayhem and, after three of the most brutal rounds in female MMA this year, Darvishian was able to secure a razor-thin split decision victory. This time, with a title on the line, they will fight three more rounds and Lopez is on a mission for revenge.

With EFC Light Heavyweight Champion Christopher Vallaro forced to withdraw from the event with a broken nose, event co-promoter Hani Darwish says he didn’t hesitate to elevate the two ladies into the main event.

“I’m extremely proud to be hosting a female main event at one of our shows,” said event co-promoter Hani Darwish. “These ladies truly deserve to be honored this way after the show they put on in their first match-up. Both of them are extremely talented athletes and they’re both very eager to get in the cage again.”

EFC WARRIOR will host two more title fights, as Gabriel Ruiz (3-2) of the EFC Fight Club in Woodland Park, NJ and Jovany Alvarez (4-2) from Modern Martial Arts in Englishtown, NJ, will fight for the EFC Featherweight Championship; and the always exciting Barat Jan (3-0) of Eagle Martial Arts in Boonton, NJ, will take on Victor Romero (3-3) of Modern Martial Arts in Englishtown, NJ, for the EFC Middleweight Championship.

For more information on the EFC and its fighters, visit the EFC website: www.efcmma.com.

Doors open at 7 pm on fight night and the first bout is at 8 pm. All bouts subject to change.

Stevenson to defend against Cloud on September 28th

cloud_tavoris
According to Dan Rafael of espn.com, WBC Light Heavyweight champion Adonis Stevenson will defend against former IBF champion Tavoris Cloud on September 28th in Montreal in a bout that will be televised by HBO.

“This fight is totally different than the fight with Dawson,” said Stevenson’s promoter Yvon Michel. “Cloud is aggressive, likes to exchange, likes to fight. He was outsmarted when he fought Bernard Hopkins [in a March loss].”

“We were waiting for paperwork. It took a little while to get the signed paperwork but we had an agreement, and Cloud and Stevenson are already in training,” Michel said. “Tavoris Cloud was the fighter that HBO wanted us to make a deal with and I am happy we got that done with Don King. A lot of people said it would be difficult to do with Don King, but that was not the case. Gary Shaw (Dawson’s promoter who had an option on Stevenson) is also involved with us in this fight and he also helped to get this done.”

For that fight, Cloud had fired trainer Al Bonanni and strength coach Alonzo Johnson and hired Abel Sanchez, who brought him to his camp in Big Bear Lake, Calif. After the loss, Cloud fired Sanchez and rehired Bonanni and Johnson, and is now training with them again in Ocala, Fla.

“He’s back with Al Bonanni and I know he’ll come out swinging and be aggressive, so for Adonis this fight will be to prove that what he did to Dawson was no fluke and that he is the real deal in the light heavyweight division,” Michel said. “We have to show that not only he can punch but that he can box too because he will have to do both in the fight. We’re very enthusiastic about the fight.”

“I wish I had a chance for him to fight Hopkins again,” Bonanni said. “I really felt he wasn’t right for the Hopkins fight. If Alonzo and I were there I think he would have been much more aggressive. Bu we know this here fight with Stevenson is not an easy fight. This is a southpaw, he’s taller, he has reach advantage, he is very strong and even though he is 35, he hasn’t had a lot of wear and tear.

“But Tavoris is in great physical shape. Alonzo been here for three weeks in Ocala working with him. [Monday] was my first day in the gym and Alonzo already has him in great shape. We can beat Stevenson. I’ll do my job and we’ll work on fighting a southpaw and we’ll start sparring next week. This guy [Stevenson] has tremendous power but I’ve seen a lot of things he does that are very rudimentary. He doesn’t have a lot of experience. I think he could get caught and that we have a good chance to pull the upset. They’re taking Cloud because they think he’s done, shot, finito and that’s good. We’re going there to surprise them and to win. We’re not just going there as an opponent or for a big payday.

“I’m happy to be back,” he said. “He asked me to come back. I don’t have any animosity toward him, although I lost a big payday.”

Andre Berto to undergo Should Surgery

Andre_Berto
Former welterweight world champion Andre Berto will have Shoulder surgery on Wednesday according to Dan Rafael of espn.com

“Surgery is obviously never something that anyone wants to deal with, but adversity is nothing new to me,” Berto said in a statement on Monday. “I know that Dr. [Neal] ElAttrache is one of the best in the business, so I am in good hands. I’m going to tackle this latest obstacle head on and I plan to be back in the ring full force in 2014.

“I really appreciate all the support that my fans have given me over the last few weeks and promise that you are going to see much more from me in the future.”

“I threw a punch in the second round, and when Soto Karass blocked it, my right upper arm connected with his and it felt like fire shot through my arm,” Berto said. “I had no power at all in that right arm and couldn’t hold it up to defend myself. I kept trying to use it, but midway through the fight, I realized I couldn’t and just tried to work my left hand and throw jabs.

“I threw it [instinctively] in the heat of the battle later in the fight and yelled from the pain shooting through my arm. I could see that Soto Karass and the referee heard me, and the referee and doctor kept coming to the corner between rounds to check on the injury, but there was no way I was going to quit.”

TYSON FURY HITS RIPE OLD AGE OF 25!!!

London (12 August) Just six weeks and five days away from his all British super fight with former WBA heavyweight champion David Haye on September 28, Tyson Fury is celebrating his 25th birthday.

The 6’9’’ heavyweight sensation is in training camp in Belgium preparing to take on Haye at the Phones 4 U Arena Manchester live on Sky Sports HD Box Office and instead of cake, can look forward to hard training and a fixed diet!

For Tyson, the former English, British, Commonwealth and Irish heavyweight champion, many could be forgiven for assuming he is older considering everything he’s already achieved.

Boasting a perfect record of 21 wins from 21 fights, with 15 knockouts, in just five years as a professional, it all started with a first round knockout of Bela Gyongyosi in 2008.

Tyson claimed the British heavyweight belt with a ninth round knockout of John McDermott in just 2010, in a rematch from their 2009 contest where Tyson won the English title with a points decision.

In 2011 he fought Dereck Chisora for the British and Commonwealth titles – utilising his reach, Tyson powered his way to a unanimous points win over 12 rounds, picking up the championships while inflicting the first defeat of Chisora’s promising career.

That was quickly followed by knockout victories over Nicolai Firtha and Neven Pajkic before relinquishing his belts to face Martin Rogan for the vacant Irish heavyweight championship.

Since then, Fury claimed the WBO Inter-Continental title with a crushing fifth round knockout of Vinny Maddalone.

Ranked in the top 10 fighters within all the world governing bodies, Tyson stepped up to convincingly outpoint Kevin Johnson in Belfast, before moving on to Steve “USS” Cunningham on his US debut.

Fighting at the Mecca of boxing at The Theater at Madison Square Garden, New York, a venue every fighter aspires to fight in but few accomplish, Tyson met the former two-time world cruiserweight champion Cunningham.

Aged just 24 at the time, Tyson faced a second-round knockdown to come back and knock Cunningham out in the seventh, proving he not only has the physical attributes to dominate the sport, but also the heart and drive to come back and win.

Experienced and mature beyond his years, one thing is for certain, come September 28th all that heart and will to win will be in the ring with David Haye, but for now it’s a birthday of training and hard work.

TRAVIS KAUFFMAN TO TAKE ON ARRON LYONS ON AUGUST 23RD AT THE VALLEY FORGE CASINO RESORT

VALLEY FORGE, PA (August 11, 2013)—On Friday night, August 23rd, WBA #13 ranked Heavyweight Travis Kauffman will take on upset minded Arron Lyons in an eight round co-feature at the Valley Forge Casino Resort.

The show which is promoted by Kings Boxing will be headlined by a ten round Pennsylvania Lightweight championship bout between undefeated champion Naim Nelson (10-0, 1 KO) of Philadelphia defending his title against Ryan Belasco (18-5-3, 3 KO’s) of Wilmingtin, Delaware in a bout scheduled for ten rounds.

Kauffman of Reading, PA has a record of 24-1 with 18 knockouts and the former amateur star won his first eighteen bouts with big wins over Malachy Farrell and William Shahan.

After suffering his only blemish which was a controversial loss to Tony Grano, Kauffman has won six in a row which includes wins over Chris Koval and his last bout when he took out Willie Perryman in one round on February 15th.

“I don’t much on Lyons except that he is durable and goes rounds and he has upset some guys like Joey Abell”, said Kauffman.

“I am not just going in there to knock people out and on August 23rd I am looking for a stellar performance”.

“I know now that I am ranked every fight is a steppingstone and I know I have to dominate Lyons.”

Kauffman knows that being world ranked, that a big fight could be near.

“Whatever is in the future, let it be”

Kauffman is ready to fight anyone at the top of the division, but circumstances have prevented him from taking that defining figjt.

“I was called to fight Tomasz Adamek but they took Dominick Guinn. Adamek is a hell of a fighter but I feel I can beat him. I was offered a fight with undefeated WBA #2 ranked Luis Ortiz but it was only four weeks’ notice for very short money. This is a business and the risk outweighed the reward. I am taking this one day at a time, I have had injuries problems such as three hand surgeries, and ankle and shoulder problems but now I am completely healthy and ready to look to big things in my future”

Lyons of Gulfport, Mississippi has a record of 12-12-1 with nine knockouts and has the aforementioned win over Abell plus two wins over Gabe Brown and a win over Lenroy Thomas.

Lyons has also been in the ring with Charles Ellis, Eugene Hill, Johnnie White, Damian Wills, Luis Ortiz and Kelvin Price.

SPONG EARNS DECISION VICTORY OVER ANGEL DEANDA IN THRILLING FOURTH EVENT FOR WORLD SERIES OF FIGHTING

Aug. 10, ONTARIO, Calif. – Ten-time world kickboxing champion Tyrone “King of the Ring” Spong (2-0) earned his second career mixed-martial-arts victory, outstriking an inedibly tough Angel “The Dream” DeAnda over the course of the three-round headliner of Saturday night’s “World Series of Fighting 4: Spong vs. DeAnda” event.

The NBC Sports Network televised event drew a crowd of 5,000 fans at Citizens Business Bank Arena in Ontario, Calif.

Spong was patient throughout the 15-minute contest, calmly walking forward and picking DeAnda apart with thunderous leg kicks and powerful punches. DeAnda was hobbled from the low kicks in the second frame, but he refused to quit and constantly looked for opportunities to launch his own attacks.

Spong turned up the heat in the final round, slashing at the legs and firing punches to the chin. DeAnda never backed down, returning fire until the very end, but it was Spong who was awarded the clearcut unanimous-decision win.

“I went in with no expectations, and I wanted to feel him out and see what he was made of,” Spong said. “DeAnda is a strong guy. He surprised me with how much punishment he was able to take.”

In the night’s bantamweight co-feature, top-ranked fighter Marlon Moraes improved to 3-0 as a World Series of Fighting athlete, dominating a tough Brandon Hempleman throughout an entertaining 15-minute matchup.

Moraes’ aggressive striking and technical Muay Thai cut Hempleman’s forehead in the opening round, and his powerful leg kicks left his opponent hopping on one leg in the second. But even with the blood flowing and his movement limited, Hempleman continued to press forward, waving to the crowd as he tried to turn the tide.

Moraes, who suffered a broken finger and injured foot in the opening 10 minutes, slowed his attack in the final frame, but the spectacular performance through the first two rounds was enough to earn him a unanimous-decision win, 30-27 on all three judges’ cards.

“Man, that guy was tough,” Moraes said after the win. “He just kept coming forward.”

The incredible story of lightweight Nick Newell (10-0) earned another heartwarming chapter on Saturday night, as he scored a first-round submission win over Keon Caldwell (9-2).

Newell, who bas born with a condition known as congenital amputation and has just one fully-formed arm, slipped under an early Caldwell striking attempt and took him to the floor. Caldwell quickly returned to the feet, but Newell instantly deposited him on the canvas a second time. Once he was firm in top position, Newell quickly latched in a guillotine choke and rolled off to his side and squeezed, earning the tap at the 2:07 mark of the first.

“It was a great honor to fight in front of this crowd and all the troops that came out to support me,” Newell said. “Can’t wait to do it again.”

In a featured heavyweight attraction, heavyweight Dave Huckaba (21-5) earned an impressive second-round finish of kickboxing legend and World Series of Fighting President Ray Sefo (2-2).

Sefo appeared to be getting the better of Huckaba as the action unfolded in the second round. Sharp leg kicks left Huckaba limping, and Sefo fired in several staggering punches, as well. With Huckaba fading, Sefo launched a massive high kick toward his opponent’s head, but it missed by mere inches. Huckaba alertly slipped the strike and unleashed a furious flurry of counter punches, scoring first with uppercuts and then a barrage of hooks to a covering Sefo that forced a halt to the bout with 28 seconds left in the second round.

“Right now, I am on top of the world,” Huckaba said after the win. “I can’t even describe what I am feeling. Nobody except my team thought I could win this fight. I mean, I was fighting a legend, right?

“This is such a dream come true. Can you believe this? I got my chance and made the most of it.”

The bout is expected to serve as the final appearance of Sefo’s Hall of Fame career.

Veteran lightweights Gesias “JZ” Cavalcante and Tyson Girffin combined to put on an exciting standup battle in the night’s first main-card contest.

The pair took turns trading heavy shots for the opening two rounds, with Cavalcante pressing forward and Griffin expertly countering as he circled on the outside. Both fighters were willing to engage, and the ensuing battles brought the crowd to its feet.

With the fight even heading into the final round, Cavalcante scored a key takedown and moved to his opponent’s back. With Griffin trapped underneath him, Cavalcante punched away with one hand while looking for the choke with the other. Referee Jason McCoy warned Griffin to advance his position and ultimately elected to call the fight 97 seconds into the final round in a decision that proved unpopular with the losing fighter, as well as most of the fans in attendance.

“It was a bad stoppage,” Griffin said. “He got me in a bad position, and as I was trying to work my way out the ref decided to stop the fight.”

Meanwhile, Cavalcante admitted he was disappointed with the way the bout ended but felt he was well on his way to the win.

“For me, a win is a win, and I love to win,” Cavalcante said. “But I hate to win this way. I don’t want the fans to boo. I want them to be happy. I want to win convincingly.

“I wasn’t surprised the ref stopped it. He gave three warnings, but Griffin never did anything to improve his position. I’m not saying he couldn’t continue, but he did nothing to improve his position.”

In the night’s final preliminary contest, Gerald Harris (22-5) earned a unanimous-decision win over Jorge Santiago (25-12) in a fight “Hurricane” thought he had won in the opening round.

While the two started with a moderate pace, things picked up dramatically in the closing seconds, as Harris lifted Santiago high in the air. The Brazilian defended by wrapping his arm over the cage, though Harris eventually slammed him to the floor, anyway. As the referee stepped in to deduct a point from Santiago for the foul, Harris thought the fight was over and began to celebrate the win. However, the contest carried on.

Harris outwrestled Santiago in the second round, leaving him with a with a healthy lead on the cards heading into the final frame. Santiago recognized the urgency in the situation and came out firing heavy leather, but Harris, who later said he broke his hand in the opening round, simply stalled out until the final bell, when he was awarded a unanimous decision based on his work in the first two frames.

After the win, Harris said his injured hand forced him to fight conservatively in the final five minutes.

“I knew I couldn’t punch with him,” Harris said. “I couldn’t squeeze at all.”

Still, “Hurricane” said he’s excited to get back to action as quickly as possible.

“Once this wrist heals, I’m excited to get back in the cage with whoever World Series of Fighting puts in front of me.”

Undefeated lightweight prospect Lewis Gonzales (9-0) showed incredible resiliency against gritty veteran Antonio McKee (28-6-2), earning a unanimous-decision win in a bout cut short by an accidental foul.

McKee dominated the early action, taking the fight to the floor and moving immediately into a rear-naked choke attempt that seemed destined to end the fight. But Gonzales battled through the hold and escaped to top position in the closing seconds of the round.

The second round was again a wrestling battle, but this time it was Gonzales who controlled the positioning en route to claiming the round, setting up an intriguing final frame.

McKee again looked for a takedown to open the third, but Gonzales defended the effort and again secured a dominant position. Unfortunately, he scored with an elbow to the back of McKee’s head, forcing referee Jason McCoy to step in and call a foul, which he deemed accidental and therefore did not deduct a point. McKee rolled on the floor in pain and could not continue the fight, and judges were directed to score the partial frame, which ended just 43 seconds into the five-minute period. All three judges leaned toward Gonzales, and he was awarded a unanimous decision win, 29-28 on all three cards.

In a bantamweight battle of two friends, Jared Papazian (16-10) outpointed John Robles (7-2) in a spirited three-round affair.

It was Robles who looked better in the early going, flooring Papazian with a massive right hand. But “The Jackhammer” crawled up off the deck and dominated the remainder of the action. Taunting Robles for the rest of the fight, Papazian used a vicious left hand and several thudding knees to the body to slow his opponent en route to claiming a unanimous-decision win.

Papazian, who replaced an injured Joe Murphy on just two weeks’ notice, improved to 2-1 in his past three appearances. Top prospect Robles saw a two-fight win streak snapped.

The event opened with a thrilling 150-pound catchweight contest, as 10-year veteran Victor “Joe Boxer” Valenzuela (13-6-2) survived a first-round knockdown to rally for a second-round submission win over fellow Californian Isaac “High Risk” Gutierrez (5-4).

Valenzuela was in trouble in the early going, as a Gutierrez combination sent him to the deck. But “Joe Boxer” returned to his feet and cleared his head, hanging on to the end of the round. The momentum shifted in the second, when Valenzuela was able to bring his opponent to the mat, move to the back and sink in a rear-naked choke at the 2:41 mark.

Valenzuela improves to 5-1 in his past six fights. Gutierrez falls to 1-3 in his past four appearances.

FLOYD MAYWEATHER JR. HEADS NEVADA FIGHTER HONOREES AT NEVADA BOXING HALL OF FAME INDUCTION CEREMONY

LAS VEGAS, NEV. (August 10, 2013) — Undefeated welterweight champion Floyd Mayweather Jr. heads a list of four resident boxers who will be honored with “Nevada Fighter of the Year Awards” tonight at the Inaugural Nevada Boxing Hall of Fame Dinner in Las Vegas.

Mayweather Jr., who is 44 and 0 in his long career, receives the Nevada Male Fighter of the Year honor for his virtuoso performance May 4 against Robert Guerrero at MGM Grand Garden Arena. Floyd entered the ring at the age of 36, having been out of action one day short of a year, against a young, hungry opponent in Guerrero. However, after a close battle in the first two rounds, Mayweather seized control and using his experience and guile, dominated the rest of the way.

Three other Nevada-based boxers also will receive plaques honoring their achievements over the past year. Layla McCarter is the NVBHOF Female Fighter of the Year. McCarter pulled off the difficult assignment of traveling to South Africa and defeating the previously unbeaten Noni Tenge by eight-round TKO to take the WBA Female Light Middleweight. Jesse Magdaleno was named Nevada Prospect of the Year for his rapid development into a main event fighter. Magdaleno, a two-year pro, is now 15-0. Josue Gaytan, will be honored with the Nevada Amateur Fighter of the Year Award. Gaytan, a junior at the University of Nevada in Reno, won his second consecutive National Collegiate Championship in the 185-pound division.

NVBHOF Founder and President Rich Marotta said, “We are a Nevada-centric organization and we want to recognize not only the past greats, the inductees, but those from Nevada who are making it happen in our state right now.”

Tonight’s first-ever Nevada Boxing Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony and Dinner takes place at the Monte Carlo Las Vegas Resort and Casino is a complete sellout.

Font stops Foster to earn featherweight title; de Freitas scores monumental win over O’Neil

LINCOLN, R.I. (Aug. 9th, 2013) – Only one spot separated Rob Font and Chris Foster in the ratings entering Friday night, but Font proved the distance is much greater with a dominating performance at Twin River Casino.

Ranked No. 3 in the northeast, Font (7-1, 2 KOs) captured Classic Entertainment & Sports’ vacant featherweight title in the main event of Friday’s mixed martial arts show at the Event Center, stopping the 4th-ranked Foster (7-3) with a series of unanswered blows at the 4-minute, 1-second mark of the opening round.

The Boston, Mass., native, who has now won six consecutive fights, turned the tide late in the opening round by brilliantly feigning a switch kick and catching Foster with a hard, right uppercut that sent the Meriden, Conn., featherweight drifting toward the cage. Font began hammering the stunned Foster with a series of short lefts and rights, mixing in elbows and flying knees, and eventually sent Foster to the canvas for good with a vicious right elbow to the temple. Seconds later, referee Kevin MacDonald wisely stopped the bout with Foster unable to defend himself.

Font became just the fourth champion in CES history, joining inaugural middleweight champion Todd Chattelle, reigning middleweight champion John Howard, and reigning lightweight champion Mike Campbell.

In the co-feature, a fight ranked among popular MMA website Sherdog.com’s worldwide must-watch list, Brazilian welterweight Gil de Freitas (15-5, 5 KOs) blasted former Ultimate Fighting Championships (UFC) contender Chuck O’Neil (11-6) at the 3:37 mark of the opening round to earn his fifth career knockout. O’Neil, who entered the bout ranked No. 1 in the northeast among welterweights, maintained a steady pace early in the fight by utilizing his jab, but once the two stood toe-to-toe, the powerful de Freitas took control. After a hard uppercut by O’Neil, de Freitas answered with a series of combinations, eventually sending O’Neil to the canvas and forcing referee Dan Miragliotta to stop the fight.

On the undercard, bantamweight Sophanirith Am (2-0, 1 KO) of Revere, Mass., won for the second time in as many fights, stopping newcomer Devin Pilkington (0-1) of Johnston, R.I., at the 2:24 mark of the second round following a slow start in the opening round. Middleweight Cheyenne Vazquez (1-0) of Boston won his debut by split decision, narrowly beating Framingham, Mass., native Terrell Clark, 30-27, 28-29, 29-28. In bantamweight action, Matt Doherty (2-0) of Salem, Mass., earned a technical knockout win over Johnny Campbell (5-5) of Plymouth, Mass., when the ringside physician stopped the bout at the end of the second round after Campbell dislocated his right shoulder. Campbell sustained the injury midway through the second round will trying to cushion a landing, but fought valiantly despite Doherty’s efforts to end the bout with ground-and-pound.

Lightweight Andrew Osborne (7-5, 2 KOs) of Fayetteville, N.C., spoiled Springfield, Mass., native Damien Trites’ (6-6) return to the cage, stopping Trites at 4:34 of the opening round. Fighting for the first time since 2011, Trites hit the deck late in the round following an overhand right from Osborne, who seized the opportunity and finished Trites with a series of unanswered blows. Making his Twin River debut, Delray Beach, Fla., resident and Peabody, Mass., native Charles Rosa (4-0, 2 KOs) made quick work of Rocky Hill, Conn., welterweight Silvester Murataj (0-2), earning the knockout victory 46 seconds into the opening round. Rosa has yet to advance past the first round in each of his first four bouts.

Friday’s show also featured the Twin River debut of former UFC middleweight competitor Tom Egan (6-3, 5 KOs), who stopped Framingham veteran Aldos Santos (3-2) 3:27 into the opening round. Egan has now won two consecutive bouts while Santos lost in his first fight since 2008. Bantamweight Rob Sullivan (2-1) of Baltimore, Md., used sheer strength to overwhelm East Providence, R.I., fan favorite Dinis Paiva Jr. (3-5) in a 29-28, 29-28, 29-28 unanimous decision while Brazilian heavyweight Juliano Coutinho (4-1), fighting out of Cape Cod, Mass., dominated the feisty Eric Bedard (5-4) of Providence in a 30-27, 30-27, 30-27 unanimous decision.

Avoided welterweight contender Ed Paredes Returns to ring Aug. 23 on Iron Mike Productions debut event

DEERFIELD, Fla. (August 9, 2013) – One of the most avoided welterweights in the world, Ed “The Lion” Paredes (33-3-1, 22 KOs) returns to the ring August 23 on the “Iron Mike Returns!” card, representing the debut promotional event for Iron Mike Productions, formerly Acquinity Sports, at Turning Stone Resort Casino in Verona, New York.

Acquinity Sports, under CEO Garry Jonas, partnered with Hall of Famer Mike Tyson to form Iron Mike Productions, which is presenting “Tyson Is Back!” in association with Greg Cohen Promotions.

“Tyson Is Back” features a World Championship doubleheader on ESPN Friday Night Fights, headlined by International Boxing Federation (IBF) super featherweight champion Argenis “La Tormenta” Mendez (21-2, 11 KOs) making his initial world title defense, in the 12-round main event against IBF No. 13-rated Arash Usmanee (20-1, 10 KOs).

Undefeated Claudio “The Matrix” Marrero (14-0, 11 KOs), rated No. 2 by the WBA, meets WBA No. 4 Jesus Cueller (22-1, 18 KOs) in the 12-round co-feature for the Interim World Boxing Association (WBA) featherweight championship.

After his impressive win against former world champion Vivian Harris by TKO in July 2012 in Florida, Paredes has since registered two more victories, the first against Hector Munoz by unanimous decision on November 30, along with a third-round knockout of Basilio Silva on April 13 in the Dominican Republic.

The 28-year-old Paredes is one of only two welterweights in the world who is currently ranked among the top 15 in all four major sanctioning bodies: World Boxing Council (WBC) & WBA #3, World Boxing Organization (WBO) No. 11, and IBF No. 13. Paredes will also be participating in the WBC World Cup, organized by the World Boxing Council (WBC) and its President, Mr. Mauricio Sulaiman.

The hard-hitting Paredes is scheduled to fight Mexican invader Noe “Platanito” Bolanos (24-8-1, 16 KOs) on Aug. 23rd in a 10-round bout. “We are now very close to a title shot,” Paredes said from his Miami training camp. “I need to stay near the top in the rankings to achieve that world title fight. I’m determined to look good and impressive on August 23rd. I’m excited to be fighting on this card and can’t wait to get in the ring. I’d also like to thank the WBC for allowing me to compete in the World Cup.”

‘We have an amazing schedule for the second half of 2013 in which we anticipate having the world title fight that Ed Paredes is looking for,” Iron Mike Productions COO Henry Rivalta said. “We are making our debut under the Iron Mike Productions banner, but our fighters are experienced and ready, and Ed Paredes will be better prepared to face the best welterweights in the world after his August 23rd fight.”

Also scheduled to fight in the “Tyson Is Back!” card is Cuban KO specialist Alexei “The Hurricane” Collado (16-0, 15 KOs), who will meet Mexican featherweight Hugo “Guerrero” Partida (19-4-2, 15 KOs) in a 10-round bout.

Also fighting on the undercard in six-round bouts are undefeated Bahamian light heavyweight Ryan “Big Youth” McKenzie (13-0, 11 KOs), now residing in Canastota, New York against an opponent to be determined, and unbeaten Virginian middleweight Antoine Douglas (8-0, 6 KOs) squares-off against Russell “Spiderman” Jordan (15-10, 10 KOs), of Rochester (NY).

Former Toledo-Ohio-based amateur star, Albert “Prince” Bell (1-0, 1 KO), is back in action against New York City super featherweight Angel Siguenza (0-1) in a four-round match. The 20-year-old Bell captured gold medals as an amateur at the 2011 National PAL Championships and 2012 National Golden Gloves Tournament.

All fights and fighters are subject to change.

Mendez, Marrero, Collado, Paredes and Bell were promoted by Acquinity Sports and are now fighting under the Iron Mike Productions banner.

Tickets priced at $150, $95, $55 and $45 are on sale and available to purchase at the Turning Stone box office, by calling (315) 361-7469, or visit www.Ticketmaster.com.

Doors open at the Turning Stone Resort Casino Event Center at 6:00 p.m. ET, Friday, August 23. The first undercard bout starts at 7:00 p.m. ET. The live ESPN2 telecast begins at 9:00 p.m. ET.
