In the main event, for WBC INTERNATIONAL CHALLENGE SUPER LIGHTWEIGHT TITLE, Gabriel Varga takes on Justin “The Purple People Eater” Greskiewicz. This will be a rematch fight as the two fought previously and Varga defeated Greskiewicz by unanimous decision. Varga recently fought and won the WFK World Title in September under the K-1 banner against Dutch striker Roy Tan by third round knockout. Earlier in the year, Varga also won the WKN World Lightweight Title by defeating Frenchman Yohan Ha Van by unanimous decision. Greskiewicz recently won a rubber match against tough opponent Turan Hasanov by decision and followed that up with a victory in October against Eddie Martinez at Battle at Bally’s. Expect “The Purple People Eater” to do his best James Brown impression and try to give Varga “The Big Payback” in this headlining bout. In the co-main event, James “B-52” Smith of New Jersey fights Ryan Murray out of Greg Nelson’s Camp in Minnesota (the same camp where former UFC Heavyweight Champion and WWE World Champion Brock Lesnar trained). This is a battle of two of the top cruiserweights in North America and should be in the running for “fight of the night” as Smith and Murray only have one speed and that’s overdrive. – Saturday, December 3, 2011 10:00pm ET featuring MMA Epic Fighting 9, Sheraton Hotel, San Diego, CA. The 15-bout card is the culmination of a lot of hard work as the hotly anticipated California State Mixed Martial Arts Finals are finally here. There’s no telling what is going to happen in the 2011 EPIC Fighting finale featuring the richest talent-laden amateur tournament to hit California’s mixed martial arts scene ever. Fighters from both Southern and Northern California will be competing in this impressive event where the stars of tomorrow will compete today. In one of the co-main events, Richard Parra (6-4) battles Francisco “Panchito” Castro (5-3) in a featherweight tussle. Parra trains at The Pit, world famous for being the home of former UFC Champion Chuck “The Iceman” Liddell. Parra utilizes the same style as Liddell as 5 of his 6 wins have come via KO or TKO. For Castro, who is riding a 4-fight win streak he prefers to grind out his opponents and break their will as 4 of his 5 victories have come via decision. Expect the clash of styles between these two warriors to make for an exciting fight as they try to take the next step in their MMA careers and become Champion of California. Nobody puts on high octane fights like the lighter weight athletes so assume Parra versus Castro will be in the running for “fight of the night”. In another high profile match and a battle of undefeated fighters, Mike Flach (5-0) meets Lamar Reed (4-0) in a middleweight bout. Flach is a well-rounded fighter with victories coming via KO and submission. The Millennia MMA trained athlete will need everything in his arsenal to defeat Reed. For Reed, fighting out of Oakdale MMA’s Last Stand Fight, he will look to utilize his wrestling advantage which he has successful used to shut down all of his previous opponents. Reed is a 2X All-American in college and placed at the Greco Nationals so expect him to look for a takedown early and often. Flach will have to be able to fight from his back which is something he is very capable of doing, so this fight should be a barnburner. All of the weight classes will be on the line including, flyweight, bantamweight, featherweight, lightweight, welterweight, middleweight, light heavyweight, cruiserweight and heavyweight. That’s 9 divisions and titles that will be in the mix on Dec. 3 so don’t miss this unique opportunity to see some of the sports brightest athletes compete in the deepest amateur tournament in California history.

VIDEO: MARES – AGBEKO II PREVIEW

Morales Aims to Close First Year as a Pro in Style

At this time a year ago, super bantamweight prospect Roman Morales was basking in the glow of the gold medal he had just claimed at the prestigious Four Nations Tournament in France and contemplating leaving behind the amateurs for the paid ranks. Fast forward a year, and Morales’ first year as a professional should be considered a success. The blossoming fighting pride of San Ardo, California looks to put an exclamation point on his year tomorrow night in a six-round bout against Alejandro Castillo at the Chumash Casino Resort in Santa Ynez, California.

The Gary Shaw-promoted and Repo Ric-managed Morales (7-0, 5 KOs) was last in the ring on September 2nd, as he completely destroyed Cain Garcia inside of two rounds in Salinas, California. Morales would likely be looking for his ninth win tomorrow had a late October bout not been scuttled. The cancellation only means that Morales is even more prepared for Friday’s bout. “We just kept going, kept training,” says Morales’ trainer Rodolfo Tapia. “We didn’t stop at all, just kept going, waiting for the next fight.”

The next fight comes against Castillo (4-1, 1 KO) of Denver, Colorado by way of Ciudad Cuauhtemoc, Chihuahua, Mexico. Castillo could provide a stern test, as his only defeat came via fifth-round stoppage against former amateur standout Shawn Nichol in a bout he was leading on all three official scorecards. Castillo had put the first blemish on Nichol’s ledger via decision in their first meeting.

“We saw he fought Shawn Nichol a couple times,” says Tapia. “We know he is aggressive and comes forward. We have prepared for his style. [I had] Roman spar aggressive guys that come forward, throwing punches, body shots. He’s ready. He’s been doing pretty good.”

One of the aggressive guys Morales sparred in preparation for Friday’s bout was super bantamweight contender Glenn Porras (26-3, 17 KOs). All told Morales logged 16 rounds with Porras, who makes his U.S. debut in Santa Ynez. Tapia also took Morales down to Oxnard, California for another 16 rounds in two days. “We’ve had pretty good training,” says Tapia simply.

Looking back at the year, Tapia is happy with his charge’s progress. “He’s getting pretty good,” reports Tapia. “He’s had better fights every time. He trains hard. We think he is ready for the next step: eight rounds. It has been pretty good progress. He’s doing a lot better at everything. He has picked up little things from the guys he has been sparring. Like this time with Glenn Porras, and before with Nonito [Donaire]. He’s learned a lot from them.”

Morales aims to put everything he has learned in the gym on display tomorrow and finish his first year as a professional strong.

Tickets for the event, promoted by Gary Shaw Productions, are available online at StarTickets.com.

Alvarez retains; Broner wins in world title bouts

Saul Alvarez made the third defense of the WBC Super Welterweight title with a fifth round stoppage over former Welterweight belt holder Kermit Cintron in Mexico City.

Alvarez boxed well over the first three-plus rounds as Cintron was content on jabbing against the power punches of Alvarez. In round four, Alvarez landed a hard right that sent Cintron back and onto his knee. for a knockdown. At the end of the frame, Alvarez landed a hard left on the ropes that froze Cintron on the ropes and the challenger looked like he was ready to go. In the fifth, Alvarez withstood a brief final stand from Cintron and landed a blistering combination that had the referee jump in and stop the fight at 2:53 of round five.

In round three, Broner landed a big uppercut that set off a flurry of punches which was highlighted by a body shot that was followed by a big left hook that sent Rodriguez down on the bottom rope. With blood trickling out of his nose, Rodriguez did not even try to beat referee Frank Garza’s ten count and the bout was halted at 1:43 of round three.

Ortiz – Berto II agreed to for SHOWTIME

Dan Rafael of espn.com is reporting that former world champions Victor Ortiz & Andre Berto will rematch their 2011 Fight of the Year candidate on either January 28th or February 11th with this bout landing on Showtime rather than HBO where the first bout was televised.

Lou DiBella, Berto’s promoter, would not confirm the figures, but acknowledged that Showtime had bought the fight and was the highest bidder.

“Showtime’s offer was the highest in the marketplace,” DiBella told ESPN.com on Thursday night. “It’s good to know that they’re in the game and that a fight of this quality had interest from both networks. Competition in the marketplace is a good thing. As Andre Berto’s promoter, I am very grateful for the loyalty and investment HBO made in Berto over the years, and I know Andre is also.”

“The first fight was one of the best, most crowd-pleasing fights of the year and it’s the best thing for boxing fans that it’s going to happen again in 2012,” DiBella said. “This fight represents a good start to the year for Showtime, although I believe HBO made a good faith offer to get the fight.”

“This is something the people want and I want as well,” Berto told ESPN.com on Thursday night. “I gave up a world title for this to happen. You know how serious this is for me. I’ve been with HBO my whole career but Showtime stepped up to the plate money-wise to have it. Surprised HBO didn’t, but this is a business. So I am just looking forward (to) bringing the people the best fight possible to jump off the 2012 year with a bang.”

MIKE JONES GETTING STRONGER FOR HIS DEC. 3 FIGHT VS. SEBASTIAN LUJAN

Philadelphia, PA—Undefeated welterweight contender Mike Jones, of Philadelphia, PA, who faces two-time world title challenger Sebastian Lujan, of Rosario, Santa Fe, Argentina, in an IBF world title eliminator on the Miguel Cotto-Antonio Margarito card Dec. 3 at Madison Square Garden, has added another strength and conditioning coach to his team.

Rich Meudt, 54, who has been conditioning athletes in various sports for the last 27 years, has been working with Jones for the last two months.

“When Mike started working with me he looked like a new-born calf,” said Meudt, a retired major after a 22-year stint in the Army. “Now he’s a strong bull. His legs are firmer, stronger and explosive. His balance, conditioning and endurance are excellent. He does everything I ask him to do and he exceeds all expectations.”

Meudt was brought on board by fellow-Jones strength and conditioning coach Danny Davis, who has worked with Jones for the last several years and who is also well-known for his longtime association with Bernard Hopkins.

“I brought Rich in to focus on Mike’s legs and conditioning,” said Davis. “Rich has done a great job, bringing in his expertise and knowledge. Mike looks very strong and sharp and he’s a hard worker who wants to go to the highest level and never complains about what he’s asked to do. That’s what makes a champion.”

Jones has responded well to the rigors of the grueling sessions.

“It’s very important to do different things each and every time so that I get a little bit better for each fight,” said Jones, a workout fanatic known for his long training and fitness sessions. “I feel more stable and better balanced. My legs are a lot stronger than they were. That will make me a better fighter and more dynamic as a puncher. I’m in the best shape ever. I believe it’s (the workouts) going to pay dividends on December 3.”

Not satisfied with just adding a new conditioning coach, Jones, who stays in excellent shape and watches what he eats, also added Amy West, a weight management nutritionist, to assist him in getting the most out of his daily eating routine.
ABOUT DEC. 3

NBC Sports Group will work with Main Events and Hall-of-Fame matchmaker J Russell Peltz on a multi-promoter strategy for NBC Sports Network Fight Night designed to produce the best quality fights. It is a strategy in which any promoter can participate to get their boxers involved in these programs.

“This is a unique approach to have multiple promoters competing to put fights on NBC Sports Network,” said Jon Miller, President, programming, NBC Sports and NBC Sports Network. “That, coupled with the legendary matchmaker J Russell Peltz serving as our quality control expert, ensures that boxing fans will enjoy exciting and competitive matches.”

Rumble in the cage 45 Live IPPV on GFL

Lethbridge, Alberta, Canada – Western Canada’s premier cage fighting event returns on November 26 as Rumble in the Cage presents RITC 45 at the Lethbridge Exhibition – South Pavillion, Lethbridge, Alberta, Canada with 16 exciting bouts Live on iPPV at www.GFL.tv. Rumble in the Cage is a breeding ground for the international promotions and RITC 45 will showcase some of the rising amateur and professional mixed martial artists soon to hit the national scene.

In the main event, hometown hero and UFC veteran Jesse Bongfeldt (15-5-1) from Canadian Martial Arts Centre/Kenora MMA Gym fights Brandon MacArthur (3-17) in a middleweight tilt. Bongfeldt last fought for RITC in a title fight in which he was victorious. He then got a call up to the UFC where he had one draw and one loss. Now back at his old stomping grounds, he looks to make MacArthur his first victim on his road back to the UFC. Bongfeldt is one of the top middleweights in Canada and is an experienced grappler and strikers as many of his victories have come by way of KO or submission. For MacArthur, he is nothing if not resilient and in his 20 fights in MMA he has never backed down from a challenge. RITC was having a hard time finding an opponent for the tough Bongfeldt and MacArthur stepped up to the challenge and accepted the fight, something most wouldn’t do. For him to pull off the upset, he will need to catch Bongfeldt with a punch, kick or submission early on before the UFC vet can settle in.

In the co-main event, Brandt Dewsberry (7-1-1) battles Joe Gobiel (3-2) in a welterweight scrap. Both fighters are coming off nice submission victories in their last fights, and for one of them it will be 2 in a row. Dewsberry has more experience and should be able to use that to his advantage the longer the fight progresses. For Gobiel, he has made steady improvement in these 3 MMA bouts and if he continues to show as much advancement in this bout, it could be “fight of the night” for the fans in Lethbridge. With the main event getting the lion’s share of press and media attention, don’t let this co-main event fly under the radar. It should be a barnburner.

You won’t find a more thrilling card then this one. For more information or to purchase tickets go to www.rumbleinthecage.com. Be sure to catch all of the action LIVE on November 26 as Rumble in the Cage presents RITC 45 exclusively on pay-per-view at www.GFL.tv.

Margarito gets License approved; Fight clear for December 3rd in New York

Dan Rafael of espn.com reports that Antonio Margarito has been approved for his boxing License and will take on Miguel Cotto on December 3rd in New York’s Madison Square Garden.

Margarito was originally denied a license after it was revealed his eye was not cleared by the omission after surgery for a cataract. The figures to be a lot of boxing betting on this fight. To bet on this fight click here

“There is a fight. This gotta be a chapter in my book,” Top Rank promoter Bob Arum exclaimed after watching the commission hearing on a live webcast. The commission had reservations about licensing Margarito because of a serious eye injury he suffered in a lopsided decision loss to Manny Pacquiao last November. Margarito suffered a badly broken orbital bone in his face and developed a cataract in his right eye.

“We went through a lot and Antonio saw every doctor he was asked to see and all of them gave us the same news — that everything was great and that there was no reason for him not to be approved,” Sergio Diaz, Margarito’s co-manager, said. “When we told Antonio he was licensed, he was screaming and he was happy. Now he is saying he has to take care of business come Dec. 3.

“We understood New York was trying to cover themselves and get assurances from the doctor they picked. But we felt confident all this time,” said Margarito’s co-manager Sergio Diaz.

“Evidence has been introduced, including an affidavit from the applicant himself, detailing the rehabilitation steps taken to ensure that all of the rules of the commission will be followed,” Torres said. “After due consideration of the evidence of rehabilitation the commission finds the issuance of a license to the applicant not to be contrary to the best interests of boxing.”

“Further, following the thorough examination performed by Dr. Goldstein and his testimony that it is his opinion that the condition of Mr. Margarito’s eye is such that he is fit to be in the ring, the commission rules that Mr. Margarito’s petition for licensure in New York is granted.”
Moretti, who was at Tuesday’s meeting with Top Rank president Todd duBoef, and Margarito’s attorneys, David Moroso and Daniel Petrocelli, said they were all pleased with the commission vote.

“The tension in the room, you could cut it with a knife,” he said. “I’m drained because all Todd and I wanted, and what all of us wanted, was for this fight to happen in New York because it’s important for the sport. You have a Madison Square Garden that is almost sold out — and I bet it will be sold out in the next day or two — with electricity running through it. If we had to move the show, it wouldn’t have had the same impact. Just the fact that we got the license and it came down to the 11th and half hour, it’s unreal.”

Said Diaz, “It’s been a real pain in the neck but it was something we had to go through. We couldn’t run. Antonio has been fighting for this. There wasn’t anything any of us were trying to hide about his injury. We were open to any kind of exam.”

Arum was glad the saga was over.

“I think you got to commend the commission that they were thoughtful and deliberative and that having Margarito fly in to be examined by a doctor designated by them, while an inconvenience, I think was something that was good to do because you can have doctors opining about this and that, but if they don’t examine the patient you can’t get a full feel,” Arum said. “That being said, the criticism I have is why wasn’t this done before the press conference (to announce the fight) in September? One way or another it would alleviated all the problems.

“If he had passed at that time none of this would have occurred. If not, we would have moved on to another state because we felt that having had him treated by Crandall, the leading (eye) doctor in the country, maybe the world, and having a retinal specialist check him out, morally we were on the high ground. We believed his eye was as good as anyone’s based on Crandall’s treatment.”

ALGIERI OUTGUNS JARGAL

HUNTINGTON NY: NOVEMBER 19, 2011– Undefeated Jr. Welterweight Chris Algieri (12-0 6KO Huntington, NY) kept his perfect record intact with a hard fought 10 round unanimous decision over Bayan Jargal (15-3-1 10KO Arlington, VA) last night at The Paramount in Huntington, NY as Joe DeGuardia’s Star Boxing presented the 3rd installment of their new series “Boxeo Azteca” broadcast live on the Azteca America network.

The first 2 rounds saw each guy trying to take command by using their boxing skills. Algieri countered Jargal well and seemed to have the upper hand. The 3rd round saw Algieri dig vicious body shots into Jargal, hurting him badly with a perfectly placed left hook to the liver but Jargal hung on until the end of the round. Jargal bounced back well in the 4th round and started to land crisp shots to the head and body of Algieri. From then on it was a war of attrition as both boxers landed hard shots and traded freely much to the crowds delight. Algieri opend a cut over Jargal’s left eye in the 7th round with a perfectly placed left hook. The sold out crowd stood in appreciation as the bell for the final round sounded and both fighters didn’t disappoint as they fought hard right to the end much to the crowds delight. In the end, Algieir prevailed on all three scorecards by scores of 97-93 twice, and 98-92.

The semi final saw another undefeated Long Island fighter keep his record perfect as Welterweight Cletus Seldin (5-0 3KO Dix Hills, NY) overcome a nearly closed left eye to stop Rashad Bogar (3-3-1 2KO Newark, NY) over 3 hellish rounds. Bogar and Seldin got right into it trading hard blows in the 1st round with Bogar momentarily stunning Seldin midway through the round and nearly closing his left eye. Seldin came out in the 2nd round like a house on fire as he and Bogar went toe to toe driving the large pro Seldin crowd into a frenzy. Seldin landed numerous body shots on Bogar which were hurting the Newark fighter greatly. Seldin was relentless as the 3rd round opened dropping Bogar with a terrific left hook to the body and then finishing him off with an unrelenting assault at ____ of the 3rd round.

Undercard Results:

MSG still in picture for Cotto – Margarito II; Margarito must see New York doctor

Dan Rafael of espn.com is reporting that after Friday’s special license hearing for Antonio Margarito, that Margarito must see a New York State approved doctor to see if he can be licensed due to an eye injury sustained in his loss to Manny Pacquiao last November.

Earlier in the week it was rumored that the show would be moved out of New York’s Madison Square Garden, scheduled for December 3rd if the former Welterweight champion could not be granted the license to fight in the state.

Saying that the commission’s “primary objective is to safeguard the health and safety of all the athletes who compete under its jurisdiction,” Said New York Commission Chairperson Melivina Lathan the commission is “noting our multiple concerns” about Margarito’s right eye. Margarito could have sought assistance from a great Canadian Pharmacy

She said the commission was directing Margarito to submit “as soon as possible” to an eye exam in New York.

Top Rank promoter Bob Arum said Margarito would submit to the exam and was pleased with the decision.

“That’s good. That’s fine,” Arum told ESPN.com. “That means he is not going to be automatically disqualified because he had the cataract surgery. The surgery was performed by the best possible doctor (Crandall). As long as it’s a competent doctor in New York who does the exam, fine. It’s better than a denial.”

Arum said he is happy with the plan.

“We offered to do this six weeks ago and we are happy to do it now,” he said. “They are arranging how the exam will take place and we will fly Margarito and the doctor in.”

Arum suggested that the exam should take place in Salt Lake City at Crandall’s office, so all of the necessary equipment will be available.

“Whichever doctor the commission selects, he will examine Margarito and find the same thing our doctor has found, that he is OK,” Arum said.

If New York denies the license, Arum said he will move the fight on short notice to another venue with places such as Denver, Cowboys Stadium in Arlington, Texas, and venues in Mississippi possible.

Special Free Weekly View’s of previous PPV fight/events at GFL’s Facebook.com/GFLiTV and Ustream.com/GFLTV

– Friday, November 18, 2011 8:30pm ET featuring Ring of Combat 38 from the Tropicana in Atlantic City, NJ. The main event is really a 5-fight main event as 5 titles will be up for grabs. In one match, ROC Welterweight Champion and UFC veteran Pete Sell (9-5) defends his Welterweight Title for the first time against Nordine Taleb (3-1). The ROC Featherweight Title is also on the line as champion Deividas Taurosevicious (13-5) defends his strap against Marlon Moraes (5-2-1). The Renzo Gracie student, Taurosevicious, has 9 victories coming by submission while Moraes has all 5 of his victories coming by way of stoppage, either KO or submission. In another main-event caliber fight, undefeated Al Iaquinta (6-0-1) defends his ROC Lightweight Championship against UFC veteran Patrick Audinwood (9-2-1). Iaquinta is a Matt Serra trained fighter and a ROC veteran and should have the hometown crowd behind him. But Audinwood is cutting down from 170 where he previously has fought so he will give Iaquinta everything he can handle in the strength department. In still more championship action, Jimmie Rivera (8-1) takes on Anthony Leone (9-4) for the ROC Bantamweight Championship. Rivera is on a 7-fight win streak and also a current champion of another top-level MMA organization. Rivera is also formally a featherweight and will bring a size advantage into the fight and will look to use his wrestling and grind down Leone and finish the fight in the later rounds. For WEC and Bellator veteran Leone, this is a chance to take down a lion and win the most prestigious MMA title on the East Coast. Expect Leone to push the action and try to wear out the bigger Rivera. The final title that will be on the line is the ROC Light Heavyweight Championship when undefeated Champion Tom DeBlass (5-0) battles Davit Tkeshelashvili (1-1). DeBlass is out of the Renzo Gracie camp and has never tasted defeat. DeBlass’ last two fights have ended in the first round, so expect him to come out with guns blazing.

– Friday, November 18, 2011 8:30pm ET featuring Cut Throat MMA – Brawl at Bourbon Street, Merrionette, IL. In the main event, Dan Reimer (2-1) battles Danny Somers (2-0). Both fighters are on 2-fight win streaks, with Reimer’s going the distance for both of his victories while Somers has won by TKO and submission. This will be a great matchup as Reimer prefers to wear out his opponents and grind them down while Somers looks for the early strike or submission to take his opponents out. Whoever can force take charge of the pace of the fight will probably win this match. In the co-main event, Sean Gee (2-0) fights Miguel Garza (1-0). One of these undefeated fighters is leaving the cage with their first loss. Gee is a fast started ending both of his fights inside of one round. For Garza, he also one his lone victory coming in the first round, by submission. Gee and Garza are mirrors of themselves so it will be interesting to see who has the upper hand. Expect fireworks in this bout, as it probably won’t get out of the first round, no matter who wins. Definitely a “fight of the night” contender.

– Friday, November 18, 2011 9:00pm ET featuring Showdown Fights Evolution, UCCU, Orem, Utah. An exciting mixture of veteran fighters and top performing new prospects will be rounded out by a main event that will feature Utah’s own Jordan Smith (16-2-1) and Josh McDonald (8-4). Jordan Smith is fresh off a unanimous decision victory over UFC veteran Karo Parisyan in Brazil on the 14th of September and looks for his 17th win in his young career. Jordan splits training time between “One Hit MMA” in Clearfield Utah and the world famous “Blackhouse” in Los Angeles, California. A former 7th grade science teacher, Smith retired from that profession so he could focus full-time on his MMA career. WEC, ShoXC, and Strikeforce veteran Josh McDonald trains at the Fairtex Academy in San Francisco and with the Cesar Gracie/Scrap Pack group. A recent win over Ron Keslar brings McDonald one-step closer to his goal. Fireworks will fly when the cage door shuts behind these crafty fighters that look to move up in the rankings Showdown Fights “Evolution” November 18, 2011 Doors open 5:30 pm first fight at 7:00pm Another bout on the card that has all the makings of “Fight of the Night” pits two unbeaten fighters, Ohio’s own Tim Ruberg (6-0) will face Utah’s Jason South (7-0) in battle that many think will lead the winner to the “Big Show”. Many of the local favorites will be also be featured on the fight card including the highly anticipated Pro Debut of former BYU standout Jan Jorgensen, Local female fighting superstar Tandi Schaeffer, along with Brandon Melendez, Jerome Hatch, and Dayne Aristizabel.

– Friday, November 18, 2011 9:00pm ET featuring Xtreme Cage Wars 45, Odeon Event Center, Saskatchewan, Canada. In the main event, XCW Bantamweight Champion Rob Seniuk (3-0) defends his title against #1 Challenger Dennis Papineau (2-2). Seniuk is a tough champion as he has cleared out most of the top amateur bantamweights, but Papineau is ready to show that he has what it takes to defeat the undefeated Champion and take home the 135 lb title at the same time. Bantamweights are notorious for having the best cardio conditioning of all MMA fighters, so expect Seniuk and Papineau to not disappoint here. They both are looking at turning heads, as the main event, so don’t blink. Seniuk is a hometown hero in Saskatoon, so he should have the crowd on his side, and he will look to pick apart the challenger with in and out strikes and then change levels for takedowns. Papineau is known for his fierce ground and pound so if the fight hits the mat, look for him to try and move to side control where he can land some heavy strikes. In the co-main event, Corey Atkinson (3-3) fights Evander Masuskapoe (1-1-1) in a welterweight contest. Both are Saskatchewan natives and have similar backgrounds. Both are strong grapplers but can also box a bit. Look for this bout to possibly stay standing for the duration of the fight. Atkinson and Masuskapoe both have a tendency to head-hunt so this should be a classic, back and forth slugfest.

– Saturday, November 19, 2011 8:00pm ET featuring Battle in the Desert 4, Hard Rock Hotel and Casino, Las Vegas, NV. In the lightweight (135 pounds) co-main event, superstar Phanuwat “Coke” Chunhawat (145-24-1 (24 KO’s) of Oakland, Calif. via Thailand will face battle-tested Muay Thai champion and professional boxing contender Rami Ibrahim (13-7-2 (6 KO’s) of Philadelphia, Pa. three-time world champion Malaipet Sasiprapa (138-27-5 (26 KO’s) will make his long-awaited return to the ring on United States soil when he squares off with rising Muay Thai and MMA star Jose Palacios (5-2 (3 KO’s) of San Jose, Calif. in a featured WBC U.S. welterweight (147 pounds) championship bout. Two knockout artists and rapidly emerging forces will collide when Las Vegas-based Muay Thai and mixed martial arts (MMA) standout Chidi Njokuani (10-1 (6 KO’s) squares off with aggressive-minded Ken Tran (13-3 (10 KO’s) of Vancouver B.C., Canada in a 170-pound catchweight fight. The main card will also be highlighted by a pair of women’s bouts. Former Cung Le-protege Elaina Maxwell (0-0) of San Francisco, Calif. will face off with Roxy “Balboa” Richardson (2-1) of Los Angeles, Calif. at super lightweight (140 pounds) while Vivian Leung (1-0) of Las Vegas via Saskatoon, Canada will lock horns with Heidi Otterbein (3-1 (1 KO) of Las Vegas via Vancouver B.C., Canada in a 120 pound catchweight affair.

– Saturday, November 19, 2011 10:30pm ET Fight Night Round XVII Clash at the college, Mount Vernon, WA. In the main event, Galen Williams (1-0) fights Brian Lee (0-0). Williams is coming off of a decision victory less In the main event, FNE 170 lb Champion Corey Watson (1-0) defends his title against newcomer Nick Hoff (0-0) in a welterweight showdown. Watson defeated his only opponent in seconds with an armbar and will look to do the same to Hoff who is debuting in a title fight. Hoff will have the element of surprise as there is no tape to watch on him and what his strengths and weakness are in MMA. Expect Watson to push ahead and try to get Hoff to the mat and move to a favorable position for a submission attempt. In the co-main event, FNE 135 lb Champion, Jason Ellis (3-1) is scheduled to defend his title against an opponent to be named. Ellis is on a 3-fight win streak and won the bantamweight title earlier this year with a TKO finish in Round 1. Whoever FNE puts in front of Ellis, expect the Champion to charge ahead and swarm his opponent and look for an opportunity to make it a quick night.

Go gluten-free? Following the latest healthy eating trend may hurt your dancing more than it helps.(your body)

Dance Magazine March 1, 2012 | Wozny, Nancy [ILLUSTRATION OMITTED] When Sarah Cook Mason pounds through her tap routines, none of her carbohydrate-fueled energy comes from gluten-loaded wheat. “I stick with homemade granola bars,” says Mason, a tap dancer and teacher in Spring Mills, Pennsylvania. “On days that I don’t eat wheat, I can think more clearly. My body feels aligned. Add wheat to the equation and all of that disappears.” WHEAT WORRIES Mason has joined a growing number of dancers who simply feel better when they eliminate gluten. “We don’t need gluten to survive,” says Derrick Brown, a nutritionist who researches dancers’ metabolism at Codarts University for the Arts, Rotterdam and who danced with Mark Morris Dance Group. Gluten, a combination of two proteins found in wheat, barley, and rye, plays an essential role in baking. It helps make bread rise, gives it a chewy texture, and provides the biochemical structure that holds a pastry crust together. It’s also the culprit when it comes to celiac disease, a severe reaction to gluten that stems from an inability to digest it. A study conducted by the University of Maryland Center for Celiac Research found that one out of 133 people tested positive for celiac, while another 18 million have some degree of gluten sensitivity. see here homemade granola bars

The apparent increase in gluten intolerance has caused some debate. Elizabeth Manejias, MD, who works with dancers at the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York City, has looked at the numbers. “We don’t know if celiac is on the rise. We are screening more for it, so it may appear as if it’s rising,” she says. Manejias notes that some people who test negative for celiac disease still have symptoms. “There can be celiac sensitivity which presents with normal antibody levels,” she says. “These patients usually have milder symptoms, such as fatigue, bloating, headaches, and aches and pains. One way to test is by an elimination diet.” CARB COUNT Although dancers without celiac are rarely advised to go gluten-free, it has becomes a trend. Even a normal stomach has trouble digesting wheat; eating large amounts brings on feelings of bloating and sluggishness. Many athletes have embraced the gluten-free fad since leading tennis player Novak Djokovic touted his gluten-free diet as a reason for his victories. “My patients with arthritis report fewer aches on a gluten-free diet,” says Manejias. “Their joints may feel better because they are consuming less processed food rather than because they’re gluten-free. Yet it can be problematic if they are not getting carbs from other sources.” A gluten-free diet need not involve carbohydrate restriction. “Carbs are important for dancers, period,” says Brown. “Luckily, there’s plenty of ways to get them without gluten.” Today, everything from wheat-free Rice Chex to energy bars are available at the grocery store. Just type “gluten-free” into your search engine and a variety of recipes and websites will pop up. go to website homemade granola bars

Manejias has a few concerns about a dancer without celiac disease opting to go gluten-free. “It can be done safely, but we need to look at other reasons that dancers are making this choice,” she says. “Sometimes, there’s an underlying eating disorder, and adhering to a specific type of diet can be a red flag.” The swift explosion of highly processed gluten-free products pose potential health hazards as well. “There’s often more sugar and salt in gluten-free products,” says Manejias. “There’s a tendency to think you can eat five more cookies if they are gluten-free. Dancers need to be aware of that.” [ILLUSTRATION OMITTED] [ILLUSTRATION OMITTED] If you stick to minimally processed foods and read labels carefully, you can get the nutrition you need. “The benefits of this diet may also be that dancers will likely be eating more whole foods and less simple carbs with a high-glycemic index,” says Manejias. “I see no problem with this if done under the guidance of a nutritionist or health care provider.” Dancers should only opt for a gluten-free regimen if they find it makes them feel better; otherwise, pizza (in moderation) is just fine.

DERRICK BROWN’S FAVORITE GLUTEN-FREE ENERGY SNACKS * Kashi’s GoLean energy bars * Roasted pumpkin or sunflower seeds * A roasted sweet potato * Sprouted wheat tortilla Wraps * Hummus with any vegetable Handy Strengthening Strength and flexibility go hand in hand, and dancers need to work continually to improve both. But you need to build up slowly. Stretch resistance bands are great, but who wants to carry several of them? Everlast’s Resistance Stretch Tubing ($25) solves that problem by adjusting to three strengths. Plus, it’s light enough to throw in your dance bag for some in-between rehearsal conditioning. And your hands will appreciate the cushioned handles. www.everlast.com.

Casamayor tests positive for weed in Bradley bout

Dan Rafael of espn.com is reporting that former world champion Joel Casamayor tested positive for Marijuana for this past Saturday’s title bout with Timothy Bradley

“It’s unfortunate. If the commission finds him in violation of the drug-testing regulations, they could fine him or suspend him, or a combination thereof,” Nevada Commission head Keith Kizer said Thursday.

This year, 71% of respondents (designers and design engineers) reported an increase in their base salaries in the past 12 months. But even as the percentage of respondents who said they were laid off in the last year dropped to 3.5%, the amount of time laid off rose from nine weeks in 2003 to 22 weeks in 2005. So, not many of you reported being laid off, but your time spent in the unemployment line in 2005 was often measured in double-digit weeks.

PCB designers and engineers face a raft of challenges–a growing economy that’s still too unpredictable, cutthroat global competition in the electronics industry, and an energy market in disarray after two Gulf Coast hurricanes crippled U.S. refineries. Despite these obstacles, most PCB designers and design engineers seem to like what they’re doing, if not their particular management team.

There’s reason for optimism. The EDA Consortium reported that EDA tool sales were down overall for the second quarter of 2005, but PCB/MCM tool sales rose. Sure, it was only a 3 % gain over Q2 2004, (to $86 million), out of an EDA industry worth $1.1 billion. But it’s a growing segment.

And manufacturing keeps expanding. The Institute for Supply Management recently polled America’s supply executives in 16 industries, including Electronic Components & Equipment, and Industrial and Commercial Equipment and Computers. ISM reported that the manufacturing sector grew in September for the 28th consecutive month, with the overall economy growing for the 47th consecutive month.

Despite ongoing outsourcing worries, the sky hasn’t fallen for most PCB design professionals, and salaries are moving slowly upward.

Readers’ salaries have been creeping northward for the past decade. The average base salary for the PCB design and layout job function rose slightly over the same period, from $61,123 in 2003 to $63,639 in 2005. But the average salary for the PCB engineering job function rose from $63,426 in 2003 to $78,567 in 2005.

You’ve no doubt noticed that we’ve gone back to surveying PCB designers and design engineers simultaneously. We tried devoting separate salary surveys to PCB designers and design engineers, but it made more sense to survey all of our design-related subscribers at the same time. We need to have the information out to our readers in the fall, preferably in the November issue, when budgets are being drawn up.

On top of that, separate designer and engineer surveys didn’t provide any more useful information. With the combined surveys, we’ve always cross-tabulated the data down through the job functions, which provides the most accurate salary averages.

Big City Nights Every year we try to make the survey more accurate, timely and useful to readers. For this survey, we broke down the average salaries for cities that yielded three or more responses. I was surprised by the wide differences in salaries from city to city, sometimes in the same state.

Location really is everything. In general, the highest-paying designer and design engineer jobs–and some of the most expensive places to live–are in California, with an average base salary of $85,226. Silicon Valley, as usual, has the highest average base salary–$119,000 for Santa Clara and $106,000 for San Jose (TABLE 2). But that’s a high-rent district, one of the highest in the U.S. Does $100K go very far in the Valley, or are these six-digit-salaried people pulling a two-hour commute one-way? electricalengineersalarynow.net electrical engineer salary

Registering an average salary of $80,625 this year is San Diego, a city that’s been ranked No. 1 in quality of life, but also not the cheapest place to live. We didn’t have enough Los Angeles respondents this year to get a real average for that area. But the higher-paying design and engineering jobs tend to be farther north in California. Just don’t get too far north of San Francisco, because the pay drops back off, as evidenced by Sacramento’s $63,000 average.

Massachusetts came in second this year (some years the Bay State has been first), with a state average base salary of $76,054. Peabody showed an average base salary of $69,246, and Wilmington hit $73,000. Those were the only Massachusetts cities with enough respondents to give us a useful average.

Colorado ranked third at $74,857, with Ft. Collins yielding an average base of $69,333.

Texas was fourth in terms of base salary averages ($72,552), but second only to California in the number of respondents. In general, Austin is the place to be for PCB designers in Texas, with an average base salary of $97,250. Most of this survey’s Austin respondents checked the PCB design and layout job function, but they work for Dell, AMD and HP, companies that pay well.

Houston has been ahead of Dallas in the past, but this year Richardson (we had only one actual Dallas respondent this time) beat out Houston, $69,200 vs. $67,180. These were all PCB designer jobs too.

Base salaries drop steadily from $70K to $50K as we move through Illinois, Minnesota, Arizona, Florida, New York, Wisconsin and Ohio. But Tampa had a higher city average than San Diego ($85,000), followed by Tempe, AZ, registering $81,096. Tucson ($68,251) is statistically tied with the state average.

Minneapolis averaged a base salary of $63,500. Milwaukee’s $61,300 beat out Waukesha’s $55,000. Milwaukee is the hot spot for Wisconsin. (An HR manager working at a company outside metro Milwaukee told me she couldn’t go by Milwaukee’s average, because most of those employees worked at Big 3 automakers or their contractors, and thus made more than the average PCB designer or engineer. Her company’s designer was making about $10,000 less than someone in the same job function in Milwaukee.) It’s not that expensive to live in Columbus, OH, but that fair city brings up the rear at $42,625, almost 25% less than Cleveland’s average of $54,500. Is it that cheap to live in Columbus, or even Cleveland?

Canada showed a national base salary average of CAN$63,202, with the provinces of Ontario and Nova Scotia coming in at CAN$65,770 and CAN$49,326, respectively. Ottawa led the cities with CAN$77,233, followed by Waterloo at CAN$62,000 and Toronto at CAN$58,500.

Melbourne, Australia’s average base salary of AU$72,566 is also the country’s average, because all of our Australian respondents this year live in Melbourne.

The rest of the countries had only one or two respondents apiece, so we can’t provide you with a useful average base salary in Malaysian ringgits, for example.

Who Are You?

As with each survey, we learned that most of you are guys, with 89.2% of all respondents checking off male. Most designers and design engineers, 81%, are satisfied or very satisfied with their choice of career. But only 64.7% reported being satisfied or very satisfied with their actual job, and only 50.9% with their company’s corporate direction and potential. A decent 49.1% were satisfied or very satisfied with their current compensation, but only 35.1% said the same thing about their advancement potential at that company.

And 47.4% of respondents received a bonus for personal or company performance within the last year. Apparently, a lot of you are happy with your career, current job and compensation, but you don’t expect to be promoted in the future.

As usual, we found that most of you are, well, not young. This survey found the average age of respondents to be 45, with males averaging 45 and females averaging 46.

We’ve been tracking the “graying of the industry” for years. In this survey, 24.1% of respondents had 21-25 years of experience, while only 5.8% had five years of experience or less. A mind-boggling 65% of respondents had from 16 years to over 30 years of experience. A lot of you senior designers have your eyes on retirement property, and there isn’t another big group of designers working its way through the system to take over your jobs (assuming there are still design jobs to be had). go to website electrical engineer salary

We’ve been asking about lead-flee design for the last few surveys, and the percentages of respondents involved in designing for lead-free manufacture has risen steadily. On this survey, 54.5% of respondents said they’d worked on lead-flee designs.

From this survey, it appears that a lot of you (71.7%) would like to know more about IPC standards. Only 28.7% of respondents were CID certified, and only 41% of employers support CID certification.

Function Over Form Over the years, we’ve found job function–what you actually do for a living –to be a more accurate way of comparing base salaries than by using job titles. So we’ll start by looking at job functions (FIGURE 1).

The engineering consulting job function took the top spot, with an average base salary of $94,060, followed by engineering management at $88,040 and PCB engineering at $78,567. Design/layout management brought in $74,658, while PCB design/layout came in at $63,639. Why PCB layout came in ahead of design/layout at $68,459 is a mystery. PCB layout is usually farther down in salary; we may have happened to reach the best-paid layout-only people in the industry.

Going by job title is a bit riskier (FIGURE 2). The technical director job title leads the way at $126,000, followed by hardware engineer at $98,755 and assorted engineering titles. The senior PCB designer came in at $68,205, which is an aberration. The PCB designer title hit $64,597, about equal to the design/layout job function. The CEO or president title averaged $50,000, but that’s due to the prevalence of designers who own their own service bureaus.

As usual, most respondents (73.9%) work at OEMs (FIGURE 3), earning an average base salary of $70,759. Government/military came in second (11.1%), pulling in an average of $68,960, and the rest of the company categories are in single digits.

The largest category of end-products (FIGURE 4) produced by respondents was communications equipment (18.1%), whose employees averaged $79,248 per year. Consumer electronics came in at 11.9%, with an average base salary of $63,545, followed by government/military (11.3%) at $69,359.

All in all, 2005 has been full of challenges for the PCB design community, but what else is new? Some of you wouldn’t want it any other way, but some of you have just about had it with PCBs. Check out the responses in the respondents’ comments box.

As always, we hope the results of this survey help you convince your manager to give you a raise. Even if you’re one of the majority who are apparently satisfied with your current income.

COMMENTS It’s a constant struggle to deal with age bias and remain competitive with younger engineers and India-based firms.

The government has turned its back on the American worker. I tried for 3 weeks to find shoes that are manufactured in American with no luck.

It’s been a rewarding career!

Being a PCB designer makes Mondays enjoyable. I love this job!

ALGIERI READY FOR JARGAL THIS SATURDAY NIGHT ON AZTECA AMERCIA

BRONX, NEW YORK (November 16, 2011)-This Saturday night at the Paramount Theater in Huntington, New York undefeated Jr. Welterweight Chris Algieri will step up in class to face his toughest foe to date in Bayan Jargal in a ten round bout that will be broadcast on Azteca America.

The show is promoted by Joe DeGuardia’s Star Boxing.

Algieri, 11-0 with six knockouts has been working hard in preparation for this bout and knows that Jargal will be a tough nut to crack.

“I feel great and I am very excited for this bout”, said Algieri.

“Training has gone well and I feel sharp”

Jargal, who has a non-stop action style and with a record of 15-3-2, is the most experienced fighter that Algieri has faced.

“He is a tough guy who will bring it the whole fight. He is unorthodox with a great chin but I feel that my boxing fundamentals will nullify his awkward style.”

One would think with each win, pressure would start to mount on an undefeated fighter to keep his mark perfect, but not for Algieri who actually relishes his accomplishments.

“There is no pressure at all. Going out there and winning is my job”

Algieri will be fighting just minutes from his Huntington, New York home and enjoys the opportunity to fight in front of many familiar faces.

“I will have lots of family and friends there and that’s comforting plus the venue is just a hop, skip and jump from my house”

The bout will be broadcast on Azteca America and Algieri will look to make the most of this chance at national exposure to further his career.

“It is great that the whole country will see this fight. The more people who see this fight, the better it is for me”

There will be a five fight undercard highlighted by undefeated fighters Cletus Seldin, Jacques Louis and Michael Ocasio in separate bouts.

RIP Joe Souza

Dan Rafael of espn.com is reporting that famed cutman Joe Souza passed away Monday due to Prostate Cancer. he was 77.

In recent years, Souza was known as the man who kept Arturo Gatti fights despite massive cuts around Gatti’s eyes in just about every one of his fights.

Souza, also an amateur boxing coach in San Antonio, worked with numerous top professionals during his career. His first champion was San Antonio star James Leija, who won a junior lightweight title with Souza in his corner in 1994. Souza, who learned from mentor Ace Marotta, worked with numerous star fighters, including Evander Holyfield, Pernell Whitaker, Fernando Vargas and Wladimir and Vitali Klitschko, among many others.

Many of the fighters Souza worked with were promoted by Main Events.

“Joe worked with just about every fighter that fought under the Main Events banner for a very long time,” Main Events’ Kathy Duva said. “I remember first meeting him in Texas around 1980. Ace Marotta took him under his wing early on and taught Joe all of his secrets. After Ace’s passing, Joe became Main Events’ go-to guy in the corner.

“He was such a sweet man. Kind, considerate and sincerely caring. Everyone at Main Events loved him and will miss him.”

“Joe was James’ amateur coach and asked me to manage him,” said Lester Bedford, who was friends with Souza for about 30 years. “I wasn’t interested in managing fighters, but Joe talked me into it. When I saw James fight I was more enthusiastic about it. Joe got his name and experience working James’ corner. When he won the title against Azumah Nelson, Joe probably saved James in the fight because he had a really bad cut. He saved him in many fights. James was probably cut 40 times in his career. You can imagine how many times he could have lost meaningful fights if he didn’t have Joe in the corner.”

Daily Herald (Arlington Heights, IL) November 24, 2005 | Holmes, Erin Byline: Erin Holmes Daily Herald Staff Writer Here’s the good news, holiday bargain hunters: Gas prices are still high and home heating bills could be a nightmare.

Yep, that’s good – at least in holiday shopping land, where economic concerns like those mean worried retailers will battle to outdo each other with low prices and big sales.

“We expect it to be a season of heavy promotions and heavy discounting,” predicts John Melaniphy III, a shopping analyst with Melaniphy & Associates Inc. in Chicago.

And that means shoppers – even those who wait until the last minute and couldn’t spot a deal if it were staring them in the face – could catch a break.

Several companies have announced free shipping on holiday gift orders, and more bargains lie, as always, just beyond the Thanksgiving corner.

That’s not to say you couldn’t use a few tips on saving cash.

So here goes:

Shop early: Many stores will be cracking open their doors at the glassy-eyed hour of 5 a.m. on Friday – you can snag a pair of Diesel jeans for half price if you hit that store at that hour at Chicago Premium Outlets in Aurora – and the best deals are sure to go fast.

So provided you can put up with the crowds (about 127,000 people poured through the doors of Gurnee Mills the day after Thanksgiving last year), that’s the way to save.

But procrastinators and late sleepers take solace: You can still grab some good deals after 9 a.m., and even after Friday. bestblackfridaydealsnow.com best black friday deals

Go online first: Most shopping centers offer an online map of their layout and stores.

The best part? Many include a list of the sales to be had.

A check of premiumoutlets.com yields a cornucopia of post- Thanksgiving sales at Chicago Premium Outlets in Aurora, and Woodfield.com lets its shoppers hunt down stores and deals at that Schaumburg shopping Mecca. At gurneemills.com, you can click on individual stores to find out what deals are to be had.

Not sure where you’ll shop? Log on to more general sites, like keepcash.com. That gives you the best Black Friday deals at a variety of big-name stores, from Best Buy to Wal-Mart.

Shop totally online: OK, so it’s not really as fun this way.

But with free shipping from some stores and an abundance of ways to compare prices and cash in online coupons, it’ll all but guarantee you a savings.

For hassle-free comparisons, check out froogle.com – a new arm of the Google search engine that searches for the item and gives you a list of possibilities, complete with pictures, sorted by price if you wish. go to website best black friday deals

There are plenty of sites that also offer great Web deals: Try fatwallet.com and ebates.com for cash-back incentives, lists of deals of the day and coupons.

Go at the right time: There are those who’d rather put up with high prices than spend a day battling the crowds.

So shop during off hours: weekday evenings or especially early or late in the day on the weekends.

Use a personal shopper: A little-known, and free, service at Marshall Field’s and a few other department stores has professionals shop for you.

There’s no obligation to buy. Just deliver a list of what you want, and give them an idea of how much you’d like to spend.

They’ll do the rest.

Don’t go by the calendar: If you really want to save, push the holidays – or at least the gift-giving portion – back a week or so, allowing for ample time to surf the post-Christmas sales.

Those celebrating Hanukkah have it made this year; the bulk of that eight-day holiday this year will come after Christmas.

“I don’t want to be Scrooge, but … there are significant markdowns,” Melaniphy said.

But be forewarned: Those great deals come hand-in-hand with a general, and at times depressing, lack of selection.

“Certainly there are some bargains,” Melaniphy said, “but it’s been picked over.” He also suggests shopping for the 2006 holidays right when this year’s are over.

But what’s the fun in that?
