THE ONE: MAYWEATHER VS. CANELO PRESS TOUR STOP IN MEXICO CITY DRAWS OVER 30,000 FANS

Floyd_Mayweather
MEXICO CITY (June 30, 2013) – “THE ONE: Mayweather vs. Canelo” press tour continued on a beautiful summer Sunday in Mexico’s capital city where local police estimated that 32,000 excitable fans turned out at Monumento de los Niños Heroes to greet pound-for-pound boxing king Floyd Mayweather and national hero Canelo Alvarez.

Mexican television network Televisa covered the proceedings, which, like the previous six stops on this unprecedented press tour, was part press conference and part fan rally.

A complete replay of Televisa’s presentation is available for viewing at http://www.ustream.tv/recorded/35179179

Quotes from Mayweather and Canelo on Sunday in Mexico City:

Floyd “Money” Mayweather, Eight-Time and Five Division World Champion

“It’s great to be in Mexico. The turnout here and all throughout this tour has been amazing. Canelo has a lot of fans here in Mexico. We expected that, but I don’t fight for one country. I fight for the whole world.

“I have faced a lot of great champions in my career and I can honestly say that my toughest opponents have been Mexican.

“One thing I know is that Mexicans know boxing.

“I got into this sport to be the best and I’m pretty sure Canelo got into the sport to be the best, but the difference is that I was born to win and I will die to win.

I don’t know how this fight is going to play out. That’s what makes this match-up so interesting. We’ll all find out on September 14.

“I’m the pound-for-pound best. I’m ‘The One,’ and on September 14, you’ll see.

“I commend Canelo. He’s a young, strong champion. I congratulate his team, but when you face Floyd Mayweather you face the best.

“Right now I just can’t be beat. Maybe in 20 years he’ll be the king, but not right now. September 14 is just another day for me.”

Canelo Alvarez, Super Welterweight World Champion

“I want to thank everyone for coming out here…all of you. I’ve always said that we had to come to Mexico (on this tour). There’s no other place like Mexico. I’m so happy.

“There are a lot of people who don’t think I’m going to win, but on September 14, you’ll see that I will win.

“I’ve always wanted to be the best in the sport and I’m on my way. I couldn’t let this opportunity go by and I will take advantage of it on September 14.

“I’m always training. I never stop. To win we have to prepare well and not ignore the little things.

“I feel the size of this event. I feel the emotion, but I am calm and on September 14, I’ll be okay.

“I began fighting when I was 15 years old and at that time I wasn’t ready to fight him. Now I’m ready. I always go in with a winning mentality. I’ll prepare to win.”

Fight Week in Tacoma; NW Featherweights Headline CageSport XXV

Tacoma, WA (July 2, 2013) – Professional mixed martial artists are once again traveling to the entertainment capital of the Northwest for Halquist Productions’ professional MMA series, CageSport. CageSport XXV, set for Saturday, July 6th at the Emerald Queen Casino will feature the Northwest’s premier featherweights as Tacoma’s Drew Brokenshire (6-1) will attempt to defend his title for the second time when he takes on Oregon’s Shorty Weikel (9-3) in the main event. In the Semi-Main Event, Yakima’s Julian Erosa (10-1) will battle it out against Okanogan’s Lee Morrison (8-3) in a title eliminator match.

Tickets for CageSport XXV are still available and can be purchased at the Emerald Queen Casino’s box office and at any Ticketmaster outlet. Prices are: $35, $55, and $100.

Crowd favorite, Drew Brokenshire, has quickly caught the attention of Northwest fight fans after a lengthy amateur career where he accumulated a record of (17-5) and solidified his status as the most decorated amateur in the Northwest. Now as a professional, training primarily with West Coast Fight Team and Ludus FC, he has worked his record up to 6-1 along with capturing the CageSport featherweight title, making him one of the most intriguing prospects in the region. A second title defense against Weikel will give Brokenshire an even bigger push into national talks.

The semi-main event has turned out to be the most anticipated match of the night as fans have long awaited the day that Lee Morrison steps into the cage with Julian Erosa. Adding more intrigue to the bout is that it has been formed into a featherweight title eliminator fight, meaning that the winner of this fight will get the opportunity to take on the winner of the Brokenshire/Weikel fight in August for the CageSport Featherweight title.

“We’re very excited to have the four best featherweights in the Northwest finally stepping into the cage at the same time in a tournament format,” said promoter, Brian Halquist. “The winner of the two headliners will be back on August 24th, which was just added to the schedule to put to rest who the true featherweight champion really is.”

The undercard features a stacked lineup full of some of the Northwest’s best mixed martial artists including a premier middleweight bout between Josh Hewson and Alfonso Gonzales that could push the winner into talks for an opportunity to fight for CageSport’s middleweight title, currently held by AMC Pankration’s, Brent Knopp.

Josh Hewson (3-0) vs. Alfonso Gonzales (2-0)
Elisha Helsper (0-3) vs. Hadley Griffith (debut)
Jacob Solis (3-1) vs. Gary Winslow (0-1)
Arjay Murphy (1-3-1) vs. Josh Wright (2-0)
Trent Tyler (debut) vs. Zach Conn (debut)
Gustavo Lopez (1-0) vs. Dylan Atkinson (1-0)
Zach Skinner (7-8) vs. Josh Rettinghouse (7-2)

Doors for CageSport XXV are set to open at 6 PM, with the first fight scheduled for 7 PM.For more information about CageSport XXV and all other Halquist Production events, please visit www.halquistproductions.com and the official Facebook and Twitter pages of Halquist Productions, CageSport, and Battle at the Boat.

“THE ONE: MAYWEATHER VS. CANELO” MEDIA TOUR HITS HOUSTON AND SAN ANTONIO

Floyd_Mayweather
DEEP IN THE HEART OF TEXAS (July 1, 2013) – Fans remained the biggest winners as “THE ONE: MAYWEATHER VS. CANELO” press tour continued Monday with two stops in Texas.

In Houston, a couple hundred fans began lining up at 3:00 a.m. for a press conference that started at 1:00 p.m. By the time the press conference officially commenced at Union Station At Minute Maid Park, home of the Houston Astros, an overflow crowd of over 1,000 fans had filled the stadium’s grand lobby to beyond capacity.

The nine-day, 10-city tour continued Monday night at The Alamo in San Antonio. The press conference didn’t start until 6:00 p.m., but fans were in line by 7:00 a.m. Due to a flight delay, Mayweather was an hour and forty-five minutes late and by the time he arrived, Canelo had come and gone.

However, Mayweather provided a little glimpse into his future, saying he may fight more than the five more times after which he has previously said he would retire.

“After my five more fights, guess what? I think after 49-0 we may stay in this sport a little longer,” he said. “This September 14, it’s just another walk in the park.”

As he has throughout the tour, Mayweather thanked the fans. “There is no city like San Antonio,” he told the approximately 5,000 in attendance. “You fans have been brilliant over the years. Without San Antonio, Floyd Mayweather wouldn’t be where he’s at today. If you don’t know, Mayweather loves Mexico. Mexican and Latino fans, you know boxing.

“I’m going to sign a lot of autographs and take a lot of pictures because I’m late. That’s the least I can do for you guys.”

Canelo was his usual classy self at the podium, but he took a couple jabs at Mayweather for being tardy.

“Thank you everybody for being here. It’s a great honor for me to be here for a second time. Last time I was treated like I was at home and that’s what I feel like again – like I’m at home.”

“I know many of you have been here since seven in the morning. At six o’clock the press conference was supposed to start, and that’s why I’m here at six o’clock – because I respect you, because you guys respect boxing. There are Mayweather fans here who also have been here since very early. I’m here for them too.”

“He (Mayweather) thinks all the boxers have to respect him and he intimidates everybody, but he doesn’t intimidate me. I look forward to the fight.’’

“THE ONE: MAYWEATHER VS. Abraham returns to the ring – takes on Shihepo in Schwerin, Germany

arthur_abraham
Arthur Abraham (36-4, 28 KOs) begins his quest back to the top. Three months ago, the 33-year-old surprisingly lost his WBO Super-Middleweight Title to Robert Stieglitz. Now the prodigy of Coach Ulli Wegner returns on August 24. The former champion will fight it out for the vacant WBO Intercontinental Title against Willbeforce Shihepo (20-6, 15 KO´s) at the Sport- und Kongresshalle Schwerin.

“Obviously I felt pretty low after losing the world championship. In the end, an injury to the left eye led to the loss. I have never experienced anything like that before. But now all I do is look ahead,” said Abraham, who is currently ranked as the number four rated contender by the WBO. The super-middleweight added: “I am excited about my fight in Schwerin. By beating Shihepo, I want to become the WBO´s mandatory challenger and fight for the championship once again.”

The fans in Schwerin also have a fight between local hero Juergen Braehmer (40-2, 31 KOs) and Stefano Abatangelo (17-2-1, 6 KOs) to look forward to.

The current European Light Heavyweight Champion from Germany is aiming to defend his EBU Title for the second time.

KENNEDY RETURNS AUG. 24 AGAINST JOSELITO COLLADO AT BALLY’S ATLANTIC CITY

Atlantic City, NJ—Former super bantamweight world-title challenger Teon Kennedy, of Philadelphia, PA, now campaigning as a junior lightweight, makes his second start in three months when he boxes Joselito Collado, of Jamaica, Queens, NY, in the scheduled 10-round main event on Saturday evening, Aug. 24, in the Grand Ballroom at Bally’s Atlantic City.

The Kennedy-Collado contest tops a seven-fight card which will be streamed live on the internet by www.gofightlive.tv. First fight is 7.30 p.m.

Kennedy (left), 26, ended a one-year layoff June 1 at Bally’s when he scored a unanimous 10-round decision over Carlos Vinan, of Newark, NJ.

The Vinan fight was Kennedy’s first since June 9, 2012, when he was stopped in five rounds by Cuban Guillermo Rigondeaux for the latter’s WBA super bantamweight world title at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, NV.

Kennedy had been struggling with the 122-pound super bantamweight limit for months and decided to skip the featherweight division (126 pounds) and fight as a junior lightweight (130).

A pro since 2007, Kennedy has a 18-7-2 record with seven knockouts.
clip_image005 Kennedy won the vacant USBA super bantamweight title in 2009 when he stopped Francisco Rodriguez, of Chicago, in 10 rounds at the legendary Blue Horizon in Philadelphia. He added the vacant NABA 122-pound belt in 2010, knocking out Alex Becerra, of Mexico, also in 10 rounds, at Bally’s Atlantic City.

His biggest win came in 2011 when he scored a pair of knockdowns and a 12-round decision over previously unbeaten Jorge Diaz, of New Brunswick, NJ, at Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City.

Collado (right), 30, is originally from the Dominican Republic, where he turned pro late in 2006. He was idle in 2007, then moved his base of operations to New York in 2008 and has compiled an overall record of 13-2, 3 K0s.

The only men to beat Collado, by decision, were Casey Ramos, of Austin, TX, who was 14-0 at the time, and Jerry Belmontes, of Corpus Christi, TX, who was 16-0. Collado had Ramos down in the third round of their fight in 2011.

Collado has beaten Rafael Lora, of Irvington, NJ, and Andres Ledesma, of Miami, FL.

Junior middleweight prospect DeCarlo Perez, of Atlantic City, NJ, goes against Jamar Freeman, of Wilson, NC, in the scheduled eight-round semifinal.

Perez, 22, is 10-2-1, 4 K0s. He has been improving rapidly, winning his last four over Lenwood Dozier, of Glen Burnie, MD; Shamone Alvarez, of Atlantic City; Dante Moore, of Cleveland, OH; Julius Kennedy, of Windsor Mill, MD.

Freeman, 28, is 9-1-2, 5 K0s. He has lost only once, a questionable 10th-round knockout loss to unbeaten Samuel Rogers, of the Virgin Islands.

Five preliminary fights complete the card.

ABOUT AUGUST 24

The Kennedy-Collado fight tops a seven-bout card at Bally’s Atlantic City. First fight is 7.30 pm. Tickets are priced at $50 and $75 and they are on sale at the offices of Peltz Boxing (215-765-0922) and all Ticketmaster outlets (800-745-3000). Tickets also are on sale at www.peltzboxing.com and www.ticketmaster.com. www.gofightlive.tv will stream the card on the internet. Ishe Smith cut; fight with Molina postponed

IBF Jr. Middleweight champion Ishe Smith suffered a cut over his right eye that forced the postponement of his July 19th mandatory defense with Carlos Molina according to Dan Rafael of espn.com

“I suffered an injury [Saturday], a minor setback in my preparation to face off against Molina,” Smith wrote on his Facebook page. “I want to make sure I am properly prepared and in the best form possible to fight him. Not only does he deserve to fight me at my best, but also my family, friends and training team deserve to have me fight at 100 percent.

“It’s very hard to postpone after we have had such a great camp, but the sport of boxing and the fans deserve to watch Molina and I fight at our peak fitness levels, and I just can’t provide that with the untimely injury. With that said, I will be postponing our July 19th fight in order to heal from a cut on my eye.”

“We are very disappointed. Carlos was looking forward to the fight,” Luis DeCubas Sr., Molina’s adviser, told ESPN.com. “We’ll reschedule the fight and Carlos will be ready to go. He is always training. We were ready to go on July 19, but an injury is an injury.”

The Showtime televised show will go on at the Hard Rock in Las Vegas featuring undefeated Super Middleweight Badou Jack taking on Farah Ennis and Lightweight’s Mickey Bey battling former world title challenger John Molina Jr.

UFC® STARS OFFER INSIGHT ON SILVA-WEIDMAN

Las Vegas, Nevada – Anderson Silva’s reign of terror over the middleweight division began with a three-minute mauling of Rich Franklin in October 2006 and, in the seven years since, “The Spider” has barely been challenged inside the Octagon®, turning away a Who’s Who in the 185-pound and even 205-pound divisions.

However, a growing number of experts expect that challenge to finally emerge in the form of undefeated No. 1 contender Chris Weidman at UFC® 162: SILVA vs. WEIDMAN on July 6 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nev.

Leading Las Vegas oddsmakers make the 9-0 Weidman the shortest underdog to face Silva in over five years, since then-reigning PRIDE® FC champion Dan Henderson collided with the Brazilian back in March 2008. The sportsbooks believe a Weidman victory this Independence Day Weekend is more likely than a Chael Sonnen victory was at last summer’s Independence Weekend event, despite Sonnen having famously dominated the Silva for four-plus rounds in a previous bout.

And UFC president Dana White said: “Every fighter out there that I’ve talked to and every fighter we’ve interviewed thinks Weidman is going to beat Anderson. All the pros think this is the biggest challenge Anderson has ever faced in the UFC. These are the guys who know the sport, the pros, and they are all saying Weidman could really shock the world. This is a huge fight in the middleweight division.”

Here some of the biggest names in the UFC weigh in on what could be the upset of the year.

Chael Sonnen (two-time title UFC middleweight title challenger to Anderson Silva)

“Listen, he has two wins over me, it does me no good at all to bash Anderson publically now that our thing is over. But that’s not what I am doing here. I think Anderson is an excellent fighter, an awesome fighter, but he’s just not winning this fight.

“I think Weidman takes Anderson down at will, I think he blows past Anderson’s guard, and I think he finishes him. Taking Anderson down isn’t a hard thing to do. Chris will get to Anderson’s head, hurt him with ground and pound, and submit Anderson within three rounds with a D’arce choke or similar. Weidman is a younger version of me – and a better version when it comes to aspects like top game. I took Anderson down repeatedly, and while I punched him all night, I don’t have the submissions Weidman has. Weidman is going to have the same success I had with a ground attack but then he’s going to choke Anderson.

“The seven-year reign is over. That’s genuinely what I feel.”

Ronda Rousey (reigning UFC women’s bantamweight champion)

“I think Anderson Silva is the best pound-for-pound fighter in the world, but Weidman is the absolute worst possible matchup for him. It’ll definitely be interesting and I’m excited to see what happens on the night.”

Matt Serra (former UFC welterweight champion, trains BJJ with Weidman)

“Chris is going to shock a lot of people. The combination of Chris’s skillset, which is a bad matchup for Anderson on any day, and his mentality to win is going to result in a huge win. Everyone sees what this kid has skill-wise, and Chris doesn’t take ‘no’ for an answer. He’s a beast, he’s an animal. He will take this fight to Anderson Silva – but unlike some of the other guys, he will do it with aggression and skills. He’s the complete fighter to beat Anderson.”

Miesha Tate (former women’s bantamweight champion, No.3 UFC contender)

“Chael Sonnen almost beat Anderson based on being a wrestler. And Weidman is a more dynamic wrestler than Sonnen – and Weidman doesn’t get caught in submissions. Weidman’s wrestling definitely gives him a chance.”

Georges St-Pierre (two-time and reigning UFC welterweight champion)

“I believe it’s a bad matchup for Anderson Silva. Very bad, style wise. Anderson’s weaknesses are Weidman’s strengths. I’ve trained with Weidman and his wrestling is on another level. Not only is Chris Weidman going to beat Anderson Silva, I believe he’s going to finish Anderson. I believe it’s not going to last too long, this fight. This fight will shock a lot of people. I’ve trained with Weidman and I know how good he is. He will be the champion. Anderson is smart, though, and is fighting Chris after a long layoff for injury. That’s why it is important for Weidman to have a great camp. But if Weidman gets though camp with no problems, he will win this fight.”

Kenny Florian (UFC Tonight host, three-time UFC title challenger)

“Weidman is going to be Anderson’s biggest challenge. Weidman is a guy who can take you down, has a tremendous ground and pound game and has excellent submissions as well. I think his D’Arce choke can pose a lot of problems for Anderson Silva when the fight hits the ground. The way Anderson tries to get to his feet – and the way Weidman controls opponents on the ground using their heads – will leave Anderson very vulnerable to the D’Arce.

“If you look at what my UFC Tonight co-host Chael Sonnen did to Silva – he won all five completed rounds over two fights – and not just kinda slightly won. He dominated, and Weidman is a bigger, stronger, younger and harder-hitting version of Chael. I don’t think there is any fighter in the world who can hope to beat Anderson on the feet, but I think Weidman can and will get this to the ground and, once there, I expect him to be in a huge position to win the fight.”

Michael Bisping (No. 4 ranked middleweight contender)

“With Weidman, I think he’s got a hell of a shot at becoming the new champion. Anderson Silva is the greatest of all time but, believe me; Weidman has a very bad style for him. A nightmare style, really. Weidman will be able to take Anderson down, and do serious damage when he does so. Weidman has a great ground game, and that’s where Anderson has shown vulnerabilities. Chael Sonnen took Anderson down at will and Anderson hardly ever got himself up; he had to wait for the end of the round. When I fought Chael I got up every time and punched him in the face. Anderson is the best fighter of all time, but his weakness is wrestling and Weidman is at least as good as Chael in that area.

“Also, you have to factor in that Anderson has been doing this for a very long time now. He’s put his body through a lot in the gym over the years and we all get old eventually. Beating guys like one-legged Canadians and broken down, semi-retired light heavyweights is one thing, but if Weidman can back his mouth up and really take the fight to Anderson I think he can do this.”

Gray Maynard (two-time UFC lightweight title challenger)

“If anyone is going to beat Anderson Silva, and stop this guy retiring with the belt, undefeated in the UFC, for sure it is Chris Weidman. Weidman is the only guy I can point to in the division and go ‘This guy can do it, this guy can beat Anderson’.”

Daniel Cormier (No. 2 ranked UFC heavyweight contender)

“I am always partial to wrestlers, but I honestly think Weidman has the tools to win this fight. Anderson is the greatest of all-time, but Weidman has the blueprint set by Chael Sonnen. It’s not like he has to spend a round or two figuring out what he has to do to win. Just follow the game plan that Chael had success with: take Anderson down and pound on him. I think Anderson’s takedown defense has improved over the years, but Chris is such a good wrestler he will get the job done. I pick Weidman by decision.”

Frank Mir (two-time UFC heavyweight champion)

“Anderson has shown one weakness – he can be controlled on the ground by powerful wrestlers – and Weidman is the most powerful wrestler there is in the division. Everyone is making the comparison to Chael Sonnen, but while Chael controlled Anderson on the ground and landed shots, he couldn’t hurt Anderson and that was his undoing. Weidman can hurt Anderson with ground and pound and he can submit Anderson.

“The only way I see Weidman not winning is if he has a macho thing where he has illusions of striking with the best striker in the world. But I think he’s too smart for that. I’m not just saying he’s got a great shot, I am picking Weidman to win.”

Alan Belcher (UFC middleweight contender)

“Weidman has all tools; on paper he can do this. Anderson always seems to find a way to win, but everyone is human, and style wise, I don’t like this for Anderson. Weidman’s really good on the top, and he could sub Anderson. He’s that good on the ground. What worries me about Weidman is he knows just enough to get himself into trouble on the feet. He is just good enough to land a shot or two and think he can win standing up. But he can’t. No one can beat Anderson standing. Weidman has to get this to the ground, and when that happens it is Chris Weidman’s fight, Chris Weidman’s world. If this hit the floor in the first round, it is going to be insane because Weidman could sub Anderson Silva in the very first round.”

Roger Gracie (UFC 162 fighter, middleweight)

“Weidman’s grappling is at a very high level. He has some very good submissions. He can put a lock on anyone – any world class grappler. I think he’s that good that he can tap anyone, including me or Anderson Silva.”

TJ Grant (No.3 contender, UFC lightweight title)

“Personally, I feel Weidman has the tools to win. He’s young, confident and his grappling is on a completely different level. You never want to pick against Anderson Silva, but I give a slight edge to Weidman.”

Luke Rockhold (No.7 UFC middleweight contender)

“This is a 50/50 fight. I’ve not thought that about an Anderson fight in a long time, but this can go either way.”

John Moraga (No.4 flyweight contender)

“I’m going out of a limb and say Weidman is taking him out. He is real determined and confident and that’s the key to beating a legend. Weidman is going to let it all go, and I think his style is all wrong for Anderson. I can see Weidman dominating, actually.”

Rick Story (UFC welterweight contender)

“I can see Weidman grinding out a points win by controlling most of the fight on the ground. Ask Chael Sonnen, five rounds is a long time not to make a mistake in Anderson’s guard, but Chris is so young and hungry I think he can do it.”

Johny Hendricks (No.1 welterweight contender)

“Anderson doesn’t like to start fast but I think in this fight he needs to get going early. Weidman is coming off a long layoff and Anderson should take advantage, jump on him, and go for the first round KO. But if Weidman gets to the later rounds, his wrestling and being so young will take over. I think Weidman has the style and the skills to win this fight and I pick him to win a decision.”

Dominick Cruz (UFC bantamweight champion, FOX Sports Analyst)

“Weidman can absolutely do it. But against Anderson Silva the pressure is on not to make a mistake while he uses his strikes to set up a takedown. That is the critical thing for Weidman. I’ve spent some time with Chris, he’s a smart dude, and he knows he’s not going to try to strike with Anderson. And he has to be conscious of that fact: Striking wise, Weidman cannot compete against Anderson on any level. At all. The reason he was able to land that elbow against Mark Munoz was Munoz was trying to set up for a takedown just as much as Weidman was and, knowing that, Weidman was waiting for the overhand right and that allowed him to land that elbow. He cannot land anything like that against Anderson.

“Weidman has to have the exact same game plan as Chael Sonnen; everyone is saying that is the blueprint for him to win this fight. But here’s the problem: Anderson had two fights with Chael and has had over 30 minutes of Octagon time with that exact strategy. Anderson went through at least two camps expecting that to be his opponent’s strategy. Anderson’s takedown defense is light years away from where it was even two years ago. Remember, takedown defense is only one aspect of one discipline in MMA – and it is one of the easiest aspects to improve on.

“But Weidman can still get him down. Anderson takes anything from a minute to half a round to figure out his opponent’s distance and timing, and Chris has to make use of that to score a takedown. Once he has Anderson down, he can strike very well, and I expect him to pass and force Anderson into a scramble. Anderson usually waits in his guard for a chance to escape or counter, but Chris hits hard enough and is active enough to force Anderson to try to get back up fast. That’s where I see Weidman winning the fight, in the scramble as Anderson tries to get back up.”

ASHLEY THEOPHANE: HOME FROM HOME

I was back in London after nine weeks in Las Vegas, watching and learning from the highest paid athlete and number one boxer in the world, Floyd Mayweather. That was a great experience to train with, and alongside Floyd and his fighters.
My services were requested by former world champion, Luis Collazo, whose team flew me to New York from London. Luis has fought some of the best fighters of our generation in Shane Mosley, Ricky Hatton and Andre Berto. It was the second time we were sparring, and the spectators would have gladly paid to have watched the action.
It was very good to be back at Gleason’s gym in Brooklyn.
Some of the greatest fighters ever to lace up boxing gloves have walked through the doors of Gleason’s gym; Muhammad Ali, Mike Tyson, Larry Holmes, Roy Jones, Marvin Hagler, Carlos Monzon, Pernell Whitaker, Wilfredo Benitez, Julio Cesar Chavez and Alexis Arguello have all trained at this gym. They are the greatest!
I’ve had the pleasure of training there since 2005. That is now eight years. Whenever I walk through the doors when returning from the UK, Bruce Silverglade, the owner always says “welcome home”. This place is my home away from my home at All Stars Boxing Club in London.
I’ve learned so much at Gleason’s gym and I’ve made some friends for life. Many of the fighters there encourage me “to keep on doing what I’m doing”, as it inspires them and helps them push hard towards their own dreams. I try to inspire myself everywhere I go, and when it rubs off on others around me; it’s an amazing feeling and motivates me even more to keep up the hard work, dedication and perseverance.
I have sparred world champions Joan Guzman, Elio Rojas, Yuri Foreman, Paul Malignaggi, Argenis Mendez and countless world ranked fighters at Gleason’s. For all my big fights, except my fight against former world champion DeMarcus Corley, I’ve had a training camp at Gleason’s gym. My fights with world champion Danny Garcia, two time world title challenger Delvin Rodriguez, British champion Lenny Daws and European champion Jason Cook where all performances that came from my day in, day out sacrifice at the world renowned boxing gym.
Whilst in Brooklyn, I had a very interesting meeting with a New York promotional group who are keen to sign me. They believe I am the sleeping giant in the 140lb division and that I am capable of beating any 140lb fighter in the world today. This informs me just how highly I am respected in America. State to state, and coast to coast, I’m recognised and respected. I am seen by many as one of the hardest workers in America. My conditioning has been praised at Mayweather’s Boxing Club in Las Vegas and at Gleason’s gym in New York City.
I’ve set the bar high for myself now, and consistency is now the key. There can be no letting up, if it’s in the ring, on the roads or in the gym. I have to keep pushing myself harder, faster and further.
We ended the week of training in Las Vegas with a 6am run up Mount Charleston. There were eight of us from the Mayweather Boxing Club. It was hard work running 9000ft above sea level. After the run former world champion and world class trainer to champions, Eddie Muhammad treated us to breakfast at Baby Stacks restaurant.
It is good to be back with all the guys in the gym. We work hard together and support each other on our continuing quest for glory.
We are stronger together.

JUAN CARLOS BURGOS TO TAKE ON DAULIS PRESCOTT ON JULY 26TH AT THUNDER VALLEY CASINO RESORT ON ESPN’S FRIDAY NIGHT FIGHTS

Burgos2
PHILADELPHIA, PA (July 1, 2013)—It will be a battle of former world title challengers on July 26th as Juan Carlos Burgos will square off with Daulis Prescott in a twelve round bout for the WBO Intercontinental Jr. Lightweight title that will be held at the beautiful Thunder Valley Casino Resort in Sacramento, California.

The fight is promoted by Banner Promotions and Thompson Boxing and will be broadcasted live on ESPN’s Friday Night Fights.

Juan Carlos Burgos of Tijuana, Mexico has a record 30-1-1 with twenty knockouts and most in boxing are calling him an “Uncrowned World Champion” for his effort on January 19th, when he battled WBO Jr. Lightweight champion Roman Martinez to a draw. Most at ringside and the millions watching on HBO believed that Burgos deserved to walk out of Madison Square Garden with the belt but the judges didn’t see it that way as the fight was scored 117-111 for Burgos, 116-112 for Martinez and 114-114.

The twenty-six year old is unbeaten in his last six fights, which include wins over undefeated Luis Cruz and Cesar Vazquez, as well as former world champion Cristobal Cruz.
Daulis Prescott of Barranquilla, Colombia has an impressive mark of 26-2 with nineteen knockouts.

Like Burgos, Prescott is also twenty-six years old. He rose up in the rankings by winning his first twenty-three bouts. In his last bout, he lost his bid for the WBA Featherweight crown when he came up short against Nicholas Walters on December 8th in Jamaica.

“We are looking forward to getting Juan Carlos back in the ring”, said Banner Promotions CEO Arthur Pelullo.

“Juan Carlos proved in the Martinez fight that he is the best 130 pound fighter in the world. My partners at Thompson Boxing and I were ecstatic to get a new contract done with him and we feel he will rule at 130 pounds and a great performance on July 26th will get him another shot at the title”.

“It’s important to keep a young fighter like Juan Carlos busy and primed for his next chance to a world title. Daulis Prescott will test him and it should be an excellent fight. Our #1 WBO fighter is just waiting for the next opportunity to show what he is capable of.” said Alex Camponovo of Thompson Boxing.

Special guests scheduled to be in attendance will be former world champions Tony “The Tiger” Lopez, Loreto Garza, James Toney and Hall of Fame referee Joe Cortez.

Tickets for this outstanding evening of boxing are $149.50, $124.50, $99.50. $74.50, $59.50, $45.50 & $39.50 and can be purchased at The Thunder Valley Resort & Casino and Ticketmaster.com

TONY THOMPSON READY FOR PRICE REMATCH ON SATURDAY JULY 6TH LIVE ON WEALTH TV & WWW.WEALTHTV.COM

SAN DIEGO, CA (July 1, 2013)—On Saturday afternoon July 6th, former two-time Heavyweight championship challenger, Tony “The Tiger” Thompson will try to make it two for two when he takes on 2008 Olympic Bronze Medal Winner David Price in the most anticipated heavyweight rematch of the year.

The fight can be seen Live In the United States on Wealth TV and www.wealthtv.com.

The card begins at 2:30 pm est / 11:30 am Pacific

Thompson shocked the boxing world on February 23rd when he scored a stunning one punch knockout over a then undefeated Price.

Thompson looks to be even better this time around.

“Training camp has been excellent. It actually has been one of the best camps in the last few years”, said Thompson.

Thompson believes that because of the quick nature of his knockout, that there still could be a feeling out process with Price.

“The last fight was so quick that we didn’t learn anything. It is a new start for everybody and we have put forth a whole new game plan for this fight”.

Thompson also believes that he gained the respect of Price with the big right hand in the first fight.

“I don’t think he will let me catch him with the same punch. I don’t know if he will hold back but I do see him being more careful and he has a little more respect for the older guy.”

Before the first fight, Thompson hinted at retirement if had lost to Price and now he finds a new lease on his career but knows he has to get the victory on July 6th.

“I have to beat Price. Losing puts me right back in the same spot that it did before the first fight and at my age (41) I am not looking to start over.”

Despite the emphatic result of the first encounter, Thompson is preparing for the best David Price.

“I am not surprised he took the rematch right away. He is a competitor but I am in great shape and I believe I will win on July 6th”

Unfinished business for Marcus ‘Hurelius’ Upshaw

MIAMI (July 1, 2013) – Modern day road warrior Marcus “Hurelius” Upshaw (15-9-2, 7 KOs) has unfinished business to take care of this Saturday night as the 32-year-old Floridian ventures to Minnesota for a rematch against “Sir” Carresso Fort (16-1-1, 11 KOs) in an eight-round bout at Black Bear Casino.

Upshaw and Fort fought September 9, 2011 in Tampa, Florida. The fight somehow ended in a six-round split draw with Upshaw winning on two of three judges’ scorecards (58-56, 58-56) with the other a draw (57-57).

“I won the fight, two of the judges had me winning, but I guess they didn’t want to give him (Fort) his first loss and it was called a draw,” Upshaw said. “It’s just going to be me and him in the ring and this time it isn’t going to go the distance. I should have gotten him out the last time. I don’t know why I didn’t win a split decision.

“He’s a brawler. If you keep popping him in the face, he will ‘nut up.’ If you let him get off, he’ll back you up and get his rhythm. He fights like (Marco Antonio) Rubio (Upshaw lost to Rubio in his last fight by 12-round unanimous decision on March 23 in Mexico) but Rubio is a lot better and more technical. I’m going to keep doing my thing – fighting anybody, anywhere – and showing my character.”

Fort lost his unbeaten record in his last fight, dropping an eight-round decision last April to 15-1 John Jackson in Atlantic City. “He’s coming off a loss like me,” Upshaw noted, “but the difference is I’ve stepped up my game in the last two years and he hasn’t. He hasn’t beaten anybody and the only good fighter he faced was Jackson who out-boxed him.

“If Fort has improved in the last two years, it’s only a little bit, and I just went 12 hard rounds with Rubio. Fort doesn’t have a jab or counter, and he loops his right hand. He may be a little better but he ain’t beating me Saturday night. I’ve been working hard in the gym every day and was already at 158 last week for our fight at 160.”

In 2001, Upshaw derailed 19-1 James McGirt’s rise to the top with a controversial 10-round majority draw, in which most fans felt Upshaw should have won. Two fights later, he upset 10-0 prospect Ashandi Gibbs (10-0) by way of a fourth-round technical knockout for the Florida State middleweight championship. Upshaw traveled to Quebec City in 2010 and registered his most significant victory to date, a startling 10-round decision over 21-1-1 local hero Renan St. Juste in his opponent’s backyard, pushing Upshaw up in the world ratings (IBF #6, WBO #9, WBC #11) at that time.

Two fights ago, Upshaw traveled to Connecticut and stopped local favorite Vladine Biosse (14-1-1) in the eighth round.

“Marcus is one of those fighters who can’t be judged by his record,” his manager Si Stern added. “He was terribly mismanaged earlier in his career but I’ve been with him the last four years and we eventually got him on the right track. Marcus is a very good fighter who can give any middleweight in the world a tough fight.”

Upshaw has rich athletic bloodlines. His uncle, the late Gene Upshaw, was an NFL Hall of Fame offensive guard for the Oakland Raiders; younger sister, Antonette, played professional basketball in the WNBA and Europe; his brother Harry III played pro basketball in Italy.

The upset specialist in on the road again but this time to complete some unfinished business with

FORMER WORLD CHAMPION M’BAYE VOWS TO BRING IT HARD AGAINST UNDEFEATED RUSSIAN STAR

New York, NY / Monaco / Johannesburg (July 1) – Well-travelled former world champion Souleymane M’baye (40-4-1, 22 KOs) has promised Khabib Allakhverdiev (18-0, 8 KOs) the fight of his life when they contest the WBA and IBO light-welterweight title in Monte Carlo on July 13.

The fight is the co-feature on the “Monte Carlo Million Dollar Super Four” final bill, taking place in Monaco and promoted by Golden Gloves.

M’baye says he will draw strength from a 10-week training camp, something seldom afforded him in his 15-year professional career.

The veteran began his preparation in his home town of Levallois-Perret (near Paris, in the Hauts-de-Seine region), with career-long trainer Jose N’Gufulu, who also looked after the late European cruiserweight contender Norbert Ekassi.

The Frenchman is now in Sheffield, England with Dominic Ingle, whom he credits with adding “new ingredients” to the M’baye package lest training becomes “boring”.

M’baye, aged 38, is positive that he has the game plan to knock the unbeaten Russian champion off kilter.

“I love his style, that is exactly what I need to make him face unexpected problems,” said M’baye, who speaks French, Spanish and the Wolof language of Senegal. “I do not want to say more, first out of respect, second because of superstition and third, because a fight is never ‘done’ before it takes place. I made this mistake in the past, I do not want to repeat it.

“Allakhverdiev is not a very well-known champion internationally but his promoter Vlad Hrunov is. Khabib is talented, undefeated and his win against the South African Kaizer Mabuza and Joan Guzman were pretty impressive.”

The challenger credits N’Gufulu with orchestrating his WBA light-welterweight title win against Raul Balbi in 2006, when his friend Amir Khan fought on the undercard.

“Everything is done in cooperation with my head coach who is also here in England with me. It was the same when Buddy McGirt helped for my preparation of the world championship against Antonin Decarie in 2010.

“For me, Dominic and his father Brendan make me also think about two of my idols in Prince Naseem Hamed and Johnny Nelson, in addition to Pernell Whitaker and Roy Jones jnr. With Dominic I immediately got ‘reciprocal chemistry’ from day one.”

M’baye hesitates to name the sparring partners he is using, acknowledging only that they are “talented and motivated”.

“When I regain my world crown, I will be able to thank them individually by mentioning their names. They are top boxers and top guys. It is a real pleasure to be here in Sheffield, the city of world champions.”

M’baye has carefully studied videos of the champion.

“Also, Jose and Dominic have studied Khabib inside out. I have done it on my side too. The more I know about him, the better I will understand the game plans prepared by my coach. I know that one of my weaknesses is that I think too much, but it is also one of one my strengths. I know what I do and why I do it.

“My strengths are my youth (laughs), my motivation, my experience, my style and the abilities and experience of my team.”

He dismisses talk that he is long in the tooth or unmotivated after a 15-year, 45-fight career.

“Yes, I have been pro for a long time after a brief amateur career, but I feel very fresh. I’ve never had an overly tough fight. When I lost against Gavin Rees and Ismael El Massoudi, those weren’t losses per se. It was simply because I made the huge mistake of underestimating them and because a lot of outside issues made these fights ‘complicated’. I do not want to make excuses. That is not my style, but it is true that during these two fights it was not truly me. In those fights I shot myself in the foot.

“Incidentally, at the end of the 11th round against Al Massoudi it was a draw but again this fight took place under such special circumstances that I simply do not want to think any more about it [he twisted his right knee in the 12th round and couldn’t continue]. The past is the past, only the future matters.

“I want to bring the WBA crown to my son ‘Souly Junior’. That is my dream and I think every day about it. I love my fans, who have always been behind me from the beginning of my career, even when I was fighting abroad everywhere in Europe, often as an undercard fighter. My fans brought me good words when I was feeling real bad, I owe them this title. It will be my seventh world title fight and I cannot miss out.

“For them, for my city of Levallois, for my family, for my full team, and for both the Principality of Monaco, which is giving me this unique opportunity, and France, Senegal and for President Mandela of South Africa, who I hope will recover, I have to win and will do so.”

Nevada reduces Chavez fine and suspends Love

Chavez_Lee_120612_001A
Friday the Nevada State Athletic Commission reduced the fine to Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. from $900,000 to $100,000 and suspended and fined J’Leon Love for banned substance infractions according to Dan Rafael of espn.com

On a 4-0 vote, the Nevada State Athletic Commission on Friday lowered the massive fine it handed out to Chavez after he tested positive for marijuana following his unanimous decision loss to middleweight champion Sergio Martinez on Sept. 15 at the Thomas & Mack Center in Las Vegas.

In another decision made at Friday’s commission meeting, the panel voted 4-0 to suspend middleweight prospect J’Leon Love of Detroit for six months and fine him $10,000 of his $100,000 purse for a positive drug test. He must also submit a clean urine test before he can fight in Nevada again.

Love, who badly struggled to make the 160-pound weight limit, tested positive for the banned diuretic hydrochlorothiazide, which is often used to assist in weight loss, following his controversial 10-round decision win against Gabriel Rosado on May 4 on the Floyd Mayweather Jr.-Robert Guerrero undercard at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas

“I’m the heart of my family,” Love told the commission. “If I fall apart, they fall apart.”

California Commission sides with Goossen on Ward dispute

WardWins300
The California State Athletic Commission sided with promoter Dan Goossen in his dispute filed by world Super Middleweight champion Andre Ward according to Dan Rafael of espn.com

“We’ve enjoyed a very honorable and successful relationship with Andre Ward and I can only hope having to go through this whole legal process will only strengthen our relationship moving forward,” Goossen said. “I’ve said for years that he had the talent — both in and out of the ring — possessed by the other greats before him such as Muhammad Ali, Sugar Ray Leonard, Oscar De La Hoya and, of course, Floyd Mayweather.

“Now I look forward to getting back to promoting Andre’s next bout, as well as helping him become the No. 1 fighter in the sport.”

“I want to thank the California State Athletic Commission and the Attorney General’s office for protecting not only their licensed boxers, but their licensed promoters as well,” Goossen said.

“I believe I am in the prime of my professional boxing career,” Ward said before the ruling. “Actions of a California licensed promoter (Goossen) are preventing me from defending my title and pursuing my profession. A boxer has a limited timeframe to earn his livelihood, provide for his family and, let alone, perform at a championship caliber level. Goossen’s actions leave me with the possibility of not stepping in to the ring at all in 2013.”

“It is absolutely crazy to me that this man (Goossen) would stand in the way of Andre’s boxing career and his next title defense, and not respect Andre’s request that his co-promoter and manager be part of those discussions,” said Ward’s manager James Prince. “Understandably, HBO did not want to get in the middle of any dispute between Andre’s co-promoters or Andre and Goossen, but for this man to refuse to attend a meeting because he wanted to be the only one talking with HBO and have sole control over Andre’s career is flat out wrong.

“There are multiple reasons to terminate the promotional agreement with Goossen and we are following proper procedures with our sole objective of always doing what is in the best interests of Andre Ward.”

Said Ward, “Goossen had various opportunities to meet with HBO and to interact with my manager. He refused and otherwise did not respond to my team regarding these important business dealings concerning my career.”
