Camacho Jr. puts record on the line against Chatman

LINCOLN, R.I. (March 31st, 2015) — Chris Chatman admits he watched the video of Angel Camacho Jr.’s most recent fight in November against Paul Gonsalves to help him prepare for Friday’s showdown against Camacho at Twin River Casino. Camacho Jr. is glad his opponent is paying attention.

“That actually plays into my advantage,” said Camacho Jr., unbeaten in 13 professional fights. “Everyone knows that wasn’t the real me. I didn’t do what I was supposed to do that night.”

Camacho Jr. (13-0, 4 KOs) won, but also had to shake off plenty of rust in the process, three year’s worth of rust to be exact, leaving the Providence, R.I., native fatigued and out of sync during large stretches of the fight.

Chatman (12-4-1, 5 KOs), the hard-hitting Jersey City vet who’s made Rhode Island his second home in recent years, plans on finishing what Gonsalves started in the six-round co-feature of “The Revival,” presented by CES Boxing Friday, April 3rd, 2015.

“In that last, he gassed early,” Chatman said of Camacho Jr. “He slowed after the third round. A high-volume puncher like myself, that’ll work well for me.

“How long can he can keep me off him? That’s the question. The only person who could ever keep up with my output was Thomas [Falowo in 2013] and I’m shocked he could keep up. I don’t think Angel can do it.”

Working under the guidance of his new trainer – and brother-in-law – Brian Pennacchia, Camacho Jr. begs to differ.

“I have nothing to say about that,” Camacho Jr. said. “I’ll let my conditioning and hands speak for themselves.”

Both fighters insist conditioning won’t be an issue. Chatman has proven this to be the case over the course of his career, an impressive resume that includes wins over three previously unbeaten fighters, many of them in enemy territory.

While Providence is Camacho’s hometown, Chatman has created his own buzz in the Ocean State with a 3-1 career record at Twin River, including the aforementioned upset win over hometown favorite Falowo and a victory against Grady Brewer.

“I honestly consider Twin River my home turf,” Chatman said. “I love coming to Rhode Island. I’m going to get my some clams while I’m out there!”

First thing’s first, Chatman must handle business against the unblemished Camacho Jr., who has maintained a perfect record despite two separate three-year layoffs, proof that the ability to fight, adapt and compete at a high level never goes away.

Camacho Jr. fought under the guidance of Roland Estrada upon his return in November, but decided to switch gears with Pennacchia this time around, primarily out of convenience – “Roland’s on the other side of town and this just made sense to me,” Camacho Jr. said.

Switching trainers this often would unnerve most fighters, but Camacho Jr.’s style never really changes despite who’s working the corner or barking instructions. Why mess with “perfection”? Camacho Jr. has yet to lose, and he’s rarely been in danger, even in fights where he’s had to shake off rust or overcome a slow start.

“There won’t be any changes to my style,” Camacho Jr. said. “I’m a boxer and my style is to box and move. I’m going to pick [Chatman] apart until he starts getting frustrated, and when he gets frustrated I’m going to capitalize on his openings.”

“He’s patient and he’s a very good boxer,” Chatman said of Camacho Jr., “but I’ve noticed in his last few fights since 2012 he’s a hell of a lot less active and a lot less dependent on his jab. At 168 pounds, he’s trying to fight like a junior middleweight. He’s not evolving into the fighter he needs to be. It’ll be hard for him to adapt Friday.”

Chatman has fought most of his career between 154 and 160 pounds, but has decided to jump up in weight at 168 to take advantage of his considerable muscle mass and endurance. Without having to make a severe weight cut in preparation for Friday’s fight, he insists he’s stronger than ever.

“I’ve been dropping my sparring partners,” he said. “Only two of them have gone the distance. I’ve been stopping everybody. It feels great not having to starve myself. I feel really good. I feel really strong.”

Tickets for “The Revival” are priced at $40.00, $100.00 and $125.00 and available for purchase online at www.cesboxing.com or www.twinriver.com, by phone at 401-724-2253/2254 or at the Twin River Players Club. All fights and fighters are subject to change.

“The Revival” features the 10-round main event between Universal Boxing Federation (UBF) female super bantamweight world champion Shelly Vincent (13-0, 1 KO) of Providence and three-time world-title challenger Christina Ruiz (7-7-3, 4 KOs) of San Antonio, Tex. Both Vincent’s UBF title and the vacant International Boxing Association (IBA) world title will be on the line.

Undefeated welterweight Nick DeLomba (6-0) of Cranston, R.I., battles Hartford, Conn., vet Joe Wilson Jr. (3-1) in a six-round special attraction while unbeaten Worcester, Mass., junior welterweight Freddy Sanchez (3-0, 2 KOs) faces Briam Granado (1-0, 1 KO) of New Bedford, Mass., in a four-round bout.

Also on the undercard, unbeaten middleweight prospect Khiary Gray-Pitts (5-0, 3 KOs) of Worcester battles New Haven vet Greg McCoy (3-4-1, 1 KO).

Providence junior middleweight Luis Felix (0-4) faces New Bedford, Mass., up-and-comer Ray Oliveira Jr. (3-0, 2 KOs) in a four-rounder and cruiserweight Jean Pierre Augustin (4-0, 2 KOs) of Lawrence, Mass., makes his CES and Twin River debut in a four-round bout against veteran Solomon Maye (1-4, 1 KO) of New Haven. Augustin is fighting under the guidance of his new trainer, five-time world champ Vinny Paz, whom he met last year during filming of the Chad Verdi-produced Paz biopic Bleed For This.

ASHLEY THEOPHANE LAS VEGAS BLOG: GETTING ON WITH IT

ashley-theophane
This is my twelfth year as a professional boxer. I’ve shared the ring with some accomplished boxers in that time; world champions Danny Garcia and DeMarcus Corley, world title challengers Delvin Rodriguez and Pablo Cesar Cano, European champion Jason Cook and British champion Lenny Daws. Anyone would say, some of the best of my era.
Fighting and winning in five different countries. St Lucia, USA, Germany, Luxembourg and England. It’s easily said, but believe me, seriously hard to accomplish. Many might say that these achievements are worthy of recognition, and some might even applaud.

It is a sad fact that very few British fighters come to America and hold their own, they tend to drown! The Americans don’t yet respect British fighters, but I’m one of a select few that has won their very hard earned respect.
Most fighters prefer the comforts of staying at home. I’ve found out that by going out to alien territory, with none of my fans in the arena, has brought the best out of me. Behind enemy lines!
When I started boxing in 1988 my dream was always to fight in America.
To fight the very best and to be at my best. As an 8 year old kid my dream was unthinkable. How was I going to do this? I’m from a poor and neglected part of London, CRIME filled, with low ambitions and opportunities very few and far between.
I’m living my childhood dream now. The number one fighter in the world is my boss.
Very few people set a goal and actually achieve it. THROUGH THE YEARS the dream has gotten bigger and bolder. At first the naysayers laughed at me but now many cheer me, and to my surprise and pleasure, some even take the time to inform me “just how great I am doing and how far I’ve come”.
I have to say that I’ve done nothing in my life that has surprised me, as I’ve always pushed myself despite the lack of financial backing, I’ve found a way.
A kid from Paddington, England witnessing greatness on a day to day basis. The brilliant private workouts I get to witness AND I get to see Floyd Mayweather at work. I get to pound the streets of Las Vegas with him. He gives me advice and tells me he’s got my back.
The years of sacrifice, determination and hard work have got me here. Don’t ever tell me I can’t do something. I’ve already made the impossible possible, and HERE WE GO AGAIN.
It still amazes me just how many people appear to ‘dislike’ Floyd Mayweather, it’s usually because they do not know him, and they will never know him because they dislike him.

ESPN FRIDAY NIGHT FIGHTS CARD SHAKES UP RED-HOT JUNIOR MIDDLEWEIGHT TONY HARRISON MOVES INTO MAIN EVENT PUTS UNDEFEATED RECORD ON THE LINE AGAINST MEXICO’S PABLO MUNGUIA TEVIN FARMER TO OPEN THE TRIPLE-HEADER AGAINST GABRIEL TOLMAJYAN FRIDAY, APRIL 17TH MOHEGAN SUN – UNCASVILLE, CT

New York, NY/Uncasville, CT (3/30/15) – The previously announced ESPN Friday Night Fights card has shaken up a bit. The card, being promoted by DiBella Entertainment in association with Fight Promotions Inc. and New Legend Boxing, at the beautiful Mohegan Sun in Uncasville, CT, was originally slated to be headlined by Sergey Derevyanchenko (4-0, 3KO’s) taking on Elvin Ayala (27-6-1, 12KO’s). With Ayala facing a legal situation, promoter Lou DiBella has elected to replace the feature bout, moving Derevyanchenko over to his April 10th ShoBox card, and sliding in red-hot undefeated junior middleweight Tony Harrison (20-0, 17KO’s) into the main event slot. Harrison is set to square off against Mexico’s Pablo Munguia (20-6, 11KO’s) in the 10-round feature bout of the evening.

The eagerly anticipated co-feature remains intact, with WBA #10-rated super featherweight Ryan Kielczweski (22-0, 6KO’s) putting his undefeated record on the line against Connecticut’s own Danny Aquino (16-2, 10KO’s) in an eight-round featherweight matchup and battle for New England bragging rights.

Opening up the triple-header is junior lightweight contender Tevin Farmer (18-4-1, 4KO’s) taking on Gabriel Tolmajyan (14-4-2, 3KO’s) in an eight-round 130lb. matchup.

Live coverage will begin at 10 p.m. ET on ESPN2 and will also be available through WatchESPN on computers, smartphones, tablets, Amazon Fire TV and Fire TV Stick, Apple TV, Chromecast, Roku, Xbox 360 and Xbox One via an affiliated video provider. In addition ESPN Deportes’ Noche de Combates will carry the fights live on broadband Spanish-language ESPN Deportes+.

“I want to thank Al Haymon and Lou DiBella for giving me this fight and I also want to thank ESPN for giving me another opportunity to display my talent to the world. Come April 17th, you are going to see another great performance by Tony Harrison. I am coming to put on a heck of a show and display my full arsenal. I know my opponent is tough and he has been in there with some pretty good guys, but I am coming in there in top shape. This is going to be an exciting fight for as long as it lasts, so get there early, get your popcorn ready, and don’t blink,” stated Harrison.

The 24-year-old Harrison, a former protégé of the late great Emanuel Steward, is as good as any up-and-coming prospect in the game right now, and is expected to begin moving into title contention this year. The bout on April 17th will be his second straight headlining bout on the ESPN network in just over a month. On March 6th, Harrison destroyed longtime fringe contender Antwone Smith, dropping Smith twice in the first round before getting the official stoppage in the second. Munguia is expected to be a stern test for Harrison, arguably his toughest to date. Munguia is 3-2 in his last five bouts, but those five opponents have had a combined record of 92-5-2. In his most recent bout in February of this year, Munguia dropped a razor-thin split decision to highly regarded former Cuban silver medalist Yudel Johnson. Munguia knows that a win on April 17th, on national TV, will propel him into the type of fights that he is looking for.

“I want to thank DiBella Entertainment and ESPN for this great opportunity to get my career back on track and moving in the direction I want it,” said Munguia. “I have 20 wins and on April 17, I will secure my 21st victory, the most important of my career. I believe April 17th will be the beginning of a great run for me and my career.”

It is hard to think of another fighter in recent memory that has had as drastic a career turnaround as Tevin Farmer has had.Three years ago, Farmer’s record stood at 7-4-1 and he was considered nothing more than a tough Philly fighter who was a good opponent to match against up-and-coming prospects. Fast-forward three years and 11 impressive wins later and Farmer has not only emerged as one of the prospects he was once put in against, but as a legitimate contender. In his most recent outing in January, his first fight since signing with DBE, Farmer easily defeated once-beaten Victor Chernous (15-1-1), winning a dominant eight-round unanimous decision. Farmer, in whom promoter Lou DiBella sees style comparisons to Pernell Whitaker, comes from a boxing family and has family ties to Hall-of-Famer Joe Gans, who was called the greatest lightweight boxer of all time by boxing historian and Ring Magazine founder Nat Fleischer.

Farmer is looking to build his own legacy and knows he has the talent and ability to compete against the best the 130lb. division has to offer, but he must first get by the hungry and determined Tolmajyan.

“April 17th is a very big fight for me, the biggest of my career. Every fight out from here on is the biggest fight of my life,” said Farmer. “Every time I step into the ring, I’m looking to make a statement. I have worked so hard to get to this point; I can’t let anyone take this away from me. I want to thank my manager Mark Cipparone and my trainers Raul Rivas and Rashiem Jefferson for believing in me and Lou DiBella and ESPN for giving me this opportunity. Come April 17th, I am going to be at my absolute best. April 17th is going to be the beginning of something special.”

Like Farmer, Tolmajyan’s record is deceiving. Tolmajyan has never been stopped in his career, and three of his four career losses have come against undefeated opponents, including fellow Farmer conqueror, and #1 contender, Jose Pedraza. Tolmajyan holds victories over three previously undefeated foes, including an eight-round decision win over world-rated contender and former featherweight world-title challenger Daulis Prescott.

Additional bouts on the card will be announced shortly.

Tickets are currently on sale and are priced at $100, $70 and $30 (subject to additional fees). Tickets can be purchased by visiting www.mohegansun.com or by calling Ticketmaster at 1-800-745-3000. Tickets may also be purchased by visiting the Mohegan Sun Box Office. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. ET with the first bout scheduled for 7:30 p.m. ET.

Wilson Jr., DeLomba stick to the game plan

LINCOLN, R.I. (March 30th, 2015) — Joe Wilson Jr. has a hard time putting his finger on what makes his upcoming opponent, Nick DeLomba, such a dangerous adversary.

“Truthfully, he’s awkward,” Wilson Jr. said.

“Awkward’s never easy,” DeLomba countered.

The six-round junior middleweight showdown between the unbeaten DeLomba (6-0) of Cranston, R.I., and the slick, elusive vet Wilson Jr. (3-1) of Hartford, Conn., is one of the most highly anticipated bouts on CES Boxing’s Friday, April 3rd, 2015 fight card, “The Revival,” at Twin River Casino.

Both are seasoned, well-trained fighters, efficient in their execution and capable of putting the “sweet” in the sweet science with their ability to turn a slugfest into a work of art. It’s a true pick ’em fight with the crafty DeLomba aiming to keep his perfect record intact while Wilson Jr. hopes to butt his way into the conversation among the best 154-pounders in New England.

“His coach already made a comment about [Wilson Jr.] going in there and fighting his type of fight,” DeLomba said. “We’re going to stick to our game plan and fight the way we know how to fight. It’s going to be a hell of a night.”

The idea of “sticking to the game plan” seems to be the theme of this six-round special attraction between DeLomba and Wilson Jr., but Wilson Jr.’s game plan might be different than what Rhode Island fans remember. Since his last appearance at Twin River, which came in his professional debut in 2013, Wilson Jr. has begun working with a new trainer, Hector Rosario. His longtime trainer, Paul Cichon, is still part of the team, working cuts on fight night and helping with film study and preparation, but Rosario has taken the reigns, fixing a few glitches in Wilson Jr.’s execution.

“He teaches me a lot,” Wilson Jr. said of Rosario. “If you watch my fight videos, you’ll see in this fight where I’ve progressed. My footing. Distance. Balance. A lot of sticking and moving. Staying on my toes. Boxing. When I first got to the pros, I just had a mindset that I could just adjust fight to fight, but that can backfire on you.

“If I stick to my game plan and box and jab, I can be unstoppable in this weight class.”

This will be Wilson Jr.’s second fight with Rosario, but his first official fight with Rosario guiding him from the beginning of camp until fight night since the two only worked together sporadically when Wilson Jr. beat Jimmy Smith in Boston in July. Cichon’s influence is still evident, too, especially outside of the ropes.

“Paul gives me a lot of pointers, showing me what I’m doing wrong,” Wilson Jr. said, “and he’s watched a lot of Nick’s videos to see what Nick’s strengths are and how he would pick up on my weaknesses and where Nick would counteract.”

It all adds up to what Wilson Jr. promises will be a “new-look” fighter come April 3rd.

“You’ll see me more calm, cool and collected,” Wilson Jr. said. “You won’t see me rushing or falling all over the place.”

DeLomba can relate to the importance of proper coaching and guidance in the gym. He worked with several trainers at the start of his career until finding a new home with Victor Fagnant, who has helped DeLomba with his accuracy and, more importantly, his conditioning, which has been the difference for DeLomba in his last two wins.

“For a while, it was tough for me to get my feet grounded,” DeLomba said. “Now I’m with Vic and we’re with each other every day. No days off. We’re like a big family.”

Fagnant has also worked on DeLomba’s strength, which DeLomba says is underrated despite the fact he hasn’t scored a knockout yet in six pro fights.

“It’s not even necessarily the power, but more so the technique and the form,” he said. “I’m sitting down on my punches now and my toes aren’t all over the place.”

The biggest challenge for DeLomba on Friday might be Wilson Jr.’s size and reach. Wilson Jr. has a marginal height advantage, but a much longer reach, and he likes to keep his opponents at the end of his jab, hence the nickname “Jabbin’ Joe.” Like Wilson Jr., DeLomba is confident in his game plan, but understands there’s always room to adapt. Sometimes it’s a necessity.

“He’s a lankier opponent than I’m used to, but I can adapt to anyone at any given time in the ring,” DeLomba said. “He might not fight Round 2 the way he fights Round 1. We’re ready to make changes.

“We’ll have to fight a little different, but this is a good step up for us. We know they’ll have a good game plan coming into this fight.”

Added Wilson Jr.: “What I do best is jab and box, and that’s how this fight will be. A lot of fists will be thrown, but we’ll see who the better boxer is.”

Unbeaten Providence super middleweight Angel Camacho Jr. (13-0, 4 KOs) faces the dangerous Chris Chatman (12-4-1, 5 KOs) of Jersey City, N.J., in the six-round co-feature.

The undercard of “The Revival” also features several noteworthy regional showdowns, including a four-round junior welterweight bout between unbeaten Worcester, Mass., native Freddy Sanchez (3-0, 2 KOs) and Briam Granado (1-0, 1 KO) of New Bedford, Mass., while unbeaten middleweight prospect Khiary Gray-Pitts (5-0, 3 KOs) of Worcester battles New Haven vet Greg McCoy (3-4-1, 1 KO).

Highlight Reel KO’s from Gavronski and Pineda Highlight Explosive Battle at the Boat 100 card

Tacoma, Washington (March 29th 2015) From the moment the opening bell sounded, fans packed into the sold out I-5 showroom in Tacoma knew they were in for a night to remember. With six incredible matchups on the card, Battle at the Boat 100 lived up to the hype. Mixing some razor thin decisions with brutal knockouts, Battle at the Boat lived up to it’s reputation as the premier boxing showcase on the west coast.

Headlining this historic night of fights was Mike “Imagine Me” Gavronski (17-1 11KO’s) taking on Maurice Louishomme (8-2-1 4KO’s) in a 10-round bout. Both men came to fight, as they immediately marched to the center of the ring and began exchanging blows. Back and forth they went, with each fighter scoring a knockdown in the 2nd. As the fight wore on, Gavronski began to find his groove, landing stiff jabs followed by huge right hands to the head. After wobbling his opponent to end the 5th, Gavronski ended things in the very next round, sending Louishomme to the canvas for the final time. The fight marks Gavronski’s third win in row, all coming at Battle at the Boat events.

In the semi-main event of the evening, undefeated Buckley native Jeremy McCleary (6-1) was unable to keep his unblemished professional record alive as he took on heavy-handed Oregonian, Marcello Gallardo (5-1-2 2KO’s.) McCleary was quick on his feet and fluid with his hands, but was unable to fully recover after taking multiple hard shots from his opponent. Eventually, the hard charging style of the more experienced Gallardo proved too much for McCleary, as the referee was forced to step in and stop the fight only 11 seconds into the 4th round.

Also featured on this incredible card was the pride of Toppenish, Washington, Marcelino Pineda (5-1 5KO’s.) Coming off his first loss as a pro, Pineda was eager to bounce back and regain his winning formula against the much more experienced Paul Mpendo (8-13-4 4KO’s.). It took Pineda a couple rounds to get into a rhythm, with the crafty veteran working him over with crisp jabs to the head and body. But by the time the bell sounded for the 3rd round, Pineda came alive. With a beautiful flurry followed by a thunderous left, Mpendo found himself through the ropes, only halfway still in the ring. The referee began his 10-count, but Mpendo’s corner could see that their fighter wasn’t getting up, and proceeded to throw in the towel before the ref could reach 10.

Three undercard bouts rounded out the incredible action inside the Emerald Queen Casino on Saturday night. Those results are as follows:

Andres Reyes (3-0) def. Ricardo Maldonado (4-3) via Unanimous Decision (All three judges scored the bout 39-37)

Daryl Gardner (2-5-1 2KO’s) vs. Jason Davis (12-10-2 3KO’s) ends in a Majority Draw (39-37 Davis, 38-38, 38-38)

Sean Gee (1-0) def. Omar Avelar (3-12 2KO’s) by Unanimous Decision (40-36, 40-36, 39-37)

MATT HAMILL TAKES ILL, WITHDRAWS FROM WSOF 19 CO-MAIN EVENT BOUT WITH THIAGO SILVA; TEDDY HOLDER STEPS UP TO FACE SILVA

Phoenix, Ariz. (March 28, 2015) – Hours before his scheduled rematch and World Series of Fighting (www.wsof.com) co-main event matchup with Thiago Silva (16-3), wrestling standout Matt “The Hammer” Hamill (11-5) has withdrawn from the bout due to illness.

“We are obviously very disappointed that Matt Hamill will not be able to compete tonight but, under no circumstance, would we ask a fighter to enter the WSOF cage if he or she sustains an injury or comes down with any kind of illness prior to a scheduled bout,” said WSOF President Ray Sefo.

“We are appreciative that Teddy Holder was willing to step up and accept a new opponent and formidable challenge on such short notice,” continued Sefo.

The re-shuffling of the lineup will also see Holder’s original opponent, Jake Heun (7-3), matched with a new adversary in Clifford Starks (10-2), who had been slated to face Eddie Arizmendi (15-6) in a WSOF 19 preliminary bout. MARCOS GALVAO CLAIMS BELLATOR BANTAMWEIGHT CHAMPIONSHIP WITH SECOND-ROUND SUBMISSION VICTORY OVER FORMER CHAMPION JOE WARREN

HACKERVILLE. Okla. – March 27, 2015 – Joe Warren (12-4) may very well be “The Baddest Man on the Planet,” but Marcos Galvao (17-6-1) is the new Bellator MMA Bantamweight World Champion.

In a rematch of a controversial 2011 affair, Galvao earned a verbal submission win after a kneebar forced Warren to scream out in pain. The two met in the headlining contest of Friday’s “Bellator: Warren vs. Galvao” event at Winstar World Casino in Thackerville, Okla.

The action was fast-paced from the opening bell with both fighters finding success. It was Warren’s takedowns that served as the primary offense, but Galvao always seemed to find an answer. He would make Warren pay in the second.

As the fight hit the floor again early in the second frame, Galvao transitioned to a kneebar, and as he applied the hold, Warren screamed out in pain, earning an intervention from referee John McCarthy 45 seconds into the second round. The contest was waved off via verbal submission, and Galvao was awarded the win and the Bellator MMA Bantamweight World Title.
The night’s co-main event saw L.C. Davis (23-6) and Hideo Tokoro (32-28-2) combine for an instant classic and a candidate for “Fight of the Year”, with Davis eventually earning a hard-fought split-decision victory scored 29-28 Tokoro, 29-28 twice Davis. The action was fast-paced from start to finish, with both men finding success in brutal striking exchanges, as well as slick grappling sequences. It was the type of fight which truly produces no loser, but Davis did just enough to get the official victory.

“The guy has fought the best,” Davis said of Tokoro. “I knew he was going to be tough. I thought I was going to put him away but I wasn’t able to; hats off to him.

“Next fight, I would like a title shot or a No. 1 contender.”

Tokoro admitted he disagreed with the razor-thin call but declined to blame anyone other than himself.

“I don’t agree with the split-decision, but I have to respect the judges’ decision,” Tokoro said. “I think there were many things I could’ve improved in the fight, but I think I did very well with my wrestling.”

In a light heavyweight contest, Francis Carmont (23-10) earned a decision win over Guilherme Viana (6-2), but it certainly didn’t come easy. After nearly finishing Viana in the second round with strikes, Carmont found himself defending a series of choke attempts in the third. Carmont’s defense was sound, and was granted a decision win, 29-28 on all three cards.

In the night’s first main-card contest, Ryan Couture (10-3) picked up a quick submission win over Dakota Cochrane (18-8), earning the tap at the 3:23 mark in the first round. It was Cochrane who initiated the grappling game, but Couture made him pay by moving to his back and sinking in a rear-naked choke that ended the fight.

Rashad Coulter (5-1) wrapped up the preliminary card with an impressive first-round TKO of Jeremiah O’Neal (13-25). The Bellator MMA newcomer overwhelmed his opponent with heavy punches and brutal knees to the body, scoring the finish by strikes just 1:44 into the opening round.

In a spirited featherweight matchup, Emmanuel Sanchez (10-1) dominated early and then survived a late rally attempt from a game Alejandro Villalobos (17-4) to walk away with a decision win, 30-27, 29-28 and 29-28.

Sean Holden (3-1) couldn’t quite get a finish over Tim Roman (2-2), but he did just about everything he could to pick up a victory over fellow welterweight Roman. Dominating the action from start to finish, Holden ended the first round with a deep rear-naked choke attempt and finished the third punching away in full mount, but Roman simply wouldn’t go away. Still, Holden was awarded a clear win, 30-27 on all three judges’ cards.

In middleweight action, Neal Ewing’s wrestling game proved too strong for Logan Nail (1-1). Ewing (6-0) took the fight to the floor repeatedly throughout the three-round affair, and while he was never especially close to finishing the fight, he cruised to a decision win 29-28, 30-27 and 30-27.

Although Stephen Banaszak (4-4) missed weight for a planned featherweight matchup with Brad Mitchell (4-2), he still picked up an impressive submission win. Banaszak declined to engage his opponent on the feet, instead searching for takedown opportunities at every turn. The strategy worked, as Banaszak picked up just the second omo plata win in Bellator MMA history, tapping out Mitchell at the 2:51 mark of the second round.

In flyweight action Klayton Mai (7-1) missed on early opportunity to finish Xavier Siller (5-4) via rear-naked choke but went back to the position later in the opening round. While he couldn’t quite get the choke, he adjusted the hold to a neck crank and scored the submission at the 3:55 mark of the first.

In the night’s first contest, bantamweight George Pacurariu (9-4) used a beautiful hip toss to throw opponent J.P. Cole (2-3) to the floor, where he immediately locked in a modified armbar to score the submission at the 2:59 mark of the first frame.

UFC 189 World Championship Tour Quotes – North American Wrap-Up

ufc_title-belt_206
Las Vegas – Undisputed UFC® featherweight champion Jose Aldo and challenger Conor McGregor are embarking on a world press tour spanning 10 cities in five countries over the course of 12 days to promote their upcoming world title bout at UFC® 189: ALDO vs. McGREGOR on Saturday, July 11 at MGM Grand Garden Arena to highlight International Fight Week. The event also features Robbie Lawler defending his UFC welterweight championship for the first time against No. 2 Rory MacDonald.

JOSE ALDO:

UFC 189 World Championship Tour – North American Wrap-Up – March 26 & 27

“Everything he (Conor) says is pretty strange to me. I’m ready for anything; I know what he’s going to do so I really don’t mind. I’m ready for anything he says or anything he does.”

“I’ve been the champion for a long time. They’re all going to talk, but I’m going to (continue) my reign and they will all fall.”

“I don’t take it the unprofessional way, I’m pretty professional. I just let him (Conor) do what he does, but when the fight comes I’m going to win. That’s what I do; I’ve been a champion all of my life. I’m going to go in there and win and keep the belt.”

“Everything is talked about (regarding moving up to lightweight). I already talked to Dana, so after this fight we’ll figure out what is going to happen.”

“I don’t really care how the fight goes, I’m going to win. My whole career, that’s how it goes, I go in there and win the fight. I don’t (predict) anything.”

“After this fight, I’m going to win, I’m going to go home, he’s going to go home crying and my pockets are going to be full of money.”

CONOR McGREGOR:

UFC 189 World Championship Tour – North American Wrap-Up – March 26 & 27

“They are not lines or nothing. I’m not trying to say anything as a line. I’m just saying what I am going to do to him. I’ll say it to him now and I’ll show him later.”

“Before I came along, he (Jose) was co-main event to the bantamweights. Now, we’re on private jets going all over North America, all over the world. Even top-15 featherweights are headlining cards now. It’s the McGregor division, make no mistake about it. If I leave, and go to the lightweight division, the featherweights go back to the prelims, it’s that simple.”

“It’s like in the jungle, one king gets old, he starts getting sloppy, he starts stagnating then a young gorilla comes up and kills him and takes everything he owns. That’s what is happening here.”

“It’s (media) part of the business, it’s something you must fall in love with. I honestly see it as a separate discipline. There’s boxing, there’s wrestling, there’s jiu jitsu, but there’s also media obligations – that is a separate discipline. Fighters can be broke under that spotlight, it can drain them and they lose the fight before it even begins, so it is something that I have learned to fall in love with. Not any particular part of it, just in general I have learned to accept it and become comfortable with it; that is what I am about; I become comfortable in the uncomfortable.”

“F— show business. This is the fight business.”

“Any man that makes the walk through the gate and steps in at any level, I don’t care if it’s in a small hall or it is amateur, if you step in you have my respect.”

“It’s good to come here (NYC), I find it fascinating how Ireland – we’re a nation of about 4.5 million – yet, we spread all over the world. When I come here I see Ireland everywhere. We literally built this city, so it’s good to be back.”

ROBBIE LAWLER:

UFC 189 World Championship Tour – North American Wrap-Up – March 26 & 27

“It was awesome to be in New York with these fans. They are amazing and really energetic to the point where they are still hanging around after the press conference. Their energy is excellent and helps in pumping up the fight.”

“I can’t wait to get back on the grind for this upcoming fight. This is what I love to do. I fight because it’s how I live. I’ve been doing this for 15 years and the competition is what I love. I love the sport.”

“It’s going to be an awesome fight (between Jose and Conor). Look what these guys brought to the table; look at these fans out here going crazy, this is awesome.”

“It’s nice to be a part of this. I’m a laid back guy so it’s nice for Conor and Jose to put on a show here. Come July 11th, I’ll be the one putting on a show.”

“I don’t really pay much attention to anyone else. I concentrate on myself; it makes life easier and let everyone else decide those things (matchups). I worry about myself and what I can control which is working hard and staying humble.”

“I don’t really care where I fight on the card. I’ll fight first, I’ll fight in the back, I’ll fight in the alley I don’t care. I’m not here to be the main event or this or that. I’m here to put on a show and beat people up and that’s what I concentrate on. I don’t really worry about where I’m at on the card.”

RORY MacDONALD:

UFC 189 World Championship Tour – North American Wrap-Up – March 26 & 27

“It’s an honor to be in this International Fight Week card, but this is not what drives me. I have never been so focused. I will show my best on July 11th. Lawler is internationally respected. A very good fighter, I feel people from Toronto will respect him a lot.”

“I can’t pinpoint anything. Both my losses were huge for my growing. Identifying weaknesses, not only technically but mentally has been a big part of it. I’m thankful for all the experiences I’ve had in MMA – the ups and the downs, all of it is a blessing and I’m happy to be here.”

“I’ll fight anybody, he’d (Conor) have a tough fight with me I think.”

“I feel very confident with my skillset in every martial art discipline. Wherever the fight goes I feel confident. I take a very similar approach to Robbie, I worry about myself and not my opponents and I prepare myself for war.”

“Every experience I gain confidence, more and more confidence, with my growth in this sport. Not only the evolution of my techniques in the gym but also my victories in the cage.”

“I have fire in my veins. It’s something I was born with and I live with.”

Regarding bringing the welterweight title back to Tristar where Georges St. Pierre held the belt for six years: “Everyone wants the title back in the gym and I’m going to go get it.”

GOLDEN BOY FILES SUIT AGAINST JHONNY GONZALEZ AND PROMOCIONES DEL PUEBLO

jhonny_gonzalez_homedepot
LOS ANGELES, (March 27, 2015) Boxer Jhonny Gonzalez and his Mexican promoter Promociones del Pueblo conspired with manager/promoter Al Haymon to violate Golden Boy’s exclusive rights to promote Gonzalez, a bombshell complaint filed today against the fighter and the promotional company contends.

Despite Golden Boy’s repeated attempts, Gonzalez, Promociones del Pueblo and Haymon repeatedly refused to put on tomorrow night’s fight between Gonzalez and Gary Russell, Jr., until they cut Golden Boy out of the process, clearly violating the agreement between the boxer and promoter.

“Golden Boy’s contract with Jhonny Gonzalez couldn’t be clearer – the company has exclusive promotional rights for two years or four fights, and neither of those milestones has been reached to date,” said Golden Boy Spokesman Stefan Friedman. “Furthermore, the motive behind the defendants adamant and longtime refusal to match Gonzalez with Gary Russell, Jr is now plain for the world to see. We will vigorously fight to ensure our contract is enforced.”

Golden Boy is seeking damages of no less than $1 million and for the court to enforce the company’s existing contract with Gonzalez.

According to the complaint:

“In December 2013, Golden Boy entered into a written agreement with Gonzalez and DPP wherein Golden Boy obtained the exclusive right to promote Gonzalez’s professional boxing matches throughout the world for a period of two years beginning on the first bout conducted pursuant to the agreement, or four fights, whichever comes first (the “Agreement”). The Agreement further provides that Gonzalez will not take part in any professional boxing match prior to the first bout conducted pursuant to the Agreement.

In August, 2014, Golden Boy proposed that Gonzalez fight Gary Russell, Jr., a promising featherweight boxer in either November or December of that year. DPP initially ignored this proposal and then rejected it, preferring to have Gonzalez fight a lesser opponent, Jose Arce, in Mexico in October.

Thereafter, Golden Boy continued to try and find appropriate fights for Gonzalez. However, DPP consistently refused the fights proposed by Golden Boy for Gonzalez.

In February, 2015, it became clear why DPP was refusing all of the fights proposed by Golden Boy for Gonzalez. DPP was conspiring with Russell’s manager/promoter, Al Haymon, to put together a fight between Gonzalez and Russell in which Golden Boy would not be involved.”

KELL BROOK, JO JO DAN MAKE WEIGHT FOR IBF WELTERWEIGHT TITLE FIGHT TOMORROW/SATURDAY FROM SHEFFIELD, ENGLAND LIVE ON SHOWTIME®

Kell Brook
SHEFFIELD, England (March 27, 2015) – Defending IBF Welterweight World Champion and hometown favorite Kell Brook and No. 1 challenger Jo Jo Dan made weight Friday.

Tomorrow/Saturday, SHOWTIME Sports® will present the Sky Sports telecast of Brook vs. Dan live on SHOWTIME (6:15 p.m. ET/3:15 p.m. PT) from the Motorpoint Arena in Sheffield, England. Sky Sports’ Jim Watt and Nick Halling will call the action from ringside.

Brook, of Sheffield, weighed 145½ pounds for his first title defense; Dan, a Romanian who now lives in Montreal, Canada, tipped the scales at 146¼ pounds.

Brook (33-0, 22 KOs) will defend the IBF 147-pound crown he took from previously undefeated Shawn Porter last August on SHOWTIME. Two weeks later, Brook was hospitalized with career-threatening injuries after getting stabbed in the thigh during a holiday in Spain.

Dan (34-2, 18 KOs) has won five in a row and eight of his last nine. He is the first Romanian- based Canadian to compete in a world title fight in England since Lucian Bute lost his IBF super middleweight crown to Carl Froch in five rounds in 2012.

Later Saturday evening on SHOWTIME CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING® (10 p.m. ET/7 p.m. PT), WBC Featherweight Champion Jhonny Gonzalez (57-8, 48 KOs), of Mexico City, will defend his 126-pound belt against quick-fisted southpaw Gary Russell Jr. (25-1, 14 KOs), of Capitol Heights, Md. In the co-feature, from The Pearl at Palms Casino Resort in Las Vegas, undefeated world-ranked Jermell “Iron Man” Charlo (25-0, 11 KOs), of Houston, faces the more experienced once-beaten Vanes Martirosyan (35-1-1, 21 KOs), of Glendale, Calif., in a 10-round bout for the WBO Intercontinental super welterweight championship.

(Selected press conference quotes):

KELL BROOK, IBF Welterweight Champion
“Every day has been a challenge, but we have done it. It’s amazing for me to defend the world title in Sheffield. I will be there knowing that I was meant to do this and I belong at the elite level.

“I’ve come a long way, fighting on undercards and in leisure centres to packing out this arena as a world champion. It took me a long time to get that belt and there is no way on earth that Jo Jo Dan is taking it off me, not a prayer. I am going in there to excite; you’ll see flash and power. I’ve kept the fans waiting too long to fight again and I owe them a big performance. If Jo Jo does what he says he’s going to do and bring the fight to me, the fans are in for a treat because you know how I fight.

“He looks like a man that has come to win. He’s the mandatory challenger like I was against [Shawn] Porter and I took the title off him. It’s every fighter’s dream to challenge for a world title and to take it, so I know that he’s put in 100 percent in the gym and he will leave it all in the ring tomorrow night.

“I would never overlook Jo Jo. It’s happened too many times in boxing that fighters are thinking about another fight and they lose the one in front of them. I am focused on him and making sure I take care of business. He’ll bring his best and I will bring my best, and I’ll show everyone why I am special. I am looking to knock him out.”

JO JO DAN, IBF No. 1 Contender and Mandatory Challenger
“I feel great and I am in the best shape of my life. I cannot wait for tomorrow.

“I know what Kell’s strengths and weaknesses are and I’ll show that in the ring. He was impressive against Porter but I am ready to adjust to whatever he can bring and I am ready for 12 hard rounds.

“I am concentrating on Kell Brook. I will get booed, he will get cheered — I don’t care about that, I’m so confident of winning that title.”
