SHEIKA – FERRANTE FIGHT OF YEAR CANDIDATE NOW AVAILABLE ON GFL

CHESTER, PA (March 1, 2012)—This past Friday night at Harrahs in Chester, PA, Omar Sheika scored a ten round unanimous decision over Tony Ferrante in a bout that many are already hailing as a Fight of the Year candidate.

That bout plus a full five bout undercard is now available on www.gfl.tv for just $9.99 by clicking: http://www.gfl.tv/Events/Fight/Boxing/Joey_Eye_Presents_Fight_Night_Ferrante_vs_Sheika/1395

Sheika and Ferrante took turns landing hard shots which thrilled the crowd at Harrahs. Ferrante jabbed very well early and was able to land some hard uppercuts. Sheika got through with right hands. The bout was a battle of geography as Ferrante had much success by keeping Sheika pinned up against the ropes while Sheika performed well in the middle of the ring.

Sheika too control in the middle round by landing some furious combinations. With both fighters faces showing the signs of a war, Sheika landed a crunching blow in round nine that snapped the head of Ferrante back. Somehow Ferrante was able to recover and get some work done at the end of the round. Ferrante came back to have a strong round ten but it was not enough to offset an earlier damage done inflicted by Sheika which included an earlier knockdown.

In the exciting co-feature, Naim Nelson remained undefeated with a close six round majority decision over Linwood Hurd.

This was a bout in which each fighter had solid moments but it was the more solid punching of Nelson that seemed better in the judges’ minds over the volume of Hurd.

Local favorite Jamie Campbell scored a four round unanimous decision over Lonnie Kornegay in a battle of hard hitting Heavyweights.

Fred Jenkins Jr. survived a spirited effort over late-replacement John Michael Terry to eek out a four round unanimous decision in a Light Heavyweight bout.

Tyrone Crawley Jr. made a successful pro debut with a four round unanimous decision over Hamid Robinson.

In a battle of pro debuters, Danny Mills scored the only knockout of the evening when he took out Michael Haines in a Middleweight bout.

This terrific night of boxing was promoted by Joey Eye Boxing & David Feldman.

GARRETT WILSON, ANDRES TAYLOR BOX FOR NABF CRUISERWEIGHT BELT APRIL 14 AT BALLY’S ATLANTIC CITY

Atlantic City, NJ—Garrett Wilson, of Philadelphia, PA, and Andres Taylor, of Johnstown, PA, meet for the second time in less than 19 months as they battle for the vacant North American Boxing Federation (NABF) cruiserweight title on Saturday evening, April 14, at Bally’s Atlantic City.

The Wilson-Taylor championship contest tops a seven-bout card which begins at 7.30 pm. in the 1,500-seat Grand Ballroom.

Wilson (right) and Taylor met the first time on Sept. 11, 2010, in Johnstown, PA, in a scheduled eight-round fight which Wilson accepted on three days’ notice. The outdoor match was interrupted by rain after the fifth round and later resumed with one official voting for Wilson, one for Taylor, one for a draw.

Since then, Wilson, 29, has beaten Aaron Williams, of Las Vegas, NV; Omar Sheika, of Paterson, NJ; Chuck Mussachio, of Wildwood, NJ, and Pedro Martinez, of Philadelphia, PA. He captured the United States Boxing Association (USBA) cruiserweight title by beating Sheika and defended it against Mussachio.

Wilson is 12-5-1, 6 K0s. He is rated No. 9 in the world by the International Boxing Federation (IBF), No. 23 by the World Boxing Council (WBC). He tuned up for this fight on Feb. 25 by stopping Martinez in three rounds at Bally’s.
Taylor, 33, also has not lost since fighting Wilson, earning decisions over Rayshawn Myers, of Cleveland, OH; Kamarah Pasley, of Philadelphia, PA; Mike Alderete, of Albuquerque, NM, and Gary Gomez, of Salt Lake City, UT.

A pro less than four years, Taylor is 20-1-2, 7 K0s. and rated No. 33 by the WBC. His last fight was Nov. 23, 2010, in Pittsburgh, PA, when he out-pointed Gomez over eight rounds.

Taylor (above) suffered his only pro loss in 2009 when Leo Bercier, of Great Falls, MT, out-pointed him in Campbell, OH. Taylor avenged the loss three months later, also on points, in Johnstown, PA.

There are no common foes.

Taylor has gone eight rounds on three different occasions. Wilson has gone 12 rounds twice.

ABOUT APRIL 14

The Wilson-Taylor fight tops a seven-bout card at Bally’s Atlantic City. First fight is 7.30 pm. Mitchell – Witherspoon is on for Hopkins – Dawson undercard

Dan Rafael of espn.com is reporting that Heavyweight’s Seth Mitchell and Chazz Witherspoon will open up the HBO telecast on April 28th before Bernard Hopkins rematches Chad Dawson in Atlantic City.

“It’s a good solid fight and a good step up for Seth,” Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer told ESPN.com after finalizing the bout with HBO on Monday. “It’s a fight that makes sense for Seth and for Chazz Witherspoon.

“We’ve agreed to the fight and I just got the contract today, so I’ll go over it and, assuming everything is in order, we have a fight,” said Xavier James, Witherspoon’s attorney and former HBO Sports executive. “Chazz knows he has to win in order to take that next step in his career.”

“It is a fight that just makes sense,” Schaefer said. “It’s the perfect addition to this card because both of them can have their fans at the fight.”

“We finally got it made. (Witherspoon) came to terms and it’s one of the fights we’ve been going after,” said Mitchell’s manager Sharif Salim said. “Chazz is from Philly, Seth is from the D.C. area. I know we have busloads of people looking forward to going up for the fight. We thought this was the most exciting fight we could make right now for where Seth is in his career.”

“I’m very excited about the fight. We’ve been trying to get this fight for a while,” said Mitchell, adding that he has been in the gym but will get down to serious training this week. “I’m excited that Chazz took the opportunity. It’s gonna be a good fight. We’re comparable in our experience, height, weight. He has a recognizable name. I’m really looking forward to the challenge. He has a good jab and good tools, but I believe I will be victorious.”

“Chazz Witherspoon can move, he has tremendous boxing pedigree, the guy can fight and he has a very good record,” Salim said. “We knew HBO would approve him and, hey, I also like the human interest side of this fight. These are two guys who are smart guys, both college graduates.”

“That’s the plan but everything is contingent on me taking care of business,” Mitchell said. “I’m looking forward to fighting at least three times this year, hopefully four, but April 28 is the first business I have to take care of.”

Said Salim: “Seth has tremendous work ethic and is really coming along. He just needs the rounds and the experience. But I really believe that it won’t be too long until he is ready for one of those big fights. We have to focus on Witherspoon first. Witherspoon is a good fighter. You won’t hear us saying anything bad about Chazz Witherspoon.”

Hulett takes out Bentley to win Cagesport Title!

Tacoma, WA (Monday, February 27, 2012) – David “Hollywood” Hulett lived up to his billing by taking out local favorite Len Bentley in the first round of their Cagesport Welterweight title match last Saturday evening at the Emerald Queen Casino in Tacoma.

Headlining Halquist Productions’ “Cagesport XVIII”, The Las Vegas based submission specialist impressed the standing-room-only crowd by Bentley to the ground within the first minute of the bout. Bentley, a former Ultimate Fighter participant and who also fought in M-1 and Strikeforce, tried to get back to his feet but was unsuccessful. Hulett, fighting once again in his opponent’s backyard, executed a grueling achilles lock, which forced his foe to submit 1:28 into the contest.

Hulett improves to 19-10 with 11 of this wins coming by submission. Bentley, a local favorite who stepped for Eddy Ellis on less than one week’s notice, falls to 10-6.

In the highly anticipated co-feature, Cagesport veteran Ryan Mulvihill scored the biggest win of his career after using a triangle choke to submit fellow Cagesport regular Chanti “The Brooklyn Knight” Johnson at 2:50 in second round of their three round featherweight bout.

Rising local stars Jeff Hatton and Julian Erosa both remained undefeated, submitting Corey Roska and Jerome Jones respectively.

“I am very pleased with this card, especially considering that the main event fell apart less than a week before the show,” said Brian Halquist, CEO of Halquist Productions. “We had a sold out crowd and a ton of talented fighters giving it their all. I can’t wait for the next card!”

Cagesport returns to the Emerald Queen on Saturday, April 28 and more information will be available on HalquistProductions.com.

Alexander decisions Maidana

Former Jr. Welterweight champion Devon Alexander made a pretty loud statement in his Welterweight debut with an impressive ten round unanimous decision over Marcos Maidana in a fight between two former Jr. Welterweight champions at the Scottrade Center in St. Louis.

Alexander was brilliant as he mixed up his punches with right hooks to the body and straight lefts to the head. Alexander never let Maidana get into any type of groove as his speed and assortment of punches kept Maidana off balance. Alexander had Maidana in trouble on a few occasions and Alexander looks solid both skill wise and physically at this weight.

Alexander won by scores of 100-90; 100-90 and 99-91 and is now 23-1. Maidana, 146 3/4 lbs of Santa Fe, Argentina and is now 31-3.

Adrien Broner defended his WBO Super Featherweight title with a one punch fourth round stoppage over previously undefeated Eloy Perez.

Broner showed the skills and speed that have made him one of the most talented fighters in the world as he landed some solid shots over the first three frames. Perez fought hard and got in a few hooks but he was out skilled by the man known as “The Problem”

Broner landed a perfect right hand that sent Perez down face first in the fourth round. Perez tried to get to his feet but was unable and the fight was stopped.

Broner, 130 lbs of Cincinnati, OH is now 23-0 with nineteen knockouts. Perez, 130 lbs of Salinas, CA is now 23-1-2.

CRUZ & CONYERS READY FOR WAR TONIGHT ON GFL

NEW YORK (February 25, 2012)—TONIGHT!!! Two fighters will look to take the next step in pursuit of championship glory when undefeated Welterweight Ronald Cruz takes on Allen Conyers in a ten round bout as well as USBA Cruiserweight champion Garrett Wilson battling Pedro Martinez in a Philadelphia showdown

The show, which will originate from Ballys in Atlantic City and is promoted by Peltz Boxing, will be streamed LIVE all over the world on www.gfl.tv at 7:30 pm.

The show can be accessed for just $9.99 by clicking: http://www.gfl.tv/Events/Fight/Boxing/Peltz_Boxing_Promotions_Cruz_vs_Conyers/1335

Cruz, twenty-five years old has a record of 15-0 with twelve knockouts is one of the fastest rising prospects in the world and for that the IBF recently installed him and the number fifteen ranked contender in the world.

The native of Bethlehem, PA has developed into one of the heavy handed punchers and features a devastating body attack that has sent his last eight opponents home before the final the bell.

The most impressive thing about that streak is that he has stepped up the competition greatly during the run. Some of the victims include former National Amateur champion Jeremy Bryan (14-1); the first man to stop the rugged Manuel Guzman; Tough as nails Doel Carrasquillo; Dillett Frederick and his last bout, Cruz scored an incredible fifth round stoppage over the battle tested Anges Adjaho (25-6)

This will be Cruz thirteenth appearance on gfl.tv

“Its been an honor to watch Ronald basically grow up on gfl”, said gfl.tv blow by blow announcer Marc Abrams

“This kid has grown on everybody who has watched him since day one and at just twenty-five with the way Ronald punches, especially to the body; he will be a serious factor for anybody he fights as he moves up the ranks”

Conyers of Bronx, New York maybe the kind of guy who try to match Cruz punch for punch.

Conyers has a record of 12-5 with nine knockouts but he has the thunder in his hands that has him living up to his “Dream Shatterer” moniker.

Conyers won his first eight bouts before dropping fights to the likes of Delvin Rodriguez, James Kirkland, Said Ouali & Carlos Molina.

Sandwiched in between were very impressive stoppages over Jonathan Tubbs (7-1-1—KO 1); Russell Jordan (12-3—KO 1); Then undefeated and now world ranked Derek Ennis (10-0-1—KO 2) as well as impressive decision over James De La Rosa (20-0)

“This has the makings of a war at the highest level. You have Cruz who is perfect but that doesn’t mean anything to Conyers, just ask Ennis and De La Rosa plus the only guys who beat Conyers are legitimate contenders so if Cruz can win here he has to be taken seriously on the world stage”, finished Abrams

In the co-feature, Wilson, who may the hottest fighter in the Cruiserweight division takes on his cross town rival in Martinez in a battle of come forward power punchers.

Wilson sports a record of 11-5-1 with five knockouts and is 4-0-1 with three knockouts an impressive five fight run.

In that recent streak, Wilson has a draw with Andres Taylor (16-1-1); and wins over Aaron (20-2); Former four-time world title challenger Omar Sheika and his last bout when Wilson scored an improbable come from behind stoppage over Chuck Mussachio (17-1-2) in a Fight of the Year Candidiate.

Wilson, who is ranked number nine by the IBF, knows that a win here moves him one step closer to fighting for the World Cruiserweight championship.

Standing in his way is Martinez, who has a record of 6-4 with three knockouts but knows that this is an opportunity that could put him on the same that Wilson jumped into five fights ago.

Like Wilson, Martinez is a guy with ability that exceeds his modest record and he has power in both hands that one shot could mess up a lot of plans that Wilson has.

Martinez is coming off a four round unanimous decision over Elvin Sanchez (4-1) on August 13th in Atlantic City.

Five more round out this exciting card.

In a six round Welterweight bout, DeCarlo Perez (6-1-1, 2 KO’s) takes on Rafael Montalvo (1-1, 1 KO)

In a four round Middleweight bout, Antowyan Aikens (3-0, 1 KO) of Atlantic City rematches Charles Kirby (1-5)

In anticipated bout of Welterweights from Camden, NJ, Luis Cream (2-0) takes on Miguel Corcino (3-1, 2 KO’s)

David Navarro (1-4) takes on debuting Jeff Lentz in a four round Welterweight bout.

In a rematch of Jr. Welterweights, Korey Pritchett (1-1) will look to even up the score with Korey Sloane (2-2)

Burgos survives knockdown and decisions Cruz

Juan Carlos Burgos survived a ninth round knockdown and held on to defeat Cristobal Cruz via ten round unanimous decision in a Super Featherweight bout at Dover Downs in Dover, Delaware.

Burgos controlled the first half of the fight as he got in some short shots inside the lunging long punching of Cruz. In round six a short left hook by Burgos connected and sent Cruz to the canvas. Shortly after that a cut formed around the right eye of Cruz. That inspired Cruz to come on late in the fight and then he deposited Burgos on the canvas in the ninth. Cruz had a soliid tenth as well but it was too little too late as Burgos previous work distanced himself enough to hold to the 96-92; 96-92 and 98-90 victory.

With the win, Burgos, 129 lbs of Tijuana, MX is now 29-1. Cruz, 128 3/4 lbs of Tijuana, MX is now 39-13-3

Manny Perez scored the biggest win of his career by scoring a ten round unanimous decision over Edgar Santana in a Jr. Welterweight bout.

Perez dictated the pace and never let Santana get in a rhythem. Perez controlled the middle rounds with solid combination punching and it seemed like Santana could never get set and land many solid blows. Santana began to swell around his right eye in the ninth round. The final frame saw some good action as Santana landed a couple big right hands but Perez walked through them and fought back hard and worked the body.

Perez, 138 1/2 lbs of Denver won by scores of 96-94 on all cards and is now 17-7-1. Santana, 139 1/2 lbs of New York is now 26-4.

Adamek to Fight Aguilera in March 24th NBC Sports Network Fight Night Comeback

Former World Light Heavyweight and Cruiserweight Champion Tomasz Adamek will face “Dominican Dynamite” Nagy Aguilera of Newburgh, New York on Saturday, March 24th at the Aviator Sports Complex in Brooklyn on the undercard to Zab Judah’s Homecoming bout against Detroit’s Undefeated Vernon Paris.

Known as “Goral” or “The Highlander” in his native Poland, Adamek (44-2, 28 KO’s) has been out of action since September when he and Heavyweight Champion Vitali Klitschko drew over 42,000 to witness their fight in a soccer stadium in Wroclaw. In Aguilera (17-6, 12 KO’s) the always explosive Adamek will face a big puncher who has scored all 12 of his knock out wins within the first four rounds.

WBC AND RING MAGAZINE LIGHT HEAVYWEIGHT WORLD CHAMPION BERNARD “THE EXECUTIONER” HOPKINS AND FORMER WORLD CHAMPION “BAD” CHAD DAWSON TO MEET SATURDAY, APRIL 28 AT BOARDWALK HALL IN ATLANTIC CITY TO DETERMINE WHO IS CHAMPION “ONCE AND FOR ALL

New York City, February 22 – The oldest fighter in boxing history to win a world title, Bernard “The Executioner” Hopkins, and former World Champion “Bad” Chad Dawson will meet again to settle their heated feud following their October 2011 bout, which was originally scored as a TKO win for Dawson, but later ruled a no decision by the California State Athletic Commission. The two are ready to resume their high-stakes rivalryon Saturday, April 28 at Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, New Jersey. The 12 round bout for Hopkins’ WBC and Ring Magazine light heavyweight world championships will be televised live on HBO World Championship Boxing beginning at 10:15 p.m. ET/7:15 p.m. PT.

“Chad Dawson can say whatever he wants, but I am not going to trash talk this one,” said Hopkins. “Everyone knows what I am capable of in the ring. They have seen it over 50 times before in the last 20 plus years. I will say that I am really happy that this is on HBO so that all of my fans from across the country can see me continue this unprecedented path. I absolutely want to prove that I can beat Chad Dawson, another guy that is almost two decades younger than me and I am confident I will on April 28.”

“The first fight did not go as planned, but I’m confident I was going to win that night,” said Dawson. “Hopkins is going to have to face his fears. Bernard tried to run away from me, but here we are again. I’m thrilled about the whole situation. I’m very excited to fight on the East Coast because a lot of my fans will be there to see me live. I know I’ll be ready come fight night.”

“Whenever Bernard Hopkins fights, I get the chills because he is a living legend,” said Richard Schaefer, CEO of Golden Boy Promotions. “Bernard has an amazing history, having fought and defeated so many world champions. I truly believe that he and Dawson facing off in Atlantic City on HBO World Championship Boxing is a recipe for an unforgettable night.”

“The score must be settled once and for all,” said Gary Shaw, CEO of Gary Shaw Productions. “Chad Dawson has something to prove. We all know Bernard Hopkins is a future Hall of Famer, but Chad is not going to let him get away with any of his antics or funny stuff. Chad wanted this bout and now that he has it, he’s going to do whatever it takes to be a champion once again.”

“Bernard Hopkins and Chad Dawson have unfinished business and we look forward to televising this intriguing light heavyweight showdown,” said Kery Davis, senior vice president, programming, HBO Sports. “Bernard’s credentials as a future Hall of Famer are firmly established and he captured the world’s attention last year when he won a world title at the age of 46. Chad is an extremely talented fighter in his prime. This sets up to be a hard-fought encounter that boxing fans will be excited to see.”

“Bernard Hopkins is a world champion athlete who grew up and trained in the greater Philadelphia area, just a short ride from Atlantic City, so this fight is going to be a great draw for Atlantic City,” said Don Marrandino, Eastern Division President for Caesars Entertainment. “Some of the greatest boxing matches and sporting events have been hosted in Atlantic City and on April 28, Historic Boardwalk Hall will be the backdrop to what could be Hopkins’ most historic fights and likely one of the final bouts of his career – he’s one of the most exciting boxers to watch and one of the greatest athletes of the past 50 years.”

“Hopkins vs. Dawson: Once And For All,” a 12 round bout for Hopkins’ WBC and Ring Magazine light heavyweight world championships, is presented by Golden Boy Promotions and Gary Shaw Productions and sponsored by Caesars Atlantic City. The bout will take place from Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, New Jersey and be televised live on HBO World Championship Boxing® beginning at 10:15 p.m. ET/7:15 p.m. PT.

Tickets, priced at $300, $200, $100, $50 and $25, go on sale on Thursday, February 23 at 12:00 p.m. ET. Tickets will be available for purchase at the Boardwalk Hall box office, by calling Ticketmaster at (800) 736-1420 or online at ticketmaster.com.

The oldest man in boxing history to win a major world title, 47-year old Bernard Hopkins (52-5-2, 32 KO’s) still fights with the skill and tenacity of fighters 20 years his junior. A proud native of Philadelphia, Hopkins has not only secured a future spot in the Hall of Fame, he has solidified his place amongst athletes who have achieved greatness well into their forties. Between his 10-year title reign at middleweight and his incredible victories over Antonio Tarver, Winky Wright, Kelly Pavlik and Roy Jones Jr., all after the age of 41, Hopkins is truly a living legend. In May 2011, he reached the top of the boxing mountain once again with his stirring victory over Jean Pascal, breaking the age record previously held by George Foreman. Today, Hopkins is a few months away from breaking another record and becoming the oldest reigning champion ever as he continues to follow the path of Archie Moore, who made his last title defense at 47 years and seven months old. Should Hopkins be victorious on April 28, he will become one step closer to reaching that goal as he faces Dawson with the intention of adding another amazing achievement to his resume.

Former WBC and IBF Light Heavyweight World Champion “Bad” Chad Dawson (30-1, 17 KO’s) has long been considered one of the sport’s best pound for pound by boxing insiders and his victories over respected world champions such as Glen Johnson (twice), Antonio Tarver (twice), and Tomasz Adamek have proven that he has the talent and athleticism to stay atop his division. In 2011, the 29-year old from New Haven, Conn. bounced back from his lone loss to Pascal in 2010 with an impressive win over Adrian Diaconu, but it’s Hopkins that he really wants to add to his list of vanquished foes, and now he has his chance. Dawson is ready to end Hopkins’ victory lap as the oldest world champion and start a new chapter of his career as a newly re-crowned champion.

The historic Boardwalk Hall, which first opened in 1929, underwent a three year, $90 million renovation to transform the building into a modern special events arena capable of variable seating for up to 14,500 people. Upon it’s reopening in 2001, it has been recognized as the destination’s premier entertainment venue, known for high profile concerts, family shows, and sporting events.
