Angel Luna Added to Oct. 23rd ShoBox Card in Phoenix

Brooklyn, N.Y. (Friday, Oct. 9, 2015) – Ronson Frank’s Uprising Promotions officially announced on Friday that Angel Luna (11-1-1, 6 KOs) has been added to the October 23rd ShoBox: The New Generation card at the Celebrity Theater in Phoenix, facing undefeated Filipino lightweight Harmonito Dela Torre (16-0, 11 KOs). Luna joins Uprising Promotions stablemate Samuel Clarkson (16-3, 10 KOs) on the show, where the Texas native will face Lavarn Harvell (15-1, 8 KOs) in light heavyweight action.

Luna enters the bout on October 23rd after an impressive win over Jose Lopez, who was previously undefeated in 16 fights before meeting him. That bout occurred at Barclays Center in June on the Miguel Cotto vs. Daniel Geale undercard, with Luna flooring Lopez twice as he cruised to a six-round unanimous decision.

“I am happy to see Angel receive another good opportunity like this,” said Ronson Frank, President of Uprising Promotions. “He is a guy who always stays in the gym, and he has continued to work hard since his win over Jose Lopez. In this fight with Dela Torre, he has a tall and lanky opponent who can punch, but I know Angel is up for the challenge. We are going to pressure this guy and see what he has because Angel is someone who always puts his best foot forward. If he is able to do that in this fight, we are going to come away with the win.”

Luna returns to the ring on October 23rd for the fourth time in 2015. Trained by Mateo De La Cruz and Frank, Luna fought his first nine professional bouts in his native country of the Dominican Republic before signing to Uprising Promotions. The Brooklyn transplant joined the promotion in 2014 and will fight under its banner for the sixth time when he faces Dela Torre.

Dela Torre will be making his American debut on October 23rd, with all 16 of his previous professional bouts occurring in Asia. 14 of those outings have happened in his native country of the Philippines, while the other two went down in China.

After Luna faces Dela Torre, Uprising Promotions will make a second appearance on the ShoBox card when Samuel Clarkson meets once-beaten Lavarn Harvell. The bout will be his second appearance on ShoBox this year, with his last time being a third round TKO of highly regarded prospect Jerry Odom in July. Clarkson has since picked up his third straight stoppage win via a first round TKO of Rayford Johnson in August, which was his sixth overall victory of the past year. In addition to the Odom win, that streak also includes a decision over former world title challenger Cedric Agnew.

Brant vs. Rose:
The 5-foot-11½-inch Brant, who turned 25 on Oct. 2, was the 2010 National Golden Gloves champion at 178 pounds and was a member of the U.S. national boxing team. He has won all 17 of his fights since turning pro in 2012, including the last five in a row by knockout. He scored a third-round TKO over Lekan Byfield in his last fight on Aug. 28. Brant currently trains in Dallas alongside top prospect Errol Spence Jr.

The 5-foot-11-inch Rose, is 26 years old and a pro since November 2011. He has beaten six undefeated fighters and is 8-1-1 in his last 10 fights. The lone loss came against highly regarded, unbeaten (and 2011 world amateur champion and 2012 Ukrainian Olympian) Ievgen Khytrov on Nov. 21, 2014. Rose has won his last two outings including an upset sixth-round TKO over previously undefeated prospect Milorad Zizic (11-0 going in) on March 13 and in his most recent outing, a highlight-reel, last-minute eighth-round TKO over Andrew Hernandez on Aug. 15.

Dela Torre vs. Luna:
Dela Torre, a 5-foot-7½-inch, 21-year-old, is considered one of the most promising young talents in the Philippines. After an amateur career that featured 47 wins with 40 KOs and membership on the Philippine national amateur boxing team, Dela Torre turned professional at the age of 17 in January 2012. He recently relocated to Las Vegas, and will be fighting outside of Asia for the first time. Dela Torre has stayed active in the ring, fighting six times in 2012, five times in 2013, three times in 2014, and this will be his third fight this year. In his last fight on June 7, he recorded his sixth consecutive knockout on a fourth-round stoppage over Eusebio Baluarte.

Luna returns to the ring for the fourth time in 2015, having beat Jose Lopez in his most recent bout on June 6 by unanimous decision. Luna fought his first eight professional matches in his native Dominican Republic, winning five by knockout. In his U.S. debut on May 21, 2014, Luna notched a second-round knockout over Joey Arroyo. The 5-foot-5 inch junior lightweight prospect suffered his lone defeat against prospect Tevin Farmer in his second to last bout on April 17.

Miller vs. Muralimov:
Miller, 27, stands six-foot-four inches and has an impressive physique with fast and powerful hands. The former New York Golden Gloves finalist was born and raised in Brooklyn and made his professional debut in July 2009, notching a first-round knockout. This is Miller’s fifth fight of 2015. He won his last three fights by knockout, all within the first two rounds, including a first- round knockout of Excell Holmes in his most recent bout on June 2. While Miller is now fully focused on his boxing career, he comes from an MMA and kickboxing background, having competed 10 times on an international level. Miller has sparred extensively with Heavyweight Champion Wladimir Klitschko.

The 27-year-old Muralimov, who was born in Uzbekistan but now lives and trains in Houston, had an impressive amateur career with over 150 fights and world championships at three different divisions. Muralimov suffered the only loss of his career on Feb. 14 via 10-round unanimous decision to tough veteran Derric Rossy. Miller will be just the second undefeated fighter that Muralimov has faced and looks to be his toughest opponent to date. Prior to his loss to Rossy, Muralimov recorded six knockouts in his last eight bouts.

Harvell vs. Clarkson:
Harvell is a 27 year old from the Ventnor Heights section of Atlantic City who has fought sporadically since turning professional in February 2008 (although this will be his third fight this year and he appears to be approaching top form). Harvell has won two in a row since suffering his lone defeat in his 14th fight by a shocking, upset six-round decision to big underdog Edgar Perez on June 14, 2014. In his last bout on Aug. 22, Harvell defeated Quincy Minor by first-round knockout.

The 6-foot-1-inch 25-year-old Clarkson continues to perform with a strong urgency after he’d been mostly dismissed as a legitimate prospect after three disappointing losses on his record. Having since focused on growing as a fighter inside the ring and as a person outside of it, Clarkson has developed a unique blend of speed, power and confidence. He stamped himself as a super middleweight prospect to watch in his ShoBox debut two outings ago when he produced a stunning third-round TKO over hard-hitting, highly regarded Jerry Odom on July 17. In his most recent scrap, he scored a 1:30, first-round knockout over outclassed Rayford Johnson on Aug. 28. Clarkson is a two-time Texas Golden Gloves State Champion and Police Athletic League National Champion at 175 pounds.

Barry Tompkins will call the ShoBox action from ringside with Steve Farhood and former world champion Raul Marquez serving as expert analysts. The executive producer is Gordon Hall with Richard Gaughan producing and Rick Phillips directing.

On fight night, doors open at 5 p.m. and the action starts at 6 p.m. The Celebrity Theatre is located at 440 N 32nd Street in Phoenix, AZ. VITALY BIGDASH IS CROWNED NEW ONE MIDDLEWEIGHT WORLD CHAMPION PLUS: ADRIAN PANG DEFEATS PETER DAVIS BY SPECTACULAR KNOCKOUT EV TING EMERGED VICTORIOUS BY SUBMITTING HONORIO BANARIO ALSO: IRINA MAZEPA SHOCKS ANN OSMAN

9 October 2015 – Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia: The largest sports media property in Asian history, ONE Championship™ (ONE), in partnership with Tune Talk, delivered yet another evening of world-class mixed martial arts action. The world’s most exciting MMA organization rocked Stadium Putra with 11 electrifying bouts at ONE: TIGERS OF ASIA. In the main event, Vitaly Bigdash shocked former champion Igor Svirid to nab the middleweight title.

In an intense main event showdown of elite middleweights, Russia’s Vitaly Bigdash weathered an early storm from former champion Igor Svirid of Kazakhstan to win via referee stoppage. Svirid stormed the gates at the opening bell, rocking Bigdash with huge bombs which staggered the Russian on numerous occasions. Bigdash however survived the onslaught and finished off Svirid a few minutes into the second round with a knee and a punch combination, followed by hammer fists on the ground.

“I know he is a very good fighter, a strong fighter, but I just wanted to go with the flow,” said Bigdash. With the victory, Bigdash is crowned the new ONE Middleweight World Champion.

In the Malaysia Super Fights, Ev Ting took home a victory for Malaysia while both Ann Osman and Peter Davis fell short in their respective bouts.

Irina Mazepa surprised the partisan Malaysian crowd with an upset win over Malaysia’s fighting belle, Ann “Athena” Osman. Osman looked to employ her usual grinding style to contain Mazepa, a former kickboxing champion. However, Mazepa prepared well for Osman’s ground game and quickly worked her way back up to the feet. In the stand-up, Mazepa flashed her solid striking skills, dropping Osman with a left hook followed by hammer fists from the top.

Ev Ting had little trouble taking care of Team Lakay’s Honorio Banario, finishing the Filipino via Guillotine Choke just moments into the first round. Banario opted to shoot for takedowns instead of relying on his Wushu base which proved to be his downfall. Ting capitalized on a missed shot by Banario and sunk in a deep choke to force the tap.

Adrian Pang made quick work of Peter Davis in a sizzling lightweight contest. Pang patiently stood his ground against Davis who circled him just outside of range. Once Davis attempted to close the gap however, Pang’s power shots took over as he dropped Davis with a punch. Pang then finished his opponent off with follow-up strikes from the top.

Featherweight standout Eric “The Natural” Kelly of the Philippines returned to the ONE Cage victoriously with a unanimous decision over Hiroshige Tanaka of Japan. Kelly, known for his technical submission game, showcased ferocious striking skills, battering Tanaka from end to end. Tanaka used his world-class wrestling to control Kelly, but the Filipino did more damage which earned the judges’ nod.

Riku Shibuya of Japan dominated Filipino Eugene Toquero from start to finish to win by unanimous decision. The two were expected to delight the crowd with a highly-anticipated striking battle, but Shibuya overwhelmed Toquero on the mat with his wrestling and devastating ground and pound. Toquero had difficulty shaking off Shibuya, who controlled the fight the entire way.

Korea’s Dae Hwan Kim made a successful return to the ONE Cage with a submission finish over China’s Teng Li Ge. In the first round, Teng kept Kim at bay with his long reach and solid stand-up game. Teng was also able to fend off a late submission attempt by Kim. In the second round, Kim found a way to get inside of Teng’s reach, locking in a one-armed Rear Naked Choke to force Teng to tap.

In a fantastic flyweight bout, Malaysian MMA hero Gianni Subba showed impressive takedown defense in a unanimous decision victory against Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu master Almiro Barros. Subba staved off constant attempts for takedowns by Barros. On the feet, Subba took the slight edge by landing cleaner, stronger blows.

Former Malaysian Invasion Mixed Martial Arts (MIMMA) featherweight champion Keanu Subba overcame a determined Florian Garel to claim victory by referee stoppage due to strikes with only a few seconds left to go in the first round of Subba’s ONE Championship debut.

In the second bout of the night, two Malaysian stars battled inside the ONE Cage. In the second round it was Saiful Merican who emerged victorious with a technical knockout victory over countryman Melvin Yeoh.

Agilan “Alligator” Thani of Malaysia kicked off ONE: TIGERS OF ASIA in spectacular fashion with a first round submission victory over Hisham Hiba, forcing the Egyptian to tap just a few minutes into the bout.

Battle of the bangers as Kalenga v Bolonti is signed for Monte Carlo (Nov 7)

Johannesburg, October 9 – Former world title challengers Youri Kalenga and Roberto Bolonti will do battle in a cruiserweight 10-rounder on the undercard of the Monte Carlo “Night of Champions” tournament on November 7.
The card is topped by WBA light-heavyweight champion Juergen Braehmer’s title defence against Tommy Oosthuizen.
It will be Kalenga’s second fight in Monaco, having beaten fellow contender Mateusz Masternak in the principality last year.

Kalenga (21-2, 14 KOs) is fresh off a brave challenge for the WBA title against Denis Lebedev, pushing the Russian all the way in his Moscow back yard before dropping a decision.
Argentina’s Bolonti (36-4, 25 KOs) is a rugged campaigner who has moved up a division since a fruitful run at light-heavyweight where he fought big names like Jean Pascal, Braehmer and Tony Bellew.
In his first fight at cruiserweight, against former WBA light-heavyweight champion Danny Green in August, he proved a resilient foe, Green saying, “He’s a very hard, very tough man . . . he’s an ox.”
With just three defeats in the past nine years, all by decision, Bolonti is one of the toughest fighters around.
A former prison guard, “La Bestia” says he is trying to emulate countrymen Lucas Matthysse, Marcos Maidana and Sergio Martinez in becoming a world champion.
Nicknamed “El Toro” (“The Bull”) on account of his aggressive style, WBA number eight Kalenga is a fighter in the traditional sense, but against both Masternak and Lebedev he demonstrated useful skills as well, proving that he can box if he must.
His power is above average, as fans saw when he put Lebedev on the canvas in the fourth round of their fight six months ago.
Kalenga, of the Democratic Republic of Congo but based in France for the past five years, enjoys top sparring against the like of former heavyweight title challenger Johann Duhaupas and contender Carlos Takam.
“I’m thrilled to add this fight to the bill,” said promoter Rodney Berman. “Kalenga surprised me when he fought in Monte Carlo last time . . . I had no idea he was that accomplished. And I watched Bolonti’s last fight on tape. He looked very good against a tough guy in Danny Green. Both guys can punch, so I’m expecting a humdinger.”
Berman also revealed that Venezuelan Charlie Navarro’s welterweight fight against David Avanesyan (20-1-1, 10 KOs) of Russia had been elevated to WBA Interim title status. Navarro (25-7, 20 KOs) is ranked 11th and Avanesyan 12th by the WBA.

The company is presently in conversation with top broadcasters worldwide to ensure that the November 7 telecast can be seen by sports fans everywhere.

See here what the participants had to say Wednesday:

DANNY O’CONNOR

“This is all about me fighting the process. Gabriel Bracero beat me but I really beat myself. Just like training for this fight, we had a baby son. Two weeks before our first fight, my first son was born and I didn’t know how to separate sport from such life-changing events. I was 14-0 and fighting on Showtime. We just had a baby boy two weeks before this fight. I want to prove to myself that I can beat this process. Bracero is my redemption!

“This fight is me vs. me. The time was right for this fight. I was offered this fight five times during the past few years but the time wasn’t right.

“I was a scared little kid with no experience in our first fight. I couldn’t handle the pressure, I didn’t even know it was there. Now, I’m a mature man who is a husband and father. I’m a totally different person.

“This fight could be in my living room. I’m at peace in the ring doing what I love to do. It’s great being back in the ring in Lowell, where I won the New England Golden Gloves title and I’m fighting on national TV, but the event is between the four corners and that’s what really counts.”

GABRIEL BRACERO

“I’m excited. I’ve trained for this fight like I’ve never fought Danny before. I beat him but that was four years ago. I can’t overlook him. He has obviously made improvements and I did also to get where we are today.

“I’m more experienced. I moved to train in Orlando and get away from distractions. I hit a few bumps and got incarcerated. Tommy Gallagher (trainer) saved my lie. He was there when I went to prison and there when I got out. I added a new trainer to our corner, Alexander Lopes, but Tommy and my father, Kiro, are still there. Tommy gives the orders and he likes what Lopez has done with me.

“Tommy Gallagher is my guardian angel. He believed in me more than I believed in myself. He had this vision before I did.

“Danny has become a better fighter. I can’t take anything away from him, but I’m looking forward to putting on a spectacular performance Saturday night.”

JONATHAN GUZMAN

“I’m going to make it 20-for-20, yes! I’m powerful because I make strong moves. My left hook is my best punch. I can feel the power through my entire body when I hit somebody right.

“I don’t worry about my opponent or what he’s done in the past.

“Lawrence is my home now. I will go back to the Dominican Republic in December for the holidays. I feel like a Bostonian. This is the sixth fight I’ve trained here for and I love the Boston Red Sox.”

DANNY AQUINO

“My last fight propelled me (upset by decision over Ryan Kielczweski). It made me more confident in myself. My last fight was on ESPN and this one is on NBCSN.

“I don’t know too much about my opponent other than he has power that I’ll be looking out for. A win over him should put me in the top 10 and that’s why I’m so motivated for this fight.

“I won the New England Golden Gloves championship in Lowell Memorial Auditorium in 2007.

“I train hard and I’m always in good enough shape to beat anybody.”

RYAN KIELCZWESKI

“I like fighting at home and this is one of my favorite venues. I won the New England Golden Gloves there twice.

“I’ve trained for this to be the toughest fight of my career.

“(Vasquez) is tough with a lot of power. He’s going come forward, but I’ll be able to out-box him.

“He’s rated in the top 10 of the world and a win should put me back in the top 10 fighting for a world title within the next year.”

RAFAEL VASQUEZ

“This is a great opportunity for me. I think this fight will put me on the map fighting on national TV and showing fans what I’ve got.

“I’m a hungry, small fighter determined to win. I fight for my wife, Sandra, who has stage-four cancer and my eight-year-old daughter, Kaline, who has autism. It’s not just me fighting in the ring, it’s the Vasquez family. With God’s grace, anything is possible.

“Ryan moves a lot. He uses the ring and boxes. He lost to Aquino and I know he’ll be coming back to prove himself. ”

GARY “SPIKE” O’SULLIVAN

“Boston is my second home. I love it here. The people are so nice and there are good gyms.

“I’m an exciting, entertaining fighter who always comes to fight.

“After I finish off Eubanks, I’ll be the No. 1 contender in the WBA and Golovkin can’t hold me off any longer.

“I watched a few clips of my opponent. We have identical records. We both knock people out, so I have to be careful. I’d like to get in a few rounds, but when I hit people, they fall.”

STEPHEN ORMOND

“My first four fights were here in the US. Boston is like my second home. The people are so nice. Boston is a real fight city. I can’t wait for these people to see me in the ring.

“I saw my opponent fight last year in Boston. He’s an experienced guy with a lot of fights. He fought for a world title a long time ago.

“With Ken Casey behind me, an impressive victory will get me a title shot. I’ll take any of them. I was one fight away, losing a qualifier. My grandmother passed away the day of my fight. I’m ready now!”

JAMES DEGALE & LUCIAN BUTE TWO-CITY, TWO-COUNTRY KICKOFF PRESS CONFERENCE QUOTES & PHOTOS FOR NOV. 28 SHOWDOWN ON SHOWTIME®

lucian-bute
NEW YORK (Oct. 8, 2015) – Super middleweight world champion James DeGale (21-1, 14 KOs), of England, and former world champion Lucian Bute (32-2, 25 KOs), of Montreal, completed a two-city, two-country kickoff press conference Thursday in London to formally announce their Nov. 28 showdown in the main event of SHOWTIME CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING® live on SHOWTIME from the Vidéotron Centre of Quebec City. There also was a press conference Tuesday in Quebec City.

The event, billed as “THE RECLAMATION”, is a presentation of Vidéotron in collaboration with Mise-O-Jeu.

In the SHOWTIME CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING co-feature, No. 2 IBF light heavyweight Artur Beterbiev (9-0, 9 KOs), a former two-time Russian Olympian living in Montreal, will face an opponent to be announced.

SHOWTIME Sports® will also televise the light heavyweight world title eliminator between the WBC’s No. 1-ranked 175 pound fighter Isaac Chilemba (24-2-2, 10 KOs), of Malawi, and No. 2-ranked Eleider Alvarez (18-0, 10 KOs), a former Colombian Olympian who now lives in Montreal. The winner earns the right to become the mandatory challenger for WBC Light Heavyweight World Champion Adonis Stevenson.

Chilemba, who is based in South Africa, has won four consecutive fights, including a 10-round decision over Vasily Lepikhin in his last outing last March 14 in Montreal.

The Montreal-based Alvarez has fought all but one of his 18 pro fights in Canada. He’s coming off a 12-round decision over Isidro Ranoni in a WBC Silver 175-pound title fight last Aug. 15 in Montreal.

Below is what DeGale and Bute and the executives had to say on Tuesday at the Videotron Centre in Quebec City and Thursday at Arsenal’s Emirates Stadium in London:

JAMES DEGALE
“I am excited to face an elite fighter like Lucian, who was champion for five years.

“He is still a good boxer and he told me he wants the belt back. But trust me; I am too young, too fresh and just too good.

“The way I’m feeling, mentally and physically, I’m in fantastic shape. It’s going to be very hard to beat me.

“My journey is only just starting, his is about to end in November.

“The way I am training, nobody will beat me. You can see my character just by the fact I accepted to come here and take that fight. Be ready for a furious and spectacular fight.

“There is no one in this division who can beat me. I’m willing to box anyone. I want to fight all the big fighters in the biggest fights.”

LUCIAN BUTE
“I am really happy to be back in Quebec City. Some of my best memories are here. I won four fights here. Six years ago, Nov. 28, 2009, the same day I will fight James DeGale, I knocked out Librado Andrade. And I also defeated Glen Johnson in Quebec City.

“DeGale is a great champion, but to come here to face me in my hometown, in front of 15,000 people, it won’t be easy for him. I am the challenger, I am the underdog, and he is the champion, but the pressure is on him.

“The past is in the past. I feel fresh. I have a new team and different people behind me. This opportunity is huge for me.

“I had the belt for five years and on Nov. 28, I will be the new world champion. I am very confident about this.

“I dealt with this when I faced Carl Froch in England.

“My dream is to regain my world title. I always believe in myself and in my tools. The belt will remain in Quebec.”

HOWARD GRANT (Bute’s head trainer)
“My job is simple: I have to prepare Lucian to win the title. British fighters were always dominant in the 160-pound and 168-pound divisions.

“DeGale is explosive, he won at the Olympic Games in 2008, and a World Championship in the United States, but that won’t work Nov. 28.”

JIM MCDONNELL (DeGale’s head trainer)
“James is different. He did everything on the rough path: being an Olympic champion, winning the British title in his ninth fight and becoming world champion in the United States. The more pressure he has, the better he is.

“I never knew anybody like him before. He can’t be intimidated. James respects Bute, but they say when you win a title, you get better. It will be frightening.”

JEAN BÉDARD
“It’s going to be a fun night. I have two great defining moments in my 10 years in the boxing world. The first one was Oct. 19, 2007, when Lucian became world champion live on TVA (Quebec TV channel) and Nov. 28, 2009, in front of a jam-packed crowd of 16,000 fans at the Québec Coliseum when Lucian beat Librado Andrade. Now, six years later, we are ready for a historic date.”

YVON MICHEL
“No champion in Quebec’s boxing history ever regained a world title after losing it. The task will be hard because DeGale is very skilled and brave. He won his title in the United States, far from his home. Still, we root for Lucian Bute 100 percent. We have a 12,000-seat stadium configuration in the brand new Vidéotron Centre and we had already brought more people before for some of Lucian’s fights. We are convinced that Quebec’s boxing fans will also root for Lucian.”

Tickets will go on sale this Saturday, October 10 at the Vidéotron Centre box office, on www.ticketmaster.ca, at GYM (514) 383-0666, at InterBox (450) 645-1077 or at Champion boxing club (514) 376-0980.

GENNADY GOLOVKIN VS. DAVID LEMIEUX FINAL MEDIA CONFERENCE CALL TRANSCRIPT

Gennady Golovkin (208x138)
BERNIE BAHRMASEL: Thank you. Welcome to the international media conference call for Gennady Golovkin and David Lemieux. We are ten days away from the Middleweight World Championship Title Unification at the Mecca of Boxing, Madison Square Garden, featuring the WBA, IBO and WBC “Interim” Middleweight World Champion, Gennady “GGG” Golovkin versus IBF Middleweight World Champion, David Lemieux.

This past Saturday night HBO’s outstanding Road to Golovkin-Lemieux premiered. This coming Saturday night at 11:20 ET/PT, HBO’s epic face-off featuring Max Kellerman, Gennady Golovkin, David Lemieux, Abel Sanchez and Marc Ramsey will premiere.

The Pay-Per-View is Saturday, October 17th, 9 p.m. Eastern Time, 6 p.m. Pacific, live, produced and distributed by HBO. Thanks to the media across the world for their continued support of this event. We will have a full fight week media schedule to be distributed later this week, and we look forward to seeing media around the world next week in New York City at the world’s most famous arena.

The first part of the call will have Tom Loeffler, Oscar De La Hoya, Abel Sanchez and Gennady Golovkin. The second part we will also have Oscar, David Lemieux, Marc Ramsey and Camille Estephan.

At this time it is my pleasure to introduce Tom Loeffler, the managing director of K2 Promotions.

TOM LOEFFLER: Thanks, Bernie. We couldn’t be more excited about this promotion. Ever since we announced the fight, the title unification fight between the two biggest punchers in the Middleweight Division. That was back in July, and the momentum has grown. I have to give Oscar and his company, Golden Boy Promotions and the entire Lemieux team a lot of credit for accepting the fight with Gennady Golovkin. It’s a true middleweight unification fight. It’s going to be in a sold-out arena at Madison Square Garden. Madison Square Garden has been very supportive of this event. HBO Pay-Per-View has been very supportive of the event, and the numbers are very optimistic on the Pay-Per-View side.

We had a very successful media training day yesterday with Gennady at the Wild Card West Boxing Gym and Brian Viloria was there also. It’s a tremendous co-feature with Chocolatito Gonzalez versus Brian Viloria. And with that, I would like to bring on our co-promoter on the event, Oscar De La Hoya.

OSCAR DE LA HOYA: Thank you very much, Tom. I would also like to thank Tom and K2 Promotions and Gennady Golovkin for taking this match-up. Obviously this is a match-up that a lot of people across the globe are salivating about.

You have two punchers, two fighters who are gladiators, are warriors, and have great knockout punching power. This is one fight that the whole world is excited about. So thank you very much to Gennady Golovkin for taking this huge chance against David Lemieux.

I’m pleased today to call ahead, and name this an epic showdown that will surely be “bombs away” between Gennady Golovkin and David Lemieux on Saturday, October 17th, live from Madison Square Garden, live on HBO Pay-Per-View. HBO is the best network to watch boxing, so I know you will have a phenomenal telecast, and, trust me, you will get your money’s worth. IBF Middleweight World Champion, David Lemieux has an impressive record of 34 wins with 2 losses and 31 knockouts. I watched him train in Montreal recently, and let me tell you he is looking incredible. He is looking sharp, he is looking fast, he is looking strong and eager to get inside the ring with “GGG.”

David Lemieux and Gennady Golovkin represent what I feel is the next generation of talented champion fighters of our sport. I mean for the fans, obviously this is very exciting. These guys don’t hold back in the ring, which means guaranteed action from the first bell. The fans are the real winners here October 17th, and I cannot wait for this event, and obviously we’re extremely proud to be working alongside Tom and his team at K2 Promotions, so thank you very much.

TOM LOEFFLER: With that, just to add on to what Oscar said, it’s two champions coming into the ring, both putting their titles on the line, and that’s what the fans have responded to. As Oscar said many times, the best fighting the best and that’s what the fans and the media want to see. The Pay-Per-View is priced very reasonably at $49.95. We had a great response from the “Road To” show that aired last Saturday, and the “Face-Off” is going to air this Saturday, and that’s actually a unique format, where it’s not only the two fighters facing off but also the two trainers, Marc Ramsey is the strategist behind David Lemieux, and David has been undefeated since he’s been working with Marc. Abel Sanchez really has laid out the whole blueprint for Gennady’s “Mexican” style and the transition that he’s made with the professional style which has allowed him to get 20 knockouts in a row. So with that being said, I want to bring on the phone Abel Sanchez from his training camp in Big Bear Lake, California.

ABEL SANCHEZ: Good morning, everybody. We are extremely happy to be part of this epic event. I think it’s about time that promoters and managers and fighters put their records on the line, put their belt on the line, and the best fight the best, and I’m glad that Tom is the kind of promoter for Gennady that’s going to endorse everybody and Oscar being the same way, so we’re finally going to see a fight that the fans have been waiting to see, the kind of fight that the fans have been waiting to see.

We are looking forward to the 17th. I know Marc is going to have David very ready; Gennady is going to be ready, and like Oscar said, it’s going to be “bombs away.” So we are looking forward to an explosive fight, for as long as it lasts.

TOM LOEFFLER: With that, I would like to bring on the phone the WBA/IBO and WBC “Interim” Middleweight Champion, Gennady “GGG” Golovkin.

GENNADY GOLOVKIN: Good morning, everybody. I have great strength, and I feel good. I’m ready for October 17th. I think we are ready for a good event. Good show, good event, you know, not just one fight.. Thank to you my coach, Abel Sanchez and thank you to my team, K2 Promotions. This is a big deal. This is a big thing for us, for boxing fans, for people and for our sport of boxing. Thank you.

Q. Good day everybody. I’ve got a question, I think probably primarily for Abel. We are talking about a very offensive, aggressive fight, but what kind of defensive instruction have you given to Gennady or have you worked on defense for this fight?

ABEL SANCHEZ: I think it’s important to point out that the HBO CompuBox system, Gennady is the third-best defensive fighter with 10 or more fights. Ward, Canelo a lot of those guys are behind him, so when it comes to defense, I think he is pretty adept at it. We have worked on all of the aspects of training, just because we have a force in front of us. We have David Lemieux, who is a strong puncher and an aggressive kind of fighter, come forward, so we work on all aspects of it, to make sure that we are ready for whatever David brings.

Q. Would you like to see Gennady recognized a little more for that defensive skill? I think that ranking would surprise a lot of fans.

ABEL SANCHEZ: No, it doesn’t really matter to me if he’s recognized for it or not, as long as the fans enjoy his style of fighting. I think this fight has done so well at the box office and his numbers on HBO have done well, hopefully the Pay-Per-View does well because of that, because of his style because of his aggressive style and David’s also. That’s what the fans want to see. The fans want to go back to those days, those yesterdays of great fights, where the guys just, with intelligence and with defensive skills fight great fights and they sit in the middle of the ring and go at each other. I think that’s what this fight is going to represent, and that’s what’s going to happen.

Q. Gennady, as Abel was talking about, we know that your defense is maybe a little bit underrated. We all know about your great knockout streak and your offense. David Lemieux is also known for having offense. I would like to know from Gennady, does he think more about the power that Lemieux has or the fact that he has been knocked out in the past and therefore he thinks it will be a big difference of him able to get to Lemieux’s chin. In other words, is there one thing he’s more interested in, protecting his own chin from his punching power or looking to go get him because he’s shown the fact that he hasn’t been able to maybe take the best punch previously. I would like Gennady’s thoughts about that.

GENNADY GOLOVKIN: No, you’re right, same power, same defense, same style, yeah, you’re right. I think different style of boxing class, and boxing IQ.

Q. Will you be able to take his punch better than he will be able to take your punch?

GENNADY GOLOVKIN: Yeah, I think we both have great punch. David is strong, too. I know my power, so it’s not just power, just a little bit different class, you know, boxing class, timing, speed, discipline, and this is very important for us.

Q. Abel, could you weigh in on that?

ABEL SANCHEZ: What he’s trying to say is I think he is the fighter in the fight. They both have power and speed and great knockout records but the IQ, the boxing IQ will be the difference, because I think he thinks that it’s a different class, as far as that part of it, and he will be able to get to David, because he will figure him out, but David can punch so it’s not like it’s going to be an easy fight. So both of them have punching power, but the IQ is higher in the sense of boxing wise.

Q. Understood. Gennady, one of the reasons why there have been some bigger-named fighters who haven’t really been interested to fight you at this point, they say, yeah, Gennady, he’s not that well known, he doesn’t bring a lot to the table, and I look at the way this promotion is going the expectations for this fight, the way that your television ratings have been on HBO, and then I see you in this major commercial on TV with the Apple Watch. Seems to me people can’t say Gennady Golovkin doesn’t bring anything to the table anymore. Can you address that? You seem to have crossed over to a certain degree where now it will become worth while for people to fight you because there will be riches involved in that.

GENNADY GOLOVKIN: You know, I am a boxer. You know, thanks to my promoter. I know David is a champion too. This is a big deal for us. This is my first Pay-Per-View.

Q. Tom, could you address that, people can’t run from him because there is no money?

TOM LOEFFLER: Dan, I think that excuse was not valid anymore over a year ago, I mean, when Gennady sold out the Stub Hub Center, when he had over 12,000 people at The Forum. People used that excuse in the past of a reason why it didn’t make sense to fight Gennady, but you see with this promotion and with the dance partner, with Gennady having a marketable opponent with him, who is another champion, I mean, that brings this to a whole different level, and that’s what we’ve always said is the marketability for Gennady, and you touched on the Apple commercial campaign that we did with Gennady that debuted on Monday Night Football, and we got a tremendous reaction. He’s just a marketable fighter and a likeable fighter, and David Lemieux is also very marketable, very popular as a champion as well, so it’s just the chemistry of the promotion and the two champions fighting each other that’s taken this to a completely different level.

Q. Tom, one thing very quickly, by the way. I certainly know who Gennady is, and boxing fans and other boxing writers know who Gennady is but they didn’t identify him in the commercial. Any particular reason for that? There might be some people who don’t know him; they saw it but they’re not sure who it is.

TOM LOEFFLER: They’ve done five or six different spots with different people in different segments so they haven’t — they didn’t distinguish the people, the individuals on the commercial campaign, but they definitely have on the Apple web site. They have identified who is in each segment. That’s how they’ve identified the people.

Q. Abel, everybody improves as they go along, and I understand that. In 2011 Lemieux lost to Marco Antonio Rubio and Joachim Alcine Just how dangerous is David Lemieux? I know he’s got a lot of knockouts, but as Evander Holyfield once told me, “It’s not how much knockouts you have, it’s who you’ve been knocking out.” In your mind, when you look at his ring record, just how impressed are you?

ABEL SANCHEZ: First off, going back to the Rubio fight, I think he was a young man of 22 or 23 years old who everybody was laying riches in front of him, I believe before that fight, they had an HBO special on him. They were touting him as the next big thing at 22 years old. I believe he was a little too young, he fought a guy who was very experienced. Marco Rubio took all he had to throw for the first six rounds, and then tired him out and was able to put him away. That was inexperience on David’s part.

The skills are still there, the punching power is still there, it’s just inexperience that made him lose that fight, in my opinion. Then Marc Ramsey comes in after those two losses, and now they’re on a roll. They are on a roll because Marc has taken over now, not only physically but mentally over David’s boxing program, so it’s easy for David now to just listen to somebody instead of being the boss and doing things his way, now he’s got a guy that’s running the show for him.

He’s fought in the last three or four fights he’s fought some I think pretty good fighters, the last fighter, N’Dam. N’Dam was a World Champion, went down a couple of times I guess, but he’s a very difficult guy to fight. He beat Curtis Stevens, I witnessed that, down in Santa Monica so he’s not a bad fighter.

So David has got — I’m not going to say an extensive resume, but he’s got fighters on his record that have done something, and the thing you can’t take away from David is he can punch. He proved that in the last three or four fights, he can punch, so that’s something that on the 17th, it could go either way. If David lands a good punch and Gennady is not ready, maybe Gennady goes down, so we’re definitely looking for the best David Lemieux and the biggest punch.

Q. Guys, my question is for Tom. Tom, regarding Gennady’s first Pay-Per-View, what would you consider to be a success?

TOM LOEFFLER: You know, Bob, we’re always conservative with our estimates. HBO was very supportive of the event. They wouldn’t have green lit or supported the event if they didn’t think it was going to be successful. When we made the deal with Golden Boy, it was a fair deal as far as the structure of the promotion, and I think as the promotion has gone along, a great indicator for Pay-Per-View sales is ticket sales, and when this event broke the presale record of any boxing event that MSG has had and sold 15,000 tickets within the first week, that’s a huge indication that the Pay-Per-View is going to be successful, but I’m always conservative on the estimates, and I’m very optimistic on the results for the Pay-Per-View.

Q. Do you feel, and this is piggy-backing on Dan’s question, but do you feel that Gennady is well known enough around the country to attract people? Because Lemieux — David Lemieux is a Canadian, he’s well known to boxing fans, but is he well enough known that people are going to say, I have to see this fight?

TOM LOEFFLER: I think it’s more so than the individuals but the combination of the two champions fighting each other. Gennady is breaking through where he’s going into the mainstream. We brought him to different entertainment events and a lot of the entertainers said he’s their favorite fighter, so he’s definitely crossing over. When you have a match-up against a guy like David Lemieux — look if this was somebody that wasn’t known or two fighters that weren’t known in the main event, we wouldn’t have sold 15,000 tickets in the first week, so I understand what you’re saying as far as you need a broader scale, broader base for the Pay-Per-View, and it’s a risk that we took.

When we sat down with Oscar and his team at Golden Boy, neither fighter has been on the Pay-Per-View, also with Chocolatito and Viloria, same situation, but when you put that combination together it’s a great value for the fans and for the event and I think the boxing fans will really respond to this event.

Q. And having Chocolatito on the card also increases your Hispanic viewership, I would think.

TOM LOEFFLER: No question. It’s a perfect combination having Chocolatito against Brian Viloria. Brian Viloria is very popular, he was on the 2000 Olympic Team for the United States and brings a strong Filipino following with him, and Chocolatito’s Hispanic following, so it’s a great one-two punch, and that’s really where our optimism is as far as the success of the event.

Q. Abel, Gennady recently said you have been working on his “Mexican” style. Can you elaborate what that means to be fighting a “Mexican” style?

ABEL SANCHEZ: The Mexican style that we’re trying to develop with him, we have been trying to develop with him is just a more of an entertaining style, a style that is reminiscent of fighters in the past, Duran, Gomez, Sanchez, Chavez and even Oscar’s fights of 20 years ago, or 15 years ago, where guys stood in the middle of the ring and went at each other and used their legs and gave the fans the kind of fight that they deserve for the money that they’re paying.

So to answer that question a little easier, it’s more of an entertaining, aggressive, American public type of fight.

Q. And how would you say Gennady has progressed in adopting this Mexican style in the past few fights?

ABEL SANCHEZ: I think he’s done well, I think this is the fight that finally presents a challenge to him mentally. I’ve always said in the past great fighters, it’s not so much the physical challenge but the mental challenge, that it’s important to them, and in this training camp he has proven me right by the attitude and the atmosphere in the gym has been so much different because he does perceive a challenge and perceive a fighter that is as strong as he is and punches as long as he does, and for as long as the fight goes he will have to be on his P’s and Q’s as, just like David will, and the guy that lands the first big punch, the other guy is going to sleep.

Q. I hate to bring up André Ward’s name, but do you believe a lot of fighters are starting to use Gennady Golovkin’s name to get recognition for themselves? The seem like they are calling him out saying he is ducking fighters or he’s not as good of a pound-for-pound fighter, but they always seem to have his name in their mouth.

ABEL SANCHEZ: I think it’s history. I think every young fighter is calling out the older fighter, and when the older fighter gets it, the young fighter is calling him out. At one point when Gennady was beginning, of course we were mentioning other names that were above us, but that’s just the nature of the beast. That’s something that has to be done so that your name is in print, but at this point it’s okay for André to call his name out, but André needs to fright. André needs to fight to be relevant. André needs to fight so the people tonight don’t forget who he is. Just because he won six, four years ago and has fought two times in the last three years, against nondescript opponents doesn’t make him qualified for those kind of fights, so I think when he starts fighting and becomes relevant, I’m sure that fight is down the road, but until then doesn’t make any sense to us.

Q. Gennady, there have been terms through this promotion and this conference call about breaking through, being more entertaining with a “Mexican” style, this fight finally presenting a challenge. There is a couple of other significant middleweight fights coming up in the near future with Quinlan/Jacobs, and Alvarez/Cotto. Do you see this as a break-through fight for you, and where do you see yourself in a year’s time with these two significant fights on the horizon as well?

GENNADY GOLOVKIN: You know, right now I’m going to focus on David Lemieux because he is good fighter. He’s champion. The future, yes, of course, but now the middleweight division it’s a good situation, very interesting situation, three or four fighters, Alvarez, Miguel Cotto and Andy Lee, I want unification title. My goal is always about middleweight division; my focus is on that weight division. Why not?

Jacobs is very good, too, not just for us for middleweight division. Great three or four fights in the future.

Q. At the age of 33, certainly not to say you’re old but is there any acceleration or rush to do — get these fights made sooner than later?

GENNADY GOLOVKIN: That’s promoters. I feel great, I feel like I’m 20. Look at Bernard Hopkins; he’s 50. He’s like 30 he is like a young guy, very smart guy.

Q. He’s also an alien, but —

GENNADY GOLOVKIN: (Away from mic.) Yeah.

Q. My question is about the stakes for the fight. The fight stands on its merit quite well, but there are big stakes down the line. This question is for Oscar if he is still on the call, and Tom, have you guys made an agreement in principle to have the winner of this fight, fight the winner of Cotto and Canelo?

TOM LOEFFLER: I can go first on that, Michael. As you mentioned, there is a lot at stake, not only the winner having unified the titles, but then also is in the position of being the mandatory for the winner of Cotto/Canelo, which is also a great fight a month later. So it’s exciting times, as Gennady alluded to in the Middleweight Division.

It would be premature to start having any discussions with Oscar because we don’t know who is going to win on October 17th, and we don’t know who is going to win November 21st, but after all that shakes out, it’s going to be great times moving forward and just continuing the path of trying to unify the titles.

Q. Oscar your thoughts?

OSCAR DE LA HOYA: Yes, it would be premature to talk about such a match-up. October 17th is such an important fight for “GGG” and David Lemieux and November 21st is an important and dangerous fight for Canelo and Cotto, so we don’t know what the outcome will be and we don’t know what’s going to happen so it would be very premature to even discuss it.

But it’s definitely — it’s definitely, you know, something to look forward to.

BERNIE BAHRMASEL: That would wrap up our end of the call. Tom, Gennady, if you have closing comments?

GENNADY GOLOVKIN: Thank you so much, everybody. Don’t miss my fight October 17th, it will be a great show for people. Thank you so much.

BERNIE BAHRMASEL: Abel, just a couple days before leaving for New York City, how are things going up there?

ABEL SANCHEZ: Things are going great, wrapping up the training camp, it’s becoming that event that we all had hoped it would be and we’re looking forward to the 17th, putting on a great show in front of a sold-out crowd.

BERNIE BAHRMASEL: Thanks Abel and Gennady for joining us. Tom, go ahead with your closing comments.

TOM LOEFFLER: Just to emphasize two champions in the ring, Gennady has a great dance partner with David Lemieux, that’s what is going to create fireworks in the ring. On the promotional side, I have a great partner with Oscar and Golden Boy Productions, and they’ve been very support with the whole promotion, and I think all the fans and all the media are going to be in for a great event October 17th.

BERNIE BAHRMASEL: Thanks, Tom. We will turn the call over to Cecilia to introduce David Lemieux’s side. Cecilia.

CECILIA ZUNIGA: I want to thank all the media members for joining us today. Now for the second portion of the call and to introduce Team Lemieux, I would like to reintroduce Oscar De La Hoya, Chairman and CEO of Golden Boy Promotions.

OSCAR DE LA HOYA: Thank you, very much, Cecilia. As all the media has heard about the details of this terrific event, let me go ahead and introduce to you Team Lemieux. First off, I am pleased to introduce to you Camielle Estephan, President of Eye of the Tiger Management and manager of David Lemieux. Camielle?

CAMILLE ESTEPHAN: Thank you, Oscar, looking forward to a wonderful event. Everything has been said; there isn’t too much more to say. I will give you a little bit of our perspective as we head into this with ten days left. We have the top-two middleweights in the world fighting each other. This is a real treat. It’s a real treat for the fans, a breath of fresh air for boxing.

This will be like two Titans fighting each other, two major mountains. Imagine Everest versus Kilimanjaro, I’m excited. The pleasantries are finished, now it’s time for the action. We are coming to New York to meet Golovkin and take the belts; that’s the goal, and the only goal. We have done our homework very, very well. We feel extremely confident because of the work we have put in, and the stage is set.

There are ten days to go, can’t wait for the 17th, MSG is going to be rocking!

OSCAR DE LA HOYA: Thank you, Camille. And now the man in charge of getting David Lemieux ready for this battle October 17th, his trainer, Marc Ramsey, Marc?

MARC RAMSEY: Hi, everybody, it’s a pleasure to speak with you today. We just had an amazing training camp. David just reach every single objective that we fixed for that great victory for next week, and we have, like I say, a very, very good training camp. Now we working on some finesse, and everything is going to be ready for next Saturday.

OSCAR DE LA HOYA: Thank you, Marc. David is ready for this test, he is looking the best I’ve ever seen him look. My business partner, the legendary Middleweight Champion, Bernard Hopkins and I were in Montreal at David’s workout facility, and take it from us, we know a thing or two about what it takes to fight the very best, and what it takes to be world champion, and David has it.

He proved that in June with an exciting win over the dangerous Hassan N’Dam, and he will do it again October 17th. So now I am pleased to introduce to you the current IBF Middleweight World Champion with a most impressive record of 34-2, 31 knockouts, from Montreal, power puncher, David Lemieux.

DAVID LEMIEUX: Hello, hello. Thank you, Oscar. Thank you, everybody. It’s been a great camp. It’s been a great — it’s been a great training. Everything has been on spot. Never had a more complete camp than this. I have been pushing myself to the maximum with each training, with each exercise, with everything envisioning the big day ahead of me, October 17th, so I did everything I had to do to make sure I have no regrets October 17th, because the plan is to walk out of that — out of Madison Square Garden with those belts and hopefully without a broken nose (Chuckles.)

CECILIA ZUNIGA: We will start the Q and A portion of this call.

Q. David, Gennady Golovkin, when other fighters get asked about fighting him they either ask for way too much money, or they just say no. Yet when this fight came up, by all accounts from your team, from Oscar, from Camille, you wanted this fight right off the bat, not wanting to do anything else after you won your title. Some guys would sit on it, take an easier fight. Tell me what was in your mind that made you decide, you know what? I want the fight that everybody else doesn’t want to fight?

DAVID LEMIEUX: The initial plan in my head is that I’m ready, and it’s now or never; let’s do it. Golovkin is at his best. I’m getting to my best, and I will be at my best on October 17th, so in my head if I beat the best middleweight there is, everybody is pointing their fingers at, I’m going to be the best so that’s the plan.

I’ve been working very hard over the years, and I got a very significant win the last fight, I got the title. I got the IBF. Now we took a big step and we’re over here, unifying the titles. So we’re ready for it, that’s why I took the fight.

Q. David, I think most people look at it and say it’s going to be an exciting fight; that’s just the way you guys perform, but you’re the underdog in this fight because of the top kinda streak that “GGG” has been on over the last few years and they look and say, Lemieux got knocked out a few years ago, lost a couple of fights, how do you see that shaping up? Do those losses haunt you or do they drive you, or do they not matter anymore?

DAVID LEMIEUX: Those two losses are completely insignificant to where I am today, because, you know, everybody has their path, everybody has their ways of doing things and their evolution and becoming a champion, you know. Some guys go undefeated, some have defeats and become the greatest fighter out there. They have 0 significance and are in my past, those two losses, were miscalculations. I lost those two fights because of things I neglected, and I changed everything in my life to be where I am at today. So I think it’s been a big achievement from my behalf to where I am now, and the changes that I have needed to do to fighting for a unification title, so it’s a big step I took, and, you know, the numbers speak for themselves.

Everybody understands the gravity of this fight, and I think the people are going to be surprised with what I bring to the table October 17th. I’m a big underdog in this fight, and to me it makes no difference, I know who I am, and I know what I’m going to bring to the table, so we will see after the fight.

Q. David, one thing that we know you bring is punching power. Do you feel like if you’re able to get to him that your power — he’s shown a great chin, if you ask him and his camp they say through 300-plus amateur fights, his 30-plus professional fights, he’s never been on the floor, never been knocked down, never been seriously hurt in a fight, but I’m not sure he’s ever fought a guy with the pure power that you have. So do you feel like if you can touch the chin or get to the body or whatever that you can be the first guy to do some serious damage to this guy and maybe get him on the deck?

DAVID LEMIEUX: You know, I don’t look at his past or his future or anything like that. I’m going in there, being me being neutral and him being neutral, we’re two hard punchers, and it’s going to be — we’re both at 0-0 when we enter into that ring on October 17th.

It’s going to be a hard test in front of me but I’m really not worried and, yes, I do have power, but I’m not going into this fight only with power. I’m going to need all the tools in order to be sharp in a fight of this degree. He’s a very good fighter, very smart, but I think I got a lot of surprises to show the world.

Q. How weary do you have to be of his punching power which has been his calling card. He’s got 20 knockouts in a row.

DAVID LEMIEUX: Power is not something that frightens me. Nothing really frightens me when I’m in the ring, when I know I’m prepared. I know I’m going to take on the strongest there is, and I’m very confident in my strength so I have zero worries going into a fight against anybody when I’m perfectly ready, which I am today.

Q. Much respect for your willingness to tangle with Gennady Golovkin so soon after winning your first World Title, obviously a lessor competitor would have milked it. With the recent defeat of Lucas Matthysse and the potential defeat of Canelo at the hands of Cotto, do you feel any extra motivation to keep the Golden Boy Promotions name relevant in boxing? Can you carry the Golden Boy banner on your shoulders, if need be?

DAVID LEMIEUX: I think the names associated with me are going to be very proud to be associated with me, as long as they’re associated with me, Golden Boy, Eye of the Tiger, everybody with me is going to be proud. I bring a lot to the table, and I’m going to bring a tremendous amount of greatness on October 17th, so nobody is going to be disappointed, not the fans, not my family, and not my teammates.

Q. What are your thoughts on the Canelo/Cotto fight? Who do you think is going to win that, David?

DAVID LEMIEUX: I think it’s a very interesting fight, Cotto being the veteran, Canelo being the young, hungry guy, but I think the younger, hungrier guy has the advantage in this fight, being Canelo. Cotto is a great fighter, but I will give him the edge, I think, to Canelo on this one.

Q. We all know that you and Gennady Golovkin are the middleweight power punchers, and I know this has been touched on a little bit in the call but simply, who would be more important in this fight the good chin or the power punch?

DAVID LEMIEUX: The biggest heart!

Q. The good punch?

DAVID LEMIEUX: The fighter with the biggest heart, that can take and receive — it’s not about power this fight it’s about character and toughness and determination and who wants it more. We’re both hard punchers, everybody knows that but let’s see beyond that.

Q. My question is for David. David, I will ask my question in English, but I will appreciate if you can translate your answer right after in French just for me. Abel Sanchez told us the difference in that fight will be the boxing IQ. That Gennady Golovkin has the edge on that factor. Do you think that your lack of experience can be a factor, and you will do your best to show that you have the real great and final experience necessary to make it a good match?

DAVID LEMIEUX: You want it in French or English?

Q. Both.

DAVID LEMIEUX: I think Abel Sanchez and the whole team are quite underestimating me, but come October 17th I’m going to be very, very well prepared with my boxing abilities, my boxing skills, my strength and everything around it, so I’m going to be a very complete fighter. I’m not just David Lemieux, the power puncher, but I’m also David Lemieux the fighter.

So I’m going to come in there very complete and make sure that everything is well rounded to perfection.

Q. In French, please?

DAVID LEMIEUX: (Answering in French.)
Q. David, I wanted to talk not so much about the fight but the whole promotion leading up to the fight. Most of your fights in the past have all been local affairs, taking place at the Bell Center, this one has been quite different with the whole Pay-Per-View, press conferences in New York, LA, conference calls, lots of public training, I’m just wondering how that whole being on a much bigger stage, how it’s been for you and have you enjoyed it?

DAVID LEMIEUX: It’s been great. You know, this is the biggest achievement a fighter can have, to get a chance to unify the titles at Madison Square Garden being built up the way it is. I think I’ve come a long way, Golovkin has done a great job. We’re two great fighters, and we’re there to show the world what they want to see, but there will be only one who walks out of that place with the belt, and I’m planning to do that.

This has been a great, great camp, it’s been a tremendous achievement, you know, getting the IBF World Title against a very hard opponent, very good opponent like Hassan N’Dam, and now even higher, fighting against Golovkin, unifying those titles, so I’m very confident going into the fight. I’m very happy, very pleased with myself and my team to be where I am and to be doing what I’m doing.

Q. Getting a taste of it, how eager are you to continue at this level and have bigger and bigger fights as your future emerges?

DAVID LEMIEUX: We’re at a big fight right now, so I will take care of that and the future comes fast enough. The future comes fast enough, so I’ll take it a step at a time. You know, I want to do great things in my life so I’m — you know, that’s why I have to achieve great things. This fight for me is very important, not just to fight it but also to win it and to show some — to shock the world. I’m a big underdog in this fight and it’s perfect by me, I will be the same in the ring.

Q. Is that a role that you cherish? I mean, I don’t know that you’ve ever been an underdog in the past. How have you adjusted to being that, everybody saying, “David, you’re an underdog” it’s not words you’re used to hearing.

DAVID LEMIEUX: Yeah, well, it’s not a problem by me. I know who I am. I have a lot of confidence in myself and my team does, also, which is why we’re at where we’re at right now and a lot of fighters duck a lot of fighters, I don’t. Golovkin is a very good fighter, but I am also a very good fighter so it’s going to be even better for me when I win. To me it makes no difference. I don’t really pay attention, the numbers or to people who give out a lot of show. I’m focused in the fight, I’m fighting Golovkin in the ring, it’s me against him, and nothing else matters.

Q. David, I wanted to ask, after fighting most of your career in Canada, how important is it for you to come to America and put on a good show for a U.S. audience?

DAVID LEMIEUX: Well, you know, boxing, everybody knows that it’s — U.S. has dominated boxing and the big TV and everybody is there, so it’s very important for me to make sure I create a nice, strong fan base in the U.S. and then the world. It’s been very hard work but it’s finally pay off, especially since I fought against Rosado, coming in the fight in the market sensor, at first I got booed, then when I left the ring I got a standing ovation.

I think I bring enough to the table so I can — I’m a fan-friendly type of fighter, so I make sure I always respect the fans by giving them the best fight I can.

Q. Do you expect to have a fair amount of Canadian fans in house for you at The Garden?

DAVID LEMIEUX: Yes, actually I do. There is a lot of Canadians, Quebecers, coming down to support me, we will have a big — few buses that are coming down to support me, so, yes, I have a lot of Canadian fans here that have always been pushing me and motivating me since the beginning of my career and have been a great help in my great achievements in life in the boxing world.

So, yeah, I expect a nice crowd on my behalf.

Q. Oscar, we’ve seen the sport basically dominated by one guy over the last couple of years, now he’s supposedly retired. What’s your opinion, is the sport best when one guy is dominating, like maybe what Tyson was in his heyday or when you were in your time, or is it now about other people trying to make themselves known and become the best?

OSCAR DE LA HOYA: No, we’re definitely going into this very unique era, the next era in boxing, which is very exciting, because not only will we be able to witness greatness from one individual fighter but a handful of fighters. October 17th, with Golovkin vs. Lemieux, the winner obviously will become, you know, the undisputed middleweight champion of the world and will be recognized as the very best.

We have November 21st with Canelo versus Cotto, another superstar in the make inning whoever wins that match-up so, you know, boxing was dominated in the past by one individual, whether it was Tyson, whether it was me or Chavez, Mayweather, in recent years, so we have exciting times to look forward to, but we will be able to witness several champions who will carry the sport for years to come.

Q. When you say boxing now, I know a lot of people were disappointed with the Mayweather/Pacquiao and they stayed away from Mayweather’s last fight. Do you see an opportunity — I don’t know if it’s to “revive” the sport but take it to a different level than trying to have 2 million Pay-Per-View buys and generate $4 million. Is it good to get back to the basics again?

OSCAR DE LA HOYA: It’s always great to get back to the basics. For me, the Mayweather era was not about the respect, it was not about seeing who was the very best about — it wasn’t about the fights; it was about the business. And what we’re witnessing here with Golovkin and Lemieux, it’s about honor and pride, it’s about who is the best middleweight in the world. The same with Canelo versus Cotto.

As long as we can give the fight fans the best fight possible, you know, boxing will always continue to grow, the fight fans will continue to buy Pay-Per-View and will we see another 4 million Pay-Per-View fight? Absolutely! As long as we can keep on putting the best against the best.

Q. My question is for Marc Ramsey. I would like to hear your thoughts on Abel Sanchez talk about “GGG” having a higher boxing IQ and if like earlier, David, you could answer in both English and French, that would help me.

CAMILLE ESTEPHAN: To be honest, I don’t care. I don’t focus on what Abel Sanchez say or don’t say, because the night of the fight it’s going to be Golovkin against Lemieux, it’s not going to be me against Abel or something else, and if you look at the three last fights of David Lemieux, I really believe the three trainers of the last three opponents underestimate the ability and the IQ of David Lemieux to box. When people look at David Lemieux on video for sure the first thing you see, that guy has a lot of power, but they underestimate the ability of David Lemieux, and also his ring IQ, and they going to be the next ones to be surprised.

Q. Would you please answer in French?

CAMILLE ESTEPHAN: (Answering in French.)

Q. Anything you have done differently for this fight, preparation wise?

CAMILLE ESTEPHAN: No, we’ve — we train like we train usually, for sure we have a specific opponent. We analyze very well Mr. Golovkin, but at the same time it’s important for us to know what David Lemieux can bring to the ring and impose on that night, not only follow what is Gennady Golovkin but impose what is David Lemieux, what he can bring to that ring is very important, and we did a very good job at it the last eight weeks.

Q. Could you answer in French?

CAMILLE ESTEPHAN: (Answering in French.)

CECILIA ZUNIGA: Thanks, Mike. Now I would like to introduce David for his final comments. David, do you have any final comments?

DAVID LEMIEUX: October 17th, history will be made. It’s going to be a fight to be talked about for years to come and I’m extremely excited to be part of this great event and to be showing the world, you know, a great night of boxing. Unifying those titles is the absolute goal for me on October 17th, thank you.

CECILIA ZUNIGA: Thanks, David. Marc Ramsey, do you have any final comments?

MARC RAMSEY: Just that our piece of the puzzle are together and don’t miss the show; it’s going to be great event of boxing.

CECILIA ZUNIGA: Thank you, Marc. Camille, any final comments?

CAMILLE ESTEPHAN: Simply like to thank everybody for being there, being attentive to what we are doing and bringing boxing to the levels that it’s been for so many years. It’s the “Sweet Science” and these guys are going to contribute to the history and we are very, very confident that we are going to have a new superstar in David Lemieux. To repeat Oscar’s words, we have a great team around us with Oscar, Bernard, Marc, I feel like we have done fully all our homework and if we have been underestimated, then the price will be paid.

CECILIA ZUNIGA: Thank you, Camille. Now to make the closing comments, once again, Oscar De La Hoya.

OSCAR DE LA HOYA: Thank you for being on the call. Like everyone said, we’re all excited. October 17th will be one for the ages! It will be exciting, it will be historical, champion versus champion, sold-out arena will be a great indication that this event will be a total success all around, so we will see you fight week. We have a lot of exciting updates and a lot of — we have the training session, the media workouts, so we will see you in New York, thank you.

Sullivan Barrera “Beterbiev’s trainer knew to avoid me”

Top light heavyweight contender Sullivan Barrera is still very upset that an IBF final eliminator bout against Artur Beterbiev has been derailed by his visa issues. Barrera, who is ranked #8 by the IBF (and also rated in the WBO and WBA’s top 10,) said that he didn’t hesitate when the fight was offered to him.

“I accepted the fight less than 5 minutes after my team offered it to me. This is what I have worked my entire life for. I want to be world champion and Beterbiev was my opportunity to get to Kovalev,” Barrera explained.

The former Cuban amateur standout believes that there is more to Beterbiev’s promoter Yvon Michel’s insistence on staging the fight in Canada than meets the eye. Earlier this year Barrera called out former light heavyweight champion Jean Pascal who is also trained by Beterbiev’s trainer Marc Ramsay and that fight was immediately rejected.

“It’s kind of funny that Beterbiev’s last fight was in the United States yet he won’t fight me here in the U.S. He is an undercard fighter and isn’t a big draw in Canada. Everyone knows that Bute is selling the tickets on November 28th,” Barrera said in reference to the fight card that proposed for his clash against Beterbiev in Quebec.

“Pascal turned me down numerous times. Beterbiev has the same trainer as Pascal. He’s not stupid. He knows what I would do to his fighters. He should just admit he doesn’t like the matchup instead of putting up obstacles to prevent the fight.”

Barrera has been training in Big Bear with his trainer Abel Sanchez and is willing and able to face any top 10 rated contender in the light heavyweight division.

Joining the action packed night, International Hall of Fame Boxer Michael “Jinx” Spinks will host a special meet and greet at the Special Events Arena from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Fans with tickets to the event will be able to meet the 1976 Olympic medalist and former two division world champion, before televised fights.

In the co-main event of the evening, Frankie “Pitbull” Gomez (18-0, 13 KOs) is set to face Tijuana, Baja California, Mexico’s Jorge “Pantera” Silva (19-9-2, 15 KOs) in a 10-round welterweight fight sure to add excitement to the night.

As part of the live stream on Ring TV, Paul Ritter (0-1) of Newport, Calif. will face Relanzo Richard Jr. of Lancaster, Calif. who is set to make his professional debut in a four-round battle of heavyweight giants. Alberto Fundora (5-0, 2 KOs) of Coachella, Calif. is scheduled to take on Richard Romero (1-0), and also as part of the live streaming event, St. Louis’ KeAndre Gibson (13-0, 5 KOs) will be looking to keep his perfect record intact in a scheduled eight-round super lightweight contest against Phoenix’ Freddy Lopez (10-2, 7 KOs).

Entering the professional ring for the first time in a four-round bout will be Las Vegas super lightweight Marco Magdaleno, who faces fellow debutant Phillip Bounds of Lancaster, and in the four-round welterweight opener, Glendale’s Melsik Baghdasaryan (2-0, 1 KO) takes on LA’s Diego Padilla (1-1). Tickets for the event are on sale now and are priced at $25, $35, and $45 at the Fantasy Springs Box Office, by calling (800) 827-2946 or online at www.fantasyspringsresort.com.

Making the move from prospect to contender, Joseph “JoJo” Diaz Jr. has been a steady performer who impresses every time he steps between the ropes. This year, the former member of the 2012 U.S. Olympic boxing team has taken his game to the next level with wins over Juan Luis Hernandez, Giovanni Delgado and Rene Alvarado, and with another victory on October 23, the 22-year-old southpaw will be knocking on the door of the top ten of the featherweight division.

A seasoned fighter of Ciudad Obregon, Sonora, Mexico, Ruben “Canelito” Tamayo will be looking to impress in his second fight of 2015. The 26 year-old has had a chance to fight some of the best in the division, including a run in with Jesus Marcelo Andres Cuellar for the interim WBA Featherweight World Title and former world title Jesus “Estrella” Ruiz. Now, the featherweight fighter will be looking to add a victory to his resume and proving that he is still in the title game when he faces Joseph Diaz Jr. on Oct. 23.

A stellar amateur who won the 2009 United States Championship and earned a Silver medal in the 2009 World Championships, East LA’s Frankie “Pitbull” Gomez turned professional in 2010 and he has been on a mission ever since then. Owner of 12 knockouts in three rounds or fewer, Gomez can also box when he wants to, as shown in his near-shutout victory over longtime contender Vernon Paris in his most recent bout in July of 2014.

Hard-hitting Tijuana native Jorge “Pantera” Silva went through a rough spell after a 17-1-1 start to his professional career, as he battled the likes of Joshua Clottey, Alfredo Angulo, Pablo Cesar Cano and Alan Sanchez. But the 23-year-old got back to his winning ways in July with a fifth-round technical knockout of Juan Carlos Moreno, and he’s looking forward to his showdown with Gomez and introducing the “Pitbull” to the loss column for the first time.

24-year-old welterweight prospect, KeAndre Gibson, who now makes his home in Las Vegas, has become quite popular in Texas, where he won impressive victories over John Nater and Jose Hernandez. In January, Gibson took on Nicaragua’s Nelson Lara winning the fight via unanimous decision. In his second fight of 2015, Gibson faced Jorge Ramos in an eight round fight winning the bout via unanimous decision in the undercard of Canelo-Kirkland on May 9.

Looking to pin a loss on Gibson’s perfect professional record is 30-year-old Freddy “Duke” Lopez, a native of Chihuahua, Mexico who now makes his home in Phoenix. Owner of seven knockouts among his 10 pro wins, Lopez has won two of his last three, with his last three victories ending before the final bell.

A boxer since the age of 12, 19-year-old Alberto Fundora won the Junior Olympic and National PAL titles as heavyweight, but as a pro, the talented Coachella product has found a home at super middleweight, where he will risk his unbeaten record against fellow unbeaten Richard Romero of Commerce.

Las Vegas native Marco Magdaleno comes from a fighting family that includes brothers Diego and Jessie, and after a stellar amateur career, the hard-working southpaw from Indio will make his professional debut against another newcomer to the game, Lancaster’s Phillip Bounds.

A stablemate of UFC champion Ronda Rousey, Glendale’s Melsik Baghdasaryan has competed in both MMA and boxing, but he’ll have his boxing gloves on when October 23 comes around, as the 23-year-old seeks his third victory against Los Angeles’ Diego Padilla.

AHMED ELBIALI TO BATTLE FERENC ALBERT TALKS TRAINING CAMP & MORE

MIAMI, FL (October 8, 2015) – Unbeaten light-heavyweight, Ahmed Elbiali (12-0, 11 KOs), has an opponent for his upcoming fight taking place October 13, 2015 at the Little Creek Casino Resort in Shelton, Washington. The heavy-handed puncher Elbiali, will square off against Hungary’s Ferenc Albert (20-7, 9 KOs). Premier Boxing Champions “Toe-to-Toe Tuesdays” on Fox Sports will televise the 8-round beginning at 9PM ET / 6PM PT live on Fox Sports 1.

Ahmed Elbiali, who boosts a 92% knockout ratio, is a few days away from his nationally televised showdown with Ferenc Albert. Hailing from Miami, Florida, Elbiali speaks on his training camp, boxing career and more. Here’s what he had to say.

On facing his opponent Ferenc Albert…

“I don’t really know much about Ferenc Albert, except for the fact that he’s on a ten-fight winning streak. I know he’s been extremely busy this year, fighting in twelve bouts so far this year. I know he’s coming into this fight with a lot of confidence so this is no easy fight for me. This will be a great fight for the fans because both of us are gunning for a victory.”

On having his fight televised live on Premier Boxing Champions “Toe-to-Toe Tuesdays” on Fox Sports…

“Fighting on the PBC on Fox Sports cards has been great for my career. I’m constantly staying busy and I’m learning what it takes to fight on a regular basis. The exposure I’m receiving is really getting the fans familiar with my fighting style. Since I’m an aggressive fighter, the “Toe-to-Tuesdays” title fits me well. I’m always going to be letting my hands go, throwing big bombs, trying to get my opponent out of there. Fans in general want to see the knockout, and that’s what I try to deliver every time I step into the ring.”

On his relationship with longtime Trainer Carlos Albuerne…

“I’ve been with Carlos since my last fight as an amateur. We have a great relationship and I respect him as a coach. He’s got a lot of knowledge. Together we make a great team and he knows how to get the best out of me. He’s always told me that I have the punching power to become a world champion. I’m grateful to have him in my corner.”

On his progression as a professional fighter…

“With each fight I’m learning something new. I know as my career moves along there will be times when I will have to go into deep waters, so I’m continuously working on my boxing skills. Right now I’ve been fortunate to get some early knockouts, but I train to fight twelve rounds. I’m evolving as a fighter and pretty soon I’ll be better-rounded with my boxing abilities.”

On working at the training facility “Fast Twitch” in Miami…

“Fast Twitch” is a state of the art facility with great strength and conditioning coaches. I’ve gained a lot of endurance training there and my stamina is always peaking on fight night. With the training I’m getting at “Fast Twitch”, I’m always on weight. I love the fact that I’m getting top notch nutrition there as well. It’s a great place to train if you’re a professional athlete.”

Tickets priced $20, $40, $30, $60 and $100 not including fees, are on sale in person at the Little Creek Casino Resort box office or online HERE. Doors open at 5PM PT, with the first televised fights starting at 6PM PT.

Next month, Campa has his focus on LA FIGHT CLUB as he defends his undefeated status against Miguel Huerta Angel and shows American audiences that he is a force to watch.

Thirty-seven year old Miguel Angel Huerta of Los Angeles boasts an impressive career, claiming the vacant NBA Light Welterweight title against Allan Vester in Fort Myers, Florida in 2004; the WBO Inter-Continental lightweight title against Marco Angel Perez in Corona, Calif. in 2004; and the vacant NABF lightweight title against Efren Hinojosa in Houston, Texas in 2007. After recent tough losses to Mauricio Herrera, Antonio Orozco and Haskell Rhodes in 2014, Huerta will look to claim victory in his first fight of 2015 against Pedro Campa.

Rising prospect Joet Gonzalez of Glendora, Calif. has been steadily climbing the professional ranks since his debut in 2012. Most recently, Gonzalez has impressed fans with wins defeating Ali Gonzalez at the April edition of LA FIGHT CLUB, as well as Jose Angel Beranza in May and Miguel Tamayo in August at Fantasy Springs Resort Casino in Indio, Calif. Gonzalez will return eager to add to his undefeated record at his second appearance at LA FIGHT CLUB.

Hailing from San Antonio, Hector “El Finito” Tanajara has been fighting since 2007 and during that time has won eight national championships. In 2012, he qualified to attend the Veles Cup in Kurgan, Russia and took the gold medal in his weight class. This opportunity led the amateur standout to qualify for the 2016 USA Pre-Olympic trail competition. Winning the tournament and having been selected as one of seven to go to the 2016 Olympic trails, Tanajara decided instead to focus on a professional career. Now, the eight-time national champion made his professional debut as a newly signed Golden Boy Promotions fighter at the August 6 edition of LA FIGHT CLUB with a quick follow up victory at the September 18 edition. He will look to continue his winning streak at the Belasco Theater on November 6.

Eddie De La Huerta, of Montebello, Calif., is set to make his LA FIGHT CLUB debut next month after making a successful professional debut in January. Fans took notice of the local fighter at Quiet Cannon in his hometown as he defeated Percy Peterson in January and Rick Quevedo in June. Next month, De La Huerta will look to impress a new crowd as he readies for his first fight in downtown Los Angeles.

Damon Allen of Philadelphia exploded onto the scene claiming victory in five fights of his first year as a professional. He followed up with three impressive wins against Anthony Michael Linenfesler and Hector Marengo in 2014 and Luis Rodriguez in 2015. Allen will fight to keep his undefeated record next month and show fans that he is a rising prospect to watch.

Also hailing from Guaymas, Mexico, Alan Campa made his U.S professional debut in April 2015 at the Aviator Sports Complex in Brooklyn, NY, where he faced tough opponent Sergiy Derevyanchenko, halting his four bout-winning streak. An experienced fighter boasting thirteen wins in his home country, Campa is hoping to regain his winning streak as he challenges Fabiano Pena in his first appearance at LA FIGHT CLUB.

Fabiano Pena of Los Angeles has accumulated an impressive record of ten wins since his professional debut in Balneario Rincao, Santa Catarina, Brazil in February of 2013, where he went on to claim the vacant Brazilian cruiserweight title against Lourival Luiz Da Silva that same year. He made his U.S. debut in 2014 boasting a win against Dave Valykeo at the Wheeling Island Casino Racetrack in Wheeling, West Virginia, and hit a rocky patch with one win and three loses in 2015. Pena will seek redemption as he takes on an evenly matched opponent in Alan Campa.

LA FIGHT CLUB is a monthly boxing series featured on the first Friday of each month, with an upcoming show on Dec. 4. The series showcases the brightest stars in the sport and present these exciting matchups in a nightclub atmosphere with an original setup. The boxing ring is set on the main floor of the Belasco Theater with on-camera standing room for fans in front of the ring similar to a concert pit, as well as reserved balcony and floor seats. Cruz stops Vazquez in 6

On Wednesday night, DiBella Entertainment staged another installment of its popular Broadway Boxing series at New York City’s famed B.B. King Blues Club and Grill in midtown Manhattan in front of a passionate and lively crowd. Headlining the card was undefeated Bronx junior welterweight prospect Louis Cruz in his ring return following a 10-month absence related to a hand injury.

Now fully recovered, the 24-year-old Cruz, 139¾, impressively dispatched of southpaw Ariel Vazquez, 137½, Managua, Nicaragua, in the sixth of a scheduled eight-rounder. Cruz almost ended matters very early as the first jab he threw in the fight dropped Vazquez for a count. Vazquez arose but was soon felled again by a devastating counter right hook to the chin. Surviving the opening round, Vazquez was subsequently more mindful of his defense as the bout ensued. Cruz remained aggressive while getting in some much-needed rounds to shake off his ring rust. Vazquez was floored once more in the fourth frame by a right hand-left hook combination. In the round six, Cruz landed a blistering left hook that immediately bloodied and broke Vazquez’ nose. To his credit, Vazquez stayed on his feet but succumbed to the following attack from Cruz prompting a referee stoppage at 2:41 of the stanza. Cruz is now 11-0 (5 KOs), while Vazquez’ record dropped to 11-10-2 (8 KOs). As an amateur, Cruz was a New York Golden Gloves champion and after a second-place finish at the 2011 National Golden Gloves, he competed in the 2012 US Olympic Trials before turning pro later that same year.

Moving down to the junior middleweight division, Ukrainian southpaw Ivan Golub, 150½, co-promoted by DiBella Entertainment and Fight Promotions Inc., now living and training in Brooklyn, battled the experienced and crafty Kendal Mena, 150½, of San Cristobal, Dominican Republic, in a scheduled eight-round affair. Using a stiff jab to set up his powerful straight left, Golub followed up one of his lefts with a right hook upstairs to wobble Mena at the bell ending round one. The right hook continued to be a key weapon for Golub, as that punch felled Mena in the final minute of the second round. Another right hook staggered Mena in round three and a follow-up straight left snapped his head back forcing the referee to jump in to stop the bout at the 1:54 mark. The fast-rising Golub is now 9-0 (7 KOs), while Mena saw his ledger dip to 20-3 (11 KOs). Golub amassed an astonishing record of 270-32 during his amateur career. He became a five-time Ukrainian National champion, won bronze medals at the Junior World Championships in 2006 and at the World Championships in 2009. He also participated in the World Series of Boxing, winning all five of his bouts.

In round three. Golub dropped Mena with a straight left.

Peter Dobson remained undefeated by stopping Tavoris Teague after round three of their scheduled 6-round Super Welterweight bout.

Dobson dominated the action as he laned shits to the head and body and was well on his way to inflicting more damage until Teague’s corner stopped the bout in between round’s three and four.

Dobson, 150.4 lbs of Bronx, NY is 6-0 with 5 knockouts. Teague, 150 lbs of La Habra, CA is 2-6-2.

Shemuel Pagan came off an 18-month layoff to score a 1st round stoppage over David Nelson in a Super Lightweight bout.

In round one, Pagan landed a series of body shots sent Nelson to the canvas. Just seconds later, it was more of the same as Pagan dropped Nelson for a 2nd time and the corner had seen enough and the fight was stopped at 2:42 of round one.

Pagan 140 lbs of Brooklyn, NY is 6-0 with 5 knockouts. Nelson, 139.2 lbs of Bakersfield, CA is 3-5.

Carlos Adames scored a 1st round stoppage over Rudy Lozano in a scheduled 6-round Super Welterweight bout

Adames dropped Lozano in round from a hard combination. Adames continued the assault as he landed heavy blows without Lozano throwing back and the fight was stopped at 2:38 of round one.

Adames, 148 lbs of Santo Domingo, DR is now 4-0 with 3 knockouts. Lozano, 149.6 lbs of Corpus Christi. TX is 2-1-1.

Steve Woodall remained undefeated by stopping Javier Loya in round four of a scheduled 6-round Super Middleweight bout.

In round three, Woodall dropped Loya with a double left hook. Early in round four, Loyá’s corner decided he had suffered enough punishment and the fight was ended at 39 seconds of round four.

Woodall, 162.4 lbs of Houston, TX is now 9-0-1 with 6 knockouts. Loya, 161.2 lbs of Phoenix, AZ is 7-4.

WBC WORLD TITLE FIGHT FEATURING BROOKLYN’S ALICIA “SLICK” ASHLEY SET FOR OCT. 29 AT BROOKLYN BRAWL

BROOKLYN, N.Y. (Oct. 7, 2015) – ATTENTION GUINNESS! The Book of World Records may need to be updated after the Thursday, Oct. 29 Brooklyn Brawl card at the Aviator Sports Complex. Boxing champion-turned-promoter Dmitriy Salita announced on Wednesday that an already-outstanding card is adding a female world title fight with possible historic implications.

Brooklyn’s own Alicia “Slick” Ashley, who will be 48 years, 81 days when the bell rings later this month, is a former world titleholder who currently owns the Guinness World Record as the most mature female boxing world champion. She first earned the distinction on Oct. 13, 2013, when she defended the WBC Super Bantamweight belt with a victory over Zenny Sotomayer in Tijuana, Mexico, at 46 years, 61 days, thus etching her place in the renowned global archive.

Ashley (22-10-1, 4 KOs) – ranked second in her division by BoxRec and noted as one of the best pound-for-pound women’s battlers in the world – has the chance to re-write history once again and put her own world record further out of reach when she challenges undefeated Irish fighter and current Interim WBC Bantamweight champion Christina McMahon (7-0, 3 KOs). McMahon has compiled an unblemished slate since beginning her professional career in 2010 and will look to halt Ashley’s attempt at extending her Guinness mark on Thursday, Oct. 29 – the winner takes home the vacant WBC Super Bantamweight title.

“This will be another, epic Brooklyn Brawl show with a WBC world title fight featured at the event. This show will have prospects and contenders, and fighters from all parts of the globe and from all around New York City,” said Salita, the former IBF, WBA and NABA International Junior Welterweight Champion who fights out of Flatbush, Brooklyn, as a professional. “Alicia is one of the most highly-regarded boxers in the world and is looking to follow in the footsteps of future Hall of Famer Bernard Hopkins by re-capturing a title at this point in her career. Her great skills will certainly be put to the test against an undefeated contender in Christina McMahon.”

On Thursday, Oct. 29, the Aviator Sports and Events Center in South Brooklyn will serve as the next proving ground for many New York City-based rising stars. The exciting undercards will build toward the featured events, where Ashley and McMahon will square off and unbeaten Russian and top-10 world-ranked bantamweight contender, Nikolay Potapov, is set to make his U.S.A. debut.

Doors open at 6 p.m. with the first bout scheduled for 6:30 p.m., as the Brooklyn Brawl looks to once again captivate New York City with fistic fury. Tickets begin at $20 and are available by calling 1-844-890-2120 or by visiting SalitaPromotions.com.

Potapov – currently ranked as the No. 14 bantamweight in the world by the WBO and now rated No. 10 globally by BoxRec – will put his undefeated 13-0 record (6 KOs) on the line as he makes his debut on U.S. soil. The fast-rising battler piled up more than 180 amateur tilts and amassed a number of national and international tournament victories, and now as a 25-year-old pro has climbed quickly to challenge himself with four 10-round bouts and a 12-rounder against top competition. In his last pro victory, Popatov earned the WBA Asian title by beating Jason Canoy, who is rated No. 14 in the WBC and No. 12 in the IBF.

Welterweight prospect “Trigger” Tresean Wiggins (7-1, 6 KOs) – fresh off a third-round knockout at the Aug. 25 Brooklyn Brawl: Boxing At The Beach affair – will be back on the Aviator card. The fighting pride of Newburgh, N.Y., was impressive last month against Baltimore’s Kevin Womack Jr. and looks to add another stoppage victory to his burgeoning resume.

Undefeated junior lightweight contender Dimash Niyazov of Bensonhurst, Brooklyn, will have his mettle tested once again at the Aviator complex. The Brooklyn police officer, whose story was chronicled by the Wall Street Journal in August, improved to 8-0-3 (5 KOs) with a six-round Boxing At The Beach unanimous decision over local fighter Ariel “Fuego” Duran in a Brooklyn-Queens crosstown rivalry bout.

Detroit’s James Gordon Smith (8-0, 5 KOs) is another rising star putting his unblemished record to the test in Brooklyn. The eight-time Motor City Golden Gloves title-winner and former national amateur champion is intent on making a name for himself in the pro ranks.

A light welterweight and Olympian making his professional debut, Serdar Hudayberdiyev comes to the Brooklyn Brawl after an accomplished international amateur career. The pride of his native Turkmenistan on the West Coast of the Caspian Sea, he captured gold in the Asian games and was selected his country’s flag bearer in the 2012 Summer Olympics in London.

Heavyweight Emilio Salas (3-1-1, 1 KO) of Puerto Rico – who opened up the Boxing At The Beach slate with a second round TKO at the expense of opponent Glenn Thomas – will add some thunder to the Oct. 29 card while welterweight Giorgi “Goga” Gelashvili (2-0, 2 KOs) of Brighton Beach, Brooklyn, will provide the lightning. Gelashvili, a former three-time Georgian national champion, overwhelmed opponent DeLoren Gray-Jordon last August with a speedy salvo of blows in round two, leading to his second stoppage victory in as many fights and as many months.

A product of Corona, Queens, Edward Valdez was recently added to the upcoming Brooklyn Brawl slate. A veteran at 13-11-2 (10 KOs), Valdez will face Aik Shakhnazaryan (16-2, 7 KOs) of Samara, Russia, in an eight-round lightweight contest.

Broadcast information will be announced at a later date. Interested corporate partners should contact Mark Fratto at mfratto@linacremedia.com.

WORLD SERIES OF FIGHTING HITS COMERICA THEATRE IN PHOENIX, ARIZ. WITH ONE-NIGHT, EIGHT-MAN LIGHTWEIGHT TOURNAMENT ON FRIDAY, NOV. 20, LIVE ON NBCSN

LAS VEGAS (October 7, 2015) –World Series of Fighting (WSOF.com) will return to Comerica Theatre in Phoenix, Ariz. with a historic, one-night, eight-man tournament that will appoint its winner the number one contender in the promotion’s fearsome lightweight (155 pounds) division, on Friday, Nov. 20, live on NBCSN at 9 p.m. ET/6 p.m. PT.

Priced from $29.99, tickets for “WSOF 25: Eight-Man Lightweight Tournament” go on sale on Friday, Oct. 9 at 10 a.m. PT at the Comerica Theatre box office as well as online at Ticketmaster.com and WSOF.com.

All eight tournament participants – Luis “Baboon” Palomino, Brian Foster, Mike Ricci, Islam Mamedov, Brian “The Bandit” Cobb, Jorge “Macaco” Patino, Joao “The Brazilian Samurai” Zeferino and Rich Patishnock – have been confirmed for battle in the first-ever World Series of Fighting one-night tournament.

Quarterfinal stage matchups for the tournament will be announced soon.

“We are excited to roll out our first-ever, one-night tournament filled with some of MMA’s top lightweight fighters, and to distinguish a new number one contender in this weight class that has been growing aggressively and is packed with world-class talent,” said World Series of Fighting President Ray Sefo.

Palomino (23-11) of Miami, Fla. is coming off an unforgettable, second, all-out slugfest with reigning, undefeated World Series of Fighting lightweight champion Justin Gaethje in the main event of WSOF 23, a fight that was named “Fight of the Month” for September last week.

The 34-year-old Palomino, who holds notable wins over the likes of Jorge Masvidal, Gesias Cavalcante and Patino, put Gaethje on the defensive in the outset of their rematch before being stopped near the close of the second round (4:30) with a Gaethje barrage of punches.

Another proven entity who has fought remarkable wars in the cage, Foster (23-7) of Sallisaw, Okla. is fresh off a spectacular performance at WSOF 23 where the 31-year-old scored a thunderous, first round (:32) KO (punch) of previously unbeaten LaRue Burley.

Ricci (10-4) of Montreal, Quebec, Canada is one of the latest additions to the ever-growing World Series of Fighting roster. The 29-year-old, Firas Zahabi-trained Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu brown belt has faced and defeated a collection of top rivals during his seven-year professional career.

Mamedov (12-1) of Jersey City, N.J. via Derbent, Dagestan, Russia is a ferocious 25-year-old who is unbeaten in his last 10 starts, a streak that dates back to Aug. 1, 2010. To date, Mamedov has made two appearances in the World Series of Fighting cage, scoring vicious, first round TKO’s on Leon Davis and Jimmy Spicuzza at WSOF 20 and WSOF 22, respectively.

Cobb (20-8) of Bakersfield, Calif. is a wrestling and Jiu-Jitsu expert who has produced submission finishes in 12 of his 20 career wins since his professional debut in 2004. He holds notable victories over fellow standouts Rad Martinez, Drew Fickett, Kazunori Yokota and Ronys Torres.

Patino (38-15-2, 1 NC) of Houston, Texas is a native of Sao Paulo, Brazil who holds black belts in both Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and Judo, and boasts the most one-night tournament competition experience of the six competitors slated for action, thus far, in the Nov. 20 affair. Of the seven previous one-night tournaments he saw action in, the 42-year-old emerged the winner in five of them.

Zeferino (18-6) of Florianopolis, Santa Catarina, Brazil is a submission ace who has won 13 of his 18 career conquests by way of submission. A new addition to the World Series of Fighting roster, the 29-year-old will make his promotional debut in the midst of a five-fight win streak.

Patishnock (6-2) of East Stroudsberg, Penn. is a 27-year-old rising star and a three-time veteran of World Series of Fighting action. Under the promotional banner, he holds victories over Igor Gracie and Gregor Gracie, both members of MMA’s legendary first family.

World Series of Fighting will announce additional details concerning the format and rules of the tournament, soon.

GENNADY “GGG” GOLOVKIN, BRIAN VILORIA AND RUSLAN MADIYEV LOS ANGELES MEDIA WORKOUTS QUOTES

Gennady Golovkin
LOS ANGELES, CA (October 7, 2015) Boxing Superstar and WBA, IBO and WBC
“Interim” Middleweight Champion Gennady “GGG” Golovkin, (33-0, 30KOs),
Four-Time World Champion in two weight divisions, Brian “The Hawaiian Punch”
Viloria, (36-4 (22KOs) and top junior welterweight prospect Ruslan Madiyev, 5-1-0 (3KOs) held media workouts for a huge gathering of local press on Tuesday afternoon at the Wild Card West Boxing Gym in Santa Monica, California.

Golovkin, (33-0, 30KOs), will battle IBF Middleweight World Champion David Lemieux, (34-2, 31KOs) in a Middleweight World Championship Title Unification bout on Saturday, Oct. 17 at the “Mecca of Boxing” Madison Square Garden and LIVE on HBO Pay-Per-View. Golovkin has knocked out an astounding 20 opponents in a row and will be making his 15th world championship defense. His 91% knockout percentage is the highest in the history of the middleweight division.

In the highly anticipated televised co-feature, Viloria, (36-4, 22KOs), will challenge
Consensus #1 Pound-For-Pound Fighter and WBC Flyweight World Champion, Roman “Chocolatito” Gonzalez, (43-0, 37KOs). A duel citizen of the United States and the
Philippines, Viloria also represented the United States in the 2000 Olympics. He has previously held world titles in the junior flyweight and flyweight divisions.

Top junior welterweight prospect, Ruslan Madiyev, (5-1-0, 3KO’s) will also be fighting in a scheduled four round bout against an opponent to be announced. The 21-year-old Madiyev is trained by the renowned Abel Sanchez alongside Golovkin in Big Bear Lake, California.

Below are what the fighters and their teams had to say:

GENNADY “GGG” GOLOVKIN, WBA, IBO and WBC Interim Middleweight Champion:

“Training camp is a little bit new, a little bit different, not like any of the others. New ideas and new strategies and it’s very interesting. We have different sparring partners because of his style.”

“Lemieux is a champion and he feels like a champion and this is a unification fight. I think he is ready for a unification fight and he understands the situation. He is smarter now
because of his experience in his recent fights.”

“Right now he feels better because he has a stronger team. He gets to talk with Oscar and Bernard. Bernard tells him, I remember my fight at Madison Square Garden against Tito. Right now he is acting like a star – I see the videos – and of course he is a star.”

“Madison Square Garden is a beautiful place with a beautiful team and I have a lot of respect for that place. HBO Pay-per-view is the last step – it is the top.”

“This is going to be like a street fight. He has a good style – almost like amateur style. I will beat any style – amateur style or brawl style. He will be a good test for me.”

You have a strong chin?

“Yes, and I thank my parents for my strong chin. Lemieux will be a test for my chin. But it’s not just my chin. It is distance and discipline, timing and style.”

“I am a regular guy. I am a regular man. (The power) also comes from my parents. This is boxing. It’s not just because I have power. Power comes from every step, timing, it’s the style where every second is important and I give credit to Abel Sanchez and my team.”

“Every fight is different and every fight is difficult. This is a big step, but first it is a big test and everyone understands that this step is much bigger.”

(Cotto or Canelo next?)

“It doesn’t matter and I don’t think about it. For me? Whoever is number one. I want all of the belts in the middleweight division and I will fight whoever is number one and it doesn’t matter who it is. I don’t like business. I like old school – who is number one?”

“I think this fight is more technical for me, and maybe for him too.”

“It is very interesting for me because right now he is a star. With power alone, he could go maybe three or four rounds with me. If he boxes he could go twelve rounds. Every second is very important – every round – every step.”

(Does his knockout strength mean anything to you?)

“I don’t know. Maybe.”

“He has his style. I like my style and my work.”

“I love my life. I am happy. My wife is happy. My son goes to school and he is happy. I have a car. Three or four Rolls Royce or Bentley? For what?”

BRIAN “HAWAIIAN PUNCH” VILORIA, Former Four-Time World Champion in Two Weight Divisions:

“I want it more. I have preparing myself for this type of event, I have been wanting this for this so long. I have so much more fire now.”

“The styles make the fights, a lot of people know that it is going to be an action packed fight and a lot of people gravitate towards that.”

“Finally, we have been wanting this fight for the past two years and to finally have it here, it is exciting.”

“I have never seen a guy to take it to him and I feel like I will be that fighter that will step up to him.”

“Can’t wait. I am prepared and I want time to move faster. I am mentally, physically ready for this fight and ready to show the world what can happen.”

“This is going to be the best Viloria that people have ever seen.”

ABEL SANCHEZ, Head Trainer to Gennady Golovkin:

“This preparation has been different. Finally, he has gotten someone who he considers as a threat. Someone that he feels will give him a fight for as long as it lasts.”

“All the great fighters have been hurt and if that happens how is he going to react? But I am confident that it won’t go twelve, he is going to go down as one of the best punchers and best middleweights ever.”

TOM LOEFFLER, Managing Director of K2 Promotions:

“It has been a great camp. Sparring has been going along well. This is the biggest fight and biggest puncher of his career and it’s two champions fighting each other, that is why people and the media are gravitating towards this fight.”

“He has been training hard with Abel and focused on sparring making sure he is ready for a power puncher like Lemieux. ”

RUSLAN MADIYEV, Welterweight Prospect:

“Training has been going well, I have been training with Gennady for the past year as part of my training camp.”

“There is a lot of intensity a whole different workout. I have grown a lot technically but also feel a lot stronger.”

“It is a dream come true to fight at Madison Square Garden and I am going to show all the fans an exciting fight.”
Golovkin vs. Lemieux is presented by K2 Promotions and Golden Boy Promotions in association with GGG Promotions and Eye of the Tiger Management. The event will take place Saturday, October 17 from Madison Square Garden and will be produced and distributed live by HBO Pay-Per-View beginning at 9:00 p.m. ET/6:00 p.m. PT. DANIEL JACOBS VS. PETER QUILLIN PRESS CONFERENCE QUOTES FOR DEC. 5 CLASH ON SHOWTIME

Daniel Jacobs
NEW YORK, N.Y. (Oct. 7, 2015) -WBA Middleweight World Champion Daniel “The Miracle Man” Jacobs (30-1, 27 KOs)and former world champion Peter “Kid Chocolate” Quillin (32-0-1, 23 KOs)participated in a kickoff press conference on Wednesday at Planet Hollywood Times Square in New York City to formally announce their highly anticipated Dec. 5 showdown in the main event of SHOWTIME CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING live on SHOWTIMEfrom Barclays Center in Brooklyn.

The undercard for the Brooklyn showdown will be announced soon.

Below is what the fighters and executives had to say today:

DANIEL JACOBS

“This is a big opportunity for me. This is a big opportunity for Brooklyn. It could not have happened at a better time. I’ve been calling him out for two years, but it had to take that time to build and for our careers to blossom.

“The fans will be the winners at the end of the day. This matchup is going to be all action-packed. It’s a very interesting matchup.

“I’m thankful to Peter for accepting the challenge and for giving me the opportunity to have a career-changing fight.

“I believe my time is now. I know there was hype around me as a prospect. People have their opinions about me, but I believe at this present time that I’ve matured as a man overall. I’m in my prime.

“To me, this fight means everything to Brooklyn. This is a thick-skinned city that was raised on fighting. You always had to defend yourself. We have that pride of having great fighters that come from here and I’m fortunate enough to be that champion to continue the legacy.

“I feel like this fight has a lot of significance to it, not just in New York, but to the sport of boxing in general. A lot of people have been asking for this fight, and now that it’s here, you will see a tremendous amount of attention surrounding it.

“I think youth is everything in the sport of boxing. Although Quillin is older than I am, he has that experience and power that he will bring into the ring. Anything can happen in this sport.

“I am such a fan of this particular fight, this fight is going to be an amazing fight.

“Just because Peter has flaws in one area, he can back that up with a one-punch knockout, so you always have to be prepared for that.

“Peter’s flaws are that he loads up his shots too much, is slow on his feet and isn’t headstrong. If I can execute the game plan I think it will be a phenomenal outcome.

“We adopted Peter as one of Brooklyn’s own, but come fight night you will all see a Brooklyn-born champion.

“It doesn’t matter what he comes to the table with, we will have a 10-week camp for this fight and we will be completely ready.

“I’ve been on a strict diet, I haven’t been eating chocolate. But after December 5th, I’m going to be the Cookie Monster, don’t miss it.”

PETER QUILLIN

“This fight means everything to me. It’s two guys for the battle of Brooklyn. We are both going to have great support in the building and this fight will really inspire people.

“In New York City you never get to see two guys at this level of boxing square off against one another. It means a lot and I’m very excited about this fight.

“I expect Danny to bring his great chin to this fight. I didn’t notice it before but his chin looks very huge, so that’s what we’re looking at now.

“I feel like I’m the son of Brooklyn. Although I’m from Michigan, this city has taken me in like I’m one of their own. You see what Las Vegas did for Floyd Mayweather, that’s what Brooklyn did for me.

“This is a good guy vs. good guy fight and it’s good for the sport of boxing. I’m coming to throw bombs. It’s not about the bills. It’s about the character of the person I’m fighting. This is the type of fight that is going to bring the best out of Peter Quillin.

“I lead a very healthy lifestyle and train even when I’m not preparing for a fight. I keep myself as young as possible.

“You’re going to see Fourth of July in the month of December. We’re going to melt some snow.”

BRETT YORMARK, CEO of Barclays Center

“When I think of Barclays Center now, we truly are in the big event business.

“When I think about the remainder of 2015, there were two dates on my calendar and one of them is Battle for Brooklyn on Dec. 5. The two gentlemen up here are part of the Barclays Center. This is their home away from home. There is no place better for them to be getting it on.

“I want to make sure we put on a great show for the fans in Brooklyn. We’re excited to see all the fans on Dec. 5.”

LOU DIBELLA, President of DiBella Entertainment

“Barclays Center has become the home of boxing and one of the great places to watch boxing right now.

“I promise you, this will be the undercard of the year. It’s going to be the most interesting undercard of the year. Get your tickets now.

“SHOWTIME has developed both of these young men. These two champions both made their names as SHOWTIME fighters. This fight will properly end the year on SHOWTIME.

“I’ve known both of these young men since they were kids. They are terrific men and a true credit to the sport. These guys have always gotten along, they respect each other as fighters, but there is a true belief on both their parts that they are the best.

“Take all the friendship and throw it out the window. This is going to be nasty. This is going to be brutal. There will be boxing but these guys will throw bombs. They can’t help themselves, that’s what makes them so great.

“The winner of this could be a superstar.

“This fight is to show who the man in town is. The winner will own Brooklyn. If you’re the man in Brooklyn, you’re the man. This will be a fight of the year candidate, no doubt.

“I expect both men to go down. The fans will be on their feet the whole time. This is a can’t miss fight between two evenly matched champions and guys who want and need this victory.”

STEPHEN ESPINOZA, Executive Vice President & General Manager, SHOWTIME Sports

“We’re thrilled to be working with DBE and Barclays Center on this event. You’re going to hear a lot of genuine excitement because this is the right fight, at the right venue and at the right time.

“Brett [Yormark] has turned Barclays Center into the home of boxing on the East Coast.

“We take a great amount of pride in these two young men, because they are everything that is right with the sport.

“They’re very different young men with fascinating stories. They’ve both overcome incredible odds. Their roads led them to each other. It will be hard for us to choose who to root for because these are two great young men and great boxers.”

HATTON: “RELIKH IS A STAR IN THE MAKING”

BOXING legend Ricky Hatton says it is only a matter of time before Belarusian puncher Kiryl Relikh emerges as a star.

Relikh took his unblemished record to 20-0 with 18 knockouts with a fifth round stoppage of Argentina’s tough Christian Ariel Lopez in Monaco on Friday night and ‘The Hitman’ believes the 25-year-old has what it takes to reach the summit of the 140lb division.

Hatton begun training the Eastern European in March last year and has been slowly adding new dimensions to his fearsome natural power.

“The sky is the limit for Kiryl,” Hatton said. “He’s got raw punching power than makes the hairs on the back of your neck stand on end, but we’ve added a few subtleties to him that I think really give him the edge.

“He beat another solid opponent on Friday and I know a lot of people left the venue talking about what they’d seen. I think a few more performances like that, and the boxing fraternity will really start to take notice.

“He’s a bit of a dark horse at the moment because he’s not had a lot of TV exposure, but when he does get on the big shows, he’ll take them by storm.”

In recent years, light-welters such as Ruslan Providnikov, Khabib Allakhverdiev and Viktor Postol have come through the ranks in the former Soviet Union before making a name for themselves in the United States.

Hatton, himself no stranger to the big stage in New York and Las Vegas, believes his charge can also go onto wow audiences Stateside.

“I think they’ll love Kiryl in America,” he said. “They like tough, aggressive fighters with KO power over there and they get that in abundance with Kiryl.

“I don’t know what they feed their fighters in those former Russian countries, but all of them seem to have dynamite in their fists and that’s what fans want to see.”

Abraham defends WBO title against Murray on November 21 in Hannover

Arthur Abraham
King’ Arthur Abraham (43-4, 29 KOs) will defend his WBO World Super Middleweight Championship against Britain’s Martin Murray (32-2-1, 15 KOs) on November 21 at the TUI Arena in Hannover, Germany.

Abraham, the 35 year-old from Berlin, will be aiming for a fifth successive defence of his WBO strap following a devastating sixth-round technical knockout victory over domestic rival Robert Stieglitz, and the two-time World Champion is expecting a tough test against his battle hardened opponent Murray.

‘’Martin is a very strong opponent,’’ said Abraham. ‘’He has challenged for World titles three times before and on two of those occasion he should of won. He is a very deserving challenger and I think it will be a good fight. That is what the public want to see – the best fighting the best – and that is what they will see on November 21 in Hannover.’’

Abraham is no stranger to fighting British opposition. Most recently he squared off against former British Champion Paul Smith in two competitive championship contests. As he prepares to face another Brit, the German fighter has drawn comparisons between Murray and his former opponent.

‘’Martin is a very different type of fighter than Paul,’’ said Abraham. ‘’He is more experienced and has fought at a much higher level. When I fought Paul I was the best opponent he had faced but Martin has fought at this level before so I expect this fight to be a tougher challenge.’’

Murray, from St Helens, England, will be hoping to claim World honours at the fourth time of asking. Having made the move up to super middleweight, following a brave attempt at the formidable Kazakh Gennady Golovkin’s middleweight titles, the 33 year-old has recorded three wins inside the distance, and believes now the time has come for him to claim boxing’s ultimate prize.

“I am thrilled to have the chance to face Arthur for the WBO World Super Middleweight title,’’ said Murray. ‘’I was shocked when Arthur agreed to the fight, it’s one he didn’t have to take so must be confident but in at my natural weight now and believe on November 21 I will become World champion.

“It’s the fight that I targeted when I chose to move up to Super Middleweight and it’s one that I am confident of winning. I know that Arthur is a great champion and a tough man to beat on his home patch, but my trainer Oliver Harrison and I both believe that we have the formula to take his title.

“I have never been afraid to travel to fight for World titles and this occasion will be no different; I expect lots of Brits to travel to Germany and it will be a fantastic atmosphere and a great fight for the fans in the Arena and watching on Sky Sports and Sat.1.”

Said promoter Kalle Sauerland: ‘’This is a great match up between two real warriors. Arthur has silenced his critics and proven time and time again why he is the man to beat at 168 lbs. His last performance against Stieglitz is testament to how much more he still has to give in the sport and we expect him to deliver another explosive performance on November 21, live on Sat.1 in Germany and Sky Sports in the UK.

‘’Martin Murray is a fighter who I have a lot of respect for. He has gone on the road, fighting the very best and is unlucky not to have already been crowned World Champion. This may well be his last chance and I expect him to give it his all and more than play his part in this fascinating encounter.’’

“I’m delighted to deliver this shot for Martin on a huge night of World Championship boxing on Sky Sports,’’ said Murray’s promoter Eddie Hearn. ‘’It’s a fight Martin and his team have been asking me for since he signed with us and the opportunity that I believe will see him realise his dream of becoming World Champion.’’

The WBO World Super Middleweight Championship fight between Arthur Abraham and Martin Murray will be broadcast live on Sat.1 in Germany and Sky Sports in the UK. Tickets are available online via tickethall.de and eventim.de.

Pulev returns on October 17 against Arias

Kubrat Pulev (20-1, 11 KOs) returns with a renewed vigour on October 17 as the Bulgarian heavyweight star looks to get his World title ambitions back on track with a victory over George Arias (56-13, 42 KOs) at the dm-Arena in Karlsruhe, Germany.

Pulev has been out of the ring since November 2014, where despite a brave performance, the 34 year-old failed to dethrone Heavyweight Champion Wladimir Klitschko.

Following a period of transition, which has seen the ‘Cobra’ team up with legendary German coach Ulli Wegner, the former European Champion has made some important changes and believes he is now ready to work his way back into World title contention.

‘’The fight against Klitschko was a valuable lesson for me,’’ said Pulev. ‘’At that time I wasn’t doing enough, I was too complacent, but now I know what it takes to become World Champion and I won’t be making that mistake again. This is the start of a new beginning for me.’’

Wegner, the veteran trainer, also knows what it takes to compete at the very highest level having guided the careers of Sven Ottke, Markus Beyer and Arthur Abraham, and now, the 73 year-old has set about transforming Pulev into his next champion.

‘’Kubrat possesses a lot of talent but at times he has let his ego get in the way,’’ said Wegner. ‘’I will not allow this to happen again. I’ve made it clear to him who is the boss. We’ve been working on his defence and he has already shown great signs of improvement. I have no doubt that Kubrat has the ability to compete with the very best.’’

Said promoter Kalle Sauerland: ‘’Kubrat is still one of the best heavyweights in the world. Against Klitschko he showed great heart and took the fight to the champion. He may have lost but his time will come again, and with Ulli Wegner in his corner, we have every faith that he will one day be crowned Heavyweight Champion of the World!’’

Tickets for the Team Sauerland show on October 17 at the dm-Arena in Karlsruhe, Germany are available online via tickethall.de and eventim.de.
