THERE WILL BE FIREWORKS IN NOVEMBER WHEN JUNIOR MIDDLEWEIGHT STARS ALFREDO “PERRO” ANGULO & JAMES “MANDINGO WARRIOR” KIRKLAND FACE OFF IN CANCUN, MEXICO

LOS ANGELES, September 29 – Known for its dazzling beaches and as a vacation destination for millions, Cancun, Mexico will be turned into a fight town on Saturday, November 5, when Golden Boy Promotions and Periodico QueQui (Pepe Gomez) will bring one of the most anticipated bouts in recent years to the Cancun Center, where junior middleweight sluggers Alfredo “Perro” Angulo and James “Mandingo Warrior” Kirkland will engage in what is already anticipated to be a 2011 Fight of the Year candidate live on HBO’s Boxing After Dark. Also on tap for this boxing extravaganza is a middleweight clash between two fighters battling for a spot in the top ten, undefeated rising star Peter “Kid Chocolate” Quillin and the always tough contender Craig McEwan.

“This is a fight that fans have been looking forward to for years and now we are finally going to see Angulo vs. Kirkland, and the word ‘explosive’ won’t do it justice,” said Richard Schaefer, CEO of Golden Boy Promotions. “There’s no mystery as to what either fighter wants to do on November 5. James and Alfredo are both going to be looking for the knockout and I can’t wait to see it.”

“This is the kind of fight boxing needs and I respect James Kirkland for stepping up and taking it,” said Angulo. “We’re not going to dance or hug in there on November 5th; we’re going to fight, and I can’t wait.”

“Angulo has been on my radar for a long time and I’m happy that we’re finally going to get a chance to fight each other,” said Kirkland. “He’s a good fighter, I like his style and I know we’re going to make for a great fight.”

“I’m very excited and blessed to have this opportunity,” said Quillin. “I know Craig is a solid fighter with tons of fight in him because we used to train together in the same gym, but he has to prove that he has what it takes to give me my first loss. He has tons of heart, but so do I, and if he wants to make a good fight, then he can meet me right in the middle of the ring on November 5th.”

“I don’t think I can just beat Quillin, I know I’m going to knock him out,” McEwan said.

Angulo vs. Kirkland, a 12 round junior middleweight bout and Quillin vs. McEwan, a 10-round middleweight fight are presented by Golden Boy Promotions and Periodico QueQui (Pepe Gomez) and sponsored by Cerveza Tecate. The HBO Boxing After Dark broadcast will air at 10:15pm ET/PT.

While James Kirkland can knock you out with a single blow, Mexicali’s Alfredo “Perro” Angulo (20-1, 17 KO’s) is a punishing puncher who can make you beg for a one punch knockout. A professional since 2005, Angulo became a fan favorite for his aggressive style while he piled up win after win, with his only loss coming via decision to Kermit Cintron in 2009. The winner of five in a row since then, including victories over Harry Joe Yorgey, Joel Julio and Joachim Alcine, Angulo returned from a year long layoff in August with a first round knockout over Joseph Gomez. He will look to make a big statement against the concussive punching Kirkland.

One of the hardest punchers in boxing today, James “Mandingo Warrior” Kirkland (29-1, 26 KO’s) has been responsible for some of the most devastating knockouts seen in recent years. A longtime junior middleweight contender who owns victories over Eromosele Albert, Ricardo Cortes, Brian Vera and Joel Julio, the 27-year-old southpaw from Austin, Texas returned to the ring in 2011 after two years away, and he has won four of five bouts, with all four victories coming by knockout in two rounds or less.

Undefeated as a professional, Peter “Kid Chocolate” Quillin (25-0, 19 KO’s) has become a much avoided contender in the middleweight division in the past year. That’s not a shock considering his series of crushing knockout wins over Dennis Sharpe, Jesse Brinkley, and Jason LeHoullier in 2011. Now ready to take the next step in his career, the popular 28-year-old will look to take his career to the next level with a win over McEwanin his HBO Boxing After Dark debut.

Also looking to make a big impression on fight fans this November is Scotland native Craig McEwan (19-1, 10 KO’s). Coming off of the first loss of his professional career, which was a thrilling 10 round battle with Andy Lee in March, the 29-year-old southpaw knows that the only way to erase the sour taste of defeat is by replacing it with a big win. In his fight against Peter Quillin, he has the opportunity to take out a top level opponent and get back in the victory circle in front of a worldwide television audience.

On Oct 7th Chicago Gets a Taste Of Hollywood–WATCH FIGHT CARD LIVE ON GFL

CLICK TO ORDER THE FIGHT CARD
It’s not all red carpets and flashing lights for one particular Chicago up-n coming fighter simply known as “Hollywood”, unlike the normal Hollywood star this young man likes to get his hands dirty like the rest of us! However, unlike the rest of us, he likes to use his hands to beat and destroy all competition he faces.

Undefeated super middleweight Mike “Hollywood” Jimenez (4-0 3KO’s) is young, heavy handed and steps in the ring with “Swagger” due to his overwhelming confidence and his aggressive fighting style. One thing that is clear is that Jimenez wants to follow in the footsteps of other Chicago fight club fighters such as his good friends Donovan George and “King” David Estrada; Jimenez wants to fight his way to the top of his division. Jimenez believes the right people surround him and that would help catapult him in the sport known as the sweet science. “I greatly appreciate what everyone has done for me thus far, I could not have been here without Pete George, he has brought me a long way and taught me a lot, I am very thankful for having him in my corner.”-Said Jimenez.

On June 19th 2010 Jimenez fought his first professional boxing bout that sent shockwaves throughout the city of Chicago. Jimenez destroyed his opponent in the very first round winning the contest via TKO. Jimenez stayed very active fighting in 2010 fighting two more times before 2010 came to an end. On March 25th 2011 Jimenez faced a tough rugged fighter in Cameron Allen and once again Jimenez walked away victorious but not by knockout instead he won by a unanimous decision. What many fans witnessed was a slugfest between the two fighters, what many fans did not know was that Jimenez was fighting injured. Not wanting to let his fans or the city of Chicago down, he decided to fight despite the pain that was following him weeks before the fight as he prepared for the bout.

After his victory over Allen, the celebration was cut short as Jimenez was informed by doctors that the pain Jimenez was experiencing before the fight were cause by loose bodies which are basically small bone chips, one of those bone chips were the size of a casino poker chip. Not only bone spurs needed to be shaven down but that poker sized bone chip needed to be removed and that required doctors to make a 2inch incision to remove the bone chip. This was not what Jimenez was hoping for, but knew the time was something his body needed to fully heal.

Jimenez sidelined with the injury was obviously depressed, even though he was not seen fighting, he was seen constantly supporting his friends by attending both amateur and professional boxing cards. Jimenez loved to sit and be a spectator but the more he watched punches being thrown the quicker he was missing the sport.

After the cast was removed from his arm Jimenez decided to have two training camps one being in Medellin, Colombia at the Knock Out Box Gym and the other in “The Windy City” training at Chicago Fight Club. In Colombia, Jimenez was able to work with the likes of Felipe Novoa, Newton Villareal just to name a few. “The best thing about my trip to Colombia was seeing my father”- said the heavy-handed fighter. In Chicago he was back to sparring with the likes of number #4 ranked Donovan “Da Bomb” George, welterweight contender “King” David Estrada, Chicago Iconic ring warrior Angel “El Toro” Hernandez and countless others.

Feeling much better Jimenez wanted to get back in the ring and Cynthia Tolaymat owner of CFC Promotions LLC could not have been happier. “Hollywood brings a fan base unlike any other, his fans come in and chant “Hollywood, Hollywood”, very loud and very exciting –said Tolaymat. “I am pleased to see Jimenez healthy, the fans can expect an exciting bout on October 7th.”

Serving as the Main Event on “Chicago Fight Night III” will be Chicago’s adopted son, middleweight Osumanu Adama (19-2 14KO’s) as he is put through the biggest test in his professional boxing career as he is scheduled to face former IBF light middleweight champion Roman “Made In Hell” Karmazin (40-4-2, 26 KOs), the bout is an IBF proposed eliminator box off.

One half of the co-main event will be former WBA world champion “Vicious” Vivian Harris (29-7-1 19KO’s) taking on former Indiana state champion Jermaine “Hawk” White (17-4 9KO’s) in a 10 round contest. There has been a great buzz surrounding this fight due to the all out action style of fighting both of these welterweights bring.

The undercard will feature middleweights Derrick Findley, Ramon Valenzuela Jr, Super Middleweight “Irish” Joe McCreedy, Light welterweights Sean Eklund and Antonio Canas as well as heavyweight Boban Simic who is making his long awaited professional debut.

– Friday, September 30, 2011 8:00pm ET featuring American Mixed Martial Arts Fight League returns to Newtown Athletic Club, Newtown, Pennsylvania. [Free Viewing] “We’ve got some really top notch local Philadelphia, New Jersey, New York metro fighters. Everyone is relatively local so that helps with ticket sales and excitement. We’ve got guys like Chris Wing, who’s a phenomenal fighter out of Philadelphia. He’s fighting Jason Lee. Jason fought on our last two cards. Unfortunately he came up short but he’s a tremendous, exciting fighter. And I don’t think his record shows exactly how good of a fighter he is. And we have some other top guys that I think are not only going to be exciting for the fight but really drive a good crowd in there.” Wing vs. Lee is certainly a worthy main event, and fans will be treated to great fight. “I expect that to be an incredibly exciting match,” McCann said. “Both guys are going to absolutely bring it to the table. And Chris has a huge following in the Philadelphia area. He’s got big support, which is very helpful. I expect there to be a lot Chris Wing fans in the crowd that night. ” Also on hand will be legendary UFC Hall of Famer Dan “The Beast” Severn. “Dan “The Beast” Severn is going to be at the event and that’s pretty exciting for us.,” McCann explained. “Dan will have a table set up at the front, where you can meet and greet and get your picture taken with him. He’s a very nice guy, polite and outgoing, and the fans really enjoy meeting him.”

– Saturday, October 1, 2011 7:00pm ET featuring Blackeye Promotions V – Breast Cancer Beatdown at the WNC AG Center in Fletcher, North Carolina. With the current landscape of Women’s MMA being on shaky ground, Blackeye Promotions is stepping up to the plate to keep the budding sport alive and thriving. In the main event, Strikeforce vet Roxanne Modafferi (14-6) will battle Barb Honchak (4-1) in a 125 lb bout. Modafferi has fought a who’s who of the top females on the MMA circuit but has been out of the public spotlight since her last bout with Strikeforce which was for the title. Now she is ready to kick-start her career back into high gear with the bout against Honchak. Modafferi has shown she is dangerous with submissions and has knockout power. She is a tough draw for anyone in her weight class. For Honchak, this will be her fourth fight in 2011 and the other three have all been victories. Honchak will look to continue her streak against Modafferi. This is a premium cable type of event. You won’t find a better matchup of female gladiators in any other promotion. Watch as these two women show that MMA is not just a boys club anymore. In another high stakes event, Chelsea Colarelli (6-2) fights Patricia Vidonic (3-1) in an exciting 125 lb bout. Colarelli is on a five-fight win streak, all by submission or knockout, and holds another organization’s title belt already. She is the real deal on the ground and a proficient standup striker as well. Vidonic holds a three-fight win streak herself and is also a champion from a different organization. The winner of this contender’s bout might be next in line to face the winner of the Modafferi vs Honchak bout, and for fans of MMA that is a great thing.

– Saturday, October 1, 2011 8:00pm ET featuring SoCal Battle of the Badges 2011Boxing, Pechanga Hotel & Casino, SoCal, California. The men and women of law enforcement, fire protection and other public safety agencies put down their shields and badges, lace up their gloves and enter the ring in support of not only Cops 4 Kids & Communities and other local charitable organizations, but to honor the many fallen heroes and their families. Cops 4 Kids & Communities is a non-profit organization founded by members of law enforcement that assists and encourages children and teens through mentoring, educational, sports, arts programs, field trips, football camps, martial arts, “School of Rock” and more. The organization also has a C4KC Youth Boxing Club. As you can imagine, nonprofits and schools are facing a fundraising crisis right now. This event allows us the opportunity to provide low cost entertainment for the whole family, but also the opportunity to raise money for our youth programs without asking for a direct donation during these economic times and financial uncertainty. The prestigious Pechanga Resort & Casino will once again host this year’s Fifteenth annual Battle of the Badges at their impressive Grand Ballroom boxing venue. This event will take place on Saturday, October 1st with doors opening at 4:00 pm and the first bout starting at 5:00 pm. This charity amateur boxing event promises to be a knockout as the “loaded guns and firepower” inside the ropes meet toe-to-toe all in the name of charity. Flores, Coyne Headline Home State Card—WATCH FIGHT LIVE ON GFL

CLICK TO ORDER THE FIGHT CARD
Missouri natives BJ Flores and Ryan Coyne return to action on October 15 at the O’Reilly Family Events Center on the campus of Drury University in Springfield, Missouri. In the evening’s main event, Willard native BJ ‘El Peligroso’ Flores looks to climb the cruiserweight rankings as he takes on Paul Jennette. Flores defeated highly regarded Nicholas Iannuzzi by TKO on July 23rd in the same arena.

States Flores, “Jennette is a very tough guy who looks to take the fight to the opponent, often being on the offensive. That style is very similar to mine, so on October 15th, something has to give. Its going to be a very exciting fight, but I’m knocking Jennette out. I’m just thrilled to be back in my hometown fighting in front of family and friends. An impressive victory here only builds my case for a shot at the world title. I want be satisfied until I win a world title, and defend it back in my hometown.”

Ryan ‘The Irish Outlaw’ Coyne has yet to taste defeat as he’s built a record of 17-0. Still, ‘The Irish Outlaw’ believe his best shot at a world title may come at Light Heavyweight, and this fight will take place at 185 pounds. James Crawford has fought Danny Green, Jean Pascal, Jeff Lacy, Adrian Diaconu, and others in a career that has seen him win 40 times. No doubt the Light Heavyweight division beter be on notice as ‘The Irish Outlaw’ will be making a title run.

Both Coyne and Flores look to be active in 2012 as they each try and win a world title. Other bouts on this action packed card include:

Highly regarded young phenom (113-5 as an amateur) Orlando Utsey vs TBA

Will Grover vs Justin Ridgway

Jesse Cook (Debut) vs DeAngelo Clardy

AJ Van Camp vs Ryan Pederson

Steven Mincks vs Robbie Cannon

Rodriguez – Wolak II set for Cotto – Margarito II undercard

According to Dan Rafael of espn.com, one of the candidates for Fight of They Year will have it’s sequal on the December 3rd Miguel Cotto – Antonio Margarito undercard as Jr. Middleweight Delvin Rodriguez and Pawel Wolak will attempt to pick up where they left off their July 15th slugfest that ended in a draw.

The card will take place at Madison Square Garden.

“The rematch is a little sooner than I wanted as I wanted a title to be in place first, but the fans deserve this and this is the right stage,” Wolak told ESPN.com on Wednesday night after agreeing to the fight. “You know it will be another classic.”

“I want the fight. It’s a great fight and a great opportunity,” Rodriguez said. “It is definitely a tough fight, but I enjoyed our first fight and I know I have to be 150 percent in shape, the best I can be. He brought out the best in me. He’s a guy you have to be prepared for to be able to keep up. I see the fight going even better for myself this time.”

“It’s turning out to be, on paper, the perfect night,” Top Rank president Todd duBoef said. “What a way to come back to the Garden after not having a big fight there for a while. There is a slow process that occurs when making matches but for this one, everything ended falling into place perfectly.”

Wednesday, Top Rank’s Carl Moretti worked it out with Dunkin and DeGuardia while Ramos-Rigondeaux is headed for a purse bid.

“Adding this fight to the card, they’re going to need a renovation from the renovation with the place being so crazy,” Moretti said, referring to the ongoing overhaul at Madison Square Garden. “Delvin brings a crowd, the Polish fans will be there to support Wolak and you have a big main event, it is going to be crazy. It’s going to be a special night at the Garden.”

“People want the fight. This fight needs no promotion,” Rodriguez said. “Fighting under Cotto-Margarito, I know the crowd will be jumping. People have been waiting for this fight since right after the first fight. Everyone keeps asking, ‘When is the rematch?’ It’s something people keep telling me about, something boxing needs.”

Cunningham: “The weapons are oiled, I´m ready to go to war”

IBF Cruiserweight Champion Steve Cunningham (24-2, 12 KOs) is “ready to go to war on Saturday night” when he clashes with Yoan Pablo Hernandez (24-1, 13 KOs) in Neubrandenburg, Germany. The 35-year-old American voiced his confidence today during the final press conference in a redesigned church. “I have followed his career for a long time. Hernandez is one of the top cruiserweights and a very strong opponent. But I have defeated all reigning cruiserweights champions and I will clinch another victory on Saturday night. The weapons are oiled and I am ready to go to war.”

Hernandez, who became the WBA Interim Cruiserweight Champion in February when he stopped Steve Herelius, is looking forward to Saturday night. “Cunningham is good, I know what he did to my training partner and stablemate Marco Huck. Saturday will be time for revenge. I have a lot of respect for him but I am ready to become world champion.”

Also on Saturday night, former IBF Middleweight Champion Sebastian Sylvester (34-4-1, 16 KOs) makes his comeback after losing his title to Daniel Geale. He will face Grzegorz Proksa (25-0, 18 KOs) for the vacant European Middleweight Title. “I am not impressed by Sylvester,” Proksa said. “He has shown no improvement in his last fights. I don´t think he will have any surprises for me. I will remain unbeaten and I will win the title on Saturday.” Sylvester was unimpressed. “He talks like he is the big favourite and I don´t have a chance at all. That´s fine for me. He can say what he wants. All I will do is show up on Saturday night, win all 12 rounds and then I´m done with him.”

In the third title fight of the night, Karo Murat defends his IBF Intercontinental Light Heavyweight Title against Gabriel Campillo.

3 Steps to Building up Endurance
Step 1

Train at home. Endurance is all about pushing the physical limits of your body, so it’s unwise to only exercise at assigned times and leave your body to rot all other times. At home, you can use an exercise ball to help strengthen your abdominal region and power up your core, while using a jump rope can help you master breathing and long-term energy drains. Endurance is about mastery of repetitive motions, and the better you can maintain your energy level for long periods of time, the better you’ll do in the boxing ring or on the track.

Step 2
Mix things up. If you spend all of your time long distance running to build up your endurance, you’re missing out on other areas of need. You have to balance time on the treadmill with time lifting weights, sparring with others, etc. People who tend to stick to very exacting routines often have trouble with this approach, but if you can manage to add some variety into your workouts, it is going to pay off. After all, you can’t train your whole body by only focusing on a few specific areas, so what you work out and how often are both things you need to take into account.

Step 3
Rest up. When training, some athletes push themselves so hard that they don’t allow their bodies time to recuperate. A drained body isn’t going to give you much in the way of success, however, so try to avoid running yourself in the ground. For instance, if you’re really beat one day, give yourself the day off. It may seem like the end of the world at the time, but the boxing ring, the treadmill, and the entire gym will be there the next day. Once rested, you’ll be better able to focus on the training you need to succeed in the ring and beyond.

CLICK TO ORDER THE FIGHT CARD
Philadelphia, PA—Undefeated junior middleweight Julian J-Rock Williams, of Philadelphia, PA, will test himself against seasoned Eberto Medina,of Newark, NJ, in the six-round semifinal contest on Friday, Sept. 30, at the National Guard Armory in Northeast Philadelphia. First fight is 7.30 p.m.

Headlining the eight-bout card is an eight-round welterweight contest between Ray Robinson, of Philadelphia, PA, and Manuel Guzman, of Lancaster, PA.

This will mark Williams’ second fight in his hometown and is ready to impress his fans. He made his pro debut in Philadelphia in May of 2010 when he stopped Antonio Chaves Fernandez, of Brockton, MA, in the first round of the scheduled four-round bout.

Williams has boxed in five different states but he is looking forward to fighting at home again. He is confident with testing himself at any level.

A pro less than two years, Williams is 7-0-1, 4 K0s, and already he has boxed four times in 2011. He has faced every type of opponent from 72-fight journeyman Marteze Logan, of Covington, TN, to up-and-coming prospect Francisco Santana, of Santa Barbara, CA.

Medina (5-6-1, 1K0) recently fought a six-round draw with Williams’ gym-mate (Shuler’s gym) Jamaal Davis, of Philadelphia, PA, on July 15 at Bally’s Atlantic City.

Medina also faced junior middleweight prospect Glen Tapia, of Passaic, NJ, earlier this year. He also lost by decision to The New Ray Robinson, in 2008 in the same ring. Williams will be Medina’s seventh fight against an undefeated prospect.

Other six-round matches feature undefeated junior middleweights DeCarlo Perez (5-0, 1K0), of Atlantic City, NJ, against Grayson Blake (3-0, 1K0), of State College, PA, as well as light-heavyweights Charles Hayward (7-2, 3K0s), of Philadelphia, PA, and George Armenta (13-7, 11K0s), of Silver Spring, MD.

Four four-round bouts complete the card.

Gunn to Attend “Knuckle” Movie Premier!

Hackensack, NJ (September 25, 2011) – Former IBA world cruiserweight champion Bobby “The Celtic Warrior” Gunn will make a special guest appearance at the premier party of “Knuckle” Friday, September 30 at the Irish Film Festival in New York City.

Gunn, who battled Tomasz Adamek and Enzo Maccarinelli, is globally recognized in the fight game for competing in both professional boxing matches along with organized bare knuckle fights. Gunn, a colorful Canadian based in New Jersey, was personally invited to the event by bare knuckle fighting legend and future opponent James Quinn.

“It’s a great honor to attend the premier,” said Gunn, who recently knocked out Richard Stewart in America’s first sanctioned bare knuckle bout in more then 120 years. “A lot of Hollywood stars are confirmed guests, so to be sitting amongst them while they watch the movie will be incomparable to anything I’ve ever done.”

The film’s director is Ian Palmer and a mini-series on Irish bare knuckle fighting directed by Eastbound and Down star Danny McBride will air on HBO in the near future.

Gunn is currently working out the details for a 2012 fight against the aforementioned Quinn.

Rios title defense added to Cotto – Margarito II card

Dan Rafael of espn.com is reporting that Brandon Rios will defend his WBA Lightweight title as part of the Miguel Cotto – Antonio Margarito II undercard in December 3rd in New York.

The bout will replace a previously announced WBA Super Bantamweight title clash between Rico Ramos and Guillermo Rigondeaux.

The Ramos – Rigondeaux bout was pulled from the card after a miscommunication between promoter’s Bob Arum and Dan Goossen of terms of the bout.

“We’re happy to get Brandon back in the ring. He has a telegenic personality, but it’s not just about being able to put Brandon on a major pay-per-view card that is so good. It’s about being able to put him on in Madison Square Garden and in front of a big New York crowd,” said Top Rank president Todd duBoef. “They will eat up his personality and his fighting style.”

“He was begging us at the press conference, telling us how much he wanted to be on the show,” duBoef said. “Well, he got what he wanted.”

“It’s great. We’re going to have the whole team together with Margarito. It’s pretty cool,” Rios said.

“It’s an honor to fight at that venue,” Rios said. “I’ve been told there’s something special about fighting at Madison Square Garden and I’m training hard to give fans a great fight.”

All in a night's work: Arce evens score, defends title; adds to legacy with fourth round stoppage over Nongqayi

Jorge Arce proved once again that he is one of the most exciting fighters in the past twenty years as he avenged an earlier defeat to stop Simphiwe Nongqayi to defend the WBO Super Bantamweight tile in Mexicali, Mexico.

Arce dropped Nongqayi in round onw from a left hook and then continued to back the challenger up. In round four, Nongqayi caught Arce with headbutt which opened up a terrible cut around the left eye of the champion.

As usual that only inspired Arce as he came back to freeze2:01 of round four. Nongqayi on the ropes that opened the gates for an unanswered combination on the defenseless challenger and the fight was stopped at 2:01 of round four.

The fight was a rematch of a September 15th, 2009 fight that saw Nongqayi win the IBF Jr. Bantamweight title with a unanimous decision over Arce.

Arce, 122 lbs of Los Mochis, Mexico is now 58-6-1 with forty-five knockouts. Nongqay, 122 lbs of London, South Africa is now 16-2-1.

Victor Terrazas scored a fourth round stoppage over Eduard Becerril in round four of a scheduled ten round Super Bantamweight bout.

Terrazas dropped Becerril in round three from a left hook. Becerril fought back in an effort to stay in the fight but that only lasted another round as Terrazas landed a big uppercut that set off a huge exchange on the ropes for which Terrazas landed a barrage of punches and fight was stopped at 2:12 of round four.

Terrazas is now 31–21 with eighteen knockouts Becerril, 123 lbs is now 13-10-2.

ANDRE WARD’S TRAINING CAMP INJURY FORCES POSTPONEMENT OF SUPER SIX WORLD BOXING CLASSIC FINAL VS. CARL FROCH

NEW YORK (Sept. 23, 2011) – Andre Ward, the WBA Super Middleweight World Champion and Super Six finalist, sustained a cut above his right eye during a sparring session on Thursday, Sept. 22. As a result, the Super Six World Boxing Classic Tournament Final and world title unification fight with fellow Finalist and WBC World Champion Carl Froch has been postponed. The announcement was made jointly today by Ward’s promoter, Dan Goossen of Goossen Tutor Promotions, Froch’s promoter, Eddie Hearn of Matchroom Sport, and Ken Hershman of SHOWTIME Sports®.

The Final was scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 29 in Atlantic City, NJ. The promoters and Hershman are working together to identify a new date for the significant matchup.

The SHOWTIME Sports documentary film crew FIGHT CAMP 360°: Inside The Super Six World Boxing Classic was filming for the next episodes of the acclaimed series at the time of the incident at Ward’s gym in Oakland, Calif. The camera crew joined Ward on an impromptu flight from the Bay Area to Los Angeles, where Ward received seven stitches from leading plastic surgeon Dr. Paul Wallace to close the cut. Ward was informed by Wallace that he would be unable to fight as scheduled on October 29 and that he will remove the stitches next Thursday, Sept. 29. The next episode of FIGHT CAMP 360° is scheduled for Oct. 8, 10 p.m. ET/PT on SHOWTIME®.

Ward said: “I’m extremely disappointed about this cut. We used every precaution, including headgear with a face bar and it was just a fluke situation. My sparring partner and I were involved in an exchange inside and the next thing I knew, I was bleeding. That is the most frustrating thing about this—I don’t have an explanation for how it happened.

“This is very frustrating for my camp and I, and I knew that if the shoe was on the other foot and Froch suffered an injury, I would be extremely disappointed.

“We were in full camp and counting down the days until October 29. At this point, I’m looking forward to healing up and getting a new date to finish what I started and become the Super Six Champion.”

Ward continued, “I’d like to express my apologies to SHOWTIME, the fans and the Froch camp, but this is part of boxing. Ward and Froch will still get it on but, unfortunately, the date just has to be pushed back.”

“This is absurd and unprofessional. Ward needs to get his act together,” said Froch shortly after hearing the news. “Of course, you’ve got to take the medical advice seriously, but for a cut to put you out of a fight a full five weeks before the event is ludicrous. If it were two weeks out from the fight, maybe I’d understand. But he’s got 35 days to deal with it. To me, he’s showing his weakness. Nothing changes for me. I’ll be ready if and when he shows up.”

“Not much you can say,” said Goossen. “Andre was cut, he got stitched up, and he’ll be back as soon as possible.”

“Injuries in boxing are inevitable at this, the highest level of competition,” said Hershman, the man behind the groundbreaking tournament. “As we’ve done since this tournament’s inception, we’ll forge ahead. We are seeking available dates at this time and hope to have an announcement shortly. Rest assured, we will deliver this dramatic final tournament bout, one that is surely the biggest fight in this division’s history.”

Said Hearn, “Obviously it is frustrating. Carl’s camp has gone perfectly and we were ready to unify the titles on October 29. Carl is in the shape of his life but he is a true professional and will take this in his stride and be ready for victory on a date given in 2011.”

SEN. BAYH URGES LABOR BOARD TO HEAR CASES CLARIFYING NATIONAL LABOR RELATIONS ACT go to web site national labor relations act

US Fed News Service, Including US State News July 21, 2006 The office of Sen. Evan Bayh, D-Ind., issued the following press release:

Sen. Evan Bayh today joined 24 senators in a letter to National Labor Relations Board (NRLB) Chairman Robert Battista calling on the Board to reverse its decision not to hear arguments in three cases expected to clarify collective bargaining rights for Hoosier workers. In the letter, the coalition of senators asked Battista to remember that the outcome of the cases, which are expected to answer questions regarding the definition of “supervisor,” could impact the collective bargaining rights of hundreds of thousands of American workers. In Indiana, thousands of workers, including an estimated 18,000 registered nurses and 28,500 construction workers, could lose their right to unionize or bargain collectively if the board significantly broadens the definition.

“The question of who is a statutorily defined supervisor is of fundamental importance to labor relations in the United States and the right of employees to protection under the [National Labor Relations] Act, and we’re dedicated to protecting that right,” the senators wrote in the letter. “Healthcare professionals and workers from many different industries have expressed their concern to us about the outcome of these cases.” The three so-called “Kentucky River” cases–Oakwood Healthcare, Inc., Golden Crest Healthcare Center, and Croft Metals, Inc.–are expected to resolve issues left open by the Supreme Court’s Kentucky River decision in 2001. The cases address whether certain employees can be considered supervisors, a significant designation because supervisors are prohibited from forming unions under the National Labor Relations Act. The outcome of the cases is of particular concern to Indiana because of the potential impact on the manufacturing sector. More than 1,000 Hoosiers have contacted Senator Bayh’s office urging him to call on NLRB to reverse its decision. this web site national labor relations act

“This dispute has gone on long enough; this important issue clearly merits a hearing before the National Labor Relations Board,” Senator Bayh said. “We can do right by workers and business at the same time by holding oral arguments so that the board can reach a fully informed decision.” In their letter, the senators noted that the Supreme Court has rejected the NLRB’s definition of supervisory status twice in the past 10 years, and expressed concern that the board has not held oral arguments in any cases during Battista’s tenure as chairman. The board’s ruling on the Kentucky River cases is expected sometime this summer.

Alvarado – Prescott; Cruz – Burgos on Pacquiao – Marquez III undercard

Dan Rafael of espn.com is reporting that two fights have been agreed upon for the November 12th Pay Per View undercard that will be highlighted the third fight between Manny Pacquiao – and Juan Manuel Marquez in Las Vegas.

One of the bouts will have junior welterweight contender Mike Alvarado (31-0, 22 KOs) of Denver facing Colombia’s Breidis Prescott (24-3, 19 KOs).

“That’s a pretty good fight isn’t it? I think so. It’s a good test for Alvarado and a good fight,” Arum said.

In a fight that will open the PPV broadcast, Arum said that Puerto Rican junior lightweight Luis Cruz (19-0, 15 KOs), who recently signed with Top Rank as his co-promoter, will face Juan Carlos Burgos (27-1, 19 KOs), a former featherweight title challenger who is moving up in weight.

Jones – Lujan; Rigondeaux – Ramos set for Cotto – Margarito II undercard

Dan rafael of espn.com confirmed a video interview with Bob Arum on www.15rounds.com that undefeated Mike Jones will take on rough and rugged Sebastian Lujan plus Guillermo Rogondeaux will take on Rico Ramos as part of the Miguel Cotto – Antonio Margarito undercard set for December 3rd in New York.

Russell Peltz, who co-promotes Jones (25-0, 19 KOs) with Arum, said everyone on their team realizes it is a dangerous fight. Known for having a strong chin, Lujan (38-5-2, 24 KOs) is riding a 12-fight winning streak, including a dominant ninth-round knockout of promising Mark Melligen on ESPN2 on July 1.

“I think it’s a lot tougher fight than Mike had with (Jesus) Soto Karass,” Peltz said of the most difficult fights so far in Jones’ career, back-to-back competitive decision wins against Soto Karass in November 20010 and in the February rematch. “(Jones) says if fighting this kind of fight is what he has to do to get a title shot, it is what he has to do. He has to be in better shape than he was for the second Soto Karass fight.”

Said Jones: “Lujan puts on pressure, but not constant pressure like Karass. He moves his head a lot more than Karass but throws wide punches, which I will take advantage of. This will put me in line for a money fight.”

Arum said the third televised undercard fight has not been set yet but that Top Rank president Todd duBoef “was working on it and I can’t say what it is yet because it’s not done.”

Also back in action on the undercard will be junior middleweight Pawel Wolak, although his bout is not scheduled to be part of the HBO PPV broadcast. Wolak’s opponent is not set, but manager Cameron Dunkin said they are OK with the fight not being on the telecast.

I’m trying to do certain things with him but it’s been tough. We wanted (titlist Cornelius) Bundrage, but there wasn’t the money to deliver it and Bundrage is with (promoter) Don King, which is never easy,” Dunkin said. “So I’m trying to get him back out there and keep him active. We wanted him on TV but there wasn’t a spot for him. This fight is the start and we’ll keep him going from here.”

“Excited,” Wolak said. “Unfortunately, (Bundrage) was scared. Canelo (Alvarez) and (Julio Cesar) Chavez (Jr.) aren’t available and worried and there was no (premium) network interest in a rematch with Delvin, so we are going to Plan B. That is why I signed with a competent manager as he knows how to get me where I want to go.”

Said Top Rank promoter Bob Arum: “Wolak wants a title fight. Rather than argue with him we said, ‘We’ll put you in with a second-level guy, but it won’t be on television’ and that way he stays active and I don’t embarrass myself with the televised undercard.”

Ruiz Ready for a Challenge

Bantamweight prospect Michael Ruiz Jr. takes a step up in class tomorrow night as he vies for his first professional title against fellow unbeaten Jonathan Arrellano in the eight-round main event at the Doubletree Hotel in Ontario, California. The fight, which will air at a later date on Fox Deportes, takes place at 121-pounds and is for the WBC Youth Intercontinental Super Bantamweight title.

Ruiz (8-0-1, 3 KOs) of Fresno, California was last in the ring in May, scoring a six-round unanimous decision over durable Jonathan Alcantara in Reno, Nevada. In the months since, Ruiz has remained in the gym, readying for whenever he got the call for his next fight. “I am always in the gym, so when they called me for this fight, I was ready for it,” explains Ruiz.

Ruiz’ team had been looking for a chance to make a splash against the next level of opponent when Arrellano came available. “It is a good fight for Mike,” says Ruiz’ father and trainer Michael Ruiz Sr. “This is what we need to showcase what he has against somebody that is undefeated also. [A win] would put him up there on the skill level where other boxers are, where they get more exposed. So it will give Michael the opportunity at more exposure and better his career tremendously.”

For Ruiz’ manager Repo Ric, the fight has a personal aspect. “This will be a big night for me,” explains Repo. “Henry Ramirez, which is the manager of the kid…the way we met was over the phone. He’s cussing me out, I’m cussing him out. He’s saying he can whoop any fighter I got. Well it’s time for that now. Let’s get it on.”

Repo is very familiar with the undefeated Arrellano (9-0-1, 2 KOs) of Ontario. “This guy is a very good fighter,” says Repo. “Actually the way I met the kid, he came up to me at a fight one day said he’d like for me to be a hype man for him. He pulled out his iphone and showed me a video of me coming out of a dressing room talking trash to another fighter. I actually ended up being a hype man for him one fight, so now I am going to go against this kid that really likes me. But its business now, he can like me after the fight. Right now it’s straight business.”

Ruiz, who traveled down Los Angeles to get in some work with Shane Mosley strength and conditioning coach Gustavo Satragni and some ring time at the local gyms, is more than prepared for tomorrow night. “Every fight I go in with the same preparation, always to win and never underestimate anybody,” explains Ruiz. “I am always confident and I always go in with the same mindset. I’ve only seen a couple of his fights, but he’s pretty skilled. He has a jab, good hooks. He sits back a lot. He has good hand movement, good foot movement, but not anything we can’t handle. This fight is like any other fight.”

In against an undefeated fighter, with a title on the line and television cameras rolling, Ruiz understands this is his chance to seize a moment and take a big step forward in his pursuit. “I just want to show people my skills and show what I can do against someone that is supposed to be pretty good,” says Ruiz. “This is an opportunity to show where I am at in my career and where I am going to go in the future.”

Tickets for the event, promoted by Thompson Boxing Promotions, are available online at ThompsonBoxing.com.

Mares – Agbeko rematch set for December 3rd

Dan Rafael of espn.com is reporting that a rematch of one of the more controversial bouts between IBF Bantamweight champion Abner and former champ Joseph Agbeko will take place December 3rd at the Honda Center in Anaheim, California and will be telecast live on Showtime.

The first fight was marred in controversy after referee Russell Mora missed in upwards of twenty low blows committed by Mares and one of those resulted in a knockdown which helped Mares eek out a majority decision earlier this Summer.

In the co-deature, Bantamweight titlist Anselmo Moreno will make his Golden Boy Promotions debut when he takes on former world champion Vic Darchinyan.

“We have finalized it,” said Golden Boy’s Richard Schaefer. “I’m thrilled about it. It’s a much-anticipated rematch.”

Vinny Scolpino, Agbeko’s manager, said they were just pleased to get the deal done and get a another chance against Mares.

“I think Joseph goes back in there and beats Mares. He knows what he did wrong the first time and I think he’ll take the title home,” Scolpino said. “This is a great opportunity. I’m glad Showtime stepped up to the plate and made it happen. They needed to get some extra money for their budget, but they did the right thing. I’m happy that Joseph gets another opportunity to get his belt back. That’s the bottom line, whatever happened in the first fight.”

“I really think when it comes to this weight class that this is Abner Mares’ time,” Schaefer said. “When you watch him and how he has developed the last year or so, he has really developed into a top bantamweight. The first time he beat Agbeko it wasn’t a fluke. He will confirm that and remain world champion in an impressive manner. That is what I expect from him. This is his time.”

“Abner is looking forward to clearing up any doubt that took place in the first fight,” Frank Espinoza, Mares’ manager, said. “It’s the right call for Abner and the right call for Agbeko. It’s the right thing. Golden Boy and Team Mares just want to clear up any doubts in the rematch. Abner is excited and looking forward to starting training on Monday. These guys are both warriors. They will give a great fight again and please the fans.”

“Dec. 3 was the only date we had to work with so it is what it is, but this is a much-talked about rematch, especially in Los Angeles, and it will be a much covered event. The fact is that the first fight did well on Showtime and we think it will do well again. It is an event that stands on its own. In today’s day and age, with the economy the way it is, I think that it is going to be a welcome gift from Showtime to boxing fans that they can see it without having to pull out their wallet.”

“Moreno and Darchinyan, that’s another interesting fight,” Schaefer said. “You have two really exciting bantamweight fights on the same night, so I think it will do extremely well.”

This week on GFL COMBAT SPORTS NETWORK

– Friday, September 23, 2011 9:00pm ET featuring School of Hard Knocks Fighting Championship 14, Century Casino, Calgary, Canada. In the main event, Keto Allen (6-2) fights Andrew Buckland (13-8-1) in a welterweight championship bout in a battle of British Columbia natives. Allen is coming off of an impressive first round submission win in July and looks to add to his momentum with the bout against Buckland. Buckland is on a two fight submission win streak of his own. Buckland has fought all over Canada and his record reads like a “who’s who” of some of the top MMA fighters from the Great White North. With the HKFC Welterweight Championship on the line, expect these two gladiators to leave it all in the cage. Both guys have wins via TKO and submission and are well-rounded athletes, but it might come down to experience as Buckland has faced much tougher opponents throughout his career. This is a great matchup and what is sure to be a barnburner of a fight. In the co-main event, Charmaine “Not So Sweet” Tweet (0-1) battles Heather Martin (2-1, amateur record) who is making her professional debut. Tweet is coming off of a tough debut fight with Ronda Rousey who caused quite a buzz with her last fight in Strikeforce. For Tweet, the bout with Martin is another opportunity to showcase her overall MMA skillset which begins with her base, kickboxing. Tweet was also able to show some great scrambling in her previous fight so she is quite proficient in her standup and ground. Martin is no stranger to throwing punches and will look to mix it up with Tweet on the feet. Expect Martin to stand in the middle of the cage and throw punches in bunches. This bout could be Fight of the Night and should be action packed from the opening bell. Along with 5 pro bouts, HKFC is also a proving ground for amateur fighters ready to earn their stripes. The 10-bout amateur series will separate the contenders from the pretenders and build to the future for HKFC and Canadian MMA.

– Friday, September 23, 2011 9:30pm ET featuring Rumble in the Cage 44 from Lethbridge Exhibition Grand Stands, Lethbridge, Canada. The main event, Dan Chambers (16-16) fights Brandon MacArthur (5-17) in a middleweight bout. Both are veterans inside of the cage and have fought some of the toughest Canada has to offer. Chambers is on a two-fight win stream winning via TKO in Round 1 in both, and will look to carry that momentum into this bout and improve his record past .500. Look for Chambers to come out swinging and try to get another early stoppage. For MacArthur, he finds himself on the opposite side of the coin, losing his last two. Expect MacArthur to throw everything but the kitchen sink at Chambers in hopes of starting his own winning streak at Chambers’ expense. All of MacArthur’s victories have come via submission so if the fight gets to the ground expect MacArthur to try and isolate an arm, leg or the neck. In the co-main event, Jared Kilkenny (9-8) battles Moise Rimbon (17-9-3) in a heavyweight battle. Kilkenny is more of a banger, while Rimbon likes to strike but also has a great ground game, finishing two of his last three opponents with submissions. Kilkenny is the smaller of the two and should have better cardio conditioning going into the fight, so his game plan might focus on trying to wear out the bigger Rimbon. For Rimbon, he has fought a bevy of champions including Alistair Overeem, Antonio Rogerio Nogueira and Ricco Rodriguez. Expect him to use is experience advantage and try to overpower Kilkenny in the early going. Don’t blink when these two brahma bulls get in the cage. There should be fireworks from the opening bell.

Other non MMA events this week: Thursday Night Fights Boxing – Hong Kong Kowloon Bay International Exhibition Center, Hong Kong, VOD Fri. Sep 23, 12pm ET. / Lucha Xtreme Wrestling – Raging Heat, Sun. Sept. 25, 5pm ET.

BAM ON BOXING: The New Ray Robinson–WATCH FIGHT ON GFL

CLICK TO ORDER THE FIGHT
Ray Robinson, not the original Sugar Ray Robinson but the New Ray Robinson, carries the name of an all-time great. At heart, though, he’s simply a down-to-earth guy trying to make his own way in the world.

I asked the New Ray Robinson to talk about himself, but the first thing he wanted to do was let me know he has six other siblings. He mentioned nothing of the hardships he endured growing up. He said his mother is his “Rock” — the source of his mental strength and drive! He idolizes her. She dealt with adversity raising seven kids on her own but managed to keep them together.

Robinson spoke about Howard “Moses” Mosley, his trainer and, in Robinson’s words, his “father”. He said Mosley–regarded as one of the best trainers in Philadelphia–would pick him up every day and take him to the gym along with other kids. Robinson said Mosley helped him and so many other kids that he lost count. There is true respect between these two. Adversity and sacrifice have welded them together for life.

I remember my first time meeting the duo—they seemed inseparable. You could tell by looking at Robinson and Mosley that they had been working together for a long time and Robinson looked up to his trainer.

As an amateur, Robinson won the Junior Olympics and Silver Gloves. He was the member of the US Boxing Team. He lived at Marquette University in Michigan, where he attended school. He boxed in Italy, Russia, Turkey and Canada on Team USA.

His professional record (11-2, 4 K0s) is impressive, especially considering the stiff competition he has faced. Robinson is not afraid to take risks. He will fight anyone at any time. The tall southpaw is coming off of a 14-month layoff and is ready to get his feet wet again.

In an era when undefeated fighters are maneuvered through the rankings, Robinson has taken the tough fights that others do not. His opponents include Eberto Medina, Darnell Jiles, Brad Solomon and Shawn Porter. Robinson has fought on television a few times and has never disappointed his fans, regardless of the outcome.

When you see him fight, watch every move he makes. He knows angles and has solutions for almost anything his opponents bring to the ring.

Outside the ring, Robinson married his girlfriend of six years, Angie, a native of Detroit. She believes in Robinson and she moved to Philadelphia to support him and start their family. They have a 3-year-old daughter named Mya. Robinson has a father-daughter connection that is stronger than any other relationship in his life. His daughter comes first!

Robinson trains at the Joe Hand Boxing Gym on North 3rd Street. Previously, he worked out of the Front Street gym in Kensington, where I first saw the connection between father and daughter. He would ride the bus to the gym with his daughter, her stroller, the baby bag and his boxing bag and he would carry her up the steps of the gym and take care of her while he was training. She is not only his motivation, but also his world.

Robinson is one of the nicest guys you could meet–until you get him in the ring on fight night. Then he becomes a different person. His never loses focus. He sticks to boxing basics, starting every combination with the jab. It seems like once fighters get to have 10 fights, they focus on a television shot. Not Robinson! He is focused on solely on fighting at home again for the second time in his professional career. He wants to build a relationship with Philadelphia fans and continue fighting in the area.

FIRST LADY LAURA BUSH FIRST LADY LAURA BUSH ANNOUNCES LAURA BUSH FOUNDATION GRANTS AT THE HENRY C. SCHAUMBURG ELEMENTARY SCHOOL

Washington Transcript Service March 3, 2008

Washington Transcript Service 03-03-2008 LAURA BUSH ANNOUNCES LAURA BUSH FOUNDATION GRANTS AT THE HENRY C. SCHAUMBURG ELEMENTARY SCHOOL, NEW ORLEANS, LOUISIANA, AS RELEASED BY THE WHITE HOUSE MARCH 3, 2008 SPEAKER: FIRST LADY LAURA BUSH [*] BUSH: Thank you very much, Kiara. Thank you for introducing me and for telling those facts about me that people might not know.

I want to acknowledge Supriya Jindal, Mrs. Jindal, the wife of the Governor of Louisiana. Thank you so much for being here with us today, Supriya. Also, the principal, Mrs. Ripoll, thank you very much for letting us have this great event here at your school. And the librarian at Henry Schaumburg School, Mrs. Magee, thank you. Thank you for being the one who — (applause.) I think it might have been Mrs. Magee’s idea to apply for a grant for a new school library. And a special thanks to Ambassador Pam Willeford. Pam is the chair for the Laura Bush Foundation for America’s Libraries. She’s the one that does all the hard work of reading all the grant applications that come from schools, meeting with all the schools to see if they’re ready for their money so they can get their grant, and then working to pick each one of those schools. So thank you very much, Pam.

And thanks to each and every one of you — especially all the students. Thank you to the little students who are here in front of me who’ve been so patient sitting here so long this morning.

You know, every time I visit the Gulf Coast, I’m encouraged by more progress. I see more progress every time, and one of the great success stories are the schools. Schaumburg looks great. Congratulations to you on how terrific it looks. And I’m so glad that you’re filled with all these new and successful-looking students who are back.

Schools are essential to the recovery that’s under way here. We know that young people who’ve endured the trauma of the storms heal best when they can go back to their own normal routine at their own school.

After Hurricane Katrina, teachers and school superintendents and state school officials faced the unprecedented task of rebuilding whole school districts as fast as possible.

Today in New Orleans, many private and parochial schools are back up and running. More than 80 public schools are open — nearly half of them now run as charter schools, as public-school enrollment has increased, about 20 percent over last year, and school officials have also expanded capacity.

And of course, newly rebuilt schools need rebuilt school libraries. Basic school library collections are a big expense for schools.

A public — basic elementary school library collection costs about $50,000, and a secondary school library collection costs at least $75,000 — from about $75,000 to $150,000. And these are expenses that school districts have on top of all the other expenses of rebuilding.

So in September 2005, just after the hurricanes, the Laura Bush Foundation for America’s Libraries established a special fund to help schools across the Gulf Coast rebuild their book and material collections. Since then, and with the grants we’re awarding today, the Foundation’s Gulf Coast School Library Recovery Initiative has awarded more than $3.7 million to nearly 80 schools in Mississippi, Louisiana, Florida, Alabama, and Texas.

(Applause.) Today we’re also awarding grants to schools that are in Louisiana’s Recovery School District — including Henry Schaumburg. The RSD is a special state school district administered by the Louisiana Department of Education, and it’s made up of 60 public schools. Established in 2003, the RSD is designed to take underperforming schools and transform them into successful educational institutions. Most of the Crescent City’s schools were transferred to the RSD by the Louisiana legislature in 2005 — so the Recovery School District has been tasked with opening new schools to meet the needs of New Orleans’ returning population. go to web site foundation grants

As they welcome students back to the city, RSD schools are upgrading their curriculums to make sure that all children are being taught at grade-level standards. RSD schools improve education for older children by distributing laptops to high-school students, by expanding reading interventions to include 4th through 11th, grade. RSD schools also have smaller class sizes, and they involve the community in making sure New Orleans schools are safe places for New Orleans students.

I want to say thanks to the representatives of the Recovery School District who are here today, and congratulations to the RSD schools that are receiving Laura Bush Foundation grants.

Thanks also to the generous support of philanthropic organizations, businesses, and caring citizens across the whole United States. These grants will help librarians build new collections to support their schools’ new curriculum. And they’ll help young people use these libraries to find comfort and inspiration in their favorite books.

Henry Schaumburg is one of the schools receiving a grant today, and it’s also a great example of how reading, writing and books can help young people overcome the trauma of the hurricane, and how reading, writing and books are essential to helping young people succeed.

I’ve just met with Schaumburg’s Freedom Writers — promising young authors from Ms. McClain’s Reading 180 class. One day during free period, Ms. McClain gave her students a choice: they could either read a magazine or draw. These eight boys decided to draw, and then add words to match their illustrations. Their eagerness to write grew into a club, which soon grew into a book project. The Freedom Writers have just produced the “504 Boyz Go to College” — a novel that portrays them as first-year college students. And I’ve just become a lucky recipient of an autographed copy. (Applause.) This book has a great message about the importance of staying in school and pursuing higher education. And I just want to ask everybody:

How many of you are going to go to college? (Applause.) Great, I hope every one of you grow up and go to college.

As the Freedom Writers have learned about the — written their book, they’ve learned about the process of brainstorming and writing and editing. And they’ve learned how to be successful authors. I know the Freedom Writers are already working on the sequel, and we’re excited about their next book.

One of the Freedom Writers, Joshua Wilson, has said: “By writing this book, I feel I have persuaded people to stay in school … get them to go to college … and do positive things. And I want them to write, too.” Thanks to Joshua and to the whole Freedom Writers group for being such great examples for your fellow students, and congratulations on your book. (Applause.) I also want to thank the AT&T Foundation’s Pioneers who are over here in their t-shirts. Would you all stand up over here? (Applause.) The AT&T Pioneers are retired and active AT&T employees, and they volunteer in schools to improve education. Working with students, the AT&T volunteers teach young people about the importance of reading, and they use their own experiences to highlight the role reading has played in their career success. Thank you for everything you’re doing. Appreciate it very much.

(Applause.) A school’s culture of reading starts with a good school library — and today, I’m pleased to announce that the Henry C. Schaumburg School is receiving a $75,000 grant from the Laura Bush Foundation. (Applause.) When the hurricane struck, Schaumburg’s library had a collection of more than 7,000 books — and the storm destroyed every single one. The destruction at the school mirrors what Schaumburg’s students and teachers face in their own personal lives: many families are still waiting to return to their own homes. here foundation grants

Over the last two and a half years, the Schaumburg community has worked very hard to rebuild. Your faculty says that throughout the process, your students have maintained their positive outlook. The number of your books in your library collection has gone from zero right after the storm to nearly 3,700 today. There’s still a long way to go, though — and your teachers recognize how important these learning materials are to the children who need them. This is what your librarian Mrs. Magee says. She says:

“Students ask daily for reading material. Older students are especially hungry for books as they start to explore their options for education and their career.” Mrs. Magee is optimistic about the Schaumburg library’s future.

She said: “The years have passed, and the struggles continue, but through these struggles, our school meets the challenges with resourcefulness, creativity, and an unquenchable thirst for knowledge.” Congratulations to the Schaumburg School.

And Schaumburg is just one of the 12 schools receiving nearly $560,000 as part of the Foundation’s sixth round of grants, and behind us, on the back two rows, are all of the representatives from the recipient schools that are receiving grants today. Congratulations to each of you.

(Applause.) Today, as we celebrate these awards, I also want to encourage schools throughout the whole Gulf Coast to apply for Foundation grants.

As soon as schools are up and ready, be sure to apply so you can fill your library with a good, new, big collection of books for your students.

Rebuilt schools need rebuilt libraries. And rebuilt libraries will help bring children back to their schools. And rebuilt schools will bring families back to the Gulf Coast.

Thanks to each and every one of you. Congratulations to all the grant recipients. And may God bless you, and may God especially bless the children.

Thank you all very much. (Applause.) END
