TICKET ALERT!!!! GHOST TOWN PROMOTIONS PRESENTS “WARRIORS CONQUEST” FEBRUARY 16, LONGMONT, CO

LONGMONT, CO (January 4, 2013) Ghost Town Promotions presents WARRIORS CONQUEST II, an evening of action packed professional boxing, set for Saturday, FEBRUARY 16 at the Longmont Athletic Club in Longmont Colorado.

Advance tickets for WARRIORS CONQUEST II, priced at $45, $35 and $25, may be purchased by calling 720-296-6176 or 303-772-4700.

Headlining WARRIORS CONQUEST II is a sensational eight round welterweight clash between hometown fan favorite Raul “EL Chino” Carrillo and Cesar “The Rattlesnake” Holguin of Grand Junction, Colorado.

Carrillo, 10-1-0 (6KO’s), is coming off a dominant six round decision over Josh Torres on JUNE 30, 2012 at the Boulder County Fairgrounds. The win was an excellent comeback from his hard-fought first defeat against world ranked Robert Frankel over ten rounds on FEBRUARY 17, 2012.

Sporting a record of 9-3-1 with three stoppages, Holguin returns to battle following a two-year absence, most recently fighting to a draw against Corey Alarcon on OCTOBER 29, 2010.

WARRIORS CONQUEST II is co-headlined by a six round welterweight tilt between highly regarded Fort Collins, Colorado, native John Ryan Grimaldo and Juan Santiago of Denver, Colorado.

A professional for two years, the hard-hitting Grimaldo, 8-2-0 (5KO’s) returns following a controversial stoppage at the hands of undefeated prospect Mikael Zewski on JUNE 9, 2012 in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Prior to the Zewski fight, Grimaldo had won two in a row, both battles taking place in El Paso, Texas.

Veteran Santiago, 13-9-1 (8KO’s), has fought a long list of undefeated prospects and will look to get back on the winning track fighting in his home state for the first time in over two years.

The undercard at WARRIORS CONQUEST II will feature separate bouts involving welterweight veteran Marvin Cordova Jr., 21-2-1 (11KO’s), come-backing cruiserweight Carlos Raul Ibarra, 7-3-1 (4KO’s) and lightweight Daniel Calzada, 5-6-1 (2KO’s) of Dona Ana, New Mexico.

Additional information on this sensational card will be announced shortly. The Longmont Athletic Club is located at 10 Mountain View Avenue in Longmont, Colorado. Doors on the evening of the event will open at 6pm with the first bell at 7pm.

The Official Public Weigh-In will take place at 7pm on Friday, FEBRUARY 16 at Deli Cioso Mexican Restaurant, 1217 Main Street in Longmont.

American Heavyweight Skipp Scott Ready for Big Test

One of the “hidden giants” on the American heavyweight scene, Houston, Texas big man Skipp “Strictly Business” Scott (15-1, 10 KOs) will begin to come out of the shadows on Thursday, January 10, as he takes a big step up in competition.

Fighting in one of the 10-round featured bouts at promoter Lou Savarese’s “Rumble on the Bayou” event at the Bayou City Event Center in Houston, the 6′ 8″ 255-lb Scott will face Trinidad And Tobago veteran Kertson “Warrior” Manswell (23-6, 17 KOs) for the vacant World Boxing Foundation International Heavyweight title.

Blessed with God-given athleticism and power, the 34-year-old Scott has been a work in progress in boxing. After losing his pro debut, he’s won 15 straight against opponents chosen to help him hone his craft.

Manswell represents Scott’s toughest foe to date, as he’s been in the ring with several notable heavyweights and gone the distance with former World Heavyweight Champion Ruslan Chagaev and top contender Cedric Boswell. Although he has come up short against some of the best in the division, 36-year-old Manswell has mowed down all other competition. He was undefeated for the first six years of his career and even competed in the world-famous Prize Fighter heavyweight tournament.

“If Skipp is ready to start climbing the ladder, he needs to get past an opponent like this in impressive fashion,” said Scott’s promoter, Kerry Daigle of Keeppunching Entertainment. “Manswell has a lot more experience than Skipp and will be coming into Houston to win. We’re looking at this fight as a very important test of where Skipp stands in his career.”

This fight represents several firsts for Scott. It is his first 10-round bout and his first for a professional title. It is also his first against an opponent not from the USA.

“Skipp didn’t have much of an amateur career, only three fights, so this will be his first real taste of international competition as a boxer,” continued Daigle. “We’re going to find out quickly how he reacts to real pressure and what he can do against a big, strong opponent looking to knock him out. We’re confident but by no means looking past this fight.”

Scott had an 80-fight kickboxing career prior to switching over to boxing and was ranked #3 in the nation and #2 in Texas at one point, so he’s been in important fights before, but none using only his fists.

“The American heavyweight division is really looking for someone to stand up and take over and Skipp is a giant, powerful and extremely athletic big man with the heart of a true warrior. We’ve been watching him develop for years and hopefully this fight will be his announcement to the world that America has a new heavyweight to watch.”

The Bayou City Event Center is located at 9401 Knight Road in Houston. On fight night, doors open at 6:00 pm and the first fight is at 7:30 pm. There is LIMITED SEATING, so be sure to reserve your seats early. Tickets are priced at Gold Seats: $100.00, Silver Seats $75.00, General Admission Category A: $50.00, General Admission Category B: $35.00 and General Admission: $25.00. THE FANS SPEAK! THE 2012 TOP RANK AWARDS GO TO…

LAS VEGAS, NEV. (January 4, 2013) — Boxing fans from around the world avoided falling off the Fistical Cliff by doing their civic duty.

Fans were invited to vote for their favorite nominees in the 2012 Top Rank Facebook poll (www.facebook.com/trboxing) and boy did they respond. The categories were Fighter of the Year, Fight of the Year and Round of the Year.

FIGHTER OF THE YEAR: NONITO DONAIRE

http://www.toprank.com/videos/nonito-donaire

In a breakout year for the Filipino Flash, Donaire (31-1, 30 KOs) extended his 11-year winning streak to 30 bouts by winning all four of his junior featherweight world title fights. On February 4, Donaire captured the vacant WBO 122-pound title, winning a gritty split-decision battle over former world champion Wilfredo Vazquez, Jr. He unified the title on July 7, winning a dominant unanimous decision over defending IBF champion Jeffrey Mathebula. He followed that with another legacy-making victory, a ninth-round stoppage of WBC Diamond Belt super bantamweight champion Toshiaki Nishioka, on October 16, ending Nishioka’s eight-year, 16-bout winning streak. He finished the year with a spectacular third-round knockout victory of Méxican icon Jorge Arce on December 15. And he did it while voluntarily making himself available for random blood and urine testing everyday of the year.

FIGHT OF THE YEAR: PACQUIAO vs. MÁRQUEZ 4

http://www.toprank.com/videos/fight-of-the-year-pacquiao-vs-marquez-4

This was the eagerly-anticipated Act 4 of their fistoric rivalry where both gladiators promised a definitive conclusion — and they delivered. Going mano a mano and toe-to-toe, their fight produced non-stop fireworks and drama for as long as it lasted. The world held its breath as Pacquiao, the Fighter of the Decade, and Márquez, arguably the greatest Méxican fighter of his era, threw every weapon they possessed at each other. And while the fight did produce a definitive ending it also left its fans hungry for yet another encore.

ROUND OF THE YEAR: PACQUIAO vs. MÁRQUEZ 4 – ROUND 5

http://www.toprank.com/videos/round-of-the-year-pacquiao-vs-marquez-4-5

Pacquiao had been knocked down in the third round — the first time he had ever hit the canvas in their series — and he returned the favor knocking Márquez down in this round. After that it was all out war which each of them launching and landing bombs in the most action-packed round of the 42 they have fought.

Top Rank would like to thank everyone who participated and wish you a happy and healthy New Year. We cannot wait to see what 2013 brings us!

BRANDON GONZALES EAGERLY PREPARING TO DEFEND UNDEFEATED RECORD AGAINST DON MOUTON

Sherman Oaks, Calif. (January 3) – Undefeated Super Middleweight Brandon Gonzales, 28, is coming off a dominant victory by unanimous decision over Elie Augustama in which he battled through a substantial gash over his left eye that severely hindered his vision for the last few rounds of the fight.

“I learned about patience and sticking to the game plan and knowing that I can fight through adversity if necessary,” Gonzales said of his bloody cut. “It showed I could carry out a fight regardless of the circumstances.”

The Sacramento native, who is training with Virgil Hunter (also trainer of Andre Ward), is prepared to exhibit the same heart and determination against his upcoming challenger.

Mouton, 34, has momentum on his side as well, as the Houston native has won all of his fights since returning to the ring after a three-year hiatus, with all the wins coming in 2012. After stunning Jesse Luna with a TKO in his first fight since 2009, Mouton has won two bouts, including a knockout of Samuel Clarkson in his most recent fight.

As Mouton has garnered plenty of hype in his recent return to boxing – his opponents had a very respectable combined 40-7-1 record – Gonzales is prepared to face him at his best.

“[Don’s] a tough fighter and he comes to fight. He’s given a lot of guys trouble,” Gonzales said. “I definitely know he’s coming with the mindset this is his opportunity and he’ll be fully prepared. This is my first fight in seven months and I’m eager to get back into it and showcase my skills on a platform like ESPN.”

Promoter Dan Goossen says “This is the type of fight that can establish Brandon as a bonafide world rated super middleweight.”

The bout is being promoted by Goossen Tutor Promotions in association with
M & H Promotions. The event will be televised on ESPN2 (9:00PM EST/6:00PM PST) and ESPN Deportes and held at the Pueblo Pavilion in Santa Fe, New Mexico.

WBC INTERIM SUPER LIGHTWEIGHT WORLD CHAMPION LUCAS MATTHYSSE TO DEFEND HIS TITLE AGAINST MIKE DALLAS JR. ON JANUARY 26 AT HARD ROCK HOTEL & CASINO IN LAS VEGAS

lucas-matthysse
LOS ANGELES, January 3 – SHOWTIME CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING® will return with hard hitting action on Saturday, January 26 at The Joint at Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas live on SHOWTIME® (10:00 p.m. ET/PT delayed on the West Coast). The tripleheader will be headlined by Argentinean knockout artist Lucas Matthysse defending his WBC Interim Super Lightweight World Championship against Mike “The Silent Assassin” Dallas Jr.

In co-featured bouts, welterweight warriors Selcuk Aydin and Jesus Soto Karass will collide in a significant non-title attraction while rising undefeated junior middleweight contender Jermell Charlo takes on an opponent to be named in a 10-round junior middleweight attraction.

Featured in a non- televised bout will be a 12-round WBO Asia Pacific Junior Welterweight title fight between champion Chad Bennett and challenger Ben Ankrah.

This stellar SHOWTIME tripleheader is presented by Golden Boy Promotions and sponsored by Corona and AT&T with Matthysse vs. Dallas being presented in association with Arano Box Promotions and Goossen Tutor Promotions, Aydin vs. Soto Karass being presented in association with Arena Box Promotions and Bennett vs. Ankrah being presented in association with Millennium Events. The SHOWTIME CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING telecast begins live on SHOWTIMEat 10:00 p.m. ET/PT (delayed on the West Coast) with preliminary fights live on SHOWTIME EXTREME® beginning at 8:00 p.m. ET/PT (delayed on the West Coast).

Tickets priced at $150, $100, $75, $50 and $25, plus applicable taxes, fees and services charges, along with a limited number of VIP suite seats priced at $125, go on sale on Friday, January 4 at noon PT and may be purchased at the Hard Rock Hotel Box Office, all Ticketmaster locations, online at www.Ticketmaster.com or by phone at (800) 745-3000.

After fighting under the radar for several years, Argentinean strongman Lucas Matthysse (32-2, 30 KO’s) began breaking through on the international scene in 2010-11 after controversial decision losses to Zab Judah and Devon Alexander, which many ringside observers believe he won. Following those defeats, he decided to take things out of the judges’ hands. What followed were four consecutive knockout wins, including a 2012 finish of Humberto Soto in June and a 10th round TKO of Ajose Olusegun, the latter victory earning him the WBC Interim Super Lightweight title that he will defend on January 26.

One of California’s top young talents, Bakersfield’s Mike “The Silent Assassin” Dallas Jr. (19-2-1, 8 KO’s) has learned from his experiences in the ring over the last four-plus years. After bouncing back from losses to Josesito Lopez and Mauricio Herrera in 2011 with wins against Miguel Gonzalez and Javier Castro in 2012, he’s ready to make his move in 2013. The 26-year-old Dallas can make an emphatic statement to the boxing world with a win over Matthysse at the end of next month.

A native of Turkey who fights out of Hamburg, Germany, hard-nosed battler Selcuk Aydin (23-1, 17 KO’s) has long been one of the top European fighters in the world, winning European, WBC International, and WBC Silver titles. In July of 2012, Aydin returned to fight in the United States for the first time in three years and gave Robert Guerrero a grueling 12-round battle before losing a decision in their WBC Interim Welterweight World Championship bout. On January 26, the 29-year-old is back stateside and looking to take out perennial contender Jesus Soto Karass.

Highly respected by his peers and a growing fan base that appreciates his work ethic and aggressive fighting style, Los Mochis, Mexico’s Jesus Soto Karass (26-8-3, 17 KO’s) has paid his dues fighting the best competition possible over the years and is finally starting to get his time in the spotlight. An 11 year pro, the 30-year-old has won two of his last three bouts, with the only loss coming in a Fight of the Year candidate against Marcos Maidana in September of 2012. Knowing Soto Karass’ style, once all is said and done, his bout with Aydin may receive that same consideration.

After putting together three big wins in 2012, Houston’s Jermell Charlo (19-0, 9 KO’s) is looing forward to topping that total in 2013, and he begins that quest on January 26. The winner of bouts over Chris Chatman, Denis Douglin and Dashon Johnson this year, the talented 22-year-old known as the “Iron Man” will be ready for whoever is placed across the ring from him in the SHOWTIME opener.

Fighting out of Newcastle, Australia, Chad “Hollywood” Bennett (30-4-3, 21 KO’s) has been on a tear of late, winning six straight over the last two years, with five of those victories coming by knockout. The current WBO Asia Pacific Junior Welterweight Champion, the 39-year-old Bennett will return to fight in the United States for the first time since 2010 to defend his title against Accra, Ghana’s Ben Ankrah (17-11, 8 KO’s). A 12-year veteran of the sport, the 33-year-old Ankrah has won six of his last seven, and considering that he has ended five of those victories by knockout, expect some explosive action when he squares off against Bennett.

A complete slate of undercard bouts will be announced shortly. GUERRERO vs BERTO VOTED 2012 “FIGHT OF THE YEAR” BY THE WBC

Guerrero_Berto_Weigh In
January 3, 2013 – The WBC board of governors have voted Robert “The Ghost” Guerrero vs. Andre Berto as their 2012 “Fight of the Year”. Guerrero, a four-division and six-time world champion, and former two-time world champion Berto, engaged in an all out slugfest for twelve rounds. Berto survived knockdowns by Guerrero in rounds one and two, and showed tremendous heart fighting tough to the final bell.

“First I want to thank my Lord and savior Jesus Christ,” said Guerrero. “Anytime you’re recognized by the WBC in a fight of the year candidate, the fans are the ones that benefit. When fighters step in the ring we put our lives on the line and it’s rewarding to be recognized for doing so. Next I want to show gratitude toward the WBC governing board and special thanks to José and Mauricio Sulaimán for selecting Guerrero vs. Berto as their “Fight of the Year” in 2012. In addition, I’m very grateful to Ruben Guerrero, Bob Santos and Luis Decubas Jr.”

“I also want to show appreciation to Andre Berto for being a true warrior, because without his courage and heart, we wouldn’t have had the epic showdown that people are still talking about today. Lastly I want to thank Golden Boy Promotions and HBO for airing this fight to all the fans around the world. I’m looking forward to a great 2013.”

HIGH-VOLTAGE DOUBLE HEADER TOPS NBC SPORTS NETWORK FIGHT NIGHT SEASON OPENER

UNCASVILLE, CT – NBC Sports Network’s Fight Night boxing series kicks off its second season on Saturday, January 19th, with a high-voltage double header. The nationally televised event will be shown live from the Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, CT, beginning 9PM ET.

In the Internationally flavored main event, light heavyweights Gabriel Campillo, 21-4-1, 7 KOs, of Madrid, Spain, meets Sergey Kovalev, 18-0-1, 15 KOs, Chelyabinsk, Russia, in an compelling 10-rounder. The bout looks like a classic boxer-puncher match up, with Kovalev bringing the power while Campillo provides the finesse.

Campillo is a former WBA light heavyweight champion, who came within a whisker of winning the IBF crown against Tavoris Cloud last year. Cloud retained his title by controversial decision, but most believed slick southpaw Campillo deserved the victory. “The Handsome Man” will look to bounce back by schooling the hard-punching “Krusher”, but this main event is a toss-up.

Kovalev has been on the rise, knocking out almost everyone put in his path. He hasn’t been extended to the final bell in more than two years, and will certainly be looking to add another KO to his resume, especially one with a name as distinguished as Campillo’s.

In the 10-round co-feature, Elvin Ayala, 26-5-1, 12 KOs, takes on Curtis Stevens, 22-3, 16 KOs, in a battle between two middleweights hungry for the spotlight. Their clash before a nationally televised audience should provide them with the perfect opportunity to shine.

Ayala, of New Haven, CT, is a well-travelled vet with six straight wins, three of them by KO. He stopped John Mackey at the Mohegan Sun in his last fight, and before that, pitched a near shutout on national TV against Eric Mitchell at Foxwoods, also in CT. Against Stevens, Ayala will again have the home-state advantage.

Curtis Stevens, of Brownsville, Brooklyn, is a rising star who’s kayoed four of his last six opponents. His most recent foe, Romaro Johnson, didn’t make it out of the first round. Another of his KO victims was then-undefeated Pitor Wilczewski, whom Stevens starched in three rounds.

Ayala and Stevens are both boxer-punchers with something to prove, and should provide each other with a serious test.

With these two excellent bouts on tap, and their likelihood to produce knockouts, boxing fans are certain to be the big winners on this busy night of televised boxing. With other cable boxing shows scheduled for later in the evening, these excellent Fight Night wars should be settled long before the other programs even begin.

In the co-feature, Elvin Ayala, 26-5-1, 12 KO’s, battles Curtis Stevens, 22-3, 16 KO’s, in a 10-round middleweight contest. WealthTV Makes Major Strides in Boxing

livebox
SAN DIEGO, CA –January 3, 2013 – WealthTV’s live boxing programming efforts for 2012 have been recognized by the Boxing Writers Association of America, BWAA, and by ESPN’s Dan Rafael, arguably the leading authority on boxing. The BWAA recently nominated six fights for Fight of the Year candidates. Two of the six fights were featured live on WealthTV, namely Brian “Hawaiian Punch” Viloria v. Hernan “Tyson” Marquez and Roman “Chocolatito” Gonzalez v. Juan Francisco Estrada. (Of the remaining four fights, one was featured on Showtime and three were featured on HBO, including the Manny Pacquiao v. Juan Manual Marquez IV fight.) The BWAA also nominated world champion Brian Viloria for Fighter of the Year. Viloria, who was featured on WealthTV’s Fight Night on November 17, unified the WBO and WBA Flyweight World Championship with a victory over Hernan Marquez.

According to Jack Hirsch, president of the Boxing Writers Association of America, “When people think about great fights they usually associate them with only HBO and Showtime. However, one look at the Boxing Writers Association of America’s ballot for the 2012 Fight of the Year should dispel that. Two of the six contests on the ballot (Roman Gonzalez – Juan Francisco Estrada and Brian Viloria – Hernan Marquez) were telecast by WealthTV.”

ESPN’s Dan Rafael, perhaps the most well respected authority on boxing, named two time WealthTV headliner David Price (15-0-0) as ESPN’s Prospect of the Year. Price, a 6’ 8”, 250 lb undefeated heavyweight has been featured twice in recent months on WealthTV. On October 13th the undefeated Price made blazing fast work of Audley Harrison – dropping Harrison in 82 seconds into the first round to finish the contest. Price returned on WealthTV on November 30th to put a potentially career-ending second round finishing loss on an outmatched Matt Skelton. Rafael’s pick for Prospect of the Year is highly anticipated by boxing fans for Rafael’s astute ability to pick young prospects. David Price joins a prestige list that includes past inductees Miguel Cotto, Amir Khan, Andre Berto, Canelo Alverez, among others.

Rafael’s naming of two-time WealthTV headliner David Price as Prospect of the Year combined with the BWAA recognitions, gives WealthTV reason to feel good about its boxing efforts in 2012. Dan Rafael of ESPN summed thing up, “With two Fight of the Year candidates and being the US outlet for Price, WealthTV had a great year.”

For 2013, WealthTV will be featuring 40 to 60 bouts according to network executive Charles Herring and the quality of the events is only improving. One of the first live events for 2013 will see undefeated British heavyweight David Price challenging one of America’s best heavyweights, Tony “The Tiger” Thompson. Thompson, a proven world Heavyweight title challenger is currently the No. 2 rated American by BoxRec. The fight, scheduled to take place on February 23, live and exclusively on WealthTV, has received the highest rating from BoxRec, earning five stars for the matchup. In addition to the Price v. Thompson bout scheduled for February, WealthTV has agreements in place for additional bouts featuring David Price.

“When WealthTV first announced it would telecast boxing events the consensus was that it would be an occasional show featuring no more than moderate talent. However, it is now quite obvious that WealthTV is a major player in the sport. WealthTV has consistently telecast some of the best fights and fighters in the world. It has delivered everything it promised,” stated Jack Hirsch of the BWAA.

“Our boxing staff has been searching the world for the best fighters, regardless of weight-class and nationality. We don’t feature or promote a small stable of boxers, but rather work with a number of promoters, seeking out the very best boxing events. We’re extremely proud that our featured boxers and fights have received recognition by the BWAA and Dan Rafael of ESPN,”,stated Charles Herring, president of WealthTV.

In addition to its world-class championship fights, WealthTV will be featuring the fast-paced and adrenaline pumping “Prizefighter: Welterweights III” matches on January 19th. WealthTV also shows first airings and encore fights every Thursday night at 10PM EST.

WealthTV’s Fight Night can be seen on WealthTV nationally on Verizon FiOS TV channel 169 and 669 in HD, AT&T U-Verse TV channels 470 and 1470 in HD, along with over 100 cable systems across the country as well as on line viewing on numerous connected devices and via www.wealthtv.com.

GABRIEL ROSADO: NO EXCUSES FOR GOLOVKIN, WE’RE FIGHTING AT 160!!!

PHILADELPHIA, PA (January 2, 2013) World ranked challenger “King” Gabriel Rosado was incredulous when he discovered that his world championship bout against WBA/IBO Middleweight World Champion Gennady “GGG” Golovkin set for JANUARY 19 at Madison Square Garden in New York City would be fought at a catch weight of 158.

“The first I heard about the catch weight was at the media lunch on December 1, I never asked for it, that was my advisor Russell Peltz’s idea” said Rosado. “I’m happy Russell is looking out for my best interests but we’re fighting at 160.”

“Golovkin is the champion and out of respect to him and towards the sport of boxing we will fight at the middleweight limit of 160 pounds. When I beat him, I don’t want any excuses about the extra two pounds he had to lose. I will beat him at his best, fair and square.” Even though Rosado looks physically much bigger than Golovkin, he has fought the majority of his professional bouts at the junior middleweight limit of 154 pounds.

“The old-timers didn’t need any catch weights, they were real men. Middleweight champions fight at 160 and that’s what I want.”

In accordance with Rosado’s wishes the contract for the world championship bout will be amended to the middleweight limit of 160.

Said Tom Loeffler of K2 Promotions; “I was surprised when I got the call to increase the weight to 160. I have to give Rosado a lot of credit, he is very confident and that is what makes this such a great fight. It should be the fight of the night on a great show and tickets have been selling very well.”

“GOLOVKIN VS. ROSADO” which will be televised live on HBO Boxing After Dark®, beginning at 9:45 p.m. ET/PT, is a 12-round battle between WBA/IBO Middleweight World Champion Gennady Golovkin and world ranked challenger “King” Gabriel Rosado set for Saturday, January 19 at The Theatre at Madison Square Garden, ‘The Mecca of Boxing” in New York City.

Promoted by Top Rank Incorporated and K2 Promotions, the World Championship Tripleheader also features Orlando “SIRI” Salido defending his WBO Featherweight Title against undefeated No. 1 contender Mikey Garcia and two-time WBO Junior Lightweight Champion Roman “Rocky” Martinez clashing with No. 1 contender Juan Carlos “Mini” Burgos.

Remaining tickets, priced at $200, $100, $50 and $25, are currently available for purchase at the Madison Square Garden Box Office, all Ticketmaster outlets, Ticketmaster charge by phone (866-858-0008) and online at www.ticketmaster.com or www.thegarden.com.

Triumphantly returning to the Times Union Center, world ranked contender Hanks of Newark, New Jersey, sports a record of 21-0-0 (14KO’s). In his first appearance at the debut Star Boxing event in Albany on FEBRUARY 4, the 29-year-old Hanks looked dominant in stopping Cuban Rafael Pedro in the second round.

Hanks followed up the knockout of Pedro by halting veteran Marcus Rhode in the first round on APRIL 27 in Miami, Oklahoma. Most recently Hanks won a clear cut unanimous decision over Maurenzo Smith on DECEMBER 6 in Costa Mesa, California.

Hanks is currently ranked #13 by the World Boxing Organization and considered by many in the boxing media as one of the top US based heavyweights.

The 24-year-old Carmack, 12-0-0 (10KO’s), is coming off his career best victory, a devastating first round knockout of perennial contender Carl Davis on NOVEMBER 16 in Chicago, IL. Drilling Davis to the canvas with a battering right cross, Carmack showed world-class power stunning the huge crowd at the UIC Pavilion.

In addition to this sensational heavyweight matchup, Star Boxing will announce an action packed undercard including local fighters; Vincent Miranda and Shawn Miller in separate bouts.

MAJEWSKI, DAVIS COLLIDE IN MIDDLEWEIGHT MAIN EVENT FEB. 23 AT BALLY’S ATLANTIC CITY–LIVE ON GFL

gfl-banner-white
Atlantic City, NJ—Middleweights Patrick Majewski, of Somers Point, NJ, and Jamaal Davis, of Philadelphia, PA, meet the 10-round main event on Saturday evening, Feb. 23, at Bally’s Atlantic City.

The Majewski-Davis contest tops a seven-bout card which begins at 7.30 pm. The show will be streamed live by www.gofightlive.tv.

Majewski (right), 33, has won his last three fights, including a 10-round decision over another Philadelphian, Latif Mundy, last Sept. 29 at Resorts International in Atlantic City.

A pro since 2006, Majewski is 20-1, 13 K0s.

Ranked No. 8 in the world by the World Boxing Council (WBC), Majewski also has defeated Chris Fitzpatrick, of Albany, NY, Jimmy Lubash, of Pittsburgh, PA, Marcus Upshaw, of Jacksonville, FL, Antwon Echols, of Davenport, IA; Joe Gomez, of Bloomfield, NM.

This will mark Majewski’s fifth fight at Bally’s Atlantic City, where he is 4-0.

Majewski is managed by Arnold Robbins and trained by Robbins and Bill Johnson out of the Atlantic City PAL gym.

Davis, 31, is moving up from junior middleweight for this match. He has won his last two fights, a pair of eight-round decisions over Eberto Medina, of Newark, NJ, and Doel Carrasquillo, of Lancaster, PA.
A pro since 2003, Davis (left) is 14-8-1, 6 K0s. This will be Davis’ sixth fight in the 1,500-seat Bally’s Ballroom, where he is 2-2-1, losing only to contenders Gabriel Rosado, of Philadelphia, and Ossie Duran, of Newark, NJ.

Majewski vs. Davis is a contrast in styles. Majewski likes to walk forward and trade while Davis chooses to move a bit and pick his spots. Majewski has the edge in power, Davis in boxing ability.

“This fight is a natural but it took some time to make,” said promoter J Russell Peltz. “It follows the three important steps: First, do the styles match up? Yes. Second, does it lead somewhere? Yes, the winner becomes a player at 160. Third, would I pay to see it? Absolutely!”

Davis is self-managed and trained by Sharron Baker and Nazim Richardson. He works out of the James Shuler Memorial Gym in West Philadelphia.

HEAVYWEIGHT CHAMPION SEMMY SCHILT WINS GLORY 4 TOKYO – HEAVYWEIGHT GRAND SLAM STAR-STUDDED, 16-MAN KICKBOXING TOURNAMENT IN TOKYO

TOKYO, Japan (Dec. 31, 2012) – After four fights in one night, two of which he ended by KO, Karate black belt Semmy Schilt (43-6, 20 KOs) of the Netherlands, emerged as the winner of the highly-anticipated GLORY 4 Tokyo – Heavyweight Grand Slam. Schilt, a fan favorite of this star-studded, 16-man, one-night kickboxing tournament, claimed the $400,000 grand prize and! secured his position as the world’s No. 1 heavyweight kickboxer.

In addition to Schilt, the single-elimination tournament field consisted of numerous other superstars and rising stars, including the likes of legend Peter Aerts (104-31-1, 78 KOs), Remy Bonjasky (78-15, 40 KOs), Gokhan Saki (79-16, 55 KOs), Daniel Ghita (47-8, 36 KOs) and Jamal Ben Saddik (24-1, 19 KOs). Playing out over 15 fights, the tournament saw 8 bouts end by KO or TKO, resulting in a KO ratio of just under 55 percent.

“I’ve won many tournaments, but this is the best ever,” the towering (6-foot-11/2.12 meters)Schilt said afterwards. “It was a hard tournament with some very good fighters and some very hard fights for me and for everyone else. But, all the struggle is worth it to win a competition like this. GLORY is home to the best fighters in the worl! d and I am very proud to be the winner of (the league’s) first-ever Grand Slam tournament.

“This was not just a great New Year’s Eve event, it was a great martial arts event,” said GLORY Chairman Pierre Andurand. “I think that the skill and the courage that we saw in the ring tonight is really what the martial arts are all about. Perhaps it’s a bit of cliché seeing as we are in Tokyo, but I really do think we can say that the fighters tonight embodied the samurai spirit which all martial artists aspire to.”

The tournament’s ‘Best of Three’ rule, designed to eliminate needless injuries, mandated that any fighter who won the first two rounds of a bout would advance to the next stage without having to fight the third and final scheduled round of the bout.

Schilt’s run saw him stop Brice Guidon (28-8, 4 KOs) of France in the first round of the tournament’s first fight! via a pair of heavy right hands. He then outclassed hot prospect Rico Verhoeven (37-7-1, 8 KOs) of the Netherlands to take a decision win under the ‘Best of Three’ rule before meeting Gokhan Saki (79-16, 55 KOs) of the Netherlands in the semifinal stage of the tournament.

Saki, who had KO’d his opponents in the first round of both his Final 16 and quarterfinal stage matches, respectively, tried to do the same to Schilt but couldn’t overcome Schilt’s significant reach advantage.

Saki landed some good shots, but couldn’t get the clean connection he needed in order to seal the deal. The judges declared Schilt the winner under the Best of Three rule and, although Saki bitterly disputed the decision, Schilt advanced to the championship round of the tournament.

In the championship matchup, Schilt met Ghita, who had finished his semifinal fight in j! ust 10 seconds by stopping the giant Ben Saddik with a left kick to the solar plexus. As a result, Ghita was well-rested and less hurt that Schilt, who had persevered through a war with Saki. But near the end of a close first round, Schilt threw a perfectly-timed head kick and connected his shin cleanly across the side of Ghita’s head.

Ghita went down and struggled to beat the referee’s 10-count. He made it to his feet just in time, but the referee determined that he was unsteady on his feet and that the fight should be stopped for Ghita’s own safety, thereby sending Schilt to the winner’s circle.

In the evening’s Superfights, speed and technique reigned supreme. Robin van Roosmalen (38-14-3, 12 KOs), the runner-up in the GLORY 3 Rome ‘Final 8’ lightweight (154 pounds/70 kilograms) eight-man tournament on Nov. 3, was matched with the colorful Japanese character Yuichiro Nagashima (17-6, 12 KOs) and completely dominated him fr! om start to finish.

Nagashima had no answer for Van Roosmalen’s forward pressure and awesome power. He showed a lot of heart in refusing to stay down after being knocked down several times and in some instances literally knocked off his feet with low kicks. Nagashima went the distance, but Van Roosmalen walked away the winner by unanimous decision.

Toshio Matsumoto (38-10-6, 30 KOs) gave Jason ‘Tyson’ Wilnis (19-1-2) a stiff test in their middleweight (185 pounds/84 kilograms) match. The experienced Matsumoto is known as ‘The Knockout Artist’ and he did his moniker proud, demonstrating slick boxing skills and fluid combinations. The younger and more powerful Wilnis took a while to get into the fight but, once he did, his superior conditioning put him in front— and by the final bell he was dominating on his way to a unanimous decision win.

Flyweights Sang Jae Kim of Korea and Mutsuki Ebata (17-1-1) of Japan stole the show with a three-round battle that was non-stop from start to finish. The Japanese fighter was by far the better man but his Korean opponent could not be stopped and refused to lie down. Kim lost a one-sided decision but impressed onlookers with his heart and got a big round of applause from the Japanese arena.

Battle at the Boat Turns 90!

Tacoma, WA (December 28th, 2012) – Promoter, Brian Halquist, thought his days as a boxing promoter were going to slow down now that Joe Hipp had been taken to his shot at the Heavyweight Title and Greg Haugen had been promoted to his 4th world title.

That thought has now been changed.

In 1997, Brian Halquist Productions was contacted by casino manager, Frank Wright, about doing a show at the newly built Emerald Queen Casino (EQC). Call it fate, but Halquist Productions had been contacted a day earlier by Bob Arum’s Top Rank. Arum and company had a problem; 10 days before a scheduled world title fight, the original venue had issues and they were looking for a new home for the Emmett Linton vs. Jose Flores world title fight. Halquist explained the situation to Wright and a few minutes later, Frank called Halquist back and said it’s a go. What better way to promote a show? Linton was a Tacoma native and with some long days in the coming week, the show could be pulled off.

The two faced one problem. The EQC didn’t have a venue at all. That changed later in the day when Wright found a gigantic tent that could fit 2,500 people. Chairs, lighting, seats…. Well an entire venue would be put together in those 10 days and the first Battle at the Boat would be in the books. That was Wednesday July 9th, 1997. Linton would have a no contest and the four round famous Butterbean would treat Northwest boxing fans to a 4th round knockout win over Scott Lindecker. The show was actually called Quarrel at the Queen followed by the next show that was called Slaughter on the Water. When the two planned the third show, both parties agreed that one name would suffice and they went with Battle at the Boat 3, signifying the riverboat that was located right next to the tent.

On January 5th, 2013, The Battle at the Boat will turn 90. Little did anybody know that that first fight would turn 90 16 years later.

Through the past 16 years, Northwest fight fans have been treated to the longest running fight series at any tribal Casino in the U.S.

Over the years, fight fans have seen literally every boxing network in North America that covers boxing, shooting shows out of the EQC including: Showtime, ESPN, ESPN 2, Azteca. Telefuturo, Telemundo – well you get it! Halquist Productions has promoted numerous title fights that can be seen below.

GLORY 4 TOKYO – HEAVYWEIGHT GRAND SLAM OFFICIAL WEIGH IN RESULTS

TOKYO, Japan (Dec. 30, 2012) – All 16 of the superstar heavyweights taking part in the highly-anticipated GLORY 4 Tokyo – Heavyweight Grand Slam, one-night, single-elimination kickboxing tournament hit the scales today, one day before the event at Saitama Super Arena, live on GloryWorldSeries.com (tape delayed broadcast on CBS Sports Network in The U.S.)

The weigh-ins took place at the Sunroute Plaza Hotel in Tokyo. The tournament fighters were joined by the fighters slated for action in the three Superfights that will unfold between each stage of the tournament.

The event represents one-half of a double-header mega-event that will begin with the DREAM 18 Mixed Martia! l Arts (MMA) fight card and continue with the GLORY 4 Tokyo – Heavyweight Grand Slam event. Both shows are being presented by Glory Sports International, parent company of GLORY, which is committed to continuing the tradition of huge, end-of-year shows in Japan.

“It’s going to be a memorable night with a tremendous amount of world-class action,” said GLORY Chairman Pierre Andurand as he presented the tournament fighters to a packed press conference. “We want to revive large-scale shows in Japan and this is the first step towards achieving that goal.”

Heaviest of the tournament fighters was the GLORY Heavyweight Champion and No. 1 tournament seed Semmy Schilt (39-6, 18 KOs) of the Netherlands. The tremendous, 2.12 meters/6-foot-11 Karate black belt hit the scales at 287 pounds/130.2 kilograms and will outweigh his opening-round opponent Brice Guidon (2! 8-7, 4 KOs) of France considerably. Guidon, who already has one loss to Schilt from a fight in Moscow earlier this year, weighed in at 225 pounds/102 kilograms.

The second heaviest fighter was Jamal Ben Saddik (22-0, 19 KOs), the young Moroccan heavyweight who has already been likened to Schilt, thanks to being almost as tall as him. Ben Saddik, the second-youngest fighter in the tournament at 22 years old, weighed in at 284 pounds/128.8 kilograms.

He faces the hard-hitting No. 6 tournament seed Errol ‘The Bonecrusher’ Zimmerman (76-16-1, 41 KOs) of Suriname, who hit the scales at 253 pounds/114.8 kilograms. Zimmerman will be the lighter and shorter man in the fight, but he has unbelievable power in his right hand and can KO anybody with a single shot.

Gokhan Saki (77-15, 53 KOs), the tournament’s No. 2 seed, hit the scales at 228 pounds/103.4 kilos. Possibly the most explosive fighter in the tournament, he faces Japane! se brawler Raomoru, who weighed in at a slightly heavier 230 pounds /104.2 kilograms.

No. 3 seed Daniel “The Savage Samurai” Ghita (44-7, 34 KOs) of Romania tipped the scales at 238 pounds/108 kilograms for his opening round match with Brazilian opponent Jhonata Diniz (7-2). At 21 years old, Diniz is the youngest and least experienced fighter in the tournament but has impressed his coaches at Golden Glory. He hit the scales at 237.5 pounds/107.8 kilograms.

Aerial attack artist and No. 4 seed Remy “The Flying Gentleman” Bonjasky (77-14, 40 KOs) of the Netherlands returned to the ring in Oct. after an absence of nearly three years and took a win over the very tough Anderson ’Braddock’ Silva to prove that he still has all his old magic. Bonjasky weighed in at 243 pounds /110.2 kilograms.

Facing Bonjask! y is Filip Verlinden (38-6, 17 KOs), a Belgian Muay Thai technician who has generated a lot of excitement among seasoned observers. Verlinden, who hit the scales at 205 pounds/93.1 kilograms, is extremely fast and has very strong boxing skills, making for an interesting clash of styles with the high-kicking Bonjasky.

All-time great and No. 5 seed Peter Aerts (104-30-1, 78 KOs) of the Netherlands weighed in at 231 pounds/105 kilograms for his First 16 tournament round fight with Mourad Bouzidi (73-19, 33 KOs), who touched down at 215 pounds/97.5 kilograms. An added twist to this fight is that Aerts and Bouzidi are not only good friends, but also long-time training partners who know each other’s styles intimately.

No. 8 and final seed Sergei Kharitonov (22-7, 12 KOs) of Russia wandered onto the scales with his customary expressionless calm and produced a readout of 264.5 pounds/120 kilograms. He faces 23-year-old fast-risin! g star Rico Verhoeven (37-6-1, 8 KOs) of the Netherlands, who weighed in at 255 pounds/115.8 kilograms.

Anderson ‘Braddock’ Silva (32-8-1, 22 KOs), Brazil’s top heavyweight kickboxer, weighed in at 243 pounds/110.2 kilograms and looks to build on the respect he earned for performances against Badr Hari and Bonjasky earlier this year. He faces Igor Jurkovic, who weighed in at 220 pounds/99.8 kilograms. Jurkovic is a sparring partner of fellow Croatian Mirko ‘Cro Cop’ Filipovic.

Robin van Roosmalen (37-14-3, 12 KO’s), the runner-up in last month’s GLORY 3 Rome ‘Final 8’ lightweight (154 pounds/70 kilograms) tournament, weighed in at 154 pounds/69.9 kilograms today as did his Superfight opponent, the infamous cos-play aficionado Guacharo ‘Jienotsu’ Nagashima (17-5, 12 KO’s). True to form, Nagashima, was dressed outrageously in one of his manga-inspired costumes, complete with a bright blue wig.

Jason ‘Tyson’ Wilnis (18-1-2) weighed in at 185 pounds/84 kilograms for his Superfight with the very difficult and very experienced Toshio Matsumoto (38-9-6, 30 KO). Known as ‘The Knockout Artist,’ Matsumoto weighed in at 187 pounds/84.9 kilograms.

Finally, two very accomplished young fighters in the shape of Japan’s Mutsuki Ebata (16-1-1) and South Korea’s Sang Jae Kim weighed in at 116.5 pounds/52.9 kilograms and 116 pounds/52.5 kilograms, respectively, then faced off ahead of what promises to be a thrillingly fast and technical Superfight.

The winner of the GLORY 4 Tokyo – Heavyweight Grand Slam tournament, who will have defeated four opponents at the end of the night, will walk away with a Grand Prize of $400,000. A total of $600,000 in prize money will be awarded.

Manuel Charr calls out David Haye

Heavyweight contender Manuel Charr has big goals for 2013. „I hope to get another chance to fight Vitali Klitschko for the WBC world championship“, states Charr. „I will do whatever it takes to make this fight happen. I can only hope that Vitali doesn’t retire. I heard that David Haye wants to fight him, too. Well, David, we both have the same goal – so let us find out in the ring who should have the right to challenge Klitschko. I am hereby officially challenging you for an elimination bout!“

In his first world title shot in September in Moscow Charr was stopped by a cut in the fourth round. „Vitali didn’t beat me – his doctor did it for him“, says Charr. „I think David Haye said the same thing right after the fight.“ The „Diamond Boy“ has already checked different options to get a rematch against the older Klitschko brother.

After winning the WBC Silver international championship in March, Charr added the WBC Baltic and WBC Mediterranean title to his collection of minor regional belts by knocking out tough contender Konstantin Airich in one round on December 21st. „There are seven minor WBC belts – and I want to unify them all“, says Charr. „Once I have all the ‚small’ belts the only one missing will be the big green and gold title. And that’s what I’m looking for.“

Another chance to secure a title shot would be winning the „WBC World Cup“ which is supposed to start in May. „The WBC is looking for eight contenders for the World Cup“, states Charr. „I am honoured to be on the short list. The winner of the tournament will become the mandatory challenger for the world championship.“

The only problem: The World Cup is scheduled for a whole year which means that Charr – in case he wins the tournament – would be world title challenger in 2014 when Vitali Klitschko will most probably be retired. But the „Diamond Boy“ desperately wants to face Klitschko again to show the world that he can beat the best heavyweight fighter in the world.

„That’s why I am calling out David Haye. I am not ducking anybody and only looking for the biggest challenge out there. David, if you’re reading this, come on and fight me! I’m ready and only waiting for you – let’s get it on!“

Usmanee: In My Heart I Want War

IBF #14-rated super featherweight contender Arash Usmanee (20-0, 10 KOs) is finishing up training at the Club de Boxe de l’Est gym in Montreal, in preparation to face IBF #6 Rances “Kid Blast” Barthelemy (17-0, 11 KOs) on Friday, January 4, 2013, at Stage 305 in the Magic City Casino in Miami, Florida.

Presented by Warriors Boxing and Bad Dog Productions in association with the Magic City Casino, Usmanee vs. Barthelemy will serve as 12-round elimination bout for the IBF’s #2 position and the main event of a show entitled “Friday Night Fights at Magic City Casino” that will also be the year’s debut broadcast of ESPN’s Friday Night Fights (10 PM Eastern on ESPN2 and ESPN Deportes, online through WatchESPN.com, and on smartphones and tablets via the WatchESPN app).

In the co-featured televised bout, Puerto Rican slugger Jonathan “Mantequilla” Gonzalez (15-0-1, 13 KOs) will take on Philadelphia’s Derek “Pooh” Ennis (23-3-1, 13 KOs).

My training is always tip top,” said the Aghani-Canadian. “I’m ready to go. I gotta cut some weight, but it’s in the process. I’m taking my time with it. For me, having to cut weight is ordinary. It seems like no matter what weight I fight at, it’s tough to make. I take it serious because that’s a part of boxing and that’s a battle every boxer should be able to overcome. And it makes the victory taste better when you have to work hard for the win.”

30-year-old Usmanee is a five-time national amateur champion in his adopted home of Canada. Born in Kabul, Afghanistan, he moved to the Canadian Province of Alberta when he was only three years old, after his father was killed in a bombing.

“I moved to Montreal from Alberta. I had five fights there before I moved and things weren’t looking so good. Pro boxing in Alberta is very difficult to do well at. You pretty much have to be a club fighter and I’m not a club fighter. When I got here, my manager, Douggy Berneche, and my trainer, Danielle Trepanier, and I hooked up and the rest is history.”

Usmanee says he had a very wild style before meeting Trepanier, but has really refined his game with his guidance.

“My basics of boxing were lacking, let’s put it that way. For many years, I was left to do what I was good at in the ring, which was to be wild and fight. I did well with it, but not at this level. You have to utilize all your assets and I wasn’t doing that. So Dan said let’s go back to basics and that’s what we did. He took me right back to school and started from the beginning and taught me how to box. I learned a lot of the basics of boxing in the past few years. I basically became a boxer. I had the tennis ball under my chin; my legs were tied up. I looked stupid, but that’s what we had to do.”

Usmanee admits he can still be a little wilder than he should at times. “My style is in your face. I like to go to war, sometimes even when I shouldn’t. But I’ve learned to utilize my boxing skills in the past couple years a lot better. My heart is a warrior. In my heart I want war. That’s never going to go away. But my punches don’t get wild anymore. I get wild in my heart now, but stick to what I’ve learned: technical aggression.”

So what does he think of his opponent Barthelemy?

“Barthelemy is just like me. I do everything pretty good, nothing spectacular or amazing. I feel I’m rounded off pretty smooth. I don’t do anything that’s really, really bad or that stands out. He’s not a bad boxer, not a bad fighter, everything he has is good, but it’s not blowing my mind. It’s not amazing or out of the ordinary. He’s nothing I haven’t faced before in the ring. He’s good, tall; he’s naturally southpaw, so he’s got a good left side. Good boxer, good puncher. Everything is average. Nothing is spectacular. You know? That’s the same with me.”

Despite what he calls their equality in physical gifts, Usmanee has a definite vision for the important fight’s outcome. “We’re planning on stopping him late. I always want to knock out everybody, but that’s what I want to do and that’s what I’m planning on doing. I’m sure he’s got the same plan. That’s why it’ll be a great fight.”

Usmanee has already won the NABA and WBC Continental Americas Championships as a professional, but says he’s suffered from anonymity so far in his career. This fight may be his ticket to wider recognition.

“I don’t think the world really knows much about me yet. We’re hoping to change that with this fight. I don’t think many Canadians even know who I am yet, but I have been getting a lot of letters from around the world about this fight. I think if I win it, the world will start to know about me.”

The undercard, which will be announced shortly, will feature several young local and international rising stars.

Broner to defend against Rees on Feb 16 in AC

WBC Lightweight champion Adrien Broner will make the first defense of hos crown when he takes on Welshman Gavin Rees on February 16th in Atlantic City according to Dan Rafael of espn.com

Rees got the fight after WBO champion Ricky Burns priced himself out of the fight.

“Gavin Rees was one of the fighters on the short list of approved opponents by HBO,” Schaefer said. “I guess he wanted the fight more since Ricky Burns outpriced himself. I can understand that a fighter would want a career-high payday when fighting Adrien, but when a fighter asks for three or four times his highest payday and wants payment tax-free, then it is simply a way of saying, ‘No, I don’t want to fight Broner.’

“My respect goes out to Gavin Rees for stepping up to the plate and fighting, in my opinion, one of the best pound-for-pound fighters in the world.”

“We have agreed to terms and are proceeding to contract,” Matchroom Sport promoter Eddie Hearn, Rees’ promoter, said. “Gavin is a tenacious fighter. I really feel he will give him a great fight. It is a great opportunity for Gavin. He is a former British, European and world champion, and this kind of fight and occasion is what you are in the game for. Of course, he will be a heavy underdog, but he is a tenacious man with nothing to lose. I believe he will give Broner one hell of a fight.”

ESPN’s Friday Night Fights Season Premiere Features Undefeated Junior Lightweights Barthelemy & Usmanee

ESPN’s Friday Night Fights presented by Corona Extra will kick off a new season January 4 at 10 p.m. ET on ESPN2 HD, ESPN Deportes and will be available online through WatchESPN.com and on smartphones and tablets via the WatchESPN app. The season premiere will match undefeated Junior Lightweights Rances “Kid Blast” Barthelemy (17-0, 11 KOs) and Arash Usmanee (20-0, 10 KOs) in the 12-round main event. The card, from the Magic City Casino in Miami, is promoted by Warriors Boxing.

Joe Tessitore and Teddy Atlas will describe the action for ESPN2 HD, while new studio host Todd Grisham will present all the latest news and boxing highlights. Alex Pombo and Delvin Rodriguez will call the fights for ESPN Deportes’ Viernes de Combates (Friday Night Fights) with Leopoldo Gonzalez and Pablo Viruega in the studio. In his new role as on-site, bi-lingual reporter, former Friday Night Fights host Bernardo Osuna will present live interviews and reports for both shows.

Friday’s show will include a special feature on Usmanee, a native of Afghanistan. The feature reviews Usmanee’s migration to Canada following the then-Soviet Union’s invasion of Afghanistan.

Main Event:
Miami’s Barthelemy, the younger brother of 2004 Olympic gold medalist Yan Barthelemy, is coming off an August eight-round unanimous decision win over Jose Rodriguez. Prior to that fight, Barthelemy won an eight–round unanimous decision over Robert Osiobe in May and scored one of his career-best wins last February, winning an eight-round unanimous decision over Hylon Williams Jr. on ESPN’s Friday Night Fights.

After Barthelemy’s last fight ESPN.com boxing writer Dan Rafael wrote: “Barthelemy set the tone in the first round when he dropped Rodriguez with a left to the body followed by a left upstairs as Rodriguez was going down. The body shot, which is what caused the knockdown, seemed a little low, but referee Sam Burgos didn’t hesitate to call a knockdown immediately. Barthelemy was never in any trouble as he used solid left hooks to beat back Rodriguez throughout the entire one-sided fight.”

Montreal’s Usmanee is coming off a third-round TKO win over Alan Paredes. Usmanee said of Friday’s fight, “Rances Barthelemy is a good fighter. I have to be on top of my game. He’s tall, lanky, his power is pretty good, his speed is pretty good, and he’s going to come to win.”

Co-Feature:
Friday’s co-feature will pit undefeated Junior Middleweight Jonathan “Mantequilla” Gonzalez (15-0-1, 13 KOs), a member of Puerto Rico’s 2008 Olympic team, against Derek Ennis (23-3-1, 13 KOs) of Philadelphia in a 10-round bout. Ennis is coming off an eight-round unanimous decision win over Shakir Ashanti, while Gonzalez will look to rebound from a 12-round draw against former Junior Middleweight titlist Sergiy Dzinziruk.

Additional Fight:

Friday’s card will include an additional third bout, to be included in most 2013 shows. It will be a four-round bout between undefeated Featherweights Hairon Socarras (5-0-1, 4 KOs) and Josh Bowles (6-0, 1 KO).

Rigondeaux’ strength coach Montanocordoba denies Donaire’s claim

Rigondeaux_Kennedy_120609_001a
MIAMI (December 28, 2012) – The strength-and-conditioning coach of World Boxing Association (WBA) Super Bantamweight champion Guillermo “El Chacal” Rigondeaux (11-0, 8 KOs), D.J. Montanocordoba, vehemently denies Internet reports alleged by Nonito “The Filiipino Flash” Donaire that, after the December 15 HBO show in Houston, Montanocordoba verbally accosted a female member of Donaire’s entourage during a heated argument that took place at the Hyatt Hotel.

Donaire (31-1, 20 KOs), the World Boxing Organization (WBO) super bantamweight champion, reportedly searched for Rigondeaux’ room and later called there and Montanocordoba’s room to address the altercation. Ringondeaux was schedule to fight former world champion Poonsawat Kratingdaenggym (48-2, 33 KOs), who failed his medical exam, in the Dec. 15 co-featured bout. Donaire beat Jorge Arce in the main event.

“I just want to clear my name,” Montanocordoba said. “I am part of Team Rigondeaux and wouldn’t do anything like that. I didn’t know anything, if it happened, because I was in my hotel room and not involved. I don’t have a problem with Donaire or anybody in his camp. I didn’t see them after the fight was over. I’m very mellow. I don’t drink or go out clubbing. I concentrate on my job. I talked to a few people in the hotel lobby and went to my room. That’s not my style; I don’t disrespect people. I was surprised by what Nonito said. I spoke to him that Wednesday and told him how much I respected him for what he’s done and that I thought he was good for boxing. He’s a great fighter. I respect him and his wife, his trainer, Robert Garcia, and his other coaches. I was totally shocked when I read the report with Donaire accusing me. .

“We’ll be on opposite sides when if he fights Rigondeaux. As great a fighter Nonito is, I think Rigondeaux is better, and that nobody can beat him at 122. If Nonito doesn’t fight Rigeondeaux, no problem, I can’t disrespect him for that, but he can’t go around saying he’s cleaned-up the division without taking Rigondeaux’ title. Hey, I respect every fighter. (Abner) Mares is great, so is (Wilfredo) Vasquez. If Nonito decides to move-up a division, I can respect that but, he has to defeat Rigondeaux to say he’s cleaned out the 122-pound division, and I believe he is not capable of beating Rigondeaux. The only way they can prove who is better is by fighting in the ring. I’m confident in my ability but, even if I wasn’t working for Rigondeaux, I’d still believe he’s the better fighter. And I’m not taking anything away from Donaire by saying that but I believe it and I know Donaire belives it otherwise he would be willing to face Rigondeaux.

“I don’t conduct myself that way (Donaire’s claim). At the last press conference, I had a direct conversation with Nonito, and I said I admire him and had nothing but respect for him. I’ve said nothing negative about him. He’s has accused me of doing something that I wasn’t even present for and I’m still not disrespecting him. Maybe somebody told him a story, he believed it and got angry. It just never happened.”

The animosity between Team Rigondeaux and Team Donaire has been building the past year, largely due to Donaire’s failure to fight Rigondeaux, something that is rumored to happen in mid-2013.

“Donaire wrongly accused DJ of being abusive to somebody in his entourage,” Rigondeaux’ manager Gary Hyde added. “I was at the Hyatt Hotel with D.J. and both of us retired to our respective rooms after the show at midnight. The next day, D.J. told me that Donaire had called him but he thought he was dreaming because he was woken from a deep sleep. D.J. definitely wasn’t involved in any altercation with Donaire or his people. Team Rigondeaux has respect for Donaire. We don’t condone this type of behavior, but we’re furious at Donaire for accusing D.J. of this type conduct.”

Arguably the greatest amateur boxer of all-time, Rigondeaux is a two-time Olympic gold medalist and seven-time Cuban national champion who also captured a pair of World Championship titles during his incredible 243-4 amateur career.

The multi-talented southpaw, now fighting out of Miami, is rated No. 1 by The Ring Magazine, and Donaire is its super bantamweight/junior lightweight champion.

Fields: Hernandez is in Danger!

Ardmore, Oklahoma, power puncher Eric “Danger” Fields (21-1, 15 KOs) is hoping he’ll be underestimated when he brings his heavy fists to Germany on February 2, 2013, to face IBF Cruiserweight Champion Yoan Pablo Hernandez (27-1, 13 KOs) at Max-Schmeling-Halle in Berlin.

Fields and Hernandez will meet in the main supporting bout of the European Light Heavyweight Championship main event between Eduard Gutknecht and Juergen Braehmer.

“This is his third defense and he’s had some big wins and he’s a southpaw, so I bet he’s feeling real confident fighting a guy in the top 15. Well, guess what? He’s in danger and he won’t know it till it’s too late. I’m taking the title from him and bringing it back to America.”

Fields’ promoter, Greg Cohen of Greg Cohen Promotions, has been looking like a boxing genius of late, after maneuvering WBA world junior middleweight champion Austin Trout from relative obscurity to boxing’s newest star.

Cohen says Fields has exactly the kind of power that has bothered the German-based Cuban Hernandez throughout his career.

“His (Hernandez’s) only official loss came by KO to big punching Wayne Braithwaite. In his last fight he was fortunate to get a decision over Troy Ross, another fighter with heavy, fast hands. Eric has the athleticism, the speed and the strength to go in and get this guy out of there,” said Cohen. “I’m looking forward to adding another world champion to the GCP stable February 2nd.”

“Eric is 100% focused and committed to this fight and an Eric Fields in top shape is a big problem for anyone in the world. Some fighters try to weather the storm and wait for him to tire. He’s not going to tire in this fight. He’s too focused and driven. Now is Eric’s time. ”

Tickets for the fight can be purchased at www.eventim.de and www.boxen.com
