Credit card fees worry merchants

Missoulian November 27, 2009 | Dennison, Mike HELENA – When convenience store owner Dave Sutey looks at his bottom line, the second-largest expense is one you might not guess: fees paid to credit card companies and banks, to process credit card purchases in his stores. website dillards credit card

“That’s ahead of rent, lease and payroll taxes,” says Sutey, whose 14 Thriftway Super Stop stores in southwest Montana have paid $312,000 in such fees the first 10 months of this year. “The profit of our entire industry is one-half of what the credit card fees are.” Sutey and his allies in the retail industry, from gas stations to department stores, say they don’t mind paying something in so-called “swipe” or “interchange” fees for the convenience of credit card purchases.

But they believe these unregulated fees have become too costly, and are asking Congress to intervene.

“They can charge whatever they want to charge,” says Bob McCullough, manager of a Tire-Rama tire store in Great Falls. “It’s just a channel for them to get money. We’ve got to reel these banks in.” Montana merchants concerned about credit card fees have been talking to Sen. Jon Tester, D-Mont., who sits on the Senate Banking Committee.

Several proposals have been floated, such as legislating the fees or exempting merchants from antitrust laws, so they can better negotiate the fees with the credit-card issuers.

Tester says he’s interested in the issue, and that it should be studied further. The Banking Committee, which has no bill before it to regulate the fees, will likely hold hearings next year, he says.

Tester also has been talking to the credit card companies and the banks, which say the push for regulation of the fees is nothing more than an attempt by one industry to fix prices to its advantage – at the detriment to consumers.

If Congress sets a ceiling on the swipe fees paid by merchants, credit card companies and banks probably would increase the fees they charge consumers for the cards, says Trish Wexler, spokeswoman for the Electronic Payments Coalition, which represents banks, credit unions, credit card companies and card issuers.

She also notes that while merchants may complain about credit card fees, the rise of credit card use has helped them expand their sales.

“They make more money when their customers pay with plastic,” she says. “(Customers) are no longer restricted to just the cash they have on hand.” While interchange fees may vary from card to card, merchants say VISA and MasterCard, the two most widely used cards, generally charge merchants 2 percent of the purchase price, plus a flat fee of 10 cents per transaction. dillardscreditcardnow.com dillards credit card

So on a $2 bottle of pop, the fee is 14 cents: 10 cents plus 2 percent of the price. On $50 worth of gasoline, the fee is $1.10.

Debit cards can be a point of irritation for merchants, too.

McCullough, the tire store manager, says debit cards are supposed to be like an electronic check, taking money directly out of someone’s bank account. If run with the customer’s PIN, it’s usually a small flat fee, perhaps 60 cents, he says.

But if the debit card is run like a credit card, the banks charge a percentage that can range up to 4 percent, he says.

“Our transaction fees have gotten out of hand, and we just can’t afford it,” says McCullough, who estimates that the average tire store pays $25,000 a year in card fees. “We try not to pass it on to the consumer, but when it gets that big, we have to pass it on to the consumer.” Revenue from the fees often is split among local banks, national banks and the credit card company.

When a credit card transaction occurs, the merchant receives money from its local bank for the purchase, usually the next day minus the fee. The local bank keeps about 15 percent of the fee and sends the rest to the card-issuing bank, which then pays a portion to the credit card company.

Steve Turkiewicz, president of the Montana Bankers Association, says he doesn’t know how much revenue Montana banks receive from credit card fees.

But he does say that credit cards have benefited Montana merchants, making it easier for them to accept payment from people all over the country and the world. The merchant gets paid the next day, and if there’s any fraud or nonpayment, the banks are on the hook.

As the economy has slowed the past two years, outstanding debts on credit cards have increased 10 percent he says.

If merchants are successful in getting Congress to reduce the interchange fees, there’s no guarantee that merchants will pass those savings along to customers, Turkiewicz added.

Sutey disagrees, and says all merchants want is a level playing field, giving them more power to negotiate or determine fees they see as excessive.

“We either accept their fees and accept their cards, or we don’t,” he says. “They say if they reduce the fees, we’ll just put the money in our pocket. I think they forget how competitive America is.” Dennison, Mike

Pro Debut of Kamil Laszczyk Rescheduled to March 4 in Woodhaven, NY

NORTH BERGEN, NJ (February 28, 2011) – The professional debut of six-time Polish national amateur champion Kamil Laszczyk has been rescheduled for this Friday night, March 4 at the Cordon Bleu Banquet Hall in Woodhaven, New York. The 19-year-old Laszczyk of North Bergen, NJ by way of Wroclaw, Poland is schedule to face Emil Brooks (0-2) of Buffalo, NY in the four-round super-featherweight undercard matchup.

Laszczyk was brought to America by the Global Boxing Foundation late last year after compiling a 110-7 amateur record. It’s a mark of his dedication that he has been living in the gym – literally. He is staying in an apartment complex adjacent to the Global Boxing Gym, which has kept him focused on his training. He is now promoted by Global Boxing Promotions and trained by Aroz “Terrific” Gist.

Laszczyk was scheduled to fight on the undercard of his stablemate Mariusz Wach’s third-round knockout of Jonathan Haggler earlier this month in Newark, NJ but the fight was canceled when his opponent failed to come in on weight.

“I’m happy that I can finally fight,” said the exclusively Polish-speaking Laszczyk through interpreter Kasia Niedzwiecka. “I’m training hard and I’m 100% prepared to give the fans my best performance.”

The show will be promoted by New Legend Boxing Promotions. The Cordon Bleu Banquet Hall is located at 96-01 Jamaica Avenue in Woodhaven, NY.

Immigration reform debate set for Senate floor.

Nation’s Cities Weekly March 27, 2006 | McGee, Jennifer Two weeks of debate on immigration reform is set to commence on the Senate floor this week. Earlier this year, Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist (R-Tenn.) stated that immigration reform will be top priority for the Senate in 2006. immigrationreformnewsnow.net immigration reform news

Comprehensive immigration reform is a key legislative priority for the National League of Cities in 2006 as well.

In February, Frist gave the Judiciary Committee an ultimatum to have a bill ready for debate on March 27 or he would bring his own enforcement-only bill to the Senate floor, which he did on March 16 as the Senate Judiciary Committee could not reach consensus on legislation. The Frist bill, S. 2454, addresses immigration reform from an enforcement-only perspective.

In response to S. 2454, the Senate Judiciary Committee staff is locked in negotiations to meet Frist’s March 27 deadline and craft a bill in a more comprehensive manner.

Up for discussion is a plan to address the dilemma of the 12 million undocumented workers residing in the United States. The committee is working on a plan that would create a guest worker program that would allow businesses in need of labor to hire foreign workers on a temporary basis.

Committee staff is also ironing out a proposal by Sens. John McCain (R-Ariz.) and Edward Kennedy (D-Mass.) that would enable the 12 million workers living in the country to apply for permanent residency.

To qualify, applicants would have to: 1) complete the employment requirement; 2) pay an additional $1,000 fine; 3) be admissible under immigration laws; 4) undergo a medical examination; 5) show proof of payment of taxes; 6) demonstrate knowledge of English and U.S. civics; 7) undergo criminal and security background checks; and 8) register for military selective service. here immigration reform news

The Judiciary Committee plan would go a step further and require these folks to line up behind the 3 million people who have already applied for green cards.

NLC supports tough enforcement of immigration laws, but also asks Congress to address immigration reform in a comprehensive manner. National Municipal Policy supports “a consistent and enforceable balance on the use of foreign labor to fill domestic needs.” Presently NLC policy does not address a path to citizenship for undocumented workers.

At this time, there is no viable proposal in the Senate that would mirror a proposal in H.R. 4437 that mandates that state and local police officers have the authority to enforce Federal immigration laws. NLC opposes this provision as it is an outright preemption of local laws. H.R. 2237 is the House immigration reform measure that narrowly passed last December.

The Senate is expected to debate immigration reform for two weeks.

Ruiz a Winner at San Manuel

Bantamweight prospect Michael Ruiz Jr. remained unbeaten with an impressive four-round unanimous decision victory over Daniel Modad at the San Manuel Indian Bingo & Casino in Highland, California this past Thursday.

Ruiz (7-0-1, 3 KOs) of Fresno, California was ready and raring to go when he got the short-notice assignment of Modad (2-4, 1 KO) of Tijuana, Baja California, Mexico. “They told me that I was fighting on Tuesday, but I have been ready,” says Ruiz. “I was ready just in case I got a call to fight. I tried to find out who he was, and found out he was a southpaw. So we just got ready for that.”

Despite not having much information on Modad entering the fight, Ruiz formulated a plan fit to his opposition during the bout. “He had really long arms, so every time he went to throw a hook, I stepped in with a jab and worked on the inside a lot,” explains Ruiz, who won by scores of 39-37 and 40-36 twice. “I worked on the inside because that is what we have been working on. I had him against the ropes multiple times. I was manipulating him, checking him and I was scoring a lot of points and hitting him with really good shots.”

The win comes three months after Ruiz last bout, a hard-fought draw with Jonathan Alcantara in Oakland, California. It was an off night for Ruiz last November, but the result helped motivate the young prospect as he waited for his next opportunity in the ring. “It felt wonderful to get back in there, because of what happened with the draw,” explains Ruiz. “I was training just to come back again. I want to fight so I can prove to people that I am better and that I am the best. I don’t want to fight for anything else. I just want to prove to people that I am good.”

Ruiz, who is promoted by Goossen Tutor Promotions and managed by Repo Ric, hopes to back in the ring sometime in March.

Rios Broke hand in Acosta title win

Dan Rafael of espn.com is reporting the newly crowned WBA Lightweight champion Brandon Rios broke his hand in his title winning effort against Miguel Acosta on Satuday night.

“He said he felt it crack and pop and he knew he had broken it but that he had to keep punching,” Cameon Dunkin, Rios’ manager said.

“He knew it was injured and he kept throwing it, that’s how much he wanted the fight,” Dunkin said.

“I said to Brandon, ‘Do you want to go the hospital and get that checked out and they’ll give you some painkillers,” Dunkin said. “He said, no, that he just wanted to go up upstairs to take a hot shower and get in bed. It was a rough fight. I said, ‘Your hand is broken.’ He said, ‘I’m alright, I just want to go to bed, I’m tired. I’ll get it checked out [Sunday].’”

“He’s going to be in a cast for awhile and I know how these things go,” Dunkin said. “I don’t see him fighting again for four to five months.”

Burgos obliterates Archuleta in 2

Former world title challenger Juan Carlos Burgos scored a second round stoppage over Frankie Archuleta in a scheduled ten round Featherweight fight at the Million Dollar Elm Casino in Tulsa, Oklahoma.

Burgos dropped Archuleta three times in the second round. The first was was with a big right that was followed up by a left. Archuleta’s legs were clearly gone after that but still he was dropped with a hard one-two combination and finally for a third time with a right hand.

The fight was called off at 2:33 of round two.

Burgos, 128 lbs of Tijuana, Mexico is now 26-1 with nineteen knockouts. Archuleta, 124 lbs of Albuquerque, NM is now 27-8-1

South African Isaac Chilemba survived two eighth round knockdowns to outlast previously undefeated Maxim Vlasov by winning a unanimous decision in a ten round Super Middleweight fight.

It was a close fight early with Chilemba using his jab with range and going to the body of Vlasov. Vlasov started picking up some steam in the middle rounds as he used his experience as he used his full arsenal of punches.

In round eight, Vlasov landed a perfect right hand that sent Chilemba to the canvas in the first thirty seconds of the round. Chilemba was dropped again as Vlasov landed a flurry of punches that was culminated by a right hand. Chilemba actually did well in the final moments of the round by jabbing and landing some solid right hands. Chilemba carried that momentum into round nine as again it was a long jab that was mixed in with some rights and a nice uppercut. The two fighters went for it in round ten with Chilemba getting the better of the action filled round.

Chilemba, 171 lbs of Johannesburg, South Africa won by scores of 96-92; 96-92 and 95-94 to go to 16-1. Vlasov, 170 lbs of Samara, Russia is now 19-1.

Simphiwe Vetyeta scored an impressive third round stoppage over former IBF Minimumweight champion Roberto Leyva in a scheduled six round Featherweight fight.

Vetyeta dominated the fight until he landed a perfect left to the body that sent Leyva down for the ten count at 2:32 of round three.

Vetyeta, 121 lbs of South Africa is now 22-1 with twelve knockouts. Leyva, 125 lbs of Puerto Rico is now 27-13-1.

Pascal reaches agreement with Michel; rematch with Hopkins on for May 21

Dan Rafael of espn.com is reporting that world light heavyweight champion Jean Pascal has reached an agreement with his promoter Yvon Michel which was the final minor hurdle to proceed with his May 21 rematch with former two-division champion and legend Bernard Hopkins

“We went to the bid because we had a deadline,” Michel said. “But Pascal has a minimum for each fight and a percentage [of profit]. We had to adjust the numbers for him to be happy, so we needed more time to come to the agreement, but there was never a doubt that he wanted to fight Hopkins again. There was never a doubt in our mind. He trusted us and his team. We just needed time. I already spoke to Richard and we will sit down and see the pros and the cons of where the show should be.”

“Irish” Micky Ward Special Guest for “Diamond Elite” event March 12 Martinez vs. Dzinziruk, Lee vs. McEwan at MGM Grand Arena at Foxwoods

NEW YORK, NY (Feb. 24, 2011) – “Irish” Micky Ward, more popular now than ever after the success of the Oscar-nominated movie about his life, The Fighter, has been invited by promoter Lou DiBella to be a special guest March 12 for the “Diamond Elite” event at the MGM Grand Arena at Foxwoods in Mashantucket, Connecticut.

World Boxing Council (“WBC”) Emeritus and The Ring Magazine middleweight champion, 2010 Fighter of the Year Sergio “Maravilla” Martinez (46-2-2, 25 KOs), takes on World Boxing Organization (“WBO”) junior middleweight champion, Sergiy “Razor” Dzinziruk (37-0, 23 KOs), in the 12-round main event for the vacant World Boxing Council Diamond middleweight title.

The chief supporting fight is “Celtic War,” pitting exciting middleweights Andy Lee (24-1, 18 KOs) of Ireland and Scotland’s Craig McEwan (19-0, 10 KOs), in a 10-round bout of ethnic rivalry with potential world title shot implications for the winner.

The Martinez vs. Dzinziruk and Lee vs. McEwan fights will be broadcast on HBO’s World Championship Boxing beginning at 10:30 pm ET / 7:30 pm PT.

Ward has many direct ties to the March 12 event. Here are the seven degrees of Micky Ward, in association with the “Diamond Elite” event, with quotes from the consensus 3-time Fight of the Year participant:

Lou DiBella: The last four fights of Ward’s career (2002-2003), including the famed Gatti-Ward trilogy, were by far his most lucrative with approximately $3-million in purse earnings. By no coincidence, Micky was promoted by DiBella Entertainment for the final four fights of his 18-year pro career. “Lou is a good guy and a man of his word. He promised to make me a lot of money and he did. And all we needed was a handshake deal.”

Sergio Martinez: The Boxing Writers Association of America (“BWAA”) will hold its annual awards dinner May 6 in Las Vegas. Martinez will receive its 2010 Fighter of the Year, named in honor of the great Sugar Ray Robinson, while Ward receives the 2011 James A. Farley Award for Honesty and Integrity in Boxing. “Sergio is a great fighter, one of the best in the world today. He’s also a good person.”

James “Buddy” McGirt: Ward got to know the former two-time world champion and 2002 Trainer of the Year, Buddy McGirt, up close and personal in 2002-2003 when McGirt trained Gatti for all three fights of their epic trilogy. “Buddy was a great trainer and great fighter himself. I’m still good friends with him today.” McGirt is Dzinziruk’s co-trainer.

Andy Lee: Besides the obvious “green” connection linking their Irish heritage, Ward was the color commentator for the PPV airing of Lee’s most dramatic knock-out on March 16, 2007, against former world champion Carl Daniels in The Theater at Madison Square Garden. “Andy is a good, stand-up boxer who has a lot of talent.”

Freddie Roach: Another BWAA recipient in May – third year in a row and fifth time overall as the Eddie Futch Trainer of the Year – Freddie Roach, like Ward, is a Massachusetts native. Ward’s first amateur match at the age of seven was against Freddie’s younger brother, Joey. “I’ve known Freddie my whole life. I never fought Freddie because he’s older than me. I never really thought back then that Freddie would become the trainer he is today.”

Foxwoods: Although Ward never boxed in MGM Grand Arena at Foxwoods, he did fight four times in different venues at Foxwoods, winning three times against Steve Quinonez, Louis Veader and Mark Fernandez. Micky lost in the Bingo Hall to Antonio Diaz by 10-round decision on HBO. “I have great memories of fighting at Foxwoods. It’s still one of my favorite places for boxing.”

HBO: Micky fought six times on HBO (three times vs. Gatti, Jesse James Leija, Diaz and Shea Neary). “My experiences on HBO were excellent. HBO was really good for me. Everything was great, from Larry Merchant to Jim Lampley, who were MC’s at my retirement party, to everybody else at HBO.”

“Diamond Elite: Martinez vs. Dzinziruk” will be presented by DiBella Entertainment in association with Gary Shaw Productions and Banner Promotions. Lee vs. McEwan will be presented by DiBella Entertainment in association with Golden Boy Promotions. Both bouts will be broadcast live on HBO’s World Championship Boxing beginning at 10:30 pm ET / 7:30 pm PT.

Tickets for “Diamond Elite: Martinez vs. Dzinziruk,” are priced at $450, $250, $125, $75, and $50 and on sale through the MGM Grand at Foxwoods box office. Tickets can be purchased online at www.mgmatfoxwoods.com, by calling the MGM Grand at Foxwoods at 1-866-646-0609, or in person at the MGM Grand at Foxwoods box office.

Undefeated Ruiz Added to Toney-Reed Undercard

Bantamweight prospect Michael Ruiz Jr. is a fighter. Ruiz was called on a Tuesday, weighed-in on a Wednesday and ready to fight tonight, on a Thursday. The who, what, where and when did not matter, Ruiz is ready to kick off his 2011 and keep his unbeaten run going against Rigoberto Casillas in a four-rounder at the San Manuel Indian Bingo & Casino in Highland, California.

Ruiz (6-0-1, 3 KOs) of Fresno, California turned pro just last April after a stellar amateur career and quickly racked up his first six wins, four of which came by knockout. In his last outing, Ruiz was held to a draw by Jonathan Alcantara on the Andre Ward-Sakio Bika undercard in Oakland, California.

Ruiz, who is promoted by Goossen Tutor Promotions and managed by Repo Ric, claimed silver at both the 2008 National PAL Championships and 2009 National Golden Gloves during his accomplished amateur campaign.

Casillas (2-4-1, 1 KO) of Tijuana, Baja California, Mexico is likely more experienced than his reported record indicates. Casillas reportedly turned pro in November of 2005, and then fought forty-fight veteran Alejandro Moreno in his second bout. More than likely some interim bouts went unreported out of Mexico. In his last bout, Casillas fought a full twelve-rounder in a majority decision defeat to Felipe Salguero in a failed attempt at the lightly-regarded World Boxing Federation Light Flyweight title.

Headlining the action tonight is multiple-division champion and future Hall of Famer James “Lights Out” Toney as he defends his IBA Heavyweight title against notorious tough guy Damon Reed in the “Fight Night in America” televised feature attraction. Additional bouts will air as time allows.

“Fight Night in America” is presented by Empire Sports and Entertainment and televised nationally on Fox Sports Net affiliates. Check your local listings.

Tickets for the event, priced at $40 and $70, are available online at Ticketmaster.com.

LIZ “GIRL-RILLA’’ CARMOUCHE TO REPLACE INJURED MIESHA TATE AGAINST CHAMPION MARLOES COENEN AT STRIKEFORCE IN COLUMBUS, OHIO, SATURDAY, MARCH 5, LIVE ON SHOWTIME®

NEW YORK (Feb. 23, 2011) – Undefeated Liz “Girl-Rilla’’ Carmouche (6-0) has replaced an injured Miesha Tate and will face STRIKEFORCE Women’s World Welterweight Champion Marloes Coenen on Saturday, March 5, at Nationwide Arena in Columbus, Ohio, live on SHOWTIME® (10 p.m. ET/PT, delayed on the West Coast).

Tate, the No. 1 contender at 135 pounds, was forced to withdraw after suffering a knee injury during training.

Carmouche, of San Diego, by way of Lafayette, La., will be making her third start for STRIKEFORCE on SHOWTIME. She is coming off an impressive third-round TKO (punches) over the more-experienced, hard-hitting Jan Finney on Nov. 19, 2010. Carmouche has only gone the distance once in her career.

In her debut on SHOWTIME, the 5-foot-5, 27-year-old Carmouche registered a unanimous decision over Colleen Schneider on Aug. 13, 2010, in a “reserve bout” in the STRIKEFORCE one night, single-elimination women’s 135-pound tournament, which was won by Tate.

A member of Team Hurricane Awesome, Carmouche lived many years in Okinawa, Japan, where her father was stationed in the Air Force. At the age of 20, she joined the Marine Corps where she spent more than five years and achieved the rank of Sergeant.

Carmouche’s stint in the Marines included three tours to Iraq. Unlike many women in the military, she was attached to a GRUNT unit, which she describes as ground fighting outside of the perimeter where the rest of the units are stationed. In Iraq, she began training in Mixed Martial Arts.

About STRIKEFORCE

STRIKEFORCE (www.strikeforce.com) is a world-class mixed martial arts cage fight promotion which, on Friday, March 10, 2006, made history with its “Shamrock vs. Gracie” event, the first sanctioned mixed martial arts fight card in California state history. The star-studded extravaganza, which pitted legendary champion Frank Shamrock against Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt Cesar Gracie at San Jose’s HP Pavilion, played host to a sold-out, record crowd of 18,265. Since 1995, STRIKEFORCE, sanctioned by ISKA, has been the exclusive provider of martial arts programming for ESPN and, after 12 years of success as a leading, world championship kickboxing promotion, the company unveiled its mixed martial arts (MMA) series with “Shamrock vs. Gracie.” In May 2008, West Coast Productions, the parent company of STRIKEFORCE, partnered with Silicon Valley Sports & Entertainment (SVS&E), an entity created in 2000 to oversee all business operation aspects of the San Jose Sharks and HP Pavilion at San Jose. In March 2009, STRIKEFORCE signed a multi-year agreement with SHOWTIME® to stage live events on the premium cable television network. The promotion has since also produced two live, primetime events on the CBS Television Network.

Atlantic City, NJ—Heavyweight Theron Johnson, of Chicago, IL, steps in against unbeaten Bryant Bye Bye Jennings, of Philadelphia, PA, in a scheduled six-round contest Saturday evening, Feb. 26, in the Grand Ballroom at Bally’s Atlantic City.

The show will be televised live by www.gofightlive.tv.
Johnson replaces Terrell Baby Bull Nelson, of Plainfield, NJ, who suffered a pinched nerve in his neck last week while sparring.

PAT “BAM BAM’’ HEALY DEALS LYLE “FANCY PANTS’’ BEERBOHM HIS FIRST LOSS IN MAIN EVENT ON STRIKEFORCE CHALLENGERS

CEDAR PARK, Texas (Feb. 19, 2011) – In a hotly contested fight, Pat “Bam Bam’’ Healy of Portland, Ore., registered a razor-thin, unanimous three-round decision over previously unbeaten Lyle “Fancy Pants” Beerbohm of Spokane, Wash., in the main event Friday on STRIKEFORCE Challengers at Cedar Park Center live on SHOWTIME®.

In other results on the televised portion of a STRIKEFORCE Challengers event presented by Rockstar Energy Drink: Carlo “Neo’’ Prater (26-10-1), of Houston, Texas, submitted Bryan Travers (14-3), of San Jose, Calif., with an anaconda choke at 38 seconds in the first round in a catchweight bout at 160 pounds, unbeaten lightweight Ryan Couture (2-0), of Las Vegas, the son of MMA legend Randy Couture, submitted (rear-naked choke) Houston’s Lee Higgins (2-1) at 4:41 in the third round; local favorite Ryan Larson (6-2), of Albuquerque, N.M., submitted (triangle choke) Erik Apple (10-3), of Orange County, Calif., at 3:14 of the second round in a welterweight (170 pounds) skirmish and David “Tarzan’’ Douglas (7-2) of Antioch, Calif., submitted (rear-naked choke) Austin fan favorite Nick “The Ghost’’ Gonzalez (16-9, 1 NC) at 1:05 in the first round.

The victorious Healy (25-18) won by the scores of 29-28 on the three judges’ scorecards while Beerbohm dropped to 15-1.

“He talked a lot of trash, but if he wants a rematch, I’ll give him one anytime,’’ said Healy, who pushed former STRIKEFORCE World Lightweight Champion Josh Thomson to the brink before losing his last start on June 26, 2010, on SHOWTIME.

“Beerbohm fought a good fight but I think I outworked and outhustled him. I’d like to fight the winner of the March 5 fight between Billy Evangelista and Jorge Masvidal.’’

A member of Team Quest, Healy has won four of his last five fights and seven of nine. In a 10-year career, he’s defeated several big-name, quality opponents including Paul “Semtex’’ Daley, Carlos Condit and Dan Hardy.

Beerbohm, who not only suffered his first pro defeat but first ever in Mixed Martial Arts – he was 8-0 as an amateur — felt he’d done enough to get his hand raised.

“I definitely thought I won,’’ he said. “I thought going into the third we’d each won a round, but I definitely thought I won that last round. I took the fight to him from the start. But that’s what happens when you let it go to the hands of the judges.’’

The quick victory ended a two-fight losing streak for Prater, who’d also dropped four out of five. He used his Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu to take down Travers, and moments later it was over.

“My record shows I’m not a perfect fighter, but when you’re down you get up,’’ Prater said. “This was a good win, I’ll get better off this fight, but I’ll be right back in the gym soon.’’

Travers had won seven of eight going in. A six-fight winning streak was snapped when he lost a decision to Healy on STRIKEFORCE Challengers on May 21, 2010, in Portland, Ore., on SHOWTIME.

Couture, who turned pro for STRIKEFORCE on Aug. 13, 2010, is one of the most promising prospects in MMA, but he had to work to get the victory against a game Higgins.

“It felt good to be in there,’’ Couture said, “but the guy was tough as nails. I’m real glad I was able to get him there at the end. For the most part I was happy with my standup and getting almost 15 minutes in there was good.’’

In a battle of wrestlers, the well-conditioned Larson controlled the action from the outset against Apple, who was competing for the first time since Nov. 20, 2009.

“I think the key was to come out fast and dictate the pace,’’ said Larson, a member of Relson Gracie Jiu-Jitsu Austin. “It’s like a dream come true to fight for STRIKEFORCE and to win in my hometown.’’

Tarzan, a member of Cesar Gracie Jiu-Jitsu, dominated en route to winning his seventh fight inside the distance. The Ghostbuster, Douglas was the aggressor from the outset. He dropped Gonzalez with an overhand right followed by a left hook at about the 0:35 mark. He continued the punishment until the referee stopped matters.

“I wanted to show my Jiu-Jitsu skills,’’ said Douglas after outclassing the more experienced, local fan favorite. “Everyone says they never see my Jiu-Jitsu so I wanted to showcase them to the crowd. I do what they tell me. I’ll fight anybody. I feel most comfortable at 155 pounds. When I’m healthy, no one can beat me.’’

In Friday’s non-televised bouts, Aaron Lan Franco (2-0), of Austin, TKO 1 (punches, 4:22) over Thomas Diagne (1-3), of San Jose, at 155 pounds and in an all-Austin affair, Drew Pendleton (3-0) submitted (guillotine choke) Dennis Dombrow (2-1) at 2:38 of the second round at 145 pounds.

Friday’s event will re-air as follows:

DAY CHANNEL

In a second world title fight, Marloes “Rumina’’ Coenen (18-4) risks her STRIKEFORCE lightweight title for a first time against No. 1-ranked 135-pound contender, Miesha “Takedown’’ Tate (11-2), of Tacoma, Wash. Also, American military hero Tim Kennedy (12-3) vs. Melvin “No Mercy’’ Manhoef (24-8-1), middleweights; and undefeated Billy Evangelista (11-0) vs. Jorge Masvidal (20-6), lightweights. The event, STRIKEFORCE’s first in the state of Ohio, will take place in conjunction with The Arnold Sports Festival, the nation’s largest health and fitness exposition founded by Arnold Schwarzenegger.

Guerrero wins easy decision over Findley

Fernando Guerrero remained undefeated by scoring a ten round unanimous decision over Derrick Findley in front of a packed house at the Wicomico Center in Salisbury, Maryland.

Guerrero was very effective with the jab which set up numerous straight lefts that kept the 5’6″ Findley out of range. Findley became discouraged and came forward but more often then not he would not throw punches. When he did throw he didint land many effective punches. In the meantime it was all Guerrero as he dominated from start to finish by winning by scores 100-90; 99-91 and 99-91.

Guerrero, 157 1/2 lbs of Salisbury, MD is now 21-0. Findley, 160 lbs of Gary, IN is now 17-5.

Now Welterweight Shawn Porter scored a ten round unanimous decision over Anges Adjaho.

Porter was a lot more active and landed some quick combinations. Ironically it may have been Adjaho who landed the more telling blows as he landed some perfect counter rights on five occasions but that was basically the only offense the he mounted as Porter was more consistent with his workrate over the ten ten round bout.

Porter, 144 lbs of Cleveland, OH won by scores of 99-91; 99-91 and 97-93 to remain perfect at 18-0. Adjaho, 146 lbs of Geneva, NY is now 17-5

Good looking nineteen year old Dominic Wade scored a four round unanimous decision over feisty Grover Young in a Super Middleweight bout featuring two undefeated fighters.

Wade was very active as he landed many hard combinations and Young showed good courage by taking and ocassionally giving back.

Wade, 165 1/2 lbs of Washington, DC won by scores of 40-36 on all cards to remain perfect at 10-0. Young, 166 1/2 lbs of Memphis, TN is now 4-1.

NORTH BERGEN, NJ (February 17, 2011) – The 6?7? “Polish Giant” Mariusz Wach (23-0, 11 KO) of North Bergen, NJ by way of Krakow, Poland will face his tallest task to date on February 19 when he meets 6?4? Jonathan Haggler (23-3, 18 KO) of Winston-Salem, NC at Essex County College in Newark, NJ. Wach, who represented Poland in the 2004 Olympics, is now trained by former three-time heavyweight champion Michael Moorer and will look to cut the hard-hitting southpaw Haggler down to size.

In the co-featured lightweight bout, Danny “Little Mac” McDermott of Jersey City, NJ will face Atlantic City’s Osnel Charles of Atlantic City, NJ. McDermott, 31, holds a record of 8-2 (3 KO) and is coming off New Jersey’s Fight of the Year last year. Charles, 26, with a record of 6-2, is coming off his career best win, a split-decision over Philadelphia, PA favorite Victor Vasquez.

In a four round featherweight matchup, debuting Kamil Laszczyk, 19, of Wroclaw, Poland will face 23-year-old Antonio Parker, 0-2, of Wilson, North Carolina.

In a four-round super-middleweight bout, Rafael Jastrzebski, 29, of Bydgoszcz, Poland will face 22-year-old Randy Campbell, 3-3 (2 KO) of Bowerston, OH.

Jastrzebski’s record of 3-6-1 (1 KO) is deceiving, as he was the victim of flagrant mismanagement early in his career. Now based in Atlantic City, NJ and trained by Bill Johnson and conditioning coach Sean Sutton, Jastrzebski is getting a second chance.

Newark-based middleweight Eddie Edmonds (1-1-1, 1 KO) will face Charles White (0-1) of Wilson, NC in a four round bout.

What the fighters had to say Wednesday:

LYLE BEERBOHM

“My ultimate goal is to become STRIKEFORCE world champion but my immediate goal is to get my hand raised and beat Pat Healy.

“This is going to be a fun, tough, hard fight that I expect will go everywhere. There’ll be stand-up, wrestling, a little but of everything. Pat is definitely an all-around great fighter who is coming off a great performance, but the bottom line is I want to win.

“This is a great matchup and I am very excited about fighting in my first main event for STRIKEFORCE on SHOWTIME. There are so many great, tough, talented fighters at 155 pounds in STRIKEFORCE. I’m looking to build off the fight Friday and show what I can do and show that I belong in that company.

“My time has come and I am really looking forward to the fight. l want that title shot.’’

CARLO PRATER

“I am very honored to be fighting for STRIKEFORCE on SHOWTIME. I remember fighting for STRIKEFORCE at the HP Pavilion (in San Jose, Calif.) before they started promoting MMA.

“This is going to be a great fight. Travers is a tough and durable and I know I need to be at my best. I’ve trained very hard. I want to make a statement and be around a long time.

“I want Travers to be at his best so when I win, I can say I beat him at his best.’’

LEE HIGGINS

“I’m really happy for this opportunity to fight on SHOWTIME and for STRIKEFORCE. For some people, this is a really big deal but, as a fighter, for me, this is just another fight.

“I can’t and won’t allow myself to get caught up in the hype of fighting a fighter with a very famous last name. Sure, there is extra motivation but I am not going to put any more pressure on myself.

“So, I have to treat this as just another fight. Besides, I’m fighting Ryan, not Randy. I’ve watched his tapes and broken them down. I’m ready to fight the fight. There is no pressure. If anything, the pressure is on Ryan.

“I’m looking forward to a great, exciting fight.’’

Golden Boy wins Hopkins – Pascal II purse bid

According to Dan Rafael of espn.com, Golden Boy Promotions won the purse bid to stage the anticipated rematch between World Light Heavyweight champion Jean Pascal and Bernard Hopkins that will take place on May 21st.

“(Pascal’s promoter) Yvon (Michel) could not come to an agreement with Pascal, so this means he will go back to Canada to meet with Pascal and try to work something out, but the plan is still for the fight to happen May 21 on HBO,” Golden Boy’s Richard Schaefer said. “I don’t know what Yvon offered to Pascal, but I know it was more than what he would be entitled to from the purse bid.”

“The potential sites I listed on my bid were Montreal, Quebec City, Las Vegas, Los Angeles or Philadelphia,” Schaefer said. “We want to see where we can maximize the revenues. Yvon is going back to Pascal to work out a deal. Bernard and Golden Boy, we have a deal, so we are ready to go.

“As Bernard has said, he is willing to go back to Canada, assuming that it’s neutral officials. Bernard was very impressed with the fan support he got in Quebec City. By the end of the night the crowd was cheering, ‘Hopkins! Hopkins!’ So he has no problem going back to Canada, but it has to be neutral officials. If not, the fight will take place in the United States.”

“I am convinced the fight will happen,” Schaefer said. “It’s the fight they both want and we already have television lined up and interest from venues. Yvon and Pascal couldn’t agree on a purse amount, so it went to a bid and now it is settled.”

VIDEO: STRIKEFORCE HEAVYWEIGHT GRAND PRIX HIGHLIGHTS

Segura – Calderon II is on for April 2 in Mexico

According to Dan Rafael of espn.com is reporting that a highly anticipated rematch between world Jr. Flyweight champion Giovanni Segura will take on former two division champion Ivan Calderon on April 2nd in Mexico.

Mexico’s Segura traveled to Calderon’s native Puerto Rico for the first fight on Aug. 28 and knocked Calderon out in the eighth round in one of the leading Fight of the Year candidates. He handed longtime champion Calderon his first defeat, unified alphabet belts and claimed the lineal championship of the 108-pound division.

“Now it will be different because I’m going to fight with better training and without injuries,” Calderon said Tuesday at a news conference in his hometown of Guaynabo to announce the bout, which will be televised on Integrated Sports pay-per-view in the United States. “We are working right now and no matter that the fight is in Mexico, I’m going to show my boxing, my movements to win this title again. I want to thank Segura for giving me this opportunity.”

Said Segura, “He gave me the opportunity and now we give him the same opportunity, but I’m going to the fight in the best condition to retain this title against a great boxer like Calderon.”

“I guess it’s the biggest fight for the most money for him,” said Richard Mota, Segura’s manager. “When you’re in the small weight classes there are not too many options. Giovani said, ‘He wants the rematch, I’ll give it to him.’ He knows he will struggle to make the weight, but he’ll give it to him. He said he could make the weight one more time. He really wanted to move up to 112, but this is the right fight. Everyone wants to see the rematch, and it’s the biggest money fight for him.

“I know we’re getting more money than Calderon and we got a good deal with the pay-per-view [upside] and all that. We couldn’t say no, so we’re going to do the rematch. We have nothing but respect for Calderon. He’s a great champion. He’s proven it. Giovani has nothing bad to say about Calderon. I know Giovani is very excited to come back to Mexico for a big fight like this. He’s training very hard. He’s already in shape. It’s just the weight. He’ll struggle a little bit.”

Huck to defend WBO Cruiserweight Title against Fragomeni on April 2

On April 2, Marco “Captain” Huck (31-1, 23 KOs) will return to the place where he celebrated the biggest success of his career. The 26-year-old will defend his WBO Cruiserweight Title at the Gerry Weber Stadium in Halle, Germany, taking on former WBC champion Giacobbe Fragomeni (27-3-1, 11 KOs). Back in August 2009, Huck wore down then-champion Victor Emilio Ramirez to clinch the WBO title. “I look forward to returning to Halle,” said Huck. “I have very special memories of the Gerry Weber Stadium. I will never forget the day I became world champion. The crowd was fantastic and I will put on another spectacular show on April 2.”

It will be a special homecoming for Huck, who now resides in Berlin but grew up in Bielefeld, just ten miles away from the venue. “I have a lot of fans in my old home city and I will make them happy,” he stated. Huck has already defended his title five times.

His coach Ulli Wegner expects another tough test. “Fragomeni is always on the front foot and makes a lot of pressure,” the eight-time German-coach-of-the-year said. “He will not give Marco a moment to rest. Once again, it will be a hard challenge but I am confident that Marco will leave the ring as the winner.”

THREE MORE EXCITING FIGHTS ROUND OUT STRIKEFORCE CHALLENGERS EVENT AT CEDAR PARK CENTER IN CEDAR PARK, TEX,, THIS FRIDAY, FEB. 18, LIVE ON SHOWTIME®

NEW YORK (Feb. 14, 2011) – Bryan Travers (14-2), of Bakersfield, Calif., takes on Carlo “Neo’’ Prater (25-10-1), of Bryan, Texas, at a catch weight of 160 pounds, Erik “Bad’’ Apple (10-2), of Laguna Niguel, Calif., will be opposed by local favorite Ryan Larson (5-2), of Austin, Texas, in a welterweight (170 pounds) skirmish and David “Tarzan’’ Douglas (5-2) of Antioch, Calif., takes on Austin fan favorite Nick “The Ghost’’ Gonzalez (16-8, 1 NC) at 150 pounds in featured bouts of a STRIKEFORCE Challengers fight card presented by Rockstar Energy Drink at Cedar Park Center in the Austin suburb of Cedar Park, Texas, this Friday, Feb. 18, live on SHOWTIME® at 11 p.m. ET/PT (delayed on the West Coast).

In the main event, unbeaten rising star Lyle “Fancy Pants” Beerbohm (15-0) of Spokane, Wash., takes on dangerous veteran Pat “Bam Bam’’ Healy (25-17) of St. Louis. Unbeaten lightweights Ryan Couture (1-0), of Las Vegas, the son of MMA legend Randy Couture, and Houston’s Lee Higgins (2-0) will clash in another televised fight.

Tickets for STRIKEFORCE’s third event in 21 days and second in the Lone Star State are on sale at Cedar Park Center ticket office, all Ticketmaster locations (800) 745-3000, Ticketmaster online (www.ticketmaster.com) and STRIKEFORCE’s official website (www.strikeforce.com).

The first non-televised, undercard fight will begin at 8 p.m. CT. Doors will open at 7:15 p.m.

The Californians, Travers, Apple and Douglas will be making their second starts on a STRIKEFORCE Challengers card while the Texans, Prater and Larson will be making their debuts for the San Jose, Calif.-based MMA promotion. Gonzalez will be fighting for STRIKEFORCE for a second time.

A winner in seven of his last eight, the 5-foot-10, 27-year-old Travers is a terrific wrestler who unanimously outpointed Rocky Johnson on Aug. 27, 2010. Travers’ six-fight winning streak was snapped in his outing before last by “Bam Bam’’ Healy, who won a decision during a Challengers event May 21, 2010, in Portland, Ore., on SHOWTIME. Travers’ most noteworthy triumph was a unanimous decision over former UFC and IFL vet John Gunderson in May ‘09.

Prater is an eight-year pro and former WEC title challenger. The 6-foot, 29-year-old, who’ll be looking to regain his winning ways in this one, was victorious in his initial 10 starts after turning pro in November ‘02. Last Sept. 10, Prater fought three times during a single-night tournament.

Apple is a skilled wrestler who is gigantic for the division. This will be the 6-footer’s first assignment since a second-round TKO loss (punches) to Bobby Voelker on STRIKEFORCE Challengers on Nov. 20, 2009, on SHOWTIME. In his outing before last, Apple submitted then-highly touted Matt Makowski on Sept. 26, 2008.

Larson, a product of Relson Gracie Jiu-Jitsu Austin, has won by first-round submission in all but one of his victories. A pro since Feb. 10, 2006, he split his two outings in 2010, winning by first-round submission (rear-naked choke) over Anthony Macias on Feb. 27, and losing by an identical result to Derrick Hantz in his last fight on Aug. 20.

Douglas, a member of Cesar Gracie Jiu-Jitsu, is a 5-foot-11 non-stop action fighter who has won five out of six, including a second-round TKO (punches) over Dominic Clark in a non-televised match on a STRIKEFORCE Challengers event last Oct. 22 in Fresno, Calif.

Douglas’ most memorable win came against Mongkhon Wiwasuk, aka Malaipet, a Lumpinee Stadium Muay Thai champ in Thailand and an extremely dangerous striker, on Sept. 26, 2008, at Santa Ynez, Calif. He rallied to triumph by third-round TKO (punches) in a brawl that featured numerous changes in momentum, exceeded all expectations and, for sheer excitement, was as good as it gets.

Gonzalez is vastly more experienced than Douglas and has fought, among others, former STRIKEFORCE World Lightweight Champion Josh Thomson (June 26, 2007, on the undercard of Shamrock-Baroni in San Jose) and Yves Edwards on July 26, 2008.

A winner by unanimous decision over Tim Snyder in his last start on Aug. 20, 2010, the 5-foot-6 Gonzalez is 2-0 with one No-Contest dating to August 2009.

The non-televised bouts will feature three promising fighters from Austin: Aaron Lan Franco

(1-0), of Austin, meets Thomas Diagne (1-2), of San Jose, at 155 pounds and in an all-Austin affair of unbeatens, Drew Pendleton (2-0) will go up against Dennis Dombrow (2-0) at 145.

VAUGHN JACKSON, MIKE JONES’ TRAINER, OVERCAME THE LOSS OF A YOUNG SON ON THE PATH TO LEADING OTHERS

Philadelphia, PA–Overcoming the loss of his 10-year-old son 12 years ago, Vaughn Jackson, Mike Jones’ trainer, has turned tragedy into inspiration with the help of family, faith and boxing.

Jackson is winding down his training with Jones, who meets Jesus Soto-Karass (a rematch of their Nov. 13 fight, which Jones won by majority decision) on Feb. 19 at the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas and on HBO’s Boxing After Dark.

“It was a devastating loss, the worst feeling a parent can ever have, “said the 41-year-old Jackson, whose first child, Vaughn Welcome Jackson, sustained a fatal vocal cord injury while playing by himself in his room in December, 1998.

“At age 8, he wanted to box, so I took him to Joe Frazier’s gym. We trained together and he built up a 16-0 amateur record,” said a reflective Jackson, who boxed briefly as a teenager but couldn’t dedicate himself to the sport because of the reality of having to work.

“I took a year or so off from going to the gym, but I started to go to church regularly during that time. In 2000, I started to go back to the gym. I thought my son would have wanted me to do and that’s what turned my life around.

“I then started to take another son, who was 9 (Jackson has five children), to the Joe Hand gym on a regular basis and by the time he was 11, he was No. 2 in the country. At that time, I started training three local amateur fighters (Rashiem Jefferson, Saaed Hawkins, Mike Colston). Jefferson and Hawkins made it to the semifinals of the 2004 Olympic Trials.

“I met Mike (Jones) after the trials from a mutual acquaintance, a female boxer, who recommended me as an-up-and-coming trainer. Mike was looking for a new trainer at that time before he turned pro. We knew of each other and when he came to visit me at the gym we hit it off.

“Mike had a lot of natural ability and I liked his style. I wanted to enhance his strengths and work on correcting his faults without taking away from his strengths.”

“My life has really turned around in the last 12 years with the help of my faith and family and being involved in boxing, my passion. But there is not a day that goes by that I don’t think of my son Vaughn. He’s my guardian angel who gives me spiritual lifts to this day. And I know he’ll be there on February 19.”

JACKSON ON THE JONES vs. SOTO-KARASS REMATCH

“We want to quiet all of the critics that have doubts in Mike since his first fight with Soto-Karass. Don’t judge a fighter from one off-night. Mike overcame a lot of adversity in that fight and still won. We want to win more clearly this time.”

“Mike made a mistake and he didn’t stick to his game plan. He shot his load in the second round but he believed, as I do, that he did enough to win the fight.”

“We know that Soto-Karass will come out like a raging bull in this fight. I want Mike to gradually break down Soto-Karass and slow him down so that Mike, the matador, will gore the bull and finish him off.”

####

Mike Jones vs. Jesus Soto-Karass rematch, co-promoted by Top Rank and Peltz Boxing Promotions, takes place on Saturday, Feb.19, at the Mandalay Bay Resort & Casino in Las Vegas. The 12-round title fight will be televised live on HBO beginning at 9:45 p.m. ET along with Fernando Montiel defending his bantamweight title against two-division champion Nonito Donaire.

OMAR SHEIKA, GARRETT WILSON MEET FOR USBA CRUISER TITLE IN APRIL 23 REMATCH AT CAESARS ATLANTIC CITY

Atlantic City, NJ—It took one year to nail down, but Omar Sheika, of Paterson, NJ, and Garrett Wilson, of Philadelphia, PA, meet for the second time when they collide in a scheduled 12-round contest Saturday evening, April 23, in the Palladium Ballroom at Caesars Atlantic City.

At stake, in addition to revenge for Wilson, will be the vacant United States Boxing Association (USBA) cruiserweight title. The first of seven fights begins at 7.30 p.m. in the 1,450-seat ballroom, the first time it has been used for boxing.

Sheika, 34, scored a fourth-round knockout over Wilson on Mar. 26, 2010, in Hamilton Township, NJ. Wilson, unknown at the time, started fast, won the first round, but played to the crowd, stood and danced between rounds in his corner, then slowly ran out of gas and ideas. The fight turned late in the second round when Sheika found his range and Wilson’s body. By the fourth, it was over.

After that, Skeika (30-10, 21 K0s) knocked out Jim Strohl, of Las Vegas, NV, again in Hamilton Township, then lost a 10-round decision to world-rated Romanian light-heavyweight Adrian Diaconu, in Montreal, Canada.

A pro since 1997, Sheika remains one of boxing’s most exciting fighters. He has wins over Simon Brown, Glen Johnson and James Butler and he fought for world titles four times as a super middleweight, losing to Joe Calzaghe, Eric Lucas, Jeff Lacy and Markus Beyer.

Sheika has been a popular performer on television and was in Fight-of-the-Year candidates with Scott Pemberton (twice) and Thomas Tate and he also boxed Roy Jones, Jr.

Though Sheika has been campaigning as a light-heavyweight, the rematch with Wilson will be at a catch-weight of 185 pounds.

Wilson, 28, calls himself the “Ultimate Warrior” for his willingness for take on the best any time, any place. He has come a long way since losing to Sheika.

Though he dropped a six-round decision in his next fight to lefty Julio Cesar Matthews, of Reading, PA, Wilson has been climbing the ladder.

He knocked out fellow-Philadelphian Reshawn Scott in one round, then held Andres Taylor, (then 16-1-1) to an eight-round draw in Taylor’s backyard of Johnstown, PA.

Wilson followed with his most impressive showing when he came from behind to knock out Aaron Williams, (then 20-2-1) in seven rounds in what was supposed to be a Mayfield Heights, OH, homecoming for Williams.
A pro less than three years, Wilson is 9-5-1, 4 K0s, and eager to stay in the fast lane.

Tickets priced at $50 and $75 are on sale at the offices of Peltz Boxing Promotions (215-765-0922) and all Ticketmaster outlets (800-736-1420). They also can be purchased online at www.peltzboxing.com and www.Ticketmaster.com.
