Eddie Chambers Takes on Sergei Liakhovich on 1/21/12 NBC Sports Network Fight Night Inaugural Show

When he opens the new NBC Sports Network’s Fight Night series on January 21, 2012 at Asylum Arena in his hometown of Philadelphia, top Heavyweight Contender “Fast” Eddie Chambers has promised to impress Philly’s discerning boxing fans and make lots of new ones. According to Chambers, taking on former World Heavyweight Champion Siarhei “White Wolf” Liakhovich in a high profile, nationally televised fight is a great way to showcase the sport and bring new fans for the Sweet Science.

“I want people outside of boxing and new fans coming in to know just how hard I work, and how much work all fighters put in,” Chambers said. “I believe that the Heavyweight Championship is the most coveted title in sports. Everyone loves a Gladiator and that is what boxing is about. NBC Sports Network stepping up to the table will hopefully get fans to take a look at the sport once again and jump on the band wagon. This is exactly what we need. I know when the fans tune in January 21st they will not be disappointed.”

Chambers continued, “I am training extremely hard and it is great having the opportunity to be fighting back in front of your fans, your people, and knowing that most of the people that are there in the crowd are for you.” He went on to say that he loves fighting in places like Germany, but there is no place like home.

Boxing has been in Eddie Chamber’s blood since he was a child growing up in Pittsburgh. His father, Eddie Chambers Sr. was a boxer back in the 1970s. Eddie Sr. taught his son how to hold his hands properly to throw a punch at the tender age of 9. Starting around the age of 12, Eddie Sr. would sit with Eddie and watch films of all the great fighters such as “Sugar” Ray Robinson, Joe Louis, and of course Muhammad Ali. After two years of arguing with his father to allow him to box, Eddie Jr. finally got the chance at the age of 14 when he enrolled in a local Pittsburgh Golden Gloves Tournament.

Eddie turned professional at the age of 18 on December 29, 2000. He defeated Tyrone Austin by second round knockout in West Virginia. His next professional fight occurred just two months later in his now adopted hometown of Philadelphia, PA one of the best boxing cities in the world and the ultimate proving ground for young, up-and-coming fighters.

When I was 18 and 19, I was fighting at the Blue Horizon,” Chambers said. Those were some of the toughest fights I have ever had and there was so much pressure to do well. The crowd always gives you their best and there is so much history. Philadelphia has the best fans, but they will definitely let you know how they feel. There are so many great venues around the city and such great history. I want to make my own history and be among the greatest.”

On March 20, 2010, Chambers took on Wladimir Klitschko in Dusseldorf, Germany for the WBO, IBF, and IBO Heavyweight Championship of the World. Chambers gave a valiant effort and performance in the ring before losing via knockout in the waning seconds of the fight. At 6’1, 210 lbs, Chambers gave up five inches and nearly 35 pounds to Klitschko. Chambers posed a challenge to Klitschko with speed and toughness that nearly carried Chambers the distance of the fight. Chambers was the first person in two years to make it to the twelfth round against the tough Ukrainian.

Chambers did not fight again until February 11, 2011, when he took on a former opponent who he knocked out a few years earlier in Derric Rossy. In an IBF Title Eliminator, Chambers defeated Rossy once again, this time by unanimous decision.

Looking toward his upcoming challenge, Chambers describes Liakhovich as a good fighter who fought a great match when he won the title by beating Lamon Brewster in 2006. “Liakhovich is a very competitive and very live opponent. I think our style match up will make for a very exciting fight. Right now Liakhovich is in my way. I always respect my opponent, but I have to knock him out of the way. I plan on doing that and taking care of business on January 21st in impressive fashion.”

Promoted by Main Events, Peltz Boxing Promotions and Goossen Tutor, the non-televised undercard fights will begin at 7 p.m. Tickets are priced at $45 and $65 can be purchased by calling Peltz Boxing, (215) 765-0922.

Morales – Garcia rescheduled for March 24th in Houston

Dan Rafael od espn.com is reporting that the postponed bout between WBC Super Lightweight champion Erik Morales and undefeated Danny Garcia has been rescheduled for March 24th with the bout remaining in Houston.

The bout was postponed earlier this week from the original January 28th date after Morales had to have emergency Gallbladder surgery last week in Mexico.

“We were able to get a date from Reliant Arena. The idea was to keep the card in Houston,” Said Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer. “The Houston fight fans enthusiastically embraced the card and we already had a tremendous amount of tickets sales. We were able to work out something with the arena because they had another event there on that date, but they were able to clear the date. They worked that out on their side and they were very excited about keeping the event there. I coordinated the date with HBO. The fighters have been informed and they’re excited about it.

“Morales is going to be in perfect shape. He could have fought in the second half of February but there were no dates,” Schaefer said. “Now that it’s going to be on March 24, Erik very much likes the time to prepare as well. It worked out. I’m happy that over the holiday, when most people were gone, we were still able to put the show back together and keep it in the same place because when you have an event which the local boxing community really embraced you want to keep it there.”

Morales – Garcia ; Kirkland – Molina postponed

Dan Rafael of espn.com reports that the entire January 28th HBO televised doubleheader that would have saw WBC Super Lightweight champion Erik Morales defend against undefeated Danny Garcia and James Kirkland – Carlos Molina Super Welterweight clash from Houston has been postponed to a later date.

“I talked to HBO and we are looking at different dates in February and March, so the card as a whole will just be postponed,” Said Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer told ESPN.com. “It’s still going to be Morales-Garcia and Kirkland against Molina. The only thing changing is the date and maybe the venue depending on the availability. We’ll check in Houston first. We want to just make sure that Erik Morales is going to have enough time to be fully healed from his surgery. So my feeling is that March is more likely when we’ll reschedule the fight.

“We are looking at different venue availability and we hope to have something to announce on that soon. But we’ll still do this card. HBO wants to do it, just on a different date than Jan. 28. Everybody is on board.”

Baltimore, MD (December 27, 2011) – Jake “The Snake” Smith of Baltimore Boxing Promotions and Scott Wagner’s Ballroom Boxing announced that the area’s top amateur fighters will battle the Naval Academy’s best boxers Thursday, January 26 at Michael’s Eighth Avenue in Glen Burnie, MD.

“I’m excited for this event because it involves members of the community and is going to help out the family of a fighter who fought many times at Michael’s Eighth,” said Smith, who owns the Baltimore Boxing Club where many of the local fighters currently train. “The Navy’s coach Jim McNally is a personal friend of mine and somebody I have the world of respect for.”

Morales withdraws from title defense with Garcia due to surgery

Dan Rafael of espn.com is reporting that WBC Super Lightweight champion Erik Morales will be unable to defend his title against undefeated Danny Garcia due to Morales Gallbladder surgery last week.

“He’s not going to fight. He called me and told me the doctor said he feels he needs a little more time to heal internally,” said Golden Boy Promotions matchmaker Eric Gomez. “He said the doctor said everything looks fine on the outside but he needed more time. Could he fight? Erik said he could fight, but the doctor said he doesn’t want him to fight.”

“He said, if necessary, he would go against his doctor’s orders but we wouldn’t let him do that, and he probably wouldn’t pass his medicals anyway if they knew he just had surgery,” Gomez said.

Junior middleweight contenders James Kirkland (30-1, 27 KOs) and Carlos Molina (19-4-2, 6 KOs) are due to meet in the televised co-feature.

“I don’t think HBO wants to do a replacement fight or go with a stand-alone (televised) fight,” Gomez said. “In an area like Houston, with a lot of Latinos, a lot of Mexicans, you need Erik Morales on that card, so it’s a big blow to us. I don’t know what’s going to happen.”

“The doctor would like him to rest for about a month, so Erik wanted to know if we could just postpone it for a month,” Gomez said. “It all depends on HBO and what their schedule is like and what they want to do. Erik just wants to put it off for a month, but I told him it’s not that easy. It doesn’t work that way with HBO with their schedule.”

“He said his weight is down and he is feeling good now that the surgery is over,” Gomez said. “It just came about and he had to take care of it with the procedure.”

High-Priced Student Loans Spell Trouble

AP Online September 30, 2007 The near doubling in the cost of a college degree the past decade has produced an explosion in high-priced student loans that could haunt the U.S. economy for years.

While scholarship, grant money and government-backed student loans – whose interest rates are capped – have taken up some of the slack, many families and individual students have turned to private loans, which carry fees and interest rates that are often variable and up to 20 percent.

Many in the next generation of workers will be so debt-burdened they will have to delay home purchases, limit vacations, even eat out less to pay loans off on time.

Kristin Cole, 30, who graduated from Michigan State University’s law school and lives in Grand Rapids, Mich., owes $150,000 in private and government-backed student loans. Her monthly payment of $660, which consumes a quarter of her take-home pay, is scheduled to jump to $800 in a year or so, confronting her with stark financial choices.

“I could never buy a house. I can’t travel; I can’t do anything,” she said. “I feel like a prisoner.” A legal aid worker, Cole said she may need to get a job at a law firm, “doing something that I’m not real dedicated to, just for the sake of being able to live.” Parents are still the primary source of funds for many students, but the dynamics were radically altered in recent years as tuition costs soared and sources of readily available and more costly private financing made higher education seemingly available to anyone willing to sign a loan application.

Students with no credit history and no relatives to co-sign loans (or co-signing parents with tarnished credit) were willing to bet that high-priced loans were a trade-off for a shot at the American dream. But high-paying jobs are proving elusive for many graduates.

“This is literally a new form of indenture … something that every American parent should be scared of,” said Barmak Nassirian, associate executive director of the American Association of Collegiate Registrars and Admissions Officers.

More than $17 billion in private student loans were issued last year, up from $4 billion a year in 2001. Outstanding student borrowing jumped from $38 billion in 1995 to $85 billion last year, according to experts and lawmakers. go to website citi student loans

Rocketing tuition fees made borrowing that much more appealing. Consumer prices on average rose less than 29 percent over the past 10 years while tuition, fees, and room and board at four-year public colleges and universities soared 79 percent to $12,796 a year and 65 percent to $30,367 a year at private institutions, according to the College Board.

Scholarship and grant money have increased, yet for almost 15 years, the maximum available per person in government-guaranteed student loans, which by law can’t charge rates above 6.8 percent, has remained at $23,000 total for four years. That’s less than half the average four-year tuition, room and board of $51,000 at public colleges and $121,000 at private institutions.

Sallie Mae, formally known as SLM Corp., has been on the winning side of the loan bonanza. Its portfolio of 10 million customers includes $25 billion in private and $128 billion in government-backed education loans. However, private-equity investors who had offered $25 billion to buy the company backed out last week, citing credit market weakness and a new law cutting billions of dollars in subsidies to student lenders.

Citigroup Inc., Bank of America Corp., JPMorgan Chase & Co., Wells Fargo & Co., Wachovia Corp. and Regions Financial Corp. are also big players in the private student loan business. And there has been an explosion in specialized student loan lenders, such as EduCap, Nelnet Inc., NextStudent Inc., Student Loan Corp., College Loan Corp., CIT Group Inc. and Education Finance Partners Inc. go to website citi student loans

The question is whether everyone who borrowed will be able to repay. Experts don’t track default rates on private student loans, but many predict sharp increases in years to come.

Dr. Paul-Henry Zottola, a 35-year-old periodontist in Rocky Hill, Conn., faces paying $1,600 a month on his student loan on top of a $2,300 mortgage payment and $1,500 on the loan he took out to start his practice.

His credit record remains solid but he owes more than $300,000 in student loans as he and his wife, Heather, an elementary school administrator, raise two young children.

“It would be very easy to feel crushed by it,” Zottola said in an interview. “All my income for the next 10 years is spoken for.” Meanwhile, complaints about marketing of private loans – like ads promising to approve loans worth $50,000 in just minutes – are on the rise. The complaints have made their way to lawmakers, who see a need to regulate the highly profitable and diverse group of companies and the loans they make to college students.

In August, the Senate Banking Committee approved a bill that would mandate clearer disclosure of rates and terms on private student loans. The bill also would require a 30-day comparison shopping period after loan approval, during which time the offer terms could not be altered.

New York Attorney General Andrew Cuomo said many graduates who borrowed owe as much if not more than most homeowners owe on mortgages. Unlike mortgages with clear consumer disclosure requirements – even from nonbank lenders, private lending is “the Wild West of the student loan industry,” he said in a telephone interview.

Critics say what happened in the mortgage market could happen in the student loan market. Cuomo, who conducted a nationwide investigation, said the parallels between the two markets are “provocative.” Demand for bundled student loans sold to institutional investors worldwide fueled lending to students. The market for private student loan-backed securities leapt 76 percent last year, to $16.6 billion, from $9.4 billion in 2005, according to Moody’s Investors Service.

The student loan-backed securities market has yet to suffer noticeable effects of a global credit squeeze that was triggered this summer by a mortgage meltdown of borrowers with risky credit.

“Once the economy starts to slow, you’re going to see a large increase of these people in bankruptcy court,” said Robert Manning, a professor at Rochester Institute of Technology who has written about college students and credit cards.

A 2005 change to bankruptcy law puts private student loans on par with child support and alimony payments: Lenders can garnish wages if someone doesn’t pay.

Cuomo’s probe revealed what he calls an “appalling pattern of favoritism” for student lenders that provided kickbacks, revenue-sharing plans and trips to college administrators in exchange for recommended lender status. Other critics allege widespread corrupt arrangements propelled a student loan boom.

Lenders deny such charges, arguing that industry growth resulted from surging education costs and that higher interest rates are justified for unsecured loans to borrowers with blemished or insufficient credit records.

“Lenders take 100 percent of the repayment risk on flexible private-education loans made to people with limited credit histories, on which they will not get repaid for several years,” Barry Goulding, a Sallie Mae official, told Congress last spring.

New regulations could dry up access to education financing, he and other industry executives argue. Some experts are skeptical, predicting waves of student loan delinquencies and defaults on what is outstanding.

“Should private student loans suffer the same sort of failure as (subprime) mortgages, as students graduate or drop out and find themselves unable to pay, we will do serious damage not only to the lives of many students but also to the economic and social fabric of our country that depends on college graduates for its strength,” said Luke Swarthout at the U.S. Public Interest Research Group.

THE RETURN OF BJ FLORES PLUS CORY SPINKS – SECHEW POWELL ELIMINATION BOUT ON JANUARY 28TH IN SPRINGFIELD, MO

SPRINGFIELD, MO (DECEMBER 26, 2011)–Tom Morris and FM promotions is glad to team up with Danger boy events/BJ Flores and Don King Productions for two important fights on January 28th. This event will take place at the Shrine Mosque in Springfield Missouri and is starting to turn into a very entertaining night of fighting. Five professional boxing matches as well as two professional MMA matches will make this a can’t miss event for the people in Springfield, Missouri. #3 WBO world rated Cruiserweight BJ Flores will headline in the main event and Cory Spinks and Sechew Powell face off in an important IBF Jr. Middleweight eliminator fight. Flores is starting to put Springfield, Missouri on the map as far as boxing goes, and he is building an increasingly large fan base in the Springfield area. Flores sold out the last event at the O’Reily Events Center and looks to do the same thing again at the Shrine Mosque on January 28th.

Five- time world champion Cory “Next Generation” Spinks will take on former title challenger and #4 IBF World rated Sechew “Iron Horse” Powell in a pivotal fight for both fighters in their respective careers. The winner will face Cornelius Bundrage for the IBF world title on the next fight and Don King has ensured that this fight will in fact take place on the BJ Flores card on January 28th. Spinks is hoping to fight for his 6th world title with a win over the very talented Powell.

WBO #3 World rated and NABO and NABA US champion as well as WBC Continental Americas champion BJ Flores, is in heavy training for his North American championship fight on January 28th. Flores will also be fighting for the recently vacated NABF title that was given up by Nigerian World Rated Lateef Kayode in place of facing the Flores. This will be Flores third North American title fight in the last 6 months and is starting to turn some heads with the large crowds that have showed up for his July and October fights. The world rated Flores has kept a very active schedule and his recent signing with iconic promoter Don King has seem to put a bounce in his step.

Flores says, “It is an honor to have two fighters like Cory and Sechew fight on my card on January 28th in Springfield, Missouri. When I got the call from Don yesterday he told me it was a done deal. I have grown up fighting with both of these guys and have followed their careers and this is sure to be a great addition to the card and a very exciting fight for the people in Springfield, Missouri. The fans in Missouri are very energetic and I couldn’t think of a better place to stage this important elimination fight!” Flores goes on to say “I will be fighting for the third time in six months and I’m just doing what I love to do. We have offered this fight to top American contenders Andres Taylor 21-1, Aaron Williams 21-3, James Cermack 17-2, Jeremiah Graziano 15-0 and Ed Perry 18-4. We hope to have an opponent nailed down by the end of the week.”

When asked if Flores was disappointed in Lateef Kayode vacating the NABF title instead of facing him Flores said, “I understand boxing is a business. My attitude has changed. I want to fight often and the best opponents possible. After my loss to Danny Green I immediately wanted to fight a big name guy in the states. I wanted Kayode and he refused to fight me. I won the NABO interim title and instead of facing me he vacated the NABO title and I became full champion. When I moved into the #1 spot by the NABF and President Joe Dwyer informed Team Kayode that he had to face me next they said “we appreciate the opportunity but we will be vacating the title. So, I’m used to it. I’m just glad Mr. King has gotten behind this big event and is helping us promote and make it big!! Don is coming back and so am I!!”

One thing for sure is that the fans of Springfield, Missouri are in for a real treat on January 28th. The fight will be held at the historic Shrine Mosque and tix can be purchased at the Box office or on Metrotix. 1-800-293- 5949 for tickets.

Povetkin vs. Huck on February 25 in Stuttgart

Next year’s major boxing highlight has been arranged: WBO cruiserweight champion Marco Huck (34-1, 25 KOs) will challenge the WBA heavyweight champion Alexander Povetkin (23-0, 16 KOs) in Stuttgart’s Porsche-Arena on February 25, 2012. Both rivals have now struck an agreement.

“This will be the Heavyweight Fight of the Year without a doubt,” commented Kalle Sauerland. “There will be more action in this fight than we have seen in Heavyweight World Championship fights in many years. Two real gladiators with both speed and power: Huck has proven himself as the number one Cruiserweight in the world with hands of steel; Povetkin as the most exciting Heavyweight prospect seen since a young Tyson, and who last year crushed Chagaev to realise his dream of becoming World Champion. Speaking as a boxing fan who has missed big action heavyweight championship fights – the waiting is over!! I am not sure how long the fight will last but this will be an absolute must-see!”

For Marco Huck, it is a dream come true. After Alexander Povetkin defended his title against Cedric Boswell in Helsinki on December 3, Huck announced at the subsequent press conference that he wanted to challenge Povetkin. “Afterwards, we sat down and discussed the terms, and now we have reached an agreement,” said the 27-year-old. “I want to do what no other German has managed since Max Schmeling: I want to be heavyweight world champion. I am totally motivated and will give everything I have got to reach this goal.”

Sauerland’s General Manager Chris Meyer has welcomed the outcome of the negotiations. “I am delighted that we have been able to fulfil Marco’s dream of fighting for a world title in the heavyweight division,” he said. “But it is going to be a very tough fight for both of them, and it cannot get much more dramatic than this – it is a real highlight.” All that is now missing to seal the WBA World Title fight is the Association’s consent. “Usually, Alexander Povetkin would now be due for a mandatory title defence, but since both fighters have agreed, we will be asking the WBA for a special permission to be made for this voluntary title defence.”

Melson Hits the Jackpot; Knocks out Lugo in Three!

Atlantic City, NJ (December 20, 2011) – Captain Boyd “Rainmaker” Melson of New York City scored his seventh victory in as many bouts following a sensational knockout of Daniel Lugo last Saturday evening at Atlantic City’s Boardwalk Hall.

The West Point graduate outboxed his hard charging opponent over the first two frames, landing cleanly to both the body and head. In the third, Melson dominated Lugo, before unloading a straight left followed by a hard right hook which put him down for the count at 2:01. However, his most powerful moment inside the ring succeeded the bout.

After being declared the winner, Melson took the microphone and notified the crowd that he’s donating his entire purse to Justadollarplease.org in support of America’s first Clinical Trial using Umbilical Cord Cells. His post fight speech, which details how the trial could aid millions of Americans with severe Spinal Cord Injuries, clearly moved those in attendance.

He shared for the first time that the trial was scheduled to take place in January at Austin, TX’s Brackenridge Hospital, but unfortunately had to be rescheduled for the summer because of insufficient funds. Melson closed his speech by sharing that he’d continue donating his future fight purses to assist the trial.

Upon receiving applause from the audience, Melson responded with “your clapping is nice, but I don’t need claps…I need you to go to teamfighttowalk.com, click on the link to donate to justadollarplease.org and give one dollar.”

Fans quickly made their way over to Melson and made donations to help support the trial.

“This was a night I’ll never forget,” said Melson. “With the help of Johnson and Johnson matching my donations 2:1 after every single purse donated, I’ve raised about $30,000. “With the knockout punch and support of those in attendance, I feel like I hit the jackpot twice.”

Melson’s next bout is scheduled for January 21 at New York City’s Roseland Ballroom.

In association with Justadollarplease, Melson created Team Fight to Walk, whose mission is to raise awareness within the boxing community about the importance of stem cell research for spinal cord injuries. Team Fight to Walk is comprised of Melson, former two-time cruiserweight champion Steve “USS” Cunningham, title contender DeAndre “The Bull” Latimore, Edgar “El Chamaco” Santana, Hector Camacho Jr., 2008 US Olympian Shawn Estrada, and prospects Sid “The Messenger” El Harrak, Denis “Da Momma’s Boy” Douglin, Frank Galarza, Vinny “The Lion” O’Brien, Ahmed “Prince of Egypt” Samir and Delen “Sniper” Parsley.

Lara to take on Hearns plus Gary Russell on Ortiz – Berto II undercard

Dan Rafael of espn.com is reporting that Jr. Middleweight Erislandy Lara will take on former world title challenger Ronald Hearns plus undefeated Featherweight prospect will see action on the Victor Ortiz – Andre Berto undercard that will take place on February 11th on Showtime. All three bouts will be televised.

“We are happy to have Lara back in the ring and I have a feeling it will be a great 2012 for him. This fight is only going to be the start of a great year for him,” said Richard Schaefer of Golden Boy Promotions. “At 154 pounds he is a threat to anyone and we are also excited about having Gary on the card. He’s one of the best prospects in boxing.”

“I think it’s a good fight and a good fight for Lara to stay sharp in and then move on to bigger and better things,” said Luis DeCubas Jr. who manages Lara. “We’re really pleased to be on such a big card. Ronald comes from a good background. He’s tall and lanky and has good power like his dad (newly elected International Boxing Hall of Famer Thomas Hearns) and I think Lara deals well with tall, lanky guys. I just have to get the kid back in the ring. I would love a huge fight for him, but he has to just get back in the ring.”

“Ronald is the right guy for Lara to shine against,” DeCubas said. “Lara wants to fight the best guys in the world but they won’t fight him, so let’s see where this takes us. Lara is willing to move up a few pounds to show he would be a good candidate to fight (middleweight champ) Sergio Martinez or any other top middleweight.

“It’s an interesting fight because Ronald can really punch and he is the bigger man than Lara,” said Lou DiBella, Hearns’ promoter. “This is definitely a winnable fight for Ronald and I know he’s going there to win.”

Ward decisions Froch to win to become unified champ and Super Six King

ATLANTIC CITY, NJ–Andre Ward made his claim to be the best Super Middleweight in world as he pounded out a lopsided twelve round unanimous decision over Carl Froch to retain the WBA and capture the WBC, Ring Magazine and Super Six world Boxing Classic Championships.

Ward was masterful in every way and he looked like a seasoned baseball pitcher dealing for nine innings but in this case it was for twelve rounds. Froch was kept off balance by the diversity of punches coming from the hands of Ward as when it looked like Froch expected a jab, a lead left hook would either land in his face or the body of the British fighter.

The two would engage in some serious exchanges but it was always Ward landing first and last which drew ooohs and ahhs from the crowd at Boardwalk Hall. Ward continued his variety as he even started bullying Froch on the inside and landing hard shots to the body. Froch was a step slow during most of the exchanges and Ward built up an insurmountable lead.

Froch started to get in some offense midway through round eleven and the beginning of round twelve as Ward seemed to slow just a little bit which gave Froch just a little glimmer of hope but Ward was never in any danger and cruised home to the victory.

Ward, 168 lbs of Oakland, CA remains perfect and is now 25-0 with the 115-113; 115-113 and 118-110 victory victory. Froch, 167 1/2 lbs of Nottingham, ENG is now 28-2.

“It’s supernatural. These are all great fighters. That’s why you don’t hear me talking badly about them before the fight. I know what I’m getting into. I just want to be a little bit better on the night of the fight.”

“He’s very good defensively,” Froch said of Ward. “I couldn’t get my shots off. I never found myself in the range. Ward was either too close and smothering me or too far away.”

“Right away, I was actually surprised how slow Froch was,” said Ward. “We were just able to beat him to the punch and that’s what won us the fight.”

Froch was gracious in defeat and offered no excuses. “I lost tonight, fair and square. I had a bad night.”

He elaborated, “I couldn’t get anything going. He’s very slippery. It was very frustrating for me. It was a bad night.”

In a bloody eight round Light Heavyweight bout, Cornelius White scored a unanimous decision over Yordanis Despaigne.

Both guys were cut with Despaigne cut from a punch in the opening frame. The blood was evident as both were wearing white trunks and by the end of the fight both were turned crimson. It was White who pushed the action and landed the more volume shots.

White, 173 lbs of Houston, TX won by score of 60-53; 59-55 and 59-55 and is now 18-1. Despaigne, 174 1/2 lbs of Coral Gables, FL is now 9-2.

Former world title challenger Edison Miranda scored a fifth round stoppage over Kariz Kairuki in a scheduled eight round Light Heavyweight bout.

Miranda rocked Kairuki in round one with a big right hand and controlled the action until the fifth when he landed a big right that sent Kairuki and his mouthpiece to the canvas. After Miranda charged Kairuki and knocked him down before he had a chance to replace the mouthpiece but no knockdown was ruled. Miranda then battered Kairuki with hard right and left and referee Alan Huggins stopped the bout at 2:15 of round five.

Miranda, 175 lbs of Carolina, PR is now 35-6 with thirty knockouts. kairuki, 174 1/2 lbs of Tampa, FL is now 24-10-2

Bowie Tupou hung on and scored a ten round unanimous decision over Donnell Holmes in a Heavyweight bout that featured fighters with only one defeat.

The action was mostly slow paced with Tupou scoring with little combinations while Holmes was following Tupou around the ring. Tupou dropped Holmes in round seven from a hard over hand right. Holmes shook it off and finished the round. Holmes made a late stand in the final frame as he landed two hard left hooks that got the attention of Tupou but he was never in any serious danger.

Tupou, 242 lbs of Los Angeles, CA won by scores of 95-94; 96-93 and 95-94 and is now 26-1. Holmes, 226 lbs of Ivanhoe, NC is now 33-2.

Heavyweight John Lennox battered Jeremiah Witherspoon and scored a third round stoppage in a scheduled four round bout.

Lennox landed a hard combination that sent Witherspoon into the ropes and he quickly followed up by landing a hige barrage that rocked the head of Witherspoon back and forth several times before the bout was stopped fifty seconds into the round.

Jones Demolishes Williams in Oklahoma City!

Oklahoma City, OK (December 16, 2011) – Top-flight welterweight Carson Jones retained his USBA championship with a sensational fourth round stoppage of 2000 Olympic Silver Medalist Ricardo Williams Thursday evening at Oklahoma City’s Remington Park.

Backed by a large group of supporters, Jones was in complete control from the opening bell. The Oklahoma City native decked his highly touted opponent on three separate occasions, forcing referee Steve Smoger to halt the contest at 1:21 of round four. With the victory, Jones put himself in line for world title shot.

“He was a tough opponent and it felt good to be the first guy to stop him” said the 25 year-old Jones, the IBF’s third rated welterweight who improved to 33-8-2 with 23 KO’s after knocking out his seventh consecutive opponent. “God has done a lot for me and I’m thankful to be in the position I’m in.”

Jones’ promoter also believes that his fighter earned his right to challenge for a world championship due to his level of opposition.

“After last night, nobody should question his legitimacy as a title contender,” stated Bobby Dobbs of HD Boxing. “Carson’s earned his shot the hard way by stopping quality fighters. After knocking out Michael Clark, Said Ouali and now Ricardo Williams, we’re definitely ready to fight for the IBF title in 2012.”

HD Boxing’s next card takes place January 26 at the Coca Cola Event Center in Oklahoma City.

Hernandez-Cunningham II set for February 4 in Frankfurt

IBF Cruiserweight Champion Yoan Pablo Hernandez (25-1, 13 KOs) and Steve Cunningham (24-3, 12 KOs) will meet again in Frankfurt on February 4. Hernandez had dethroned his American opponent on October 1, winning a technical decision in Neubrandenburg. The fight was stopped on cuts, with Hernandez ahead on the scorecards after scoring a first-round knockdown. “The rematch will be a real treat for boxing fans,” Team Sauerland General Manager Chris Meyer said. “Hernandez against Cunningham, that´s as good as it gets in the cruiserweight division. Their first fight was a thriller and I am sure the rematch will be even more exciting.”

In the co-featured main event, Enad Licina (21-3, 11 KOs) will face former amateur world champion Alexander Alexeev (22-2, 20 KOs) for the vacant European Cruiserweight Title. European Light Heavyweight Champion Eduard Gutknecht (22-1, 9 KOs) also defends his title against Viacheslav Uzelkov (25-1, 16 KOs).

WBC orders Hopkins – Dawson rematch

At the WBC Convention in Las Vegas, the sanctioning body ordered a rematch of the October 15th Light Heavyweight title fight that saw Bernard Hopkins and Chad Dawson fight to a no-contest after Hopkins hurt his shoulder in the second round.

Gary Shaw, Dawson’s promoter, was pleased with the WBC’s decision.

“I think justice has been served,” he said. “When Hopkins had a draw with Pascal, the WBC gave him an immediate rematch. And now they have done the same thing for Dawson after the controversy.”

“Let’s get the ball rolling,” Hopkins, who turns 47 next month, told ESPN.com after leaving the convention. “The fans got cheated because of circumstances in the first fight. Now they get an opportunity to get their money’s worth. It’s been a really interesting 48 hours. Things are different now because of that (order). Let’s get it on. The bottom line is a champion defends his belt. That’s what champions do. I believe I am the best at light heavyweight. So my whole thing is champions defend, they don’t get stripped, they don’t throw belts away. I’ve done it for 20 years and I ain’t changing my stripes today.”

“Whatever is best economically without having my belt stripped then I’m fine with that,” he said. “I duck no one. I never did. But if the fans and the people and the networks believe that Chad Dawson don’t draw bees to honey — and this is a business — then that is what it is. I’ve earned this championship belt and I am not ready to leave.”

“My record speaks for itself. I’m normally victorious the second time round,” he said.

“I think that there is no interest in this fight,” he said. “As long as the fighters know that, and they are OK with whatever money there is, then why would I want to stop that fight from happening? I really just want to do fights the public would want to see and where I know going into the fight that it will be entertaining. I just don’t think that these two styles mesh.”

The WBC also ordered Middleweight champion Julio cesar Chavez Jr. to defend against Sergio Martinez

“Chavez has to fight Martinez next unless we make a deal,” said Martinez promoter Lou DiBella said. “But we have leverage. So we’ll talk to (Top Rank’s Bob) Arum and to HBO and see what we can work out.”

Latest Repo Ric Signing Paul Cano Turns Pro Tonight

California’s Central Valley is becoming one of the hotbeds of young boxing talent in the country, and the latest promising fighter to emerge from the amateurs and turn professional does so tonight. Clovis’ Paul Cano, who recently signed on with noted manager and boxing hype man Repo Ric, makes his debut in a four-round welterweight bout on the Telefutura Solo Boxeo undercard at the Woodland Community & Senior Center in Woodland, California.

Cano has been one of the top amateurs in the nation over the last two years. In addition to numerous state titles, Cano advanced to the quarterfinals of the 2010 USA Boxing National Championships and took part in the National Golden Gloves that same year. Despite his amateur credentials, Cano’s style is tailored made for the pros.

“The pitty pat amateur style was never really Paul’s fortay,” says Pete Lopes, Cano’s trainer. “He could do it, but he was definitely more suited for the pros. He’s a banger. He has a high punch ratio. Very tough. Granite chin. Rock hard body. Just a really hard worker. A strong Mexican fighter that I think the fans are going to love.”

Repo first got to know Cano while working with Saul Lomas, who was a promising fighter out of the Fresno area before an injury cut short his career in 2007. In fact, Lomas was a great inspiration for Cano wanting to become a pro boxer. “I used to see Repo Ric bring in one of his pro fighters, Saul Lomas, who was coming up,” recalls Cano. “Saul had a good aura and the way he was having fun with the sport of boxing and he was able to make a living out of boxing. I knew right then that is what I wanted to do. My coach, Pete Lopes, was actually Saul Lomas’ manager, so I saw him quite a bit. Seeing him be a professional boxer made me realize I could do the same thing he was doing. I still talk to him at this time and he gives me little pointers on becoming pro and he’s still someone the Central Valley looks up to as far as boxing goes.”

When the decision was made to turn professional, it was Lopes that reached out and sought Repo’s assistance in moving Cano’s career. “I think Repo helps us in so many facets,” explains Lopes. “He is a great hype man and he takes a lot of the pressure off of the fighters, especially young fighters when they first start. He takes a lot of the anxiety and that energy off of the fighter. I’ve been in the dressing room when he has done that. He kind of puts the focus on him when the energy might beat up on one your fighters, he absorbs that. Also, I know he is respected by matchmakers and promoters because he is a really hard worker. He is the type of guy that will get in a car and drive across the state. He will do the little things and he will do the big things. He studies the game, he studies boxing. He lives it. He is very competitive and I like that about him. He wants to be the best and he strives to be the best. He has a unique character that he’s created and a unique way about him and sometimes you need that. I don’t really want my fighters to be characters so much. I want them to develop their style and perception in the ring. But when you have a guy like Repo, he can kind of ease the anxiety and make a fighter more relaxed and focused on what’s at hand.”

For Cano’s debut, he takes on a solid opponent in Jonathan Chicas (3-0, 2 KOs) of San Francisco, California. It is a fight handlers of a fighter with as much potential as Cano rarely take right out of the gate, but Lopes and Repo have a different philosophy and believe in their fighter.

“We are not going to look for 30 bums to fight and have a soft career and then get challenged,” says Lopes. “We are going to fight quality fights, quality individuals, and we are going to try to move up the ranks and make something happen. The goal is to become prizefighters and challenge for a world championship one day.”

The path to a world championship begins tonight in Woodland.

Robb Aims to Close 2011 with a Bang

Rising super featherweight prospect Guy Robb plans to cap his successful 2011 campaign with a knockout as he takes on durable Hugo Ramos this Friday night at the Woodland Community & Senior Center in Woodland, California. The six-round encounter is the televised co-feature of Telefutura’s Solo Boxeo broadcast.

Despite Ramos’ diminutive record, the Palm Springs, California-based fighter has a reputation of being a tough out for up-and-coming prospects. Ramos has gone the distance with six different undefeated opponents, twice against still unbeaten Jonathan Arrellano. Ramos’ only stoppage defeat came against Khabir Suleymanov back in 2009, in a fight he was leading on two cards.

Robb’s manager Repo Ric knows Ramos well, and believes he will provide a good test for his fighter. “Hugo Ramos can fight,” says Repo. “Don’t think he can’t fight, because he can fight. He is 3-10-2, but yes he can fight. It’s not going to be a cakewalk. It is going to be some work.”

Despite Ramos’ stats, Robb (6-0, 2 KOs) believes he can close the show in convincing fashion. “I’m looking to take this guy out,” says the confident Robb. “I don’t expect it to go to the decision. His record is not that great, but he’s fought a lot of tough people and supposed to be a road warrior, but that don’t make no difference to me. I always have the same objective, and that is just to tear him up.”

Despite getting word of the fight on relatively short notice, Robb was more than ready to step into the ring when his phone rang. “I’m always training like a madman,” says Robb, who sparred with fellow prospects Stan Martyniouk, Roman Morales and Bruno Escalante among others. “I just stay in the gym. I take the whole boxing thing serious. I am always trying to get stronger and better and learn more, whether I have a fight or don’t have a fight. I’m always in the gym working.”

Friday’s bout takes place in Woodland, which is just a short drive from Robb’s Sacramento home. “It is always great to fight in front of all my people,” says Robb, who fought three times in nearby Fairfield this year. “They have been having a lot of shows around here and I think everybody has been loving it – especially me. There is going to be a big crowd. I’ve been selling tickets, and people are telling me they are going to buy their tickets at the door. So we are going to have a good turnout.”

The fight with Ramos, Robb’s sixth of 2011, will conclude his first full year as a professional fighter. “I’m happy with my team and how things are going,” explains Robb. “We are getting experience and that is what I need. Within time, we’ll be up there. We’re climbing up this mountain and at this point I’m happy. We are just going to keep getting better.”

Robb’s manager expects big things from his budding star, and believes Friday’s bout will be the Sacramento favorite’s last as a promotional free agent. “He should be signing with somebody right after this, guaranteed,” said Repo.

A knockout on Friday and on to bigger and better things in 2012. That is the plan.

Tickets for Friday’s event, promoted by Golden Boy Promotions, Don Chargin Productions, Paco Presents and Jorge Marron Productions, are available by calling Paco’s Mexican Restaurant in Woodland at 530-669-7946, Taqueria Guadalajara #1 in Woodland at 530-668-0628 or Travis Credit Union in Woodland at 530-668-0573.

– Saturday, December 17, 2011 7:00pm ET featuring Dead Serious Two from Rahway Rec Center, NJ. In the main event, Dead Serious MMA Featherweight Champion RJ Starace (3-3) fights Daniel Carbonel (5-6). Starace won the title at the inaugural DSMMA event in October with a unanimous victory in a bout that was a barnburner. The champ is back and ready for his first title defense as he looks to keep his career moving in the right direction. For Carbonel, three of his five wins have come via submission, so don’t be surprised if Carbonel looks for a takedown early in Round 1. Carbonel is on a two-fight win streak and looks to make it three in a row and take home the Dead Serious 145 lb title in the process. The featherweight division is one of the sport’s most exciting divisions, so don’t blink during the main event, because it will look like two Tasmanian Devils attacking one another. In another tri-main event, Stephen Regman (5-2) fresh of a victory at Dead Serious One and the reigning Welterweight Champion will defend his title against Michael Sanders (4-1). Regman is known for his hand speed and power, but he also showed in his last fight that he has great cardio conditioning and enough in the tank to win a hard fought decision as well. For Sanders, he is coming off a submission victory in less than a minute for a championship in another organization, so expect him to want to pick up right where he left off and look to take Regman down to the mat and apply another quick submission. In the third title fight of the evening, Dead Serious Lightweight Champion Jonathan Pecyna (4-2) battles undefeated fighter Chris Sladky (2-0). Pecyna won the title by choke in spectacular fashion and is set to defend his title and end 2011 with a bang

– Saturday, December 17, 2011 9:00pm ET featuring Ring of Fire 42 – Who’s Next, 1st Bank Center, Bloomfield, CO. Headlining the event will be a battle of two of the top Featherweight prospects in the country. Former ROF Champion Tyler THUNDER Toner (12-3) will be going after another “W” against one of the region’s most dangerous fighters Nick Macias (9-4). After the conclusion of ROF 41 there was no one more deserving of a standing ovation then Colorado’s Tyler Toner. In one of the most amazing displays of heart and tenacity, Toner struggled to hold off a stronger opponent, JR Sims for 3 rounds. In what became a comeback for the ages, Toner stunned Sims late in the 3rd and continued to press the attack until the referee was forced to stop the fight? The entire arena was on its feet and the feeling was electric. Making his debut to the RING OF FIRE and the 145lb weight class is former IFL Champion Ryan THE LION Schultz. Schultz is an American mixed martial artist that has competed in some of the world’s most recognized fighting organizations including the WEC, Sengoku, and the IFL. With a strong background in wrestling, several years of experience, and an explosive fighting style, Ryan is a fierce competitor and one of the sport’s most exciting fighters to watch. Shultz was always known as one of the bigger 155 lb fighters and will be huge at 145. Shultz started his career with the famous Team Quest in the Pacific North West. But the Nebraska native moved back towards his roots and now runs TRIALS MMA in Ft. Collins, CO with UFC fighter Ed Herman. Michelle BOBCAT Blalock is quickly becoming a fan favorite at ROF. Her high energy entrances to the cage, and high intensity inside the cage gets the fans on their feet. Her trademark growl across the cage has both her opponent and some of the VIP’s front row having second thoughts. Blalock is a Sambo based fighter and has a perfect record of 7-0. She has finished all but one of her opponents. She will be making her 2nd defense of the promotions’ 125 lb Young Gun Belt at ROF 42: WHO’S NEXT. A win here will put her in the top rankings and open up opportunities internationally as well. After 3 opponents dropping out, Strikeforce veteran Lacey THE LADY Schuckman has agreed to face Blalock for the belt. Shuckman has a 6-4 MMA record and is coming off of her pro boxing debut, where she TKO’ed her opponent in the first round. The fighter making the fastest rise up the ranks is high level wrestler Justin THE HIGHLIGHT Gaethje. He has moved through every opponent put in front of him and has a perfect 9-0 record. After his first few fights ROF promoter Sven Bean gave him the nick name “THE HIGHLIGHT”. “This kid is a stud, if he gets his hands on you there is a great chance you will be flying through the air. The nick name was a natural because after every one of his fights we have 4-5 highlights for the next fight. He is going to go as far as he wants in this sport.” said Bean. Already more than one MMA reporter has noticed his resemblance in style to an early Matt Hughes, if that is any indication as to his future..it is very bright. Facing Gaethje will be Donnie THE HITMAN Bell from Grand Pararie, Texas. The 21 year old fighter has Record 6-1 record and a strong wrestling background as well. He was Texas State wrestling champion, and at the college level wrestled in Iowa under Luke Moffat. Industry insiders are already laying odds as to this bout taking Fight of the Night Honors.

– Sunday, December 18, 2011 (Tape Delayed VOD Next week) featuring Thai Fight – 2011 Finals, Bangkok, Thailand. Buakaw Por. Pramuk from Thailand faces Frankie Giorgio from Australia in the 154 lb tournament finale. Buakaw has been dubbed a “national treasure” of Thailand and is the heavy favorite going into the bout against Giorgi in front of his homeland of Thailand. This is a matchup of conflicting styles in this super welterweight battle as Buakaw is a precision striker, who darts in to land strikes and then moves to a safe distance before his opponent can launch his own attack, while Giorgio has been compared to the movie character, Rocky, for his ability to wade into punches and kicks and absorb a lot of punishment while dishing out his own. Giorgi will need a Rocky-type performance as Buakaw has not been beaten since his days where he dominated K-1 many years ago. Kem Sitsongpeenong from Thailand battles last year’s Thai Fight Tournament Champion, Fabio Pinca from France in the 147 lb tournament final. Pinca’s WBC World Welterweight Championship will also be on the line in this bout as he looks to repeat as Thai Fight Champion in back to back years. Kem defeated Pinca earlier in their careers but this bout will be an entirely different animal. Both fighters have grown since their first meeting and if anything, all it will do is light a fire under Pinca’s belly to avenge the loss. Kem will have the home crowd at his side and will need all the help he can get as Pinca has been on a hot streak for the last two years. Pinca is also a wizard at tight grappling and clinch work, so he will prove a tough test for Kem when they two go to battle on the inside.

CALIFORNIA STATE ATHLETIC COMMISSION OVERTURNS HOPKINS VS. DAWSON FROM TECHNICAL KNOCKOUT TO NO DECISION

LOS ANGELES (December 13) – The holidays came early today for Bernard “The Executioner” Hopkins when the California State Athletic Commission (CSAC) overturned the decision that dealt the oldest champion in boxing history a controversial technical knockout loss to “Bad” Chad Dawson on October 15 at STAPLES Center in Los Angeles. The outcome of the hearing, which took place at the CSAC’s regularly scheduled meeting, changed the TKO loss to a no decision on Hopkins’ record, leaving no doubt that he is still the light heavyweight world champion.

“Justice was served today,” Hopkins said. “I am thrilled that the California State Athletic Commission did the right thing and removed that loss from my record. Mistakes happen, but what you do to fix those mistakes is what counts.”

“I’m very pleased that the California State Athletic Commission did the right thing and ruled that the result of Hopkins-Dawson was a no decision rather than a TKO loss for Hopkins,” said Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer. “As the old saying goes, ‘there’s a reason that pencils have erasers’ and I commend the Commission for having the courage to correct an error which wrongfully put a blemish on Bernard Hopkins’ record. We now look forward to making Bernard’s next history-making fight.”

“The footage of the fight that was reviewed over and over again, proved to be the key testimony,” said Hopkins. “I think it came down to the tape. Both of our sides were making good points, but it was a dinner without a turkey. The tape was the turkey. I am happy this ordeal is over. Now I can focus on continuing to rehab my shoulder and get ready to fight again, hopefully early next year. I will start my usual boxing routine in a couple of weeks and get ready to defend my titles again.”
