EXPERIENCE IS THE KEY FOR LIAKHOVICH AGAINST JENNINGS

LAS VEGAS – At 35 years of age, former WBO heavyweight champion Sergei Liakhovich, 25-4, 16 KOs, has been around the boxing block a few times. However, the mileage he has logged in the ring figures to be his biggest advantage in his next fight. Liakhovich will take on the younger and perhaps hungrier Bryant Jennings, 27, in a 10-round heavyweight contest on the latest edition of the nationally televised “Fight Night” boxing series on the NBC Sports Network, March 24th from Brooklyn, NY. The broadcast begins at 10PM ET.

“The biggest problem for him will be my experience,” said Liakhovich.

And that experience is formidable. He had an all-star amateur career with a 145-15 record and numerous titles, trophies and medals to his credit. As a professional, Sergei has met top heavies like Lamon Brewster, Shannon Briggs, Nikolay Valuev, Dominick Guinn and Maurice Harris. Liakhovich did not beat them all, but he learned valuable lessons that make him the fighter he is today.

His career-best performance was his title-winning effort against Lamon Brewster in 2006. In that fight, Liakhovich seemed to come from nowhere to beat the streaking Brewster who had defeated Wladimir Klitschko and a long line of other A-list big men. But Liakhovich defied the odds to capture the WBO belt by unanimous decision.

“What I remember most is the fight,” Liakhovich said. “I was just 29 years old. I fought Brewster for the world title and I won the world title.”

In the six years that have passed since that fight, Liakhovich has experienced a few bumps in the road, including his last bout, a TKO loss to Robert Helenius in Germany. But Liakhovich feels that the trials he has encountered have made him battle-tested and ready for the second half of his career.

“You have to learn from your mistakes and move forward,” Liakhovich said. “You have to take the experiences with you. Look forward, move forward.”

The relatively inexperienced Bryant Jennings, 12-0, 5 KOs, played leap-frog in January when he stepped up at the last minute to fill the void left when fellow-Philadelphian Eddie Chambers pulled out the first “Fight Night” main event. Chambers was to have fought Liakhovich that night, but the fighter’s exit forced promoter Main Events and match maker J Russell Peltz to find a whole new feature bout. Jennings answered the call, and won that bout against another undefeated prospect, Maurice Byarm. The victory in his very first main event thrust Jennings into the spotlight and put him on a path that Liakhovich thinks he may not be quite ready for.

“I saw the fight,” Liakhovich said. “He is young, has decent speed, decent power. He is a decent fighter. I will take him into the deep water and see how he does.”

Speaking from his Las Vegas training camp, Liakhovich said that he and trainer Eddie Mustafa Muhammad have prepared for anything that Jennings brings into the fight. And although the former champion says that his goal is to again fight for the world title, he’s not getting ahead of himself.

“First is first,” Liakhovich said. “I’m focused on beating Jennings. We’ll see what he has and then we’ll go from there.”

FOR BRYANT JENNINGS THE TIME IS NOW

NORTH PHILADELPHIA – Upstart heavyweight Bryant Jennings, 12-0, 5 KOs, believes that when opportunity knocks, you have no choice but to answer. In January, Jennings stepped into the main event of the inaugural telecast of NBC Sports Network’s “Fight Night” boxing series by seizing one of those unlikely opportunities that sometimes come along. On one week’s notice, Jennings accepted a fight with another undefeated prospect and came away with a nationally televised 10-round victory, and for the first time in his career, left a fight with a little buzz surrounding his name. That buzz translated into yet another opportunity for Jennings on the very next NBC Sports Network “Fight Night” show, promoted by Main Events, March 24th. The fight will be part of fantastic night of boxing featuring Zab Judah vs. Vernon Paris. The broadcast begins at 10PM ET.

On March 24th, Jennings will take on his stiffest test to date when he meets former WBO heavyweight champion Sergei Liakhovich, 25-4, 16 KOs, at the Aviator Sports Complex in Brooklyn, New York. Although Jennings impressed in his last bout, a unanimous decision over Maurice Byarm, some believe that with the worldly Liakhovich, he’s bitten off a little more than he can chew. But Jennings doesn’t agree.

“I know for sure that I’m ready,” Jennings said before his typically rigorous workout at the ABC Recreation Center in North Philly. “Everything I do is for a reason. It’s a pretty good step up for me, and I know it’s not going to be easy. But I got to move forward. Everything is going to get tougher now. I know that’s the way it has to be.”

The fact that Liakhovich has been to the top of the heavyweight division and has faced a level of opposition far deeper and more accomplished than the 27-year old Jennings, figures to be the former champ’s biggest edge in the fight. However, supporters of Jennings can’t help but wonder if Liakhovich still has enough gas left in his tank to fight off the challenge of a hungry and confident prospect like the Philadelphian.

“They say he’s been there, but in the last four years he’s had four fights. And he’s lost two of them,” said Jennings’ trainer Fred Jenkins, Sr. “You’ve got an old race horse going against a young race horse. So who you betting on?”

Jennings knows what his opponent has done in the past, but realizes that now is time to make the most of his latest and biggest opportunity.

“He’s trying to work his way back to being a contender, and I’m here to step in his way,” said Jennings. “He’s also in my way, so that’s when we clash and collide.”

Jennings’ desire to win is palpable. Under the watchful eye of his trainer, Bryant sweats and grunts his way through a daily training regimen that emphasizes hard work and clear focus. This is one young man who does not look beyond the next step. He refuses to be seduced by the promise of his potentially bright future.

“What’s in front of me right now, this fight, is more important than my future,” Jennings said. “Tomorrow is not promised, so I’m working on what’s going on right now. My future lies within this fight.”

Huck returns to cruiserweight, defends WBO Title against Afolabi

Marco Huck (34-2, 25 KOs) will return to the cruiserweight division following last month´s exciting clash with WBA Heavyweight Champion Alexander Povetkin. After long talks with Hall of Fame Promoter Wilfried Sauerland, coach Ulli Wegner, Team Sauerland General Manager Chris Meyer and sports director Hagen Doering, Huck made the decision to continue at cruiserweight, where he holds the WBO title. His next opponent will be mandatory challenger and interim champion Ola Afolabi (19-2-3, 9 KOs). Next up for Povetkin is the mandatory defence against Hasim Rahman. The earliest date for a potential rematch between Huck and Povetkin would be fall 2012. “We believe that defending his WBO Cruiserweight Title is the best thing for Marco to do,” Wilfried Sauerland said. “At the age of 27 he is still very young for a boxer. He can always move up to heavyweight later.”

Huck accepted Sauerland´s advice. “I would have loved to remain at heavyweight but my team convinced me to stay at cruiserweight for the time being,” he said. “That´s fine for me. I am happy to continue my domination and keep destroying opponents. I will start with Afolabi. He is a dangerous fighter but he has no chance against me.”

First talks regarding the date and the venue have already been held between Team Sauerland and Tom Loeffler, Afolabi´s representative. It will be second time they meet in the ring. After winning the WBO Cruiserweight Title in August 2009, Huck made a spectacular first defence against Afolabi in December 2009. The 31-year-old has won five straight since, while Huck clinched seven more victories until his dramatic battle against Povetkin.

Pavlik to return March 31st against Jaco

Former Middleweight champion Kelly Pavlik will return on March 31st against Aaron Jaco in San Antonio accoriding to Dan Rafael of espn.com

“He’s going to fight and he’s just excited,” said Pavlik’s manager Cameron Dunkin.

“For Kelly to drive down by himself, it just shows you how much he’s into boxing again and wants to be around it,” Dunkin said. “He was laughing and joking. He looked so good. He said to me, ‘I’ve never trained like this consistently. I’ve been training six days a week. I get a good night’s sleep. I’m in bed by 9 o’clock. I’m on a health kick. I’m eating the right foods.’ Kelly said he was 173 pounds but after he works out he’ll be down at 169. His weight is good.

“He said, ‘I work two hours a day just on moving my head and reacting to punches.’ Robert has told he can’t get anyone to really spar with Kelly except for (2008 Olympian) Alfonso Blanco because he’s hurting everyone he spars with.”

“If everything goes OK, Kelly will fight again in June and then come back in the fall and, hopefully, have a real, real fight,” Dunkin said.

Tarver to fight Kayode May 26 on Showtime

Former Light Heavyweight champion Antonio Tarver will take on top cruiserweight contender Lateef Kayode on May 26th on Showtime according to Dan Rafael of espn.com

“The date is locked in and Lateef Kayode and me will be a good fight,” Tarver said. “People will see what I’m doing at 43 and realize that age is nothing but a number. Kayode is a fight I’d like to have. I will be in great, great shape, show my boxing ability, and I should be able to win that fight.”

“It’s very close to being done,” Kayode’s promoter Gary Shaw told ESPN.com. “Kayode will have to be at his best to beat Tarver. He is a big puncher, but has not looked sharp in his last few outings. Tarver is a very smart fighter with lots of tools in his arsenal. He could very well give Kayode a boxing lesson. But should (Tarver) decide to trade, it will be very interesting.

Tarver was critical of Kayode’s performance in a decision victory against Nick Ianuzzi in February 2011, a fight many thought Ianuzzi won.

“He took offense to my commentary in that fight with Ianuzzi. He said he thought I didn’t like him and that I wasn’t calling his fight right,” Tarver said. “I told him I called it like I saw it and said the things he could improve on. I said my job as an announcer is to call things as I see them and he took offense to what I said. I heard later that he called me out on some video on YouTube. Well be careful what you ask for and never disrespect your elders. He should have learned that by now.”

“As he (Kayode) has moved up the ladder with his competition, he has struggled, but we won’t take anyone lightly,” Tarver said. “I feel I would have to be the favorite in the fight.”

“He’s a power puncher and very aggressive, and I’m sure Freddie (Roach) will have him at his best and formulate a plan to beat me. My job is to make sure it doesn’t work,” Tarver said. “I’m excited to get back on center stage and show that I am still relevant.”

“We rushed into that heavyweight situation,” Tarver said. “If I ever do it again, I’ll do it the right way. I love cruiserweight. I feel like I can knock out every cruiserweight because I’m too big and strong with my speed and power in this division. I feel like I could break down any cruiserweight in the world. I was not in the best shape for Aguilera and it showed, but I was still able to outbox him.”

“My goal is to be heavyweight champion, but if I have to take two more fights at cruiserweight and then be ready for the heavyweight division by the end of the year, that is what I will do,” Tarver said. “And when I am back at heavyweight I will not be the heavyweight you saw against Aguilera. I will be a lean, mean punching machine. First cruiserweight. I’m in the twilight of my career and I need to stay busy. If I could squeeze in three fights this year, it would be a blessing.

“Most of the cruiserweights who have gone on been successful at heavyweight have impressive stays at cruiser. If you can’t beat the best cruiserweights in the world you’re kidding yourself about beating the best at heavyweight. I just need to get comfortable where I can be strong and make these cruiserweights feel my power, and then do the same with the heavyweights.”

Tickets Now Available For Middleweight Prospect Richard Pierson’s Upcoming April 18 Bout

Team Pierson has announced that tickets for middleweight prospect Richard Pierson are now available. Pierson will be stepping back into the ring April 18 at the Robert Treat Hotel in Newark, NJ, fresh off an impressive KO victory.

On February 17, Pierson (10-2, 7 KO) finished off Anibal Acevedo with a devastating right hand to the ribs at the end of the first round in his first fight back following an 18-month layoff.

“It felt good to be back in the ring, but feels even better to have a team,” said Pierson about his recent victory.

Throughout his career Pierson has dealt with his share of adversity and having fights fall through, yet he has stayed focus and determined to work towards a world title shot.

“The way I stay focused is that I keep my faith in God, and I stay around positive people,” said Pierson. “Boxing is life, and before you can get into that ring, you have to be mentally stable. You can’t get into the ring and have any doubt or concern for anything. So before I lace up the gloves, I make sure my household is safe and stable, and the people that surround me and care about me are happy. That is what really affects me and keeps me focused.”

Pierson has established himself as a top middleweight fighter with serious implications on making a title run by the end of 2012.

“I feel good about the upcoming fight; I’m hoping that nothing happens like it has in the past, where the fight falls through last minute,” said Pierson. “I’m working hard and training camp is going great, and I want to be able to get out there and work.”

Richard Pierson has waited patiently for his chance to shine. From day one all he has wanted to do is step between the ropes and have a fair shot, and although he has been thrown to the wolves countless times to simply be an opponent against “A” fighters, Pierson has rose above.

Pierson has caught the attention and respect of fellow fighters due to his unrelenting work ethic, determination and drive to excel in what he does.

Outside the ring Pierson is a dedicated student and full-time father, striving to give his children a better life. Quiet and humble, Pierson goes about life one day at a time, creating and seizing opportunities at will.

And for the first time in his career, Pierson has had a solid team around him to give him a full time training camp.

“It means a lot to have the resources around me and the people willing to put the time in,” said Pierson. “I am going to make the most of it, and it will show when I step between the ropes April 18.”

For tickets for Richard Pierson’s road to a middleweight title fight, call Bruce Vega at 973-885-4626 or Lou Esa at Final Round Boxing and Fitness at 973-885-7962 or visit the gym at 159 Algonquin Parkway in Whippany, NJ.

Tickets are $50 for general admission; $100 for ringside; $200 for VIP ringside (front row seat and coupon for concession stand). The doors open at 5:30 and the first fight begins at 7 p.m.

The Robert Treat Hotel is located at 50 Park Place, Newark, NJ.

Melson: “This is my Toughest Match Yet – Time To Earn It”

New York, NY (March 6, 2012) – Although he didn’t start boxing until he was a Plebe in his Freshman Year at West Point, Captain Boyd “Rainmaker” Melson’s had a number of big fights.

A 2008 Olympic alternate selection, Melson battled future pro standouts Erislandy Lara, Danny Jacobs, DeAndre Latimore, Charles Hatley and Keith Thurman during his amateur career. The New York, NY based junior middleweight also competed in many of the United States’ and World’s biggest tournaments however, he considers his next fight the most important to date.

On Wednesday evening at BB King Blues Club in Times Square, Melson, 8-0 (4 KO’s), will challenge fellow unbeaten New Yorker Delen “Sniper” Parsley in an eight round contest. At 6’3 with a huge wingspan, Parsley, a talented 24-year-old who’s been around the sport his entire life, has many physical advantages coming into the bout.

“Delen is one of the tallest and longest junior middleweights I’ve ever seen,” said Melson, an active Army Reserve officer and West Point grad. “His style will definitely present a challenge. My international experience as an amateur has allowed me the fortune of facing equally tall opponents in the past.”

To prepare for his first eight rounder, Melson made a few adjustments to his training regimen. The two most noticeable changes were in his decision to start camp a few weeks earlier and find a way to allow an already extremely overburdened daily schedule to create more space for more road work and additional strength training. Melson feels positive about how this preparation will pay off when the opening bell sounds.

“This is the kind of fight that can help either of us get to the next level. It’s an excellent challenge for both of us and I am confident that my preparation and my soul’s passion will both reveal themselves in the ring!”

The FCFF is bringing three outstanding Title Fights including the return of Josh Bartlett the 185-pound FCFF Champion and FCFF veteran Heavyweight fighter: Damion Martindale. The FCFF is still buzzing off the excitement of their January event, in which the FCFF celebrated 10 years in business with a blowout, sellout event. The FCFF is the premiere cage fighting organization in the Northwest; Inside MMA (television show) coined the FCFF the as the “Golden Gloves of MMA.” Fighters are making their way from four states to compete on March 10th at Rumble @ The Roseland 62. Do not miss it! Tickets are on sale at Tickets West (Safeway) and at the door of the Roseland Theater starting at 6pm with the fights beginning at 7pm.

The Main Event at Rumble @ The Roseland 62 is the Middleweight 185-pound Championship Fight. The current FCFF Champion and fan favorite John Bartlett of 503WCJJ returns after almost a one year break from FCFF competition. He last fought at Rumble at the Roseland 58 on July 16th, 2011. There he defeated the ultra tough Josh Hitsman via an impressive TKO due to strikes in the second round. On March 10th he may face his toughest competition to date: Bryson French. French was the “Fighter to Watch in 2012” from the FCFF’s Annual Hall of Fame and is taking on the Champ. French has a dominating physique, work ethic and skill set. French wants to upgrade the Middleweight Superfight belt he earned at Rumble @ the Roseland 60 on December 3rd 2011 by defeating top contender Nathan Allen via crowd stopping knockout in round number one, to the 185-pound Championship belt. “This main event brings a proven champ against the top young talent in the FCFF. It either cements John’s position as the undisputed Champ or ushers in a new era for Bryson. Our fans are excited to see this match up,” said Kevin Keeney FCFF owner and matchmaker.

The Heavyweight Superfight brings Darron O’Donnell (7-1) back to the cage from January’s epic anniversary event. O’Donnell suffered his first-EVER loss and wants to prove himself against FCFF veteran Damion Martindale. Martindale, a past two-time FCFF Heavyweight Champion is back and more ready than ever to take back his former dominate position in the FCFF. These two heavy-hitters will put on a great fight. The majority of O’Donnell’s seven victories have been via knockout in the Midtown, Rouge Warrior and Alive MMA’s fight productions. O’Donnell and Martindale’s focus is on the FCFF Belt. “I want to be the best pound-for-pound Heavyweight in Oregon,” says O’Donnell. Martindale has a laundry list of accomplishments in collegiate wrestling, MMA and a stellar personality to match. His most highlighted wrestling match comes from a tournament in 1997 where he beat Brock Lesner in a match. For more info contact the fighters directly: Darron O’Donnell darronistall@yahoo.com 541-450-0858.

The 145-pound interim Title Fight features rising star out of Scappoose, Oregon: Travis Sue. Just like Heavyweight Superfight contender Darron O’Donnell, Sue was part of the January Anniversary show last month. Sue had a “Fight of the Night” first round knockout victory against Chris Gillespie in only 48 seconds. This is very significant as Gillespie was also climbing the division ranks seeking the Title belt. Sue will bring an undefeated record of 4-0 to the cage on March 10th to face Damon Jordon of Reality Combat.

Campillo appeal denied by IBF

Gabriel Campillo’s request for an immediate rematch stemming from his controversial split decision defeat to IBF Light Heavyweight champion Tavoris Cloud on February 18th has been denied according to Dan Rafael of espn.com.

“The judging of professional boxing events is subjective,” IBF President Darryl Peoples wrote in an email to Campillo’s attorney Leon Margules. “While you have presented many media accounts disputing the scoring of the fight, these criticisms do not represent the opinions of professional boxing judges. Absent any proof of wrongdoing, we must rely on the decisions rendered by the judges whether their decisions are popular or not.

“Any action taken by the IBF in this situation without proof of wrongdoing or violation of IBF rules would serve to invalidate the decision of the judges. You pointed out in your letter dated February 27, 2011, ‘While we do not believe that a judges’ scoring should normally be questioned,’ the IBF agrees with your position. Based on the foregoing, the IBF will not grant an immediate rematch.”

“I just think if they have this discretionary rule then this is the type of thing they should use it for, where the fighter was wronged and there is no specific grounds under their appeal rules to allow us to appeal anything that happened that night,” Margules told ESPN.com. “This is when they should use the discretionary rule — to right the wrong. But they decided not to.”

Former Lightweight champ David Diaz Retires

Former WBC Lightweight champion David Diaz has announced his retirement according to Dan Rafael espn.com.

“I’m done with the sport. I love the sport, but I would be doing it an injustice if I kept fighting. My heart isn’t in it anymore,” Diaz, 35, told ESPN.com on Wednesday. “I could have taken fights just for the money, but it’s not about that. It’s about giving a good fight and having some dignity doing it.”

On that night, Aug. 4, 2007, Diaz outpointed all-time great Erik Morales of Mexico in a slugfest that sent Morales into a 2½-year retirement.

“That was one of the greatest moments of my life,” Diaz said. “It was always a dream of mine to fight at home for a title or in a title fight and it happened, and it happened against a legend in Erik Morales, who has done tremendous things for the sport and the Mexican people. To share the ring with him and have that fight at home was so meaningful to me.”

Although Pacquiao bloodied Diaz and stopped him in the ninth round of a lopsided fight to take his belt, Diaz said it was one of the two highlights of his career, along with the hometown defense against Morales.

“Fighting Manny Pacquiao was definitely one of them,” Diaz said. “After our fight he went on to do great things. His punching power was nothing that I hadn’t felt before, but the speed was something I could not control or adapt to.”

Including the Pacquiao fight, Diaz closed his career 2-3 but said retirement had been on his mind since he lost a decision to Humberto Soto for a vacant lightweight belt in March 2010 on the Pacquiao-Joshua Clottey undercard at Cowboys Stadium.

“It’s been on my mind since then. I thought maybe I had lost a step or two because I saw openings against Soto and I couldn’t take advantage of them,” Diaz said.

Diaz returned 10 months later for a majority decision win against Robert Frankel

Headlining on ESPN2’s “Friday Night Fights,” Diaz knocked down rising contender Hank Lundy but suffered a severe cut over his right eye and was eventually knocked out in the sixth round of a bloody fight in Hammond, Ind., just outside of Chicago.

“I felt good going into that fight but Lundy was young blood coming along and I thought if I didn’t take that fight, what I am doing, just padding my record? So I took the fight and Hank Lundy deserves credit,” Diaz said. “I had him, but he came back and that was it. He’s a good fighter with a bright future and wish him nothing but the best.”

“I didn’t want to think, ‘Am I fighting just for the money?’ Nah. I love the sport a lot but I wasn’t performing to my standards and giving great exciting fights,” he said. “I wasn’t doing that anymore. So I’m getting out while I still have my senses with me. I’m able to have a conversation with people. I’m hosting a radio show and having fun with that. So this is a good time to say goodbye. I love the sport, I love my fans and it was a great run. I’ve been blessed. I feel humbled by the people that helped me and supported me and always were there for me.

“Now it’s time to get a real job, because what I did (as a fighter) was fun — work out, travel and fight. It was beautiful.”

Bute to defend Super Middle crown against Froch in UK

Dan Rafael of espn.com is reporting that IBF Super Middleweight champion Lucian Bute will travel to Nottingham, England to defend his crown against former champion Carl Froch on May 26th.

“It’s my goal to fight the best boxers in the super middleweight division,” Bute said Thursday. “Carl Froch belongs in the elite of the super middleweight division and it will be a great fight. I am very confident and it will not faze me fighting in enemy territory.

“Supporters of Carl Froch will live their greatest disappointment. The IBF belt will fly roundtrip Montreal-Nottingham and back.”

“We are delighted to have agreed to terms for what I believe will be the biggest night for British boxing in many years,” said Eddie Hearn, Froch’s promoter. “I have to respect Lucian and his team for agreeing to enter the lion’s den and face Carl in his hometown of Nottingham, but am fully confident that Carl can become a world champion again on this epic night.”

“It’s a dream come true to get this opportunity to become a three-time world champion in my hometown of Nottingham,” Froch said. “The Super Six was an incredible journey for me but I missed fighting in the UK and it was important that Eddie and I made that happen, and for it to be for a world title is the icing on the cake. I’m ready to go to war all over again.

“Andre Ward wants Lucian to fight an A-level fighter. This should happen in May, and after he will have no more excuses to avoid Lucian,” said Jean Bedard of InterBox, Bute’s promoter.

“We really wanted to press forward with this fight. We’ve been insistent, made some concessions, but it was important to realize this is a fight that Lucian, our fans and our partners wanted,” Bedard said. “Also, I am convinced that Lucian will silence the critics. Lucian is showing great courage in agreeing to defend his title in enemy territory.”

“It is great news that Carl has landed this fight as it is one that we have wanted for a long time,” said Rob McCracken, Froch’s trainer. “I have always been confident that Carl will beat Lucian, and I will have him fully prepared and in the best possible shape on May 26.

“Lucian has already fought outside Canada in his professional career,” Larouche said. “This is a great challenge ahead for him on May 26 and Lucian will perform to his fullest as he always does. The style of these two incredible fighters will make for an explosive fight that I am sure boxing fans around the world won’t want to miss.”

ATLANTIC CITY, NJ (March 1, 2012)—This past Saturday night, Welterweight Ronald Cruz lived up to his top fifteen ranking and remained undefeated as he scored a ten round unanimous decision over Allen Conyers in a back and forth slugfest in Atlantic City.

That bout plus an exciting six bout undercard is now available on demand on www.gfl.tv for just $9.99 and can be purchased by clicking: http://www.gfl.tv/Events/Fight/Boxing/Peltz_Boxing_Promotions_Cruz_vs_Conyers/1335

Conyers looked good early as he used his length and stuck out the jab that seemed to confuse Cruz early. Cruz rocked and then sent Conyers down to the canvas at the end of the opening frame. Conyers was able to regain his composure and fight well in spots over the rest of the fight. Cruz , who is normally an orthodox fighter, fought most of the fight from the southpaw stance. Cruz would later state that it was something he saw in the first round that he was able to exploit Conyers.

The two had many back and forth exchanges with Cruz getting the better of most of those flurries. Cruz landed some solid combinations with Conyers trying to fire back which thrilled the capacity crowd at Ballys in Atlantic City.

Cruz got stronger down the stretch and came home with the most impressive victory to date,

Cruz, who was ranked number fifteen by the IBF raises his perfect ledger to 16-0.

In the co-feature, IBF number nine ranked Cruiserweight Garrett Wilson scored a third round stoppage over Pedro Martinez in a battle of Philadelphia based Cruiserweights.

Wilson hurt Martinez in the second and landed a shot that may have broken the nose of Martinez. Wilson came out and dropped Martinez in the third. With his Martinez nose leaking blood the fight was stopped. Wilson will now look forward to a rematch with Andres Taylor on April 14th.

In a battle of Camden, New Jersey Welterweights, Luis Cream remained undefeated by dropping Miguel Corcino on his way to a four round unanimous decision.

Rafael Montalvo scored what many are calling his second straight upset as he stopped DeCarlo Perez in round two of their scheduled six round Welterweight bout.

MMA Star Jeff Lentz made a successful pro debut with a vicious first round stoppage over David Navarro.

Antowyan Aikens made it two straight over Charles Kirby as he scored a four round unanimous decision in their super middleweight rematch.

Aikens won twice that evening as he proposed in the middle of the ring to his now fiancé.

In a second rematch, Korey Pritchett scored a four round unanimous decision over Korey Sloane in a Jr. Welterweight bout.

MMA/muay thai Events on GFL COMBAT SPORTS NETWORK

– Friday, March 2, 2012 7:30pm ET featuring Cage Wars 13 back to back shows from the Harrah’s Casino in Chester Pennsylvania. In the main event, Michael Pandolfini (3-1) battles Tom Backman (2-2) in a welterweight tilt. Pandolfini is on a 3-fight win streak and looks to make Backman number 4. A well-versed fighter, Pandolfini has wins by submission and KO and will look to put Backman in the pressure cooker early in the bout. Backman is coming off a tough decision loss where he went 5 rounds with a championship on the line. He looks to rebound quickly and show Pandolfini and the Cage Wars crowd that he is someone to be taken very seriously. This is a great matchup of two up and coming fighters with lots to prove to themselves and their contemporaries in the sport of mixed martial arts. In another featured bout, Patrick White (2-4) fights Casey Milliken (2-3) in a lightweight battle. White has a reputation for always being a scrapper and has fought for some of the biggest organizations based in the East Coast. White fights with a high risk/high reward style and you never know what he will bring to a fight. It’s the unknown that Milliken has to be ready for. Milliken is another fighter who is always game and his record shows it. He takes a fight anytime, anywhere. He has fought in New Jersey and traveled all the way out to Arizona looking for a good tussle. This bout has all of the makings for fight of the night as they two gladiators just don’t care. They will go at it and whatever happens happens.

– Saturday, March 3, 2012 7:00pm ET featuring Warriors Cup XIV- Muay Thai event from the Rahway Rec Center in Rahway, New Jersey. In the main event, Flavio Brito challenges Stephen Regman. Regman has a background in MMA and at (6-2) with wins via striking and submissions he is probably the better all-around fighter who has more tools at his disposal. But this bout will be strictly striking and Brito comes into the bout with some momentum as he has fared well in his last several bouts. Look for Brito and Regman to give the New Jersey crowd a first rate battle as they step into the ring and prepare to level each other with vicious strikes from head to toe. These are two of the toughest fighters in the Northeast so expect a war. In the co-main event, Rich Brattole fights Romain Gaston. Brattole and Gaston get this opportunity to fight second from the top because of their fast paced fighting style. Both fighters have been known to throw the kitchen sink at their opponents and this bout should resemble two bulls in a china shop as Brattole and Gaston cause damage in every fight. This could turn into a bout of attrition with whoever having the best cardio being victorious.

– Saturday, March 3, 2012 7:30pm ET featuring Cage Wars 14 from the Harrah’s Casino in Chester Pennsylvania. In the main event, Andrew Aguilar (4-1) fights Matthew Rizzo (3-0) for the Cage Wars Bantamweight Championship. Aguilar is the current reigning and defending champion and this will be his third title defense. Aguilar is known for his great cardio conditioning put will look to take out Rizzo before the final bell as Aguilar won his last bout by a razor thin split decision, something he does not want to duplicate against Rizzo. Rizzo has never tasted defeat and also holds another title with a different organization. This will be another opportunity for Rizzo to add to his collection of championship belts. This is a tough match to call as both fighters have fought and won championships, so neither man will break easily. In the co-main event, Ryan Cafaro (2-3) takes on James Currey (4-0) for the vacant Cage Wars Lightweight Title. Cafaro is coming off a tough decision loss in a title fight and looks to rectify his past mistakes with a win over Currey. If he is successful, Cafaro is walking away with the title. For the undefeated Currey, this is his first shot at gold and a veteran of ROC in New Jersey, Currey has already proven to be battle-tested. Expect fireworks from these two at the opening bell.

– Saturday, March 3, 2012 9:00pm ET featuring Journey Fight Series V from the Century Casino in Calgary, Canada. Two more professional bouts have been made official for Journey Fight Series V in Calgary, Canada. Nate Smandych will face Mexico’s Luis David Cruz Hernandez and Sean McKinnon will face California’s Daniel Kim. The night’s main event will feature Canada’s Jessica Gladstone against Mexico’s Celeste Saenz. Smandych is coming off a victory against Kiao Jie at the Canada vs. China event that took place this past November. The victory followed a great performance by Smandych in October at Journey Fight Series IV where he defeated Mark DeLuca via (T)KO. Hernandez fights out of Cancun, Mexico and will be looking to upset the home town favorite. McKinnon has recorded some solid wins since he dropped is pro debut including a win against Marcus Fisher and another win in Mexico. Kim will be looking to bounce back from his first pro loss at this past October’s Team Thailand vs. Team America event in Los Angeles, CA. Prior to his first pro loss, Kim had knocked out Carlos Ramirez in spectacular fashion at Stand Up Promotions “M1 Grand Muay Thai Championship” this past August.

– Saturday, March 3, 2012 9:00pm ET featuring – Saturday, March 3, 2012 9:00pm ET featuring School Of Hard Knocks 21 at the Spectra Place in Estevan, Canada.

– Sunday, March 4, 2012 5:00pm ET featuring International Fight Showdown – IFS 10 – Triple Threat at the Industry Hills Expo Center in Industry, California. The stacked event features a mixture of boxing, Muay Thai and MMA. The IFS Pro-1 Title will also be up for grabs as some of the top fighters go toe to toe for the coveted championship. Also at Triple Threat, a 8-man elimination tournament in the 170 lb and 205 lb weight classes. Under the revolutionary rules parameters set by IFS, fighters will compete against each other in three separate combat sports. Round one will be boxing, round two is Muay Thai and round 3 is MMA! In the main event, Jonathan Del Rosario battles Kevin Bee. The fight will consist of three rounds and start as a Western boxing match. Expect Del Rosario and Bee to be throwing haymakers as both are deadly strikers. If they both manage to escape the first round Del Rosario and Bee will be able to add six more points of attack (knees, elbows, shins) and engage in the hardest hitting striking art in the world. If both men can make it to the third and final round, then the ultimate combat sport will be showcased as the grappling arts (wrestling and submissions) will be on display from these two warriors. In the co-main event, Eduardo Hernandez fights Cooper Gibson in a highly anticipated and what is sure to be another hotly contest “triple threat” bout. Hernandez and Gibson are both crowd favorites as they always bring a break neck pace to their fights, whether in the striking arts or in MMA. Both fighters are proficient strikers, predominantly in the art of Muay Thai so the fans could see some wild exchanges and fireworks, particularly in round two. Don’t blink watching this bout as Hernandez and Gibson will be bringing the pain!

COOKING CAN BE RECIPE FOR A BETTER LIFE

The Columbian (Vancouver, WA) November 4, 1999 | ELIZABETH HOVDE, Columbian staff writer What an intimidating experience: learning to cook. Knowing the differences between various types of flours, how to thicken sauces and gravies without destroying the taste, even knowing how long to boil an egg all were mysteries.

The daughter of a highly talented and capable Dutch woman who grew up on farms eating whole foods plucked from the Earth, I eventually learned the basics. I knew how to shop for affordable ingredients and make meals for myself by the time I was a teen and out on my own. It is hard to imagine the lost feeling that grown adults, mothers and fathers, must experience when staring at a bag of brown rice or dried beans and not knowing how to make the goods into something edible.

In her Oct. 30 article, “Staples are tough sell at food banks,” Columbian reporter Anne Hart found that low-income community members who rely on local food banks for some of their meals are choosing hot dogs over fresh meat even salmon. They pick meals-in-a-box over staple foods, opting for quick-fix menu items that are not only less nutritional but most often more costly. Free staple foods sit on the food banks’ shelves going unused.

Why? Some folks no doubt make the choice out of convenience, just as people with plenty of money do. But Virginia Hirtler and other food-bank volunteers say many of their patrons simply lack cooking know-how. Without the skills to prepare meals that stretch a budget further, people in need carry these food bank preferences into grocery stores on already slim food budgets.

To combat the trend, Friends in Service of Humanity in Orchards gives away recipes with staple food items to try to convince patrons to take away the provisions that provide more meals for families. Hirtler, who volunteers for FISH, has even produced three cookbooks that outline recipes using common ingredients the food bank receives. In 1984 large amounts of cheese were available to patrons, so she compiled a cookbook of cheese-related meals. More than 3,000 copies of the cookbooks have gone to those in need. website how long to boil an egg

Hirtler is setting out to update the latest cookbook, adding many staple-heavy recipes and tips for using basics. Hirtler is also looking for someone to donate printing services for the books, so the food bank can get them into the hands of those who turn away staples or ditch them after being talked into taking them home because they don’t know what to do with them.

To help those in need learn to cook and make economically smart grocery-shopping choices, the North County Community Food Bank in Battle Ground hopes to offer cooking classes starting this February. The organization has done cooking classes in the past, but making it a regular offering is difficult: The bank needs a certified kitchen to teach in for free (a place where public food can be served), volunteer instructors to lead classes and funds to buy staples and coordinate the class schedule.

Kay Schauer, a home economist with the Washington State University Clark County Cooperative Extension’s family food and nutrition program, will also teach classes for people on low incomes if kitchens are available at no cost. If you have a certified kitchen and can donate some space to these efforts, call Schauer at 254-8436 or the North County Community Food Bank at 687- 7126 and ask for Elaine Hertz. To help in the cookbook effort, call Hirtler at FISH, 256-2440.

Charity that works “Give me a fish and I’ll eat for a day; teach me to fish and I’ll eat for a lifetime,” the old adage goes. And yet often we don’t realize what others don’t know and that so many of us have rich knowledge to give. howlongtoboilaneggnow.com how long to boil an egg

It is far easier to donate food baskets, or vote to increase government programs that, although well-intended, often fail: too big, too impersonal. Unfortunately, our nation’s collective goodwill has replaced charity that does work: one-on-one relationships, discipleship and teaching. This type of charity takes real time and effort but can transform lives.

Is there someone in your sphere of influence who could benefit from what you know? A young teen who could learn the skills she may need later in life? A single mother who doesn’t know how to make mashed potatoes, so she opts for prepackaged noodles? Do you know a family that has trouble making ends meet and lives without a budget to help guide them?

Fewer people will live in poverty if more one-on-one relationships are pursued and if the transfer of basic life skills from family to family can give people in need the tools required to build steps to self-sufficiency.

ELIZABETH HOVDE, Columbian staff writer
