SIX OF UFC®’S TOP 10 WELTERWEIGHTS IN ACTION AT UFC® 158: ST-PIERRE vs. DIAZ – TICKETS ON SALE JANUARY 26

Toronto, Canada – UFC® welterweight champion Georges St-Pierre has posted an impressive 10-fight win streak during his reign atop the 170-pound division. On Saturday, March 16, he will look to extend that streak by one more as he steps back into the Octagon® in his hometown to face former STRIKEFORCE® champion Nick Diaz at Montreal’s Bell Centre. On the heels of unifying the welterweight title in November 2012 after an 18-month absence due to injury, St-Pierre (23-2) requested the fight against his fiery rival Diaz (27-8-1, fighting out of Stockton, California), telling UFC President Dana White it was “unfinished business.” Diaz agreed.
The Ultimate Fighting Championship® will host a press conference on January 23 in Montreal with the main event stars, as tickets for UFC® 158: ST-PIERRE vs. DIAZ go on sale to the general public on Saturday, January 26 at 12 p.m. ET at evenko.ca and the Bell Centre box office.
In a compelling welterweight co-main event, Rory MacDonald (14-1, fighting out of Montreal, Canada) will get his shot at redemption as he aims to avenge his only career loss against former interim UFC welterweight champion Carlos Condit (28-6, fighting out of Albuquerque, N.M.). The duo met at UFC 115 in a Fight of the Night bout that saw Condit come from behind and register a TKO win with seconds remaining in the third round. MacDonald comes into the fight after a dominant decision win over UFC legend BJ Penn at UFC on FOX 5 in December. Meanwhile, Condit looks to re-establish his prominence at 170 pounds after an incredible battle with St-Pierre in November.
Completing the welterweight triple-header on the main card, power-punching wrestler Johny Hendricks (14-1, fighting out of Dallas, Texas) meets former US Marine Jake Ellenberger (28-6, fighting out of Lake Forest, Calif. by way of Omaha, Neb.) in a bout with title implications. The hard-hitting Hendricks is confident of his standing in the 170-pound division and looks to add a sixth consecutive win on March 16 to solidify his place as number one contender.
In addition to Montreal’s St-Pierre and MacDonald, six other Canadians will step into the Octagon® at UFC 158 including Calgary’s Nick Ring (13-1) who faces middleweight Chris Camozzi (18-5, fighting out of Lakewood, Colo.) on the main card. Ring was originally scheduled to face Costa Philippou at UFC 154 but had to withdraw at the last minute due to an illness. Camozzi has won three straight, earning his last win via unanimous decision over Luiz Cane.
Making his debut at welterweight, hometown favorite Patrick Côté (19-8) will square off against former STRIKEFORCE fighter Bobby Voelker (24-8, fighting out of Kansas City, Kan.) who will be making his UFC debut. Côté is coming off a disqualification win against middleweight Alessio Sakara at UFC 154, while Voelker comes in on a three-fight win streak.
Other Canadians in action are Jordan Mein (26-8, fighting out of Lethbridge, Alberta) who will make his UFC debut against veteran Dan Miller (16-6, 1 NC, fighting out of Whippany, N.J.), while Toronto’s Sean Pierson (13-6) battles welterweight Rick Story (14-6, fighting out of Vancouver, Wash.), Montreal’s John Makdessi (9-2) returns against Daron Cruickshank (12-2, fighting out of Detroit, Mich.) and Montreal’s Yves Jabouin (18-8) challenges bantamweight Johnny Eduardo (26-9, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil).

12-0 Vincent Thompson (Pictured Above)
The five bout card will feature 26 rounds of pro boxing action showcasing some of the best young boxing talent, both male and female, Washington state has to offer, along with the state’s first Dual Ring Card Girls, making the Skookum Creek Event Center the place to be in 2013 for boxing and sports fans.
“I was thrilled when Little-Creek CEO Michael Starr contacted me about creating a boxing series at Little-Creek, as I have known Michael for several years when he was a Casino executive in Las Vegas,” said Englebrecht. “What made it that much better is the Michael is a huge fight fan and will demand that all our Fight Club shows be the best in the Northwest, and I think we have accomplished that with our first show on February 23rd.”
Federal Way’s 29 year old Vince Thompson may be only three or four wins away from making some noise in the heavyweight division and now that he has signed a long term promotional contract with Roy Englebrecht Promotions, Washington area fight fans will see a lot more of Vince’s climb up the heavyweight ratings where he is presently ranked #32 by the WBC. Under the coaching of Sam DiTusa and Cal Thompson the future is now for Vince and he is up to the task as he faces tough Harvey Jolley out of Detroit in the February 23rd Fight Club Main Event. In another showcase fight, Tacoma’s 10-0 super middleweight sensation Mike Gavronski will be looking to keep the string alive when he meets Tennessee tough guy Nathan Bedwell. With eight knockout wins, Gavronski is becoming the “Rocky of the Northwest”, and he will need it all against Bedwell who might be the toughest 5-10 guy in boxing, going the distance against contenders like 17-4 Maxell Taylor 21-2 Gary Jones and losing a split decision to 21-2 Mike Paschall. This will be a Fight Club war!
And the females will also be featured in the 1,300 seat Skookum Creek Event Center as Lynnwood’s 4-4 Tammie “The Tasmanian Devil” Johnson will be back in action taking on tough Gloria Ramirez out of Southern California in a welterweight matchup. This fight could steal the show as both girls are evenly matched. Johnson is a dual athlete as she also plays for the Everett Myst female semi pro football team.
Kent’s Isaac Tadeo returns to his roots with a perfect 3-0 record and will have a ton of fans cheering him on as he fight back in Washington for the first time in a year. Tadeo who has knocked out all three of his opponents has the tools to become a solid prospect in the junior middleweight division, and he will be going for win number four facing Carl Hill out of Los Angeles.

Hernandez suffers fracture during sparring
Bad luck for Yoan Pablo Hernandez (27-1, 13 KOs): The IBF World Champion
broke his left hand during a sparring session ahead of his upcoming fight on
February 2. Hernandez was set to defend his title against Eric Fields (21-1,
15 KOs) at the Max-Schmeling-Halle in Berlin, Germany as part of the show
topped by the European Light Heavyweight Championship between Eduard
Gutknecht (24-1, 9 KOs) and Juergen Braehmer (38-2, 30 KOs), which will

Frederick Ness, Managing Director of Sauerland Event said: “We will stand by
Pablo and will make sure that he receives the best medical attention out
there. We are all hoping that he gets back as soon as possible.”
Unfortunately for Hernandez, this is not the first time that his left hand
is a cause for concern. He suffered the same sort of fracture during his
impressive performance against Steve Cunningham back in February 2012.
A replacement for the IBF Cruiserweight Championship has already been found.
28-year-old Robert Woge (10-0, 9 KOs) will fight instead of Hernandez with

WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP TRIPLEHEADER WEDNESDAY’S WORKOUT QUOTES FROM KINGSWAY BOXING GYM
NEW YORK (January 16, 2013) — Workouts took place today, Wednesday, at Kingsway Boxing Gym in New York for Saturday’s World Championship Triple Header at the Theater at Madison Square Garden.
Quotes follow…
Bob Arum: We have three really good fights on this card Saturday night. New York City has a very intelligent boxing fan base. You have to understand that when you put on a fight in New York City, you have to put a good card together for it to sell.
JUAN CARLOS BURGOS: This is my second opportunity for a world title and I don’t know if this chance will ever come again. I am dedicating this fight to my uncle (Victor Burgos). Ten years ago my uncle won his world championship. He won the title against a Puerto Rican and on Saturday night I can win a world title against a Puerto Rican also.
ROMAN MARTINEZ: (Martinez arrived in a Carmelo Anthony #7 Knicks jersey). I am wearing this jersey for ‘Melo because his father is Puerto Rican (his mom is African-American). I am representing my country in this fight. I think working the body is the biggest key for me in this fight. I think that will be to my advantage because of how tall Burgos is. I learned a lot in my last fight against (Miguel Jr) Beltran (split decision win on September 15, 2011). After that fight I went right back to the gym and haven’t stopped training since.
MIKEY GARCIA: People have been talking about this being the first big fight of the year and I’m glad to be a part of it. Everyone expects to see a good fight and they want to see a good fight. I am going to try and dictate the pace, but if I have to slug it out, I will. He will probably try and come in and if he does, I’ll be landing punches. He’ll find out that I have the power to hurt him. I will use counter-punches and throw the jab. Whatever it takes. We will see round-by-round how I will fight.
ORLANDO SALIDO: I come to fight. I give it my all every round. I want to give the fans a good fight but I know it will be a difficult fight.
* * Martinez and Garcia crossed paths in the gym and to everyone’s surprise, embraced and chatted for a few minutes. What could they possibly be talking about? “I just told him that we should go out there and put on a good show. A show that people will talk about for ages,” said Garcia. “He agreed.”
Crystina Poncher / Top Rank
ORLANDO “Siri” SALIDO will defend his World Boxing Organization (WBO) featherweight title against undefeated No. 1 contender MIKEY GARCIA; undefeated World Boxing Association (WBA) / International Boxing Organization (IBO) middleweight champion GENNADY “GGG” GOLOVKIN will look to extend his reign into its third year against world-rated contender “King”GABRIEL ROSADO; and two-time WBO junior lightweight champion ROMAN “Rocky” MARTINEZ will put it all on the line when he goes mano a mano with No. 1 contender JUAN CARLOS “Mini” BURGOS. MUSSACHIO RETURNS FEB. 23 AGAINST LIONEL THOMPSON AT BALLY’S ATLANTIC CITY-FIGHT LIVE ON GFL.TV
Atlantic City, NJ—Light-heavyweight Chuck Mussachio, of Wildwood, NJ, who has been on the fringe of the world rankings in recent years, returns Saturday evening, Feb. 23, at Bally’s Atlantic City, in a scheduled eight-round bout against Lionel Thompson, of Buffalo, NY.
Topping the seven-bout card is a scheduled10-round middleweight contest between Patrick Majewski, of Somers Point, NJ, and Jamaal Davis, of Philadelphia, PA. The show will be streamed live by www.gofightlive.tv.
Mussachio (right), 33, is a full-time guidance counselor at Ocean City (NJ) Primary School and he has boxed only once in each of the last two years. He also works as a bartender once or twice a week at the Concord Café in Avalon, NJ.
Late in 2011 at Bally’s, in a valiant attempt to take the USBA cruiserweight title from Garrett Wilson, of Philadelphia, Mussachio was stopped in the 12th round after leading on two of the three scorecards. He had moved up one weight class for that attempt. He weighed 183 ½ pounds against Wilson, the heaviest of his career.
In his last fight May 19, 2012, also at Bally’s, Mussachio rebounded and scored an eight-round decision over Bill Bailey, of Bakersfield, CA.
A pro since 2005, Mussachio is 18-2-2, 5 K0s. His victims include ex-WBA junior middleweight champ Carl Daniels, of St. Louis; Anthony Ferrante, of Philadelphia; Richard Stewart, of Dover, DE.
As an amateur, Mussachio had over 100 fights and was a two-time NCAA champion at Lock Haven University in Central Pennsylvania. He won the NCAA title at 185 pounds in 2001 and the NCAA title at 175 pounds in 2002. He also trained at the United States Olympic Education Center in Marquette, MI.
Thompson, 27, won his first 12 fights, eight by knockout, before running into some hard luck.
The same night Mussachio beat Bailey in Atlantic City, Thompson (left) was in Pointe-Claire, Quebec, Canada, where he dropped a 10-round split decision to Nicholson Poulard, of Lavel, Quebec, Canada. Scores were 96-94 and 97-93 for Poulard, 97-93 for Thompson.
In his last fight Sept. 21 at the Sands Casino Resort Bethlehem (PA), Thompson was stopped in three rounds by unbeaten Sergey Kovalev, of Chelyabinsk, Russia, in a fight Thompson accepted on three weeks’ notice.
As an amateur, Thompson was a five-time New York State Golden Gloves champion and a two-time Empire State Games gold medalist. He was ranked No. 2 by USA Boxing and was the Eastern Olympic Trials gold medalist in 2008.
Thompson attended Buffalo State College for Health and Wellness.

SERGIO THOMPSON BEGINS 2013 CAMPAIGN AGAINST MOISES CASTRO ON JANUARY 19 IN VILLA HERMOSA, MEXICO
LOS ANGELES, January 16 – Mexico’s hottest contender Sergio “Yeyo” Thompson, hopes to get 2013 off to a spectacular start against Nicaragua’s veteran Moises Castro in a 12-round fight for Thompson’s WBC Silver International Super Featherweight Title which will be televised on FOX Deportes in the United States and on Televisa in Mexico on Saturday, January 19 from La Nave Del Parque in Villa Hermosa, Mexico.
Plus, Mexican featherweights throw down when Celaya’s Robinson Castellanos takes on Sonora’s Edgar Ramirez in a 12-round fight for Castellanos’ WBC Silver Featherweight Title in the co-feature. Also featured in non-televised undercard action will be undefeated heavyweight contender Deontay “Bronze Bomber” Wilder taking on Matt Greer of Parkville, Missouri in an eight-round fight and unbeaten Ivan Morales battling Guasave’s Patricio Camacho (13-7-1, 10 KO’s) in an eight-round bantamweight bout.
Thompson vs. Castro is presented by Golden Boy Promotions and and Pepe Gomez Promotor Deportivo and sponsored by Corona, Periodico QueQui, Grand Oasis Cancun, the State of Tabasco, and Quintana Roo Tourism. Doors open at 6:00pm CT and the first fight begins at 6:30pm CT. The Televisa broadcast will air on Canal 5 at 10:30 p.m. CT and the FOX Deportes broadcast will air on Sunday, January 27 at 6:00 p.m. ET/3:00 p.m. PT.
Closing in on his long-awaited world title shot, Cancun’s Sergio “Yeyo” Thompson (24-2, 22 KO’s) hopes to keep his nine-fight knockout streak intact on January 19. Having gone four for four in 2012 with wins over former World Champion Jorge “El Nino De Oro” Linares, Juan Ramon Solis, Carlos Claudio and Luis Armando Juarez, the 29-year-old Thompson has put the 130-pound weight class on notice that he’s not leaving 2013 without gold strapped around his waist.
Coming to Mexico with the intention of spoiling Thompson’s run to the title is 34-year-old southpaw Moises “La Cobra” Castro (29-19-4, 13 KO’s). The winner of two straight, the native of Managua, Nicaragua has the experience and determination to give Thompson the fight of his life in Villa Hermosa.
30-year-old Robinson “Robin Hood” Castellanos (16-9, 10 KO’s) had a rough start to his professional career in 2002, but by the time he knocked out Hugo Morales in December of 2010, he had turned the corner, kicking off an eight-fight winning streak that has seen him crowned with the WBC Silver Featherweight Title. Fellow veteran Edgar “Pito” Ramirez (13-6, 12 KO’s) has been on a hot streak of his own though, winning 10 in a row, a string that includes nine knockout wins, all in four rounds or less. On January 19, this power puncher expects to put an end to Castellanos’ remarkable comeback by extending his own.
2008 U.S. Olympic Bronze Medalist Deontay Wilder (26-0, 26 KO’s) of Tuscaloosa, Alabama has quickly become turned into one of the toughest young contenders in the heavyweight division. The 6-foot-7 “Bronze Bomber” has been a force to be reckoned with knocking out every opponent he has faced including Damon McCreary, Owen Beck, Kertson Manswell and most recently Kelvin Price. The 27-year-old knows that if he keeps knocking out his foes, a world title shot won’t be too far away, but first he has to get past Greer on January 19.
The brother of the legendary Erik “Terrible” Morales, Ivan “Terrible II” Morales (19-0, 12 KO’s) has been impressive in his professional career thus far, staying active and improving with each fight. Just 21, Morales went 4-0 in 2012 and he plans on being even more active and efficient in 2013 beginning on January 19 against Camacho.

COMPLETE UNDERCARD ANNOUNCED FOR BB KING BLUES CLUB CARD WEDNESDAY JANUARY 23

New York, NY (1/16/13) – On Wednesday, January 23, DiBella Entertainment returns to BB King Blues Club in NYC for the first time in nearly a year with a stellar and thrilling nine-bout card featuring a number of DBE’s top up-and-coming prospects, as well as former WBA junior middleweight world champion Yuri Foreman (28-2, 8KO’s) making his much anticipated return to the ring after a near two-year hiatus. Foreman is scheduled to take on Brandon Baue (12-8, 10KO’s) in a six-round junior middleweight special attraction bout.
Fighting for the second time since joining the DBE roster will be the 25-year-old Lamar “Boxing Que” Russ (11-0, 7KO’s). Russ is scheduled to take on Jose Medina (17-11-1, 11KO’s) in an eight-round middleweight matchup.
Russ joined the DBE roster late in 2012, and in his first bout under the promotional banner, he scored a first-round annihilation on ShoBox: The New Generation over previously undefeated Jonathan Cepeda (12-0, 11KO’s). In his previous bout, Russ scored a fourth-round TKO over yet another undefeated prospect in the 13-0 Jose Alonzo. Russ is looking to kick off what he hopes to be a breakout year with an impressive performance on January 23.
Also seeing action on the card in an eight-round bout will be New Haven’s undefeated super bantamweight Luis “K.O. King” Rosa (11-0, 7KO’s) as he squares off against Derrick Wilson (9-3-2, 3KO’s). A native of Caguas, Puerto Rico, but now living and training in New Haven, CT, Rosa scored a dynamic sixth-round TKO over Victor Valenzuela in his last bout on the HBOBoxing After Dark undercard on September 29, at Foxwoods.
At just 21 years old, the super bantamweight Rosa is truly one of the bright young stars on the DBE roster.
Returning to the site at which he notched the most important victory of his young career will be Brooklyn’s undefeated Delen “Sniper” Parsley (9-0, 2KO’s), as he looks to improve to 10-0 when he faces Tyrone Selders (8-4, 6KO’s) in a six-round middleweight matchup.
On March 7, 2012 Parsley took on fellow unbeaten Boyd Melson. The bout, which could have easily been shown on ESPN or even ShoBox, had people excited about it from the get-go. Few could have predicted what transpired though, as Parsley and Melson went to war, trading multiple knockdowns throughout their eight-round junior middleweight contest. In the end, Parsley was awarded a razor-thin unanimous decision in what was one of the most entertaining and exciting fights ever witnessed throughout Broadway Boxing’s eight-year
existence.
Making his much anticipated pro debut on the card will be one of the most decorated amateurs to come out of the New York boxing scene in many years, as Long Island’s Patrick Day competes against Zach Kelley (1-1, 1KO) in a four-round junior middleweight contest.
Day, the 20-year-old #1-rated 152-pounder in the U.S., compiled an impressive 75-5 record as an amateur. In addition to being a 2012 Olympic Team Alternate, Day won a slew of championships and tournaments as an amateur including the 2012 USA Boxing National Championship, 2012 PAL National Championship and 2012 NY Golden Gloves. Day was also the 2009, 2010 and 2012 USA Metro Boxing Champion, as well as the 2010 and 2011 NY Golden Gloves runner-up. In addition to pursuing his professional boxing career, Day is currently attending college and plans on getting his degree in Sports Nutrition.
Fighting for the first time on a DBE-promoted card will be Bronx knockout artist Skender Halili, as he looks to make it a perfect 8-0 with 8 knockouts, when he squares off against Roberto Crespo (4-2) in a six-round welterweight matchup. The 22-year-old Halili, of Albanian descent, has tremendous power in either hands and has the ability to end any fight with one shot.
Making her third appearance on a DBE-promoted card will be popular Irish female super bantamweight Heather Hardy (3-0), as she looks to keep her perfect record intact when she fights Canada’s Peggy Maerz (2-2-1) in a four-round contest. In her previous bouts, Hardy has thrilled audiences with her come-forward aggressive style. Hardy is quickly becoming a major attraction on the N.Y. boxing scene and another exciting bout is expected on January 23.
Also seeing action on the card will be pro-debuting heavyweight Eugene Russell, who will be seeing action in a four-round bout. The NYC-native Russell is set to see action against Granson Clark (1-1, 1KO).
Rounding out the card will be New York’s Neuky Santalesis (2-0, 1KO), as he takes on an opponent to be named. The bout is scheduled for four rounds in the junior lightweight division.
There are less then 50 total tickets available for the event, with only a few $125 ringside seats remaining and the majority being the $55 general admission seats. Tickets can be purchased by calling the DiBella Entertainment office at (212) 947-2577. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. with the first bout scheduled for 7:00 p.m.

Don Elbaum & Greg Sorrentino Announce The $500,000 Great American Heavyweight Box-Off
NEW YORK CITY (January 15, 2013) – Veteran promoter/matchmaker Don Elbaum and financial backer Greg Sorrentino, today during a press conference held at historic Gleason’s Gym in Brooklyn, officially announced the creation of The $500,000 Great America Heavyweight Box-Off (TGAHBO). The tournament, planned as an annual event, is scheduled to launch in April at a site to soon be determined.
Introduced as participants were 2004 U.S. Olympians Jason “Big Six” Estrada (20-4, 6 KOs), of Providence (RI), and Devan Vargas (18-2, 7 KOs), of Toledo (OH), Tennessee (Chattanooga) knockout-artist Alonzo “Big Zo” Butler (28-2-1, 21 KOs), Minnesota (Coon Rapids) heavy-hitter Joey “Minnesota Ice” Abell (28-6, 27 KOs), former USBA cruiserweight champion Emmanuel Nwodo (24-5, 20 KOs), fighting out of Baltimore (Maryland), and a 22-year-old sleeper from West Virginia (Clarksburg), “The Mountain” Daniel Martz (7-0, 6 KOs). Talks are ongoing to finalize the remaining two challengers, plus one reserve, in case of injuries.
The purse structure will be $25,000 to the winners and $15,000 to the losers in the quarterfinals, $50,000 and $25,000, respectively, in the semifinals, leading up to the championship final in which the champion will earn $250,000 with $50,000 going to the runner-up.
“The history of boxing is the heavyweight division and America is a big part of it,” Elbaum said. “We weren’t looking for ex-champions or highly-rated fighters. Not one of the fighters here is. I’ll be the matchmaker; I’m picking the fights, no requests. I had this idea seven or eight months ago. Four months ago, I had discussions with some people and one person, Greg Sorrentino, said he’d back me because he believes we need this in the sport. He’s a former professional heavyweight and now a very successful businessman.”
“I’ve been involved in various aspects of boxing, never on the promotional end before, but I’m excited,” Sorrentino explained. “This is the greatest country in the world and we’re going to help get an American heavyweight champion to rule the roost again.”
Elbaum said he has had discussions with several possible venues, including some casinos in Atlantic City and Las Vegas, Turning Stone and Madison Square Garden, and that he’s close to making a television deal. He also noted that 12 other heavyweights are in the running for the remaining two spots in the field, plus one reserve fighter, and $25,000 of the TGAHBO champion’s purse will be donated to the winner’s charity of choice.
Also attending the press conference was Las Vegas legend Bill Krachenberger, who will set tournament odds on the individual fighters, as well as for all TGAHBO fights, to be offered at several Nevada sports books.
The fighter demonstrating the most “heart” in tournament fights, excluding the TGAHBO champion, will be awarded the Gennaro Pellegrini Jr. Award. Pellegrini, a member of the U.S. Army National Guard, had a dream to fight at the famed Blue Horizon before being shipped out to Iraq for duty. Elbaum made that happen in 2004 but seven months later Pellegrini was killed in action.
(L-R) Devan Vargas, Jason Estrada, Daniel Martz, Joey Abell and Alonzo Butler
Fighter Press Conference Quotes
Joey Abell: “I want to thank everyone for getting me involved in this tournament with world-class athletes. I plan to win the tournament by putting everything into it.”
Alonzo Butler: “I’ve been given a great opportunity to be in this heavyweight tournament. I’m ready to get it on and then bring the world heavyweight championship back to the United States.”
Emmanuel Nwodo: “I’m so glad I’m in the tournament and can’t wait. This is something new in the heavyweight division. It’s awesome! We’ll all show our best. This is an opportunity to prove ourselves and I’m proud to be part of it.”
Jason Estrada: “I appreciate being in this tournament. Good luck to everybody else….but not as much as me. I’m working hard in training and I expect the winner to be me.”
Devan Vargas: “I’m very excited about this tournament. These fighters will be out to prove themselves, unlike the top heavyweights who won’t fight us and are protected by their promoters. One of us will be the next heavyweight champion.”
Daniel Martz: “I don’t have as much experience as these other guys. They have a lot more fights than me, but this is a great opportunity to prove that I belong here.”
GABRIEL CAMPILLO READY FOR RING RETURN AGAINST SERGEY “KRUSHER” KOVALEV
Former WBA light heavyweight champion Gabriel Campillo, 21-4-1, 7 KOs, is ready for his return to the ring after a layoff of almost one year. He fights undefeated power puncher Sergey “Krusher” Kovalev, 18-0-1, 15 KOs, in an anticipated 10-rounder at the Mohegan Sun Casino on Saturday, January 19th. The fight is the feature bout in the season opener of NBC Sports Network’s popular FIGHT NIGHT boxing series. The telecast will begin at 9PM ET with the Elvin Ayala vs. Curtis Stevens co-feature.
The last time Campillo fought, February 18, 2012, he thought that he had once again become a world champion. However, after 12 rounds with IBF champ Tavoris Cloud, Campillo found himself on the short end of a controversial split decision. Cloud retained his title and sent Campillo back to the drawing board. However, the fans remained on Campillo’s side.
“Ever since February 12th, I hear a couple of times each day from the people that I deserved that decision,” Campillo said.
A win against the rapidly rising Kovalev might be exactly what Campillo needs to receive another crack at the championship, against Cloud or anyone else holding a belt.
“I want to fight every big name in the division until I am considered the number one boxer in the 175-pound weight class,” Campillo said.
The first step is beating “Krusher” Kovalev.
“He’s a dangerous boxer with a very good right cross,” Campillo said. “But he has never fought a world class boxer like me. I am great at bobbing and weaving and counter punching. If we go to the scorecards, I have no doubt I’ll win by a huge margin. But just maybe one of my counter punches will end the fight.”
The pair was originally scheduled to face off in September, but a Campillo back injury forced a postponement of the fight.
“My back is completely recovered,” Campillo said. “Even though I only fought one time last year, I kept training and had sparring sessions throughout the whole year. So I am in great shape.”
The fight in Uncasville, CT, will only be the third time Campillo has boxed in the United States, but he welcomes his return to the USA.
“I love fighting in America,” Campillo said. “The people always treat me like I am American. I love that. Boxing in Spain doesn’t have the same prestige that it does in the States. Here every sportsman is respected.”
Perhaps that lack of prestige is due to the fact that boxing champions from Spain are a fairly rare breed. Campillo is one them, but feels he needs more victories and more titles before he’s considered the best ever to come from his country.
“I think Javier Castillejo has won more titles than me, but I can beat him yet,” Campillo joked.

Anderson and Lartei Lartey vie for title in Newark!!!—WATCH LIVE ON GFL
Heavy handed Newark welterweight sensation Michael “Slick” Anderson (12-1-1, 10KO’s) is ready put it all on the line on Saturday night, January 19th at the Luxurious Robert Treat Hotel, in Newark, New Jersey when he swaps punches with dangerous Ghanaian southpaw Emmanuel Lartei Lartey (13-0-1, 7KO’s) in the ten round main event of the evening for the WCB regional title. If that weren’t enough, Matchmaker Renee Aiken and All Out Promotions in association with Global Boxing Promotions has put together an a loaded undercard featuring some of the best up and coming fighters the region has to offer, including two can’t miss co-features. The first six round co-feature of the evening will showcase the return of undefeated Glassboro, New Jersey super middleweight Derek “Take to the Bank” Webster (13-0, 7KO’s) as he takes on wily veteran Darnell Boone (19-19-3, 8Ko’s). The second co-feature will be a six round heavyweight slugfest as Newark’s own Tyabb Beale (7-3-1, 3KO’s swaps punches with Aaron “The Animal” Kinch (4-0-1, 1KO).
Anderson of Newark, New Jersey, has explosive power in both hands as shown by his ten knockouts in his twelve victories. In his last bout on October 13thMichael Anderson flashed his power, needing only two minutes and thirty three seconds to stop gritty fifty fight veteran Miguel Angel Munguia. Now, the stakes have been raised and the WCB title is on the line on Saturday night. At thirty two years of age, Anderson knows his time is now and it is “All or Nothing” as he looks to show the people of Newark that he has what it takes to be a champion when he faces Emmanuel Lartei Lartey 13-0-1, 7KO’s).
Latei Lartey also knows that a victory here will put his name back into the mix for national acclaim. The Ghanaian warrior has defeated the likes of Sidney Siqueira (20-7-1, 11KO’s) and Kaiser Mabuza (24-9-3, 15KO’s) and looks use his experience to put the coveted title bout around his waist.
In the eight round co-feature of the evening, undefeated super middleweight Derek “Take it to the Bank” Webster (13-0, 7KO’s) looks for his fourteenth straight victory as a pro when he takes on veteran upset artist Darnell Boone (19-19-3, 8KO’s).
If heavyweights are your bag, then you won’t want to miss “the battle of Newark” as Tyyab Beale (7-3-1, 3KO’s) is set to go toe-to-toe over six rounds with cross town rival Aaron “The Animal” Kinch (4-0, 1KO). Beale showed the heart of a champion in his last bout in the very same arena back in October as he had to get off the canvas to score a crowd pleasing 3rd round technical knockout of Montgomery, Alabama’s Kevin Howard (3-8-1, 1KO). Kinch scored a majority decision against the very same Howard in April. In his last bout, he captured a split decision victory over a debuting Aaron Bratton in Reading, PA.
Brooklyn, New York welterweight prospect Scott Burrell (6-1, 5KO’s) looks to his keep his three fight win streak alive when he battles it out over six rounds with the always dangerous Edgardo Torres (2-1, 2KO’s) of Vineland, New Jersey.
Matchmaker Renee Aiken is still looking to find two fighters who have the guts to get in with fellow undefeated Newark, New Jersey prospects that are well known to the area in Newark middleweight John “The Apollo Kid” Thompson (10-0,3KO’s) and lightweight Wanzell Ellison (7-0-1, 4KO’s).
New York featherweight Pete Reyes looks to make a splash in his professional debut when he squares off against Camden New Jersey’s Oscar Pagan (0-1)
Joseph Crosby (6-2, 1KO), the brother of Zab and Daniel Judah, will face Newark’s own Fitzgerald Johnson (3-7, 1KO) in a four round contest.
Someone’s “O” must go, as two winless welterweights look for their first victory as professionals when Shakir Aquel Dunn (0-1) of Newark squares off against Tobias Molina (0-1).
In a four round middleweight contest, Anthony “Sweet Tooth” Jones (2-0-1) will take on Washington DC’s Issa Coulibaly (0-3).
Rounding out the loaded card will be a four round cruiserweight contest as Philly cruiserweight Maurice Amaro (1-5) swaps punches with Queens, New York’s Abdellah Smith (2-4,2KO’s).

QUOTES FROM TODAY’S ANTHONY OGOGO PRESS CONFERENCE IN LONDON TO OFFICIALLY ANNOUNCE SIGNING WITH GOLDEN BOY PROMOTIONS & DISCUSS PROFESSIONAL CAREER
LONDON (January 16, 2013) – Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer hosted a press conference today at The Mayfair Hotel in London, England to officially announce the signing of 2012 British Olympic Bronze Medalist Anthony Ogogo to an exclusive promotional agreement. Media packed the room where Schaefer, Ogogo and Ogogo’s manager/agent Dean Baker (Head of Boxing at Wasserman Media Group) spoke about Anthony turning professional and his immediate and long-term future in the sport.
Anthony Ogogo, 2012 British Olympic Bronze Medalist
“I’m thrilled about turning professional. I can’t wait to get started. I knew Richard Schaefer was the guy that was going to help make my dreams come true. When we first met, we got along so well and I knew he shared my ambition to succeed.
“I want to be a superstar. I want to become the best British middleweight fighter of all time. I want to be knighted one day. I want to be ‘Sir Anthony.’ I know I have massive aspirations of what I want to be in my life and when I told Richard Schaefer, he said ‘OK, let’s do it.’
“I have already overcome a lot in my career with my shoulder injury and rehabilitation 18 months ago. Then my mom became seriously ill and I left to go to her side. I was in so much pain before the Olympics, but I did what I had to do. I was determined to win in spite of it all.
“I believe in my talents and in the people sitting with me here today and I know I’ll become the best British middleweight of all time.
“By signing with Golden Boy Promotions, it opens so many doors. I will have opportunities to fight all over the world on big cards, on big networks and train with top athletes. I look forward to going to train with guys like Golden Boy’s Middleweight World Champion Peter Quillin and sparring in Los Angeles and all over the world, but I will keep my main headquarters in England.
“I don’t think all of this will seem real until I’m walking up the steps to the ring on fight night. I know I have what it takes to succeed as a professional fighter. I’m athletic, I have fast hands, good foot work and my strength of character is different than other people. I went through a lot personally during the Olympics, but I was able to move past my personal problems and still win the Bronze Medal for the United Kingdom. It is that unique ability inside me that I know will help me as a professional fighter.”
Richard Schaefer, CEO of Golden Boy Promotions:
“I feel like we have something very special with Anthony Ogogo. He is already a star in the United Kingdom and we are going to make him a crossover superstar in the United States too.
“He’s a very special talent, well-spoken, clean cut, charismatic and a great fighter. If you have the right talent and charisma like Anthony has, the sky is the limit.
“Our goal is to have him fight regularly in the United Kingdom and in the United States. We want him to fight four times in each country, eight times a year.
“We want to take him from his first fight to a world championship and make him the best in boxing. Our goal is to make him a world champion like we have with Adrien Broner and Abner Mares.”
“We are hoping he can make his professional debut at the end of April or beginning of May, but we’re not sure if it will be in the United Kingdom or United States.
Dean Baker, Ogogo’s Manager/Agent, Head of Wasserman Media Group:
“We want to thank Richard Schaefer, Oscar De La Hoya and Golden Boy Promotions for sharing our vision for Anthony and his future. We are all on board to make him a crossover superstar and are excited about his future.
“I’ve known Anthony for a long time and he is one of the most charismatic, charming and talented guys I’ve ever met.”

Lewkowicz Signs Oscar Escandon to Promotional Agreement
Promoter Sampson Lewkowicz proudly announces the signing of undefeated Colombian super bantamweight Oscar Escandon (21-0, 14 KOs) to a promotional agreement.
28-year-old Escandon began boxing at the age of 10 under the guidance of his father, Luis Alfonso Escandon. He had over 200 amateur bouts and proudly represented his homeland in the 2004 Summer Olympics in Beijing.
As a professional, Escandon won the WBC Latino Bantamweight Championship in March of 2011, he with a KO 3 of his countryman Luis Felipe Cuadrado.
Escandon enjoys tremendous popularity in his hometown, the Department of Tolima’s capital city of Ibague, in the central region of the Colombian Andes, about 130 miles from Bogota. He is the first athlete from Tolima to represent Colombia in an Olympiad.
Expectations there are very high that he will become the first world champion from the interior of Colombia, thus changing the cycle of Colombian boxing world champions who have exclusively came from the coastal region.
Escandon and manager Francisco Herrera say they’re excited to finally be working with a well-respected name like Sampson Boxing and look at it as the golden opportunity they’ve been waiting for.
“I have been waiting my whole career for someone to get me the fights I want and Sampson is the one who will do it. I have put all my trust in him,” said Escandon.
“Oscar is more than ready for this,” added Herrera. “We will now be looking to face (WBA Champion) Guillermo Rigondeaux or (WBO Champ) Nonito Donaire. These are the level of fights Oscar belongs in.”
“It’s an honor to have his trust and I will not disappoint him,” said an excited Sampson Lewkowicz, moments after the signing. “Oscar is a tremendous talent, who has been waiting for the right opportunities. I will now secure those opportunities for him and show the world what he’s made of. This is a notice to the boxing world that Oscar Escandon is coming.”
