CHAMPIONSHIP TRIPLEHEADER HEADS TO FOX DEPORTES ON JUNE 29

LOS ANGELES, June 28 – Three of Mexico’s finest young stars take to the ring at the General Arteaga Auditorium of Queretaro on Saturday, June 29, for “Tercia De Ases” (Trio of Aces), a hard-hitting tripleheader to air live on FOX DEPORTES.

In the 10 round main event, IBF female bantamweight world champion Yazmin “La Rusita” Rivas defends her crown against Japanese contender Kimika Miyoshi. But the championship action doesn’t stop there, as Toluca’s Ibeth “La Roca” Zamora puts her WBC female junior flyweight title on the line against Culiacan’s Maricela “La Baby” Quintero, and in the 12 round super flyweight opener, NABF champion Jose “Sugar” Salgado of Cozumel takes on Japan’s Toyoto Shiraishi.

“Tercia De Ases” is presented by Golden Boy Promotions and Canelo Promotions and sponsored by Corona. Doors open at 6 p.m. CT and the first fight begins at 7 p.m. CT. The FOX Deportes broadcast begins at 10 p.m. ET / 7 p.m. PT. The Televisa broadcast begins at 10:30 p.m. CT. The action will take place in Apatzingan, Michoacan at the Adolfo Lopez Sport Center.

Torreon’s Yazmin Rivas (27-7, 9 KOs) has been competing professionally since 2001, quickly earning the respect of boxing insiders and fans with her hard-fought 2004 bout with Jackie Nava and her first title winning effort against Lucia Avalos for the WBA super flyweight title in 2005. After a 2011 stint on a popular reality show in which she went 3-0-1, the 25-year-old won the IBF bantamweight title with a decision win over 21-0 Susie Ramadan, and she has gone on to successfully defend her belt four times.

Fighting out of Kanagawa, Japan, 29-year-old Kimika Miyoshi (8-5-1, 3 KOs) bounced back from a rocky 3-5-1 start to her pro career to run off five consecutive victories, earning her a shot at Rivas’ title. In her most recent bout, on February 27, Miyoshi won the OPBF bantamweight belt with an eight round win over Riyo Togo.

A fighter unafraid of any challenge, Ibeth Zamora (17-5, 7 KOs) has been competing for titles as a pro since her third bout, when she lost a 10 round decision to Esmeralda Moreno. Three fights later though, she won the Mexican title, going on to add the interim WBA and WBC Youth belts to her resume. In March of this year, the talented 24-year-old took the vacant WBC junior flyweight title by decisioning Naoko Shibata, and on June 29 she will defend it for the first time.

Maricela Quintero (11-3-1) is a veteran of nearly five years in the pro game, and she is unbeaten in seven of her last eight bouts, with the only loss being a decision to former WBC 108-pound champion Esmeralda Moreno last November. Since then, Zamora has picked up the vacated crown, and Quintero has every intention of taking it when they meet later this month.

Despite being just 24 years old, Jose “Sugar” Salgado (31-2-1, 26 KOs) has done more than most boxers his age, and he’s just getting started. A pro since 2007 with 34 fights to his name, Salgado has won several regional titles, with the NABF 115-pound crown his latest conquest. Fresh off two successful defenses of the NABF belt, Salgado hopes that a win over Shiraishi will open the door for a 2013 world title shot.

Japanese veteran Toyoto Shiraishi (23-7-1, 11 KOs) is unquestionably one of Salgado’s stiffest tests, and the 27-year-old from Tokyo has every intention of leaving Mexico with a victory on June 29. Winner of two of his last three, the hard-nosed NABF title challenger has the skill and will to put on a memorable performance against the rising Mexican star.

Mora decisions Proksa

sergio_mora_image
Former WBC Super Welterweight champion Sergio Mora resurrected his career with ten round unanimous decision over former world title challenger Grzegorz Proksa in a Middleweight bout at the Veterans Memorial Arena in Jacksonville, Florida.

Surprisingly it was Mora who landed the harder punches as well as dictating the pace against Proksa who looked befuddled at times. Mora was very effective with the lead right and fought more aggressively than he has showed in previous fights. Maybe that was the effect of dropping two close decisions to number-one ranked Brian Vera. Whatever the case may be, Mora looked good as he caused swelling under the right eye of Proksa, who looked like he never was comfortable in the bout.

Mora of Los Angeles, CA won by scores of 98-92, 96-94 and 96-94 and is now 24-2-2. Proksa of Poland is now 29-3.

Patrick Tiexiera remained perfect with a ten round unanimous decision over spoiler Marcus Willis in a Jr. Middleweight bout.

Tiexeira landed the harder blows and was more active. He rocked Willis several times and had him wobbled in round three. Willis landed some good shots but it was few and far between against the hard charging Tiexeira, who fought most of the fight with a cut over his left eye.

Tiexiera, 154 lbs of Sao Paulo, Brazil won by scores of 98-92, 97-93 and 96-94 and is now 20-0. Willis, 154.2 lbs of Fort Myers, FL is now 13-3-2.

DELVIN RODIGUEZ RE-SIGNS WITH MANAGER A.J. GALANTE‘S ELITE BOXING ENTERPRISES

delvin-rodriguez_image
DANBURY, CT (June 28, 2013)—AJ Galante’s professional boxing management company Elite Boxing Enterprises is proud to announce the re-signing of former Super Welterweight title challenger Delvin Rodriguez, to an extension of Galante’s managerial contract.

The deal was reached earlier this week with Galante happy about the future.

“I’m very excited that Delvin and I have come to terms to continue our business relationship.” Said Galante

“We’ve formed a very young and hungry team, and we’ve made great strides in just two years. We still have our work cut out for us, in regards to reaching our goal of becoming a World Champion. I know Delvin has it in him to become world champion, and that is why I have continued working with him and have dedicated so much time and effort into him. Myself, along with our promoter Joe DeGuardia of STAR Boxing, have a great plan for the coming year, and I feel as long as Delvin continues to win, we will be champion sooner than later.”

Rodriguez of Danbury, Connecticut has a record of 28-6-3 with sixteen knockouts. He competed for the WBA Super Welterweight title on June 2nd, 2012 when he came up short and dropped a unanimous decision to Austin Trout.

Rodriguez competed in the 2011 Fight of The Year when he and Pawel Wolak fought to a draw on July 15, 2011 in New York City. Rodriguez subsequently won the rematch on December 3rd, 2011 by winning a unanimous decision. The match was part of the Miguel Cotto – Antonio Margarito rematch undercard that seen worldwide on HBO Pay Per View.

The 33 year-old Rodriguez is coming off a eighth round stoppage over former world title challenger Freddy Hernandez on May 24th in Uncasville, Connecticut.

Galante also manages undefeated Jr. Middleweight prospect Frank Galarza (10-0-2, 6 KO’s) of Brooklyn, New York

Mayweather – Alvarez breaks Gate record

floyd-mayweather
According to Dan Rafael of espn.com, the September 14th mega fight between Floyd Mayweather and Canelo Alvarez will shatter the all-time records for gate receipts for a prize fight.

Golden Boy Promotions chief executive Richard Schaefer told ESPN.com the fight will generate a minimum of $18,647,000 in ticket sales and “it could go up to a little shy of $19 million depending on the number of comps that are given out. It’s going to be the record. The MGM is calculating and has to do the ticket settlement, but it will definitely be the record.”

“Everything is gigantic with this fight,” Schaefer said from Atlanta, where he was Thursday for stop No. 5 on an 11-city media tour to promote the fight. “Two months out and you can say within 2 percent what the gate is. The more comps, the less the gross will be but the casino gets a certain number of comps, the fighters get a certain number of comps, Showtime and Showtime Pay-Per-View get some, the sponsors get some. I have to go through the list. The gate number will go up from where we are at now and it’s already the record. I don’t want to have too many comps.”

Said Mayweather: “This sellout doesn’t surprise me because this is what happens when the best fights the best. I want to thank all the fans for their support. They’re going to see a hell of a show on Sept. 14.”

Schaefer said the fight also has set the record for a guarantee on national closed circuit revenue, which is derived from people who pay to watch the fight at bars and restaurants. He said De La Hoya-Mayweather generated a record $3 million guarantee and that the Mayweather-Alvarez closed-circuit rights went for $4 million.

Although Schaefer declined to disclose the exact figure, he said the Mexican television rights for Mayweather-Alvarez that went to Televisa brought “four times as much as they did for De La Hoya-Mayweather. That just shows you how big Canelo is in Mexico.”

“These lofty records, you have to wonder if they will ever be broken. I am always hopeful because records are here to be broken,” said Schaefer, who will be in Miami for stop No. 6 on the media tour. “The gate record has fallen. The closed-circuit record has fallen for the guarantee. I’m really proud of what we have accomplished as a company to set the record and then break the record. I’m going to try to break it again. That’s what motivates me. It shows how healthy the sport is.”

“I’m not going to say the pay-per-view record is going to fall but the more I see the turnout at these tour stops and the passion I have seen day after day from the fans, the more I think we have a shot,” he said.

TRAINER JOHN DAVID JACKSON FIGHTERS SCORE 1-2 PUNCH IN BACK-TO-BACK TITLE ELIMINATORS

In a very eventful week, trainer John David Jackson guided two of his fighters to victory in title elimination bouts, proving that he is indeed one of the best rising trainers in the boxing business. Jackson, a former two-time world champion himself, helped two young boxers move a step closer toward their own championship dreams.

First, on Friday, June 14th, in Bethlehem, PA, “Russian Wrecking Ball” Sergey “Krusher” Kovalev, 21-0-1, 19 KOs, destroyed Houston’s Cornelius “Da Beast” White to take the #1 spot in the IBF light heavyweight rankings. Kovalev’s resounding 3rd round TKO in the scheduled 12-rounder was seen by a live national television audience on NBC Sports Network, and was the latest in a streak of devastating knockouts that have made fans cheer and opponents run.

Kovalev Hits White

The victory earned Kovalev a shot at the 175-pound belt currently held by boxing legend Bernard Hopkins. But rather than waiting for the 48 year old Hopkins to get around to giving him an opportunity, Kovalev instead accepted an immediate offer by HBO to face WBO light heavyweight champ Nathan Cleverly, 26-0, 12 KOs, on August 17th.

On the following Friday night, June 21st, another of John David Jackson’s top talents, Cuban Rances “Kid Blast” Barthelemy, 19-0, 12 KOs, lived up to his nickname by blasting out Fahsai Sakkreerin, 39-4-1, 21 KOs, of Thailand, at the Minneapolis (MN) Convention Center, in another title eliminator. Barthelemy, who now fights out of Miami, needed less than two rounds to claim the #1 perch in the IBF junior lightweight ratings. The fight, which ended at 1:26 of round two, was televised nationally by ESPN2.

Now the undefeated Barthelemy can look forward to a crack at New York-based Dominican Argenis Mendez, 21-2, 11 KOs, who currently holds the IBF belt at 130 pounds.

John David Jackson has worked with a number of world champions including Bernard Hopkins, Shane Mosley, Nate Campbell, and Randall Bailey. Now with Kovalev already booked for a title fight and Barthelemy presumably following right behind, Jackson appears to be on the verge of soon adding more championship luster to his already impressive resume. Talk about a good week!

Prospect Luis Olivares On fast track

HARTFORD (June 27, 2013) – Twenty-year-old “Magic Man” Luis Olivares, Jr. (4-0, 3 KOs), promoted by Curtis (50 Cent) Jackson’s SMS Promotions, is on the fast track to potential stardom. His accelerated path already finds him in his fifth professional fight, since his pro debut this past March, on the July 5th ESPNFriday Night Fights card, airing live from the Connecticut Convention Center in Hartford.

“50 Cent’s Birthday Bash,” the first solo venture by rapper/promoter 50 Cent’s SMS Promotions, is headlined on ESPN Friday Night Fights by a 10-round throw-down between undefeated North American Boxing Organization (NABO) and North American Boxing Association (NABA) light heavyweight champion Eleider “Storm” Alvarez (12-0, 8 KOs) and former world super middleweight title challenger Allan “Ghost Dog” Green (32-4, 22 KOs). Alvarez-Green is being presented in association with Groupe Yvon Michel (GYM).

In the 10-round ESPN Friday Night Fights co-feature, former International Boxing Federation (IBF) featherweight champion Billy “The Kid” Dib (35-2, 21 KOs), a native of Australia, meets hometown favorite “Machine Gun” Mike Oliver (25-3, 8 KOs), a former International Boxing Organization (IBO) super bantamweight titlist.

Alvarez, fighting out of Glendale, Arizona, will be fighting for the fifth time in only 3 ½ months, including his last on June 14, in which he stopped Juan Zuniga in the opening round of their fight in Santa Ynez, California.

“I’ve been blessed, truthfully, to be given opportunities to fight so often and get exposure,” Olivares said. “I’m with the right team at the right time. I was jumping up and down when I signed with 50 Cent. My sister first introduced me to his music. I grew-up listening to him and 50 was the first rapper I liked. I’m a movie fanatic and loved his movie, Get Rich or Die Tryin’. He can do so much more for a fighter than other boxing promoters, in terms of exposure, because of his superstar status, which isn’t limited to just boxing.”

Olivares was a standout amateur (120-15) whose career was highlighted by his bronze-medal placing at the 2012 U.S. Olympic Team Trials. He lost to the eventual 141-pound U.S. Olympian, Jamel Herring.

In his July 5th fight in Hartford, Olivares will take on another unbeaten prospect, super lightweight Jonathan Perez (4-0, 2 KOs), of Puerto Rico. It’s rare for a pair of undefeated prospects to fight each other so early in their careers.

“A lot of people have been asking me why I’m taking a risk fighting a 4-0 opponent,” Olivares explained. “I am fighting a tough guy but I’ll fight anybody. I don’t want to take a step backwards. My coach, Alan Biers, wanted to take the fight, so we sat down with my manager, Tony Gonzalez, and decided to take it. We’re all confident in my ability to win this fight.”

An explosive boxer-puncher who counters when opportunities present themselves, Olivares is a well-spoken, personable young fighter who, thanks to 50 Cent, is on the fast track.

Also fighting on the undercard in four rounds bouts is Cincinnati native Donte Strayhorn (1-1) vs. Hartford super lightweight Oscar Diaz (0-1), New Haven featherweight Nate Green (3-0, 1 KO) vs. Micah Branch (1-6-1), of Cincinnati, New Haven (CT) welterweight Jimmy Williams vs. Saul Almeida (0-1), of Woburn (MA), and pro-debuting super welterweights David Wilson, of New Haven, vs. Woburn’s (MA) Rodrigo Almeida. Unbeaten super welterweight Emmanuel “Pirata” De Jesus (4-0, 4 KOs) has been added to the card in a four-round match against an opponent to be determined.

Dib, Strayhorn and De Jesus are also promoted by 50 Cent. All fights and fighters are subject to change.

Tickets are priced at $150.00, $100.00, $60.00 and $35.00 (SOLD OUT) and available to purchase at Connecticut Convention Center (860-728-2625) or by calling Mike Criscio (203-627-7472). There is a 10-percent surcharge on all sold tickets. A $150.00 or $100.00 ticket entitles the bearer to free admission to 50 Cent’s post-fight party at the Connecticut Convention Center. Admission to the post fight party is $30.00 per person at the door for those without a fight ticket, or $20.00 for $35.00 ticket holders.

Doors open at 6 p.m. ET with the first fight scheduled to start at 7 p.m. ET.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (June 27, 2013) – Streaking submission specialist Charmaine “Not So Sweet” Tweet (4-3) of Regina, Saskatchewan Canada will replace an injured Julia Budd in a featherweight (145 pounds) main card bout against powerhouse Ediane Gomes (10-2) of Fort Lauderdale, Fla. via Sao Paulo, Brazil at the highly-anticipated Invicta Fighting Championships women’s world championship Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) event at Ameristar Casino Hotel Kansas City on Saturday, July 13, live on Pay-Per-View.

Additionally, Norma Center (2-0) of Albuquerque, N.M. will square off in a strawweight (115 pounds) contest with fellow undefeated rising star Joanne Calderwood (6-0) of Glasgow, Scotland after Calderwood’s original opponent, Sarah “White Tiger” Schneider of Raytown, Mo., was forced to withdraw from the bout due to a leg injury.

The 6-foot, 36-year-old Tweet is a winner of three straight fights, including her last start on June 1 when she submitted Amanda Bell in the first round (4:18) of their meeting with a rear-naked choke.

The 5-foot-6, 32-year-old Gomes, meanwhile, will enter the cage on a four-fight winning streak. Her last two victories – a first round (4:19) submission (rear-naked choke) of Katalina Malungahu and a unanimous decision over JEWELS star Hiroko Yamanaka occurred at Invicta FC 3 and Invicta FC 4, respectively.

All 4 of Tweet’s professional victories have come by way of submission while Gomes has claimed 7 of her 10 career wins by way of submission.

Center is a 25-year-old protégé of master trainer Greg Jackson. She made her pro debut on March 23, earning a unanimous decision over Rachael Cummins, after amassing a perfect 4-0 record as an amateur.

The 26-year-old Calderwood is a ferocious striker who has notched four of her six career victories by way of (T)KO. In her Invicta FC debut last October 6, Calderwood decimated Ashley Cummins with a

The showdown between rivals Cyborg and Coenen marks a highly-anticipated rematch to their explosive, barnburner first fight in Sunrise, Fla. on Jan 30, 2010 in which Cyborg emerged victorious by way of TKO (punches) in the third and final scheduled round (3:40) of action.

In the strawweight co-main event, a pair of undefeated stars in JEWELS champion Ayaka Hamasaki (9-0) of Tokyo, Japan and Claudia Gadelha (9-0) of Mossoro, Rio Grande Do Norte Brazil will put their untarnished records on the line against each other.

In other action on the Invicta FC 6 main card, three-time Invicta FC fight winner Sarah D’Alelio (7-3) of San Jose, Calif. will take on undefeated upstart Lauren Taylor (6-0) of Anchorage, Alaska at bantamweight (135 pounds).

After her second Invicta FC “Fight of the Night” performance, prolific striker Leslie “The Peacemaker” Smith (5-3-1) of Pleasant Hill, Calif. will drop from bantamweight to flyweight and face off with Jennifer Maia (7-2) of Curitiba, Parana Brazil. Maia is coming off her second consecutive win, a unanimous decision over superstar Zoila Frausto Gurgel, at Invicta FC 5 on April 5.

Former Invicta FC world atomweight (105 pounds) champion Jessica Penne (10-2) of Huntington Beach, Calif. will look to rebound from her hard-fought defeat at the hands of Michelle Waterson in the main event of Invicta FC 5 when she squares off with battle-tested road warrior Nicdali “The Night Queen” Riveral-Calanoc (8-6) of Tulsa, Okla.

Crowd-pleasing finisher “Rowdy” Bec Hyatt (5-2) of Brisbane, Queensland Australia will look to notch her second straight victory under the Invicta FC banner in a strawweight showdown with JEWELS star Mizuki Inoue (5-1) of Nagoya, Aichi Japan. Hard-hitting Muay Thai stylist Miriam Nakamoto (1-0) of Dublin, Calif. will square off with Duda “Diamond” Yankovich (1-1) of Rio De Janeiro, Brazil in a bantamweight bout.

A four-bout preliminary card will be highlighted by a strawweight collision between unbeaten upstarts Rose Namajunas (2-0) of St. Paul, Minn. and Tecia “The Tiny Tornado” Torres (2-0) of Fort Lauderdale, Fla. Namajunas captured the attention of the entire MMA fight world when she scored a stunning, 12-second submission on Kathina Catron at Invicta FC 5.

Ashley “Smashley” Cummins (3-1) of St. Louis, Miss. will face Emily Kagan (2-1) of Albuquerque, N.M. at strawweight.

Power striker Veronica “The Heartbreaker” Rothenhausler (1-0) of Sacramento, Calif. will collide with Mollie Estes (1-2) of Oceola, Miss. in a featherweight scrap.

Wilder to face former champion Liakhovich

deontay-wilder
Undefeated knockout artist Depntay Wilder will take on former WBO Heavyweight champion Sergei Liakhovich on August 9th on Showtime according to Dan Rafael of espn.com

“This is a great test getting in the ring with an experienced fighter,” said Wilder;s promoter Richard Schaefer. “[Liakhovich] is a former champion and he has a lot of experience. He’s clearly the most experienced fighter Deontay will have fought. But we feel he’s ready. It’s time to unleash the beast.”

“This kind of fight is a step in the right direction for Deontay,” said Golden Boy matchmaker Eric Gomez, who made the fight. “With heavyweights it’s a very long process but now Deontay is fighting a former world champion and a guy that’s tough. He’s tough and dangerous and the kind of guy Deontay needs to fight, a guy with experience who will fight back.

“He took a rest after the fight with Jennings,” Tony Cardinale, Liakhovich’s attorney told ESPN.com. “He was really disappointed in how he performed. He believed he took the kid too easy. He was convinced this guy had no experience and wouldn’t be a problem and he was a problem. Sergei wasn’t ready for that kind of fight.

“So he took some time off and then decided he didn’t want to stop fighting. He thinks the conditions of the weight class are such that with one big win anyone is in the mix, and this is his one big fight. He wins this fight and he’s back in the mix and ready for a shot at one of the [champion] Klitschko brothers. You win one good fight on television and hopefully you get a shot at one of them. Sergei is a tough guy and we expect Wilder will bring his ‘A’ game and Sergei brings his ‘A-plus’ game. We are signed, sealed and delivered.”

GENNADY GOLOVKIN-MATTHEW MACKLIN FINAL PRESS CONFERENCE QUOTES

Gennady Golovkin (208x138)
New York, NY (6/26/3) – This Saturday, June 29th, defending WBA/IBO champion Gennady “GGG” Golovkin (26-0, 23KO’s) meets Ireland’s top-rated former world title challenger Matthew “Mack The Knife” Macklin (29-4, 20KO’s) in their much-anticipated middleweight championship showdown at the MGM Grand Theaterat Foxwoods ® Resort Casino in Mashantucket, Connecticut. The championship matchup will be the main event on the HBO Boxing After Dark® triple-header, which will be televised live on HBO® beginning at 9:45 p.m. ET/PT.

The champion Golovkin and the challenger Macklin held their final press conference earlier this afternoon before a standing room only crowd at New York City’s famed Gallagher’s Steakhouse. Both fighters looked eager to get things underway after lengthy training camps and promised fireworks on Saturday night.

Below are photos and quotes from the final presser:

Gennady Golovkin: It is very good to see everybody, and I want to thank everyone who was involved in making this fight. We are very close right now to the fight night and I am very excited. I think this is a great fight for us. I am the champion, and Matthew is the best challenger out there for me. This fight will prove who is truly the best in the middleweight division.

Matthew Macklin: This is my third time fighting for a world title and I feel that I am a better fighter now than in either of those appearances. The biggest fights and the toughest challenges have always brought the best out of me, and I know that is what will happen on Saturday night. No disrespect, but he has never fought anyone of my caliber. The amateurs are the amateurs, this is the professionals. He was winning amateur championships when I was having 12-round wars.

There is an old saying, ‘When the going gets tough the tough gets going’, and I know we have a tough task on Saturday night, but I know that on Saturday night I WILL be walking out of that ring as the new middleweight champion of the world.

Tom Loeffler: Everyone involved with this promotion has been all class and shown nothing but professionalism. HBO wanted to put together the best possible fight for Gennady, and we feel that Matthew is that matchup.

Usually I am not known for being brass at press conferences, I will say though, and this is with all due respect, but we think that Gennady is THE best middleweight in the world right now. To make everyone else a believer though, we know that Gennady has to prove that, and we feel that is exactly what he will do on Saturday night.

A lot of people think that maybe Gennady is too overhyped, or risen a bit too quickly, but we feel everything he has right now he has earned and is deserved and an impressive victory over Macklin on Saturday night further solidifies that.

Lou DiBella: This is going to be a terrific fight and a terrific event on Saturday night. Golovkin has already been ordained as the 2nd coming and we and Team Macklin think that he needs to prove that, and on Saturday night he is going to have to walk through fire to do that.

Nobody wanted to fight this guy (GGG), partly because HBO and the press have already ordained him and have him out to be this beast of a human being. There is no doubting he had a great amateur career and his knockout ratio now is amazing. The difference in this fight though is that Matt Macklin is not scared of you. Matt Macklin is a big, strong, aggressive middleweight. This is going to be the hardest fight of your career Gennady.

I do give credit to Gennady though because he is a great champion. The whole world has run away from this guy, except for Matthew Macklin, and for that I salute you.

Abel Sanchez – Head Trainer Golovkin: I think Matthew’s biggest asset is having Buddy, who is such a great trainer in his corner. We are excited about this fight because we know Matthew is going to be right there in front of us. We are expecting a tough fight on Saturday, but also a short fight. It is going to be very exciting for as long as it lasts.

Buddy McGirt – Macklin Head Trainer: It is amazing when you get a fighter that wants to fight everyone, and that’s what we have in Macklin. He never takes easy fights. I think this is a great fight for Boxing, because it features the best fighting the best. People ask me what is the game plan? When you fight a guy that punches like this guy, you just have to keep is basic – keep your hands up, chin down and keep your ass off the ground. This fight is going to come down to nuts and guts and whoever has more of those on fight night will come out victorious.

Peter Nelson – HBO: We are really looking forward to this event on Saturday night. We expect an electric atmosphere. I think Macklin’s army is probably already there at Foxwoods gearing up for event.

This fight features two of the best middleweights in the world. This truly is the type of a dream match-up for us at HBO. Neither of these guys know how to fight going backwards and that is going to make for fireworks on Saturday night. They are great guys outside of the ring, but when these two get in the ring they become absolute killers. They come to fight and they come to deliver for the fans and we at HBO are proud to be a part of it.

Brian Peters – Brian Peters Promotions (Macklin co-promoter): Whether GG is superman or man of steal, we aren’t so sure, but what we are sure of is Matthew Macklin will take him places he has never been in his career. Barthelemy Calling out Champion Mendez and All Other Top Super Featherweights

Undefeated super featherweight Rances “Kid Blast” Barthelemy (19-0, 12 KOs) scored a second round KO over Fahsai Sakkreerin (39-4-1, 21 KOs) in an IBF eliminator for the #1 ranking on Friday night at the Minneapolis Convention Center in Minneapolis, Minnesota. A right to the midsection finished Sakkreerin at 1:26.

Fresh off his sensational one-punch KO 2 of Thailand’s Fahsai “Mountain Boy” Sakkreerin in an IBF eliminator for a mandatory title shot, Cuba’s now #1-rated super featherweight Rances “Kid Blast” Barthelemy (19-0, 12 KOs) is calling out his next opponent.

“Why wait for your mandatory to get it on? Let’s do this now!” said Barthelemy to current champion Argenis Mendez. “Instead of fighting a guy I beat, come take care of business with your top challenger.”

Mendez is currently scheduled to face former Barthelemy foe Arash Usmanee in August, but Barthelemy feels the champion should forget about taking an easier fight and focus on what champions do: defend against the best possible opponent.

Barthelemy, who crushed Sakkreerin with a single body shot at 1:26 of the second round says a fight against him would be much more lucrative and exciting.

“We can do this in New York or wherever you want. You live in New York, bring your Dominican community out and I’ll bring my Cuban brothers and sisters and let’s have an old-fashioned showdown right in the Big Apple.”

Barthelemy’s co-promoter, Leon Margules of Warrior’s Boxing (along with Bad Dog Productions), says he’s hoping to convince Mendez to avoid the politicking and prove himself a true champion without first taking a warm-up against the crude Usmanee.

“My guy deserves the fight,” he said. “Why defend against a guy who lost his last fight? Jump right in and let’s see what you’ve got. Given the ethnic rivalry aspect, it’s a bigger and more lucrative fight to face my guy. It’s good business and good for boxing.”

Margules says if Mendez insists on the Usmanee fight, then he is sending out an invitation to any of the 130-lb champions or top contenders: Rances Barthelemy is looking for you. Call me and let’s make a big fight.”

SHOWTIME CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING®: MALIGNAGGI VS. BRONER GARNERS SECOND HIGHEST VIEWERSHIP FOR BOXING ON SHOWTIME® WITH 1.3 MILLION VIEWERS

Adrien_Broner_1
NEW YORK (June 26, 2013) – Last Saturday night’s hotly contested Paulie Malignaggi vs. Adrien Broner Welterweight World Championship fight attracted an audience of 1.3 million viewers, the second-largest viewing audience for a bout on SHOWTIME since the network began tracking individual fights in 2009.

The average viewership for the SHOWTIME CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING televised tripleheader—promoted by Golden Boy Promotions from Brooklyn’s Barclays Center—was also the second highest average since Nielsen began separating SHOWTIME from the networks’ multiplex channels in 2004.

In the nearly 10 years since 2004, three of the top-four most watched SHOWTIME CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING live telecasts have aired in the last seven months—Cotto vs. Trout, Dec. 2012; Malignaggi vs. Broner, June 2013; Canelo vs. Trout, April 2013—marking an upward trend. The fourth was Bernard Hopkins vs. Jean Pascal in 2010.

Further, the top-four largest audiences for an individual bout on SHOWTIME have come in the last 10 months—the aforementioned three plus Canelo vs. Lopez in Sept. 2012.

The surge in average viewership over the past two years represents an increase of over 50% since 2011 with two consecutive years of double-digit percentage gains. From 2011 through 2012, SHOWTIME CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING ratings were up more than 30 percent and from 2012 to present, including last Saturday’s telecast, they are up 16 percent.
