DANIEL “REAL DEAL” GEALE SENDS HIS BLESSING TO GARY SHAW

November 2, 2012 – Upon hearing the news about hurricane Sandy and the destruction it caused to his international promoter Gary Shaw, middleweight champion Daniel “Real Deal” Geal (28-1, 15 KOs), sends his blessing to Team GSP and everyone else who is dealing with the aftermath.

Promoter Gary Shaw, like many in the ravaged New Jersey area, is left without power, electricity and gas for his automobile. Hurricane Sandy is by far the most destructive storm to hit the Northeast in recent years and many people are suffering.

“When I saw that hurricane Sandy wreaked havoc on the New Jersey coastline, I immediately thought of my promoter Gary Shaw,” said Geale. “My team finally got in contact with Gary and told me he is ok and that brought me great comfort. I send my prayers to everyone that is suffering from the after effects of hurricane Sandy and I hope they have a speedy recovery in putting everything back together.”

DANIEL “REAL DEAL” GEALE REFLECTS ON WBA SITUATION

November 1, 2012 – After being stripped by the WBA for taking the Anthony Mundine fight, Australian middleweight champion, Daniel “Real Deal” Geale (28-1, 25 KOs) reflects on the decision made by the sanctioning organization.

“Whilst I enjoyed unifying titles and being crowned the WBA super champion it has become ultimately clear to me that it is impossible to keep all the belts,” said Daniel Geale. “I am aware of my mandatory obligations, however I felt that the challenge from Anthony Mundine was an opportunity to settle the score once and for all, and I want to thank the IBF for granting me the exception that creates a fight which will please all Australian boxing fans.

“As I proudly remain the I.B.F. World champion, I wish the WBA and whoever they crown the same short lived pleasure as I will be coming to reclaim what is rightfully mine.”

Undefeated Don King Prospect Angelo ‘La Cobra’ Santana Makes First Television Appearance On Friday, Nov. 16 Live on ShoBox Doubleheader From Gulfstream Park In Hallandale Beach, Fla.

HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla.—Don King hosted a press conference today at the historic Gulfstream Park in Hallandale Beach, Fla., where he will present two of his top undefeated prospects in separate bouts during a televised doubleheader on ShoBox: The New Generation on Friday, Nov. 16 (live on SHOWTIME 11 p.m. ET/PT). Undefeated junior middleweight contender Omar “Oh!” Henry (12-0-1, 9 KOs), from Chicago, will face “King” James de la Rosa (21-1, 12 KOs), from San Benito, Texas, Angelo “La Cobra” Santana (13-0, 10 KOs), from Miami, and Juan “Johnny” Garcia (13-0, 8 KOs), from Holland, Mich., will meet in a collision of unbeaten lightweight contenders.

King’s press conference featured Santana, 24, a two-time Cuban national champion who has fought professionally out of Miami since 2008. He has stopped his last six opponents within four rounds.

Santana will face a serious test from Garcia, whose greatest claim to fame came when he outpointed previously undefeated Cuban Yordenis Ugas on March 23.

“I know Garcia is coming to fight but so am I,” said Santana, who’s coming off a career-best victory, a third-round technical knockout over highly regarded Justin Savi on June 23. “It is our hope that this fight does not go to the judges’ scorecards. I’m ready to rumble. This will be a good fight for as long as it lasts.”

Eighty-one-year-old Hall of Fame promoter Don King is looking forward to promoting his first event at South Florida’s Gulfstream Park, which in recent years has added a beautiful casino and an exciting indoor-outdoor shopping and dining area known as The Village.

“Gulfstream Park is bigger and better than ever,” said King, whose offices are located in nearby Deerfield Beach. “The outdoor area where we will erect the ring over a fountain will make for one of the most intimate and elegant fight venues ever. South Florida fight fans will love it and it will look great on SHOWTIME.”

Tickets priced at $25, $50, $100 and $200 are on sale and can be purchased online at www.gulfstreampark.com or by calling the Gulfstream Park box office at (954) 457-6201.

A full, domestically non-televised undercard will be led by popular local favorite Joey “Twinkle Fingers” Hernandez (22-1-1, 13 KOs), who is on a seven-fight winning streak. He will be opposed by an opponent to be announced.

Two additional young prospects—both from Albany, N.Y.—will also be featured in separate bouts on the undercard and attended today’s press event. Amir “Young Master” Imam (5-0, 4 KOs), a fighter King is very high on, and Trevor “American Dream” Bryan (4-0, 3 KOs), a 2011 Olympic alternate, will also fight foes to be determined.

Omar Henry, fighting in the main event, is expected to receive the toughest challenge of his young career against Mexican boxer-puncher James de la Rosa.

Sunshine State Showdown is promoted by Don King Productions. Doors open at 7:30 p.m. and the first live fight will take place at 8 p.m.

DIBELLA ENTERTAINMENT SENDS THOUGHTS AND PRAYERS TO TRI-STATE AREA

New York, NY (11/1/12) – On Monday, Hurricane Sandy ripped across the Northeast, leaving much of the area a disaster zone, especially parts of New York and New Jersey. Lives were lost, homes were ruined, and millions of people were left devastated. Lou DiBella, President of DiBella Entertainment, who lives on Long Island where the storm struck extremely hard, was one of the more fortunate ones, as he and his family were able to remain safe, while only suffering damages to their homes.

A lifelong New Yorker who has been promoting shows throughout the tri-state area for over a decade, DiBella realizes the importance of banding together in such harsh times as these.

“Where our staff has been greatly inconvenienced and our offices and homes have been left without power, hot water and cell phone service, we suffered no injuries to family, our properties are largely intact and we will be back on our feet shortly,” said DiBella. “The tri-state area is the home of DBE and our Broadway Boxing series. So many of our friends, fans and viewers have suffered far greater damage than we have. Breezy Point, the Rockaways and much of the Jersey Shore will never be the same and people are enduring unbearable suffering in those areas and many others. Broadway Boxing will return before the end of the year and the final card of 2012 will be a fundraising effort for those most harmed by Hurricane Sandy. We will work with possible television outlets and venues and an announcement will be forthcoming shortly.”

The thoughts and prayers of all of us at DBE are with everyone who has been affected by this catastrophe. All of us who are suffering little more than discomfort, inconvenience and minor property damage should be thankful that we came out of this with what is most important; our families, our friends, our health and our homes. There are many who were not so lucky and they are in the thoughts and prayers of everyone at DBE and those reading this press release.

ERISLANDY LARA ON UPCOMING FIGHT AGAINST VANES MARTIROSYAN: “MY GOAL IS TO PUNISH VANES”

LOS ANGELES, November 1 – After two years of talking, the wait is almost over and Vanes Martirosyan, will finally fight Cuban star Erislandy Lara. Lara, who is recognized as one of the best fighters in the world, and Martirosyan, an unbeaten 2004 United States Olympian, will put everything on the line in a 12 round WBC Super Welterweight World title elimination fight that will headline the Saturday, November 10 edition of HBO Boxing After Dark at 10:00 p.m. ET/PT. from the Lafite Ballroom at Wynn Las Vegas.

“The fight is almost here and the fans are in for a great night of action,” said the number one rated WBC super welterweight contender who has wanted to corner the trash-talking Martirosyan in the ring since 2010. “My goal is to punish Vanes in this fight because he’s been talking so much trash. This fight has been a long time in coming and I’m going to make him pay for his disrespect.”

“I’m extremely focused and mentally prepared to give fans a great performance on November 10th,” continued Lara. “I’ve worked hard my entire life to get into position to fight for a world championship and Martirosyan stands in my way. Like all Cuban fighters, we bring a lot of heart and soul into the ring and this fight will be no different. I’m coming to establish myself as the best super welterweight in the world.”

“This fight is dedicated to all those who are suffering and have lost their lives to Hurricane Sandy including the 11 Cubans who were killed by the storm,” continued Lara. “My prayers go out to all of their families. God Bless!”

“I’m excited to see Lara show his skills on November 10th against Martirosyan,” said Oscar De La Hoya, president of Golden Boy Promotions. “This fight has been a long time coming and we’re excited it is finally happening. I have full confidence that Lara will come out victorious and make a statement that he is a force in the 154 pound weight class.”

“Lara and Martirosyan are two of the top fighters at 154 pounds,” said Lara’s manager Luis DeCubas Jr. “I can guarantee they will put on a great show for everyone watching on HBO. Lara is ready to show the world he’s the best fighter in the division. The winner of this fight will be in a great position and that will be Erislandy Lara!”

A decorated member of the renowned Cuban amateur boxing program, 29-year-old Erislandy Lara (17-1-1, 11 KO’s) is one of the most respected-and avoided-fighters in the world today. In 2011, Lara was on the short end of one of boxing’s most controversial decisions in a July 2011 loss against Paul Williams after which all three judges were suspended indefinitely. Undeterred, the slick and powerful southpaw rebounded in 2012 with a 94 second technical knockout win over Ronald Hearns and a 10-round decision victory over Freddy Hernandez. Now he looks forward to his upcoming November 10 title elimination bout against number two rated WBC super welterweight contender Vanes Martirosyan (32-0, 20 KO’s), a 26-year-old Californian who is coming off of a third round technical knockout win over Troy Lowry in February.

UNDEFEATED FIGHTERS TO FACE CHICAGO’S FINEST PROSPECTS FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 16 AT THE UIC PAVILION

CHICAGO, IL (November 1, 2012) A sensational undercard has been announced for “WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING” set for Friday, NOVEMBER 16 at Chicago’s UIC Pavilion, it was announced today by Round 3 Productions.

“WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING” is headlined by an IBO Light Heavyweight World Title bout between “Chicago’s Polish Prince”, Andrzej Fonfara and world title challenger Tommy Karpency of Adah, Pennsylvania in a twelve round clash.

“Fight fans coming to the UIC Pavilion events in recent years have a high expectation for a terrific evening of world class professional boxing. With the addition of this sensational undercard coupled with the world title bout in the main event we are putting together a full evening of great fights” said Frank Mugnolo, President of Round 3 Productions. ‘The combined winning percentage of the fighters on the card is 89%.”

“We’ve got three very popular local prospects on the undercard, Paul Littleton, Jaime Herrera and Luis Santiago along with heavyweight contender Carl Davis. Fans want to see them in tough fights, the fighters want to be tested and we want to promote the best possible fights so everyone is a winner. Each of these four fighters is facing boxers with undefeated records.”

In the super middleweight division, former Chicago Golden Gloves Champion Paul Littleton will return to the UIC Pavilion in front of his legion of fans to face St. Louis, Missouri prospect Michael Williams in a six round middleweight clash.

With a record of 4-0-1 with four knockouts, the 26-year-old heavy-handed Littleton has looked sensational at the UIC Pavilion where his four wins have taken place. The 22-year-old undefeated Williams, 2-0-0 (2KO’s), is coming off a brutal first round knockout of Coltin Cole on APRIL 13 in St. Louis.

Just 23-years-old, Mexican American Jaime “THE TRUTH” Herrera, 8-2-0 (4KO’s), has built a massive following at the UIC Pavilion where all of his fights have taken place. At “WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING”, Herrera will be challenged by 21-year-old undefeated Patrick Boozer, 5-0-0 (2KO’s) of Ann Arbor, Michigan in a six round welterweight tilt.

Earlier this year on FEBRUARY 24, Herrera battled top prospect Adrian Granados at the UIC Pavilion, waging an excellent eight round war in front of a massive crowd of cheering fans.

Having a very busy 2012, Boozer will be making the fifth start of the year, winning a unanimous decision over Jesus Vallejo on AUGUST 18 in Helena, Montana.

Bursting onto the Chicago fight scene last year, Puerto Rican welterweight Luis “SITO” Santiago has become the local scene’s most improved fighter, compiling a record of 5-0-0 (1KO). A fan favorite at the UIC Pavilion, Santiago returns to action following a six round decision over Marlon Smith on APRIL 14.

Santiago will be challenged by the 22-year-old Justin Jones, 5-0-0 (3KO’s), of Bellair, Florida. The highly touted Jones is coming off a third round knockout of Rohan Wilson on JUNE 1 in Tampa, FL.

Heavyweights will also be represented as perennial contender Carl “IRON FIST” Davis, 16-4-0 (12KO’s), of Evanston, will clash with undefeated Kansas City, Missouri native Richard Carmack, 10-0-0 (8KO’s).

Davis looks to stay on the winning track following a second round knockout of two-time world title challenger Bert Cooper on SEPTEMBER 8 in Hammond, Indiana.

Looking to continue his climb in the heavyweight rankings, the 24-year-old Carmack returns to the ring following a “no-contest” against Byron Polley on SEPTEMBER 22 caused as a result of an accidental head-butt.

Advance tickets for “WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING” priced at $150, $100, $50 and $30, may be purchased through Ticketmaster (www.ticketmaster.com, phone 1-800-745-3000) or at the UIC Pavilion Box Office (phone 312-413-5700) in addition to the Round 3 Productions Office (phone 708-345-9999).

The UIC Pavilion is located at 525 S. Racine on the near West Side of Chicago. Doors on the evening of the event will open at 7pm with the first bell at 8pm.

Top Don King Prospects Featured at Gulfstream Park On Friday, Nov. 16 In a ShoBox Doubleheader From Hallandale Beach, Fla.

HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla.—Top prospects from Don King’s boxing stable will appear on ShoBox: The New Generation in a doubleheader on Friday, Nov. 16 at Gulfstream Park in Hallandale Beach, Fla., (live at 11 p.m. ET/PT, on SHOWTIME). Undefeated junior middleweight contender Omar “Oh!” Henry (12-0-1, 9 KOs), from Chicago, will face a stiff test from “King” James de la Rosa (21-1, 12 KOs), from San Benito, Tex., while undefeated lightweight Angelo “La Cobra” Santana (13-0, 10 KOs), from Miami, will face fellow unbeaten Juan “Johnny” Garcia (13-0, 8 KOs), from Holland, Mich. Both matches are scheduled for 10 rounds.

Tickets priced at $25, $50, $100 and $200 are on sale now and can be purchased online at www.gulfstreampark.com or by calling the Gulfstream Park box office at (954) 457-6201.

Local favorite Joey Hernandez (22-1-1, 13 KOs), an American-born Cuban, will appear in a domestically non-televised super welterweight attraction against an opponent to be named. Hernandez is riding a seven fight winning streak that is moving him closer to his dream of fighting for a world championship.

Omar Henry has long been considered one of the top prospects in boxing. A proud Puerto Rican, he earned a stellar amateur record of 60-5, and has remained undefeated in 12 professional contests. Henry is now anxious to achieve the greatness that so many have predicted for him.

Mexican boxer-puncher James de la Rosa is expected to provide Henry with the most difficult challenge of his young career. Fighting out of South Texas, de la Rosa would love nothing more than to snap Henry’s unbeaten streak. An excellent boxer with better-than-average power, de la Rosa is known for his speed and combinations, which have resulted in his 12 knockouts. He is also a ShoBox alumnus. He won a unanimous decision in a close fight against Tim Coleman in a 2008 SHOWTIME-televised event.

In the co-featured main event, two undefeated fighters—both 13-0—will tangle at lightweight when Angelo Santana meets Juan Garcia.

Santana was a two-time national champion in Cuba before heading to Miami to follow his girlfriend and dreams of winning a world championship. Now married to that girlfriend, Santana is closing in on his first world-title shot. At 24, Santana has matured to the point where he has stopped his last six opponents in four rounds or less. In his last appearance, Santana earned his best win against a quality opponent, world-class contender Justin Savi, who he dispatched with a third round technical knockout on June 23.

Standing in his way is Garcia, who looks to spoil Santana’s rags-to-riches story-in-the-making. No stranger to facing undefeated prospects, Garcia defeated William Jackson (10-0-1) last year. Garcia turned heads on March 23 after he scored a shocking upset over highly touted Cuban Yordenis Ugas, who was 11-0 before they met.

Sunshine State Showdown is promoted by Don King Productions. Doors open at 7:30 p.m. A full undercard will be presented. Henry vs. de la Rosa and Santana vs. Garcia will be televised on ShoBox: The Next Generation live beginning at 11 p.m. ET/PT (delayed on the West Coast) on SHOWTIME.

Sauerland and Weber want Wladimir Klitschko! Money on the table – 5 Million Euros to face Huck!***

The big Cruiserweight Title Fight between current WBO-Champion Marco Huck
and challenger Firat Arslan in Halle/Westphalia, Germany, is just days away.
But already Kalle Sauerland and event organizer Ralf Weber are working on
the next Mega-Fight. After Henry Maske, Axel Schulz and Marco Huck
36-year-old Wladimir Klitschko could be the next big name to appear at the
Gerry Weber Stadion. The offer to the Heavyweight World Champion: 5 Mio.
Euros! Wladimir’s opponent: Marco Huck!

But why? Kalle Sauerland: “Bernd Boente, Klitschko’s manager, has been
talking to Marco directly about the possibility of fighting Klitschko. Now
we have used the official channels to approach them with an offer.” And the
Klitschko-Camp did not take long to respond. After just 20 minutes they
declined the offer! “Of course, we are now excepting them to come up with a
counter offer. We are always willing to hold personal talks to discuss the
terms for such a fight. Then we will see if they will actually put their
money where their mouth is. We definitely want to make this fight happen.”

Klitschko versus Huck – perhaps the fight the heavyweight division has been
waiting for. “We have been working with the Sauerlands for 18 years now and
been hosting great fight nights at the Gerry Weber Stadion. A fight between
Huck and Klitscko would be the absolute highlight. We will do everything
possible to make this fight happen,” said Ralf Weber, General Manager of the
Gerry Weber Stadion.

Weber and Sauerland have come up with a financial plan to support the
Mega-Fight. Weber: “We have made a serious offer to the
Klitschko-Management, which we believe should make everyone involved happy.”

WBO Cruiserweight Champion Marco Huck: “I am very grateful to the Weber’s
and Sauerland’s for trying to give me this opportunity. I will prove to
everybody that I am ready for the Klitschkos.”

But before that, Huck needs to win against Firat Arslan. When a possible
match-up with Wladimir Klitschko could be possible has not been disclosed at
this point of time. Before such fight the current WBA Super Champion
Wladimir Klitschko has to take on WBA Regular Champion Alexander Povetkin
before the end of February 2012, as ordered by the WBA. Weber: “We would
also be interested to stage that fight in Halle/Westphalia. The winner could
face Marco Huck.”

Tickets for the fight on November 3 can be purchased at www.eventim.de and
www.gerryweber-world.de.

GENNADY GOLOVKIN NAMED SOLE WBA MIDDLEWEIGHT CHAMPION

JAKARTA, INDONESIA (November 1, 2012) The World Boxing Association announced that Daniel Geale will be stripped of his “Super Champion” status and Gennady Golovkin is named as their “sole WBA middleweight champion”. President Gilberto Mendoza made the declaration at the WBA’s 91st Annual Convention in Jakarta.

Geale won the WBA “Super Champion” title when he unified the WBA and IBF titles by winning a decision over existing WBA “Super Champion” Felix Sturm on SEPTEMBER 1 in Oberhausen, Germany.

However, because of Sturm’s long overdue mandatory obligation to Golovkin, the WBA declared the winner of Sturm/Geale bout must face the winner of Golovkin/Grzegorz Proksa by DECEMBER 31.

Golovkin defeated Proksa by stopping him in the fifth round in a very impressive performance. Geale has since declined to face Golovkin announcing he will fight Anthony Mundine in JANUARY 2013 in Australia.

“We commend the WBA for clearing up this long overdue situation and recognizing Gennady as their only champion in the middleweight division. Gennady is proud to be the WBA and IBO champion and looks forward to returning to the ring soon” said Tom Loeffler of K2 Promotions.

Geale had a great win over Sturm in Germany, however he soon joined many others in avoiding Gennady. Geale turned down a potential lucrative fight against Golovkin on HBO to sign for the Mundine fight. “We don’t blame Geale and his team for taking a safer fight, however they knew the obligations they would have prior to the Sturm fight. Geale is still IBF champion and if he continues to win, this might be a great unification fight in the future.”

Golovkin, now 24-0-0 with 21 knockouts, made his highly anticipated HBO and United States debut on SEPTEMBER 1, impressively stopping #3 WBA ranked and European Champion Grzegorz Proksa in the fifth round at the Turning Stone Casino in Verona, NY.

Plans for Golovkin’s next fight will be announced shortly.

VITALIY DEMYANENKO READY FOR MAIN EVENT SHOWDOWN THIS SATURDAY

October 31, 2012 – Undefeated welterweight contender, Vitaliy Demyanenko (21-0, 12 KOs), will be showcased in the main event at the Emerald Casino in Tacoma, Washington this Saturday November 3rd, when he faces journeyman, Damian Frias (19-5-1, 10 KOs) in a 10-round bout. The event is promoted by Brian Halquist Productions in association with Boxing 360, who promotes Demyanenko.

Demyanenko looks to continue his march up the welterweight rankings and add another win to his undefeated record. With a possible TV fight looming for the Russian born standout, Vitaliy is looking to make a statement against Frias.

“Training camp is complete and I’m excited to be fighting in the main event this Saturday,” said Demyanenko. “I know Frais is coming to fight but there’s nothing he can do that is going to surprise me. My trainer and I have studied his tapes and we’ve put together a masterful game plan to counter his attack. My goal in this fight is to get the knockout, but I’m prepared to go the distance if I have too.”

“Vitaliy is ready to go and I expect him to have a great performance against Frais,” stated Demyanenko’s manager Steve Pochiro. “The ultimate goal is to position Demyanenko into the top ten of all sanctioning organizations by early next year.”

“Demyanenko is making a lot of noise right now in the welterweight division,” says Boxing 360 promoter Mario Yagobi. “His name is big in Russia where he was born and raised and he’s been getting better with each fight. He’s got a bright future as long as he keeps winning, which I anticipate him to do.”

DERRICK WEBSTER EYEBALLING NOV. 10TH RETURN Undefeated Super Middleweight Being Featured on Show in Millville, NJ

Undefeated super middleweight Derrick “Take it to the Bank” Webster (13-0, 7 KOs) will be making his long awaited return to the ring next Saturday, November 10th, fighting at the New Jersey Motorsports Park in Millville, New Jersey. The bout marks his first contest since participating in the camps of Julio Cesar Chavez, Jr., Andre Ward and Sergey Kovalev, and the Garden State native is eager to show the boxing community what he learned while training with those world class fighters.

Webster brings a 13-0 record to his fight next Saturday (Photo by Team Webster, Click for full-size version).

“This fight here seems different than any other fight that I’ve had,” Webster said of the bout. “Coming out of the Andre Ward and Sergey Kovalev camps, I’m totally different, from the way that I shadow box, my work ethic, also my strength and conditioning. Even Denny (Brown, trainer) is seeing a lot of things that he’s been trying to show me are now being pulled out of me. My inside fight game has gotten a lot better since Andre Ward, and my power has really improved since Sergey Kovalev. He was a lot bigger than me in the camp, but I stood strong and withstood what he brought to me.”

A man who already had many tools in his arsenal, the constantly evolving Webster says that fight fans will be seeing a completely different version of him after he steps through the ropes next weekend.

“I’m more excited than ever about getting into the ring for this fight due to everything I’ve learned from these camps,” he stated. “Now, I get to show the world an entirely new Derrick Webster. The thing of it is, I’m 6-4 as a middleweight or super middleweight, so I’m tall for a boxer. There are a lot of things people think I can’t do. Put pressure on me. Stay in the pocket. Attack the body. Do whatever it is you feel that you need to do, but it’s going to take a whole lot more than that. When I’m giving world champions the type of work I’m giving and making them feel that being in the ring with me is going to take them to another level of execution against their opponents, that says something.”

Due to opponent backouts, the New Jersey southpaw last stepped in the ring back in April, defeating a tough Sabou Ballogou via unanimous decision at Resorts Casino in Atlantic City. Having to endure such a long break has only made Webster more full of anticipation for next Saturday, and he plans to show that when the opening bell sounds.

“I’m overly excited. I can’t even express how excited I am,” he confirmed. “I’ve always believed in where I thought my future was going to be, and now I’m starting to see exactly what I’m capable of doing. The people who don’t know what Take it to the Bank is all about, the ones who are sleeping on me, they are going to be woken up.”

Webster is still awaiting confirmation on his opponent for next weekend, and an official announcement is expected this week. Headlining the Millville show is Thomas “Cornflake” Lamanna (9-0, 5 KOs), with a full undercard on tap as well.

UFC® 154 STARS REVEAL THEIR FAVORITE HALLOWEEN COSTUMES

Las Vegas, Nevada – Just weeks before they enter the Octagon® at Bell Centre in Montreal, the stars of UFC® 154: ST-PIERRE vs. CONDIT took a break from training to discuss their favorite Halloween costumes. As they gear up for the highly anticipated Pay-Per-View card on Saturday, Nov. 17, read what some of the sport’s top stars had to say.

UFC welterweight champion, Georges St-Pierre:

“I was usually disguised as a ninja for Halloween because I have been a martial arts fan ever since I was a young age. My favorite part of Halloween is the candy, because I love candy.”

UFC interim welterweight champion, Carlos Condit:

“Halloween is probably my favorite holiday. Ever since I was a kid, I loved to get dressed up in different stuff. I used to celebrate Halloween for three or four days, go to parties and try to string it out as long as I could.

“My favorite costume is tough because there have been so many crazy ones. I have been the devil and I liked being a hacked-up zombie with fake blood.”

Mark Hominick:

“I’m definitely looking forward to Halloween this year with my daughter being able to understand more. I’m excited to go around trick or treating with her. She’s wearing a cow costume and she likes to run around the house in her costume saying ‘MOO.’

“I was always a ninja, boxer or something to do with combat sports for Halloween, so I think it pre-planned what I was going to be one day.”

Martin Kampmann:

“Coming from Denmark, I’m pretty new to Halloween so I’ve only dressed up a few times. But I think I’d have to say that my full-sized Scooby Doo costume was my overall favorite.”

Johny Hendricks:

“My favorite costume has to be the one I’ve got planned for this year. I’m going all camouflage for my version of Duck Dynasty. With a beard like mine, it can’t go wrong.”

Tom Lawlor:

“My favorite costume that I’ve worn for a fight in the UFC is the one that I’ve worn during my wins; that of a capable mixed martial arts fighter. I’m joking of course. My favorite is probably my 80’s workout themed ‘Let’s Get Physical’ entrance, not based entirely on my costume, but rather the fact that my corner men stayed in character while pumping workout bands and curling pink five-pound dumbbells for the entire walk to the Octagon.”

“Unfortunately, the UFC fans were not able to enjoy my many Halloween costumes comprised entirely of body paint such as a Ninja Turtle, Power Ranger and polar bear due to dangers associated with paint-on costumes, but I digress. My favorite fight entrance costume I have done thus far was in a regional promotion early in my fighting career. I donned full New Kids on the Block regalia and did the New Kids’ dance to ‘Hangin’ Tough.’ Any time I can emulate my hometown musical heroes is a joyous day in my life.”

Arianny Celeste:

“My favorite Halloween costume of all time was my Zombie Red Riding Hood. I wanted a cool original costume and I came up with the idea to be a sort of ‘Walking Dead’ Red Riding Hood. It was a fun costume and everywhere I went people were freaked out. It was the best Halloween ever (laughs).”

Brittney Palmer:

“My favorite costume ever was last year when I dressed up like Steven Tyler of Aerosmith!”

AMIR KHAN, CARLOS MOLINA, OSCAR DE LA HOYA, ASIF VALI & STEPHEN ESPINOZA KHAN VS. MOLINA LOS ANGELES PRESS CONFERENCE QUOTES

LOS ANGELES (Oct. 31, 2012) – Former Unified Super Lightweight World Champion and British superstar Amir “King” Khan, unbeaten super lightweight contender Carlos Molina, President of Golden Boy Promotions Oscar De La Hoya, Khan Promotions’ Asif Vali, Khan trainer Virgil Hunter, Molina trainer Clemente Medina and Executive Vice President and General Manager of SHOWTIME Sports Stephen Espinoza participated in a press conference Tuesday to formally announce Khan’s and Molina’s Saturday, Dec. 15 fight at the Los Angeles Sports Arena which will be broadcast live on SHOWTIME® (10:30 p.m. ET/PT, delayed on the West Coast).

Khan (26-3, 18 KO’s), of Bolton England, a Silver Medalist at the 2004 Olympic Games who’ll be making his SHOWTIME debut and first start under new trainer Virgil Hunter, and Molina (17-0-1, 7 KO’s), a former National Amateur Champion from Norwalk, Calif., will meet in a 12-round 140 lb. bout in a main event on SHOWTIME CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING. The event will also be televised live by Sky Sports 1HD in the United Kingdom at 1:00 a.m. GMT on Sunday, December 16. The SHOWTIME telecast will be preceded by live preliminary fights on SHOWTIME EXTREME (8:00 p.m. ET/PT).

Khan, 25, has defeated past or current world champions Marco Maidana, Paulie Malignaggi, Zab Judah and Marco Antonio Barrera. Molina, 26, is taking a big step up in class after defeating the likes of Manuel Leyva, Glenn Gonzales and Marcos Jimenez.

Festivities on Dec. 15 will feature a holiday fanfest complete with musical acts, memorabilia and gift giveaways, autograph signings, and meet and greets with some of boxing’s biggest stars.

Tickets priced at $150, $100, $75, $50 and $25, plus applicable taxes and service charges, are on sale at the Los Angeles Sports Arena box office, all Ticketmaster outlets or by calling Ticketmaster at (800) 745-3000, or online at ticketmaster.com. Tickets for fans traveling from the United Kingdom are available for purchase online at www.sportscorporation.com or by calling +44 (0)845 163 0845.

What the fighters, trainers and executives said at the Sports Arena on Tuesday:

AMIR KHAN

“I’d like to thank the promoters for putting this fight together and Team Molina for taking the fight. I’m looking forward to fighting on SHOWTIME in the United States.

“I made some mistakes in my last fight, so I changed trainers and training camps. I am now in the Bay Area and I love it. There are no distractions. Sparring has been brilliant.

“I came to the States early so I could work on my technique. Virgil’s got me thinking more, but in a way that won’t get in the way when I fight. I know I have to keep thinking once the fight starts.

“I think Molina has a similar style to mine. He’s a pressure fighter and exciting to watch. We both want to win. I know he doesn’t want to lose his unbeaten record, and I want to show I’m back.

“This fight is in Molina’s backyard but I expect a lot of fans from England to be there. I believe I will win and get back to where I want to be.”

CARLOS MOLINA

“I’m prepared for an all-out war. I want to thank Amir Khan for this great opportunity, but I have to say I think he’s made a big mistake. I’ve got a great team behind me including my trainer Clemente Medina and I’m fighting in my hometown. I can’t ask for anything more than that.

“Come December 15th, the only outcome I see is me remaining undefeated. We’re going to be ready for anything he brings to the table.

“Khan’s a good fighter, a fast fighter. He’s got a great jab and good footwork, but on fight night I’m going to be the dictator and he’s going to fight the way I want to fight. We’re going to shine.

“I think I have the power to knock him out. I don’t think I’ll do it in one punch. I don’t think I have one-punch power but if I hit a guy with three or four shots he will feel it.”

(On his ring-walk on Dec. 15)

“Just like Mike Tyson — focused and straight ahead. Nothing flashy.”

VIRGIL HUNTER (Khan’s Trainer)

“We’re going on our fourth week together and I couldn’t ask for anything better, or for a better situation to be in. Amir is easy to work with and easy to train. He has an open mind and is easy to communicate with.

“Everything has just been great so far.”

CLEMENTE MEDINA (Molina’s Trainer)

“We’ve had some great sparring. We know Amir Khan is considered the greater fighter, but we are hungrier right now, and that’s why we’ll win.

“We are training more with the legs because we know that we will have to move a lot. We’re training hard, like this is a championship fight.”

OSCAR DE LA HOYA (President, Golden Boy Promotions)

“We’re very excited about this main event fight and to be back on SHOWTIME CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING. We’re extremely fortunate to have Amir Kahn back in action against a tough local fighter in Carlos Molina.

“Once again, we will have an action-packed event. I’m proud and happy that SHOWTIME will televise this great fight card from the L.A. Sports Arena, which has a lot of great history. Danny “Little Red” Lopez fought “Schoolboy” Bobby Chacon in a great, great fight here. That fight, like Kahn against Molina matched youth vs. experience.

“It’s always great to do fights in Los Angeles and what better way than with Amir Kahn in the headliner. Amir is always entertaining, always on his game and always in great shape. He’s also always prepared to put on a great show and go 12 hard rounds.

“Amir’s been there and fought the best of the best and wants to prove he’s the No. 1 fighter pound-for-pound in the world.

“In Molina we have a fighter who comes to fight, has made a name for himself on the local scene in L.A. and has been on several high-profile cards.

“This is not an easy comeback fight for Kahn. He could have taken an easier fight, but once again he chose to fight a tough, unbeaten guy in his backyard. It shows what kind of character Amir has.

“With the December 15th event so close to Christmas, we here at Golden Boy Promotions decided to do a fanfest. Anyone with a ticket can participate in all the events leading up to the fights. It’s a family-friendly experience where fans will be able to get autographs and have photos taken with some of their most favorite fighters from around the world. It’s our way of saying thank you for all their continued support.”

ASIF VALI (Khan Promotions)

“I want to thank everyone for having us here. The Sports Arena is a fantastic facility. Muhammad Ali fought here and a “Rocky” movie was filmed here.

“I’d like to wish Team Molina all the best.

“We went back to the drawing board after Amir’s last fight. We made a lot of changes, all because we wanted to make Amir the great fighter we thought he could be. We parted ways with Freddie Roach. There were 20-25 trainers to choose from, but we brought in Virgil Hunter to see what he would bring to the table.

“The first big test is December 15th. We know this is Molina’s coming out party, but it’s Amir’s coming in party. He will make a statement. He will show all the people who ever doubted him.”

STEPHEN ESPINOZA

“Amir Khan vs. Carlos Molina will cap off what is likely the highest-profile and most star-studded run of fights in the history of SHOWTIME CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING. Over the last few months SHOWTIME has already brought you established stars such as Victor Ortiz, Robert Guerrero, Canelo Alvarez, Devon Alexander, Paulie Malignaggi and the legendary Erik Morales, and the new faces and stars of tomorrow, Lucas Matthysse, Danny Garcia and Peter Quillin.

“On Dec. 15 we have a classic match-up between two exciting fighters: the established star, Amir Kahn against the up-and-comer, Carlos Molina. Each has questions to answer. Each has a lot at stake.

“We are very excited to have Amir fighting on SHOWTIME for the first time and look forward to having him on SHOWTIME for the rest of his career. We are also looking forward to seeing Carlos Molina, who is also fighting for the first time on SHOWTIME and will be striving to make a great first impression.

“One programming note: The Nov. 10 telecast starts at 7:30 (PT). A half-hour before, at 7, “All Access: Cotto vs. Trout’ – Epilogue” will premiere on SHOWTIME. This episode will give fans an exclusive behind-the-scenes look at fight week and the aftermath of the December 1 fight between Miguel Cotto and Austin Trout.”

###

Khan vs. Molina is presented by Golden Boy Promotions and Khan Promotions and sponsored by Corona. The SHOWTIME CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING telecast begins live at 10:30 p.m. ET/PT (delayed on the West Coast) with preliminary fights live on SHOWTIME EXTREME® beginning at 8:00 p.m. ET/PT (delayed on the West Coast). The Sky Sports 1HD telecast begins live at 1:00 a.m. GMT on Sunday, December 16.

Hamid Rahimi wins “Fight 4 Peace” in Kabul, beats Said Mbelwa by TKO 7

“This is a dream which just came true”, said newly crowned WBO intercontinental middleweight champion Hamid Rahimi moments after stopping Said Mbelwa from Tanzania in the seventh round of the “Fight 4 Peace” on Tuesday night in front of a sold out crowd of 3,000 enthusiastic fans at the “Loya Jirga” in Kabul. It was the first professional boxing fight ever to take place in Afghanistan.

Rahimi dominated the fight from the opening bell although he was obviously nervous because of the pressure of fighting in his home country for the first time in his life. Still the Hamburg based Afghan managed to establish his jab and connect with the cleaner shots.

On the other hand, Said Mbelwa could not keep his promise to knock out Rahimi in four. The fighter from Tanzania was the rougher and tougher fighter using some dirty tactics to distract his opponent. Referee Holger Wiemann from Germany warned Mbelwa for low blows and even deducted a point from him in the seventh for repeated rabbit punches.

Rahimi was always in control showing some nice combinations and good counter punching alhtough none of his attacks seemed to really hurt Mbelwa. The end came in the seventh round when Mbelwa was forced to retire due to a shoulder injury and referee Wiemann waved it off at 1:17.

“I can’t even find the words to say how proud and happy I am”, said Rahimi who started celebrating with hundreds of VIP fans and high ranked politicians in the ring immediately after the final bell. “This is a big day for myself and a very important day for Afghanistan, too. We managed to set a sign for peace and freedom and we showed the people – not only in my country but all over the world – that peace is worth fighting for. I want to tell everybody to keep on fighting for your dreams and goals. Together we can achieve big things and make the impossible happen. I thank my team and all the people who believed in me for their huge support. This event may be over but the fight for peace will go on. I want to encourage everybody to stand up and join us on our mission.”

Arslan didn’t show his cards – Huck counting on home support

The wait is almost over. Marco Huck will defend his WBO Cruiserweight title
on Saturday for the tenth time. He will take on former WBA Champion Firat
Arslan at the Gerry Weber Stadion in Halle/Westphalia, Germany. Ahead of the
fight, both protagonist took part in today’s public workout staged at the
Business Club of the local Football team Arminia Bielefeld.

First to show-off his skills was the challenger. Although Arslan is already
42-years of age, the former world champion himself believes that he is in
the best shape of his long lasting career. But surprisingly he was not
really willing to let the masses as well as his opponent have a sneak peak
of his tough training regime. “The fans will be able to see what I can do
come Saturday night”, promised the challenger. “I came here to win the world
championship.” His coach Dieter Wittmann was also optimistic. “Firat is
about 30 percent better than I have ever seen him.”

But in order to take the WBO Belt he will need these 30 percent. His
opponent of the night, the Champion himself, is aiming to keep his winning
streak at the Gerry Weber Stadion alive. Twice before in his career Huck
stepped into the arena in Halle/Westfalen and left it as the winner. And he
was eager to show, that he is still as good as he was back in 2009 when he
first won the WBO Crown at the very same stadium. He once again is counting
on the support of the home fans. “It is always a pleasure to travel to
Halle/Westphalia. It is here where I first became a world champion and now I
have the chance to defend my title for the tenth time. Coach Ulli Wegner,
who has been working with Huck for most of his career, is sure that his
prodigy has what it takes to be victorious against Arslan. “The development
of Marco has been immense. I am totally confident that he will leave the
ring as the WBO Super Champion.”

But before the clash between these two explosive boxers, Huck and his coach
will be attending the German Cup game between Arminia Bielefeld and Bayer
Leverkusen. After some of the Bielefeld players visited Huck at today’s
workout session, it is obvious who the champion will be rooting for.

Tickets for the fight on November 3 can be purchased on www.eventim.de and

A native of Nigeria, now based in the fight capital of the world, Las Vegas, Nevada, Osiobe is coming off his career best victory, winning a hard fought ten round battle over Jose Hernandez on AUGUST 18 in Tacoma, WA.

Son of former world champion Pipino Cuevas Sr., the heavy-handed Cuevas Jr. has been a professional for seven years. Both of his starts in 2012 have ended in early stoppages, most recently knocking out Jose Luis Lopez on MAY 13 in the second round in Hidalgo, Texas.

Nader presents cake to Santos – wants to take his title away on Friday

Tuesday’s press conference ahead of the EU Middleweight Championship on
Friday at Multiversum Schwechat, Austria was more about respect than
anything else. Before both combatants shared their thoughts with the local
press, challenger Marcos Nader (16-0, 2 KOs) presented a Sacher cake to
champion Roberto Santos (18-6-2, 10 KOs), who turned 31 today. Surprised by
this gesture, the “Tiger of Benidorm” spontaneously hugged his upcoming
opponent to thank him.

However, this event was about their bout this upcoming Friday so both got
serious. First up to talk was the hometown favourite Marcos Nader: “For
sure, Roberto Santos is a big challenge to overcome. But with the so-called
‘Third Fist’ – my fans in support – I am absolutely convinced to crown
myself the new EU Middleweight Champion come this Friday.” Furthermore, the
22-year-old thinks to have the right strategy to beat the Spaniard. “Not
much time has passed since my last fight – and the same applies to Roberto.
We both fought on September 15 and both, me and my coach Otto Ramin, could
watch him fight in Bamberg. There, I saw strengths and weaknesses he has as
a fighter. Therefore, I could prepare myself perfectly and will exploit
those weaknesses with the right tactics.

But Santos was also an interested onlooker when Nader fought Bertu the night
the Spaniard won the EU Middleweight Championship. “He has a pretty good
technique which is no surprise to me as he has a vast experience shown by
his amateur background.” However, the man to defeat Dominik Britsch is in
the shape of his life by his own admission and wants to give prove of this
fact at the Multiversum. “I travelled two times to Germany, haven’t lost and
won my biggest fight to date there – so you could say that fighting abroad
is no disadvantage to me.”

Before the press conference concluded, the now 31-year-old defender of the
title praised Team Nader. “I thank all of you for your hospitality. It’s
nice to fight under these conditions. I’m also awaiting an opponent inside
the squared circle who also impresses me on a personal level. Today I
received a gift from Marcos but inside the ring he should be prepared for a
hard and fair contest.” Nader returned the favour to Santos. “This will be a
fight on a level playing field. My present should show that I have a lot of
respect for him. But come November 2 it’s all about my career as a boxer and
it should be continued in a positive way for me – with a win!”

Tickets for the fight on November 2 can be purchased on
www.multiversum-schwechat.at.

Froch’s last fight at home? ‘True Brit: Froch vs. Mack’ Live Nov. 17 in U. S. on PPV

HOBOKEN, N.J. (October 30, 2012) — With a rematch against former World champion Lucian Bute still on the cards, as well as potential grudge rematches against Andre Ward and Mikkel Kessler in International Boxing Federation (IBF) super middleweight champion Carl “The Cobra’s” Froch’s future, the 34-year-old British favorite admitted that his November 17th title defense against Yusaf Mack, headlining the “True Brit” pay-per-view event (in the U.S.), could be his last fight at home in Nottingham, England.

“If the Bute fight happens,” Froch explained, “it will be in Canada, and rematches with Ward and Kessler could well happen in America and Denmark, so this could well be my last fight in Nottingham.”

Froch and Mack headline an exciting night of boxing on Nov. 17 with Tony Bellew aiming to seal his second World light heavyweight title shot in a World Boxing Council (WBC) title eliminator against Argentine invader Roberto Bolonti.

“True Brit,” presented by Matchroom Boxing, will be distributed in the United States by Integrated Sports Media for live viewing at 3:00 PM/ET – 12:00 PM/PT on both cable and satellite pay-per-view via iN Demand, DIRECTV, DISH Network and Avail-TVN for a suggested retail price of only $29.95.

“True Brit” will also be available to view via Fight Now TV, America’s only 24-hour combat sports and entertainment channel, on Cablevision channel 464 as part of the iO Gold package.

Froch (29-2, 21 KOs), rated by The Ring Magazine as the No. 1 contender in the world, captured the IBF title in his last fight on May 26 with an impressive fifth-round technical knockout of previously undefeated champion Bute (30-1). In the past four years, his last eight fights have been against a Who’s Who of the 168-pound division with victories over Bute, Glen Johnson (DEC12), Arthur Abraham (DEC12), Andre Dirrell (DEC12), Jermain Taylor (TKO12) and Jean Pascal (DEC12). Froch’s only losses were by 12-round decisions to unbeaten World Boxing Council (WBC)/World Boxing Association (WBA) king Ward in the final of the Super Six Tournament, and four-time World champion Kessler during the aforementioned tournament. Seven of his last eight opponents, excluding Dirrell, have been world champion.

IBF No.5-ranked Mack (31-4, 17 KOs) has been fighting as a light heavyweight since 2008. He lost his only world title shot to IBF 175-pound champion Tavoris Cloud by eighth-round technical knockout in 2006.

“I’m in fantastic shape and itching to get in there again,” Froch said. “The Bute fight was special and the best night of my career, but there’s no chance I’ll take my foot off the pedal on November 17. Yusaf is a dangerous customer and he has nothing to lose coming here and everything to gain. Yusaf has fought for a World title at light heavyweight and he is going to be doing everything he can to prove himself at super middleweight.”

Bellew (18-1, 12 KOs) and South American champion Bolonti (30-1, 19 KOs) will fight in the 12-round co-feature, an official WBC eliminator to become champion “Bad” Chad Dawson’s mandatory challenger, with the vacant World Boxing Council (WBC) Silver light heavyweight championship on the line.

Bellew, rated No. 10 by The Ring Magazine and No. 14 by the World Boxing Organization (WBO), has lost only once as a professional, last year in his only World title challenge fight to undefeated WBO champion Nathan Cleverly by 12-round majority decision.

Bolonti will be going for his 27th consecutive victory on Nov. 17. Fighting outside of his native Buenos Aires, Argentina for the first time, Bolonti is rated No. 5 by the WBC, No. 10 by the WBA and IBF.

The PPV card, pending time restrictions, will also showcase some of Britain’s top, young fighters, including bantamweight prospect Khalid “Kal” Yafai (3-0, 2 KOs), a 2008 Great Britain Olympian, vs. TBA, lightweight Scott “Scotty” Cardle (5-0, 1 KO) vs. Joe Elfidh (7-2), former European middleweight champion Kerry Hope (17-4, 1 KO) in a six-round tune-up vs. TBA prior to his December 8th showdown with Darren Barker, lightweight Martin J. Ward (2-0) vs. TBA, middleweight Ryan “Tank” Aston (7-1, 3 KOs) vs. Tyan Booth (11-6-1, 2 KOs), and featherweight Leigh “Leigh-thal” Wood (4-0, 1 KO) vs. Gavin Reid (6-16-1, 3 KOs). All fights and fighters are subject to change.

UNDEFEATED JUNIOR WELTERWEIGHT RISING STAR FRANKIE GOMEZ RETURNS THIS SATURDAY AGAINST MANUEL LEYVA AT THE PHOENIX CLUB IN ANAHEIM, CALIF

LOS ANGELES, October 29 – The wait is over. Following nearly a year away from the ring, unbeaten junior welterweight rising star Frankie Gomez will make his long-awaited return to active duty when he faces Mexican veteran Manuel Leyva in the eight round main event of TeleFutura’s “Solo Boxeo Tecate” from The Phoenix Club in Anaheim, Calif. this Saturday night.

Joining Gomez-Leyva on the card will be lightweight up-and-comer Jamie Kavanagh, who risks his own unbeaten slate in a lightweight eight round contest against one of his toughest tests yet in fellow prospect Ramon Valadez.

Gomez vs. Leyva, an eight round welterweight bout, is presented by Golden Boy Promotions and sponsored by Cerveza Tecate. Doors open at 6:00 p.m. PT on fight night and the first bell rings at 7:00 p.m. PT. The TeleFutura broadcast begins at11:00 p.m. ET/PT.

Tickets priced at $30 and $50 are on sale now and available for purchase online at http://fla.vor.us/1141276-Solo-Boxeo-Tecate-2-tickets/Solo-Boxeo-Tecate-2-Anaheim-Festhalle-The-Phoenix-Club-November-03-2012.html.

A 2009 United States amateur champion and 2009 Silver medalist at the world championships, East Los Angeles’ Frankie Gomez (12-0, 9 KO’s) is seen as one of the top talents to enter the professional game in years. Just 20 years old, he can do it all in the ring, and he’s proved it thus far by winning all 12 of his professional fights. Gomez will now be fighting under the guidance of Hall of Fame trainer Freddie Roach as he returns to the ring for the first time since December of 2011 when he scored a third round knockout over James Hope.

30-year-old southpaw Manuel Leyva (21-8, 12 KO’s) is a former WBC Fedecaribe lightweight and WBA Fedebol super featherweight champion who has faced off with the likes of Sharif Bogere, Carlos Molina and Joel Casamayor during his 11-year professional career. Leyva is looking forward to the challenge of going toe-to-toe with Gomez on November 3, knowing that when it comes to experience, he has a big advantage.

Dublin-born Jamie Kavanagh (11-0-1, 5 KO’s) has become a big hit in his adopted home of Los Angeles where he trains with Freddie Roach and he is likely to have a huge group of supporters on hand as he looks for his 12th professional win. Already 3-0 with two knockouts in 2012, the 22-year-old known as “The Nuisance” expects to close out the year in style when he takes on Valadez.

Like Frankie Gomez, 22-year-old Ramon Valadez (11-2, 6 KO’s) hails from East Los Angeles and also has a world of potential as a professional prospect. A pro since 2010 who has won 10 of his last 11 fights, Valadez’ most recent win was a third round knockout over then 6-0 Kevin Hoskins, showing that he knows a little something about taking a hot prospect’s “0.” He’ll look to duplicate that feat on November 3 in Anaheim against the undefeated Kavanagh.

LOS ANGELES’ LEO SANTA CRUZ SET TO DEFEND IBF BANTAMWEIGHT WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP AGAINST MEXICO’S VICTOR ZALETA ON SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 10 LIVE ON SHOWTIME® FROM STAPLES CENTER IN LOS ANGELES

LOS ANGELES, October 29 – Unbeaten in his last four fights, Mexico’s Victor Zaleta will get the biggest opportunity of his career on Saturday, November 10 when he faces unbeaten reigning World Champion Leo “Terremoto” Santa Cruz for his IBF Bantamweight World Championship in a co-featured attraction to the Abner Mares vs. Anselmo Moreno WBC Super Bantamweight World Championship at STAPLES Center in Los Angeles that will be televised live on SHOWTIME® (10 p.m. ET/PT, delayed on the West Coast).

“I am so happy to be defending my title in front of a hometown crowd at STAPLES Center,” said Santa Cruz. “I feel like I can really conquer anyone after my fight in September against Eric Morel, so Zaleta had better come prepared.”

“This fight is something I have waited for since I started fighting,” said Zaleta. “I am going to take advantage of this opportunity, become a world champion and make my name known.”

“This fight is the perfect addition to this already stellar card,” said Oscar De La Hoya, President of Golden Boy Promotions. “Leo Santa Cruz is going to do whatever he can to keep his title and remain undefeated, but I know Zaleta is coming to fight. This is going to be a toe-to-toe battle that fans are not going to want to miss.”

Santa Cruz is coming off of a career-defining win over Morel on September 15 in which the champ handed the rugged Morel his first ever knockout loss. He will bring a record of 21-0-1 with 12 KO’s into the ring on November 10 and is eager to keep his momentum going in front of his hometown fans in Los Angeles. Just 24-years-old, “Terremoto,” who wows fans and foes alike with his extremely high punch volume, went from prospect to champion in 2012 when he won his first world title in June with a dominant decision win over Vusi Malinga. Now with the fifth round stoppage over Morel under his belt, the sky’s the limit for this young Mexican-American phenom.

A professional for nearly six years and hailing from Juarez, Mexico, Victor “Nene” Zaleta (20-2-1, 10 KO’s) is a dangerous threat to anyone who meets him in the ring. A former WBC FECOMBOX and WBC CABOFE champion at 115 pounds, Zaleta’s only loss in his last 16 bouts was a decision defeat against 32-0-2 Omar Andres Narvaez in a 2011 WBO super flyweight title fight. Coming off of four consecutive victories since then, he’s ready for his first world title shot on November 10..

Mares vs. Moreno, a 12-round battle for Mares’ WBC Super Bantamweight World Championship taking place on November 10 at STAPLES Center in Los Angeles, is promoted by Golden Boy Promotions and sponsored by Corona and AT&T. In the co-featured attractions, Los Angeles’ own Leo “Terremoto” Santa Cruz puts his IBF Bantamweight World Championship on the line against Victor “Nene” Zaleta, hard-hitting junior middleweight Alfredo “El Perro” Angulo, of Los Angeles by way of Mexicali, Mexico, makes his highly anticipated return against Raul Casarez in a 12-round bout. The SHOWTIME® CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING telecast begins live at 10:00 p.m. ET/PT (delayed on the West Coast). Preliminary fights will air live on SHOWTIME EXTREME® beginning at 8:00 p.m. ET/PT (delayed on the West Coast).

Tickets, priced at $200, $100, $50 and $25, not including applicable service charges and taxes, are on sale at all Ticketmaster outlets, online at www.ticketmaster.com, by phone at (800) 745-3000 and at the STAPLES Center Box Office.

Rahimi and Mbelwa make weight for “Fight 4 Peace”

Tomorrow (Tuesday, October 30th) Hamid Rahimi and Said Mbelwa will make history when they step into the ring for the “Fight 4 Peace” in Kabul, the first professional boxing event in the history of Afghanistan. The World Boxing Organisation officially sanctioned the 12 round middleweight contest for the vacant WBO Intercontinental “Peace” Championship which means that the winner will enter the top 15 of the WBO middleweight ratings.

At today’s official weigh-in both contenders made the weight. Rahimi who emphasized again that the “Fight 4 Peace” is “a dream coming true” weighed in at 72.4 kg (159.6 lbs.) while Mbelwa brought exactly the limit at 72.5 kg (160 lbs.).

Said Mbelwa (19-8-4, 12 KOs) who fought four the WBO Youth world cruiserweight championship in December 2011, losing to Agron Dzila from Switzerland, renewed his threat to knock out Rahimi in four rounds: “I said it before and I’ll say it again: The “Fight 4 Peace” is an important event and I respect Hamid Rahimi and his team for what they are doing. But once that bell rings I will do all I can to be victorious and take the “Peace Belt” home to Tanzania. Unfortunately, they got the wrong man. I will crash the party.”

Local hero and “Peace Fighter” Rahimi wasn’t intimated at all, stating “My people and my country are giving me so much positive energy. I simply cannot lose this fight. I will win for Afghanistan and send the peace message out to the world. ”

Calderon announces retirement

After his recent knockout loss to Moses Fuentes, former two division champion Ivan Calderon announced his retirement according to Dan Rafael of espn.com

“This was difficult because (boxing is) something I love, but I want to say that I’m doing this not because I’m old or tired. I’m doing this because I want to work with the kids and youth, bringing them my knowledge and tips,” Calderon said at a ceremony attended by his family, trainers Jose “Cheche” Sanchez and Felix Pagan Pintor, Guaynabo mayor Hector O’Neill, WBO president Francisco “Paco” Valcarcel and several top Puerto Rican fighters, including junior lightweight titlist Roman “Rocky” Martinez and former titleholders Juan Manuel Lopez and Wilfredo Vazquez Jr.

“I want to be an example for all my fellow boxers that when it is time (to retire) it is time, no matter if we are rich or poor. The health is what matters. I want to thank all (the fans).”

“For a few years he was the best boxer in boxing,” said Calderon’s co-promoter Bob Arum. “I think he’s a Hall of Famer. I think he certainly is. His accomplishments match another fighter I promoted who was a little guy, Michael Carbajal, who is a Hall of Famer, and rightly so. And I think Calderon should be also.”

“He was a delight because he took pride in his skills,” Arum said. “In other words, he was somebody who loved boxing for the sport. When you talk about the sweet science, he was a practitioner. He wasn’t a big puncher. His whole ability was to be this absolutely super incredible boxer and he gloried in that. He was a small guy, but there was an appreciation of him for his art of boxing.”
