Fighting in support of the three world-title fights that top the bill, including the return of superb Panamanian WBA Bantamweight Super Champion Anselmo “Chemito” Moreno (33-2-1, 12 KOs) making the eleventh defense of his 118-lb belt against Colombian southpaw William Urina (24-2, 20 KOs) in a 12-round battle; future boxing superstar Oscar Escandon (22-0, 15 KOs) vying for the interim WBA World super bantamweight championship against Panama’s former world champion Nehomar Cermeno (21-5-1, 13 KOs), and Venezuela’s WBA female featherweight Champion Ogleidis Suarez in the first defense of her title in a rematch against Colombia’s Liliana “La Tigresa” Palmera (21-10-3, 15 KOs) will be several intriguing bouts between tough South American warriors.

The main supporting bout will be an intriguing 10-round welterweight duel between two solid contenders in Azael “Turbo” Cosio (16-2-2, 13 KOs) of Santa Marta, Panama, and Devis “El Felino” Caceres (13-2, 9 KOs).

Remaining seats for “LAS VEGAS IN PANAMA II” are priced at $100, $200 and $300 USD ringside and are available at all Ticket Plus outlets as well as the Hard Rock Hotel.

Cosio was last seen winning the interim WBC Latino welterweight title with an impressive TKO 9 over respectable Colombian contender Jose David Mosquera in March. Since losing his pro debut in 2009, Caceres has only lost one fight and won his last four by way of brutal knockout.

Also scheduled for appearances on this stacked night of world-class boxing will be multiple world champion Roberto “La Araña” Vasquez (32-5-2, 22 KOs) from San Francisco, Panama, who will stay busy in a dangerous eight-round bantamweight battle against power-punching veteran Walberto Ramos (18-6-2, 12 KOs) of Monitos, Colombia.

Also scheduled are an eight-round super flyweight bout between Julio “El Kirikiki” Escudero (14-3, 10 KOs) of San Francisco, Panama and Stiven “Huesito” Monterrosa (10-2-2, 9 KOs) of Barranquilla, Colombia; a super featherweight eight-rounder between Jose “El Tigre” Forero (9-2, 7 KOs) of San Francisco, Panama and Luis Zambrano (10-3, 9 KOs) of Cordoba, Colombia; a four-round super middleweight bout pitting Israel “Arma Letal” Duffus (5-1, 4 KOs) of San Miguelito, Panama, against Manuel Banquez (7-2-2, 5 KOs) of Tolu, Colombia; and an eight-round, crosstown lightweight bout between undefeated Juan Huertas (3-0, 3 KOs) of Panama City, Panama and more experienced veteran Daniel “La Esperanza Negra” Mulgrave (4-8-2, 1 KO) of Panama City, Panama.

###

27-year-old Anselmo Moreno is a southpaw who stands 5 feet 6 inches. He is from El Martillo, Panama, but currently lives in San Miguelito. Moreno won the WBA Bantamweight title from the Ukraine’s Wladimir Sidorenko in 2008, becoming Panama’s 25th world champion, and has made 10 successful defenses. This will be Moreno’s first fight since his November 10, 2012, decision loss (while moving up in weight) against fellow star Abner Mares for the WBC Super Bantamweight Champion. This marked the second professional loss in Moreno’s career, ending a 10 year unbeaten streak.

27-year-old Urina is a southpaw from Barranquilla, Colombia. This will be his second world-title challenge. He lost a close, but unanimous decision to formidable WBO super flyweight Champion Omar Narvaez in 2011.

28-year-old Colombian Oscar Escandon had over 200 amateur bouts and proudly represented his homeland in the 2004 Summer Olympics in Beijing. As a professional, he has already won the WBC Latino Bantamweight Championship. Escandon enjoys tremendous popularity in his hometown, the Department of Tolima’s capital city of Ibague, in the central region of the Colombian Andes.

33-year-old Nehomar Cermeno was born in Barcelona, Venezuela, but now resides in Panama City. He is the former Interim WBA World Bantamweight Champion and even held it for two defenses before dropping razor-thin split decisions to Anselmo Moreno in back-to-back All Panama showdowns in 2010.

25-year-old Ogleidis Suarez is from Caracas, Venezuela. She won her title by beating then-undefeated Katy Wilson Castillo in 2011. She has already made two successful defenses of her belt, including a TKO 7 over next opponent Palmera in 2012. In addition to being a world champion boxer, the remarkable Suarez is also a professional glamor model, actress, sports commentator, television presenter and professional dancer.

31-year-old Liliana Palmera hails from Monteria, Colombia. A professional boxer since 1999, Palmera has already challenged for a world titles five separate times at various weights and always come up short.

Undercard match-ups will be announced shortly.

The event will also be televised live by Panama TV Max Channel 9 and Argentina’s TyC Sports.

Bobby Hitz calls for Amidu/Burgos rematch

Chicago, IL, Wednesday, July 31, 2013–Following Yakubu Amidu’s impressive outing on Friday night against Juan Carlos Burgos, which resulted in a controversial draw between the lightweights, Amidu’s promoter, Bobby Hitz is demanding a rematch.

“Yakubu was the aggressor all night, he matched Burgos punch for punch and dominated him in the 11th but the judges had him losing that round. After watching the replay I am con?dent that round and the ?ght should have gone to Yakubu,” said Hitz. “Yakubu took this fight on less than two weeks notice and impressed everyone with his performance. The crowd felt he was robbed. There is not one person who feels that we did not get robbed or at least deserves a rematch.”

Hitz is not alone in his belief that Yakubu deserves a rematch with Burgos. Steve Kim of Max Boxing on Friday night Steve Kim (@stevemaxboxing) of Max Boxing tweeted:

“Ok, it’s clear, Burgos and Amidu need to have a rematch. Give them a third of what Ward is asking to face a stiff on HBO… #boxing #FNF”

“Yakubu started the 11th strong, ended it strong and won 2 minutes and 40 seconds out of 3 minutes. In my opinion he won the round,” said Hitz. “Yakubu deserved a better outcome.”

Amidu joins Donatas Bondas, who fought # 1 rated Brian Vera, and Andrey Fedosov, who took on the highly rated Bryant Jennings, as members of the Hitz team who have impressed national TV audiences this year.

“Donatas’s fight was stopped recklessly by ref Charlie Fitch of New York, who did not know how to communicate with him. Meanwhile, Fedosov was in a position to beat Jennings but a questionable call by a fight doctor ended that bout prematurely,” said Hitz. “This should serve notice that when Hitz fighters are given a chance to perform on national TV there are going to give 150 percent in the ring and I owe it to them to fight for them outside of the ring.”

ABOUT HITZ BOXING: Since its debut in 1991, Hitz Boxing has been the Midwest’s leading boxing promoter. Led by Bobby Hitz, who boasted a 21-4 record with 18 KO’s as a boxer, Hitz Boxing is the longest running boxing promoter in the Chicago area dating back to the bi-monthly boxing series the “Ramada Rumble,” held at the former Rosemont Ramada Inn. The organization currently promotes the wildly popular “Fight Night at the Horseshoe” at the Horseshoe Casino in Hammond, IN and is the subject of “Hitz Boxing,” a reality show airing on YouTube which has amassed over 5 million views. Over the years the organization has produced matches that have included some of the top names in boxing such as James Toney, Antonio Tarver, Montell Griffin, Iran Barkley, Andrew Golota and “Fast Fres Oquendo.

DIBELLA INKS FORMER CHAMP SERGIO MORA

sergio_mora_image
New York, NY (7/30/13) – With his promotional company DiBella Entertainment (DBE) being heavily involved in the middleweight divisions (154-168), promoter Lou DiBella has officially announced the signing of former junior middleweight world champion and WBC #7-rated middleweight Sergio “The Latin Snake” Mora (24-3-2, 7KO’s). The original Contender Champion is coming off a unanimous 10-round decision over Grzegorz Proksa on ESPN’s Friday Night Fights on June 28th of this year.

“I have always respected Lou for his bold ways and honesty,” said Mora. “Lou is very knowledgeable and experienced and he is passionate and really cares about his fighters and the sport as a whole. Having the opportunity to work with someone like Lou is a blessing and an honor. I want to fight the top 160-pounders in the world, and THE best is Sergio Martinez, who just happens to also be promoted by Lou.”

“Say what you want, but Mora is, and has been for many years, one of the most skilled middleweights in the world. His style has become much more appeasing at this stage of his career and coming off the big win over Proksa, he definitely factors into a major fight in the division sometime within the next 12 months,” said promoter Lou DiBella.

The brash and colorful Mora reached the high point of his career when won the WBC light middleweight championship with a gusty upset 12-round majority decision over the late-great Vernon Forrest in 2008. Mora would relinquish the title back to Forrest in his next bout and then see his career hit a standstill due to promotional issues. Mora is 2-2 in his last four bouts with both losses coming in highly controversial decisions to fellow Contender star Bryan Vera.

An announcement regarding Mora’s first fight under the DBE banner will be announced soon.

Thompson to fight Pulev in Heavyweight Eliminator

According to Dan Rafael of espn.com, former two-time world Heavyweight title challenger, Tony Thompson will take on Kubret Pulev on August 24th in Germany in will be an IBF title elimination bout.

“We now have received the sanction approval by the IBF,” said Team Sauerland’s Chris Meyer. “We will continue with our plan to stage the fight on Aug. 24.”

“It’s not something I could turn down,” Thompson told ESPN.com on Tuesday, one day after he opened his training at the Keystone Boxing Gym in Temple Hills, Md. “It was a no-brainer for me. I saw some film of (Pulev) and he looks pretty good. He’s fast and active. He’s a pretty good heavyweight fighter. It should be a fight with good action.”

Twice Thompson went to Price’s hometown of Liverpool, England, and knocked him out in exciting fights, in the second round in February and in the fifth round on July 6.

“I went there trying to make an opportunity for myself,” Thompson said.

“This will be a tough test for Pulev as he hasn’t boxed since beating Ustinov in the first leg of the IBF eliminator (box-off),” Meyer said. “Thompson has again entered world stage after beating David Price twice. Thompson may be much older than Pulev, but has made quite a number of big bouts in his career. His only two losses in the last 13 years were to Wladimir Klitschko.

“The bout was made under the condition that the winner becomes IBF mandatory contender to face the winner of Wladimir Klitschko versus Alexander Povetkin. That’s the big incentive for both camps.”

“I think people kind of forgot I only had two losses to the heavyweight champ of the world (since 2000),” Thompson said.

“Once I beat a guy, Price, that people considered a threat to Wladimir’s throne and was rated as the up-and-comer of the year, it opened a lot of eyes to what I am capable of.

“For me, this fight with Pulev is huge and I’m as excited as can be. Wladimir beat me twice and I can understand people being put off by a third fight, but for me it’s the only thing. He is the heavyweight champ of the world so if you are trying to be champion you have to go after him.”

DYNAMITE UNDERCARD SUPPORTS “THREE TO SEE” TRIPLEHEADER AT MOHEGAN SUN CASINO

UNCASVILLE, CT – Prior to the bulging tripleheader scheduled for a national television audience on the next edition of the Fight Night boxing series on NBC Sports Network, an equally full slate of undercard bouts are set to deliver knockout thrills to the live ringside audience at the Mohegan Sun Casino on Saturday night, August 3rd.

The night will end with the trio of 10-round TV fights that include middleweight Curtis “Showtime” Stevens, 24-3, 17 KOs, against Saul Roman, 37-9, 31 KOs, Tomasz Adamek, 48-2, 29 KOs, and Dominick Guinn, 34-9-1, 23 KOs, in a heavyweight affair, and a cruiserweight clash between “Fast” Eddie Chambers, 36-3, 18 KOs, and Thabiso Mchunu, 12-1, 9 KOs*. However, the preliminary schedule the begins the evening, looks just as good.

Vyacheslav “Czar” Glazkov, 14-1, 10 KOs, returns from his 10-round draw against Malik Scott, then 35-0, 12 KOs, to face Byron Polley, 25-15-1, 11 KOs, in a heavyweight 8-rounder that tops the undercard. Glazkov, of Ukraine, is one of the rising young stars of the division, and must topple his opponent from Michigan to restart his winning streak and regain the momentum he was building before the draw.

Philadelphia lightweight Karl “Dynamite” Dargan, 13-0, 7 KOs, looks to extend his undefeated run in a 6-round bout against Staten Island’s Michael Brooks. However, Brooks, an undefeated southpaw, 10-0, 2 KOs, and will fight hard to keep his own streak intact.

Undefeated Tony Harrison, of Detroit, 13-0, 10 KOs, takes on Camden, NJ’s Alex Sanchez, 2-2, 2 KOs, in a junior middleweight 6-rounder. Harrison, an Emanuel Steward protege, not only has more experience that his opponent, he has boxing in his bloodline. Tony’s grandfather was Henry Hank, one of the best contenders of the 1950s and 1960s. However, Sanchez is a tough fighter who has scored knockouts in each of his two victories, and will definitely come to fight. As they say, someone’s O must go.

Fighting for the fifth time this year and the third time at Mohegan Sun, New Haven welterweight Jimmy Williams, 4-0, 2 KOs, faces his toughest test to date when he battles Philadelphia’s Greg Jackson, 3-0, 1 KO, in a four-round bout. In his last appearance at Mohegan, Williams stopped Marques Jackson, 2-10, at the end of the third round of their scheduled four-round bout.

Looking to rebound from a knockout loss to Jason Sosa, 9-1-3, in January, Hartford’s Joseph “Chip” Perez, 10-2, 3 KOs, returns to Mohegan to face Ashbury Park, N.J., super featherweight Chris Green, 4-3-1, 1 KO, in a six-round bout. Green, a 5-foot-7 southpaw, looks to revive his career in his first fight since April of 2011, when he lost a six-round decision to Osnel Charles, 9-6.

New Haven welterweight Edwin Soto, 9-0-2, 4 KOs, ends a 14-month layoff in a another six-round bout. Soto last fought in June of 2012, knocking out previously-unbeaten Kevin Womack Jr. in the fourth round of their scheduled eight-round bout.

Sano, Jr. Finishes Colon in Front of Sold Out Crowd at Rocktagon 28

Las Vegas – July 29, 2013 Rocktagon 28 “Journey of Champions – El Paso” had it all—spectacular fights, an energetic crowd, and an ending so shocking, it will keep fans talking for weeks to come.

On Friday night, Rocktagon made its official debut in El Paso, Texas with an event that not only exceeded expectations, but also will likely go down as having one of the year’s best fight cards.

In the main event, Martin Sano Jr. left chaos in his wake after a controversial first-round knockout over “Bad Ass” Billy Colon.

Earlier in the week, Colon, a submission specialist, said he wanted to “keep the fight standing” and “look for the knockout.” This ultimately proved to be his undoing against a technically efficient striker like Sano, who took advantage of an early opening and landed a massive right hand that sent Colon hurling backwards on the canvas.

Sano immediately followed up with a few ground punches, which actually helped Colon regain consciousness. Colon recovered and appeared to be working for a leg lock, but the referee had already made his move after the initial knockdown in calling a halt to the fight 27 seconds into the first round.

A stunned Colon could do nothing more than look on in disbelief as Sano paraded around the cage in celebration of his third straight pro victory.

Every attempt from Colon to protest the stoppage fell on deaf ears following the fight. There is no rewind button for MMA referees, and all decisions are final.

While Sano likely wishes the bout would have ended more decisively, he’ll take a win however he can get it, especially over a highly respected veteran like Colon.

Quick finishes appeared to be the staple of the entire main card. In the co-main event, Patrick “Skar” Dixon wasted little time in submitting Fort Bliss Combatives team member Anthony Stevens.

The margin for error in MMA is small at a professional level and Stevens learned the hard way after a simple slip on a failed takedown attempt gave Dixon the split second he needed to transition to back mount and latch on the rear naked choke for the tap at 2:40 of the first round.

Many had to watch the replay just to see exactly what happened. Dixon could just as easily change his nickname to “Neo” from The Matrix for his cat-like reflexes and ability to counter so quickly off a mistake.

Speaking of mistakes, Joe Torrez is definitely learning from his after turning in a disappointing performance against Rodrigo Sotelo.

Initially, Torres controlled the bout with an early takedown off a beautiful belly to back suplex and a deep rear naked choke attempt. Sotelo somehow managed to weather the storm and get back to his feet.

Torrez appeared to panic after the failed submission attempt, and he became overzealous in the standup exchanges. This proved to be a big mistake against Sotelo, who found an opening for a huge uppercut that hurt the New Mexico native.

It was all downhill from there as Sotelo swarmed Torrez with a barrage of unanswered strikes to net the first round TKO stoppage at 2:42.

Perhaps the craziest fight of the night and quite possibly an early candidate for “Fight of the Year” was the lightweight scrap between Brian Castillo and Matthew Hunt.

For 15-minutes, Castillo and Hunt battled it out in an epic bout that should serve as the epitome of modern-day MMA. Fans and fighters dream about fights like this that incorporate every aspect of fighting while simultaneously providing exciting, non-stop action.

Castillo and Hunt left everything in the cage on Friday night in a bout that will be remembered for years to come. In the end, all three judges saw the contest in Castillo’s favor, but Hunt can certainly walk with his head held high.

In other bouts, Alida Gray earned a second round TKO stoppage over Jessica Armstrong; Stacey Sigala bullied Jazmin Quezada in a unanimous decision; Adam McGurk submitted David Ruelaz in the second round by rear naked choke; Julio Hinojosa earned a blistering 52-second TKO over Ibrahim “Lion Heart” Eid; Jesus Urbina submitted Alan Lerma in the first round by rear naked choke and Randy McCarty stopped Derek Perkins in the second round by TKO.

Former UFC heavyweight Darrill Schoonover made a special guest appearance during the event, and it was announced that he would be featured on Rocktagon’s card when the promotion returns to El Paso on September 28.

Until then, he is hard at work preparing for his August 25 bout in Russia against Alexander Emelianenko, the brother of legendary heavyweight Fedor Emelianenko.

Rocktagon MMA is the mixed martial arts division of Rocktagon Worldwide, a sports and music entertainment company. The 6’7” 18-year-old is in Belgium as part of Tyson Fury’s eight week training camp, helping him prepare for the biggest fight of his career and his father and trainer, Peter, believes the level of sparring and fitness work will be “invaluable” for Hughie.

“This is an invaluable experience for such a young kid in a training camp like this and it will speak volumes,” Peter said.

“He’s developing really well, but still has a lot to work on, but in such an environment you can expect Hughie to improve ten-fold.”

Making his professional debut in just March of this year, Hughie has wasted no time in building his experience and already boasts a record of eight wins with five knockouts, no defeats and no draws.

WBAN petitioning International Olympic Committee On behalf of elite amateur women boxers

PORTLAND, Ore. (July 29, 2013) – On behalf of elite female amateur boxers, Women Boxing Archive Network (WBAN) has begun a petition addressed to the International Olympic Committee to increase opportunities and prevent discrimination against female boxers, as well as other women athletes.

The WBAN petition is specifically addressed to President Jacques Rogge & Executive Board (EB) International Olympic Committee (I.O.C.), Lausanne, Switzerland; President Dr. Ching-Kuo Wu & Executive Committee – International Boxing Association, Lausanne, Switzerland (A.I.B.A).

WBAN is petitioning the International Olympic Committee (I.O.C.) to reconsider its decision to limited women’s boxing to only three weight-class divisions at the 2016 Olympics Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

By restricting female boxers to participate in only three divisions, female boxers that do not compete in those categories will not be able to compete in The Olympics. The men’s boxing division has 10 weight classes. WBAN believes the discrepancy between the sanctioned divisions for female vs. male boxers in The Olympics as discriminatory.

WBAN was informed on July 25, 2013 that the I.O.C. had decided that there would be no increase in weight classes for amateur female boxers in the 2016 Olympics. In a report WBAN published on the aforementioned date, the statement made by the I.O.C Executive Board HQ in Lausanne, Switzerland offering this explanation:

The EB discussed the topic of possible modifications to disciplines, events, quotas and competition formats at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, and reiterated that any request from International Federations that would result in a higher number of athletes or increased number of medals, thereby adding to the cost and complexity of the Games, would not be considered.

WBAN was also informed that this decision not only applied to female boxing but other sporting organizations including sailing, swimming and cycling.

WBAN is asking the public to sign this petition in hopes that the I.O.C. reconsiders its decision regarding the amount of 2013 Olympic weight classes for amateur female boxers.

Manny Pacquiao and Brandon Rios Climb the Great Wall, Visit Tiananmen Square and Prepare to Meet The People’s Republic of China’s National Media

Pacquiao_Rios_Great Wall 2
BEIJING (July 30, 2013) — Stop No. 2 on the Manny Pacquiao – Brandon Rios 23,722-mile international media tour to promote their historic 12-round welterweight rumble has landed them in Beijing. On Monday, Pacquiao, Rios and their respective trainers, Hall of Famer Freddie Roach and Trainer of the Year Robert Garcia, began the day with a little morning roadwork – approximately 3,000 steps worth — as they climbed a portion of the Great Wall, at Shuiguan, which was built during the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644), and is famous for its precipitous cliffs and beautiful views.

Before embarking on the massive climb, Rios and Garcia ducked into a souvenir stand and emerged wearing cowboy hats. “The rancheros have hit Beijing,” exclaimed Rios to the delight of the hundreds of tourists visiting and the media covering.

Pacquiao and Rios, trailed by media crews and newly-made fans, began the steep and arduous climb of the Great Wall, a military structure that was built from the 3rd Century BC to the 17th Century. With a total length of more than 20,000 kilometers, it is the only work built by human hands on this planet that can be seen from the moon.

“I hadn’t planned on beginning training camp until August 12, but I think I began it today,” said Rios, who raced up a portion of the steps against Pacquiao.

“Now I know that I’ve got my work cut out for me after racing against Brandon up those steps,” said Pacquiao. “He’s already in good condition! This is my third visit to Beijing and it always seems so new to me. It’s a great cultural experience that is saturated in history.”

Following a festive traditional Chinese lunch, the duo made a stop at Tiananmen Square where they walked around the historic area snapping photos and signing autographs for fans who recognized them.

Today, beginning at Noon, Pacquiao, Rios, Roach, Garcia, Hall of Fame promoter Bob Arum and Edward Tracy, President and CEO of Sands China Ltd, will host a news conference for national media at the Park Hyatt Beijing, followed by several hours of one-on-one interviews. Then it’s off to Shanghai for a Wednesday news conference at the Four Seasons.

QUOTABLES FROM THE NOTABLES:

Brandon Rios:
I can’t believe the beauty I have seen in Macau and Beijing. I have seen a life and culture I never imagined. It’s been an incredible experience for me. The media and the fans have been wonderful. I know I take a little getting used to but they seem to understand my sense of humor. I think some of them think I’m Chinese. The only other time I fought outside the U.S. was in Mexico back in 2008, against Ricardo Dominguez, and a lot of people thought I was Chinese there, too.

I want everyone in southern California to know that traffic on the 405 has nothing on Beijing’s rush hour.

I was surprised at how nervous I was before the first press conference in Macau. I don’t think the enormity and the significance of this event dawned on me until I walked out on the stage and saw hundreds of media there. All of a sudden I realized that I was headlining a major pay-per-view for the first time. It was emotional for me. But I’m over that now and I look forward to Beijing’s press conference today and the press conferences on the rest of the tour

My first impression of meeting Manny Pacquiao in Macau was that he was smaller than I thought he would be. I have an enormous amount of respect for him and what he has accomplished.

I will begin training camp on August 12 and work on conditioning and will start sparring right away. I love to kick off training camp with a 12-round sparring session within the first week or two to get me in the proper mindset. I will be sparring with a lot of southpaws in camp. It’s been a good while since I have fought one. I am looking forward to fighting at 147 pounds.

Manny makes a lot of mistakes and Robert and I will be working hard on making a plan to exploit them. I can’t let this opportunity slip through my fingers.

Manny Pacquiao:
I am very excited to be fighting in Macau. It’s a fertile market for boxing. New market and new people provide great exposure for boxing and it is a great way to increase the sport’s popularity globally. Hopefully this will help develop interest in boxing in mainland China. I think it’s good for boxing to have more good Asian boxers to turn pro. I think Macau can be a boxing capital of the world.

It will be nice to fight in a location where I will not have any jet lag. Macau and the Philippines share the same time zone and the same climate. No adjustments for me this time. Since Macau is only a 90-minute flight away from the Philippines, I expect a lo mre Filipinos to be in the arena for this fight.

I have seen Rios fight and I am confident that I will win the fight. One of my advantages is my experience against better opposition. I think the question that needs to be asked is, “Is Rios ready for me?”

Rios is an aggressive fighter. He likes to fight on the inside and toe-to-toe. He likes to fight, period. I am 100% confident of winning this fight. The fans will really enjoy the action.

I will begin three months of training in August when I return to the Philippines after the media tour. I’ll do six weeks of conditioning and building up my stamina, followed by a six-week training camp with Freddie Roach when he arrives in October. I’m 34 and I now need to train over a longer period. The focus of this camp will be on speed and footwork, which have been my advantages in previous successful fights. I’ll be more careful to avoid the careless error I made against Márquez.

I was in my best shape when I fought Márquez last December. I was winning the fight. I had taken control. But I got careless and made a mistake, being in the wrong place for him to land that final punch. But that’s boxing. That’s what makes it so exciting.

I am feeling a little pressure for this fight since I have lost my previous two. An impressive victory against Rios will raise my name again in boxing. My belief in God and training as hard as I can will help to relieve that pressure.

I need to prove I still can fight like the old Manny Pacquiao. I need to restore the public’s confidence in me and my abilities. It’s important that this be an impressive victory. I have already begun to visualize my fight with Rios.

Vitali Klitschko vs. Bermane Stiverne WBC purse bid postponed again

vitali_klitschko
OTTAWA, Canada (July 26, 2013) — When heavyweight contender Bermane “B. Ware” Stiverne (21-1, 20 KOs) upset Chris Arreola (35-3, 30 KOs) on HBO this past April 27, in a title elimination bout, it set-up the dangerous Canadian for a super fight versus future Hall of Famer and long-time World Boxing Council (WBC) World Heavyweight Champion, Vitali Klitschko (45-2, 41 KOs).

Stiverne completely dominated former world title challenger Arreola, dropping him in the third round, en route to a unanimous 12-round decision (118-109, 117-110, 117-110) for the vacant WBC Silver title.

A purse bid was set and postponed, reset and re-postponed. Finally, July 22 was supposed to be the final purse bid date when, surprisingly, the WBC once again granted another extension requested by the Team Klitschko, forcing the mandatory challenger to wait once again for his world title shot that he has now earned twice by winning a pair “title elimination” bouts. WBO No. 1 contender Stiverne, who is also rated No. 10 in the world by The Ring Magazine, had knocked out Ray Austin in the 10th round of their WBC heavyweight title eliminator on June 25, 2011.

“It’s a bit frustrating to hear only two days before the scheduled purse bid that it has once again been postponed,” explained Stiverne’s manager, Camille Estephan, CEO of Eye Of The Tiger Management (EOTTM). “We are waiting for a new date. At this point, we have worked really hard to secure potential venues. Ottawa’s Canadian Tire Centre and Montreal’s Bell Centre are still at the forefront. Regardless, Bermane is ready now, or in a few months, and the longer Klitschko plays politics rather than man up and fight, the more ready we will be and the older he will get. Bermane will KO him wherever and whenever it happens.”

In the meantime, though, fans can still be treated to world-class boxing in the Capital region on September 6. “For now,” Estephan noted, “we are focused on our September 6th card at the Casino Lac Leamy in Gatineau. We have undefeated lightweight Ghislain “Mani” Maduma (14-0, 9 KOs) defending his WBC Continental Americas belt and also fighting for the vacant NABF (North American Boxing Federation) championship. This win, if successful, should put him in the top 5 in the world (Maduma is presently rated No. 14 by the WBC). (Super featherweight) Baha Laham (12-0-1, 5 KOs) and (light heavyweight Andy Gardiner (8-0. 4 KOs) are also being showcased in separate eight- round fights. If you know anything about these two guys, I don’t have to tell you it’s going to be exciting.”

Tickets for Sept. 6th event are on sale now and very reasonably priced at $40.00 and $60.00, while tables of 10 may be purchased for $1,500, by visiting www.admission.com or at the Final Round Boxing Club, 15 Eccles Street in Ottawa. FORMER TWO-DIVISION WORLD CHAMPION ZSOLT ERDEI WANTS THE BEST CALLS OUT WARD

New York, NY (7/29/13) – Former light heavyweight and cruiserweight world champion Zsolt Erdei (33-1, 18KO’s) isn’t looking for any easy fights after suffering his first professional defeat in a razor-thin and questionable split decision loss to Denis Grachev in the first leg of the Monte-Carlo Million Dollar Super 4 Tournament. Erdei is instead offering up his services to super middleweight kingpin and ESPN.com’s pound-for-pound number two-ranked fighter in the world, Andre Ward. Ward, who is coming off a shoulder injury and extensive rehab, hasn’t fought since scoring a 10th-round TKO over Chad Dawson in September of last year. Erdei says he has no problem in moving down to super middleweight and would jump at the opportunity.

“When I decided to sign with Lou DiBella and fight in America, it was for me to face DBE the best boxers in the world. Ward is considered to be the best boxer in the world above the middleweight division and he is a great champion. I respect his skills very much, but I know that I have what it takes to get the job done and shock the world. A win over Ward makes me a superstar in America and that is my ultimate goal,” said Erdei.

Regarding his defeat to Grachev, which many ringside observers, including the Principality of Monaco, felt was unjust, Erdei takes the split decision loss in stride.

“Everybody knows that I won my last fight and was clearly robbed of the victory. For that reason, I still consider myself an undefeated two-division champion and I still want to fight the best.”

Promoter Lou DiBella echoed similar sentiments. “Many people who saw his fight with Grachev thought that Erdei won. Regardless though, he showed that he is still one of the best 168/175 lb. fighters in the world, having performed at the level that he did after not fighting for nearly two full years.”

When Ward was winning gold at the 2004 Summer Olympics, Erdei, himself a 1996 and 2000 Olympian, was already the WBO light heavyweight champion of the world, having won a dominant 12-round unanimous decision over Jesus Gonzalez in January of that same year.

Over the next five years, Erdei would successfully defend his title 11 times, before moving up in weight and claiming the WBC cruiserweight title with a 12-round decision over Giacobbe Fragomeni. In the bout with Fragomeni, Erdei conceded 17lbs. to the defending champion, but was still able to pull off the terrific feat with a majority decision.

After the victory, Erdei decided to retire from the sport, before reconsidering and coming back with a new goal: to take over America. Erdei signed with promoter Lou DiBella’s DiBella Entertainment and reeled off two straight victories. Erdei was scheduled to face former light heavyweight world champion Tavoris Cloud in December 2011 but was forced to pull out of the bout after suffering an injury during training. Yet another injury in training forced him out of his September 29, 2012, HBO date against Isaac Chilemba. By the time he fought Grachev this past March, he had been out of the ring for nearly two full years. Showing absolutely no ring rust in the bout, Erdei boxed beautifully against Grachev, sweeping the early rounds. As the fight wore on, Erdei got dragged into a bit of a slugfest, ultimately losing the 10-round split decision.

With many of the top super middleweights currently tied up, a bout between Ward and the two-division world champion, two-time Olympian, and only once-beaten European star Erdei seems to make perfect sense. Erdei just hopes he gets the opportunity to show that he is still one of the elite fighters in the world.

“To be the best, you have to beat the best. Beating Ward puts me in that position,” said Erdei.

DEMETRIUS ANDRADE TO TAKE ON VANES MARTIROSYAN ON SEPTEMBER 7TH FOR WBO JUNIOR MIDDLEWEIGHT TITLE LIVE ON HBO

andrade
PHILADELPHIA (July 29, 2013)—On Saturday September 7th, former U.S. Olympian and undefeated Demetrius Andrade will vie for his first world championship, when he takes on fellow former U.S. Olympian Vanes Martirosyan in a twelve round bout from the STAPLES Center in Los Angeles.

The bout, which will be televised live on HBO Championship Boxing, will be the co-feature to the Super Middleweight clash between Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. and Bryan Vera.

Demetrius Andrade of Providence, Rhode Island was a former world amateur champion and has a perfect professional mark of 19-0 with thirteen knockouts and is currently the number two contender for the WBO belt.

Vanes Martiroysan of Glendale, California is 33-0-1 with 21 knockouts.

Andrade, who is co-promoted by Banner Promotions and Star Boxing, was scheduled to contend for the belt on July 6th but an injury to then-champion Zaurbek Baysangurov forced the title to become vacant, thus setting up this showdown of undefeated former Olympians.

“I am looking forward to this fight and have been waiting for this fight ever since I walked into the gym at age 7”, said Andrade.

“I always wanted to be champion of the world and on September 7th I will be crowned champion. I wanted to win an Olympic gold medal and since they took that from me, I am going to take this world title.”

“I was a 2008 Olympian and he made it in 2004. I will show him that if I was around in 2003 and 2004, he would not have made the team”, finished Andrade.“This will be an outstanding fight and we worked hard on getting this fight on HBO”, said Banner Promotions CEO Arthur Pelullo.

“We feel that Demetrius has all the talent to become a star in this sport and only needed the opportunity on this kind of stage and on September 7th he will get that chance. I want to thank my partner Joe DeGuardia, HBO, Top Rank and the WBO for making this great fight. I have a feeling that after September 7th, not only will Demetrius be a world champion but he will be a household name and in line for even bigger fights.”

HALL-OF-FAMER WILFREDO GOMEZ HEADING TO BETHLEHEM, PA, TO SUPPORT RODRIGUEZ, VERDEJO ON AUG. 10 CARD AT SANDS CASINO

Bethlehem, PA—Wilfredo Gomez, one of the greatest of all Puerto Rican boxers, will be ringside Saturday evening, Aug. 10, cheering for fellow-countrymen Gamalier Rodriguez and Felix Verdejo in their scheduled fights at the Sands Casino Resort Bethlehem.

Rodriguez, of Bayamon, Puerto Rico, defends his NABO featherweight title in a 10-round bout against challenger Jorge Pazos, of Guamachil, Mexico, while unbeaten prospect Verdejo takes on Guillermo Delgadillo, of Walla Walla, WA, in a six-round junior lightweight contest.

The Rodriguez-Pazos and Verdejo-Delgadillo fights will be televised on Solo Boxeo Tecate, aired on UniMas. First of seven live fights begins at 7 pm.

Gomez (left), a pro from 1974 to 1989, won 44 out of 48 fights with one draw and 42 knockouts. He won the WBC super bantamweight title in 1977 when he got off the canvas in the first round to knock out defending champion Dong-Kyun Yum, of South Korea, in the 12th round of their scheduled 15-round fight in San Juan, Puerto Rico.

Over the next seven years, Gomez made a division-record 17 title defenses, defeating such Mexican standouts as Carlos Zarate, Juan “Kid” Meza, Roberto Rubaldino and Lupe Pintor.

In the middle of that streak, Gomez unsuccessfully challenged Salvador Sanchez, of Mexico, for the WBC featherweight title, but was stopped in the 11th round, suffering the first loss of his career.

After relinquishing his super bantamweight title, Gomez won the WBC featherweight belt when he outpointed fellow-Puerto Rican Juan LaPorte in 1984 in San Juan.

After losing that belt later in 1984 to Azumah Nelson, of Ghana, Gomez moved up to the junior lightweight division in 1985 and won the WBA world title at that weight by out-pointing Rocky Lockridge, of Tacoma, WA, over 15 rounds in San Juan.

One year later, Gomez lost the last of his titles to Alfredo Layne, of Panama, then won two more fights before retiring permanently in 1989.

Though he only stood 5-foot-5 and never weighed more than 130 pounds in his prime, Gomez, now 57, is considered one of the most prolific punchers in boxing history.

He was inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame in 1995.

Young manager Larry Army Potential power broker in boxing Signs Ivan Redkach, others negotiating for services

WORCESTER, Mass. (July 29, 2013) – In a relatively short period of time, Massachusetts-based attorney Larry Army went from questioning whether he was out of boxing, into a potential up-and-coming power broker among the leading managers in the industry.

The newest manager on the block is parlaying the tremendous success he had with his first and now former boxing client, undefeated world-rated super middleweight Edwin Rodriguez.

Army also successfully convinced Peter Manfredo, Jr. to come out of retirement after losing to Sakio Biko and reinvented him as a middleweight. Army guided Manfredo to eight quality wins, ultimately leading to Manfredo’s world title shot against Julio Chavez, Jr.

When his management relationship with Rodriguez ended after this past July’s championship final of the Monaco Million Dollar Super 4 Tournament, Army really thought he might be all done with boxing. “To be able to put Edwin Rodriguez into a position to become a millionaire and the thought that the Monaco fight would be my last in the sport was tough,” Army admitted.

However, before he left Monaco, the 42-year-old Army had already laid the foundation to continue his managerial work, and today his Elite Management is formally announcing the signing of unbeaten Ukrainian lightweight prospect Ivan “Junito” Redkach (14-0, 12 KOs) to an exclusive, long-term managerial contract.

Because Army was the architect of an incredibly well-designed campaign for Rodriguez, other high-profile, world-class boxers have recently contacted him about representing them.

“When I had the opportunity to speak to Ivan and see what type of athlete he is,” Army explained, “I knew there was the potential to do even bigger and better things. I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to work with him. He has everything real boxing fans want to see in a fighter; an entertaining style featuring pure knockout power. There’s no doubt in my mind that he’s on his way to becoming world champion.”

“Ivan regularly trains and spars in California with some of the top fighters from 135 pounds to 147 like (Miguel) Vasquez, (Michael) Katsidis, and (Daniel) Ponce De Leon. Standing 5′ 10″, he can fight effectively in any division from lightweight to welterweight. Unlike some other fighters, Ivan trains like a machine; he has dedicated his life to boxing and the pursuit to become the best boxer in the world. As a sample of his daily routine, Ivan runs 10 miles every morning, goes to the gym to work 12 rounds on the pads, and then finishes things off with a rigorous swim.”

Redkach, a southpaw now living in Los Angeles, is promoted by DiBella Entertainment and trained by Mario Morales, who has worked with world champions Brian Viloria and the late Edwin Valero. Rated No. 15 in the world by the World Boxing Council (WBC), the 27-year-old Redkach has knocked out 12 of his 14 professional opponents. The dangerous southpaw had a 260-40 amateur record and he was a 2008 Ukraine Olympic Team alternate.’

“I saw what Mr. Army did with Edwin Rodriguez and wanted him managing my career,” Redkach said. “He made Rodriguez a millionaire, built him to 24-0, and now he’s on the verge of a world title shot. I’m excited. One man’s loss is another man’s gain, I guess. I’m confident that Mr. Army will get me a shot at my dream of winning a world championship.”

Redkach action

“Ivan is the first of many significant signings Elite Management plans to make during the next six months,” Army concluded. “Elite Management guides the careers of blue-chip fighters to put them in position to be wealthy champions. We just don’t take a fighter’s money, we earn it.”

ABOUT ELITE MANAGEMENT: Found in 2008 by Atty. Larry Army in Massachusetts, Elite Management is a full-service boxing management firm focused on branding professional boxers. Elite Management is a proven expert in responsibly reviewing contracts, developing talent through effective matchmaking, gaining positive press, and attracting sponsorship and endorsement opportunities for athletes. Mr. Army is highly respected for successfully building a fighter’s team: researching, interviewing and securing the right trainer, strength-and-nutrition coach, nutritionist and cut-man. He is also known for organizing training camps for high-profile fights, as well as obtaining paid sparring partners.

Peter Fury: “Expect to see the best Tyson Fury”

London (29 July) After all the media attention of the past few weeks, trainer and uncle Peter Fury insists they are now “strictly business” as Tyson Fury’s eight week training camp begins.

The 24-year-old undefeated heavyweight sensation, Fury, is in Belgium to prepare for the biggest test of his career when he meets the former two-weight world champion David Haye at Manchester Arena on September 28th, live on Sky Sports HD Box Office.

“I’m very pleased to get the camp started as you can’t really train across in England with all the media attention,” Peter said.

“Over here there are no distractions, only training – no wives or kids, we are strictly business and on September 28th you can expect to see the best Tyson Fury to date.”

In Haye, 32, he meets the former WBA world heavyweight champion and former undisputed world cruiserweight champion, who boasts 24 knockouts from 26 wins.

But unlike Fury, Haye has twice tasted defeat in his career, retiring against Carl Thompson in 2004 and losing on points to Wladimir Klitschko in 2011, losing his WBA heavyweight crown in the process.

While Manchester’s Tyson boasts a perfect professional record, impressively winning all 21 of his bouts to date, with 15 of them ending inside the scheduled distance.

He is the former British, Commonwealth and Irish heavyweight champion and his trainer is pleased with his focus and conditioning ahead of this blockbuster fight.

“It would be a mistake for Haye to overlook this fight – Tyson is a consummate professional and already in really good shape,” Peter said.

“He has been switched on and focussed for other fights, but for this one he is very motivated.

“He already trains all the time and he’s in very good condition, so it’s just a case of honing him – he’s already very strong, so come fight time he’ll be peaking after a good eight week camp.”
