Braehmer vs. Krasniqi kick-off press conference – quotes

On March 21, it is ‘The Moment of Truth’ as WBA World Light Heavyweight Champion Juergen Braehmer (45-2, 33 KOs) takes on the WBA number one challenger Robin Krasniqi (43-3, 16 KOs) in an all-German showdown at the StadtHalle in Rostock.

Ahead of their world championship clash, the two fighters came face-to-face at a kick-off press conference yesterday in Warnemuende, just a few kilometers away from the arena, where the fight is going to take place.

The Champion, Braehmer appeared in a confident mood, as he prepares to return to the ring following his record-breaking 55 second knockout of Pawel Glazewski in his last world title defense.

“Krasniqi has earned his shot,” said the 36 year-old southpaw. “He is number one in the WBA rankings. I’m happy to prove myself against him in this domestic showdown, which will have all of Germany talking. I will as always prepare to for the full 12 rounds, but if the opportunity arises, I will not hesitate to make it another early night.”

Krasniqi is respectful of the champion’s status, but remains eager to claim his first world title and avenge the amateur losses of his coach Dirk Dzemski.

“It’s a big honor to share the ring with a prolific fighter like Braehmer,” said the Munich-based boxer. “He was already a top-notch boxer, when I started my professional career. It would mean a lot for me to win and claim my first world championship against him. Especially as my coach Dirk Dzemski was beaten twice by Braehmer in the amateurs – I will avenge those losses for him.”

Promoter Kalle Sauerland has labelled the domestic world championship clash as the “Dawning of an golden era for German boxing”, and is looking forward to a memorable encounter at the StadtHalle in Rostock.

“On March 21, we have the WBA World Champion against the WBA number one. This is a chance for Juergen to prove why he belongs at the top. Since his comeback in early 2013, Juergen has excited the masses with his performances. Last time around, he set the record for fastest KO in a world title fight in light heavyweight history. In Rostock, Braehmer will show his class inside the ring once again.”

Starting February 3rd, Tickets for the WBA World Light Heavyweight Championship clash between Braehmer and Krasniqi will be available via tickethall.de.

Promoter Cedric Kushner passes away at age 66

Promoter Cedric Kushner passed away at age 66 on Thursday from a Heart Attack in New York City.

“I got a call and I had to go to the hospital because he had a massive heart attack,” said promoter Lou DiBella, one of Kushner’s closest friends for more than 25 years. “His brain had been affected. I knew he wouldn’t have wanted to live like that. I got in the car, and by the time I got to the hospital, he had passed. Ced and I went back to my first week in boxing over 25 years ago. We have a lot of history. He was a dear friend and one of the great characters in boxing.”

“For a long time, Ced was one of the most powerful promoters in the world. You can’t even count the number of world champions and top contenders he promoted,” said DiBella, who got to know Kushner when he bought fights from him as a senior vice president at HBO during the late 1980s and 1990s. “Ced had like 10 houses and 35 cars at one time, but he made some bad business decisions and he fell off the mountaintop. But he had a lot of friends in this business, and he was a beloved figure in this sport.”

“He had this [South African] accent that sounded refined and educated, but he barely got out of grade school,” DiBella said. “He was shining shoes and cleaning the pool at the Fontainebleau hotel in Miami and scalping concert tickets. And he became one of the biggest promoters in the music business. From there he got involved in boxing and was one of the biggest promoters in the world.”

Kushner promoted fighters such as Shane Mosley, Virgil Hill, Angel Manfredy, Vuyani Bungu and Welcome Ncita, but he made his name in the heavyweight division and became one of the regular promoters who worked with HBO.

Kushner’s syndicated television series, “Heavyweight Explosion,” became a breeding ground for numerous contenders and titleholders in the 1990s and 2000s. Often they would fight on “Heavyweight Explosion” before moving on to major fights, and when they would eventually lose, Kushner would return them to the series, build them back up and get them another big fight.

The heavyweights he promoted included a who’s who of the era, including Hasim Rahman, Shannon Briggs, Oleg Maskaev, Chris Byrd, the late Corrie Sanders, Ike Ibeabuchi, David Izon, Derrick Jefferson, Kirk Johnson, Jameel McCline and many others.

In 2001, Kushner was on the top of the boxing world when he counted then-heavyweight champion Rahman and welterweight champion Mosley, the pound-for-pound king at the time, as his cornerstone fighters. Mosley had upset Oscar De La Hoya in June 2000 to win the welterweight title, and in April 2001, Rahman pulled off a massive upset to win the heavyweight championship by knocking out Lennox Lewis in the fourth round. Making the crowning moment of Kushner’s career even more special was that Rahman’s championship win came in South Africa.

“His family was his boxing family,” DiBella said.

“Ced was a character but a good man,” said Top Rank matchmaker Bruce Trampler, a friend of Kushner’s for more than 30 years. “He had a great sense of humor and sly insightful way about him. His perception of the fight game was unique. He had many triumphs and a few low blows thrown at him. Recent years had been very difficult for Ced. My pleasure to have known him.”

“He’d hold court, and everyone would listen to his racy, raunchy stories. We had a lot of laughs. I miss those days,” DiBella said. “This is another one of those days that’s a sad day, when the sport of boxing got a little less colorful. Ced had a penchant for the dark side. He liked his women of the evening, and he would tell stories that would have everyone rolling around. Nobody was funnier to sit down with. Everyone would listen to the stories Cedric told.

“I saw him a week or two ago, and he looked terrible. But he said, ‘I’m gonna have one more big triumph in this business.’ He had nothing going on but he thought until the very end he could get to the top again and have one more big fighter. I hope wherever he is right now, he gets that one big shot.”

DiBella, who is handing the arrangements for a memorial service, said Kushner would be cremated.

“We’ll have a service soon, but we want to give Cedric’s many friends from around the world time to make plans to come,” DiBella said. “He was an international promoter and had friends all over the place. We want them to come in. It will be the kind of great party Cedric would love.”

UNBEATEN HOMETOWN FAVORITE SAMMY VASQUEZ JR. SEEKS 10th STRAIGHT KNOCKOUT WHEN HE FACES FELLOW SOUTHPAW EMMANUEL LARTEY FRIDAY FEB. 20, LIVE ON SHOWTIME® FROM CONSOL ENERGY CENTER, PITTSBURGH, PA.

PITTSBURGH, Pa. (Jan. 29, 2015) – High-energy hometown favorite and unbeaten welterweight Sammy Vasquez Jr. (17-0, 13 KOs) will return to action seeking his 10th consecutive victory by knockout when he takes on fellow southpaw Emmanuel Lartey (17-2, 8 KOs, 1 NC), of Brooklyn, N.Y. by way of Ghana, in the 10-round main event of a ShoBox: The New Generation tripleheader live on SHOWTIME® (10 p.m. ET/PT, delayed on the West Coast) from CONSOL Energy Center in Pittsburgh, Pa.

In the co-feature of the Goossen Promotions event, former longtime Cuban amateur star and current third-ranked WBC light heavyweight Humberto Savigne (12-1, 9 KOs, 1 NC), of Miami via Guantanamo, Cuba, will take on undefeated Craig Baker (15-0, 11 KOs), of Baytown, Texas, in an 8/10-round bout.

In the opening bout of the telecast, talented southpaw and WBA No. 7 ranked featherweight Claudio Marrero (17-1, 13 KOs), of Miami by way of the Dominican Republic, will box an opponent to be announced in an eight-round match.

“We’re honored to present Sammy’s return to action against Lartey,” said Tom Brown of Goossen Promotions. “For decades Western Pennsylvania has produced world champions and some of the boxing’s toughest warriors and Sammy fits right in. He’s really made CONSOL his home. With the tremendous past support from the Pittsburgh area for his fights, we strongly encourage fans to purchase tickets well in advance.”

“We are very excited to once again host hometown hero Sammy Vasquez, Jr., at CONSOL Energy Center as he headlines the feature bout for a terrific professional boxing card on Feb. 20,” said Tim Hassett, CONSOL Energy Center General Manager and Regional VP of AEG Facilities. “The City of Pittsburgh has a rich history and tradition in boxing, and is the center of a region full of enthusiastic sports fans. We are thrilled that Goossen Promotions and SHOWTIME have chosen our venue as the site for this event, and we look forward to all involved enjoying all that our great city has to offer.”

One of the most popular fighters from the area in years, the crowd-pleasing Vasquez, 28, will be making his second ShoBox start and third consecutive appearance at CONSOL Energy Center, where he is coming off two of the finest victories of his promising career.

In his most recent start, the aggressive-minded Vasquez registered an explosive 2:35, first-round knockout over Alberto Mosquera (21-1-2 going in) last Nov. 14. He scored a smashing ninth-round TKO over then-unbeaten James Stevenson (21-0 going in) on Aug. 8. Vasquez dropped Mosquera twice with body shots, Stevenson once.

Vasquez has fought one time past the sixth round. He has never gone more than nine and has won his last nine consecutive fights by knockout. Lartey, conversely, has gone 10 or more rounds five times, never been knocked out and never been knocked down.

“Lartey is a good, tough fighter and it’s going to be a good fight,’’ Vasquez said. “I know I’m going to keep my KO streak going. Whether it’s in the first or the 10th, it will happen. He’s never been knocked out and I like those kinds of challenges.’’

In his ShoBox debut, Vasquez scored three knockdowns en route to a 2:49, first-round knockout over Juan Rodriguez Jr. on April 18, 2014, in Monroeville. Pa. Despite all the stoppages, the 5-foot-10 Vasquez never considered himself a knockout puncher.

“I consider myself well-rounded but if the opportunity comes, I take advantage,” Vasquez said. “Whether I am considered by others as a KO or guy or not, I’ll take advantage of the opportunity. I know I could be entering the world rankings soon. But, for now, I don’t really pay attention to them.’’

An accomplished amateur (2011 National PAL Championships and 2010 All-Army Championships gold medalist at 152 pounds), Vasquez has been a crowd favorite since turning pro in August 2012. All but three of his fights have taken place in the Pittsburgh area.

“Fighting again at CONSOL Energy Center, the home arena for the Pittsburgh Penguins, is great,’’ said Vasquez, a United States Army veteran who served two combat tours in Iraq (2005-2006 and 2008-2009) during a nine-year stint as a member of the National Guard. “I am very grateful to be able to headline there and I’m glad to be able to bring attention and publicity to Pittsburgh for the boxing fans to enjoy. I’m happy to bring boxing back and to put on a good show for the city and our area.

“There is no pressure in boxing after some of the things I’ve been through outside of boxing. I always want to win, but win, lose or draw, in boxing you always come out of that ring alive.’’

Lartey (pronounced “LAR-tay”), 32, is coming off his most noteworthy victory, a unanimous 10-round decision victory over former world champion Steve Forbes on June 7, 2014 in Tacoma, Wash.

“I’ve faced much tougher competition than Vasquez and I’m not worried about fighting in his hometown,” Lartey said. “Sammy is a very tough fighter, but so am I. He’s been knocking out a lot of guys, but he hasn’t faced anyone like me.”

In his bout before last, his ShoBox debut, Lartey came up on the wrong end of a hard-fought split eight-round decision to 2008 U.S. Olympic Gold Medalist Felix Diaz.

Three fights ago the game, durable Lartey gave unbeaten rising star and 2012 U.S. Olympian Errol Spence his toughest pro fight, taking him the eight-round distance for the first time. Although clearly behind and seemingly beaten, Lartey landed a body shot near the end of the seventh before rocking Spence with a big right hook late at the bell. Lartey came forward for most of the eighth round, forcing Spence to stand his ground in the final minute of the fight.

“I had a few setbacks and I’m very grateful for this opportunity. This is my time to shine and show the world how good I am.”

The 5-foot-8 Lartey turned pro in April 2005 in Ghana, and fought through 2009 there. He was 11-0 with 1 NC – winning the African and Ghanaian super lightweight championships along the way – before moving to the United States and making his stateside debut in February 2011.

This will be the fourth time he’s faced an unbeaten prospect on the road. He is 1-2, losing on points to Diaz in April 2014 and Spence in October 2013 and winning via points against Jonathan Bautista (13-0 going in) in April 2013.

Savigne (pronounced “sa-VEEN-yay”), 34, knocked out former world champion Jeff Lacy in the second round in his last start on July 10, 2014. That upped his record to 10-0 with 1 NC since suffering his lone defeat to underdog Harvey Jolly in December 2009, a fight in which he may have entered with an injured ankle.

A former international amateur standout and a member of the Cuban National team for seven years, Humberto (pronounced “Umberto” – with a silent “H”) made his pro and stateside debut at the late age of 30. Baker represents the fourth undefeated fighter that Savigne has faced as a pro.

“The only thing I know is that Baker is going to go down before the fifth round,” Savigne said. “I’m going in there to knock him out and make it a quick night. I don’t know what he is thinking about me, but I know I’m not underestimating him. I’m going to do my job like I always do. It doesn’t matter what he does. I’ll be ready.

“I’m going to prove that I’m the new don of the light heavyweight division,” said Savigne, who is nicknamed “El Don.”

A natural left-hander, Savigne went 398-23 in the amateurs. He won the national championship four times, and was on the national team for seven years. Savigne defected from Cuba to the United States in April 2009. The 6-foot-1 Savigne, who has fought exclusively in the U.S. since turning pro, has quickly rose to No. 3 in the WBC 175-pound rankings after just 14 professional bouts.

“I feel I was ready for a world title fight since last year,” Savigne said. “I’m looking forward to getting a win on Feb 20 and facing the big names in the light heavyweight division. I’ve been training hard and I’ve been patient and humble. When the time comes, I’m going to be in prime shape and ready to fulfill my dream of becoming a world champion. Whether it’s early this year, late this year or next year, I’m ready.

“I want to fight the champions at 175 pounds, but I need to take care of Baker first. I want Adonis Stevenson. I feel that I’m better than him. He’s never fought a guy like me and I don’t see enough skill set in him to be able to defeat me.”

Baker, who turns 31 on Feb. 10, will be making his ShoBox debut. A seven-year-pro, Baker is a pressure fighter who likes to wear down opponents intelligently. He is coming off a third-round knockout over Sergio Cordoba last Nov. 15 in Argentina. He has won his last three fights inside three rounds, but not against fighters on the level of Savigne.

“I’m always the underdog, so this is nothing new,” Baker said. “I’ve been in this position before. You just have to do what you’re supposed to do you’ll get the win. “We’ve been waiting for this opportunity to prove who we are.

“When I win it will mean everything, it will be a dream come true. It’s going to open some doors for me. I’ll be 16-0 and be right there to face some of the top fighters at 175 pounds.”

Baker turned to boxing in 2005 as a way to lose weight. At the time, he weighed 293 pounds. He would lose his amateur debut but then went on to win the Texas State Golden Gloves and the Texas State USA Championships in both 2007 and 2008. Baker was also runner up at the National PAL Tournament in 2007, a quarterfinalist in both the National USA Championships Tournament and the National Golden Gloves, which earned him a USA boxing national ranking of No. 3.

“I’ve faced guys like him before,” Baker said. “At the end of the day, all that matters is what you bring to the ring. On the national level in the amateurs you can face guys with a few hundred fights on the first day of a tournament. So his amateur pedigree doesn’t scare me.

“I’m just expecting a W anyway it comes. That’s what I want and that’s what I’m getting. He’s just like any other fighter. You have to wait and see what they have. We’ll find out on fight night.”

Marrero, 25, is no stranger to local fans, having fought twice in the area last year, both times on cards also featuring Vasquez.

An excellent fighter whose only loss came on a tight 12-round decision to Jesus Cuellar in a let-it-all-hang-out, action-packed slugfest for the WBA Interim Featherweight World Championship (scored 114-113, 115-114 and 111-111) in August 2013, Marrero will be making his ShoBox and 2015 debut. He went 3-0 last year, winning by sixth-round TKO over Ira Terry in his most recent start last Nov. 21 in Tulsa, Okla.

Advance tickets priced at $238, $100, $60, $40 and $25 for students and military with valid ID (Box Office Only), plus applicable fees, for “The Pride of Pittsburgh III” will go on sale Friday, January 30 at 10:00 a.m. through the Dick’s Sporting Goods Box Office at CONSOL Energy Center, Ticketmaster.com, all Ticketmaster outlets or charge by phone at 800-745-3000. Introducing LGM Promotions

LGM Promotions
Jersey City, NJ (January 29, 2015)-WBU Jr. Welterweight Champion Danny “Little Mac” McDermott announced today the formation of a new Boxing Promotional Company that will be based out of his hometown in Jersey City NJ.
McDermott has partnered up with local businessman Nick Jayme to form LGM Promotions

LGM also announced today that it will put on its first show “fists of the Fighting Irish” at the Jersey City Armory on Saturday March 14th with McDermott headlining the card in a defense of the title he captured this past July in GenSan City, Phillipines.

“I am excited to start this company. Launching it on the tenth anniversary of my pro debut makes it that much sweeter. This is something that I have been thinking about for some time now. I love boxing. It is my life. It just makes a lot of sense for us right now to begin to prepare for a life after boxing and what better way then be able to put on a fight in my own hometown.” said McDermott.

Mr. Jayme is a longtime friend of the McDermott’s and is former amateur boxer himself. He is an active community servant in the Jersey City area.

“I have always loved boxing and I have a passion for the sport. I came up in the amateurs with Danny and have known him for many years.

“I recently reconnected with boxing after doing an event with Miguel Cotto and that is when i decided to form LGM Promotions.”

“We are looking to do 4 or 5 events this year in the community. I am a big believer in the Hudson County community. LGM is Jersey City based and that’s where we are basing our roots.”

“March 14 is about celebrating the Irish Heritage Parade. We are working close with the Jersey City Irish Parade committee. They are having their dinner on March 13. We are doing the fight on March 14 and then the Parade is on March 15. This event is all about celebrating St. Patrick’s Day said Mr Jayme.”

“On the boxing side, we hired Rich Komissar (RKO Boxing) to be our Director of Boxing Operations. Rich has a wealth of experience in the sport from on every level. It is very comforting to have a guy on our team that people actually call back” joked Jayme.

Mr. Jayma also added “We also set up a strategic alliance with Mariusz Kolodziej and his group at Global Boxing in North Bergen. Mariusz and Danny go back a long time. He is a great friend of the sport on more than a local level.

“These first events will be Jersey City ethnic based with family friendly ticket pricing and family friendly concessions,”

“We want the entire community to embrace us. We will make it affordable for a guy to bring his kids to the fights and have a few hot dogs with a couple of sodas and maybe a beer or two without breaking the bank” finished Jayme.

“I’m excited to help. Danny is family. Danny is my guy. He always was and always will be. I’m proud of all he has done in the last year or two. He is extremely popular in this part of New Jersey (as well as across the river in New York City) so it makes great sense to launch here. Nick Jayme has a great vision on where he wants his company to be in a year or two. His community minded spirit enlightens me. Nick Jayme is a solutions guy. I like that” said Komissar.

“Our job will not be too hard. This part of New Jersey has an awful lot of boxing clubs and it is teaming with youngsters that want opportunities. We are here to give them just that” added Komissar

The full event will be announced shortly.

CHRIS ALGIERI VISITS CHILDREN’S HOSPITAL

Chris Algieri Childrens Hospital
WBO Jr. Welterweight champion Chris Algieri returned to his roots yesterday spending the entire day visiting his alma mater Stony Brook as well as Stony Brook Children’s Hospital.

Algieri started the day off by meeting Dr. Joseph Laver, Chief Medical Officer and Professor of Pediatrics at Stony Brook Children’s Hospital. Chris toured the facilities and also met Dr. Joan Alpers, director of Child Life programs at the hospital and embarked on a tour of the hospital eventually meeting some of their pediatric patients in the playroom with Dr. Michael Attard, a Chief Life specialist.

Spending time with the children in the playroom was perhaps the most rewarding part of the day as Chris met with many of the kids who are patients at the hospital. In addition to meeting Long Island’s most recent Champion, the kids were elated to see his championship belt and take pictures with him. Chris spent time talking to the kids and cheering them up.

From there Chris hooked up with Dr. Craig Lehman, Dean for the school of Health, Technology, and Management and Professor of Clinical Laboratory services and concluded his tour with Dr. Andrew Wackett, Assistant Dean for Medical for Medical Education and Associate Professor of Emergency Medicine.
Later in the day Chris traveled to his alma mater, Stony Brook University for dinner and took in the Stony Brook-Hartford Division 1 Basketball game.
It was a very rewarding for Chris Algieri who maintains the importance of staying close with the community in which he was raised.
Star Boxing’s Joe DeGuardia, Chris’ promoter had this to say about the day’s activities, “I’m pleased that Chris continues to give back to the community he so loves and cherishes. It speaks volumes of his character and I am proud that he continues to devote his time to such charitable activities. He’s a true champion both in and out of the ring”.
DeGuardia expects that we will see Chris Algieri back in the ring later this spring and expects to make an announcement soon as to his next fight.

Pacquiao – Mayweather have private meeting

Pacquiao_Algieri_141123_001a
According to Dan Rafael of espn.com, Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather held a private meeting inside of Pacquiao’s hotel suite on Tuesday night in Miami.

They met inside Pacquiao’s hotel suite and “it was very pleasant and very encouraging, and we give Floyd credit for coming over,” Pacquiao adviser Michael Koncz, who was present at the meeting, told ESPN.com on Wednesday. “That’s the first time they ever sat eye to eye. I’ve met Floyd many times, but he and Manny had never had a chance to meet. They talked at halftime, but this was a longer, more serious meeting. You could tell by their body language that this was very positive. It was for a good hour or more.

“It was a business meeting, but it wasn’t a tense business meeting. I think that’s because they both have mutual respect for each other. We’ll determine what will happen over the next couple of days.”

“I told Floyd I would call [Pacquiao promoter] Bob [Arum of Top Rank] in the morning, and I did that and discussed them with Bob, and he assured us they have been worked out. I took care of it,” Koncz said. “I said to Floyd, and Manny agreed, that if those are the only two broadcasting issues, we would take care of them.”

Koncz said Pacquiao and Mayweather also discussed other issues but that the broadcasting items were “the majority of the discussion. Floyd said, ‘I want the fight to happen,’ and Manny said he does, too. If the fighters both want the fight to happen, who can stop it? They both said they want it to happen, and we’re still looking to make it happen on May 2.

“I think people are just tired of all of this. Me and Manny, and maybe Floyd, we’re tired of the fans and everybody, everywhere we go continually asking us when the fight will happen. Boxing needs this fight to happen, and it needs to happen in May.”

“I don’t want to go on a worldwide tour. We don’t think it’s necessary,” he said. “Look, we could have stopped in seven cities and not gotten the kind of publicity we got from Manny and Floyd talking at halftime of the basketball game.

“I think we could do one city, perhaps two, New York and Los Angeles, and this thing will go viral. It will sell itself. We don’t need to go spending money on private jets to go to a lot of cities. Those tours are expensive. The money could go to the fighters instead. People want this fight and have wanted it for so long. I would have liked to see it happen three or four or five years ago, but hopefully we can get it done now. It will be the biggest fight in history.”

Isaac Zarate Inks Promotional Contract with Thompson Boxing Promotions

ORANGE, Calif. (Jan. 28, 2015) – Thompson Boxing Promotions signed super bantamweight prospect Isaac Zarate (9-1-1, 1 KO) to an exclusive promotional contract, the Southern California-based promoter announced today.

Zarate, a quick-handed southpaw from the Los Angeles port city of San Pedro, has become a known commodity around the Southern California boxing scene. All but one of his fights have taken place in the greater Los Angeles area, and he is currently the NABF junior super bantamweight champion.

Zarate captured the vacant belt in an 8-round unanimous decision win over the previously unbeaten Fernando Samaniego in October.

“I’m very excited to become a part of the Thompson Boxing team,” said Zarate, who is trained and managed by Eddie Gonzalez. “Ken Thompson and Alex Camponovo put me on their shows when I was first starting out, and now that I’m signed, it’s an amazing feeling.”

As a high school freshman, Zarate, along with his friends, would lace up the gloves and engage in harmless backyard boxing. Little did Zarate know that he would discover a sport that he could make a career out of.

“As kids, we didn’t know what we were doing,” Zarate said. “We were just having fun and trying something new. After a few sessions, I started to realize that I had more ability than everyone else. I started going to boxing gyms learning everything I could, and ended up turning professional in 2011.”

“We’ve known about Zarate and his ability since we first started featuring him on our shows four years ago,” said Ken Thompson, president of Thompson Boxing Promotions. “He trains hard, performs well, and now has the combination of an excellent manager in Eddie Gonzalez, and an aggressive promotional company that will keep him busy throughout his contract.”

Zarate faces veteran Pedro Melo (12-6-2, 3 KOs) of Tijuana, Mex. on the undercard of Thompson Boxing’s “Path to Glory” event on Friday, Feb. 20, from the Doubletree Hotel in Ontario, Calif.

“Melo is a tough fighter with a lot of experience,” Zarate said. “I’ve seen him fight live once. He has good boxing skills, but we’ll take him out of his comfort zones. We’ll have an excellent game plan for this fight.”

Zarate, 23, trains out of the Ponce de Leon Gym in Montebello and compiled a brief amateur record of 11-3 before turning professional in October 2011.

Guillermo Rigondeaux encouraged by Oscar de la Hoya comment about Leo Santa Cruz unification fight

Rigondeaux_Looknongyantoy_140719_001a
MIAMI (Jan. 28, 2015) – World Boxing Association (WBA) Super, World Boxing Organization (WBO) and The Ring Magazine super bantamweight champion Guillermo “The Jackal” Rigondeaux (15-0, 10 KOs) is encouraged by reports that World Boxing Council (WBC) title-holder Leo Santa Cruz’ promoter, Oscar de la Hoya, believes a Rigondeaux-Santa Cruz unification fight has to happen.

The 34-year-old Rigondeaux, a two-time Olympic gold medalist, has been restricted to Asia for his last two fights, subsequently in low-profile matches, due to the lack of desire by any world-class super bantamweight to challenge the Cuban star.

Rigondeaux stopped WBO No. 6 rated challenger Hisashi Amagasa (28-4-2, 19 KOs) after 11 rounds in Osaka, Japan this past New Year’s Eve. Last July, “Rigo” knocked out Sod Kokietgym (62-2-1) in the opening round of their fight in Macao, China.

“It’s good to know that Santa Cruz’ promoter has stated that our unification fight has to happen,” an ecstatic Rigondeaux said. “I want to add his (WBC) green belt to my WBA and WBO championship collection. I’ve wanted this fight for some time. Let’s hope this is not just idle talk. Let’s do it!”

Rigondeaux vs. Santa Cruz (29-0-1, 17 KOs) would be a classic showdown between ethnic boxing arch-rivals, respectively, Cuban and Mexican fighters who now live in Miami and southern California.

“I have contacted Golden Boy Promotions many times to ask about making a fight between ‘Rigo’ and Santa Cruz,” Rigondeaux’ manager Gary Hyde added. “They always answered by saying they were interested in making this fight but not at that time. Yesterday, after learning Oscar said this fight has to happen, I reached out to Golden Boy and can confirm that negotiations have commenced. Myself and Caribe Promotions, ‘Rigo’s’ promoter, will endeavor to make this fight happen as soon as possible.

“Once ‘Rigo’ beats Santa Cruz for his third world title belt – fourth if you count The Ring Magazine – a fight against International Boxing Federation (IBF) champion Carl Frampton (19-0, 13 KOs) would have to happen in order to determine the undisputed super bantamweight champion of the world.”

Up-and-Coming Lightweight Karl Dargan to Meet Tony Luis on ESPN Friday Night Fights and Noche de Combates

The January 30 edition of ESPN Friday Night Fights presented by Corona Extra and ESPN Deportes’ Noche de Combates presentado por Corona Extra will feature undefeated lightweight Karl “Dynamite” Dargan (17-0, 9 KOs) and veteran Tony “Lightning” Luis (18-2, 7 KOs) in the 10-round main event. Friday’s show from Foxwoods Resort and Casino in Mashantucket, Conn., will air live at 9 p.m. ET on ESPN2, broadband Spanish-language ESPN Deportes+ and WatchESPN. ESPN Deportes will televise Friday’s fights on Saturday, Jan. 31, at 3 p.m. The card is presented by Main Events.

Commentators:
Todd Grisham (@GrishamESPN) will be ringside with analyst Teddy Atlas describing the action for ESPN2. Delvin Rodríguez and Alex Pombo will call the fights for Noche de Combates (Fight Night) on both ESPN Deportes and ESPN Deportes+, while Leopoldo González and Claudia Trejos will anchor the studio. Bilingual reporter Bernardo Osuna (@osunaespn) will present live interviews and reports for both shows.

Main Event:
Philadelphia’s Dargan is coming off a fifth-round TKO win over Angino Perez, while Canada’s Luis is looking to continue his winning ways after scoring an eight-round unanimous decision win over previously undefeated Wanzell Ellison.

“Karl has a tough fight on his hands. I like this kid Tony Luis,” said Dargan’s trainer, Naazim Richardson. “This kid (Luis) doesn’t back down for anybody. You have to be leery, too, because he likes to lead with that head – he’s got that Tim Bradley lead.”

Luis said of Friday’s fight, “I think Dargan is a very good fighter. I think he’s got very good skills, fast hands, and he’s a good counterpuncher. If you make too many mistakes, he can make you pay. One thing I’ve always been good at doing is assessing my opponent’s strengths and weaknesses. My team is always able to put together a good game plan to neutralize the fighter’s strengths while employing our own strengths.”

Co-Feature:
Friday’s eight-round middleweight co-feature will pit “The Haitian Sensation” Russell Lamour (14-4, 4 KOs) against Thomas “The Souljah” Falowo (12-3, 8 KOs). In his last bout, Maine’s Lamour scored an eight-round unanimous decision win over Ashandi Gibbs, while Falowo, of Rhode Island, is looking to rebound from a seventh-round TKO loss to Ronald Gavril.

Boxing manager Adrian Clark releases mini documentary Adrian Clark: Before The Bell on Youtube

Dallas, TX (January 28, 2015)–Up and coming boxing manager Adrian Clark has released a mini documentary that chronicles a week in the life of his career as he leads up to a fight.

The Documentary is titled Adrian Clark: Before The Bell

Clark of Dallas, Texas has quickly become one of the brightest young minds in the boxing industry and is coming off a stellar 2014 where he led fighters such as James De La Rosa to appearances on the Floyd Mayweather – Marcos Maidana II undercard where he defeated former world champion Alfredo Angulo as well as a December fight on HBO Boxing After Dark.

Another client, Jerry Belmontes fought WBC Lightweight champion Omar Figueroa on Showtime Championship Boxing in a bout where most people who viewed the fight thought Belmontes had won a decision to capture the belt but lost via split decision.

“It was an amazing experience doing a mini documentary. Although the focal point was myself, the fighters I work for get good exposure also. Name and face value are very essential when trying to market athletes so when you see me, you see my guys. When you see my guys, you see me even if we aren’t there in the physical form, we all represent each other. Watching the documentary forced me to stop and admire what I’ve done and what these athletes are doing,” said Clark

“In five years & at 28 years old now, I’d like the believe I’ve done a pretty good job, especially working by myself with no backing. I sprung De la Rosa free from Don King, then got him 2 big fights on Showtime PPV and HBO. He made more money in 2 fights than his entire career combined. I negotiated a world title shot fight for Belmontes, earning him the most money in his career. I worked to get Ray Ximenez free from a bad promotional contract and active again, on his way to bigger fights. I signed an amazing prospect in Oscar Mojica who is a future champ at 118 lbs. and debuted a future star at 140 in Steve Belmontes. 2014 was an amazing year for AC Sports Management, LLC. Looking to capitalize in 2015”.

“There are a lot of amazing things going on in boxing right now. I’m young, up and coming and trying to maintain a respected name. I look to work and build healthy relationships with Banner Promotions, Roc Nation, Top Rank and local promoters. I have a fantastic relationship with Golden Boy and Main Events; I hope to maintain those strong bonds and make the best fights that include my guys”.

“Patience is key in the boxing business. One has to understanding that timing is everything and forced work isn’t the way. AJ Galante {who is probably the only other manager in his 20’s} and I understand that we are the young blood’s in the sport. In 5 or 10 years we’ll be the Al Haymon’s, Frank Espinoza’s and Cameron Dunkin’s… Big name guys and networks will look to work through us. We know that and we are constantly preparing and strategizing to carry on the amazing legacy of boxing in hopes of leaving a legacy of our own. Its pretty cool.”

INSIDE TEAM FURY

BOLTON (28 JAN) By Peter Fury: Ask any professional boxer to name the toughest part of their profession and they’ll tell you training camp stands out above everything else. It’s often tougher than a gruelling 12-rounder and it’s often tougher than taking a beating on fight night. Training camp can last for months and it only ever gets harder.

In camp right now we’ve got Tyson Fury, Hughie Fury and young Dempsey Fury, who is having his first fight with us (also on February 28). Training is intense at the moment and we’re looking forward to starting sparring next Monday. That’s when full sparring will begin for three weeks.

Everything is going well and they’re all in good spirits and looking fit and healthy. All three kids can’t wait to get into the ring and get away from training camp. This is the hard part right here. Training camp is so intense, so difficult and so mundane, they can’t wait to get into that ring and take it out on the opponents.

Still, we rotate things to keep it fresh. For example, last Monday we ran up a steep hill in long grass and snow, and this Monday we ran up a steep hill on tarmac.

The boxers will do some intense cardio in the mornings, which could be short sprint work to build up power, and in the afternoon they’ll do some weights and power exercises. Then, in the evening, they’ll do two hours of boxing, which involves skipping, sparring, bag work and pad work.

On a Tuesday, they’ll do some more cardio work, maybe a sprint around the track or some circuits, and we’ll even throw in some light weights with the circuit. On the days they don’t spar, I’ll take them on the pads and do some technical work with them.

All in all, they train three times a day on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, and then on Thursday and Friday they train two times a day. They train twice a day on Thursday because they do a heavy circuit and pads and they train twice a day on a Friday because they spar in the morning and do a heavy leg session in the afternoon.

On Saturday, Tyson will go for a long run and Hughie will go for a swim. They then rest up until Monday. Then we go through it all over again…

For now, Hughie and Tyson have been doing a lot of body sparring just to sharpen up. But soon we’ll bring in sparring partners from all over the world to give them something different. This allows Tyson and Hughie to both let loose a bit and spar full-on.

They all drive each other on in camp. Tyson, Hughie and Dempsey are a family unit and they have that tight bond and competitiveness about them. They have a different bond to what they’d have with anybody else. They’re all being pushed and all doing it together. Time and time again people come into our gym and don’t last. They come with the best intentions in the world but fall by the wayside. They can’t stick with it. These three, though, maybe because of the family bond, seem to just grind it out when the going gets tough.

From my perspective, balancing so many fighters is something you have to get used to. I’m used to it now. So long as I’m happy with the attention I’m giving them, that’s all that matters. I know I don’t cut corners and know I’m happy with the attention I give each of them. I’m able to look at each of them, identify what they need to work on and then go about rectifying any problems.

I’m pleased with what I’m seeing from all three of them. Tyson is a super athlete and everybody is trying to keep up with him, but Hughie is doing a lot better in this camp. He’s had a three week head-start on the rest of them, so he’s ahead right now in the fitness stakes, but Tyson is catching up very fast.

The reason Tyson is playing catch-up is because he beat Dereck Chisora at the end of November and then took December off. As you can imagine, it’s often difficult for a fighter to take Christmas off, enjoy some family time and then get back to the gym. It’s hard getting back into training at a heavy pace. Tyson is no different. He’s got weight to lose as well. But he’s doing okay with it, to be fair. He’s cracking on, he’s training hard, and the weight is coming off the way it should do.

I think he can motivate himself at this point. He’s experienced enough and good enough to know what he has to do to fulfil his potential and achieve his goals. As a trainer, you don’t just physically prepare these guys, you also have to work on the mental side of things. You have to motivate them and psyche them up. There are a lot of things involved. You play a vital part because you’re with them 24 hours a day. All you ask is that a fighter has the capability to listen and that they believe in the things you are telling them.

As for Hughie, I’m pleased to report he’s been responding very well to training. We found out the reason for his illness last year and it happened to be an intolerance to certain foods. We’ve cut them out and he’s now responding magnificently. How he boxed with all the problems he had is beyond me; everything he was intolerant to was stuff he was eating during the first year of his pro career. It was making him literally sick. This kid has been fighting and spewing his guts up every time.

It’s a relief to have him back in the gym at full health and to not have him feeling ill and drained all the time. He’s probably only ever been at 40%, so we’re looking for a big improvement this year providing his health continues along the right path.

Finally, congratulations to Deontay Wilder on becoming WBC world heavyweight champion. He defeated Bermane Stiverne a couple of weekends back and became the first American to win a version of the world heavyweight title since 2006.

The result was never really in doubt. Stiverne came in out of shape and that surprised me; as WBC champion, I didn’t expect him to come in looking as out of shape as he did. I was a bit disappointed with that.

I’m not going to take anything away from Wilder’s performance, though. I think he did okay and did what he had to do. He boxed similarly to how Tyson boxed against Dereck Chisora. He used the same tactics. He realised Stiverne is bad on the front foot and made him come forward. He put Stiverne in an uncomfortable position and that’s the way a tall fighter should box a small fighter. He used the right tactics and boxed the right fight.

I’m happy for Wilder and happy he got the win. He beat a good fella in Stiverne and looked good doing it. No, Stiverne wasn’t at his best, but, even if he had been, the result might not have been any different. This is what you get when a tall fighter boxes a short fighter and the tall fighter knows how to use his range. It’s why we’ve seen Wladimir Klitschko reign for so long at the top of the heavyweight division.

The giant heavyweights of this era have to know how to make the most of their attributes. That’s what Tyson and Hughie are telling themselves on a daily basis…

BROADWAY BOXING HEATS UP NEW YORK CITY WITH ADDITION OF SUPER BANTAMWEIGHT CONTENDER LUIS ROSA JR. TO THURSDAY NIGHT’S EVENT

New York, NY (1/28/15) – The first blizzard of 2015, forecast by some as the worst ever to hit the Northeast, is over and turned out to be not nearly as disastrous as predicted for New York. To those of you who remained inside all day watching incessant weather reports and are suffering from bouts of claustrophobia and cabin fever, come on out and escape into a night of heated action at the famed BB King Blues Club and Grill, in Times Square, New York City, on Thursday, January 29, for the latest installment of DiBella Entertainment’s longstanding Broadway Boxing series. Headlining a thrilling 10-bout card will be the popular and exciting unbeaten super bantamweight contender, Luis Rosa Jr. (17-0, 7 KOs).

The 23-year-old Puerto Rican-native Rosa, now living and training in New Haven, Conn., under the tutelage of his father, Luis Rosa Sr., turned pro in 2010 at 18 years old, after a very successful amateur career. Over the next few years, Rosa became one of the most touted prospects throughout the entire New England area due to his relentless, come-forward aggressive style of fighting.

Rosa had a breakout year in 2014, securing his two most impressive victories to date. On January 31, he dominated an eight-round slugfest over the highly regarded contender Jorge Diaz on ESPN’s “Friday Night Fights” at the Richard J. Codey Arena, in West Orange, NJ. Dropping Diaz with powerful hooks in rounds three and four, Rosa earned a unanimous eight-round decision.

Exactly four months later, Rosa cemented himself as one of the best up-and-coming 122lb. fighters in boxing when he took on top-rated and once-beaten 18-1 Luis Del Valle, on May 31, at the Tropicana Hotel and Casino, in Las Vegas. Televised by HBO Latino, Rosa engaged Del Valle in another exhilarating war, breaking his foe down round by round with pressure and a brutal body attack. Each frame featured plenty of toe-to-toe action, which not only is Rosa accustomed to, he thrives on it, seeking out his opponent’s weaknesses with precise counter punches. After 10 rounds, Rosa was awarded a unanimous decision.

Now the world-rated Rosa will be returning to Broadway Boxing for the first time since December 2013, when he faces the tough and always-game Noel Echevarria (11-4, 6 KOs) in the evening’s eight-round super bantamweight main event. In his last few bouts, Echevarria has fought top-notch opposition in Patrick Hyland and Tevin Farmer and always gives his full effort, making for action-packed affairs. Despite the amount of snowfall his area of Connecticut may have received, Rosa is undeterred and eager to give the fans in attendance on Thursday a night to remember.

The event on January 29 is sponsored by Manfredi Auto Group and Everlast. Tickets are currently on sale and are priced at $125, $100, $75 and $55. Tables are also available for purchase for this event, with VIP tables going for $1,000 per table (5 seats at $200 per seat), Ringside tables for $500 (5 seats at $100), and $375 tables (5 seats at $75). Tickets are available for purchase by calling the DiBella Entertainment office at (212) 947-2577. Doors open at 6:30pm with the first bout scheduled for 7:00pm.

MIDDLEWEIGHT CONTENDERS SERGIO “THE LATIN SNAKE” MORA AND ABRAHAM “ABIE” HAN COLLIDE WITH VACANT USBA TITLE AT STAKE

sergio_mora_image
New York, NY (1/27/15) – On Friday, Feb. 6, DiBella Entertainment and Goossen Promotions will present an exciting edition of ESPN “Friday Night Fights” when former junior middleweight champion and “The Contender: Season One” winner Sergio “The Latin Snake” Mora (27-3-2, 9KO’s) takes on Abraham “Abie” Han (23-1, 14 KO’s) in a 12-round middleweight contest with the vacant USBA title belt at stake. This event is set to take place at MGM Resorts International’s beautiful Beau Rivage Resort & Casino, in Biloxi, Miss. It will be televised live on ESPN2 beginning at 9 p.m. ET.

“This will be a highly competitive fight between two world-ranked middleweights in Mora and Han, on Feb. 6. Both are coming off big victories on HBO Latino in 2014,” said Lou DiBella, President of DiBella Entertainment. “The winner will establish himself as a future championship contender.”

“Abie jumped right at this opportunity when it was offered,” said Tom Brown of Goossen Promotions. “It’s a big fight for Abie coming off his win over Marcos Reyes in October and he’ll be well prepared.”

“We’re happy that DiBella Entertainment and Goossen Promotions were able to put together such a competitive fight for Sergio on short notice,” said Brian Kweder, ESPN Senior Director of Programming and Acquisitions. “The winner of this fight will no doubt be placing himself in a good position for a title shot in the middleweight division.”

While Sergio Mora, rated No. 13 by the IBF, is disappointed now that his world title shot will have to wait, he’s already weathered his share of setbacks and has never given up on his dream. After bypassing on an offer to face Jermain Taylor for his unified middleweight crown back in 2007, Mora grew frustrated by several months of inactivity. However, once he did challenge for his first world title in June 2008, Mora rose to the occasion, moving down in weight to battle WBC 154lb. champion Vernon Forrest. Using his unorthodox style, Mora was able to outbox and outpoint Forrest over 12 rounds to seize the championship. Moving back up to middleweight, a fight with then-champion Kelly Pavlik in 2009 fell through when Pavlik pulled out for medical reasons. Following that disappointment, Mora endured a couple controversial decision defeats, as well as a draw with Shane Mosley.

Starting in 2013, Mora regrouped and signed with promoter DiBella Entertainment, and has since put together four straight victories. In June 2013, Mora dominated the 29-2 former world title challenger Grzegorz Proksa on ESPN’s “Friday Night Fights” en route to earning a unanimous decision. He then reeled off consecutive fifth-round knockouts over another world title challenger in Milton Nunez and the 14-1 prospect Samuel Rogers. In both of those contests, Mora employed a more aggressive approach than he had earlier in his career, looking to focus more on his power and entertaining the audience. He ended 2014 with a shutout win over the always-game Dashon Johnson in December. Although the chance to fight for a middleweight world title fell through, Mora is eager to continue on his quest toward achieving that goal and standing in his way is Abraham Han.

“It wasn’t meant to be, with me and JT, so now it’s on with Han,” said Mora. “It’s great to be fighting back on ESPN, and for the USBA championship. Han is a tough competitor and the fans should expect a terrific contest, but I am determined to once again prove that I am a world-class fighter. An impressive victory will springboard me toward a world title opportunity.”

Coming from a fighting family, the popular Abraham Han, who is from Alabama but trains in Houston, Texas, first excelled at kickboxing, as per his family’s legacy, before deciding to fully focus on boxing. As an amateur, Han gained considerable experience by competing against the likes of Tim Bradley, Daniel Jacobs, Karim Mayfield, Edwin Rodriguez, Fernando Guerrero, Dominic Wade, and others. He started his professional boxing career scoring three first-round knockouts before easily dominating the 6-0 prospect Ibaheim King to earn a six-round unanimous decision in May 2009. Another six consecutive explosive knockouts followed, all within three rounds or less, demonstrating the power that Han possesses.

Building his record to 19-0, Han was featured on ESPN’s “Friday Night Fights” in July 2013, facing the unbeaten Glen Tapia. Engaging Tapia in an exciting war, Han was not only hampered by having to move down to junior middleweight, but also by suffering a severe cut from a head clash early in the fight. He has since bolstered his career with four victories in a row, including a brutal second-round stoppage over veteran contender Juan Carlos Candelo, halting him quicker than anyone had previously, for the Universal Boxing Federation middleweight championship. In his last bout on October 18, at the Stub Hub Center, in Carson, California, Han, a considerable underdog going in, impressively earned a 10-round decision over the 32-1 heavy-handed, world-rated Marcos Reyes in a bout televised by HBO Latino. He is now ranked No. 15 by the IBF.

“I’m very excited to face Sergio Mora on Friday, February 6,” said Abraham Han. “With my win over Marcos Reyes last October, I’m confident that I will be fully prepared to come out victorious against Mora as well.”

Tickets are on sale now at a reduced rate and are priced at $20.95, $34.95, $48.95 and $62.95, plus tax and service charges. They can be purchased at the Beau Rivage Theatre box office, through any Ticketmaster outlet or online at Ticketmaster.com. Doors open at 4:45 p.m., with the first bout scheduled for 5:30 p.m.

The tournament will begin with two brackets of four fighters each. In bracket one will be WBC #8 John Jackson (19-2, 15 KOs) of the US Virgin Islands facing WBC #13 Dennis Laurente (49-5, 30 KOs) of The Philippines, and Cuba’s Yudel Jhonson (16-1, 9 KOs) taking on Mexico’s Jorge Cota (24-1, 22 KOs).

The winners of these fights will then face each other in a semi-final and then those two winners will fight, for the right to have their name engraved on the inaugural Jose Sulaiman Cup.

Opening-round tournament participants will receive $50,000 each for their participation. Making it to round two will earn each fighter $100,000 and a trip to the finals will bring a purse of $200,000 to both participants. Making the finals will earn both fighters $350,000 in one year.

Every tournament match will be conducted under rules of the WBC, in conjunction with the local boxing commission. The first phase will be held in April/May and the fights will be scheduled for 10 rounds each. The semifinals will be held in September 2015 and scheduled for 12 rounds and the final in February 2016, also over 12 rounds.

“This is a project that is near and dear to my heart,” said Sampson Lewkowicz. “It was first the idea of the great Jose Sulaiman and had to be postponed when his health began to fail. And so I am honored to be working with Mauricio and the WBC to bring his father’s vision to life and honor him by doing so.”

Dates and venues for “The Jose Sulaiman Cup: WBC Super Welterweight Tournament” will be announced shortly.

I know with a few more fights under my belt I’ll be able to move up to 10-round bouts and hopefully fight for a regional title. The goal is to stay busy and focused on my future. I’m very grateful to have Al Haymon guiding my career. He’s the best in boxing. I’m looking forward to my next fight which will be announced very soon.”

Co-Feature Scouting Report: Lamour vs. Falowo Undefeated Technical Boxer vs. Seasoned Puncher

Mashantucket, CT: Russell Lamour (11-0, 5 KOs) is looking to remain undefeated against the younger Thomas Falowo (12-3, 8 KOs) on Friday, Jan. 30 in the co-feature on ESPN2 Friday Night Fights. Although Lamour is unbeaten, he has yet to face the same caliber of opposition Falowo has faced. Below is the scouting report for this match-up:

Category
Russell “The Haitian Sensation” Lamour
Thomas “The Souljah” Falowo
Age
32
26
Record
11-0 (5 KOs)
12-3 (8 KOs)
Strength
Lamour has good size and reach that he uses to his advantage. He utilizes his jab well to setup his best punch, the straight right hand.
Falowo is an aggressive fighter with good punching power in both hands and has a good reach also. He times his punches well, which enables him to land his best punch, also the straight right hand.
Weakness
Lamour does not possess adequate punching power in either hand, nor has he faced any top-level opposition thus far. Falowo will be the biggest puncher he has faced.
Falowo does not put together many combinations and has a tendency to rely too heavily on landing the big shot. He also tends to throw wide looping punches that may get him in trouble in this fight.
Experience
He compiled over 100 wins as an amateur boxer but has yet to face any significant opposition as a pro yet.
Falowo may be a bit more seasoned at the professional level with four more bouts under his belt. He has also competed on a major network in his most recent bout, taking on rising prospect Ronald Gavril.
Power
Russell will be at a disadvantage here as he does not possess that one-punch knockout power. He has only recorded two knockout wins in his last six fights.
“The Souljah” will have the advantage here. He has solid power in both hands and is always looking to finish his opponents. Only one of his previous five wins have gone the distance.
Speed
Lamour will have the advantage here but not by much. He is quicker on his feet, which could pose a problem if Falowo plans on catching him at some point.
Falowo will be at a slight disadvantage as his speed is average.
Endurance
Lamour has only gone eight rounds once, which was in his most recent bout. His endurance is still yet to be seen.
He has yet to be pushed past eight rounds and has not gone the distance in his previous three bouts. His endurance is still in question.
Accuracy
He will have an advantage here as he uses his jab to set up his shots wisely.
Falowo will be at a disadvantage here, some of his punches tend to get wide and looping when trying to land the knockout punch.
Defense
Lamour will be at an advantage here, he moves around the ring well making it difficult for anyone to hit him.
Falowo stands right in front of his opponents looking to land the big shots, which also allows for his opposition to land their own shots.
Chin
Lamour has yet to face a fighter with the punching power of Falowo, so his chin is still a question.
Falowo has been knocked down before, and was stopped in his last fight, so his chin could very well be a concern.
Style
Lamour is a more technical fighter who is not afraid to trade with anyone if he has to.
Falowo is a boxer/puncher who is always looking to finish his opponents.
Intangibles
Lamour could have continued to improve on his current unblemished record by taking on easier opposition; instead he decided to challenge himself by facing a tough and hard-hitting puncher in Falowo.
Rather than getting back to his winning ways after a loss in his last fight, Falowo has decided to challenge himself once again by taking on yet another undefeated fighter.
Crowd Support
Lamour could receive adequate fan support because he is from Maine and has fought his whole career in the surrounding area.
Falowo has fought in Connecticut on one occasion and may bring the crowd to their feet if he can manage to land one of his big shots.
The Match-Up:
Will Lamour mentally be there since he is trying to keep that undefeated record?
Will Falowo mentally be there since he lost to Lamour in the amateurs?
Lamour has never been down. Will he be able to handle it if he is knocked down?
Will Falowo be able to get through Lamour’s defense?

Main Events’ matchmaker Jolene Mizzone had this to say about the fight, “This is the type of fight all fighters coming up should take. You have an undefeated boxer (Lamour) who is taking a big step up and you have a fighter (Falowo) who has been in tough fights that he lost, but not looking for easy fights. They both want to prove they belong in the mix in the middleweight division.”

Paiva hopes to build off a successful 2014 with a win Friday in his network TV debut

LINCOLN, R.I. (Jan. 27th, 2015) — The trophy was a nice touch. The glowing recommendation from his father meant even more.

After switching trainers in 2014, helping him win both of his fights and earn the award for New England’s Most Improved Fighter, featherweight Dinis Paiva enters the next chapter of his career Friday night with another key addition to his corner.

“My father has been an important figure in my life, but he hasn’t always been my biggest fan,” said the East Providence, R.I., native, who makes his network television debut Friday, Jan. 30th, 2015 when he faces Matt Doherty on the main card of “CES MMA XXVII” live on AXS TV from Twin River Casino.

“Knowing he’s on the other side of the camera watching me and following me is more motivating than I can put into words.”

Growing up in a Portuguese family, Paiva’s father was always partial to soccer. Combat sports were a foreign concept. He didn’t dislike MMA. He just didn’t understand it.

“He’s growing to like it,” Paiva said. “I even catch him watching UFC every now and then.”

He won’t be watching Friday’s event cageside at Twin River, but he will be watching from his second home in Florida, rooting for his son with a close group of friends.

“Before he left, he told me, ‘Listen, I’ve got all these guys down here who are big fans. They’re coming over to watch the fight. You’ve got to get past this 5-5 record. You’ve got to do this!’ It motivates me,” Paiva said. “I got teary-eyed knowing my father is proud. He’s falling in love with the sport through me.”

The new-and-improved Paiva (5-5, 3 KOs) faces a tremendous challenge against Doherty (3-1, 2 KOs), a Salem, Mass., native who hasn’t fought since April when he suffered his first career loss to current UFC bantamweight Tateki Matsuda. But this isn’t the same inconsistent Paiva who wandered the first three years of his career, alternating wins and losses and struggling to develop rhythm.

Paiva now trains out of the Cape Cod Fighting Alliance (CCFA) under the guidance of veteran trainer and former pro Mike Gresh, a decision he admits was one of the most difficult of his career, but one that has been validated by his recent success.

Gresh, nicknamed “Loco Lobo,” has helped Paiva mature both physically and mentally, an important key to his turnaround in 2014. Paiva won both of his fights last year, highlighted by his thrilling first-round knockout win over Joe Cushman in June, and Gresh earned his own slice of recognition by winning the N.E. Trainer of the Year award.

“Most importantly, I believe in myself,” Paiva said. “For the longest time, I just fought to fight because I’m a nutcase. I love the sport. But I really believe in myself now. I know I belong at the top of my division among the best 135-pounders in New England.

“It was more of a mental block than anything else,” he continued. “I would win, then I’d lose, then I’d win, then I’d lose again. It took someone like Gresh, who’s been around the game so long, to show me and expose me to everything. I’m mentally strong. He told me I’d be top 10 by the end of the year, but I didn’t believe it until it started happening.”

“He’s like the Obi-Wan Kenobi of New England MMA. He’s trained me in my Jedi mindset.

Paiva’s knows the hardware doesn’t mean much unless he keeps improving in 2015, starting with Friday’s fight against Doherty, which could be a turning point in his young career. Thanks to the network television audience, he’ll have plenty of support, starting in his hometown of East Providence and stretching all the way to Florida, where his biggest fan will be watching.

“Actions speak louder than words,” Paiva said. “You hear guys all the time tell you how they’re 10 times better than they were, so on and so forth, but what I’ve done speaks for itself. I’ve improved a lot. Come Friday night against a tough guy like Matt Doherty, it’s going to show.

“I can’t be broken. I can’t be beat at this point with the mental strength I have.”

Tickets for “CES MMA XXVII” are on $40.00, $55.00, $100.00 and $125.00 (VIP) and can be purchased online at www.cesboxing.com or www.twinriver.com or by phone at 401-724-2253/2254. All bouts are subject to change.

Two title bouts highlight the main card, including Bourne, Mass., welterweight Chuck O’Neil (14-6, 4 KOs) defending his CES MMA title against Jersey City’s Manny Walo (7-1-1, 1 KO) in a five-round bout and a five-round lightweight showdown between CES MMA’s reigning 155-pound champion, Julian Lane (8-3-1, 1 KO) of Mansfield, Ohio and Somerville, Mass., challenger Lucas Cruz (7-2, 4 KOs).

Also on the main card, Dedham, Mass., welterweight Brett Oteri (12-5, 1 KO) battles Ludlow, Mass., vet Jon Manley (8-2) and Providence’s Luis Felix (11-8, 4 KOs) faces D’Juan Owens (11-8-1, 4 KOs) of Durham, N.C.

The undercard of “CES MMA XXVII” features six bouts, including a three-round featherweight showdown between Kyle Bochniak (3-0, 1 KO) of Boston and Long Island vet Thomas English (5-5, 2 KOs) and a lightweight bout between battle-tested veteran Jeff Anderson (11-9, 2 KOs) of Pawtucket, R.I., and Medford, Mass., prospect Lewis Corapi (6-1, 3 KOs).

Middleweight Eric Spicely (5-0, 2 KOs) of Providence faces Terrell Clark (2-1, 1 KO) of Worcester, Mass., and South Boston’s James Murrin (2-1, 2 KOs) battles Baltimore’s Robert Sullivan (4-3) in a featherweight bout. Flyweights Chris Cole (3-2) of Andover, Mass., and Dan Cormier (4-4, 1 KO) of East Providence, R.I., battle in a three-round bout and featherweight Rico Disciullo (3-0, 1 KO) of Peabody, Mass., faces newcomer Mak Kelleher of Selden.
