Maidana to face Soto Karass on Alvarez – Lopez bill

Dan Rafael of espn.com is reporting that Jr.Welterweight beltholder Marcos Maidana will give up his title to face Jesus Soto Karass as part of the Saul Alvarez – Josesito Lopez Super Welterweight title card on September 15th in Las Vegas.

The show will be a quadruple header televised by Showtime.

“Well, Maidana is definitely not making 140 pounds anymore,” said Maidana’s manager Sebastian Contursi. “He is just too big for it now after years of making the 140 limit. That’s why we decided to give it a shot at 147 pounds and thought that Jesus Soto Karass is a very good opponent since he just fights. Could be a war.

“Golden Boy Promotions thought that adding Maidana to the Sept. 15 card would improve it, so they offered us that fight and we took it. This time Maidana would have proper time to adjust and to improve under (new trainer) Robert Garcia.”

“We speculated until now about keeping the title but we will give it up,” Contursi said.

CHRISTY MARTIN vs MIA ST. JOHN II: TWO CHAMPIONS IN THEIR FINAL BLOCKBUSTER BATTLE MEET AT FRESNO PRESS CONFERENCE

Women’s boxing has produced a series of great fighters, but two iconic names stand above the rest – Christy Martin and Mia St. John, and today they were in Fresno for a major Press Conference prior to their epic battle in just four weeks. Before a large crowd at the Downtown Club, Martin and St. John, along with local dignitaries, spoke of the importance of their upcoming fight, as well as the state of female boxing.

Today’s press conference was the beginning of the four week countdown, when nearly a decade after their first bout in 2002, fight fans in the Central Valley will finally have the chance to see Martin and St. John meet again, in FINAL VICTORY. But this time the stakes will be even higher, as these two champions will fight for the final time and it will be for the WBC World Super Welterweight Belt in a big night of championship boxing on Tuesday evening, August 14th that will be presented by Table Mountain Casino, in association with Roy Englebrecht Promotions.

For Martin, this is her opportunity to reach the 50-win milestone against a heated rival looking to keep her from that mark. More importantly, it will be a fitting celebration of a career and life thought to be over when “The Coal Miner’s Daughter” was shot and stabbed by her ex-husband Jim in 2010. Yet despite the odds, Martin not only survived, but she returned to the ring in 2011. Now she wants to finish the most memorable career in women’s boxing history by defeating St. John. “I am excited about this opportunity to get my 50th win against Mia St John to finish my career,” said Martin. “I am honored to fight for the WBC World Title at Table Mountain Casino and look forward to becoming a World Champion once again. This time I will KO Mia, that’s as good a guarantee as you get.”

St. John has her own reasons for wanting this fight, and the way she sees it, this matchup is all about respect and redemption. In 2002, despite her stellar 26-1-1 record, it took an exciting 10 round war with Martin to earn the acclaim from the boxing world that she deserved. Since then, “The Knockout” has continued to be one of the sport’s great ambassadors, in and out of the ring, and all that’s left for her is to even the score with her greatest rival in Christy Martin. “I’ve waited nearly 10 years for this rematch,” stated St John. “I know I out-boxed Christy in the last fight, but this time I am going to BEAT her. Now we’ll see who the real WBC Champion is, La Gallina or La Guerrera.”

“Since I promoted my first female pro boxing bout in December of 1995 on a Battle In The Ballroom show at the Irvine Marriott, I am proud to say that Roy Englebrecht Promotions has promoted more female boxing bouts than any other fight promoter in history,” stated Englebrecht. “To now have the opportunity along with Table Mountain Casino who stepped up to make this tremendous FINAL VICTORY event happen, and work with two boxing as well as sports icons in Christy and Mia, is an honor and privilege, and believe me fight fans in the Central Valley will be in for a special evening when these two ladies meet in the ring with a legitimate world championship on the line.”

The Final Victory show which will also include four undercard bouts featuring some local Fresno area boxers, will be held in the Events Center at Table Mountain Casino in Friant, California, which is located just 15 miles outside Fresno. Tickets for this night of championship boxing will be priced at $70 VIP, $65 Gold, $60 Reserved, and $55 General Admission, and can be purchased at www.tmcasino.com or at Table Mountain Casino. Doors will open at 6pm with the first bout scheduled to begin at 6:30pm, and you must be 18 years or older to attend the show.

Needless to say, this event is as historic as it is compelling, making it the must see fight of the Summer of 2012.

CAMPILLO AND KOVALEV HEADLINE SEPT 21st NBC SPORTS NETWORK “FIGHT NIGHT”

Totowa, NJ – July 13, 2012 –

Gabriel “Chico Guapo” Campillo, 21-4-1, 8 KO’s, the #3 light heavyweight in the world, will take on Russia’s tough Sergey Kovalev, 18-0-1, 16 KO’s, rated #13, on Friday, September 21st when the critically acclaimed NBC Sports Network Fight Night Boxing Series returns to the Events Center at the Sands Casino Resort Bethlehem in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. The 2,000 seat arena was sold out with standing room only for the June 1st NBCSN Fight Night show at the Sands.

The show, which is slated to begin at 9 p.m. ET on NBC Sports Network, will be a co-promotion among Peltz Boxing, Sampson Boxing and Main Events.

Managed by World Middleweight Champion Sergio Martinez, Campillo of Madrid was last seen in February losing a razor-close highly controversial split decision to IBF Champion Tavoris Cloud in Texas. In 2010 Campillo, (21-4-1, 8 KO’s) lost another disputed decision to current IBF Light Heavyweight title holder Beibut Shumenov in Las Vegas. Last year he drew with Karo Murat in a title eliminator in Murat’s adopted home of Germany.

“Campillo has arguably beaten two world champions and the number one contender without receiving the decisions,” said promoter Kathy Duva of Main Events. “After he stopped Darnell Boone on NBCSN in June, Kovalev stated that he is ready to fight for the world title. On September 21st he will get the opportunity to prove to the world that he is worthy in a very tough fight. A win for Campillo would put him right back into the title picture.”

Campillo’s promoter, Sampson Lewkowicz said, “Campillo is very happy about this fight. This is well deserved. He got robbed in his last 3 – 4 fights, including Vegas, Germany and Texas.” Lewkowicz added, “Campillo will spend the next two months training very hard with manager Sergio Martinez and trainer Pablo Sarmiento. He is a very tough fighter. This will be a great fight and I guarantee that no one in that arena will know who the winner will be until the end.”

In the twelve round defense of his WBC Continental Americas Welterweight belt, popular welterweight Ronald Cruz of Bethlehem, 17-0, 12 KO’s, will make his second “Fight Night” appearance when he faces Antwone Smith, 21-4-1, 12 KO’s, in a classic crossroads match-up. Cruz won his belt on the NBCSN Fight Night show on June 1st with a unanimous 12-round decision over Prenice Brewer, of Cleveland, OH. Smith is a walk-in styled fighter like Cruz and this fight promises to be a boxing fan’s contest. Cruz is currently ranked No. 12 IBF and No. 15 WBC as a welterweight.

The ticket prices and undercard will be announced shortly.

It’s SHOWTIME for Morales

One of the hottest prospects in the sport gets his opportunity at a coming out party next Friday night, as super bantamweight Roman Morales takes on tough Alexis Santiago in a Showtime-televised co-featured attraction emanating from the Chumash Casino Resort in Santa Ynez, California.

Morales (10-0, 6 KOs) of San Ardo, California has impressed virtually everyone that has seen him fight in person or in his two previous televised outings. This time around Morales is not just a swing bout that makes TV after a quick knockout. Morales knows he is going to be under Showtime’s bright lights and in front of the camera before his night begins. However, that knowledge fails to effect the composed Morales as he goes into his biggest fight to date. “It’s like any other fight,” says Morales. “I know I am ready because I’ve trained hard. I just have to do what I have to do in the ring.”

Helping keep the 20-year-old wunderkind grounded is his trainer and father figure Rodolfo Tapia. “He’s still the same humble guy,” reveals Tapia. “That’s one thing I always put in his mind. ‘You could be a world champion, but to be recognized as a good boxer you have to be the same person.’ You don’t want people around you to get the impression that you think you are a bad ass or something. You have to be a humble person, and you will have more people around you and cheering for you. He is still in the same place with his feet on the ground, and it has to be that way for him to become a world champion. Otherwise, everything we have been working for will go into the garbage.”

Aiding Morales’ stable maturity is likely all the rounds he has logged with top professional fighters since before he turned pro himself in early 2011. Morales has become a favorite sparring partner of world champion Nonito Donaire Jr. among other top pros. Recently, Morales took to the ring with former prized prospect Charles Huerta in preparation for July 20th.

“With Huerta, he’s pretty strong,” says Morales. “He pushed me forward a couple times. With him, I feel his punches because he hits pretty hard. And he makes me work, so I know I have conditioning to last every round of the fight. I was just trying to be smart when I was sparring him. It was really good work and I know it helps me out a lot.”

Morales’ opponent is the dangerous Alexis Santiago (11-2-1, 5 KOs) of Phoenix, Arizona in an eight-round bout. Santiago may be best known for giving unbeaten Randy Caballero a tough fight one year ago. “He’s good, but he made mistakes in that fight with Caballero, which we watched on YouTube,” says Morales’ trainer Tapia. “He leaves his body open a lot, which is a big mistake against Roman. That is one of the things we always work on, is going to the body and then to the head. We’ve been working hard on that. The kid is good. He’s aggressive, but when he feels Roman’s power and sees how he works….I’m sure it’s going to be a good fight.”

Team Morales admits the selection of Santiago as an opponent was to give them a chance to tell the world that they have the better prospect if the comparison is to be drawn with Caballero. “He’s way better than Caballero,” says Morales’ manager Repo Ric without hesitation. “Caballero only has three punches. That’s all he got. He has a jab, a wild left hook and a straight right. That’s all he has. He don’t have anything else. And his defense is terrible. They are going to keep feeding him bums. He just fought my friend from St. Louis, 5-5. You can’t have a title and you are fighting bums. They ought to be ashamed of themselves putting him in there with a kid like that. I definitely made the fight because of Randy Caballero. We are going to take down Santiago to show Randy what we’d do to him. But Randy will never fight him anyway. The other guy I want is Jonathan Arrellano, that kid has some type of title belt. But, none of these guys want to fight Roman. So Santiago will do it.”

Morales himself, honest to his core, admits that he does have the goal of outshining Caballero’s hard-fought victory over Santiago last July. “Yes, of course,” said Morales when asked about the inevitable comparison. “That’s what I am going for. I am going to put everything I got up in the ring and try to show my best. I am going to try and do a better job than he did.”

In addition to preparing for a tough assignment in a featured televised fight, Morales has another fight on his schedule next month. Morales is slated to headline an event at the Tulare County Fairgrounds in Tulare, California on August 24th against rough customer Jonathan Alcantara in another eight-rounder. Though that fight will be close to home, and Morales undoubtedly already has friends bugging him for tickets, the composed future champion remains focused on the task at hand.

“I am not even thinking about the other fight,” says Morales of his scheduled showdown with Alcantara. “I am just thinking about this fight and training hard for this fight. Once I finish this fight, I will think about the other fight. But until then, I am just thinking about this one right now.”

Just seven days away from ‘showtime,’ Morales sounds ready to show and prove. “I am pretty sure he’s coming ready, and I am ready,” says Morales. “So I think it is going to be a really good fight. I am just ready to go out there and fight him already. It’s fairly close to my area, so a lot of people are going to come out to see me and I am plan to give them a good fight.”

Tickets for the July 20th event, promoted by Gary Shaw Productions, are available online at StarTickets.com.

Tickets for the August 24th event, promoted by One World Boxing Promotions, are available online at TulareFair.org or by calling 559-686-4707.

Three-time world champion Anthony Mundine makes US debut Saturday night on WealthTV PPV Australian targeting Mayweather

LAS VEGAS (July 12, 2012) – Three-time world champion Anthony “The Man” Mundine (43-4, 25 KOs) makes his United States debut Saturday night (July 14), headlining the “When Worlds Collide” pay-per-view event, live from Pearl Theater at Palms Resort Casino in Las Vegas.

Mundine takes on tough veteran Bronco “Superman” McKart (54-9-1, 32 KOs), a two-time world champion, in the 10-round main event for the vacant International Boxing Federation (IBF) North American Middleweight Championship.

The WealthTV PPV co-feature matches a pair of world-rated light heavyweights, Russian invader Dmitry Surkhotsky (18-1, 13 KOs) and Cornelius “Da Beast” White (19-1, 16 KOs), in a entertaining 12-round bout for the vacant IBF International title.

The “When Worlds Collide” PPV, presented by Millennium Events, Inc. in association with WealthTV, for live viewing at 9:00 PM/ET – 6:00 PM/PT on both cable and satellite pay-per-view via Comcast, Time Warner Cable, AT&T U-Verse, Cox Communications, Verizon FiOS TV, Charter Communications, DirecTV, and many other carriers for a suggested retail price of only $29.95.

The Mundine vs. McKart fight started from a simple question asked earlier this year, in-house by WealthTV’s boxing staff, regarding a viable opponent who could defeat Floyd Mayweather, Jr.

“After much debate with boxing experts and insiders,” explained Charles Herring, president of WealthTV, “Mundine’s name kept coming up. In late March, we aggressively pursued the WBA purse bid for the Mundine vs. Trout fight. Our representative went to Panama City with a substantial check in hand but the bid never went through. Our second attempt, however, was successful and we’re pleased to be the network that is bringing this three-time world champion to the boxing capital of the world, Las Vegas, for his United States boxing debut.

“Mundine has to get past a highly-skilled boxer and proven veteran, Bronco McKart, before he starts thinking about a fight with Mayweather. McKart’s in the best shape of his life and ready to take on Mundine. McKart’s skills and legendary work ethic are quite impressive and we believe this has all the makings to be a Fight of the Year candidate. It’s going to be war in the ring Saturday night as both fighters try to make strong statements.”

Demonstrating its commitment to becoming a powerhouse in world-class, live professional boxing, the Mundine vs. McKart card represents WealthTV’s fifth major live boxing event in the last nine months and its first pay-per-view event in the U.S.

“We’re committed to providing top quality championship boxing to our viewers,” WealthTV CEO Robert Herring commented. “We’ll air exciting cards live on the network for free, yet when the purses get too large, we’ll feature pay-per-view events. Our staff is quickly gaining boxing expertise and is focused on showcasing a major boxing event about once a month.”

Mundine vs. McKart on WealthTV PPV

Fighting out of his native Australia, Mundine first captured the World Boxing Association 168-pound title in 2003, taking a unanimous 12-round decision from Antwun Echols. The dangerous Australian recaptured the WBA super middleweight title in 2007, stopping in-country rival Sam Soliman in the ninth round. In his last fight on October 19, 2011, Mundine became the Interim WBA light middleweight champion by way of a 12-round unanimous decision over Rigoberto Alvarez.

Mundine’s impressive resume includes victories against other even more notable opponents such as bitter arch-rival Danny Green, a former WBA light heavyweight champion, and current IBF middleweight world title-holder Daniel Geale. Three of Mundine’s four career losses have been to world champions Mikkel Kessler, Manny Siaca and Sven Ottke.

McKart, fighting out of Munroe, Illinois, won the World Boxing Organization (WBO) middleweight crown in 1996, registering a ninth-round technical knockout of Santos Cardona. McKart added the International Boxing Association (IBA) title belt to his collection in 1997. The battle-tested McKart has defeated world champions Raul Marquez and Aaron Davis, as well as world title challengers Enrique Ornelas and Alex Bunema during the course of his 20-year professional career.

Bronco “Superman” McKart

Sukhotsky lost his only world title shot to WBO champion Juergen Braehmer by decision in 2009. The rugged Russian and former European 175-pound champion has battled his way back to the top of the world ratings at No. 3 in the WBO, No. 5 in the WBA and No. 12 in the IBF.

White, rated No. 11 by the World Boxing Council (WBC), has relocated in Houston from Chicago to work with his highly-respected head trainer, Ronnie Shields. White’s most impressive win to date was a 2011 decision over 2004 Cuban Olympian Yordanis Despaigne.

“KNOCKOUT KINGS” REIGN SUPREME ON CELEBRATED MEXICAN INDEPENDENCE DAY HOLIDAY WEEKEND IN UNPARALELLED QUADRUPLE-HEADER

LOS ANGELES (July 11, 2012) – Mexican Independence Day weekend will come alive in one-of-a-kind fashion on Saturday, September 15 when “Knockout Kings” featuring undefeated Mexican sensation Canelo Alvarez taking on boxing’s breakout star and upset-minded Josesito Lopez for Canelo’s World Boxing Council (WBC) Super Welterweight World Championship, takes place at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, live on SHOWTIME. Fans can expect fireworks all night long with the unparalleled quadruple-header, which also features WBC Featherweight World Champion Jhonny Gonzalez defending his title against former World Champion Daniel Ponce De Leon.

“Knockout Kings,” a tremendous evening of pure Mexican power and pride, is promoted by Golden Boy Promotions and Canelo Promotions in association with Goossen Tutor Promotions and Thompson Boxing Promotions and sponsored by Corona, DeWalt Tools and AT&T. The quadruple-header will take place at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nev. and will be televised live on SHOWTIME. Additional co-featured fights will be announced soon.

SHOWTIME Sports will also produce a new edition of its ALL ACESS sports documentary series. ALL ACCESS: Canelo vs. Lopez will premiere on SHOWTIME, with multiple replays on additional SHOWTIME and CBS platforms. The exhibition schedule will be announced shortly.

“We know the exceptional talent we have in Mexican superstar Canelo, and certainly Josesito Lopez deserves the opportunity to face him after his stunning upset victory over Victor Ortiz on June 23,” said Oscar de la Hoya, President of Golden Boy Promotions. “It is going to be another prideful Mexican Independence Day weekend for Mexican and Mexican-American fans having their most celebrated fighter, Canelo, fighting that night along with Jhonny Gonzalez and Daniel Ponce De Leon, who are going to deliver their own electrifying championship battle.”

“It is a great pleasure for Golden Boy Promotions to be working with MGM Resorts International and SHOWTIME Sports on this exciting night of boxing,” said Richard Schaefer, CEO, Golden Boy Promotions. “To be able to showcase top-caliber boxing talent in Canelo, Josesito Lopez, Jhonny Gonzalez and Ponce De Leon on the same show packs a lot of power and pride into a tremendous evening for attendees and viewers watching at home. It’s also a special gift for Mexican and Mexican American fans who have supported the sport for so long to have Canelo appear once again on Mexican Independence Day weekend. If there is anyone who deserves a shot at Canelo, it’s Josesito because he showed that heart and will can determine the outcome of any fight. I’ve never seen a fighter show that.”

“SHOWTIME has fully committed to promoting this tremendous night of boxing as if it were a pay-per-view, but instead is offering this quadruple-header to all boxing fans across the country,” continued Schaefer. “We are very pleased that CBS will also be committed to promoting this event on various platforms.”

“We are excited to be able to offer SHOWTIME subscribers a chance to see boxing’s newest star, Canelo Alvarez, in what promises to be a dramatic fight,” said Stephen Espinoza, Executive Vice President and General Manager, SHOWTIME Sports. “Canelo’s talent and charisma has re-energized boxing and drawn legions of casual fans to the sport. Josesito Lopez may not be as well-known as Canelo, but he has already shown that it would be a mistake for any opponent to overlook Josesito Lopez. Many counted him out in his last fight against Victor Ortiz, but he stunned the SHOWTIME audience and boxing fans worldwide with his gutsy performance and earned his shot at Canelo. This match-up, and this entire card as a whole, promises to be non-stop action and we are proud to deliver explosive fights to our viewers.”

Richard Sturm, president of sports and entertainment for MGM Resorts International, said, “We look forward to celebrating Mexican Independence Day weekend with one of the most exciting events of the summer. There is no doubt that Golden Boy Promotions will deliver a fight that has a major impact on boxing fans worldwide.”

Already a phenom in his home country of Mexico, Canelo turned professional at the age of 15 and has amassed a record of 40-0-1, with 29 knockouts. Since 2008, he has knocked out 14 of 18 opponents and is coming off of a dominant unanimous decision win over future Hall of Famer and former Three-Division World Champion Sugar Shane Mosley in May. Now, the 21-year-old considered to be one of boxing’s fastest-rising stars will make his SHOWTIME debut on Mexico’s biggest holiday weekend of the year, Mexican Independence Day weekend. Canelo will look to continue his meteoric rise to international superstardom as he follows in the footsteps of De La Hoya, his childhood idol and current promoter.

“I am happy to be fighting Josesito Lopez on Mexican Independence Day weekend and to give all of our fans a tremendous battle,” said Canelo. “I was ringside for his fight against Victor Ortiz and saw the talent he possesses. It will be very competitive, but nothing can take away my desire to be the best in the sport. I am also excited to be fighting for the Mexican people and Mexican American fans on Mexican Independence Day weekend. I look forward to showing so many people who will be watching me across the United States that I love being a champion. I want them to think of me as one of the greatest fighters ever.”

In June, Lopez emerged from relative obscurity and scored the biggest win of his career over the heavily favored Ortiz in the main event of a SHOWTIME Championship Boxing. Lopez shocked the boxing world by stopping Ortiz, one of today’s most popular and talented fighters. Lopez (30-4, 18 KO’s) of Riverside, Calif., has the opportunity to recreate his “Rocky moment” on Sept. 15, when he challenges for his first world title against a man that many believe to be boxing’s next superstar.

“I am so happy to have the chance to continue my career fighting another great champion in Canelo Alvarez especially on such a big weekend like Mexican Independence Day,” said Lopez. “I know they put me in the ring with Victor Ortiz to have me beat and now they are doing the same thing with Canelo. I was a big underdog with Ortiz and now I’m a bigger underdog with Canelo, but I’m up for the challenge.”

Also featured on the SHOWTIME telecast will be reigning Mexico City’s Jhonny Gonzalez (52-7, 45 KO’s) who once ruled the bantamweight division with his iron fists, winning two world titles and defeating the likes of Fernando Montiel, Irene Pacheco and recently inducted Hall of Famer Mark “Too Sharp” Johnson. Reinventing himself at featherweight, where he has gone 12-0 with 11 knockouts, he won the WBC 126-pound title by stopping Hozumi Hasegawa in the fourth round in April 2011. Four title defenses, including an April 2012 decision over Elio Rojas, have followed, and on September 15, the 30-year old will seek a fifth successful defense against De Leon.

“This is a fight I have been wanting for a long time and now to have the opportunity to do it for my Mexican people is so great,” said Gonzalez. “That is a big weekend for everyone and I am going to show the world why I am still the best in the division.”

Power puncher Daniel Ponce De Leon (43-4, 35 KO’s) has long been one of boxing’s most dependable warriors. Former WBO Junior Featherweight World Champion De Leon defended his crown six times during his 2005-08 reign. After losing the title to Juan Manuel Lopez in 2008, he began the next chapter of his career, winning nine of his next 11 fights following that defeat. In 2012, wins over Omar Estrella (KO6) and Eduardo Lazcano (W10) at featherweight have put him in line for a shot at 126-pound gold, but to get it, he will have to beat countryman Gonzalez on the 15th of September.

“Gonzalez is a very good fighter, but I have the experience and ability to beat him and take his title from him,” said De Leon. “The Mexican fans will all be watching and there is going to be tremendous pressure on all of us to win our bouts and look great doing it. I will become the new champion that night and my career will move up to a new level.”

Tickets priced at $400, $300, $150, $50 and $25, not including applicable service charges and taxes, go on sale Saturday, July 14 at Noon PT. Ticket sales are limited to ten (10) per person. To charge by phone with a major credit card, call Ticketmaster at (800) 745-3000. Tickets also are available for purchase at www.mgmgrand.com or www.ticketmaster.com.

Khan gets WBA title back before Garcia clash

Amir Khan was reinstated as the WBA Super Light champion due to the circumstances around Lamont Peterson and thus, according to Dan Rafael of espn.com sets up a unification bout with WBC champion Danny Garcia this Saturday night in Las Vegas.

“This decision was taken after the positive doping result of the American Lamont Peterson, confirmed by the medical experts,” the WBA said in a statement.

“It’s thrilling to know that because I think they’ve seen there was some wrong and they have made the first move,” Khan said of the WBA. “I’m glad that the title will be on the line now. It just makes the fight even more exciting and also having two world titles makes the fight even bigger.

“Me and Danny are young fighters. He’s 24. I’m 25 and to be in this position fighting a huge fight with so many titles on the line I think is brilliant. We just hope that the IBF may do the same thing, put that title on the line, as well, which will be coming on this unification. I think the WBA made a great choice and I just want to thank them.”

MAJEWSKI STOPS FITZPATRICK ON CUTS TO CAPTURE NABF MIDDLEWEIGHT CROWN—FIGHT CARD NOW ON DEMAND ON GFL

ATLANTIC CITY, NJ (July 11, 2012)—This past Saturday night, Patrick Majewski scored a stoppage over Chris Fitzpatrick after five rounds to capture the vacant NABF Middleweight title after it was “Controversially” ruled that Fitzpatrick could not continue due to cut.

That fight plus a full seven fight undercard can now be seen on-demand for just $9.99 on www.gfl.tv by clicking: http://www.gfl.tv/Events/Fight/Boxing/Peltz_Boxing_at_Ballys__Majewski_vs_Fitzpatrick/1563

The fight was competitive throughout as Majewski was especially effective with the right hand. Fitzpatrick suffered a nasty cut in the second round over his left eye. Despite the large blood flow, Fitzpatrick showed no signs of discomfort and fought valiantly through the stream of blood running down his face. The cut, which was deep, did not bleed much in round five but the fight was stopped much to the dismay of Fitzpatrick and his team after the frame.

With the win, Majewski raises his mark to 19-1 with thirteen knockouts. Fitzpatrick is 15-2.

Undefeated Light Heavyweight Lavarn “Baby Bowe” Harvell scored two knockdowns before stopping Mojeed Okedara in the first round of their six round Light Heavyweight bout.

It was the fourth straight knockout for Harvell (12-0, 7 KO’s) of Atlantic City. Okdedara of Nigeria was making his American debut is now 9-6.

2012 U.S. Olympian Jesse “Hard Work” Hart made it two straight first round stoppages as he used a vicious body assault to put out Steven Chadwick (0-4) at 2:38 of their Middleweight bout

Nelson (7-0) of Philadelphia won by scores of 60-54, 59-55 & 59-55. Rodriguez is 5-2-1.

Dan Biddle won a six round majority decision over Pedro Martinez in a Heavyweight bout.

Raphael Luna (4-5-2) of Albany, New York and Osnel Charles (9-3-1) of Atlantic City fought to a spirited draw in a six round Welterweight bout. Scores were 58-56 each way and 57-57.

Mark Rideout made a successful pro debut by earning a hard fought four round unanimous decision over hard charging Randy Easton in a Heavyweight bout.

In the opening bout of the evening, Anthony Prescott scored a scary second round knockout over DeAndre Phillips in a battle of pro debuting Welterweight.

Prescott landed a thumping right to the head that sent Phillips down and out for about seven minutes. Phillips, with help from paramedics was able to walk out under his own power.

It is Hurricane Season in the Yucatan

Brampton, Ontario, Canada – Following up on her sensational victory on May 4th over Yolanda Segura, Ana Julaton (11-3-1, 1 KO) steps back into the ring on August 3rd in Kanasin, Mexico against the very dangerous Magali “The Magician” Rodriquez (6-4-1, 3 KOs).

Rodriquez, from Monterrey, Mexico, sports a misleading record as she has been in with some of the best – including two distance fights against the undefeated Janeth Perez, the current WBA Bantamweight Champion. That contest on February 4th was scored a draw when many of the experts at ringside had Rodriquez taking the decision.

“The Magician” relishes the opportunity to pull off a bit of magic in her native Mexico with an upset of Julaton and put her name back into the mix of talented female Mexican stars that have burst onto the world boxing scene.

Julaton’s promoter Orion Sports Management with their partners, Yucatan Boxing, have been staging shows in the Yucatan for a number of years and “The Hurricane” is right at home as a result. This will be her fourth major contest there and she brings not only local support in the Yucatan, where she has been nicknamed, “The Yucatan Princess,” but also millions of followers back in the Philippines where her career has an eager following based on the exposure provided by the GMA Network. Such will be the case on August 3rd, as GMA has confirmed their intention to continue covering Julaton as she works her way back to the World Championship.

“This another major fight for me,” stated Julaton. “Rodriquez is no walk in the park. She will bring it all on August 3rd and I have to be prepared accordingly.” Julaton, who yearns to fight in the Philippines, went on to say, “I have asked Allan Tremblay, my Promoter, to make that happen and I know he is undertaking discussions for a contest at home either late in 2012 or early 2013. That will be the ultimate for me. A proud Filipina finally getting a chance to fight in front of my many fans who have been supporting me for so long. This is my dream.”

Also appearing on the card are two of Orion Sports highly touted prospects, junior welterweight Felix “El Destino” Mercedes and cruiserweight Milos “The Buffalo Bomber” Pantelic.

In a series of entries on his Twitter account, Martirosyan wrote this on Thursday: “Now [it’s] time to focus on Saturday night, then we focus on this Lara fight. … Guys, there is no ifs. I said yes to the Lara fight. Already 100 percent. I’m [on] board. I just wanna focus on Saturday night, then we get back to Lara.”

Froch, Bute to rematch in 2013 after interim bouts

According to Dan Rafael of espn.com, IBF Super Middleweight champion Carl Froch and the man he beat Lucian Bute will meet in a rematch next year after they each take interim bouts this fall.

Froch stopped Bute in round five on May 26 in Froch’s hometown of Nottingham, England and rematch will take place in Bute’s adopted hometown of Montreal.

“Froch versus Bute has already gone down as one of the greatest nights in British boxing history,” said Froch’s promoter Eddie Hearn. “It generated record television audiences and a sold-out arena where fans were treated to what many respected pundits and fighters have described as one of the best atmospheres ever felt in a British fight. Of course, like any fighter, Lucian is keen to avenge this defeat and, as per our agreement, has the opportunity to try to make that happen.

“Both myself and Lucian’s promoter, Jean Bedard (of InterBox) feel that it is in the best interests of both fighters and any future rematch that both fighters will take an interim fight later this year. Froch versus Bute II in Montreal is a massive event and I’m sure that impressive victories for both men later this year will add further fuel to the fire.”

“We will be looking to announce an opponent for Carl in the next few weeks for another big fight in the U.K.,” he said.

“That was not the real Lucian Bute in that Nottingham ring on May 26,” said Bute, who had made nine defenses before being cut down by Froch. “I spent the last few weeks reflecting about what went wrong, what happened, and the only thing that is crystal clear in my mind is that I want my rematch with Carl Froch as soon as possible.”

Said Bedard, “There is no hiding the fact that the result on May 26 was hard on everyone. But even in defeat, in the locker room after the fight and the days following the loss, I still felt Lucian had the fire in his belly to come back stronger and demand his rematch with Froch. Matchroom is a great organization to work with and I have been speaking to Eddie once or twice a week since May 26. I almost know his number by heart.”
