GENNADY “GGG” GOLOVKIN SETS HBO 2 DAYS VIEWING RECORD, PREPARES FOR SECOND HALF OF 2013

Gennady Golovkin
VENICE, CA (July 17, 2013) Boxing’s fastest rising star, middleweight world champion Gennady “GGG” Golovkin continues to impress in-and -out of the ring with record numbers for his television ratings.

This week HBO announced that it’s “2Days: Gennady Golovkin” documentary feature surrounding Golovkin’s knockout victory of Gabriel Rosado on JANUARY 19 was the highest rated ever of it’s acclaimed series with over three million total viewers.

Additionally, record numbers of viewers watched across Europe and Asia as Golovkin dismantled top rated middleweight contender Matthew Macklin on JUNE 29 in a bout, which also drew over 1.1 million viewers on HBO.

“We’re very excited that boxing fans in the US and across the globe are tuning in to Gennady’s fights and his 2Days documentary in record numbers. HBO did a terrific job capturing the unique elements which took place leading up to the Rosado fight which made for a compelling feature,” said Tom Loeffler, Managing Director of K2 Promotions.

“Gennady just returned home to Germany from a fantastic week as the guest of honor in Monte Carlo for the finals of the Million Dollar Super 4 Tournament where he was hosted by Prince Albert II and Princess Charlene of Monaco.”

Golokvin’s knockout of Macklin was his third title fight of the year and raised his record to 27-0-0 with 24 knockouts as he defended both his WBA and IBO Middleweight Titles. It also raised his knockout ratio to 88.89%, highest among all active titleholders in the sport.

“We’ve said from the beginning of the year that Gennady would fight five times this year and we’re planning his next two bouts,” said Loeffler. “He is anxious to return the ring and to continue providing fans with the spectacular performances they’ve grown accustomed to seeing from him.”

VIDEO: EDDIE CHAMBERS WORKOUT

“FAST” EDDIE CHAMBERS HOLDS MEDIA WORKOUT James Shuler Memorial Boxing Gym, Philadlephia, PA

Eddie Chambers
PHILADELPHIA – Inside the James Shuler Memorial Boxing Gym the temperature climbed steadily towards 100 degrees today as Philadelphian cruiserweight, “Fast” Eddie Chambers welcomed the media to his boxing workout.

Chambers, 36-3, 18 KO’s, is preparing for his upcoming NBC Sports Network Fight Night battle against South Africa’s Thabiso Mchunu, 12-1,9 KO’s. The bout will be part of a telecast that will begin at 10:30 PM EDT on Saturday, August 3rd and also features Curtis Stevens vs. Saul Roman in a 10-round NABF middleweight title main event.

Chambers’ Trainer, James Bashir worked the pads with Chambers and then oversaw the heavy-bag workout. Fellow Philadelphia favorite, Jesse Hart stepped into the ring to spar several rounds with Chambers, as Steve “USS” Cunningham offered encouragement from ringside.

Bashir watches Chambers on bag
Here’s what Chambers had to say:

Regarding his first official fight at cruiserweight. “It’s not so difficult to make 200. I can eat what I want. I’m not saying I’m gonna eat cheese steaks and all the stuff like that because I am staying away from the fatty foods. I’m trying to stay slim and trying to look the part as well as fight the part.”

Regarding fighting southpaw, Mchunu: “Anytime you fight a southpaw, when most of your career has been against orthodox fighters, it could become a little bit tricky. I’ve been indoctrinated into this (southpaw) game. I had a guy when I was 14 or 15 who was a southpaw, and I basically sparred with him almost every single day, at least 5-6 times a week and at that time I was doing it twice a day. And he was a very tricky southpaw, tall, about 6’4″ and fast. It was such a tough thing for me to figure out, but working with him taught me how to fight southpaws. I was basically doing that for years, maybe 4 or 5 years, I was sparring with him nearly every single day. It showed me the way.”

Mchunu is highly ranked but very unknown, what are your thoughts on him: “He’s a bit shorter, he’s a bit difficult, in some of the tapes I’ve seen in some of the tapes I’ve seen of him, but it’s not something that’s too tough for me to handle.”

How does your arm feel after the injury in the Adamek fight: “It feels great now. I’ve been able to do the same thing with my left arm as I’ve been able to do with my right. I’m pretty much ready to go right now.”

Chambers spars with Jesse Hart
Regarding sparring with Jesse Hart: “Yeah, we’ve got that shining star prospect, Jesse Hart coming in here, former Olympian. I always want to get the young studs, the ones that got something to prove and the ones are trying to make it to the next level because when you bring those kind of guys in they make you raise your level. I always think, ‘look at this little young guy, this little youngster, he thinks he’s going to just beat me down.’ That’s just not going to happen, you know what I mean? So that makes you work harder and you prepare better.

Falowo’s showdown against hard-hitting Chatman highlights spectacular July 27th undercard

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (July 15th, 2013) — Leave it to promoter Jimmy Burchfield to produce the brightest post-Independence Day fireworks display in New England.

In addition to the highly-anticipated showdown between Rich Gingras (13-3, 8 KOs) and Vladine Biosse (15-2-1, 7 KOs) for the New England Super Middleweight Title, Classic Entertainment & Sports has put together an epic undercard for its Saturday, July 27th, 2013 boxing event at Twin River Casino in Lincoln, R.I.

As an added bonus, Twin River and CES have teamed up to offer fight fans an exclusive rewards offer with their ticket purchase (see below for details), and CES has upped the ante for VIP customers by including an additional $25 gift certificate to either Meritage of Chardonnay’s restaurant in Rhode Island with the purchase of every $126 Jimmy’s Club VIP ticket.

Popular middleweight prospect Thomas Falowo (10-1, 7 KOs) of Pawtucket, R.I., could steal the show in the eight-round co-feature when he faces hard-hitting southpaw Chris Chatman (10-2-1, 5 KOs) of Jersey City, N.J. The undercard of “Game On,” appropriately titled with Twin River celebrating its recent launch of table games, also features the professional debut of highly-touted female bantamweight Marcia Agripino and the return of Woonsocket, R.I., fan-favorite Joe Gardner (11-6-1, 1 KO) in a six-round super middleweight bout.

Chatman is no stranger to Rhode Island; he fought unbeaten light middleweight prospect and soon-to-be world-title challenger Demetrius Andrade of Providence in a memorable, six-round bout at Twin River in 2009. Andrade won the fight by unanimous decision, but many ringside observers — and Chatman himself — felt Chatman won the fight. The diminutive, 5-foot-8 southpaw returned to Twin River two years later and this time left no doubt about the outcome, stopping Rahman Yusubov in five rounds.

In between those Twin River bouts, Chatman also racked up impressive wins over then-unbeaten prospects Alberto Herrera and Lester Gonzalez and also fought to a draw against Charles Hatley, who was 14-0 at the time.

Falowo has been on quite a role himself; since suffering his first and only loss in May of 2012, he’s won four consecutive bouts — three by knockout — and, in the process, has cleaned house against the region’s top middleweight prospects with wins over Julio Garcia of Boston, Mass., and Tylon Burris of Hartford, Conn.

“This could be a main event on any other card,” Burchfield said. “I applaud both fighters for stepping to the table and challenging themselves. These are the kind of fights that matter, and these are the kind of fights fight fans want to see.”

Gardner will also face a tall task on July 27th as he looks to rebound from his close, split-decision loss to Gingras in May when he takes on Queens, N.Y., veteran Alexander Mancera (8-5-1, 5 KOs). Gardner had put together a solid win streak with victories over Phil Burnette, Alex Amparo and Reynaldo Rodriguez prior to the fight against Gingras, while Mancera will end his nine-month layoff in the same venue where he lost fought in a knockout loss to Kevin Cobbs in October.

Agripino, a Groton, Conn., native, will debut against Brooklyn’s Vanessa Greco (1-2-3) and Providence super middleweight KJ Harrison-Lombardi (1-0) will make his Twin River debut against Boston’s Maceo Crowder (2-1) in a four-round bout. “Game On” will also feature the professional debut of Hartford light middleweight “Jabbin'” Joe Wilson Jr., who will battle Saul Almeida (0-2) of Framingham, Mass., in a four-round bout. All fights and fighters are subject to change.

The main event between Providence’s Biosse (15-2-1, 7 KOs) and Pawtucket’s Gingras (13-3, 8 KOs) will be for Biosse’s New England Super Middleweight Title, which he has successfully defended three times since winning it in 2010. Gingras, a former contestant on the reality television series The Contender, is aiming for his third consecutive win and possibly his fourth in his last five fights since returning from a three-year layoff in 2012.

Tickets for “Game On” are $41.00, $76.00, and $126.00 (VIP) and can be purchased by calling CES at 401.724.2253/2254, online at www.shop.cesboxing.com or www.twinriver.com, at the Players Club booth at Twin River, or through any TicketMaster location. Doors open 6 p.m. with the first bout scheduled for 7.

(Twin River has waived its 18+ rule for “Game On.” Anyone under the age of 18 must be accompanied by an adult and must enter through the West entrance.)

New York’s Ajose, a 2000 Olympian for Nigeria, won an eight-round unanimous decision over Rynell Griffin in his last fight. Philadelphia’s Lundy has defeated former Lightweight titlist David Diaz and current Lightweight titlist Richar Abril, but is looking to get back to his winning ways following back-to-back losses to Viktor Postol and Ray Beltran.

The good news for the fans of Friday Night Fights is that both these experienced fighters are not hard to find—they will be right in front of each other all night and that should make it a good night of fights.”

PEDRO AND ALBERTO GUEVARA TO CO-HEADLINE TELEVISA/FOX DEPORTES TELEVISED EVENT IN PLAYA DEL CARMEN, MEXICO ON JULY 20

LOS ANGELES, July 17 – The fighting Guevara brothers, Pedro and Alberto, will co-headline a star-studded fight card at Domo de la Colosio in Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo, Mexico, with each bout holding serious world title implications for the natives of Mazatlan.

In the 12-round main event, Pedro “Jibran” Guevara defends his WBC Silver Light Flyweight Championship against former World Champion Mario “Dragoncito” Rodriguez. In the co-main event, former world title challenger Alberto “Metro” Guevara takes on Jonathan “Pitbull” Vidal in a 10-round bout for the vacant WBC International Bantamweight Championship.

Plus, Ivan “Nino Maravilla” Morales, the younger brother of the legendary Erik Morales, puts his WBC International Silver Super Flyweight belt on the line against Alejandro “Terrible” Morales and Roberto “Tito” Manzanarez faces Francisco “Chiko” Camargo for the WBC Youth Intercontinental Lightweight Championship.

Guevara vs. Rodriguez is presented by Golden Boy Promotions and Cancun Boxing de Pepe and sponsored by Corona, Periodico QueQui and Quintana Roo Tourism. Doors open at 6:00 p.m. CT and the first fight begins at 6:30 p.m. CT. The Televisa broadcast will air on Canal 5 beginning at 10:30 p.m. CT in Mexico and the FOX Deportes broadcast will air live at 9:00 p.m. ET/6:00 p.m. PT in the United States with commentary being provided by Mauricio Cardenas, Israel Vazquez and Daniel Ponce De Leon.

To purchase tickets call Carlos Milhe at: +529841848420

Defending his WBC Silver Super Flyweight Title for the first time, Pedro “Jibran” Guevara (19-1-1, 13 KO’s) plans on delivering the message to his peers at 108 pounds that he’s ready for another shot at a world championship. A former NABF light flyweight champion, Mazatlan’s Guevara lost a razor-thin split decision to John Riel Casimero in a fight for the IBF Junior Bantamweight World Championship last August, but after coming back strong with a win over Raul Garcia in March, Guevara is knocking on the world title door once again.

Guasave’s Mario “Dragoncito” Rodriguez (15-7-4, 11 KO’s) has a deceptive pro slate, especially when you consider that he is 5-1-1 in his last seven bouts, a string that includes a win over Nkosinathi Joyi last September that earned him the IBF Minimumweight World Championship. After losing the belt to Katsunari Takayama in March, the 24-year-old will now move up to 108 pounds to challenge Guevara.

22-year-old Alberto “Metro” Guevara (17-1, 6 KO’s) is another fighter attempting to move back into the world title picture after suffering the lone loss of his career last December to IBF Bantamweight World Champion Leo Santa Cruz. After a gritty effort against Santa Cruz, Mazatlan’s Guevara returned in March with a win over Jose Alfredo Tirado, and he’ll look to continue his winning ways on July 20.

The latest in a seemingly endless line of top prospects from Puerto Rico, San Juan’s Jonathan “Pitbull” Vidal (17-0, 9 KO’s) has big shoes to fill when it comes to the greats that have come from his island, but boxing insiders believe the talented 23-year-old has the potential to one day join them in the hearts of Puerto Rican fight fans. He faces a stiff test in hostile territory against Guevara on the 20th as they continue one of boxing’s most historic rivalries, Mexico vs. Puerto Rico. The two will battle it out for the vacant WBC International Bantamweight Title.

The brother of legendary future Hall of Famer Erik Morales, 21-year-old Ivan “Nino Maravilla” Morales (21-0, 13 KO’s) is making a name for himself in the family business having raced out to a fast start since turning pro in 2009. The WBC International Silver Super Flyweight Champion, Tijuana’s Morales will be seeking his second successful title defense against Alejandro “Terrible” Morales (13-1, 7 KO’s) of Los Mochis.

18-year-old Los Mochis phenom Roberto “Tito” Manzanarez (23-1, 19 KO’s) already has 24 fights as a pro and he’s doesn’t appear to be slowing down anytime soon. Having scored knockout wins over Eugenio Lopez and Oscar Arenas in his two fights since the lone loss of his career to Alejandro Barrera last November, Manzanarez hopes to leave the ring with his title belt when he fights Camargo for the WBC Youth Intercontinental Lightweight Championship. Guasave’s Francisco “Chiko” Camargo (7-1-1, 7 KO’s) is a crowd pleasing warrior who has ended all of his pro wins by knockout, with six of those coming in the first round. Clearly seeking to finish as soon as the bell rings, Camargo promises to check Manzanarez’ chin early and often in their upcoming clash.

Also in action will be junior middleweight prospect Hugo “The Boss” Centeno (18-0, 9 KO’s) of Oxnard, California who will face hard-hitting Chihuahua native Isaac Mendez (16-10, 14 KO’s) in an eight-round matchup.

In other undercard fights, Mazatlan junior lightweight Jorge Gallegos (5-1, 3 KO’s) will battle Cancun’s Daniel Sabido (3-1) in a four-round match, junior featherweights Guillermo Rodriguez (6-1, 2 KO’s) of Torreon and Esdras Acosta (4-5-1, 3 KO’s) of Cancun meet in a six-round showdown.

Opening up the event will be two intriguing six-round bouts that will see Los Mochis lightweight Miguel Angel Gonzalez (11-0, 10 KO’s) meet Chetumal’s Alberto Cupido (7-9-2, 6 KO’s) and Los Angeles junior welterweight Jessie Roman (13-0, 8 KO’s) squaring off against Playa del Carmen’s Jesus Hernandez (2-2, 1 KO).

HEATHER “THE HEAT” HARDY RETURNS TO THE RING ON JULY 24 IN NYC

NEW YORK, NEW YORK – On Wednesday, July 24, 2013, Heather “The Heat” Hardy (Brooklyn, NY pro record: 5-0-0) returns to the Roseland Ballroom in New York City against Cassie Trost (Seattle, WA pro record: 1-1-1) in a six-round bout. Hardy, a super bantamweight, last fought on April 4, 2013, winning her rematch with Mikayla Nebel by unanimous decision. In the main event. Yuri Foreman (Brooklyn, NY pro record: 30-2-0, w/ 8 KOs) will face Jamaal Davis (14-9-1 w/ 6 KOs) in an eight-round bout. Along with Hardy and Foreman, undefeated prospects such as Travis Peterkin, Ytalo Perea, Luis Olivares, Luis Cruz, and Emmanuel De Jesus will be featured on this latest installment of the “Broadway Boxing” series, sponsored by DiBella Entertainment (DBE) and 50 Cent’s SMS Promotions.

Hardy said, “I’ve been working really hard in the gym and it’s going to show in that ring on July 24. I know that my coach, Devon Cormack, has prepared me well and I will do whatever he asks in order to win this fight. Adjustments are made every round that I fight, so I prepare by making sure I’m physically able to do what’s asked of me. I’m in shape, on my weight, and I’m ready to go. I can’t wait to see my fans fill the Roseland Ballroom. I’m fighting for all the women boxers out there. We belong on big cards and we prove that every time we fight. Thank you to promoter Lou DiBella for giving me an opportunity to showcase my abilities on a big show.”

Devon Cormack, Team Hardy’s trainer and manager, said, “Heather’s preparation for this fight is similar to all her other fights. She needs to be in the best shape she can be, ready to go all six rounds without a break. She will be prepared to execute whatever her corner asks her to do during the fight. I’ve seen what her opponent does, and Heather just needs to execute my instructions in every round. Heather’s matches on DiBella’s cards have captured the New York audience, because they have all demonstrated that the female boxers have learned their craft to the point where they are equally as talented and exciting to watch as the men are.”

TONY GRANO READY FOR HEAVYWEIGHT BREAKTHROUGH AGAINST TOMASZ ADAMEK

UNCASVILLE, CT – Heavyweight Tony Grano, 20-3-1, 16 KOs, has been trying to punch his way through the heavyweight division since 2005, but the boxer has yet to secure the signature win needed to truly make his mark. Grano has battled and beaten a number of solid heavyweights and took home a few minor belts, but nothing that Grano has accomplished thus far has led to the breakthrough he so desires.

Grano could take a big step toward his goal on August 3rd when he encounters the biggest challenge of his career, former two-division world champion Tomasz Adamek, 48-2, 29 KOs. The 10-round fight is part of the triple header to be nationally televised by NBC Sports Network as part of their Fight Night boxing series.

The other bouts on the broadcast, from the Mohegan Sun Casino in Uncasville, CT, are middleweight Curtis Stevens against Saul Roman, and cruiserweight Eddie Chambers versus Thabiso Mchunu. The three 10-rounders begin at 10:30 PM ET.

A win over Adamek on Fight Night is exactly the feat Grano needs to make his name and open the door for an even bigger opportunity. Adamek not only has two world titles to his credit, he has been a major player in the heavyweight division since moving up almost four years ago, with his gutsy title challenge against Vitali Klitschko in 2011 being his only loss in the division. So if Grano can pull the upset next month against this top contender, his options – and potential paydays – will be better than ever before.

Grano’s heavy hands are his best weapon – in his previous four starts, three wins ended in knockouts, while he lost the fourth on points to Eric Molina in April . Tony won the NABF belt with a 4th round KO of DaVarryl Williamson last summer, and halted Brian Minto in three rounds before that. Other recent knockout victims include Dominique Alexander and Travis Kauffman.

Of course, Adamek is a tough customer with a granite chin, but Grano will also hold an uncommon home-state advantage over the Polish-born and New Jersey-based contender. Perhaps Tony’s proven punching power and hometown crowd can give him the edge he needs to shock the former champ.

Every fighter waits for that perfect opportunity to prove what he’s made of. For Tony Grano, that chance finally comes against Tomasz Adamek on August 3rd.

“THREE TO SEE” FIGHT INFO:
August 3rd “Three To See” card at Mohegan Sun, Uncasville, CT. In the main event Curtis Stevens and Saul Roman will clash for 10-rounds in a middleweight war. Heavyweight, Tomasz “Goral” Adamek will take on Tony Grano, Hartford, CT, 20-3-1, 16 KO’s, for 10-rounds. Vyacheslav “Czar” Glazkov will be featured on the undercard in an 8 round heavyweight fight, opponent TBA.

Tyson to promote August 23 ESPN show

Mike Tyson weighin_121207_001a
Mike Tyson has thrown his name into the promotional ring and will promote the season Finale of ESPN’s Friday Night Fights on August 23rd at The Turning Stone Resort Casino in Verona, NY according to Dan Rafael of espn.com

Junior lightweight world titleholder Argenis Mendez (21-2, 11 KOs) will make his first title defense when he faces Arash Usmanee (20-1, 10 KOs) in the main event. In the co-feature, Claudio Marrero (14-0, 11 KOs) will face Jesus Andres Cuellar (22-1, 18 KOs) for a vacant interim featherweight title.

“We are thrilled to be finishing off the ‘Friday Night Fights’ season with Mike Tyson’s first-ever fight card as a promoter,” said ESPN senior director of programming and acquisitions Brian Kweder, who programs boxing for the network. “The quality of the card that he and his team have put together for boxing fans is fantastic.”

“I think Marrero is a stud,” Iron Mike Productions promoter Garry Jonas said. “I expect him to handle Cuellar and show his skills on national TV. And Mendez-Usmanee will be an entertaining fight. Usmanee is a go forward guy and Mendez loves guys who come forward. We knew he had an optional defense we could make before we’d have to fight Barthelemy, so we figured let’s give Usmanee the shot because we thought he beat Barthelemy.”

“We’ve been around going on two years and we have a champion [Mendez], some ranked fighters and a lot of good talent, but we weren’t getting the TV dates,” Jonas said. “There’s not enough to go around from HBO, Showtime, ESPN and the others. We had to do something to bring notoriety and attention and Mike was the perfect fit.

“We brought Mike down to see what we were doing at Acquinity Sports. We have our fighters live and train with us in Florida. We give them a really disciplined environment. We really wanted to put more organization in it, make it like a team. When Mike saw what we were doing he said it reminded him of what it was like when he was with [late trainer and adoptive father] Cus D’Amato when he was young. Hopefully, he will bring us some of the attention we need. But besides that he will help us with the young fighters, work with them, help recruit them. We hope to do some interesting things.”

Said Henry Rivalta, who heads boxing operations for the company, “Mike sees how we are a mentor for the fighters, a situation that he had with Cus. He was happy with what he saw from us and he said he is going all in.”

EDWIN RODRIGUEZ TO VISIT ESPN STUDIOS IN BRISTOL TOMORROW AFTERNOON

edwin-rodriguez
New York, NY (7/16/13) – Fresh off his scintillating first-round annihilation of Denis Grachev in the coveted Monte-Carlo Million Dollar Super 4 Tournament finale in Monaco this past Saturday, red-hot, top-rated super middleweight contender Edwin “La Bomba” Rodriguez (24-0, 16KO’s) will visit the ESPN Studios in Bristol, CT, tomorrow afternoon. Rodriguez will spend a few hours at the studios participating in a number of media activities and discussing his sensational victory from this past Saturday.

The WBC #3, WBA #3, IBF #3 and WBO #5-rated Rodriguez will also be featured on this evening’s live ESPN.com weekly boxing show “Making the Rounds” via Skype from his home in Worcester, MA, and will be ringside this Friday at Rockingham Park in Salem, NH, for this week’s edition of ESPN Friday Night Fights.

“Words cannot describe how I feel right now,” said a jubilant Rodriguez. “I am still just so excited. This was the biggest and most important win of my career and I feel absolutely amazing. I have waited a long time to get to this point in my career and now I am excited to see what the future holds.”

Regarding his upcoming visit, Rodriguez seemed to be equally as thrilled.

“I am really looking forward to visiting the studios. This will be my first time there, and I feel honored that they have asked me to come out. This is a great opportunity for me to touch base with the fans both here in the US and around the world.”

While Rodriguez is still on cloud nine from his recent victory, which carried a $600,000 grand prize, he is most happy to be back home with his family.

“I’m ecstatic to be home and to spend time with my children and my wife. I am especially happy to spend time with my three-month-old son and get to know him since I was in training camp right after his birth. We are headed to Disney World!”

Once Rodriguez returns home from his family vacation he will then begin discussions with promoter Lou DiBella who is already working on his next fight.

Unbeaten prospect Toka Kahn-Clary Leaves path of destruction in wake

PROVIDENCE (July 16, 2013) – In only one year fighting as a professional, unbeaten Providence super featherweight prospect Toka “T Nice” Kahn-Clary’s (6-0, 5 KOs), has left a patch of destruction in his wake, crisscrossing the country on his journey.

Last Friday night in his first scheduled six-round bout, the 21-year-old native of Liberia annihilated newly crowned Texas State lightweight champion Pedro Pablo Torres (7-6-2, 5 KOs), dropping him three times en route to another impressive victory by second-round technical knockout, on the non-televised portion of the Top Rank-promoted ESPN Friday Night Fights card at Texas Station Casino in Las Vegas.

In seven pro fights, including a “no contest” due to a cut he suffered, Kahn-Clary has dropped his opponents a total of 16 times, peaked by six knockdowns in his last two fights.

“Good conditioning is part of it,” he spoke about his increased power, “but (head trainer) Peter (Manfredo, Sr.) has worked hard with me on sitting on my punches. You don’t want your opponent walking through your punches, so you need to punch effectively to keep him back. I didn’t think I’d knock this guy (Torres) out but, when I touched him in the first round, I knew I could take him out and that’s what I did in the second.

“I feel like I’m improving. I get good sparring at Manfredo’s Gym and also with Luis Rosa in New Haven. I have to thank him and his family for being so helpful. Making weight is never a problem for me. I’m always on weight because I think it’s my responsibility as a professional and not making weight would embarrass me and my coach. I’ve had a lot of fights and that’s good, but I’d fight every week if I could. I want my name to be recognized and the only way to do that is to fight often in different places and keep winning impressively. I want to be recognized as a top fighter for me, my trainer and family.”

Toka3
Torres had been stopped only once in 14 previous fights and Kahn-Clary’s promoter, Top Rank, matched Torres against Kahn-Clary to give Toka rounds. “They were as surprised as anybody that Toka stopped him so early because they thought the fight would go six rounds,” Manfredo explained. “We’re going to need rounds (Kahn-Clary has fought only 14 rounds as a pro) as he faces tougher opponents. He’s only gone four rounds once and that was after waiting 7 ½ hours in the dressing room in a swing bout.

“Toka hit this kid so solid with a shot in the second round that I was surprised he go up to continue. Toka then jumped on him right away and ended it. He’s an accurate puncher with good speed who has good weight distribution. He’s really adjusted to the professional style, too. He stopped some guys in the amateurs but that’s all about scoring points. Now, he’s hitting guys on the chin with smaller gloves. Toka’s been working on keeping his feet under him. He’s so quick and accurate that all he has to do is let his hands go. He’s been throwing harder combinations in his past few fights and everything’s been set-up by his jab.”

Kahn-Clary, who captured a gold medal at the 2010 U.S. National Golden Gloves Tournament, fights out of the new Manfredo Boxing Sports Fitness gym in Narragansett, Rhode Island.

LIGHTWEIGHTS JOHN MOLINA, JR. AND UNBEATEN MICKEY BEY MEET IN 10-ROUND MAIN EVENT

John Molina Jr.
HERMAN OAKS, CA (July 16, 2013) – One is now a veteran member of the Goossen Tutor Promotions stable; the other is a newcomer. One is from the West Coast; the other from the east. But while they differ in those aspects of their lives, John Molina, Jr. and Farah Ennis share at least three similar qualities: both are hitting their prime boxing years at age 30; neither one lacks in confidence and they both come to fight.

Molina (25-3, 20 KOs), from Covina, California and Philadelphia native Ennis (21-1, 12 KOs) will take on undefeated opponents from Floyd Mayweather’s promotional company in this Friday night’s “ShoBox: The New Generation” doubleheader from The Joint at Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada. The SHOWTIME telecast begins at 10:00 p.m. ET/PT (delayed on the West Coast).

Opposing the hard-hitting Molina in the scheduled 10-round lightweight main event will be Mickey Bey, Jr. (18-0-1, 9 KOs). The co-feature will be a scheduled 10-round super middleweight bout pitting Ennis against Swedish-born Badou Jack (14-0, 10 KOs).

“I am looking to get back on track,” Molina, who recently switched back to his longtime former trainer Joe Goossen, said. “My last fight (a questionable majority decision loss to undefeated Russian Andrey Klimov last month) was a setback. I still think I did enough to win and I know I’m in phenomenal shape and I plan to go out and dominate this fight. All the ducks are in order; the engines are firing on all cylinders. I think it’s going to be a great night this Fridayand I am very excited to be fighting again on SHOWTIME on their ‘ShoBox’ series.”

“Mickey Bey is undefeated, a good boxer and he fights out of the Mayweather camp,” Goossen acknowledged. “Being with ‘Money,’ he’s got everything anyone could have at a camp. Obviously, nobody that’s been put in front of him has been able to solve the puzzle. It’s our job to do that. It’s going to be tough; he’s a tough kid. But I have every belief in my fighter that he is going to win the fight. John has been training very hard. He’s strong right now. He’s looking a lot like you would expect John Molina to look, and that bodes well. He’s very confident that this is going to be a fight that people are going to be talking about afterwards, and so am I.”

“Simply put, John is a very dangerous fighter which translates into havng a television friendly style,” promoter Dan Goossen pointed out. “And if he can come out and beat the undefeated Bey in spectacular fashion, I believe it puts him right back into the thick of the world championship pool.” Goossen continued, “As for Ennis, this is his opportunity to show he belongs with the other highly regarded super middleweights.”

Ennis, who is trained by his father Derek “Bozy” Ennis, will be appearing in his second fight since signing on with Goossen Tutor. He registered a unanimous decision victory over highly regarded veteran Anthony Hanshaw on the ESPN televised Molina-Klimov undercard last month. His only loss was five fights ago by controversial majority decision to 10-0 Alexander Johnson. In going up against the 29-year old Badou, a 2008 Olympian representing Gambia, who knocked out Michael Gbenga on the Mayweather-Robert Guerrero undercard, and traveling west to fight under the big spotlight in Las Vegas on SHOWTIME, the ever-stoic Ennis sees this as nothing more than business as usual.

“It’s just another fight. I keep my emotions on an even keel,” said Ennis, dubbed “The Quiet Storm” because as his co-manager Eddie Woods says: “When he lets those guns go, it’s like thunder and lightning.”

Moz Gonzalez, Ennis’ other co-manager added, “We’re coming out to win, not just as an opponent. They say they are going to use Farah as a steppingstone, but that is what we are planning to use Badou Jack for.”

“What motivates me is that winning this fight leads to the next fight; a bigger fight. More money. And just keep on moving up the ladder toward a world title,” Ennis explained.

Frampton withdraws from Saturday’s fight due to ear perferation

Super Bantamweight contender Carl Frampton had to pull out of Saturday’s fight with Evereth Briceno due to a perforated eardrum according to Dan Rafael of espn.com

The bout was due to be the co-feature for the Heavyweight showdown between Malik Scott and Dereck Chisora in London.

“Bitterly disappointed to announce that Carl Frampton is out of his fight Saturday,” manager Barry McGuigan tweeted on Tuesday afternoon. “The BBB of C have ruled he is unfit to fight.”

“I’m upset to have to announce that I have been ruled out of my fight on Saturday by the (British board),” Frampton tweeted. “A specialist initially informed me I was fit to box. (Tuesday) the BBB of C ruled me out. I’m so sorry, especially to the people who were coming to support me. It’s been an amazing camp and I’m gutted that I wont be able to showcase my improvements in Wembley.”

HOT PROSPECT BRUNO ESCALANTE LOOKING TO CONQUER SUPER FLYWEIGHT DIVISION

SAN CARLOS, CA (July 16, 2013) – Hot prospect, Bruno Escalante (8-1-1, 4 KOs) is looking to make a name for himself in the Super flyweight division. Born in Cebu City, Philippines, Escalante now resides in Northern California where he trains with Nonito Donaire, Brian Schwartz and Mike Bazzel.

Having won his last fight by knockout by way of a vicious body shot, Escalante feels his power will be more evident as he’s been improving on his body attack. His next opponent will be Manuel Galaviz (7-10, 4 KOs) of Sonora, Mexico on July 26, 2013 at Fox Theater in Redwood City, California. Escalante vs. Galviz will be the co-main attraction of the night.

“I know I have the ability to take out my opponents and slow them down with hard body shots,” said Escalante. “I’ve been improving on body attack for the last few months and I can see why it’s so important to go downstairs. With every fight I’m feeling more comfortable throwing my right hook to the ribs. I’m getting better every time I step in the ring.”

Manager Herb Stone feels Escalante has the ability to become a world champion and feels his style is fan friendly. Escalante is known for being explosive with his punches.

“Bruno has a lot of talent and he has the skills to become a world champion,” Stone said. “This will be his third fight of the year and I can see the improvement with each fight. He’s becoming very popular in his hometown of San Carlos where he trains with some of the best fighters in the world. The Fox Theater in Redwood City is becoming a great venue to build up his fan base. I see him fighting for a regional title very soon.”

Training with Nonito Donaire has been very instrumental and inspiring to Escalante’s career. Donarie started off at the smaller weights and worked his way to the top of the pound for pound list, a feat Escalante sees as inspiration.

“Nonito is one of the best fighters in the world,” stated Escalante. “He suffered a loss early in his career but bounced back to gain international recognition with an incredible winning streak. I know if I work hard I can become a world champion and represent my country with honor, just like Donaire and Pacquiao. The time is now to take my career to the next level. On July 26th I’m coming to make a statement.”

AJOSE-LUNDY MEET AT CROSSROADS ON ESPN FRIDAY NIGHT FIGHTS

hank-lundy_harney
New York, NY (7/16/13) – There comes a point in almost every fighter’s career when they have to face a crossroads. This Friday night, in the main event of ESPN’s Friday Night Fights, WBC #3-rated junior welterweight Olusegun Ajose (31-1, 14KO’s) and longtime lightweight contender “Hammerin'” Hank Lundy (22-3-1, 11KO’s) will face just that when the two square off in their 10-round junior welterweight showdown. The bout, promoted by DiBella Entertainment in association with Gary Shaw Productions and Classic Entertainment & Sports, will carry heavy implications for the two pugilists’ respective careers. The winner puts himself in a very good position in the talent-laden 140lb. division, while the loser sees his career fall deep into jeopardy.

“This fight means a lot to me and is very important for my career,” said Ajose. “I want my name to be amongst the elite of the 140lb. division.”

“This fight means a lot. I just came off two recent losses that I thought I won-especially the one in Ukraine,” said Lundy. “I really beat that guy [Viktor Postol], but I didn’t get a fair shake. For this fight, I’m going to go in there and show the world that this isn’t the last of Hammerin’ Hank. I’m a force at 140 now.”

Lundy continued, “I’m looking to prove that Hammerin’ Hank is one of the elite fighters in the world. Everyone knows [Olusegun] from taking a beating against Matthysse. I’ve already been in the top 10 in the world and this will be the second time once I beat this guy. I’m a world-class fighter and a soon-to-be world-class champion. I’m going in there to give it my all.”

In his only defeat as a professional, Ajose was stopped in a high intensity shootout with interim WBC light welterweight champion, and one of boxing’s pound-for-pound most devastating punchers, Lucas Matthysse. Ajose and Matthysse went to war from the opening bell before Ajose was finally stopped in the 10th round of their 12-round championship battle. The bout was viewed as one of the most exciting of 2012, and while Ajose came up on the losing end, his stock certainly rose. Now, Ajose knows a win over the proven Lundy will put himself back in line for another crack at the coveted world championship.

“I know that Lundy is a good and skillful boxer and he is very tough. He always comes to fight and I do not expect an easy fight. That being said though, I know that I will come out victorious on Friday night. If I need to go to war to win this fight then I will do just that. If I need to box, then I can do that too. Whatever I have to do to win this fight I will do. I want to prove to everyone that I am a better fighter than what people saw against Matthysse.”

While Ajose is confident going into this matchup and dreams of bigger and better things to come in his career, he is certainly not making the mistake of looking past his foe.

“I have my eyes set on Lundy right now and no one else. If I want to move forward in my career, I must win on Friday night. After Friday, I will talk about what is next for me, but without a win, there is no next and that is why I am taking this fight so seriously.”
Lundy echoed similar sentiments regarding the importance of this fight, but he did admit to having one particular fighter in his sites.

“It’s a do-or-die fight and I’m letting everything hang out on Friday. I’m going to come in there and put on a show and get a win against a guy ranked [No. 3] in the WBC. It’ll be real big to come in there and handle business. That puts me in the No. 2 or No. 3 spot and gives me a chance to fight for a title.

“I’ll give props where props are due. I respect Danny Garcia. We’re both Philadelphia guys, but if I win, I want Matthysse. Everyone is running from the big bad wolf. Hammerin’ Hank won’t run from no one. Let’s fight. Then I’ll go from there and fight the champ.”

The entire card is promoted by DiBella Entertainment, in association with Gary Shaw Productions, Classic Entertainment & Sports, and Rumble Time Promotions, and sponsored by Corona. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. ET, with the first bout scheduled for 8 p.m. ET. The televised portion of the card will be aired at 10:30 p.m. ET, on ESPN2, ESPN Deportes and WatchESPN. In the televised co-feature bout, undefeated up-and-coming prospects Ryan “The Polish Prince” Kielczweski (16-0, 3KO’s) and Miguel “Mikito” Soto (11-0, 11KO’s) put their unblemished records on the line in an eight-round super featherweight clash.

Tickets, priced at $75 VIP reserved, $45 reserved and $35 for general admission, are currently on sale, and can be purchased by calling 603-898-2311.

UNBEATENS MICKEY BEY & BADOU JACK FACE TOUGHEST TESTS THIS FRIDAY, JULY 19 ON SHOBOX: THE NEW GENERATION FROM HARD ROCK HOTEL & CASINO IN LAS VEGAS

NEW YORK (July 16, 2013) — Two of Mayweather Promotions’ most talented boxers, lightweight Mickey “The Spirit” Bey Jr. and world-rated super middleweight Badou Jack, will try to keep their unbeaten records intact when they face John “The Gladiator” Molina Jr. and Farah “Quiet Storm’’ Ennis, respectively, in co-featured fights on ShoBox: The New Generation live on SHOWTIME® this Friday, July 19 (10 p.m. ET/PT, delayed on the West Coast) from The Joint At Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas.

Bey, a former amateur standout from Las Vegas by way of Cleveland, is 18-0-1 with 9 KO’s. Molina (25-3, 20 KO’s) is a former world title challenger from Covina, Calif. Sweden’s Jack, a 2008 Olympian for Gambia who also resides in Las Vegas, is 14-0 with 10 KO’s. Philadelphia born-and-raised Ennis (21-2, 12 KO’s) is a former NABF champion who’s won four in a row. Both bouts are scheduled for 10 rounds.

Tickets for the event, which is presented by Mayweather Promotions and sponsored by Corona, are priced at $125, $100, $75, $50 and $25, plus applicable taxes, fees and service charges, and are on sale at Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Box Office, all Ticketmaster locations, online at www.ticketmaster.com or by phone at (800) 745-3000. Doors open at 5:25 p.m. PT on fight night and the first fight begins at 5:30 p.m.

Typical of ShoBox, both Bey and Jack will be facing their toughest foes to date.

“I think in the case of Mickey Bey, he’s a little bit different than other prospects featured on ShoBox and the reason for that is that he was a legitimate and heavily hyped prospect when we first had him on six years ago,” noted ShoBox expert analyst and boxing historian, Steve Farhood. “But his career has stalled because of injuries and promotional issues. One thing that hasn’t changed since 2007 is that even at the age of 30, Bey still has the profile of a top prospect. He’s taking a big step up in class against power-puncher John Molina.

“Badou Jack has been looking better and better and showing good boxing skills to go along with his signature body-punching style and he too is stepping up against a veteran, yet still a prospect himself, in Farah Ennis. It’ll be interesting to see whether Jack can break down Ennis over 10 rounds.”

The 5-foot-9 Bey was a sensational amateur, a four-time national champion and a member of the 2004 U.S. Olympic team. He was unable to complete in the Olympic Qualifiers or Olympic Games, however, after he became ill with pneumonia after winning the Olympic Box-Offs.

Expectations were extremely high when Bey turned pro in April 2005, but his career has sputtered. Now, under the Mayweather Promotions banner, the eight-year pro seems primed for his best. A terrific boxer-puncher, he was sharp and dominant in his debut as a member of The Money Team last Feb. 2, winning his first fight in 15 months by impressive third-round knockout over Robert Rodriguez in Las Vegas.

However, the fight was later ruled a no-contest because Bey tested positive for elevated testosterone levels. It was a bitter setback for Bey, who maintains his innocence. While it is easy to look back, Bey has moved on and his focus is now totally on Molina. A convincing victory, he knows, will get him on track to the top.

“I should have been champion many years ago,” said Bey, who’s been reunited with his original trainer, Floyd Mayweather Sr. “When I’m on point, there isn’t anybody who can hang in there with me. It’s just a relief to be signed with Mayweather Promotions, who’s got my best interest in mind on every level. You’re going to see better performances out of me just because of that.

“I think John Molina is a good fighter, tough and strong. He’s got a lot of punching power and he’s got a lot of knockouts. I think he’s a real solid opponent. He’s not the best technically, skill-wise, but he’s got experience and a lot of power. That’s always dangerous, although I’ve got a great defense. People fought him thinking they would beat him and left with a KO on their record. That’s one thing I’m aware of.

“I think it’s a great matchup. We went through a lot of tough opponents who wouldn’t take the fight, so I’m just glad he took it.”

For all his natural talent, Bey knows that dedication and work ethic are major keys to getting to where he wants to be. “I’m always in the gym. I work out all year round, even if it’s not actually boxing,” he said. “I don’t really do too much but train. Ninety percent of the time, everything I do involves some kind of working out. I’m a fitness freak and an all-around athlete. I’ve been preparing for this fight for (almost two months).”

The older brother of pro fighter Cortez Bey, Mickey Bey possesses good skills, speed, and movement. The sharp, accurate puncher will be making his third appearance on ShoBox and first since February 2008. He says he doesn’t study a lot of tape on upcoming opponents, but likes to watch videos of old fighters.

“I’m always watching tapes of guys like Ray Robinson,” he said. “I like Sugar Ray Leonard, Salvador Sanchez, Muhammad Ali, Jersey Joe Walcott and Willie Pep. I get a lot of different things from different fighters just by watching a lot. Tommy Hearns, too.

“It has a whole lot of influence on my style because I see a lot of things that they did back then that fighters don’t do today. I think that boxing is a lost art now, where a lot of fighters really don’t study the game. They can’t even name a lot of old fighters.

“I feel that if this is the sport that you’re in, then you should know a lot about the history of boxing. I think Ray Robinson has influenced my style more than the others because I stay glued to him. I’ve been watching him since even before I started boxing. I watched his tapes for months straight every day and I still do. I’ll watch his tapes at least eight days a month because I’ve got his whole DVD collection.”

Molina will be making his fourth start on ShoBox. The 5-foot-10 ½-inch, 30-year-old turned pro in March 2006 and won his first 18 fights before losing a 10-round decision to Martin Honorio in his last appearance on ShoBox on Nov. 28, 2009. He’s gone 7-2 since and registered a couple of impressive victories (TKO 11 over Hank Lundy in July 2010 and KO 4 over Dannie Williams on Jan. 11, 2013).

The aggressive-minded, hard-punching Molina has registered 15 victories inside three rounds, but he’s lost two out of his last three, including an upset, majority 10-round decision defeat to Andrey Klimov in his last outing this past June 7. Molina’s other defeat came in a world title fight, a 44-second, first-round KO loss to then-WBC Lightweight World Champion Antonio DeMarco on Sept. 8, 2012.

“Molina was really disappointed after his last fight,” said matchmaker Tom Brown of Molina’s promoter Goossen Tutor Promotions. “He said he was going right back to the gym the following Monday, which he did. Right after the loss, he decided to go back to trainer Joe Goossen. John kept asking us to please find him something immediately. He wanted to get right back in there and try to get a victory.

“His back’s up against the wall. He knows he needs a victory. This is a tough, dangerous fight, but it’s what John asked for – to put him into something meaningful. Now he’s got to do his job.”

Jack trains at the Mayweather Boxing Club under the watchful eye of former WBA world light heavyweight champion Eddie Mustafa Muhammad. He’s steadily ascended the 168-pound world ratings in the last year-and-a-half and is currently rated No. 6 by the WBA and No. 13 by the WBC. This will be his second ShoBox start and third on the network. He is coming off of a dominant third-round knockout win over Michael Gbenga on the Floyd Mayweather vs. Robert Guerrero undercard last May 4 in a preliminary fight that was featured on SHOWTIME from the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Vegas.

On May 11, 2012, Jack won his ShoBox debut with an eight-round split decision over previously undefeated Alexander Brand (17-0). In his bout after Brand, Jack flattened Jonuel Tapia in the first round on Feb. 2, 2013 and followed that with an eight-round unanimous decision over Don Mouton on Feb. 22. Next, he overpowered Gbenga.

“I always expect a tough fight,” he said. “I don’t know much about Ennis, but I saw about one minute of a fight of his. He seems to be a good boxer. It’s going to be a good fight. I’m not worried about his style. I had 150 amateur fights so I’ve seen a lot of different styles. I can adapt to anything.”

Jack became a member of Mayweather Promotions stable in late 2012. “I went back home to Sweden a month after the Brand fight and I stayed there for six months,” he said. “I had some management problems, but Floyd helped me out. That’s when I signed with Mayweather Promotions. He basically saved my career. I came back in December 2012.”

The 6-foot-1, 29-year-old Jack was a European amateur standout, compiling an outstanding record of 122-28. He represented his father’s country, Gambia, in the Olympics and is the only boxer ever to represent Gambia in any Olympic Games. He turned pro in June 2009, fought his first five fights in Sweden and Finland, but has fought exclusively in the United States since.

Ennis is a 6-foot-tall, 30-year-old who’ll be making his ShoBox debut. In his last fight, and his first in 11 months, he scored a knockdown in the final round to secure a close, 10-round unanimous decision win over former world-rated contender Anthony Hanshaw (96-93 twice and 95-94) on June 7 in Shelton, Wash.

A natural counter-puncher who is proven at the 10-round distance, Ennis has a strong boxing background. His brother Derek fights professionally and his father/trainer Bozie, was also a fighter. Farah feels he will benefit from the quick turnaround between bouts. “I took a week off and got right back in the gym after my last fight,” he said. “I think I got the call (right after that). I want to stay busy. I don’t want any long layoffs like before. That probably had a little effect on my performance.”

Ennis only had a handful of amateur fights, and he hasn’t exactly been highly hyped in a pro career that began when he was 23. He’ll be the underdog in this one, but don’t look for the boxer-puncher with good skills and movement to be in awe of the surroundings or his opponent.

“I’m training hard,” said Ennis, whose lone defeat in a seven-year pro career came on a 10-round majority decision loss to southpaw Alexander Johnson on April 2, 2011. “I’m patient in the ring, but if I hurt you I’m going to get you out of there. I’m ready to go.”

Mauro Ranallo will call the ShoBox action from ringside with Farhood and former World Champion Raul Marquez serving as expert analysts. The executive producer is Gordon Hall with Richard Gaughan producing and Rick Phillips directing.

Rocktagon Worldwide Brings National Attention to Texas with All-Pro MMA Card

Las Vegas – July 15, 2013 The MMA boom is underway as Rocktagon Worldwide brings its national tour to the Lone Star State on July 26 with Rocktagon 28 “Journey of Champions –El Paso.”

Fans craving consistent, high-quality MMA events featuring professional fighters from all over the globe should be intrigued by Rocktagon’s Texas debut.

Rocktagon 28 could soon be looked back on as the event that helped reignite the MMA scene in the El Paso area.

A featured bout between submission aces Billy “The Puerto Rican Assassin” Colon and Martin Sano Jr. will serve as the headliner for this blockbuster fight card. The clichéd mantra, “don’t blink,” is certainly relevant considering both fighters have a 100-percent finish rate.

Colon, who has competed all over the United States, hopes a significant edge in experience leads him to the Promised Land against Sano, a highly-touted prospect with an unblemished record.

At only 22-years-old, Sano exudes the kind of confidence one expects in a future champion, but it’ll be interesting to see how he performs on the big stage in front of a savvy veteran like Colon. This will also be his first venture from welterweight to middleweight. With a lighter weight cut, all signs are pointing to fans seeing the best Sano yet.

In the co-main event, fireworks can be expected on the feet when heavy-handed slugger Patrick “Skar” Dixon meets Fort Bliss Combatives team member Anthony Stevens.

While some fighters rely on point scoring, Dixon tends to take the road less traveled, which typically consists of throwing haymakers and leaving opponents curled up in the fetal position.

Stevens, on the other hand, is more of a tactician. He always pushes forward, but his smooth boxing style tends to negate wild, standup exchanges.

Dixon isn’t the type of fighter to linger around outside the pocket. The deciding factor in this bout will be Stevens’ ability to maintain separation and overcome Dixon’s berserker-like fighting style. These two contrasting styles should certainly make for an entertaining fight.

From top to bottom, Rocktagon 28 will be jam-packed with great professional bouts. The full fight card, which is subject to change, is listed below:

Main Event
Billy Colon (6-4) vs. Martin Sano Jr. (2-0)

Co-Main Event
Patrick Dixon (4-5-1) vs. Anthony Stevens (3-1-1)

Rodrigo Sotello Jr. vs. Joseph Torrez
Alida Gray vs. Jessica Kennett
Jazmin Quezada vs. Stacey Sigala
David Ruelaz vs. Adam McGurk
Brian Castillo vs. Matthew Hunt
Julio Hinojosa vs. Ibrahim “Lion Heart” Eid
Jesus Urbina vs. Alan Lerma
Ryan McCarty vs. Derek Perkins

Rocktagon 28 “Journey of Champions” will be live on July 26 at Buchanan’s Event Center, located at 11540 Pellicano Dr. in El Paso, Texas. Tickets starting at $30 are available online at www.RocktagonWorldwide.com. Limited VIP tables are also available by calling 440-934-4MMA.

WORLD SERIES OF FIGHTING PRESIDENT RAY SEFO TAKES TEMPORARY LEAVE TO CONCENTRATE ON UPCOMING FIGHT

LAS VEGAS, NEVADA (July 16, 2013) – With a return to active competition on the horizon, World Series of Fighting President Ray Sefo has officially elected to take a temporary leave from his executive role.

“I’m looking forward to another chance to step into the cage, but before I do, I felt taking a temporary leave from my executive duties was the right thing to do,” Sefo said. “I’m fortunate to have an outstanding team at World Series of Fighting which I know will handle our operations while I’m gone. And after my fight, I’ll step back into my role as World Series of Fighting President.”
Sefo returns to the cage on Aug. 10, where he meets Dave Huckaba (20-5) of Sacramento, Calif., on the NBC Sports Network-televised main card of World Series of Fighting 4, which takes place at Citizens Business Bank Arena in Ontario, Calif.
Sefo, an 18-year veteran of combat sports, is best-known as a six-time Muay Thai world champion and eight-time K-1 World Grand Prix participant. However, he’s also a longtime trainer at the famed Xtreme Couture gym in Las Vegas and has previously competed three times under mixed martial arts rules.
In fact, between his kickboxing, boxing and MMA experience, Sefo boasts 99 total combat-sports appearances. His most recent outing was a March 2012 kickboxing bout against respected veteran Mirko “Cro Cop” Filipovic, and Sefo has since maintained hope that he would have a chance to compete just one more time.
“Even though I took on an executive role at World Series of Fighting, I never actually retired from active competition,” Sefo said. “About three years ago, I set a personal goal of reaching the century mark, 100 fights, and then calling it quits. Now I’m excited to say I have a chance to do that.
“But I knew I couldn’t be the president of World Series of Fighting and fight for the company at the same time. To try and do so would have been a disservice to all of our fighters and my team at WSOF, not to mention me as an athlete and to all of the fans who will be watching me in action again. I’m fortunate to work with an outstanding group at World Series of Fighting, and I have total confidence their work will allow the success we’ve enjoyed so far to continue on Aug. 10.”
Tickets for World Series of Fighting 4, which start at just $29, are currently on sale at all Ticketmaster outlets.
Doors at Citizens Business Bank Arena open at 4 p.m. PT local time (7 p.m. ET), and the first preliminary card bout will begin at 5 p.m. PT local time (8 p.m. ET).
The live, two-and-a-half-hour NBC Sports Network telecast of the World Series of Fighting 4 main card begins at 7:30 p.m. PT local time (10:30 p.m. ET). The night’s preliminary bouts stream live on World Series of Fighting’s official website, WSOF.com.

The twenty-three year old won the Pennsylvania State title with a thrilling ten round unanimous decision over Victor Vasquez. Since that fight, Nelson has a unanimous decision over Osnel Charles and his last bout, Nelson scored a eight round unanimous decision over veteran Georgi Kevlishvilli on March 15th at the Valley Forge Casino Resort.

The 29 year-old turned pro in 2006 and has faced all of the top Lightweights in the area.

He owns a 7th round stoppage over Vasquez; a six round unanimous decision over Jesus Barbosa.

Belasco is on a four fight winning streak which includes his most recent outing where he scored a six round split decision over Bryne Green on February 8th which avenged an earlier split decision defeat to Greene.

Willie Nelson continues on-the-job advanced education In ring to prepare for future world title shot

ST. LOUIS (July 15, 2013) – World Boxing Council (WBC) No. 3-rated Willie “The Great” Nelson (21-1-1, 12 KOs) continued his advanced education in boxing on June 29, learning invaluable lessons in his HBO® debut fight against battle-tested Argentinian veteran Luciano Leonel “El Principito” Cuello (32-3, 16 KOs), whose only two previous losses as a professional were to world champions Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (TKO7) and Julio Cesar Chavez, Jr. (DEC10).

The 26-year-old Nelson, fighting out of Cleveland, strayed too often from his game plan, struggling for parts of three challenging rounds. He regrouped to earn a hard-fought victory by unanimous 10-round decision (97-93, 97-93, 96-94), successfully defending his North American Boxing Federation (NABF) 154-pound title, at MGM Grand Theater at Foxwoods® Resort Casino in Mashantucket, Connecticut.

Despite not having his “A” game, like an ace baseball pitcher who wins without his best stuff, Nelson won a tough fight against an underrated opponent, overcoming adversity along the way like the world-class prizefighter he has become.

“I tried to knock him out early to look better than Alvarez had,” Nelson admitted, “and that’s all on me. I took him too lightly and he really came to fight. I tried to outclass him, take him out in the first few rounds; now, I know that I can punch but I can’t knockout everybody. I should have stuck to the game plan and used a double jab and then come back with a right. I was supposed to spin him so I wouldn’t get caught by his left hook, but I didn’t do what I worked on in the gym. I’ll learn from this fight.”

The 6′ 3 ½” Nelson, whose 81″ reach is freakish for a light middleweight, stayed too often in the pocket and essentially gave up his tremendous size advantage in an effort to put Cuello (listed at 5′ 9 ½”) to sleep early, as he did in his previous fight to Michael Medina (KO1). Never-the-less, he still defeated the WBC No. 13-rated challenger, who gave Chavez all that he could handle and more in their controversial 2009 fight, in which Chavez won a questionable 10-round decision (97-93, 96-95, 96-94) at home in Mexico.

“I watched more videotape of Cuello than just his Alvarez and Chavez fights,” said Jack Loew, who trains Nelson in Youngstown, Ohio. “I knew Cuello could fight and we were in for a tough fight. We know that Willie can do better but it was a great learning experience for him. I know it’ll make him an even better fighter. Don’t forget, it wasn’t perfect, but Willie won the fight fair and square on HBO. We didn’t take a step backwards, not by any means, and he’s ready right now to fight any of the top names in the light middleweight division. There’s no doubt in my mind that Willie will be world champion.

“I thought he dominated when he did what he was supposed to do – use a double jab and come back with the right. His second jab landed all night long but he wanted to bang-out his opponent early. When Willie didn’t throw his double jab, throwing only one jab at a time, Cuello blocked it and then snuck inside. Willie has so much talent; he can box and punch. He just can’t go looking for a knockout like he did. He needs to learn how to adjust better during a fight and listen to his corner. This is like fine-tuning a car. Everything is there and all we need to do is put it all together.”

Because most of the top light middleweights are committed to fights during the next few months, rather than wait for a major fight opportunity, Nelson will headline a local show, presented by Rumble Time Promotions and DiBella Entertainment, September 28 close to his adopted second-home of Youngstown at Packard Music Arena (tickets: 314.662.2000) in Warren, Ohio.

“The top guys aren’t available and we’re not waiting for Willie to fight again,” explained Rumble Time Promotions president Steve Smith, who co-promotes Nelson with Lou DiBella. “We’re going to keep him busy so he can continue to improve his skills. We tried to get (WBC #1 rated Sergey) Rabchenko for this fight (June 29) on HBO but they turned it down.

“Willie was a little too overconfident and put too much pressure on himself to knockout Cuello quicker than Alvarez had in six rounds. That’s why Willie came out so fast. He’s young and could have made things a lot easier, if he had just fought his fight. He’s a big puncher whose strong boxing skills enabled him to win a lot of amateur titles.”

Cuello was a relatively unknown, at least in the United States, but the Argentinian proved to be a rugged, albeit awkward opponent who is cut from the same mold as his countrymen, contemporary stars such as Sergio Martinez, Lucas Matthysee and Marcos Maidana.

Nelson was cut for the first time in his pro career, in fact, he suffered lacerations over both eyes (in the 3rd and 10th rounds), but he was fortunate to have one of the world’s premier cut-men working his corner, Danny Milano, who kept the bleeding under control. Nelson displayed the heart and determination of a true champion down the stretch to win convincingly in his first HBO fight.

“American fans didn’t know how good Cuello is because he had never fought on U.S. television before,” Smith added. “His close loss to Chavez was in Mexico to the son of a Mexican legend. Willie solidified his position among the top-ranked light middleweight contenders in the world like (Miguel) Cotto, (Erislandy) Lara, (Alfredo) Angulo, (James) Kirkland, and (Vanes) Matirosyan.”

Patrick Nielsen to face Patrick Majewski on September 7 in Frederikshavn

WBA Intercontinental Middleweight Champion Patrick Nielsen (19-0, 9 KOs) faces the toughest test of his career so far when he takes on Patrick ‘The Machine’ Majewski (21-1, 13 KOs) at the Nordic Fight Night in Frederikshavn on September 7.

Nielsen’s latest opponent is relishing the opportunity to face the 22 year-old southpaw. ”This is a fight I was more than happy to accept,” said Majewski. ”I can’t wait to come to Denmark and fight for his title. I am already ranked well with the WBC and WBO and this is an opportunity for me to move up the WBA rankings. I believe it will be a competitive fight but I am confident that when the final bell rings I will be taking the belt home with me.”

Nielsen shares his opponent’s confidence. ”This will be a tough test but one I am more than ready for,” said the fighter from Albertslund. ”I will come prepared as always and fight with my heart. After the Andino fight my confidence is high and I know I have what it takes to take this guy out.”

Said promoter Nisse Sauerland: ”This is the toughest test to date for Patrick. Majewski is a highly ranked, world-class boxer. I have seen his fights and can see why he is called ‘The Machine’ – he just keeps coming! However I believe that Patrick will be ready and come September 7, he will announce himself even further on to the world stage.”

Tickets for the Nordic Fight Night at the Arena Nord in Frederikshavn are available at www.arenanord.dk. Co-headlining the show is Cecilia Braekhus (22-0, 6 KOs) who puts her WBA, WBC & WBO Female Welterweight titles on the line against the unbeaten Oxandia Castillo (12-0, 9 KOs). A full undercard will be announced shortly.

ASHLEY THEOPAHNE: INDEPENDENCE DAY

I’ve been back in Las Vegas for just over a month now after my two week stint in New York City, sparring with former world champion Luis Collazo.

Being around Ishe Smith, IBF 154lb world champion is motivational, as well as inspiring. He is an athlete who has been through the highs and lows of the sport. He then achieved the ultimate goal as a fighter, when he won the world title in February after 13 years as a professional.
He was due to defend it on July 19th, only to get injured during a sparring incident that I witnessed first-hand. It is only a minor setback for someone who has been through so much, but he is still champion and a new date will be arranged in due course
Our careers have been quite similar, and being at such close quarters, watching Ishe train and spending time with him as a friend, pushes me that little bit more to accomplish my own goals.
Badou Jack and Mickey Bey will headline the boxing show on July 19th now. I’ve been involved with some intense sparring sessions with Mickey over the last few weeks. He knows that sparring with me is harder than fighting John Molina in the main event. He will win and then the next stop will be the world title.
Floyd Mayweather is back in Las Vegas after his promotional tour with his opponent, Saul “Canelo” Alvarez across America and Mexico. Their combined record is 86 wins and 0 losses. This will be a massive fight. Boxing fans across the world wanted Floyd to fight Canelo and he has given them their wish.
I’m a big tennis fan and watching Wimbledon whilst in Las Vegas has beentotally different, as I’m normally in London when it is on. Andy Murray is a major boxing fan, he has said many times that he treats his tennis matches like boxing fights. He has come very farwithout losing what he stands for and his ‘common touch’. He has stepped out of the shadow of Tim Henman, and hasbecome one of the best tennis players inthe world; he has won the US Open, last year’s Olympics and now Wimbledon. His rise to fame is a perfect example of Floyd Mayweather’s ‘hard work and dedication’motto. He is a shoe in to win the BBC’sSports Personality of the Year in December.
This week was a big celebration in America. July 4th, which is known as Independence Day, is a huge occasion as it marks the day America gained Independence from the British.
It’s a day for friends and family to gettogether to celebrate with food, fireworksand an authentic celebration of America’s history. It was the first time in eight yearsof coming here that I have been privileged to celebrate with my American friends
We had a real fun day. It started very early at 5 am when we went to Mount Charleston for our run up the mountain. Mayweather Promotion fighters, Badou Jack, JLeon Love, Luis Arias and a few others from the Mayweather Boxing Club were the dedicated fighters that took on this challenging task. I’m currently the king of the mountain, and undefeated week in week out, just like Floyd Mayweather.
As always, we went to Baby Stacks Cafe to restore our energy levels, and fill up on protein and carbohydrates. Former world champion and trainer to champions, Eddie Mustafa Muhammad says I eat like “it’s my last meal and I’m headed to the electric chair”. Being a qualified dieticianand nutritionist I know the importance of eating the right foods at the right time.
In the tough and unforgiving industry that I have chosen to make my career, it is so rare to make real friends, let alone have this unique feeling of belonging to something so special.
The day was ended as it started, with my team mates. We are more than a team, more than friends, more like a family.
