VIJENDER SINGH: “EVERY NATION NEEDS A HERO!”

Vinjander Singh
In 2009, Vijender Singh was officially the world’s number one amateur middleweight (AIBA rankings) and, a decade on, the Indian sensation expects to be sat on a similar perch in the professional arena.

Last month the sub-continent’s poster boy produced a sizzling display to stop Rochester foghorn Sonny Whiting in the third round of his paid bow at Manchester Arena and this Saturday at Dublin’s National Stadium he moves to the second rung of the ladder when he faces Nottingham’s undefeated Dean Gillen in a scheduled four rounder.

‘I’d done everything I wanted to do in the amateurs,’ says the humble six footer who medalled at the Asian Games, Commonwealth Games, World Seniors and 2008 Beijing Olympics.

‘I’ve no idea how many amateur contests I had or what my record was. I began boxing training in 1998 but didn’t have my first contest until 2001, when I was about 16.

‘But I’d already attended three Olympic Games and won a medal so decided to give my time and hard work to the pro game. It’s the right place for me.’

This June the part-time catwalk model who has already starred in Bollywood movies signed a professional deal with Queensberry Promotions and re-located to Manchester where local coach Lee Beard was commissioned to oversee his transformation between the codes.

‘I’ve always been a thinking boxer but professional boxing is a far more brutal sport and you must fight harder,’ says the Deputy Superintendent of Police in his native Haryana, northern India, who turned 30 last week.

‘Right now I’m focussed on learning a new process and it’s lovely. I spar three times a week and at the start I admit it was difficult. They hit me very hard!

‘No one is perfect. There’s technical adjustments to be made. Lee is a very good trainer who adds little techniques without making big changes. In particular, my footwork has needed to change. I can’t jump around the ring. That said, many pros I spar are not used to my movement. I’m also working hard to build endurance; spar six or seven rounds.’

Away from the gym, the easy-natured prospect has adjusted effortlessly to Mancunian culture, if not its climate!

‘Here, my life is very easy, solely about boxing; train, eat, sleep! The only downside is your damp weather. Right now, it’s a bit too chilly,’ he quips.

‘I stay in an apartment in central Manchester which is very convenient. I love the environment and enjoy the city. I go to the mall and watch Bollywood movies which I adore.

‘I also enjoy all sports and love the sporting culture in Britain. On weekends I love to watch the football or the rugby. I’ve not decided on City or United yet. I love all teams, all football.’

The stylish skilster has found fight followers to be as fervent as footie fans and he can’t wait to publically showcase his wares again in the Irish Republic’s capital on Saturday.

‘I spent one month in Dublin before the 2012 London Olympics and I’ve so many Twitter friends there. It’s going to be amazing and I can’t wait to put on a show,’ says Vijender who is married to software engineer Archana and has a two year old son.

‘Unlike in India, sports fans in the UK really know their boxing. If you box well, fight hard, they love you.

‘I’ve no big dreams just yet other than to keep doing my job, keep winning. Lots of Asians love Amir Khan. Every nation needs a hero. Hopefully I can be India’s.’

Watch Vijender’s fight on the ‘Second Coming’ bill from Dublin’s National Stadium this Saturday, live and exclusive on BoxNation, the Channel of Champions, from 5pm (Sky 437/490HD/Virgin 546/Talk Talk 415 or Livesport.TV).

SAUNDERS V LEE WINNER WILL BE A HOT PLAYER ON THE 160LB WORLD SCENE

billy-joe-saunders
The winner out of the WBO World Middleweight title showdown between the Champion Andy Lee and challenger Billy Joe Saunders on Saturday 19th December at the Manchester Arena will be hot property on the elite world boxing scene.

Division ruler Gennady Golovkin, the fearsome Kazakh who holds the IBF World, WBA Super World and WBC Interim World titles, will be targeting the missing belt from his collection, the WBO crown, to complete his mission in unifying all the belts.

The winner of Saunders-Lee could also meet the winner out of the massive WBC World Middleweight clash between Puerto Rican and Mexican rivals Miguel Cotto and Saul Alvarez on November 21 in Las Vegas in a world-title unification. Plus there’s another big fight in the division with WBA World Champion Daniel Jacobs defending his title against Peter Quillin, who Lee held to a draw in his last fight, on December 5 in New York. Both fights, plus Lee v Saunders, will be exclusively live on BoxNation.

American superstar and top pound-for-pounder Andre Ward, the reigning WBA Super World Super-Middleweight Champion, has also expressed an interest in the 160lb division and facing whoever emerges as the best in the blue-riband weight class.

With a division bursting with big name fighters and exciting big-money opportunities, Saunders know’s it’s crucial that he wins.

“I keep saying the fight between me and Lee is the most important fight in the middleweight division in recent years and it’s true,” Said the undefeated Hatfield ace.

“It looks like boxing’s elite will be watching with great interest the fight between me and Lee and more importantly who wins as it impacts on what they do in their careers,”

“This is what I’m in boxing for the big super-fights. Me and Lee is a super-fight, I absolute love it and I can’t wait for what lies ahead,”

“Listen, Lee is a great champion and I’m definitely not underestimating him and he’ll have my total focus, but how can you ignore the big fights that lie ahead for the winner? Surely that’s a massive golden carrot to aim for and put the pressure on you to fight to your best and win,”

“The winner out of me and Lee is going to be up there amongst the big names, Golovkin, Cotto and Alvarez and if Ward is looking at fighting at the weight then it’s another superstar name in the 160lb pot, it’s going to be a red hot time in the middleweight division in the next year or so that’s why I’m going all out to win on December 19 and get that belt around my waist.”

DORAN: I WANT BLACKWELL NEXT

Tom Doran has told Nick Blackwell he’s gunning for his British Middleweight title – after he sees off Rod Smith in an eliminator clash at the Echo Arena in Liverpool tomorrow night, live on Sky Sports.

Doran moved back into title contention in February when he landed the Prizefighter title in style in Blackpool, Craig Cunningham, Luke Keeler and Cello Renda. That win put him into the limelight and Doran says he has timed his run perfectly to take the title from Nick Blackwell in 2016.

“Nick Blackwell needs to get that Lonsdale belt polished for me,” said Doran. “I don’t think Blackwell’s amateur background was that extensive and I really fancied John Ryder to beat him back in May. I felt that Ryder would be too big and strong for him. Credit to Nick though, he dug in and stopped him. He’s getting better with each fight that passes and I’m relishing the opportunity to get in the ring with him – after I’ve dealt with Rod Smith of course.

“I’ve got the style to cruise the odd rounds with my boxing against Rod Smith – I haven’t watched much of him. He’s going to come at me all guns blazing, but from what I’ve heard he’s not a massive puncher – but my class will show and I’m confident I will outbox him.

“I believe that I had enough experience before I took a break from boxing for three years to go for a British title then. I didn’t though and I feel better for it experience-wise now. I feel that I’m maturing in and out of the ring – they are all big fights now.”

Doran’s clash with Smith is part of a massive night Merseyside as unbeaten Liverpool Super Middleweights Callum Smith and Rocky Fielding clash for the vacant British title.

Ricky Burns is on the trail of his old WBO Lightweight World crown and faces Aussie Josh King for the Inter-Continental strap, Scotty Cardle defends his British Lightweight title against local favourite Sean ‘Masher’ Dodd, unbeaten Lightweight talent Ohara Davies faces Chris Truman and Team GB star Warren Baister makes his pro debut.

Limited tickets are sale now from the Echo Arena website www.echoarena.com and on 0844 8000 400 – priced £40, £60, £80, £100 and £150.

Tickets for November 7 are available from http://www.stubhub.co.uk/matchroom-boxing-tickets/ – StubHub is the official ticket partner and marketplace of Matchroom Boxing and Anthony Joshua MBE.

FRANCIS WARREN: “VIJENDER SINGH WOULD ALREADY DRAW OVER 12,000 IN INDIA,”

Vinjander Singh
Expect Indian ring sensation Vijender Singh to further expand his already bulging fan club when he fights for the second time as a pro at Dublin’s National Stadium on Saturday.

After a sensational punch-perfect stoppage win on his debut last month, the hugely decorated ex amateur star fronts up to Nottingham’s unbeaten Dean Gillen over four rounds.

With over 20 million TV viewers from the sub-continent tuning into the middleweights three round mauling of Sonny Whiting at Manchester Arena, Singh clearly has the talent and background tale to evolve into a huge ‘crossover’ star right across the globe.

Born into poverty in Bhiwani, the 30 year old made the podium at the Asian Games, Commonwealth Games, World championships and in 2008, delivered India it’s only ever Olympic boxing medal when he struck bronze in Beijing.

Subsequently, the college graduate is currently a Deputy Superintendent of Police in his native Haryana and has moonlighted as a catwalk model, reality TV star and Bollywood actor back home but the time has dawned to expose him to Indian exiles further afield.

Presently, there are just under one and a half million Indians residing in the UK, with major communities in all of Britain’s leading fight cities such as London, Liverpool, Manchester, Liverpool, Cardiff, Glasgow and Belfast.

‘In addition to Saturday, we’ll be getting Vijender out again on our Manchester bill (December 19th). At the moment most of his learning and development are taking place in the gym,’ says Francis Warren from Queensberry Promotions who showcase his fights.

‘But by his fifth or sixth fight, we’ll be looking to put him on in some form of title fight – perhaps WBO Asian – before 20,000 at the Ghandi Stadium in Delhi. We’re confident he’d draw 12,000, if we put him on there now in a four rounder! And he’s eligible for the Commonwealth title so that would be a logical next step.

‘There’s huge demand back in India. Already Vijender has 1.5 million followers on his Face book fan page, looking at his videos. In India, cricket is obviously the number one sport, but its stars such as Sachin Tendulkar and MS Dhoni are team players. Vijender is an individual and kids love someone who stands out.

‘After becoming India’s only ever boxing medallist in Beijing, there was huge disappointment that he would not be a part of India’s Olympic team for 2016 but we’re going to help make him India’s first ever world boxing champion. He may be well mannered and softly spoken but he carries serious punching power at either middleweight or super-middle.’

FEATHERWEIGHT HOPE CIARAN McVARNOCK: “ONCE I START FIGHTING BOYS MY SIZE, I’LL REALLY START TO SHINE!”

Fast improving Belfast featherweight Ciaran McVarnock gets a rare but welcome opportunity to flaunt his talent on home turf tomorrow evening when he features in a four rounder on the monster ‘Second Coming’ bill at Dublin’s National Stadium.

The one time protégé of ex Commonwealth cruiserweight king Darren Corbett at the Sacred Heart ABC in Belfast will be hoping to extend his unbeaten run to six.

‘I usually box far away from home so this’ll be fantastic,’ says the humble 23 year old Ulsterman, known as ‘Bunty’, who is now schooled by ‘Arnie’ Farnell in Manchester.

‘There’s about 100 coming down from Belfast but I’m anticipating great support from all the Irish in the arena.’

The solitary blemish on Ciaran’s pro slate thus far occurred in his last gig when he tied over four rounds with Zaragoza’s Jose Acero in Marbella.

Since joining the paid ranks in February 2013, McVarnock has served an invaluable if painful apprenticeship as a chief spar hand to ex IBF bantam boss Paul Butler at Farnell’s Failsworth gym.

‘During our first spar, Paul dropped me for the first time in my life with a body shot,’ concedes Ciaran, who great uncle Eddie ‘Bunty’ Doran beat Scotland’s world flyweight champion Jackie Paterson back in the 1940s.

‘Paul’s hurt me since but has never put me down again. We usually don’t stand and trade. I love picking things up from sparring him or watching him; he’s so skilful with his head movement, shoulder rolls and footwork. He’s an absolute gentleman to boot.’

But now it’s time to start advancing his own career.

‘The busier I am, the quicker I’ll improve,’ he says.

‘I’m a featherweight but thus far just two of my opponents have been around 9st, 9st 2(lbs). The rest were much heavier. Once I start fighting boys my size I’ll really start to shine.

‘Next winter (2016), I’d like to be fighting for some form of title but I’m in no rush, one fight at a time. I’m still a novice, still learning every day. I’m certainly not at a stage to be calling fighters out.’

He knows a quality performance tomorrow is imperative if he’s to persuade the matchmakers to keep him active.

‘I hear the opponent is a bit of a survivor, hard to tag with a clean shot but hopefully, I’ll be able to show my boxing and skill….make ‘Arnie’ proud!’

Anthony ‘Arnie’ Farnell, the former WBU middleweight champion who has trained McVarnock for his entire pro career ,adds: ‘Ciaran McVarnock’s a real life ‘Rocky’ story,’

‘Putting it mildly, he weren’t the most talented when he first landed but, through hard work and determination, he’s just got better and better. He’s a top, top lad, quite shy but he’d do anything for anyone and he really wants to learn. He’s come on leaps and bounds sparring Butler.

‘When Ciaran first came to me he was an out and out scrapper. Now, if anything, he’s gone too far the other way. He’s using his brain too much!

‘He’s got more heart and determination than any fighter I’ve ever met. He’s so dedicated, he deserves everything he gets. If I told him to go for a 30 mile run after a brutal training session, trust me, he’d do it without a hint of complaint. He’ll go through walls and, because of that, he’ll get a lot out of his career.

‘Forget the blip in Spain last time. Even though it was short notice and he needed to lose a lot of weight, he comfortably beat a Spaniard in Spain but they called it a draw. All part of the learning curve.

‘Opportunities have been limited but now a businessman called John Blower has started to look after Ciaran and we expect him to really kick on. He just needs lots of fights now and we’ll get him there. Another two years and he’ll be knocking on the top ten.

‘I’d be very surprised and disappointed if he didn’t win the British title. He has the ability.’

Watch Ciaran’s fight on the ‘Second Coming’ bill from Dublin’s National Stadium this Saturday, live and exclusive on BoxNation, the Channel of Champions, from 5pm (Sky 437/490HD/Virgin 546/Talk Talk 415 or Livesport.TV). Join at www.boxnation.com

Since then, he has gone 4-0 with three KOs, defeating Misael Chacon and the tough Julio Sariana who sent him into the mat for the first time in his professional career. Most recently, Gonzalez was last seen decisioning over Darryl Hayes and stopping Luis Ruiz Lizarraga Jr. in two rounds in September. Now, Gonzalez is ready to please his fans in his fourth and first headlining appearance at LA FIGHT CLUB in Los Angeles.

Los Angeles super bantamweight Emilio Sanchez will step into his December 4 bout as the co-main event attraction, and it’s a responsibility the 21-year-old takes seriously. Making his professional debut in 2013, the undefeated Sanchez can do it all in the ring. Sanchez won his first three bouts in 2013 via first-round knockouts and has continued to impress through 2015. Given that his last four victories have taken place in the Belasco Theater, he will be right at home no matter who stands across the ring from him on fight night.

Unbeaten in eight pro bouts, local favorite Ivan “Striker” Delgado will open up the TV portion of the card in a six-round super featherweight matchup. The 25-year-old has had a big year in 2015, winning four bouts, including three LA FIGHT CLUB victories, most recently over Thomas Herrera in September. Delgado has stayed local, building up his name and reputation on the Southern California boxing circuit, including a win by unanimous decision against Angel Albelo at the Los Angeles Memorial Sports Arena on July 11.

Making his professional debut in March 2011, Jose “Flash” Bustos of Cuidad Juarez, Mexico, racked up seven victories in his home country. Bustos made his U.S. debut against Frank Santos De Alba in February 2015 where is lost by unanimous decision. His next three bouts proved difficult for the 24-year-old fighter, but Bustos is ready and seeks redemption when he faces Ivan Delgado next month at his LA FIGHT CLUB debut.

Hailing from San Antonio, Joshua Franco made his professional debut as a new Golden Boy fighter on the August 6 edition of the hit monthly series LA FIGHT CLUB defeating Temoatzin Landeros via split decision, and quickly followed up with a victory over Saul Hernandez at the October installment. In a six-round super flyweight bout, San Antonio’s Franco returns to the Belasco, looking to build on the two LA FIGHT CLUB bouts he has won since entering the pro ranks in 2015 after an impressive amateur career.

Growing his fan base with each successive victory, LA’s Nick Arce has yet to let an opponent hear the final bell, with four of those wins coming in 2015. The 19-year-old most recently defeated Juan Hernandez at the StubHub Center in Carson, Calif. on October 3 with an impressive fourth round knockout. The former amateur standout hopes to keep his streak going this December competing in a six-round super featherweight bout to end his year at the Belasco.

Teenage terror Pablo “The Shark” Rubio Jr. has already made waves since turning pro in June, knocking out two of his three opponents. The 18-year-old from Los Angeles, who has fought in the 2014 USA Boxing Junior and Youth Open in the youth lightweight class at 123 lbs. and has sparred with the likes of undefeated professional boxer Leo Santa Cruz, will be back at the Belasco Theater for his fourth appearance in a four-round super bantamweight bout on December 4.

LA FIGHT CLUB is a monthly boxing series that showcases the brightest stars in the sport and present these exciting matchups in a nightclub atmosphere with an original setup. The boxing ring is set on the main floor of the Belasco Theater with on-camera standing room for fans in front of the ring similar to a concert pit, as well as reserved balcony and floor seats. Los Angeles’ own DJ Ray of Big Boy’s Neighborhood spins music during the fights and fans are able to dance and mingle with the fighters when the venue converts into a night club, in a VIP experience not matched by any promoter in the industry.

Media interested in attending the December 4 installment of LA FIGHT CLUB must be pre-approved for credentials. Credential applications will be available soon. Completed credential applications should be sent to credentials@mercuryllc.com by 5 p.m. on Thursday, November 26. Media will not be credentialed on-site, no exceptions.

Matthews out, Arnfield in – Blackwell gets new British title challenger for November 14

LONDON (6 NOVEMBER) British middleweight champion Nick ‘Bang Bang’ Blackwell will now defend his title against Blackpool’s Jack Arnfield, following the withdrawal of original opponent Elliott Matthews, on November 14 at Bristol’s City Academy, subject to final approval from the British Boxing Board of Control.

Watford’s Matthews picked up a cut in sparring on Friday (November 6) and Arnfield, on stand-by for a number of weeks now, was quick to fill the void and grab the chance of a lifetime.

The 26-year-old has been a professional for eight years and has won 19 of 20 professional fights. Effectively unbeaten, his sole loss, over three rounds to Cello Renda, came in a 2015 Prizefighter tournament. That aside, though, he has comfortably beaten everybody in his path and claimed good wins over the likes of Max Maxwell and Mick Hall.

His last fight, an eight-round points win over Deividas Sajauka (a late replacement for Cello Renda, who was due to face Arnfield in a British title eliminator), took place on October 24. He has been in full training ever since.

*** For tickets to BANG BANG: Blackwell vs. Arnfield, please contact the Ticketline Box Office on 0844 888 4402, the Sanigar Events Box Office on 0117 949 6699 or visit www.hennessysports.com ***

MATCHROOM BOXING FOUNDATION BACKS GOLDEN GLOVES ABC IN LIVERPOOL

The Golden Gloves ABC in Liverpool received a £5,000 donation today as the first amateur boxing club to receive funding and support from the Matchroom Boxing Foundation.

Promoter Eddie Hearn stepped in with emergency funds in June when the club were forced out of the Toxteth-base it called home for 12 years through rising rents, but with this cash-injection and the keys for a new gym being collected on Tuesday, the future looks bright for the famed club.

Founded in 1947, the Golden Gloves ABC currently houses 30 male and female amateur fighters, and boasts products from 1972 Olympic bronze medallist George Turpin to current amateur stand-out Anthony Fowler, as well as opening its doors to over 30 recreational users from the city every night.

“The Matchroom Boxing Foundation’s financial help and support has saved this club,” said Golden Gloves ABC coach Wayne Smith. “The club is vital for the community and it means the world to some of the kids we have coming down. There’s some real talent in the club, but more than that, Golden Gloves gives them something to focus on and shows teaches them so much more about life than just how to throw a jab.

“In a couple of months’ time the gym will be ready to roll and we are all so excited to move into our new premises and as the first club to benefit from the Foundation, I hope that we can do some great things to show how important it is to back local boxing clubs.”

Hearn said that he intends to initially assist up to 20 clubs all over Britain through the Foundation, speaking of his desire to inject both money and expertise into the grassroots of the sport, and reach out to the government and councils to assist these important institutions.

“It is important to invest in all levels of the sport,” said Hearn. “We have the elite boxers in the country and we’ve brought many Team GB amateurs into the paid ranks, but I feel we have a responsibility now to help the grassroots of the game.

“We’re not just going to write cheques and walk away – the support is more than just financial, it’s equipment, tickets and perhaps most importantly, advice.

“The Golden Gloves ABC is just one of many clubs that is in need of help. The money is great but we are here to offer them advice to attract more support. The cash injection keeps the going in the short-term, but it’s the support that will see them grow and thrive.

“Wayne and the rest of the people at the club give up their time to keep the club going – without support, amateur clubs are just not viable businesses, and we need to look at them as businesses for them to survive.

“We’re going to push the government and councils to look at the role of boxing clubs in the community and get them to recognise the great and vital role they play. The Matchroom Boxing Foundation can only help to a certain level, so we are going to be working

“We have a problem in the UK with obesity in kids, and discipline and respect too – boxing can play a massive role in addressing these issues. There are World champion fighters all over the world that will tell you that without boxing, their lives would have gone down the wrong path, what we need to do is get the powers that be to recognise the work of the clubs and take measures to support and encourage them and more.”

SHAMROCK – GRACIE III

SANTA MONICA, CALIF. (November 6) – It’s a pairing that is synonymous with the sport of mixed martial arts — Ken Shamrock versus Royce Gracie — and Bellator MMA is pleased to bring these two pioneers together for a third time on Feb. 19 at Toyota Center in Houston, Texas at “Bellator 149: Shamrock vs. Gracie.”

While this mega-fight is more than enough to round out the latest tentpole offering from Scott Coker and company, everything is bigger in Texas and that’s why in addition to the aforementioned blockbuster main event, Kimbo Slice will meet the man who has been calling him out since the two parted ways years ago, Dhafir Harris, better known as “Dada 5000.”

Tickets for this MMA extravaganza start at $30 and go on sale Saturday, November 14 at Bellator.com, as well as HoustonToyotaCenter.com, Toyota Center Box Office and Houston area Randall’s locations.

Gracie is a living legend, considered by many as the Godfather of MMA. This iconic pioneer of the sport is returning to competition for the first time in almost a decade for the third fight in his trilogy against fellow MMA great Ken “The World’s Most Dangerous Man” Shamrock.

Since returning to action earlier this year, Shamrock has made it clear that his present MMA run is about closing the book on longstanding feuds and solidifying his place as one of the sports all-time greats.

The two great warriors fought twice before in their illustrious careers, with Gracie defeating Shamrock in November 1993 via submission and then later in April of 1995, when the two fought to draw in an unforgettable 36-minute bout.

Kimbo Slice’s meteoric rise to fame from Miami street fighter to wildly popular MMA fighter is legendary. After his triumphant victory at the record-breaking “Bellator 138: Unfinished Business” event in June, Slice returns to action with more than merely victory on his mind.

Harris, a childhood friend and former bodyguard of Kimbo, also gained acclaim from his promotion and participation in the rugged world of street fighting. The story of the South Florida-resident was brought to the forefront of the combat sports world recently in the documentary entitled “Dawg Fight.”

Now, the two former street warriors are set to write the final chapter of their beef in front of millions of people worldwide as Dada 5000 takes his prodigious brawling skills to the Bellator MMA cage against Kimbo Slice.

You won’t want to miss “Bellator 149: Shamrock vs. Gracie” on Feb. 19. With not one, but two main events airing live and free on Spike, the latest and greatest from Bellator MMA promises to close the book on two very different rivalries.

BOXING’S MOST INFLUENTIAL WOMEN TO “STAY GOLDEN” AT RAGING BABE BRUNCH

LAS VEGAS – November 5, 2015 – In less than three weeks, fight fans and boxing’s top industry talents from all over the world will descend on the “Boxing Capital of the World” for the highly anticipated clash between Saul “Canelo” Alvarez and Miguel Cotto. On the morning of the November 21st showdown, boxing’s brightest and most influential women will gather for brunch at Mandalay Bay to honor Golden Boy Promotions’ Vice President of Operations, Monica Sears. This year’s event, dubbed “Stay Golden,” will continue the long-standing Raging Babe tradition of hosting events that are exclusive, powerful platforms for building personal and professional relationships between boxing businesswomen.

This year’s Raging Babe Brunch, the sixth such event, will be hosted by “Raging Babe” Michelle Rosado, and “The First Lady of Boxing,” Jackie Kallen. This year’s honoree, the multi-talented Monica Sears, first began her journey with Golden Boy Promotions in 2007 as a Public Relations Coordinator. She quickly established herself as the go-to person for the company, its fighters, television, venue and sponsorship partners, and media. In 2010, she was promoted to Director of Communications and Events. It was in this role that she earned accolades for her “in the trenches,” all-encompassing style of producing boxing events. If she wasn’t accommodating or credentialing media at an event, she was backstage, in the ring, advising a camera operator of the best angle… In short, she was everywhere. In 2013, she was promoted to her current role of Vice President of Operations for the boxing powerhouse. Said Eric Gomez, Golden Boy Promotions’ Sr. Vice President of Sears, “I am very proud of Monica and her development as a promoter. In my opinion she is the hardest working woman in boxing. It is a pleasure to have her on our team.”

Past Raging Babe event honorees have included Jackie Kallen, Public Relations ace Kelly Swanson, TV trailblazer Claudia Trejos, Nevada Boxing Hall of Fame Chief Operating Officer Michelle Corrales-Lewis, and, most recently, heart transplant recipient and the epitome of a “Raging Babe,” Kennedy Cunningham. “The Raging Babe Brunch and other events have far exceeded any expectations I had when I conceived this idea of bringing women together to network and share their experiences and triumphs as women in the boxing industry,” said Michelle Rosado. “Lifetime friendships and business partnerships have been forged at previous events, and Stay Golden will be no different. It’s a pleasure to have the opportunity to honor Monica Sears, and I’m thrilled to see the event continue to grow and be successful.”

Rosado mentor Jackie Kallen, who has been an enduring presence at Raging Babe events, will be on hand to co-host the event. “I couldn’t be happier to step into the role of co-host at this valuable event,” said Kallen. “I am thrilled to see both Raging Babe the company, and ‘Raging Babe’ Michelle Rosado continue to bring women together to move forward in a productive way in the boxing industry. Monica Sears is the perfect honoree for this occasion, given the magnitude of that weekend’s fights, and the many others she produced.”

This year’s event is made possible by the generous support of the World Boxing Council and Youth Fighting Forward, a New York-based non-profit organization dedicated to creating champions inside and outside the ring. Youth Fighting Forward has branches in Brooklyn and in Danbury, Connecticut.

Figueroa to meet DeMarco in battle for former Lightweight champs

Omar_Figueroa
According to Dan Rafael of espn.com, Former Lightweight beltholders Omar Figueroa and Antonio DeMarco will meet on December 12 in San Antonio and be televised on NBC.

“I’m excited to once again be fighting in my home state of Texas, in front of my fans who know what to expect from me,” said Figueroa, 25, who is from Weslaco. “I’m going to fight smart, it’s going to be exciting and I will slowly break down DeMarco and give the fans and myself a win.

“I can box straightforward and also trade fire with fire. As we say in Spanish, ‘Si, se puede.’ Yes, we can. I am ready to get in the ring, risk it all and be the man who wins. Don’t miss it.”

“This will be a very tough fight and will most likely be a war because of our fighting styles,” DeMarco said. “I will do everything I can to give a great show and a great fight. My objective is to win.”

Also announced for the card were a pair of 10-round heavyweight fights: 2012 U.S. Olympian Dominic Breazeale (16-0, 14 KOs) taking on Charles Martin (22-0-1, 20 KOs) and former two-time world title challenger Chris Arreola (36-4-1, 31 KOs) facing Travis Kauffman (30-1, 22 KOs).

“Charles Martin has nowhere near the experience I have. It’s like night and day,” said Breazeale, 30, of Alhambra, California. “I do everything better than him and am in much better condition. I’m looking to end 2015 with a bang and get ready to kick off my 2016 campaign in style. I want to move toward challenging for a world title.”

Said Martin, 29, of Carson, California: “I know Dominic very well and have a lot of respect for him, so I know it’s going to be a tough fight. This fight is about two of the best young heavyweights in the world fighting each other. I won’t let anything stand in my way of becoming heavyweight champion.”

“I’ve known Kauffman for a long time, and very well, but once the bell rings, it’s time to go to work,” Arreola said. “I’m a beast when I’m in great shape, and that’s what I will be for this fight. I haven’t fought in San Antonio, but I look forward to fighting in front of the loyal Mexican-American boxing fans.”

“This is a fight that I’ve been wanting,” Kauffman said. “I know how tough Chris is and how great his desire to win is. This is my toughest test to date, but it is my time to shine. I believe that I will be a world champion and to do that I have to win this fight.”

MIKE “HOLLYWOOD” JIMENEZ COMES HOME TO CHICAGO ON NOVEMBER 25TH

CHICAGO — November 5, 2015 — One of Chicago’s favorite sons, Mike “Hollywood” Jimenez, returns to the Windy City on November 25th in the main event at Fight Night at the Horseshoe, the popular Hitz Boxing fight series, where he will compete for the NABA Super Middleweight and the WBC Continental Americas Super Middleweight titles. Jimenez is coming off of a spectacular knockout win over Argentinian Francisco Ramon Benitez, a fight that earned Jimenez the UBF All-American Super Middleweight title. Jimenez’s fight with Benitez, which took place in Victoria, Australia, put Jimenez back in the win column after he suffered a highly-questionable stoppage versus Jesse Hart on the undercard of Mayweather-Pacquiao in May.

“It was a good opportunity for me to fight away from home, and be in a different realm,” said Jimenez of his last two fights. “It was good experience to fight around a different fan base where you don’t have the whole house going for you. You’re away from home, you don’t know anybody. It’s just you and the guy across the ring from you.”

Jimenez didn’t let the change in venue get into his head. “My mentality stays the same. I’m there to do one job – to take the guy out. At the end of the day, that’s really the only thing on my mind. Getting the win.”

Fighting away from home gave Jimenez a new appreciation for fighting in front of his friends, family and fans. “It means a great deal to me to come home to Chicago,” said Jimenez of his upcoming fight. “I have a little bounce in my step because the fights away from home are tough. Coming home, having all your friends, family, and the city behind me…it’s pretty exciting for me. More than anything I want to give them a good showing. I want to give them a big victory, and show my appreciation for everyone back home.”

Promoter Bobby Hitz expressed pride and excitement at “Hollywood’s” return. “We’re excited to have him back,” said Hitz. “I think it shows a lot of what he’s made of, how he rebounded so quickly, went halfway around the world and fought a tough fight to pick up that title. He didn’t sit and ponder what happened to him in the Jesse Hart fight. He just got back on his horse, went to a different country, a different part of the world, and won a tough fight over there. I’m excited to have him back home. Myself, the Chicago boxing community, Chicago’s boxing fans are eager to see him back in the ring at home.”

Doors to The Venue at Horseshoe Hammond open at 6:00 Wednesday, November 25th, and first bell is at 6:30. Tickets are priced $90 and 40, and are available at all Ticketmaster outlets. Boxing fans must be 21 years and older to attend events at the Horseshoe Hammond.

BOXNATION TO SHOW JACOBS VS QUILLIN WORLD TITLE CLASH LIVE ON DECEMBER 5TH AS RACE FOR MIDDLEWEIGHT TOP SPOT HOTS UP ON ‘THE CHANNEL OF CHAMPIONS’

Daniel Jacobs
LONDON (5 November) – BoxNation will air yet another of the middleweight division’s most intriguing clashes exclusively live when WBA champion Daniel Jacobs puts his world title on the line against the undefeated Peter Quillin on December 5th.

The race to prove who is the undisputed number one in the 160-pound division is set to become a lot clearer by the end of the year, with BoxNation to show every significant matchup exclusively live on ‘The Channel of Champions’.

After having screened knockout king Gennady Golovkin’s demolition job over the brave David Lemieux last month, BoxNation has even more treats in store for fight fans with Miguel Cotto’s WBC clash with Mexican icon Canelo Alvarez live on November 21st and WBO champion Andy Lee’s blockbuster matchup with Billy Joe Saunders on December 19th.

Those two battles will play their part in giving some transparency to the middleweight division, with the inspirational Jacobs and former WBO champion Quillin’s meeting at the Barclays Center in New York clearing the picture up further as we go into 2016.

28-year-old Jacobs, who has only lost once in 31 fights, with a highly impressive 27 knockouts along the way, battled his way back from bone cancer to claim his world title stopping Jarrod Fletcher in the fifth round last August.

The New York native has successfully defended his belt two times since, but against the 32-year-old Quillin he faces a former world champion who is unbeaten in 33 matchups and is aware he will have to be at his best as they battle in Brooklyn.

“There is no doubt this is going to be one of the biggest fights Brooklyn has ever seen,” said Jacobs. “Peter and I go back a long time, but this is business. I’m the champion and he’s the challenger. I’m going to do everything I can to win on December 5th and show the world that I’m the best Brooklyn has to offer.”

“This fight means everything to me. It’s two guys for the battle of Brooklyn,” said Quillin. “We are both going to have great support in the building and this fight will really inspire people. In New York City you never get to see two guys at this level of boxing square off against one another. It means a lot and I’m very excited about this fight.”

With Golovkin having emerged victorious from his fight the next three middleweight matchups, exclusively live on BoxNation, represent a mouth-watering round robin to see who can rightly call themselves the very best at the weight.

Jim McMunn, Managing Director at BoxNation, said: “It is a really exciting time in the middleweight division and we are delighted to be able to bring boxing fans all the action exclusively live on the channel. BoxNation subscribers won’t miss a moment as we deliver the biggest and best matchups to close the year. The Daniel Jacobs and Peter Quillin clash is a welcome addition to a bustling, value-for-money, BoxNation schedule which will have fans on the edge of their seats.”
