Alexander-Maidana; Broner – Perez on February 25th in St. Louis

Dan Rafael of espn.com is reporting that an HBO Boxing After Dark doubleheader has been inked for February 25th in St. Louis that will feature former Jr. Welterweight champions Devon Alexander battling Marcos Maidana while the co-feature will pit WBO Jr. Lightweight champion Adrien Broner taking on mandatory challenger Eloy Perez.

“Devon’s like a big brother to me,” Broner said Monday night. “I grew up with him through the amateurs. Feb. 25, you can’t ask for nothin’ better than this card.”

“I have emails from both sides confirming the fights. Everything is agreed on and I have a deal with HBO,” said Golden Boy Promotions Richard Schaefer.

Maidana-Alexander has been in the works for about a month.

“They both feel that they are going to have an even bigger impact on the sport in the higher weight class,” Schaefer said. “Devon, based on what I am hearing, he feels significantly better at 147 than he did at 140.

“For Maidana, I think you can put him in any weight class and he’s exciting as hell. Give or take a few pounds, it doesn’t matter. He is a warrior and he will fight anyone and make it exciting.”

“I think it’s going to be a great fight and fan friendly,” Kevin Cunningham, Alexander’s manager and trainer said. “Devon at 147 will have the speed, snap and energy that allows him to perform at 100 percent. St. Louis is a fight town and has always supported the St. Louis fighters. Devon has a special bond with his community and on Feb. 25 they are going to come out in full force to support him.”

“Eloy is an exciting guy, Broner is an exciting guy, so it’s a fight I am looking forward to seeing. I think it’s a toe-to-toe fight. I think Broner has the talent and charisma we need in boxing. What fighter asks his father to comb his hair during his interview with (HBO’s) Max Kellerman? He is an entertainer and a terrific young fighter.”

Said Broner, “I know a lot that want to see me lose and a lot that want to see me win. Perez will come prepared but I am going to come in the ring fresh, fly and flashy, and I’m going to have my brush with me. He’s good, 23-0 with seven knockouts, but from his record, he can’t punch his way out of a wet paper bag. But he’s obviously good and has always come out on top in his fights.

“Against me, he’s gonna be just like the other 22 I have faced. This is going to be his first ‘L.’ I’m not going looking for the KO, but I just don’t feel he will last 12 rounds with me

Overstock’s brash CEO delivers 1st annual profit overstockcouponcodenow.org overstock coupon code

AP Online April 5, 2010 | PAUL FOY If Overstock.com’s unconventional CEO had a defining moment, it might have been a conference call he had with investors five years ago.

For an hour, Patrick Byrne lashed out at what he called a conspiracy of short sellers and others plotting to destroy his company’s share price so a “bottom feeder” could take over the Internet discounter. Byrne says his point was to expose “crooked” hedge funds and how federal regulators were powerless to stop them.

“We’ve got a group of parasites who have found a loophole that they can keep on using to just drain resources out of entrepreneurs in America, and in the process kill small companies,” Byrne thundered on the call.

The jury is still out on many of these claims. Byrne has filed a lawsuit that he says will put major brokerage houses on trial next year to face allegations they abetted a questionable form of trading called naked short selling.

But Overstock.com Inc. reported its first annual profit Wednesday, giving Byrne a win in his personal crusade. Shares of the company rose more than 30 percent, almost passing their 52-week high of $17.99. The stock has traded as low as $8.94 in the past year.

The company’s narrow 2009 gain of $7.7 million, Byrne said, proves that those who traded presuming Overstock’s weaknesses were wrong and vindicates his tumultuous effort to position the company as a challenger to the Goliaths of Internet retail.

Overstock’s challenge is to remain a price leader in an increasingly crowded market where practically anyone can make a sale from a consumer’s Google search, said Nathaniel Schindler, an analyst at Merrill Lynch.

“You can find good inventory and deals on the Internet elsewhere. That just makes it tougher for them,” he said.

Byrne says the company, which has 1,260 employees, recognizes that problem and is continually adjusting prices to meet the competition.

When explosive growth made the company appear promising, the stock hit a high of more than $77 in 2004, valuing the company at nearly $1.5 billion. Competing online retailer Amazon.com Inc.’s market capitalization is nearly 40 times larger.

Yet out-of-control costs, especially for marketing, bungled technology overhauls and Byrne’s preoccupation with short sellers marked a decade where Overstock racked up about $250 million in losses, and the recession has helped drive the share price into the teens.

Overstock’s business plan is to provide brand-name manufacturers a place to dump surplus inventory without “polluting” their traditional retail channels. This allows Overstock to sell designer merchandise such as Prada and Gucci at up to 40 percent discounts.

Byrne’s company has gradually become more of an order-taker for other retailers’ surplus inventories, cutting back on how much merchandise it buys outright and warehouses.

Now, the 47-year-old chairman and CEO believes Overstock is entering a period of sustained profitability and catching up to competitors. Yet Amazon has revenues nearly 30 times larger, while eBay Inc. focuses on auctions that broker the sale of 40 times as much merchandise.

Overstock’s revenue, just $1.8 million in 1999, climbed to nearly $877 million in 2009. But growth has slowed since 2005, and sales rose 6 percent in the tough economy of 2009.

Other factors have also made it a rough ride for the Cottonwood Heights, Utah, company.

Since Byrne took Overstock public in 2002, he has derided Wall Street and faced a series of financial restatements as federal regulators opened a broader inquiry into the company’s accounting problems. He’s accused financial journalists of aiding the short-sellers that can profit from the company’s decline, calling one blogger a “hedge fund towel boy.” Byrne, who owns nearly 30 percent of the company’s shares, says Overstock’s accounting errors were generally conservative. The latest involved 0.1 percent of revenue and gave the company no advantage, he said.

Byrne also wandered into other business lines, buying a travel company, and introducing an auction service and car and real-estate listings. He even tried to buy a diamond mine.

“He was trying to do too much, but think of it as experiments,” said his father, Jack Byrne, a highly regarded former insurance executive who was Overstock’s chairman for its first three years. “Every once in a while, one of those experiments hits.” One constant is that in the blogs and in the courts, Patrick Byrne has beat a drum over stock manipulation conspiracies that he says a “captured” media refuses to cover.

Legitimate short sellers borrow and sell shares of stock hoping the price declines so they can buy back shares at lower prices and return them to brokers, pocketing the difference. That’s routine, but it can be a violation for brokers to “lend” shares they don’t hold and have difficulty obtaining. That “failure to deliver” can drive down the price of a company’s stock, Byrne said.

The industry-owned Depository Trust and Clearing Corp. has acknowledged that so-called naked shorting exists but says it’s a trifling problem.

One of Byrne’s loudest critics, Sam E. Antar, says the CEO is just diverting attention from the company’s problems. go to website overstock coupon code

Antar, the 52-year-old former chief financial officer of the Crazy Eddie electronics chain, said he’s flagged many material changes in Overstock’s finances that the company didn’t disclose to the Securities and Exchange Commission.

Antar, who writes for whitecollarfraud.com and lectures corporations and law enforcement groups on fraud, says it takes one to know one. He was convicted in 1991 of cooking Crazy Eddie’s books.

Byrne responds that “it’s like hearing Bernie Madoff say I’m a bad guy.” Byrne has won others over.

“Patrick talked about naked shorting years ago and was considered a nut-case for it. But he’s been proven 100 percent right, and for that reason he has been vilified by Wall Street, which hates him,” said Sam Mitchell, a managing director for Toronto-based insurer Fairfax Financial Holdings, a major Overstock shareholder.

On the eve of Byrne’s infamous conference call, Overstock took aim in a lawsuit against well-known short seller David Rocker, accusing him of conspiring with stock-research firm Gradient Analytics to publish critical reports on Overstock. Rocker vigorously denied it.

Overstock received a $5 million settlement in December from a successor to Rocker’s hedge fund, Copper River Partners, which admitted no wrongdoing and said it was cheaper than fighting Byrne’s lawsuit. Phoenix-based Gradient Analytics settled earlier.

A larger case is pending. In 2007, Byrne filed a $3.4 billion lawsuit against brokers Morgan Stanley & Co., Goldman Sachs & Co., Bear Stearns Cos., Bank of America Securities LLC, The Bank of New York, Citigroup Inc., Credit Suisse (USA) Inc. and others. The firms say Byrne’s allegations of a naked short selling conspiracy are without merit.

Trial is set for September 2011.

Ring of fire 42 who’s next Live IPPV on GFL

Denver, Colorado – RING OF FIRE MMA returns to Colorado!! For the past eleven years ROFMMA has launched the careers of countless superstars of the sport. Carwin. Cerrone. Condit. Ludwig. Henderson. Garcia. Schaub. The list goes on and on…

On Saturday Dec 17th at the 1STBANK Center MMA fans will get the opportunity to find out WHO’S NEXT by Watching LIVE iPPV at either http://rofmma.com/v2/live/ or www.GFL.tv.

Headlining the event will be a battle of two of the top Featherweight prospects in the country. Former ROF Champion Tyler THUNDER Toner (12-3) will be going after another “W” against one of the region’s most dangerous fighters Nick Macias (9-4).

After the conclusion of ROF 41 there was no one more deserving of a standing ovation then Colorado’s Tyler Toner. In one of the most amazing displays of heart and tenacity, Toner struggled to hold off a stronger opponent, JR Sims for 3 rounds. In what became a comeback for the ages, Toner stunned Sims late in the 3rd and continued to press the attack until the referee was forced to stop the fight? The entire arena was on its feet and the feeling was electric. In that moment Toner also cemented his spot in the main event for ROF 42: WHO’S NEXT.

ROF Promoter Sven BOOGIE Bean was so impressed he immediately made up his mind to bring Toner back for the next event. “Tyler is exactly the kind of fighter the ROF fans want to see. He has a never give up mentality and is always looking to finish fights, even when the chips are down. He has been a fixture with Ring Of Fire since 2005 and I am proud to have him headline this show.”

Toner was able to string enough wins on ROF events to get the call to the WEC and eventually the UFC. Under the Zuffa banner he had 3 wars that were great battles, but after losing two decisions, the talent laden promotion was forced to cut him loose with the familiar “go out, get a couple wins, and we’ll bring you right back”

Toner is just one win from that goal, and is looking to finish his opponent Nick Macias in any means necessary.

Nick Macias is known for his hard hitting, aggressive in your face style of fighting. He has amassed a 9-4 MMA record, and is riding a 4 fight win streak. Macias might just be the perfect foil for Toner’s plans and also has his sights set on a larger contract. A win against Toner would put Macias in position to advance his career to the next step and steal some of Toner’s THUNDER along the way. Macias is coming into the fight fresh off a victory of one of Toner’s stable mates, BJJ Black Belt Josh Ford. Macias was able to use his style to control the bout against the decorated grappler, and win a unanimous decision. Macias trains with UFC vet Chris Camozzi out of Factory X Muay Thai. This camp is quickly making waves in the fight community and is showing that it is a team to be reckoned with in the talent heavy region.

Making his debut to the RING OF FIRE and the 145lb weight class is former IFL Champion Ryan THE LION Schultz. Schultz is an American mixed martial artist that has competed in some of the world’s most recognized fighting organizations including the WEC, Sengoku, and the IFL. With a strong background in wrestling, several years of experience, and an explosive fighting style, Ryan is a fierce competitor and one of the sport’s most exciting fighters to watch. Shultz was always known as one of the bigger 155 lb fighters and will be huge at 145. Shultz started his career with the famous Team Quest in the Pacific North West. But the Nebraska native moved back towards his roots and now runs TRIALS MMA in Ft. Collins, CO with UFC fighter Ed Herman.

Michelle BOBCAT Blalock is quickly becoming a fan favorite at ROF. Her high energy entrances to the cage, and high intensity inside the cage gets the fans on their feet. Her trademark growl across the cage has both her opponent and some of the VIP’s front row having second thoughts. Blalock is a Sambo based fighter and has a perfect record of 7-0. She has finished all but one of her opponents. She will be making her 2nd defense of the promotions’ 125 lb Young Gun Belt at ROF 42: WHO’S NEXT. A win here will put her in the top rankings and open up opportunities internationally as well. After 3 opponents dropping out, Strikeforce veteran Lacey THE LADY Schuckman has agreed to face Blalock for the belt. Shuckman has a 6-4 MMA record and is coming off of her pro boxing debut, where she TKO’ed her opponent in the first round.

The fighter making the fastest rise up the ranks is high level wrestler Justin THE HIGHLIGHT Gaethje. He has moved through every opponent put in front of him and has a perfect 9-0 record. After his first few fights ROF promoter Sven Bean gave him the nick name “THE HIGHLIGHT”. “This kid is a stud, if he gets his hands on you there is a great chance you will be flying through the air. The nick name was a natural because after every one of his fights we have 4-5 highlights for the next fight. He is going to go as far as he wants in this sport.” said Bean. Already more than one MMA reporter has noticed his resemblance in style to an early Matt Hughes, if that is any indication as to his future..it is very bright. Facing Gaethje will be Donnie THE HITMAN Bell from Grand Pararie, Texas. The 21 year old fighter has Record 6-1 record and a strong wrestling background as well. He was Texas State wrestling champion, and at the college level wrestled in Iowa under Luke Moffat. Industry insiders are already laying odds as to this bout taking Fight of the Night Honors.

As always the ROF card will be stacked from top to bottom with the best fighters in the region. This event will feature the return of a few fan favorites and some fighters making their ROFMMA debut as well.

Morales to defend agiast Garcia; Kirkland to battle Molina on January 28 on HBO

Dan Rafael of espn.com is reporting that a solid doubleheader will take place on January 28th in Houston when WBC Super Lightweight champion Erik Morales will take on undefeated upstart Danny Garcia while the co-feature will pit Jr. Middleweights James Kirkland and Carlos Molina.

“Everything has been agreed to. These are two excellent fights,” said Richard Schaefer of Golden Boy Promotions. “I think Morales-Garcia is definitely a crossroads fight. Erik is excited about going back to Texas. For Danny, it is an amazing opportunity to fight a legend like Erik Morales. He is thrilled beyond belief. He is going to want to make the best out of it.”

“I think it’s going to be a good fight because of the styles of these two guys,” Schaefer said. “It can only be an exciting fight, a toe-to-toe battle. You know the way Erik fights and the way Danny fights.

“Erik was ringside at Danny’s fight against Holt and Erik has never turned down anybody. He feels he’s going to teach the youngster a lesson. He feels that this is a very winnable fight for him otherwise he wouldn’t take it.”

“You saw the performance against Maidana. Erik made it clear that he is back,” Schaefer said. “Let’s see what he can do against a young, strong fighter like Danny Garcia. It’s a dangerous fight for Erik and for Danny. Erik is one of the most experienced fighters and has shown that the time he took off was good for him. He is back, his body is back and he feels good.

“Erik Morales fights everybody and he said he feels Danny Garcia is very mechanical and he will expose him. He said, ‘I have the style and skills and experience to beat the young, mechanical guy.’ Let’s see. Danny is one of the young guns.”

“I really couldn’t believe it, it’s a like a dream come true,” Garcia told ESPN.com. “I am happy for the opportunity. Erik Morales was a great fighter, but now it’s time for a new generation. It’s time for a new champion. We haven’t signed a contract yet, but the fight is verbally agreed to and I feel like this is the perfect time for me.

“I just fought one of the hardest punchers (Holt) in the division. I feel Erik Morales is a great fighter, but I feel like he had his day. He is the champion because of politics. I will be champion because I will take that belt off of him. I grew up watching Morales. Me and my friends were big fans. He is a great fighter, so to be in the ring with him will be a pleasure. I guess he’s looking at me like his last fight, fighting a young guy to use his experience against. But I am not the same fighter as the last kid. Why he took the fight with me I don’t know, but he is in for a tough fight.”

“We like the fight. Carlos is busy, he’s slick and he’s durable,” promoter Leon Margules said. “He is also a legitimate 12-round fighter. He has good stamina. We know Kirkland is a great puncher, but if he gets through the first couple of rounds when Kirkland is dangerous, then I think he can outwork him.”

Said Schaefer, “James Kirkland has clearly established himself again in the 154-pound weight class with his thrilling performance against Alfredo Angulo. He showed everything. James Kirkland is back. With Carlos Molina, you have a very skilled fighter who has come up with the biggest wins of his career recently and he feels this is a winnable fight. Both fights on this card are explosive. That’s the right word.”

Morales is 52-7 with thirty-six knockouts. Garcia is 22-0 with fourteen knockouts and ranked number seven by 15rounds.com

Kirkland 30-1 with twenty-seven knockouts is ranked number nine by 15rounds.com Molina is 19-4-2 with knockouts is ranked number seven by 15rounds.com

Battle in D.C, Peterson Dethrones Khan in a Classic!

WASHINGTON, D.C – British sensation Amir Khan (26-2, 18KOs) made his debut at the Nation’s Capital of United States in hopes to successfully defend his unified WBA/IBF jr. welterweight championship against D.C’s own Lamont Peterson (30-1-1, 15KOs). The pro-Peterson crowd backed their fighter feverishly, as their man fought the fight of his life to dethrone King Khan, who was touted to be too fast, too powerful, and simply just too good for the D.C. native.

From the opening seconds, Khan was quickly on the offensive, throwing a fast one-two and connecting with a right cross. Peterson did his best remain composed, but ate a left hook that sent him to the canvas for a quick eight count towards the end of the round. Peterson focused to the body and stalked his moving target in round two, but Khan’s versatility and quick hands were a bit superior. Peterson assaulted Khan with hard body shots in round three that had the Brit in serious trouble. Khan was hurt after taking a hard right and combinations against the ropes, but held on to finish the round. Body attack resumed in the fourth, but Khan returned with combinations of his own. Again, Peterson got the better of the exchanges and his tight defense allowed him to slip most of Khan’s punches.

Khan showed resurgence in the fifth. Creating distance to avoid Peterson’s body shots, Khan circled and landed flurries downstairs and also found success with looping uppercuts and well timed lead right hands. From this point on, Khan’s strategy was to box and clinch at close quarters to prevent his opponent from focusing to the midsection. In the seventh, Khan appeared to be in control before Peterson poured on with clubbing right hands. Khan also threw an elbow that cost him a point deduction. Feeling the fatigue from all the circling around, Khan was helpless in the eighth as Peterson punished him around the ring with a variety of shots to the head and body.

The crowd cheered and roared in support of Peterson, but Khan, again, used all the tricks and guile to thwart the finish. Ninth round was a war. Peterson pursued Khan and stunned him again by the ropes, but Khan returned the favor with a left hook and a body shot that briefly had Peterson on wobbly legs. Peterson regrouped in the last thirty seconds and successfully threw right hands, splashing the sweat off Khan’s noggin.

Khan fought with discipline in the tenth, picking his shots and staying elusive for the most part. Peterson kept charging in the eleventh but often got clinched or hit with flurries before getting shoved off. Khan fought well against the ropes and got away with swift one-twos, followed by either a left hook to the body or an uppercut to the chin. Khan was deducted another point in the twelfth for using his elbow, but appear to land more to evade a 10-8 round.

In the end, there was a winner of this seesaw battle as Michael Buffer announced the official scorecards that read (113-112 2x, 111-114) in favor of the new champion, Lamont Peterson. ‘All the hard work paid off. Tough fight. It couldn’t have been a better night. I would definitely give him a rematch’ said the newly crowned jr. welterweight champion. Khan was a bit bitter in defeat, citing the ref’s bias against him in deducting points that cost him his title, ‘It was like I was against two people in there.’ In the post fight interview, Khan also expressed his interest in a rematch.

The co-feature of the evening saw unbeaten heavyweight contender Seth Mitchell (24-0-1, 18KOs) of Brandywine, MD impressively down former contender Timur Ibragimov (30-4-1, 16KOs) of Uzbekistan. Mitchell, a local DC favorite, measured his more experience foe with peppering jabs from the outside and following up with right hands. Ibragimov closed the gap in the second, nailing Mitchell with a hard right, but ran into a hard left hook that wobbled his legs. Mitchell immediately jumped at the opportunity and unleashed a barrage of right hands that sent Ibragimov reeling across the ring. Another right hand connected against the corner and the referee stepped in to stop the bout at the 2:48 mark.

Southeast, Washington, DC’s Anthony Peterson pleased his hometown crowd with a dominant unanimous decision win over the heavily faded former world title challenger Daniel Attah (26-9-1, 9KOs) after eight rounds.

Peterson, holding advantages in multiple facets, controlled the action from round one with attack to the body and backing his smaller foe against the ropes. Attah, a former Olympian, was mostly in retreat mode, unable to put together any offensive output against the naturally bigger Peterson. Peterson rocked Attah in round four, but Attah regrouped and finished the round. Attah, being the wily veteran, tried his best to counter from his southpaw stance and tie up, but to very little effect as Peterson landed the stronger and more telling shots to win rounds. The sixth saw another punishing round by Peterson, sustaining body attack and finding his mark with combinations up top, but Attah landed some of his best shots in retaliation. Peterson unleashed a series of uppercuts and doubled up on his left hooks in round seven. The eighth and final round told a similar story with Peterson easily taking the ‘10’.

Official scores were 80-72, 80-72, and 80-72. This was Peterson’s first fight since his disqualification loss to Brandon Rios in 2010. With the win, Peterson improves to 31-1, 20KOs.

Former highly touted middleweight contender Fernando Guerrero (22-1, 16KOs) of Salisbury, MD made his return to the ring for the first time since his upset loss to spoiler Gary Brewer, defeating St. Paul, MN’s Robert Kliewer (11-14-2, 5KOs) over five one sided rounds. Guerrero dictated the pace throughout, forcing the action with aggressive shots to the body and consecutive one-two combinations. Kliewer retaliated in spurts, but provided very little. Kliewer was dropped near the end of the fourth, but managed to survive. Guerrero resumed attack in the fifth and scored three knockdowns en route to a TKO victory. Kilewer was rendered unconscious after the third knockdown and was carried out on a stretcher. Official time of the stoppage was 0:45 of the fifth round. — Joon Lee

Hollywood, CA’s Jamie Kavanagh (8-0-1, 3KOs) and Puerto Rico’s Ramesis Gil (6-3-5, 5KOs) fought to a draw in a tactical battle over six rounds of lightweight contest. Kavanagh was cut over the right eye from what appeared to be a headbutt in round two. Both guys fought patiently, carefully measuring shots to the head. Ramesis was more of the aggressor, stalking his more mobile opponent and seemingly held the edge in power shots. After three competitive rounds, Kavanagh got his groove going in the fourth and fifth, utilizing his superior footwork to land effective jabs and right hands to scores points. The sixth round was close. Scores were 58-56 (for Kavanagh), 57-57, and 57-57.

Seventeen year old Dusty Harrison took out winless Terrell Davis in round one of a scheduled four round Welterweight bout.

Harrison dropped Davis twice with hard rights to the head and ended the mismatch with crushing right to the body and the bout was stopped at 2:46 of round one.

Harrison, 144 lbs of Washington, DC is now 3-0 with one knockout. Davis of Washington, DC is now 0-5.

In lightweight action, Terron Grant of White Plains, MD improved his mark to 2-0, 1KO with an easy first round stoppage win over Dashawn Autry (0-2) of Garland, NC. It was simply a mismatch in terms of skills and talent as Grant overwhelmed the awkwardly balanced Autry with an onslaught of unanswered array of body shots and hard right hands to the head. Time of the stoppage was 1:10 of the first round. —Joon Lee

In the opening bout of the evening, Joshua Davis scored a four round unanimous decision over Chris Russell in a Lightweight bout.

Davis landed some heavy shots in the fourth round while blood dripped form the nose of Russell.

Davis, 134 lbs of White Plains, MD won by scores of 40-36; 39-37 and 39-37 and is now 2-0. Russell, 134 lbs of Shattuck, OK falls to 2-8-1.

Middleweight Thomas Baldwin Looks To Remain Unbeaten Next Week In North Bergen

In his young fight career middleweight Thomas Baldwin has made some noise due to his punching power and unrelenting work ethic. Next Thursday, December 15, Baldwin will be looking to extend his unbeaten record to 3-0 as he will be fighting Dominique Foster at Schuetzen Park in North Bergen.

Baldwin (2-0-1, 1 KO) has displayed much skill and poise in his first three fights as a professional, showing off both his power and conditioning.

He gravitated towards the sport early on, and although where he grew up football and basketball were the majority sports played, he kept his passion for boxing alive inside of him.

“After football I would come home and watch old fight tapes of Ali and do my best to emulate him shadow boxing,” said Baldwin.

Baldwin continued his progression with boxing in college until he suffered an ACL injury that sidelined him for a while, in which he put on weight and jumped up to 215 pounds.

“The injury was a blessing,” said Baldwin. “Once I was healed up I began boxing full time, and knew that’s what I wanted to do.”

Although he hasn’t fought in over a year, Baldwin is anxious to get inside the ropes next Thursday.

Baldwin attributes his early success due to his work ethic and his supportive team. “Terrific and all the guys at Global Boxing are the best,” said Baldwin. “The work and sparring I get with those guys is top level. And working with Steve Frank has been huge for my progression.”

Following his fight next week, Baldwin has expressed much interest in fighting regularly in 2012. “I definitely want to fight consistently going forward; I’d like to get two fights in November and two in December,” said Baldwin. “Whenever they call me I know I will be ready; I just want to get out there to showcase my skills and let the public see more of me.”

Baldwin is currently managed under formed heavyweight knockout artist Lou Esa of Winning Method Management.

“Lastly, I’d like to give a shot out to all my team for always keeping me strong; Terrific, Steve Frank, Lou Esa and all of my friends and family, co-worker…everyone for keeping me going and supporting me.”

NBC Sports Network Fight Night Premiere January 21, 2011 – Asylum Arena, Philadelphia Eddie Chambers vs. Sergei Liakhovich

Philadelphia heavyweight contender “Fast” Eddie Chambers takes on former World Heavyweight Champion Sergei “White Wolf” Liakhovich on Saturday, January 21st when the NBC Sports Network (currently named VERSUS) brings its inaugural NBC Sports Network Fight Night broadcast to the City of Brotherly Love.

Making his first hometown appearance since 2008, Chambers, (36-2, 18 KO’s), who learned to fight in Philly’s legendary gyms, will have his hands full when he faces “The White Wolf” of Scottsdale, AZ (25-4, 16 KO’s) at Philadelphia’s Asylum Arena. A former Russian Olympian, Liakhovich is an aggressive, heavy-handed competitor who rarely takes a step backwards and always makes great fights. His epic 2006 brawl with Lamon Brewster, when the native of Vitebsk, Belarus won the WBO Heavyweight Championship, is still characterized by many boxing pundits as the best heavyweight fight of the past ten years.

Opening the television broadcast at 9 p.m. will be a blistering junior middleweight battle between “King” Gabriel Rosado of Philadelphia (18-5, 10 KO’s) and Jesus Soto-Karass of Tijuana, Mexico (24-6, 16 KO’s). “Soto-Karass made his reputation in two wars with Mike Jones,” NBCSN Fight Night’s Hall of Fame matchmaker Russell Peltz said, referring to a recent pair of thrilling bouts involving Soto-Karass and Jones, the world’s number one welterweight contender. “Rosado vs. Soto-Karass is a huge fight in Philly,” he commented. “It’s the kind of bout where records don’t matter. It’s all about the fight in the ring and there will be action from the first bell.”

“Our ambition with this series is to make interesting, competitive fights that are relevant to the markets where they take place,” said promoter Kathy Duva of Main Events. “In short, fights that people would pay to see. I think that this card delivers on all of those counts and I can’t wait to experience the atmosphere at the Asylum when the fighters touch gloves.”

Promoted by Main Events, Peltz Productions and Goossen Tutor, the non-televised undercard fights will begin at 7 p.m. The remainder of the card will be announced in the coming weeks.

Tickets priced at $45 and $65 can be reserved by calling Peltz Boxing, (215) 765-0922.

NEW POINT OF VIEW; DESIGNER HARLAN BRANDON IS GAINING A FAST FOOTHOLD IN THE MEN’S FASHION MARKET WITH A LINE OF SHOES THAT ARE RIGHT ON STYLE AND PRICE.

Footwear News August 2, 2004 Byline: Barbara Schneider-Levy With a shoe line less than a year old, Harlan Brandon is already making waves in the fashion industry.

The designer’s signature dress collection, which hit stores in May ’04, was sparked by a former footwear agent in China who asked him why little to no footwear brands are targeted specifically toward African-Americans. see here lenox square mall

“It was a good question, and we began figuring out how we could find a way to do a [project] together,” recalled Brandon, who has spent more than a decade designing for brands such as Fila, Fratelli Rossetti, Nautica and Tommy Hilfiger.

The result is Harlan Brandon Footwear, based in Upper Montclair, N.J. Focused on appealing to what he describes as a church-going, African-American-man’s sense of style and price, the line retails for between $98 and $120 and features a range of dress and dress-casual styles that include looks such as a black ankle boot with a softly squared toe, a slip-on with ornament trim and a classic monk strap.

For spring ’05, Brandon is continuing in a neoclassical direction. However, he said, “I am lightening things up with a perfed and woven story. I am doing a series of spectators in combinations like brown and cream. In silhouettes, there will be chiseled toes, but none will be too forward.” To reach his prime target shopper, Brandon put his advertising background to good use by creating a marketing plan that avoided the usual channels. He took his message straight to the source, first introducing the line at the Christian Cultural Center in Brooklyn, N.Y., a predominantly black congregation with some 10,000 members, where he and his family attend.

At the coaxing of his pastor, Brandon began sharing his concept with fellow parishioners in an effort to illustrate the importance of black-owned businesses to the community at large. To Brandon, his message is an inspirational one for other potential entrepreneurs. “We can change our communities ourselves,” he said. Brandon stressed, though, that while he may have a leg up when it comes to selling to his fellow African-American males, he is acutely aware that “In order to make money, I have to have a good product.” While targeting a consumer who is often typified by a faster, slicker approach to fashion, Brandon’s Italian-made collection of contemporary classics has begun to attract a range of customer types. “Everybody wears everything today,” he said. “The shoes speak to one’s lifestyle.” In the short time since Brandon’s shoes have been available, they’ve been embraced by leading African-American celebrities such as Denzel Washington, Wesley Snipes and Isaac Hayes.

To Rick Payne, divisional VP of Rich’s-Macy’s, Lazarus-Macy’s and Goldsmith-Macy’s, that lifestyle resides neatly between the stores’ Stacy Adams and Mezlan businesses. For fall, Payne has placed orders for Brandon’s Davidson, a center-seam lace-up; Josh, a cap-toe in deerskin; and John, a slip-on with metal logo ornament. go to site lenox square mall

“There’s no question that in department stores today, new upcoming urban or ethnic brands are making an impact in streetwear as well as other areas,” said Payne, although he noted that non-apparel areas such as footwear have not been as aggressive.

While initial deliveries were expected in June at Rich’s locations in the Lenox Square Mall and Cumberland Mall in downtown Atlanta, Payne said the line could soon be expanded into more doors. The Lenox location, which caters to a consumer base that is about 30 percent to 40 percent ethnic, makes up 10 percent of Rich’s total shoe business, and, said Payne, presents the line’s best opportunity for success.

Indeed, Brandon’s prime target audience is a potentially lucrative one. According to Ken Smikle, president of Chicago-based Target Market News, a black consumer market authority, the buying power among African-Americans is growing.

In 2002, their earnings hit the $631-billion mark, of which $1.7 billion was spent on men’s shoes. It’s no surprise, then, that major department-store chains looking to cash in on the rising trend have picked up the line.

But Brenda Scott, director of vendor development for Federated Department Stores Inc., said the appeal of Harlan Brandon Footwear is even larger than that. “We are focused on working with and finding opportunities with minorities and women-owned businesses,” she said. But, Scott added, “For any minority and women-owned businesses looking to do business with Federated or any other retail company, the [entrepreneur] needs to know the industry, know what niche they’re going after and what … they can bring to the table.” Caption(s): The designer (above) has created a line of dress and dress-casual shoes that includes the exotic print slip-on (left) and softly square-toed monk strap (right).

cffc 12 – pollard vs soto Live IPPV on GFL

Atlantic City, New Jersey – Cage Fury Fighting Championships returns December 10 to Atlantic City, New Jersey as it presents CFFC 12 – Pollard vs Soto at the Resorts Hotel and Casino and Live iPPV Broadcast on www.GFL.tv. The exciting card is loaded with the top fighters on the East Coast and is headlined by 4 TITLE FIGHTS! CFFC has been on a rampage since its re-launch and MMA fans in the Tri-State area won’t want to miss this stacked card.

In the main event, CFFC Welterweight Champion, Chip “The Surgeon” Pollard (5-2) defends his title for the first time against UFC veteran Greg Soto (8-2). Pollard won the title last July in an upset against former champ Joey Rivera by TKO due to cuts. Things won’t get any easier for the new champ as his first title defense is against Soto who just had a 3-fight stint in the UFC. Pollard got the nickname “The Surgeon” because of his pinpoint accuracy and he will need to be on-point with his strikes as Soto is grappling wizard so if things hit the mat, it will be to Soto’s advantage.

The CFFC Light Heavyweight Title will also be on the line as undefeated amateur Daniel Holmes will make his pro debut against Chris “The Finisher” Sydnor (1-5). Holmes was quite impressive during his amateur tenure, even winning a title. He looks to make a splash into the professional ranks as he is fighting for another title in his first pro bout. For Sydnor, he fought for and won earlier this year in CFFC by KO and that victory made quite an impression on the CFFC officials as they now matched him up in a title fight.

Chris “The Story” Liguori (13-9) battles Don Carlo-Clauss (7-5) for the vacant CFFC Lightweight Title. Both fighters have fought at 170 lb their entire careers, so this will be an interesting fight to see if the added weight cut will have adverse effects on their performances. Earlier this year, Liguori had a hard fought, tough, split decision loss in a CFFC Welterweight Title, but came back strong in his next bout picking up a victory by KO. For Liguori, a win against Carlo-Clauss would close out a busy year with CFFC on a great note for the Ricardo Almeida student. Carlo-Clauss is coming off of a tough loss on the Strikeforce: Fedor VS Silva card and looks to put that past him and close out the year as CFFC Lightweight Champion. Carlo-Clauss’ biggest attribute is his cardio conditioning as he likes to grind out his opponents for decisions, so the extra weight cut down to 155 lb could be very instrumental into Carlo-Clauss’ game plan going into the fight. Expect a “fight of the night” here as these two gladiators will come out guns blazing.

The final title on the line will crown the CFFC Featherweight Champion as undefeated fighters Steve Perez (2-0) fights Dan Cion (3-0) in what is sure to be a barnburner. Perez won both of his fights earlier this year inside the CFFC cage by submission and looks to make it number three against Cion. For Cion, who is also a CFFC veteran, he prefers to pressure his opponents for a whole fight, and where them down and winning by decision. It will be a clash of styles and game plans as these to 145 lb scrappers hook horns in the CFFC cage.

RODRIGUEZ DOMINATES WOLAK

December 5, Bronx, NY….Joe DeGuardia’s Star Boxing’s prize Jr. Middleweight Delvin Rodriguez (26-5-2 14KO Danbury, CT) scored the most impressive win of his career Saturday night at the sold out Madison Square Garden as he pitched a near shutout over highly rated Pawel Wolak (29-2-1 19KO Mt. Arlington, NJ) over the 10 round distance. The unanimous scores read 98-92, 98-91, and 100-90 by the 3 judges at ringside.

The rematch of their first epic encounter on July 15 of this year was vastly different as Rodriguez used a razor like jab and sharp combinations from the opening bell to stymie Wolak’s attack. Wolak tried his best in his ever pressing style but one could see early that this was going to be Rodriguez’ night.

Both fighters were willing early but by the 4th round Rodriguez started to take over using all the punches in his arsenal to go along with deft foot movement as he started to pile up the points. As the bell sounded for the 10th and final round, both fighters received a well desevered ovation from the crowd and Rodriguez immediately went to work stunning Wolak with several combinations. As the round wore on Rodriguez went for the knockout, much to the crowds delight, as he continually unleashed devestating punches to Wolak’s body and head. To his credit, Wolak hung in gamely to the final bell and the crowd roared its approval as the fight ended.

It was clearly Delvin’ most significant win to date. Star Boxing’s founder and CEO Joe DeGuardia had this to say about his fighter, ” Delvin fought like a champion tonight. He rose to the occasion like true champions do. Further he showed in round 10 that from here on, Delvin is prepared to go for it all. After a long and hard road for Delvin, I believe Delvin has turned the corner and showed he has what it takes to be on the big stage and reach his goals”. Star Boxing congratulates Delvin, his manager AJ Galante and trainer Fernely Feliz.

The Rodriguez-Wolak bout was part of the Pay-Per-View telecast of the Miguel Cotto-Antonio Margarito fight held Saturday night at Madison Square Garden in NYC, NY.

Mattel’s got a monster holiday hit, but will franchise have staying power? Monster High ‘transmedia’ play expands beyond dolls to merchandise, apparel and entertainment.

Advertising Age December 6, 2010 | Bulik, Beth Snyder Byline: BETH SNYDER BULIK Good luck finding Ghoulia Yelps this Christmas.

The newest doll in Mattel’s hot Monster High line has “not lasted on the shelf more than 21 minutes,” said TimeToPlayMag.com editor-in-chief Jim Silver. In fact, Mattel has stopped selling the dolls–its first original franchise since Hot Wheels in 1968–on its website anymore, and a spokeswoman said the company is “producing everything we can.” Scarcity has driven up prices from original suggested retail of $16.99 to well over $40 on eBay and Amazon.

Monster High, a line of teen dolls from the makers of Barbie packaged as the children of famous monsters like Dracula and Frankenstein, have names like Draculaura and Frankie Stein, a “Twilight” twist, hip street fashions and complicated backstories. Draculaura, for instance, is a vegan who faints at the sight of blood.

But for Mattel, this is just the beginning. Monster High is intended to be a much bigger franchise than dolls–it’s a transmedia play that extends to merchandise, apparel and entertainment.

The brand, introduced in July, includes merchandise and entertainment ranging from Monster High-branded clothing at Justice (now out of stock, although a new line of branded clothing and accessories will arrive in January, the Mattel spokeswoman said); cosmetics, jewelry, and dolls at Claire’s; Halloween costumes at Party City; a music video and webisode series online with a dedicated YouTube channel; a chapter book for teens, written by popular teen author Lisi Harrison (“The Clique” and “The Alphas” series); a Halloween TV special on Nickelodeon, and coming in 2012, a full-length live-action musical movie to be produced by the same team behind “Hairspray” and “Chicago.” Macy’s will join as a partner in January with its own exclusive Monster High T-shirts. monsterhighwiki.org monster high wiki

While the strategy and marketing has been carefully crafted over more than three years to reach tween and teen girls, it’s also a unique and potentially risky ploy. go to website monster high wiki

Take media, for example. With the exception of one TV special, the animated “shows” are series of 90-second webisodes only available online. Traditional advertising has been small as well, with one TV commercial at launch in this fall (no longer on air) and a smattering of fourth-quarter print in tween-targeted pubs including Seventeen and Tiger Beat magazines. WPP’s Y&R is the agency.

“Monster High is working. The new business model is reaching teens where they live, congregate, play and interact with their friends in the digital media space,” said Reyne Rice, toy trend expert for the Toy Industry Association. This is a “trans-media storytelling model, since it did not start with a traditional entertainment property first.” The tween and teen audience Mattel is targeting already seem to get it. “We’ve heard girls talk about the shows, but we said ‘wait a minute, there aren’t any shows.’ But regardless of whether it’s on TV or on an iPad in the backseat of the car, it’s a show to them,” said Wynne Tyree, president of Smarty Pants, a youth and family research and brand consultancy.

Mattel wouldn’t say how much it has invested in Monster High, but analysts peg the figure at easily millions of dollars, reflecting its importance for the company.

And Mattel already has some validation of Monster High’s success. In its fiscal third quarter ending in September, it reported that worldwide sales of “other” doll brands, that is, those other than Barbie, were up 7% over last year, “driven primarily by strong performance of the Disney Princess doll line and the introduction of the Monster High doll line,” according to a press release. Overall, Mattel’s girls and boys brand business was up 8% year-over-year, with $1.17 billion in sales.

There has been some grumbling on the blogs that Mattel may have stoked the scarcity by under-producing. But Tim Kilpin, general manager, Mattel Brands, in a statement attributed the shortage to “the brand’s popularity and retailers managing their inventory tightly … We manufactured as much Monster High toys as we could to meet forecasted demand.” While Mattel has certainly tapped into the current trend of vampire and monster chic, will Monster High be able to sustain the heat?

“Mattel has believed in it from the very beginning,” Mr. Silver said. “They saw kids’ reaction early and felt they had a hit. I’d call it a calculated risk. A lot of time, money and effort have gone into Monster High. Something like this can last only a few years, no one can predict if it will go on for 10 or 20 years–but it absolutely could.” Bulik, Beth Snyder

DECORATED PHILADELPHIA AMATEUR BOXER DAMON ALLEN SETS RECORD STRAIGHT DRUG BAN

PHILADELPHIA (December 5, 2011)—This past week it was announced that prized Philadelphia Amateur Damon Allen was banned by USADA (United States Anti Doping Agency) for using a banned substance during competition.

Allen, nineteen years old wanted to set the record straight on the circumstances surrounding the suspension.

Allen has a record of 110-9 and was a Silver Medalist at the 2010 Golden Gloves; 2011 Bronze Medal winner at the United States championship and is going to compete in the Olympic Qualifying Tournament.

“Funding from Sprint for Life enables us to continue desperately needed research to change these dismal numbers and make significant strides in eradicating ovarian cancer,” said Anil K. Sood, director of the Blanton-Davis Ovarian Cancer Research Program.

Founding families of the Blanton-Davis Ovarian Cancer Research Program have accepted the honor of chairing this year’s milestone event. Event chairs are Kelli Blanton and Eddy Scurlock Blanton Sr., Lee Davis and Gayle Goodman.

Erdei injures hand; out of New Years eve title bout with Cloud

Undefeated former two division champion Zsolt Erdei injured his hand and has been forced to withdraw from his New Years eve showdown with IBF Light Heavyweight champion Tavoris Cloud according to Dan Rafael of espn.com.

“He’s been waiting for this opportunity, so he is not a happy camper,” said Erdei’s promoter Lou DiBella of Erdei. “He’s upset, but if you can’t fight, you can’t fight, and the doctor is telling him he can’t fight.

“We are looking at all options and hope to have an answer by Monday,” Showtime’s Gordon Hall told ESPN.com.

Weigh in Drama as Scales beat Rios and loses WBA Belt

At todays’s weigh in for the big rematch between Miguel Cotto and Antonio Margarito, WBA Lightweight champion Brandon Rios was about a pound and a half over the mandated 135 pound limit and was forced to relinquish his belt. His opponent John Murray can beome champion with a victory over Rios on Saturday night’s mega card at Madison square Garden.

According to espn.com, Murray’s team threatened to call off the fight, but eventually extracted concessions from Rios. He will pay Murray $20,000 from his $325,000 purse, a nice increase for Murray, who is due $50,000 plus a piece of British television revenue.

Also, to prevent Rios from blowing up in weight overnight, Murray’s camp insisted that Rios not weigh more than 147 pounds at 9 a.m. ET Saturday. If he is over 147, the fight could be called off.

“I think that may play to my advantage, but I’m just going to concentrate on myself,” Murray said. “I’ll let him worry about himself. I’m just going to stay on my game and do my business. I’m not upset at all. I’m just focused on doing my business (Saturday) night.

“We had already prepared to take him into the deep waters. This is a great opportunity for a guy like me. Fights like this are the fights that I want. I want to be in the center of the ring, hammering away to see who is going to be left standing, him or me.”

“He’s been in a colder climate than he’s used to and that probably hurt him trying to make weight,” Carl Moretti of Top Rank, Rios’ promoter, said of the Southern California fighter. “He’s a big 135-pounder. He just couldn’t get down. The question is what happens Saturday night and in the future? I think it’s too soon to say that he’s done at 135 but he could be. We’ll have to talk about with him and his team, see if maybe he went about making weight the wrong way. But he looked drained, very drained.”
