Yoan Pablo Hernandez stipped of Cruiserweight belt; Ramirez elevated to full champion

Yoan Pablo Hernandez has been stripped of the IBF Cruiserweight title and Victor Emilio Ramirez has been upgraded to full champion, according to Dan Rafael of espn.com.

Ramirez (22-2, 17 KOs), 31, who had been the IBF’s interim titleholder, is slated to face Jamaica-born, England-based journeyman Ovill McKenzie (25-12, 13 KOs), 35, who has won four bouts in a row.

Ramirez, 31, initially was scheduled for a mandatory bout on Oct. 2 against Hernandez, 31, a former Cuban amateur star who defected to Germany. Hernandez, however, was still having problems with his surgically repaired right elbow and withdrew from the fight, according to promoter Kalle Sauerland.

“[Hernandez] had a medical exception but got injured again and could not defend the title within the time frame,” Lindsey Tucker of the IBF told ESPN.com on Tuesday. “Interim champion Victor Ramirez has been moved up.”

LUIS ORTIZ VS. MATIAS ARIEL VIDONDO AND TUREANO JOHNSON VS. EAMONN O’KANE ADDED TO THE GOLOVKIN VS. LEMIEUX PAY-PER-VIEW UNDERCARD

Luis Ortiz
LOS ANGELES (Sept. 22, 2015) – On Saturday, Oct. 17, the “Mecca of Boxing,” Madison Square Garden, will host two additional stellar world title matchups as undefeated Cuban heavyweight Luis “The Real King Kong” Ortiz (22-0, 19 KOs) takes on Matias Ariel “El Matador” Vidondo (20-1-1, 18 KOs) for the Interim WBA Heavyweight World Title and middleweight standout Tureano Johnson (18-1, 13 KOs) is set to face Eamonn “King Kane” O’Kane (14-1-1, 5 KOs) in an IBF Middleweight World Title Eliminator. Both bouts, scheduled for 12-rounds, will be featured on the televised undercard of the Middleweight World Championship Title Unification bout between WBC, IBO and WBC “Interim” Champion Gennady “GGG” Golovkin and IBF Middleweight Champion David Lemieux. The championship event will be produced and distributed live by HBO Pay-Per-View beginning at 9:00 p.m. ET/6:00 p.m. PT.

The winner of the Johnson-O’Kane bout will become the mandatory challenger for the IBF Middleweight Championship being contested in the main event between Golovkin and Lemieux.

Previously announced, in the co-featured bout of the Pay-Per-View telecast, Roman “Chocolatito” Gonzalez will defend his WBC Flyweight Championship against two-time former world champion Brian Viloria.

“Luis Ortiz is the real deal – not only does he have tremendous power, but he moves extremely well for a man of his size,” said Oscar De La Hoya, Chairman and CEO of Golden Boy Promotions. “If he gets past Vidondo, and captures his first heavyweight title, fights against anyone in the division – including Wladimir Klitschko – will be on the table.”

“The only way to be the best is to beat the best and taking on Matias and fighting for the Interim WBA Heavyweight World Title is a big step to proving that I am the best,” said Luis Ortiz. “But I am more than ready, I am too fast and too strong for Vidondo and I will prove that on October 17. My dream has always been to become the heavyweight champion of the world and this fight is a big step closer to that dream.”

“Making my U.S. debut while fighting for the interim WBA Heavyweight World Title is a big opportunity for me,” said Matias Ariel Vidondo. “I will get to showcase my power in front of a national stage on HBO Pay-Per-View and on the undercard of one of the biggest nights in boxing this year. I promise my fans and Argentina that I will not let them down. I will be victorious on October 17 and bring home a title.”

“I am grateful for the opportunity that has been awarded to me, to be able to fight in the IBF Middleweight Title Eliminator,” said Tureano Johnson. “It was long awaited, I feel like I am halfway there on the path to accomplishing my goal to becoming a world champion and with Golden Boy Promotions at my side I know it’s inevitable. HBO Pay-Per-View is a major platform and I’m excited to have been chosen and featured as one of their televised fights. I know that the fans have high expectations and they will not be disappointed.”

“I am looking forward to proving I am the next great middleweight champion on October 17,” said Eamonn O’Kane. “I have been waiting for this opportunity my whole career and now that it is finally here I am glad it will be at the ‘Mecca of Boxing,’ Madison Square Garden.”

Fans in attendance will also see a trio of impressive non-televised undercard matchups featuring top prospects from around the globe. In a 10-round lightweight bout, Montreal’s Ghislain Maduma (17-1, 11 KOs) makes his United States debut against the undefeated Maurice Hooker (18-0-2, 14 KOs) of Dallas, TX. Another 135-pounder drawing rave reviews is Washington, D.C. native Lamont Roach Jr. (8-0, 3 KOs) who is scheduled for a six-round lightweight bout. Opening up the night, undefeated super lightweight fighter Ruslan Madiev (5-0, 3 KOs) will fight in a four-round fight. Opponents for Roach and Madiev will be announced shortly.

Tickets for GOLOVKIN vs. LEMIEUX are on sale now and are priced at $500, $300, $200, $100 and $50, tickets can purchased at the Madison Square Garden Box Office, all Ticketmaster outlets, Ticketmaster charge by phone (866-858-0008) and online at www.ticketmaster.com or www.thegarden.com.

Cuban amateur great, Luis “The Real King Kong” Ortiz had amassed nearly 350 wins before making his way to the United States to chase championship gold as a professional. Unbeaten in 24 bouts, the 36-year-old southpaw holds a knockout win over Monte Barrett, and in his most recent bout in June, he needed less than a round to dispatch Byron Polley. Looking to regain the interim WBA title, Ortiz is more motivated than ever to call himself a “World Champion.”

Currently sporting a 10-fight winning streak, Rosario, Argentina’s Matias Ariel Vidondo is nicknamed “El Matador,” but he has played the bull in knocking out his opponent in 18 of his 20 wins. A professional since 2010, the Argentinean heavyweight champion will fight for the first time outside of his home country on October 17, but the 38-year-old is eager to return with a world heavyweight championship belt in his suitcase.

A native of Nassau in the Bahamas, 31-year-old Tureano Johnson proudly represented his nation in the 2008 Olympics, making it to the quarterfinals in Beijing. In 2010, he turned professional and soared up the middleweight ladder before a controversial 2014 loss to Curtis Stevens. Undeterred, Johnson has since won four fights, three by knockout, and as the newest member of the Golden Boy Promotions roster, he knows that if he keeps winning, he will earn a shot at the title in one of boxing’s most storied divisions.

One of Northern Ireland’s most accomplished amateur fighters, Belfast’s Eamonn “King Kane” O’Kane won a gold medal at the 2010 Commonwealth Games and defeated the likes of George Groves and Anthony Ogogo before making his professional debut in 2011. Since then, the 33-year-old has gone unbeaten in all but one of his bouts. He heads into New York City having put together a 6-0-1 record in his last seven, a stretch that includes a 12-round win over previously unbeaten Lewis Taylor in defense of his IBF Intercontinental title in May.

A native of Kinshasa, the 30-year-old Maduma was a five-time Quebec champion as an amateur, and after a second-round technical knockout over Michele Focosi in June, he wants to keep the momentum going.

Lamont Roach Jr. has impressed fans since turning professional in 2014, and on October 17, he will enter the hallowed ring at Madison Square Garden for the first time in a six-round bout. Winner of three bouts thus far in 2015, Roach’s wins over Herbert Quartey, Jose Miguel Castro and Christian Santibanez have shown him to be a young boxer getting better with each fight.

Kazakhstan native Ruslan Madiev has made short work of his professional career having won more than half of those fights by knockout. Most recently the 22-year-old Madiev scored a second round knockout of Julio Sanchez on May 16 on the undercard of the Gennady Golovkin/Willie Monroe sold-out event at the Forum in Los Angeles.

Madiev is also trained by the renowned Abel Sanchez alongside Golovkin in Big Bear, California.

Golovkin vs. Lemieux is presented by K2 Promotions and Golden Boy Promotions in association with GGG Promotions and Eye of the Tiger Management. The event will take place Saturday, October 17 from Madison Square Garden and will be produced and distributed live by HBO Pay-Per-View beginning at 9:00 p.m. ET/6:00 p.m. PT. Doors open at 7:00 p.m. ET and first fight begins at 7:00 p.m. ET.

OCT. 29 BROOKLYN BRAWL TO FEATURE WORLD-RATED NIKOLAY POTAPOV, RISING NYC PROSPECTS

BROOKLYN, N.Y. (Sept. 22, 2015) – Coming off an electrifying evening of “Boxing At The Beach” on Aug. 25 in Coney Island, Dmitriy Salita will once again provide NYC with a night of pugilistic prowess as theworld-renowned boxer-turned-promoter brings his Brooklyn Brawl series back to Kings County on Thursday, Oct. 29. The Aviator Sports and Events Complex in South Brooklyn will serve as the next proving ground for many New York City-based rising stars, the exciting undercards building toward a main event showcasing the U.S.A. debut of unbeaten Russian and top-10 world-ranked bantamweight contender, Nikolay Potapov.

“The Brooklyn Brawl series had a great summer. Beginning an inaugural event at the Brooklyn Paramount Theater in partnership with Barclays Center and ending at MCU Park, home of the Brooklyn Cyclones. Both showcased world-class talent in some incredible fights, and fans showed great support at each event,” said Salita, the former IBF, WBA and NABA International Junior Welterweight Champion who fights out of Flatbush, Brooklyn, as a professional. “Similarly, our Oct. 29 show will feature some of the best fighters on the planet, such as world-rated Nikolay Potapov, and talented, accomplished NYC-based fighters in competitive matchups as they climb up the ranks. This will be another outstanding card for area boxing fans to enjoy.”

Doors open at 6 p.m. with the first bout scheduled for 6:30 p.m. as the Brooklyn Brawl looks to once again captivate New York City with fistic fury. Tickets begin at $20 and are available beginning on Tuesday, Sept. 22, by calling 1-844-890-2120

Potapov – currently ranked as the No. 14 bantamweight in the world by the WBO and now rated No. 10 globally by BoxRec – will put his undefeated 13-0 record (6 KOs) on the line as he makes his debut on U.S. soil. The fast-rising battler piled up more than 180 amateur tilts and amassed a number of national and international tournament victories, and now as a 25-year-old pro has climbed quickly to challenge himself with four 10-round bouts and a 12-rounder against top competition. In his last pro victory, Popatov earned the WBA Asian title by beating Jason Canoy, who is rated No. 14 in the WBC and No. 12 in the IBF.

Welterweight prospect “Trigger” Tresean Wiggins (7-1, 6 KOs) – fresh off a third-round knockout at the Aug. 25 Boxing At The Beach affair – will be back on the Brooklyn Brawl Aviator card. The fighting pride of Newburgh, N.Y., was impressive last month against Baltimore’s Kevin Womack Jr. and looks to add another stoppage victory to his burgeoning resume.

Undefeated junior lightweight contender Dimash Niyazov of Bensonhurst, Brooklyn, will have his mettle tested once again at the Aviator Complex. The Brooklyn police officer, whose story was chronicled by the Wall Street Journal last month, improved to 8-0-3 (5 KOs) with a six-round Boxing At The Beach unanimous decision over local fighter Ariel “Fuego” Duran in a Brooklyn-Queens crosstown rivalry bout.

Detroit’s James Gordon Smith (8-0, 5 KOs) is another rising star putting his unblemished record to the test in Brooklyn. The eight-time Motor City Golden Gloves title-winner and former national amateur champion is intent on making a name for himself in the pro ranks.

A light welterweight and Olympian making his professional debut, Serdar Hudayberdiyev comes to the Brooklyn Brawl after an accomplished international amateur career. The pride of his native Turkmenistan on the West Coast of the Caspian Sea, he captured gold in the Asian games and was selected his country’s flag bearer in the 2012 Summer Olympics in London.

Heavyweight Emilio Salas (3-1-1, 1 KO) of Puerto Rico – who opened up the Boxing At The Beach slate with a second round TKO at the expense of opponent Glenn Thomas – will add some thunder to the Oct. 29 card while welterweight Giorgi “Goga” Gelashvili (2-0, 2 KOs) of Brighton Beach, Brooklyn, will provide the lightning. Gelashvili, a former three-time Georgian national champion, overwhelmed opponent DeLoren Gray-Jordon last August with a speedy salvo of blows in round two, leading to his second stoppage victory in as many fights and as many months.

VIKTOR POSTOL MEDIA WORKOUT QUOTES

LOS ANGELES (Sept. 22, 2015) In preparation for his October 3 battle with Lucas “La Máquina” Matthysse (37-3, 34 KOs) for the vacant WBC World Super Lightweight Championship, Viktor “The Iceman” Postol (27-0, 11 KOs) hosted a Los Angeles media workout at Wild Card Gym with his trainer Freddie Roach on Monday, Sept. 21. Co-main event fighter Antonio “Relentless” Orozco (22-0-0, 15 KOs); and fighters features on the non-televised undercard: Mercito “No Mercy” Gesta (28-1-2, 16 KOs), Julian “El Camarón” Ramirez (14-0, 8 KOs), and Nick Arce (4-0, 4 KOs) also participated in the Los Angeles media workout at Wild Card Gym.

In the co-main event on Oct. 3, former three-division world champion Humberto “La Zorrita” Soto (65-8-2, 35 KOs) of Los Mochis, Sinaloa, Mexico will take on undefeated contender Antonio “Relentless” Orozco of San Diego, Calif. in a career defining 10-round super lightweight showdown.

Also on Oct. 3, undercard fighter and East Los Angeles legacy Julian “El Camarón” Ramirez will look to keep his undefeated record intact when he faces Mexican contender Hugo “Olímpico” Partida (20-5-2, 15 KOs) in a 10-round featherweight bout, and Los Angeles local sensation Nick Arce is scheduled to fight in a six-round featherweight bout. In addition, former world title contender Mercito Gesta will face three-time world title challenger Martin “El Brochas” Honorio (32-9-1, 16 KOs) of Mexico City, Mexico, in a classic Philippines vs. Mexico 10-round lightweight bout.

Here is what the fighters had to say at the Los Angeles media workout about their upcoming fights on Oct. 3:

VIKTOR “THE ICEMAN” POSTOL, Number One Contender for the
Vacant WBC Super Lightweight Title and Former WBC International Super Lightweight Champion:

“I am about to face the strongest, most heavy handed fighter I have ever met in the ring. That is the reason I am at the Wild Card Gym with Freddie Roach. This is my third fight with Freddie. When I first walked into the Wild Card, I was struck by the smallness of it all-then I walked around and saw the pictures of fighters and champions. These are the fighters Freddie turned into champions. I saw the blood and sweat on the two rings. I now know the history of the greatest place in the world to train.

“Freddie never changed by style of fighting. Instead he made small important changes-a movement here and there, tweaking things. He and I are together when we go into the ring Oct. 3. We are prepared to fight. We will win.”

FREDDIE ROACH, International Boxing Hall of Fame Trainer, Seven-Time Trainer of the Year Award Winner and Trainer of Viktor Postol:

“Postol doesn’t know it yet but he’s my new favorite fighter. He works very hard in the gym, does everything we ask and he can bring it. We can win this fight. It is a tough fight but I know we can win, and Postol knows we will win.”

ANTONIO “RELENTLESS” OROZCO, Undefeated Super Lightweight Contender:

“It’s a blessing to be fighting on this card on Oct. 3. I’ve worked hard my entire career and I think this is the stage that we’ve been looking for, to be in the undercard of such a big event with Matthysse vs. Postol.

“Fighting Humberto Soto means doors could open for me with my career, and this is what my team and I have worked for.

“Our priority is to win, whatever I have to do to win, whatever the fight calls for, we’re willing to step up and get a win that night. I’m grateful for this opportunity; it’s been a long time coming. I hope to be victorious on Oct. 3.”

MERCITO “NO MERCY” GESTA, Former World Title Contender:

“This is a big opportunity to showcase my skills, my abilities at a big event because it will open up more opportunities for me. Of course, I have to do well in the ring that night. I’m excited and happy to be on the undercard for two of the biggest names in boxing.

“My strategy is to focus on staying on our technique for my opponent. Every opponent is different. I have changed my training focus accordingly since you need to adapt to their style. I need to focus and really follow what my team and me have been working on. Thank you to the boxing fans, particularly the Filipino fans, thanks for supporting me. I promise you an exciting fight for Oct. 3.”

JULIAN “EL CAMARÓN” RAMIREZ, Top Featherweight Prospect:

“I’m a big fan of Matthysse so I am excited to fight on this undercard on Oct. 3. I know my opponent is a brawler so I’ve been working a lot on my boxing and if I have to brawl, then that’s what I’ll do.

“I’m ready to give the fans an exciting fight. I love the fans and they like to see brawls so I’m going to go in there and try to take the guy’s head off.”

NICK ARCE, Top Featherweight Prospect:

“I feel awesome to be on this great undercard of Matthysse vs. Postol. It’s a big venue and it comes with a lot of pressure. At the same time, I don’t let that pressure get to me. I don’t let it bug me. I just stay focused on the game plan and listen to my corner and do what I do best.

“My game plan is to be smart in the ring and to focus-to be aware of everything my opponent throws and what I can come back with. I’m going to be open-minded and don’t be afraid to do work in the ring.”

Tickets for Matthysse vs. Postol are priced at $150, $75, $50 and $25, plus applicable taxes, fees and services charges, and on sale now. Julian Williams
Bethlehem, PA (September 22, 2015) – Tonight junior middleweight rising star Julian “J Rock” Williams (20-0-1, 12 KO’s) will risk his undefeated record when he takes on rugged Argentinian Luciano Cuello (35-3, 17 KO’s) in a scheduled 10-round bout that will headline Premier Boxing Champions (PBC) TOE-TO-TOE TUESDAYS fight card that will be televised by FS1 and FOX Deportes at 9 p.m. ET/6 p.m. PT.

Williams, of Philadelphia, has established himself as one of the top contenders in the junior middleweights division, but he first must get by the tough, experienced Cuello, who has only lost to top contender Willie Nelson as well as former world champions Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. and Saul Alvarez.

With a win, Williams would not only put himself in select company of conquerors of Cuello but he would be elevated into major fights in the latter part of 2015 or early 2016.

“Training camp went great,” said Williams. “I had a long 9 week camp. I am in great condition as usual and ready to get in there.

“Cuello is a tough guy. He is a real fighter that will come to other guy’s countries and hometowns and put up tough fights.”

Besides his great talent, Williams has been lauded for the way he conducts himself both in and out of the ring. Despite fighting close to home and on national television, 25 year-old Williams won’t be fazed.

“I really don’t think about being close to home or even that the fight is on television. It is an honor, but I am not going to let fighting close to home distract me.”

For the past several months, Williams and former junior middleweight world champion Austin Trout have engaged in a feud on social media and with a win on Tuesday night, they could be headed for a showdown in their next bouts.

“I will address the stuff with Trout after I win on September 22nd. I am close to getting a big opportunity and a shot at the title. I am ready now.”

“I just want the fans to tune into FS1 or come out to the Sands and enjoy the ‘J- Rock’ experience.”

LOS ANGELES (September 22) – Fresh off one of the biggest wins of his career over former world champion Jhonny Gonzalez on September 12, Puerto Rican star Jonathan “Polvo” Oquendo (26-4, 16 KOs) has returned to Golden Boy Promotions as he pursues his first world championship.

“We’ve had a long relationship with Jonathan and are thrilled to welcome him back as he continues his journey to becoming a world champion,” said Oscar De La Hoya, Chairman and CEO of Golden Boy Promotions. “Jonathan’s win over Jhonny Gonzalez showed just how dangerous he is to all titleholders at 126 and 130 pounds. Talent and experience are both crucially important at this level, and Jonathan has both.”

“Golden Boy Promotions has always been fair with me and they’ve given me all the opportunities I’ve hoped for over the years,” said Jonathan Oquendo. “They are family and I am glad to have them on my side as I look to continue my dream to become a world champion.”

BACK-TO-BACK EVENTS AT THE COSMOPOLITAN OF LAS VEGAS SET THE STAGE FOR A BLOCKBUSTER WEEKEND

ufc_title-belt_206
Las Vegas – UFC’s December to remember will be highlighted by an unprecedented three-event fight week featuring some of the sport’s biggest stars. The action begins Thursday, December 10 as No. 6 strawweight contender Paige VanZant battles No. 8 Joanne Calderwood on UFC FIGHT PASS® in the main event of UFC FIGHT NIGHT®: VanZANT vs. CALDERWOOD. The following night No. 2 featherweight contender Frankie Edgar and No. 3 Chad Mendes serve as the marquee bout of The Ultimate Fighter®: Team McGregor vs. Team Faber Finale. Both events will take place at The Chelsea at the Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas.

The blockbuster weekend culminates Saturday night when the first featherweight champion in UFC history, Jose Aldo, and interim champion Conor McGregor, finally settle their differences in the main event of UFC® 194®: ALDO vs. McGREGOR.

Former lightweight champion Edgar (18-4-1, fighting out of Toms River, N.J.) looks to secure a shot at the title with a win in the five-round main event of The Ultimate Fighter Finale. “The Answer” is riding a four-fight win streak that includes wins over Mendes’ teammate Urijah Faber, Cub Swanson, UFC legend BJ Penn and Charles Oliveira. A win here would solidify his place as the No. 1 contender in the stacked 145-pound division. Mendes (17-3, fighting out of Sacramento, Calif.) looks to get back in the win column after a short notice loss to McGregor in July. With a full camp behind him, the Team Alpha Male standout is confident the result will be different and that he will leave the Octagon® in line for another shot at championship gold.

Setting the stage for Edgar and Mendes will be the much anticipated return of third-ranked lightweight Khabib Nurmagomedov (22-0, fighting out of Dagestan, Russia), who looks to keep his perfect record intact when he meets No. 9 Tony Ferguson (20-3, fighting out of Ventura, Calif.). Ferguson is coming off back-to-back Performance of the Night victories, and he hopes to climb into the top five of the division by handing Nurmagomedov the first loss of his career.

To headline the first UFC FIGHT PASS card on American soil, VanZant (6-1, fighting out of Sacramento, Calif.) meets Scottish sensation Calderwood (10-1, fighting out of Glasgow, Scotland). VanZant, who is one of mixed martial arts fastest rising stars, will need to use her relentless attack to counter Calderwood’s dangerous striking in hopes of staying undefeated inside the Octagon and take one step closer to a shot at the title. With four wins by knockout – three in the first round, the Scot is the most dangerous opponent to date for the Team Alpha Male prodigy.

INSIDE TEAM FURY (PART 3)

BOLTON (21 SEPTEMBER) By Peter Fury: You can’t play down the importance of family.

Your family’s your family. There’s no changing it. It’s a bond like no other. If any one of your family had their little finger chopped off, it would impact you in some way. You’d feel it.

So, to have everybody comfortable and happy is a great thing for a fighter, especially one in Tyson’s position. He’s a wealthy man right now. He’s surrounded by family. Family is your blood – you care what happens to each and every one of them.

We’re a very close family, us lot. We care about each other. Yeah, we shout and we argue and we have our differences, but really, when the chips are down, you die for your family.

His dad being out of prison is a massive lift for us all, not just Tyson. It feels like a grey cloud over us has gone. We don’t have to think about what John might be missing or how he might be feeling. He’s home, he’s done his time and onwards we go.

We need peace of mind going into a fight like this. We need to be able to concentrate on the job in hand, rather than worrying about other things. We’ve got that.

As for training Tyson – a member of my family – it’s like second nature now. Tyson is very good. He never gives you lip. He just gets on with it and does what he’s told. We’re family – I want what’s best for him. It’s all about winning. We’ve got that relationship; we know what we’re doing and that’s it.

Being family makes it very easy. We live under the same roof and we’re used to being in each other’s company. We do everything together – eat, sleep, drink, laugh. There’s nobody making calls to the family because the family’s all here. We don’t miss each other during camp because we spend every day together.

Of course, you’ve still got to be professional. You’ve got to step back, see the flaws and work on things and get them right. When they’re not right, they’re not right. There’s no point holding something back because you’re scared of upsetting a loved one. If we don’t improve, as a team, we’re letting each other down. The good thing is, I’ve only got to speak once and they only have to hear the tone of my voice to know I don’t like something.

Also, because there’s only family in the gym, Tyson’s never put up there as any kind of role model or icon. He’s always just one of the lads. He’s no different. The outside world will see it differently, but we don’t. We’ve just got a job to do. Tyson is like the big brother in camp.

Every one of them in the gym is programmed to fight, though. Don’t forget, they’ve been doing it since they were six years of age. They don’t know anything else. They’ve never come across fear before. They’ve lived in a boxing gym all their lives. That’s the big advantage we have over a lot of others…

*** Tyson Fury challenges Wladimir Klitschko for the WBA, WBO, IBF and IBO world heavyweight titles on October 24 in Dusseldorf, Germany. Tickets can be purchased from eventim.co.uk or on 0844 249 1000. The fight will be televised live and exclusively in the UK on Sky Sports Box Office ***

Tybura retains heavyweight title, M-1 Challenge 61 results

INGUSHETIA, Russia (September 20, 2015) – M-1 Challenge heavyweight champion Marcin Tybura retained his title, technically winning by first round knockout as challenger Ante “The Walking Trouble” Delija broke his leg, in tonight’s M-1 Challenge 61: Battle of Narts at Ingushetia, Russia.

Tybura (13-1-0, 4 KO/TKO, 5 SUB), fighting out of Poland, bounced back from a loss action in which he lost a Super Fight to M-1 Challenge light heavyweight champion Stephan Puetz by way of a third-round stoppage due to severely broken nose.

Against Russian challenger Delija (14-3-0, 14-3-o, 5 KO/TKO, 7 SUB) in M-1Challenge 61, Delija broke his lower leg when a kick was blocked by Tybura, who pounced on his fallen foe until the referee stopped the fight when he saw Delija’s grotesquely injured leg.

Three of the other four main card fights ended in decisions. In the co-feature, Antun “Killer” Racic (18-6-0, 0 KO/TKO, 13 SUB), of Croatia, halted Russian featherweight Alexey Nevzorev’s (9-2-0, 1 KO/TKO, 4 SUB) unbeaten M-1 record at 3-0, taking a unanimous decision.

In a pair of featherweights matches, both decided by unanimous decisions, Russian prospect Magomed Idrisov (6-0-0, 2 KO/TKO, 0 SUB) remained undefeated against Lithuanian veteran Sergej Grecicho (21-7-0, 2 KO/TKO, 15 SUB), while Ukrainian Alexander Panasyuk (6-1-0, 1 KO/TKO, 4 SUB) got the best of Russian Lom-Ali Nalgiev (3-4-0, 0 KO/TKO, 2 SUB).

Brazilian light heavyweight Carlos Alexander “Indio” Pereira (33-10-0, 22 KO/TKO, 9 SUB) was impressive in his M-1 debut, locking an arm-bar on late replacement Ruslan Zhemukhov (5-2-0, 0 KO/TKO, 2 SUB), of Russia, in the opening round.

Judges were needed in six of eight preliminary fights. Russian lightweight Ramazan Esenbaev (9-1-0, 2 KO/TKO, 2 SUB) and his countryman, welterweight Rustam Gadzhiev (6-3-0, 2 KO/TKO, 0 SUB), were unanimous decision winners, respectively, over Kazakh-native Damir Ismagulov (4-2-0, 3 KO/TKO, 0 SUB) and Ukrainian Vyachseslav Ten (10-5-2, 4 KO/TKO, 6 SUB).

Split-decision victors were Russian welterweight Maksim Grabovich (2-0-0, 1 KO/TKO, 0 SUB), who ruined Adam Elmirziev’s (0-1-0) professional debut, and Elmar Mamedov versus Ruslan Esmurziev (3-1-0, 2 KO/TKO) in a battle of Russian featherweights.

Russian light heavyweight Akramat Evkurov (5-1-0, 1 KO/TKO, 1 SUB) used an arm-bar in his first-round submission win against Ukrainian Sergey Kutsy (2-3-0, 1 KO/TKO, 1 SUB). Russian heavyweight Murad Ismailov (5-0-0, 5 KO/TKO) went 5-for-5 with 5 KO wins in his young pro MMA career stopping Evgeni Boldyrev (8-6-0, 3 KO/TKO, 2 SUB), of Ukraine, in the first round on punches.

RESULTS FROM INTERNATIONAL FIGHT NIGHT HOSTED BY NEW LEGEND BOXING AND DIBELLA ENTERTAINMENT

dbe_logo
Queens, NY (9/19/15) – On Saturday night, New Legend Boxing and DiBella Entertainment returned to Resorts World Casino New York City with another action-packed nine-bout card for the latest installment of the popular International Fight Night series, proudly sponsored by Nissan of Queens.

In the main event, cruiserweight contender Alex Guerrero, 198, of Salisbury, MD, was shockingly upset by Atlanta’s Brian Howard. A straight right stung Guerrero halfway through round one and had him on rubbery legs. Howard, 195¾, landed a few more right hands to deck Guerrero, who quickly arose to his feet and took an eight-count. He was unable to recover, however, and Howard pinned him against the ropes with a follow-up barrage, forcing referee Harvey Dock to stop the contest at 1:53 of the opening frame. Guerrero suffered his first defeat, dropping to 12-1 (6 KOs), while Howard is now 11-1 (9 KOs).

Alicia “The Empress” Napoleon, 156¼, Lindenhurst, Long Island, engaged Latasha Burton, 153¾, Independence, LA, in a fast-paced brawl for three exciting rounds. Napoleon repeatedly tagged her foe with overhand rights, but Burton’s ring savvy and experience allowed her remain competitive. Often when Napoleon would force her way inside, Burton was waiting to launch her right uppercut. However, Napoleon’s constant pressure began to wilt Burton, who could not come out of her corner for the fourth round, resulting in a TKO verdict. The official time of the stoppage was 3:00 of round three, as Napoleon kept her perfect record intact at 4-0 (4 KOs), while Burton’s dropped below the .500 mark to 4-5.

Brooklyn fan-favorite Julian Sosa, 143½, earned his third pro victory, scoring a four-round unanimous decision over Las Vegas resident Jorge Soto, 146½, with three identical cards of 40-36. Now 3-0-1 (1 KO), Sosa staggered Soto with his straight right in round one and followed up by banging way at the body. Though he showed heart, Soto, 0-4, was hurt by every meaningful punch Sosa threw from then on out.

Irish southpaw Noel Murphy, 152½, used offensive bursts of combinations to quell the game plan of his crafty opponent Mack Babb, 151¾, of Jamaica, Queens, over the course of four hard fought rounds. Feinting Babb to create openings, Murphy often pressured his foe to the ropes and unloaded barrages. Babb’s best moments came when he was able to counter Murphy’s aggression with stinging straight rights. With scores of 40-36, 39-37, and 38-38, Murphy upped his record to 4-0 (2 KOs) winning a majority decision, while Babb fell to 1-6. The 21-year-old Murphy was a two-time National champion in his native Ireland before relocating to Yonkers, NY.

Brooklyn junior welterweight prospect Wesley Ferrer, 140¼, improved to 10-0 (5 KOs) after outpointing Luis Rodriguez, 143½, of Carolina, Puerto Rico, over six rounds. Ferrer snapped Rodriguez’ head back with a straight right in round one and continued to use that weapon throughout with success. The judges tallied 60-54 twice, and 59-55, all for Ferrer via unanimous decision. Rodriguez’ record dropped to 3-6 (2 KOs). In addition to winning the 2009 and 2013 New York City Golden Gloves championship and competing at the National Golden Gloves as an amateur, Ferrer was the 2012 New York Amateur Boxing and New York City Metro Tournament champion.

Over six frames, Bronx southpaw Chris “Golden” Galeano, 157¾, was very accurate with his punches, blasting the granite-chinned Colby Courter, 157½, with powerful hooks and stiff jabs. Galeano just could not miss as the brave Courter continued to come forward and eat whatever leather was heaped his way. A cut was opened over Courter’s left eye in the third. When Galeano shifted his attack downstairs, Courter did show signs of fatigue. In the sixth and final round, referee Vic De Wysocki felt that Courter had taken too much punishment and mercifully halted the action at the 1:08 mark, awarding Galeano, now 9-0 (1 KO), the first stoppage victory of his pro career. Courter, of St. Joseph, MO, dropped to 8-7 (7 KOs). Galeano won nearly every major competition during his amateur career, culminating by winning the 2013 NY Golden Gloves and 2013 165-pound USA National Championship, propelling him to a #1-ranking in the US.

In his DBE debut, the newly signed Canadian middleweight Steve Rolls, 161¼, of Toronto, expertly outboxed Tyi Edmonds, 161½, Meridian, MS, backing him up with a stiff and consistent jab. In round three, Rolls upped his offense, landing left hooks and overhand rights when in close. Edmonds, who tired down the stretch, was just not active enough, as Rolls went on to win a unanimous decision after eight dominant rounds. The judges tallied 80-72 twice, and 79-73, all for Rolls, who upped his record to 12-0 (6 KOs). Edmonds is now 5-3 (3 KOs). Rolls had a very successful amateur career, competing on the 2009 and 2010 Canadian National boxing teams, compiling an impressive 83-14 record in the process.

Landing counter hooks and straight rights, Brooklyn’s Marlon Brown, 145, worked hard to keep the aggressive Evincii Dixon off of him. Dixon, 145, of Lancaster, PA, did find the mark on occasion to which Brown proved to have a sturdy chin. Brown attempted to outbox Dixon over the second half, but Dixon’s pressure never waned. All three scorecards read 39-37 for Brown, who improved to 5-0 (2 KOs) by way of unanimous decision. Dixon’s record fell to 5-10-1 (2 KOs).

Dominican amateur superstar Carlos Adames, 148, now living in Brooklyn and training out of the famed Gleason’s Gym, demolished Rasheed Olawale Lawal, 146, Ventura, CA, inside the opening round to improve to 3-0 (2 KOs). Displaying very quick hand speed, Adames backed Lawal to the ropes and threw a series of flurries to the body to bring down his foe’s guard. Overhand rights to the temple followed and Lawal slowly fell to the canvas for a full count. The knockout came at the 1:52 mark. Lawal is now 1-2-1.

Skoglund retains IBF Intercontinental title in historic homecoming fight

Erik Skoglund (23-0, 11 KOs) retained his IBF Intercontinental Light Heavyweight title tonight in Nyköping, Sweden with a comprehensive points victory over Oleksandr Cherviak (15-5-1, 5 KOs).

The show signalled the return of big-time boxing to Sweden, with Skoglund’s fight being the first over championship distance since Jimmy Ellis defended the World heavyweight title with a controversial fifteen round decision over Floyd Patterson in September 1968.

In front of a sell out crowd of 5,232 people, the 24 year-old Swede delivered, continuing his world title charge with a dominant display against the tough Ukrainian.

Cherviak attempted to upset the hometown fighter in the early rounds, but Skoglund soon found his rhythm, and took control of the bout. In round five, Skoglund looked close to stopping the 34 year-old, pushing him back on to the ropes and landing heavy shots to the head and body.

The final round started at a frantic pace, as Skoglund, roared on by his loyal supporters, looked to bring the contest to a premature end, but Cherviak dug deep and was able to take the fight to the judges’ scorecards. After twelve entertaining rounds, Skoglund was ahead 120-108, 120-108 and 119-109.

‘’It was a fantastic feeling to be able to fight and defend my title on Swedish soil,’’ said Skoglund. ‘’It really was a historic night, and I want to thank everyone who came out and supported me. I love each and every one of them.

‘’It was indescribable to walk into the arena to such an amazing reception. It’s the best audience I ever had, and probably the best I will ever have. I’m proud to fight in front of these people, and to represent Sweden and Nyköping on such a big stage. This was a gigantic step forward for me and for Swedish boxing.

‘’Cherviak was tough, as I expected him to be, but I stuck to my game plan and I got the job done. He is a good boxer, but I was clearly the better boxer with the better tactics.’’

Cherviak, who more than played his part in evening’s action, was humble in defeat, admitting he had a loss to a superior opponent.

‘’Erik is a very talent boxer,’’ said Cherviak. ‘’And he has a lot of experience for someone of his age. He made it difficult for me, and executed his game plan well. He was the better man on the night. Obviously, I’m disappointed, but I’m thankful for the opportunity, and I wish Erik every success in the future.’’

Promoter Nisse Sauerland admits he was blown away by the support shown for Skoglund from the Swedish fans, and believes the young fighter has a bright future ahead of him.

‘’What a spectacular show,’’ said Sauerland. ‘’The fights, the fans, the atmosphere – nothing could have gone better. This was a great advert for boxing, and the perfect night to announce the return of boxing to Sweden. Erik was sensational, he shows a maturity far beyond his years. No doubt about it, we are looking at a future super star.’’

In an undercard stacked with talent, the Swede’s shone brightest. Anthony ‘Can You Dig It?’ Yigit proved why he is one of the most exciting fighters in Europe with an action packed eight-round unanimous points victory over former EBU-EU title challenger Chaquib Fadli.

‘’It was an entertaining fight,’’ said the Stockholm fighter. ‘’Fadli is a tough guy. He belongs with the best in Europe, but so do I. It was wonderful to box in Sweden, nothing beats boxing at home. The audience here were simply fantastic.”

Further down the card, heavyweight hope Otto Wallin scored an impressive points victory over former Russian Champion Vladimir Goncharov, Sven Fornling overcame his Norwegian opponent Simen Smaadal, who absorbed a lot of punishment, with a one sided points victory, amateur star Hampus Henrikkson starting his pro career in style with a first-round KO win over Ivan Sakic, Simon Henriksson claimed his fourth victory against Jakub Horvath (UD4), and Johanna Rydberg outworked her Russian opponent Evgeniya Zablotskaya to remain undefeated (UD4).

MARVIN QUINTERO IS THE NEW VACANT NABF LIGHTWEIGHT TITLE CHAMPION WITH TKO VICTORY OVER JEFFERY FONTANEZ IN A MEXICO VS. PUERTO RICO BATTLE AT SPECIAL EDITION OF LA FIGHT CLUB

LOS ANGELES (Sept. 18, 2015) – The September 18 special edition of LA FIGHT CLUB on Boxeo Estelar on Estrella TV was a celebration of Mexican Independence Day as Marvin “Cachorro” Quintero (28-6, 24 KOs) secured a technical knockout victory over Jeffery Fontanez (16-2, 12 KOs) in the main event at the Belasco Theater for the vacant NABF Lightweight Title.

The latest installment of LA FIGHT CLUB also attracted top names in entertainment including retired two-time world champion boxer Fernando Vargas; TV and radio personality Don Cheto; singer Luis Coronel; Pepe Garza; and “The Golden Boy” himself, Oscar De La Hoya, Chairman and CEO of Golden Boy Promotions. They were joined by Golden Boy Promotions’ future world champion fighters and top prospects including Joseph “Jojo” Diaz Jr., Christian “Chimpa” Gonzalez, Julian “El Camaron” Ramirez, Jason Quigley, Abraham “Chamaco” Lopez, Angel Bojado, Everton Lopes, Johnathan Navarro and Joshua Franco.

The Fontanez vs. Quintero battle thrilled the crowd with its action as a classic Mexico vs. Puerto Rico rivalry, with the Quintero win exciting fans and extending the Mexican Independence Day celebrations from earlier in the week. Quintero knocked Fontanez down twice in the fifth round, showcasing exceptional power. Fontanez answered the count on both occasions, but after absorbing several hits, Fontanez’s corner ended the fight giving Quintero the technical knockout victory.

“It is very satisfying to have gotten a big win in the name of my country and add a win for Mexico against Puerto Rico. I feel proud of the work I have put in, my left hand was a big weapon for me tonight. This win is for the people of Mexico,” said Quintero.

“I knew Quintero was a very experienced fighter and because of that we trained hard to prepare. It was one of the best training camps of my career. I knew I was ahead on the cards but he threw a lucky left in the fifth round that I couldn’t recover from. It was just a lucky shot but I have respect for him [Quintero] as a fighter,” said Fontanez.

In the co-main event of the evening, newly minted Golden Boy Promotions fighter Carlos “The Solution” Morales (12-1-3, 6 KOs) faced the tough O’Nell Negron (11-2-2, 87 KOs) of Puerto Rico in a scheduled eight-round super featherweight bout. An even match in the beginning, Morales dominated the action landing his jab and straight right regularly. Negron absorbed Morales’ shots and continued to exchange with Morales, but after a series of unanswered blows, the referee stopped the fight in the seventh round. Morales secured the first victory via technical knockout for Mexico of the night, in another action-packed addition to the classic Mexico-Puerto Rico rivalry.

“I trained very hard and couldn’t be prouder to add a win for Mexico in the great rivalry. He was a tough fighter. He kept coming forward, but I was able to land my jab and straight right and really focused on working the body. I think my intelligence and variety of attack made a big difference in the fight,” said Morales.

“I had seen some tape of him before in a previous fight and I thought he was slower but today he surprised me with his speed. He kept me at a distance and I was unable to work the body like we planned. In the thirdor fourth round I felt like I hurt him but he was too fast and continued to counter keeping me at a distance. My dream doesn’t end here. If there is another chance to fight him, I would take it. I feel the fight was exciting and the people enjoyed it. We both won in giving the people a great fight,” said Negron.

In the first televised bout of the evening on Boxeo Estelar on Estrella TV, Oscar “El Jaguar” Negrete (11-0, 3 KOs) boxed brilliantly in the ring against Jose Estrella (14-8-1, 10 KOs) in an eight-round super bantamweight bout adding another technical knockout victory to his record. Negrete used movement and speed to land quick, accurate shots on Estrella throughout the fight. By the sixth round, Negrete’s quick hands and clean shots forced Estrella’s corner to stop the fight.

“Our strategy was to box in the early rounds and wear him down for a late knockout. He was standing straight up so I was able to catch him a lot with the straight right. I want to fight one or two more eight-round bouts then move up and fight for a title. I feel very confident after tonight’s performance.” said Negrete.

As part of The Ring TV’s live stream, newcomer Hector “El Finito” Tanajara (2-0, 1 KO) took on Antonio Martinez (3-5, 3 KOs) in a four-round lightweight bout and secured the second win of his career by unanimous decision. Tanajara calmly placed his shots, showing excellent combinations as well as patience in his attack. All three judges ruled the fight in favor of Tanajara by scores of 40-36.

“I knew I was in control throughout the fight and was looking to take him out. My jab was an effective weapon when I used it and I think had I used it more, it would have been a shorter night,” said Tanajara.

Los Angeles prospect Emilio Sanchez (10-0, 7 KOs) held onto his undefeated status with a win over Juan Sandoval (7-17-1, 4 KOs) of San Bernardino, Calif. in a six-round featherweight fight also part of The Ring TV’s live stream. Sanchez stalked Sandoval from the start, throwing powerful shots to the body and the head. Sanchez’s shots caused serious swelling on the eye of Sandoval forcing the referee to stop the bout after the second round, awarding Sanchez a technical knockout victory.

“I felt really good throughout the fight. Our strategy was to break him down, throwing hard combinations to the body and I felt I did that really well. I am pleased with the improvements I’ve made and look forward to getting back into the ring,” said Sanchez.

Francisco Esparza (1-0)of Las Vegas made his professional debut against Carlos Gonzalez (1-8) of Bell, Calif. with a unanimous decision in a four-round lightweight bout. The bout picked up right where the previous fight left off, seeing both fighters trade punches in the center of the ring at a frenetic pace. Esparza fared better in the exchanges, landing the harder shots and backing up Gonzalez with all three judges scoring the fight 38-36.

“Hearing the crowd cheer, hearing my name called with the victory, these are the moments I have worked for my whole life. He [Gonzalez] was a tough fighter. He kept coming forward but I’m a brawler. I love that type of up close and physical fight,” said Esparza.

Opening up The Ring TV’s live stream, Alejandro “Popo” Salinas (3-1, 3 KOs) of Youngstown, Ohio battled Oscar Duarte (3-0-1, 2 KOs) of Parral, Mexico in a four-round lightweight battle. Providing fireworks from the start, the two fighters traded shots from the opening bell. Duarte showed his power midway through the second round, dropping Salinas with a left hook. Salinas showed tremendous heart, meeting the count and continuing to battle. The competitive fight ended with a split decision victory in favor of Oscar Duarte.

“I felt good throughout the fight. My coach and I worked on making sure my combinations were sharp and I felt very strong. I felt my left hook was my best punch tonight. I was able to drop him with that shot and hurt him with it a couple of times during the fight,” said Duarte.

Camacho stops Gingras to capture light heavyweight title

LINCOLN, R.I. (Sept. 18th, 2015) – What was billed as the Fight of the Year in the northeast way before the first bell rang lived up to the billing Friday night as undefeated Angel Camacho Jr. stopped Rich Gingras in the eighth round of their main event bout at Twin River Casino to capture the New England and Universal Boxing Federation (UBF) International Light Heavyweight Titles.

The win extended Camacho’s unbeaten record to 15-0 with 6 KOs while Gingras – fighting for the first time in a year – dropped to 15-5-1. It was no doubt the biggest win of Camacho’s career, chopping down the gritty Gingras at the 1 minute, 57 second mark of the eighth round and ending a back-and-forth, see-saw battle worthy of all the pre-fight hype and accolades.

The scheduled 10-round main event was the headliner of CES Boxing’s “Mayhem” card. Using his height and reach to his advantage, Providence’s Camacho got off to a fast start, out-boxing Gingras and effectively circling his opponent to score early and often.

Once he solved the distance factor, Gingras, hailing from nearby Lincoln, began to close the gap and pound away at Camacho’s body, fighting back in the middle rounds to pull closer on the scorecards.

The tide turned when Gingras suffered a nasty cut over the left eye, which impaired his vision. He tried to fight through it – twice, in fact, with the ringside physician’s blessing – but Camacho began to take advantage in the seventh before closing it out in the eighth with a series of combinations that forced referee Joey Lupino to stop the fight.

Aside from the thrill of the highly anticipated main event, the night belonged to Worcester, Mass., junior middleweight Khiary Gray (9-0, 6 KOs), who his extended his first-round knockout streak and won his most impressive fight to date, stopping Texan Kenton Sippio-Cook (6-3) at the 2:02 mark of round No. 1 to capture the vacant UBF Northeast Title.

Gray came out swinging, landing early and often against the overwhelmed Sippio-Cook, who eventually hit the canvas courtesy of an overhand right and never made it back to his feet. Gray has now won each of his last six fights – all this year – by first-round knockout, an impressive streak that began in January when he stopped Jake Constant with a body shot at 1:20 mark.

Looking to carry the momentum from his big, come-from-behind win over Juan Rodriguez in July, Nick DeLomba (8-1) returned Friday to face fellow undefeated welterweight Gledwin Ortiz (3-0, 3 KOs) from the Bronx. The tall, rangy Ortiz pulled off the upset on the road, stopping DeLomba and handing the Cranston, R.I., native his first career loss via knockout at the 2:43 mark of the opening round.

Unlike his last fight, when he got up off the canvas and rebounded to win by knockout, DeLomba failed to survive an early knockdown Friday. With wobbly legs, DeLomba tried to gain his composure, but the relentless Ortiz continued to unload and finished DeLomba with a flurry of rights and lefts in the corner, forcing Lupino to stop the bout.

In an early candidate for Fight of the Night, Massachusetts junior welterweights Travis Demko (4-0) of Stoughton and Mohamed Allam (1-1) staged a back-and-forth, four-round war with Demko narrowly winning on all three scorecards, 39-37. Demko’s footwork and ability to stick and move kept Allam at bay, but Allam finally found his rhythm in the later rounds, cutting off the ring and temporarily slowing the pace of the fight. Demko’s work in the early rounds turned out to be the difference as he earned the win in his CES debut.

Worcester, Mass., junior welterweight Freddy Sanchez (6-0, 5 KOs) made quick of work of Boston’s Rafael Francis (0-6), stopping Francis at the 1:55 mark of the second round. Sanchez and Francis fought a year ago in Francis’ professional debut with Sanchez winning narrowly by a majority decision. This time, Francis didn’t have enough in the tank after agreeing to take the fight on 48 hours’ notice when Sanchez’s original opponent, Lazar Stojadinovic, withdrew due to illness Tuesday.

Also making his Twin River debut, New London heavyweight Cassius Chaney (4-0, 3 KOs) cruised past Maryland’s Alando Pugh (1-6-1), who was forced to quit due to a left shoulder injury at the 1:21 mark of the opening round.
