Cunningham Training Camp Notes: USS is Prepared to Face Former Sparring Partner in Front of Their Hometown Crowd

Steve Cunningham
Philadelphia, PA: Philadelphia’s own Steve “USS” Cunningham (26-6-0, 12 KOs) hopes to win over his hometown crowd at the Liacouras Center at Temple University on April 4th when he attempts to take the USBA Heavyweight Championship belt from the undefeated champion, Amir “Hardcore” Mansour (20-0-0, 15 KOs), on NBCSN Fight Night. Cunningham, a two-time cruiserweight champion, learned to fight while in the United States Navy and has not fought in his home town since March 29, 2003 when he defeated Demetrius Jenkins at the Philadelphia Spectrum on the Tua-Rahman undercard. Cunningham said, “The last time I fought in Philadelphia, Philly didn’t know me. I learned to fight in the Navy so I didn’t have a following at home. I have always wanted to fight in Philly at this level or higher.”

His opponent, Mansour, a native of Wilmington, DE, has deeper boxing roots in Philadelphia. Mansour worked with Joe Hand at the Joe Hand Gym in Philadelphia after he was released from the Schuylkill Federal Correction Institution in Minersville, PA. According to Steve’s trainer, Brother Naazim Richardson, “Fighting here in Philly is an advantage for Mansour. His supporters are based in Philly. He’s got Philly history behind him. We have to work harder than Mansour. We have to do more to win over these fans. Plan on Steve Cunningham being Steve Cunningham. We have to be intelligent enough to know how he is thinking about it and we are. Some of the things that we have implemented into Steve’s training I am confident we have found a way to deal with it.”

The two were sparring partners shortly after Mansour was released from prison. About their time as sparring partners Richardson said, “Mansour is going to try to prove to Steve that he is a better fighter than when they sparred together. The sparring advantage actually goes to Mansour. They didn’t spar enough to give away anything about Steve. We have to be intelligent enough to know how he is thinking about it and we are.” Cunningham said, “I don’t want to lose ever. The USBA title would be a step on the stairs to heaven. This is a national title and it will move me up in the rankings. This will get me a step closer.”

According to Cunningham this has been one of his hardest training camps yet, “This camp has been grueling. Brother Naazim has been really taxing on my body. I need and enjoy my rest when I get it. I have added a lot of things to my cardio: swimming, sprints and rowing. We have been putting different stuff in there. We feel very confident that we are going to get in there and do our job which is to win.” Richardson believes Steve is ready to face the Southpaw, “Some of the things that we have implemented into Steve’s training I am confident we have found a way to deal with it.”

In the 19th edition of the series, 16 middleweight (185 lbs.) and 16 light heavyweight (205 lbs.) fighters will square off in the most challenging sports tournament on television. The premiere episode will determine the eight men from each division who will successfully move into The Ultimate Fighter house and compete for a Harley-Davidson motorcycle and a six-figure contract with the UFC.

See this season’s newly released promos featuring Frankie Edgar, BJ Penn and the latest cast of Ultimate Fighters.

Chatman taking no prisoners in return to Providence

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (March 25th, 2014) — Having already marked his territory in Rhode Island by beating hometown favorite Thomas Falowo in July, Jersey City middleweight Chris Chatman has taken his newfound allegiance to New England one step further by signing with Classic Entertainment & Sports, the region’s premier combat sports firm.

But don’t think for a second being part of a team for the first time in his career has tamed the outspoken, 5-foot-8 southpaw.

“I’m focusing my efforts on becoming a world champion,” Chatman said, “and if I have to take out their whole lineup to do it, then so be it.”

For now, Chatman (11-3-1, 5 KOs) will focus his efforts on chopping down another out-of-town challenger with ties to New England, The Contender Season 2 champion Grady Brewer (30-16, 18 KOs) of Lawton, Okla., in Friday night’s main event at Twin River Casino.

Brewer teamed with Rhode Island’s Gary “Tiger” Balletto on the hit reality series in 2006 and returned to Providence two years later to beat fellow Contender alum Cornelius Bundrage. Now he’ll face the hard-hitting Chatman, who’s gained an improbable cult-like following in Rhode Island not only for his win over Falowo, but also for his effort in a disputed loss to former Olympian Demetrius Andrade in 2009, his first of three appearances at Twin River.

The eight-round middleweight bout between Chatman and Brewer will be the headliner of Classic Entertainment & Sports’ latest installment of the 2014 Twin River Fight Series. Tickets are priced at $41, $76 and $126 (VIP) and can be purchased by calling 401-724-2253/2254, online at www.cesboxing.com or www.ticketmaster.com, or at the Players Club at Twin River. All fights and fighters are subject to change.

“He’s a strong fighter,” Brewer said of Chatman. “A guy like him, you know he’s coming to fight.

“I’m excited to come back to Providence,” he continued. “I loved it there. Great fight fans. They love boxing and I’m excited to show them what I can do.”

Despite an age difference of 14 years (Chatman is 29 an Brewer is 43), the two are chasing the same dream of winning a world title, and both have shown the willingness to fight anyone at any given time, even if it means standing toe-to-toe with a hometown favorite on foreign soil.

Born and raised in Chicago, Chatman eventually relocated to San Diego and carved his niche out west, fighting nine of his first 10 bouts in California — the lone exception and only blemish on his record being the fight in Rhode Island against Andrade — before taking his 9-1 record to Forth Worth to face unbeaten Texan Charles Hatley. The two traded knockdowns and fought to a majority draw. Two of the three judges scored it even while the third favored Hatley by four rounds.

It wouldn’t be the last time Chatman found himself on the wrong end of a decision in his opponent’s backyard. After beating Falowo last year, he faced unbeaten Maryland prospect Jarret Hurd in Maryland in a six-round bout in January. Hurd won by split decision. One judge scored it 59-55 in favor of Chatman. The other two gave it to Hurd, 58-56 and 59-55.

“Anyone who saw that fight knows I won it,” Chatman said. “I’m always putting my best in the ring. That’s the only way I know how to do it. I think it’s a shame when a fighter trains hard and makes all the sacrifices and wins the fight, but loses because of politics.

“It discredits our sport and shows the lack of integrity among judges. That’s one of the reasons I love to fight in Rhode Island. I always get a fair shot.”

Five of Chatman’s last seven opponents were undefeated at the time of the fight, and Falowo only had one loss when they faced one another last year. The combined record of those opponents was 76-5-2 before the bell rang.

Fittingly, Brewer has built a similar resume through the years with each of his last three fights coming against undefeated opponents, including a 2013 showdown against world-rated Russian prospect Matt Korobov — “to this day, one of the better fighters I’ve faced,” Brewer said — and a scheduled eight-round bout against 17-0 Tony Harrison of Detroit in April.

After beating Steve Forbes in The Contender finale, Brewer won his next four fights before stopping unbeaten Nigerian prospect Albert Onolunose in the second round of their scheduled 12-round bout. Two years later, he handed world-title challenger Fernando Guerrero — 21-0 at the time — the first loss his career via fourth-round knockout. Brewer has also faced World Boxing Association (WBA) light middleweight champion Erislandy Lara and Andrade, the current World Boxing Organization (WBO) champ.

“The Contender was real instrumental for me because it set the stage for my career and gave me the respect I had been looking for,” Brewer said.

“I’m always trying to get to the top. Sometimes, I’ve been there, and sometimes I’ve taken fights on short notice thinking I was ready, and that’s part of the reason why I wasn’t always able to show who I really am.”

With the dream of winning a world title still within reach, Brewer draws inspiration from former champs George Foreman and Bernard Hopkins. Foreman had been the oldest fighter to win a world title before the 48-year-old Hopkins broke his record in 2013. Brewer still has a shot, but he needs to beat Chatman on Friday to snap his four-fight losing streak.

The fight is of equal importance to Chatman, who’d benefit tremendously by beating a well-known veteran with more than three times his experience as a professional.

“I’m putting my all into this like I do with every fight,” Chatman said. “Grady is a veteran, a former champ, and he has the experience to back it up. Like me, he’s pulled off many upsets, so to go in there thinking I’m guaranteed a win is foolish.

“That being said, I’m confident enough in my work ethic to expect that I can earn a victory.”

Win or lose, Chatman’s future in New England will certainly be entertaining if nothing else, and though he may never get that coveted rematch with Andrade, there are plenty of opponents to target in this neck of the woods, teammates or not.

“If you’re between 154 and 168 pounds and you’re being put ahead of me, you’ll be in my sights,” Chatman said. “I’m ready to prove that I’m No. 1 and if anyone wants to speak to the contrary, you’re more than welcome to step up and glove up.”

Friday’s undercard includes the return of unbeaten Providence middleweight KJ Harrison-Lombardi (5-0-1) of Providence, who will put his record on the line in a four-round bout against Jason Bakanowski (0-1) of Worcester, Mass.

Coming off a knockout win over veteran Arthur Saribekian in November, Cape Cod, Mass., heavyweight Jesse Barboza (7-1-1, 5 KOs) will look to stay on track against East Stroudsburg, Pa., heavyweight Glenn Thomas in a four-round bout while Springfield, Mass., welterweight Zack Rasmey (6-0, 3 KOs) takes on veteran Shakha Moore (11-19-3, 2 KOs) of Norwalk, Conn., in a six-rounder.

Louisiana cruiserweight Alvin Varmall Jr. (2-0, 2 KOs), who made his Twin River debut in February with a knockout win over Andre Ward, will return to face Devon Mosley (0-0-1) of Capitol Heights, Md., in a four-round bout and Chattanooga, Tenn., lightweight prospect Ryan Martin (3-0, 2 KOs) will face Justin Robbins (2-5, 1 KO) of Springfield, Ill., in a four-round bout. Cranston, R.I., welterweight Nick DeLomba (2-0) will return in a separate four-round bout. All fights and fighters are subject to change.

Koelling with April 5 tune up ahead of title fight this summer

Enrico Koelling (12-0, 4 KOs) is currently one of the most exciting prospects to come out of Germany. The 24-year-old light heavyweight aims to prove his potential on the April 5 undercard to the WBA Title Fight between defending champion Juergen Braehmer and challenger Enzo Maccarinelli in Rostock, Germany. The Berlin native is set to meet 33-year-old Mirzet Bajrektarevic (8-1, 4 KOs) in a scheduled eight round contest.

Koelling won the WBO Youth Belt in his last fight but had to relinquish it shortly after due to turning 24 in late February. “It was a sensational feeling to win my first pro title on January 25. Now I want to set my sights on the next one,” said the protégé of coach Karsten Roewer.
His teammate and world champion Juergen Braehmer believes that Koelling can go all the way. “He has the fire and determination to make it to the top. I seldom meet such a hardworking boxer as Enrico,” Braehmer adds ”He has given me fantastic sparring since I have been with Team Sauerland and is one of the reasons why I am currently the WBA Champion.”
Hagen Doering, matchmaker for Team Sauerland also sees a lot of potential in Koelling: “Every time he steps through the ropes you can see a real progression in his technique and tactics. This is why we plan to have him fight for a championship this summer – whether this be an Intercontinental or even a European Championship.’’
But first Koelling has to get Croatian Bajrektarevic out of the way. “He is southpaw and last time I fought, I beat a southpaw by knockout,” Koelling states optimistically. “This will be the perfect warm up ahead of a big fight this summer!”

There are still a limited number of tickets available for this show via www.eventim.de.

Boxing replaced Ritalin for Canadian prospect Steven Butler

GATINEAU, QUEBEC, Canada (March 24, 2014) – Highly-touted light middleweight prospect Steven Butler will make his professional debut this Friday night against Jean-Francoise Plourde (1-0) in a four-round match airing live on pay per view from Lac Leamy Casino in Gatineau, Ontario, Canada.

Fight Club Series, presented by Eye of the Tiger Management (EOTTM), is being distributed in the United States by Integrated Sports Media for live viewing at 7:00 p.m. ET – 4:00 p.m. PT on both cable and satellite pay-per-view via DIRECTV, iN Demand, DISH, and Avail-TVN. The event may also be watched worldwide on PPV at www.PunchingGrace.com

The 18-year-old Butler is the youngest Canadian National Champion ever, in addition to being the grandson of former Canadian junior middleweight Marshall Butler (20-5, 15 KOs). Steven probably wouldn’t be making his pro debut if boxing hadn’t replace Ritalin in his life.

“When I was in fifth grade,” Butler explained, “they labelled me as hyperactive and put me on Ritalin. Today, I’ve found piece of mind through boxing. Even though I played other sports, nothing releases my anger, my energy and provides me with true clarity except boxing. I no longer take meds. The moment my glove makes contact, I am free. Boxing is my new prescription.”

Butler started boxing at the age of 12 along with his brother. It didn’t take long for Steven’s natural raw talent to emerge. He went on to win 48 of 54 amateur bouts with one draw, including only one loss in his last 35 matches. His impressive lists of accomplishments includes four-time winner of the Bronze Glove Tournament, as well as gold-medal performances at the Silver Glove, Adidas and Golden Gloves tournaments.

World welterweight title challenger Antonin Decarie (29-2, 9 KOs), currently rated No. 8 by the WBC No. 13 by the IBF #13, headlines the seventh installment of the popular Fight Night Series ) against former Mexican champion Pablo Munguia (19-4, 11 KOs).

Lebanese-born Montreal super featherweight Baha Laham (12-1-2, 5 KOs) faces southpaw Roody Pierre-Paul (8-1, 5 KOs) for vacant WBC Continental Americas title in the 10-round co-feature.

The undercard also features many of Canada’s most exciting prospects including Schiller Hyppolite (8-1, 5 KOs) vs. Bahamian super middleweight Jermain “Choo Choo” Mackey (18-7, 14 KOs) in a 10-round bout; super middleweight Pascal Villeneuve (3-0, 2 KOs) vs. Francois “The Tank” Miville (6-1, 2 KOs) and Mitch Louis-Charles (3-1-1, 2 KOs) vs. Guillaume Tremblay-Coude (2-0, 1 KO), cruiserweight Samer Baraket (2-0, 2 KOs) vs. Sandy Pembroke (3-7, 1 KO), and heavyweight Zack Bunce (2-0, 1 KO) vs. Steven Harvey (4-1, 2 KOs) in four-round fights.

All fights and fighters are subject to change.

Scouting Report for March 29 Kovalev-Agnew Fight at Boardwalk Hall: Agnew Will Look to Take Kovalev Deep

Sergey Kovalev
Atlantic City, NJ: Undefeated light heavyweight Sergey “Krusher” Kovalev (23-0-1, 21 KOs) has yet to go beyond eight rounds in any professional bout in his career, because 91% of the time he knocks out his opponent before the fight gets too far, but if Cedric “L.O.W.” Agnew (26-0-0, 13 KOs) hopes to defeat Krusher taking him into the later rounds may be his best shot for success on March 29 at Boardwalk Hall. Below is the scouting report for the March 29 fight for the WBO Light Heavyweight Championship at Boardwalk Hall on HBO Boxing After Dark:

Category
Sergey “Krusher” Kovalev
Cedric “L.O.W.” Agnew
Age
30
27
Record
23-0-1, 21 KOs
26-0-0, 13 KOs
Weight
174
174
Strength
Kovalev has ring intelligence, footwork, punching power and laser focus. He is incredibly agile and flexible. He moves very well on his feet and is never out of position.
Agnew is a pure boxer with a strong US amateur background. He is undefeated. His focus will be 100% on this-the biggest fight of his life.
Weakness
Sergey has never been extended to the later rounds so there is no way to know what will happen if Cedric takes him deep. There has been a lot of speculation about the possibility of future unification bouts, this could tempt him to lose focus and look past Agnew.
Cedric has never fought a fighter of Sergey’s caliber. He has never been on the big stage and fought under the bright lights so there is no way to know how he will respond to the pressure.
Experience
Kovalev is the more experienced fighter. He has fought better competition and has beaten his recent opposition (Cleverly and Sillakh) to the punch.
Although Agnew has not fought the same level of opponents as Kovalev he has defeated everyone who was put in front of him
Power
They don’t call him “Krusher” for nothing!
Cedric will have to rely on his boxing skills, as Kovalev is the more powerful boxer.
Endurance
Sergey’s endurance is still untested as he has never had to go beyond 8 rounds.
Agnew has gone 12 rounds twice and been extended to 10 rounds once, so he gets the edge here with his experience.
Accuracy
Kovalev is extremely accurate. Against Sillakh he connected for 36.9% of his overall punches and 43.4% of his power punches.
Agnew is more of a boxer so if Sergey allows him to, he will connect with the jab.
Defense
Kovalev has not had to use a lot of his defense lately, so it is still a question mark.
For any opponent stepping into the ring against Sergey their main concern is going to be their defense because he has incredible punching power. For Cedric, questions remain about whether or not he was able to improve his defense during training camp.
Style
Kovalev’s style is to seek and destroy.
Cedric is a more classic boxer.
Intangibles
Kovalev has the confidence of a champion; he is remarkably focused and intense.
Agnew was the only Light Heavyweight to ask for this fight and accept the terms.
Crowd Support
Kovalev is fast becoming a big star so he will likely have most of the crowd with him.
As the American in this fight some of the fans will be with Agnew on 3/29.
The Match-Up
Kovalev is favored, but Agnew is a pure boxer who has a chance to extend Kovalev into the later rounds. If so, he will take Kovalev to a place where he has never been at a time when his focus may be elsewhere.

Questions:
1. Will Sergey be able to handle a pure boxer inside the ring?
2. Will Agnew fold under the lights?
3. Will Sergey be looking past this fight onto bigger fights?
4. Will Agnew be able to take Sergey’s punch if it connects?

Cedric “L.O.W.” Agnew
Main Events’ CEO Kathy Duva says, “Never miss a moment of a Krusher fight because you never know when it will all be over. He is electrifying in the ring and this will be his first main event on HBO so look for him to dominate early.”

About March 29th:

FORMER UNIFIED WORLD CHAMPION AMIR KHAN TO FACE WBA INTERNATIONAL WELTERWEIGHT CHAMPION LUIS COLLAZO IN CO-MAIN EVENT OF “THE MOMENT: FLOYD MAYWEATHER VS. MARCOS MAIDANA” SATURDAY, MAY 3 FROM THE MGM GRAND GARDEN ARENA LIVE ON SHOWTIME PPV®

Amir Khan
LAS VEGAS (March 24, 2014) – An explosive matchup of two world-class fighters is coming to the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas on Saturday, May 3, when British superstar and former Unified Super Lightweight World Champion Amir “King” Khan faces Brooklyn native and WBA International Welterweight Champion Luis Collazo in the 12-round welterweight co-main event of “THE MOMENT: Floyd Mayweather vs. Marcos Maidana” on SHOWTIME PPV.

A media conference call featuring both fighters is scheduled for Wednesday, March 26 at
3 p.m. ET/12 p.m. PT. Additional details to follow this announcement.

“I’m looking forward to fighting in Las Vegas once again, and my intention on May 3 is to make a statement that I belong on this big stage,” said Khan. “Luis Collazo might be coming off of a big win, but I am in incredible shape and am ready for this challenge. A win on May 3 is what I need to prove that I truly am one of the best welterweights in the sport.”

“Defeating Victor Ortiz in January was just the beginning,” said Collazo. “Facing and beating Amir Khan on the biggest stage in the sport is a once in a lifetime opportunity. I will take full advantage of this and put myself in the best position to face the winner of the main event. I hope Khan is ready because Brooklyn is coming to take him down.”

“Both Amir Khan and Luis Collazo have made it known that they want a shot at the winner of the fight between Floyd Mayweather and Marcos Maidana, so what better way for them to prove that they’re next in line than by fighting on “THE MOMENT” card on May 3?” said Richard Schaefer, CEO of Golden Boy Promotions. “These are two exciting former world champions and this fight has the potential to steal the show.”

“Amir Khan and Luis Collazo are aggressive boxers who deliver excitement and fan-friendly action in every fight,” said Stephen Espinoza, Executive Vice President and General Manager, SHOWTIME Sports®. “With the addition of this main event-caliber co-feature bout, boxing’s biggest night of the year has become even bigger. Mayweather vs. Maidana and Khan vs. Collazo is a spectacular one-two punch for boxing fans.”

A British standout who represented his nation in the 2004 Olympic Games, where he won a silver medal, Bolton’s Amir “King” Khan (28-3, 19 KOs) went from local hero to international star when he won his first world title at 140 pounds in 2009. After five successful defenses that included wins over Marcos Maidana, Paulie Malignaggi and Zab Judah, Khan lost his title by way of a controversial decision to Lamont Peterson in 2011. Winner of two straight over Carlos Molina and Julio Diaz since, the flashy, flamboyant 27-year-old boxer-puncher is now campaigning at welterweight, where he seeks championship gold once again.

Brooklyn’s Luis Collazo (35-5, 18 KOs) has long been one of New York’s finest exports, a slick boxer who isn’t afraid to get into the trenches and slug it out. Collazo is a former WBA Welterweight World Champion and currently holds the WBA International Welterweight Title. No stranger to facing the elite in his weight class, he has squared off against fighters such as Jose Antonio Rivera, Ricky Hatton, Shane Mosley and Andre Berto. Collazo took nearly two years off from the ring, but since returning in 2011, he has won five of six bouts, including four straight. This past January, he made the statement of a lifetime with a blistering second-round knockout victory over favored former world champion Victor Ortiz, and he has similar plans for Khan on May 3.

“THE MOMENT: Mayweather vs. Maidana,” a 12-round world championship unification bout for Mayweather and Maidana’s respective 147-pound titles, is promoted by Mayweather Promotions and Golden Boy Promotions and sponsored by Corona, O’Reilly Auto Parts and AT&T. In the co-main event, Amir Khan faces Luis Collazo in a 12-round bout for Collazo’s WBA International Welterweight title. The event will be produced and distributed live by SHOWTIME PPV (9 p.m. ET/6 p.m. PT) and is the third fight of Mayweather’s lucrative multi-fight deal with Showtime Networks Inc.

TUREANO JOHNSON LOOKS TO GO TO WAR WITH STEVENS

New Jersey (March 24, 2014) – Gary Shaw Productions undefeated middleweight contender, Tureano Johnson (14-0, 10 KOs) is training hard for his upcoming bout with Curtis “Showtime” Stevens (26-4-0, 19 KOs) taking place at the Liacouras Center in Philadelphia, PA on Friday, April 4th. Johnson vs. Stevens, a ten-round bout, will be will be televised on NBCSN “Fight Night” as the co-feature to Steve “USS” Cunningham (26-6-0, 12 KOs) vs. Amir “Hardcore” Mansour (20-0-0, 15 KOs).

Johnson, who resides in Hollywood, Florida, by way of Nassau, Bahamas, was part of the 2008 Bahamas Olympic Team. After having a decorated amateur career in which he worked alongside the Cuban National Team for the eight years, Johnson has developed into an outstanding professional, winning convincingly in all of his fourteen pro fights. He feels confident in his ability to defeat Stevens, who’s ranked #11 by the WBC and IBF.

“I would like to thank my promoter, Gary Shaw, for making this fight possible. On April 4th, the world will be introduced to Tureano Johnson. This has been a long, hard road for me filled with blood, sweat, and ruthless determination. I have been begging for this opportunity to pit my skills against the so-called best in my division. However, it is easier said than done in this world of boxing. No one would fight me until now. I respect Curtis Stevens. He is a strong, hard-punching fighter who has been in with the best. But he can’t and won’t beat me. To all the fans, don’t miss this fight on NBC Sports. I’m sure it is going to be a throw-back fight. It has been said that I’m not the most “technical” fighter out there. Well it’s true. I like to mix it up, throw hard punches, and get a little barbaric in the ring. I’m coming to fight and win impressively. After April 4th, I know I will get the fights I deserve.” said Johnson.

One of the best fighters to ever come from the Bahamas, Johnson will have to shake off the rust, being that he’s been out of the ring for over a year.

“The long layoff will finally be coming to an end and it won’t be a problem. I’ve had so many fights as an amateur that boxing is like riding a bike for me. I’ll know what to do as soon as I step in the ring. My body is well rested and I’ll be 100% healthy going into this fight.” Johnson concluded.

Promoter Gary Shaw feels Johnson is a star in the making as he stated, “Tureano Johnson is a very special fighter with an incredible work ethic. With that being said, he’ll have every opportunity to showcase his skills on the big stage. Against Stevens, I expect he’ll be tested, but I know he’ll adapt to anything he brings, and win the fight. This will be another excellent fight, one the fans will not want to miss.”

BERMANE STIVERNE VS. CHRIS ARREOLA WBC HEAVYWEIGHT WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP “FIGHT FOR PEACE — HEAVYWEIGHT HISTORY” SATURDAY, MAY 10 — LIVE ON ESPN — USC GALEN CENTER

chris-arreola
Sherman Oaks, California (March 24, 2014) “FIGHT FOR PEACE” the highly anticipated World Boxing Council Heavyweight Championship of the World and rematch between top-rated world contenders, Bermane “B. Ware” Stiverne and Chris “The Nightmare” Arreola will take place on SATURDAY, MAY 10 from the USC Galen Center in Downtown Los Angeles and telecast LIVE on ESPN and ESPN Deportes and presented by Corona Extra.

Hall of Fame Promoter Don King of Don King Productions and Dan Goossen of Goossen Tutor Promotions made the announcement jointly today.

“ESPN is in it to win it…and ‘win’ in it they have…hitting a grand slam home run in public opinion in welcoming the prodigal son of the sport of boxing – The WBC Heavyweight Championship of the World Title Event back to America – Halleluiah!” said the ever-enthusiastic Don King, promoter of Bermane Stiverne.

“FIGHT FOR PEACE” is a fitting international tribute to the battle for the vacant World Boxing Council Heavyweight Championship of the World previously held by longtime champion Vitali Klitschko who stepped away from boxing officially in December 2013 to focus on the 2014 Ukrainian Presidential Election where he is seeking to become the country’s leader.

“Vitali was a great champion, in and out of the ring, and the winner of this fight will have big shoes to fill wearing the green belt around their waist,” said Dan Goossen promoter of Arreola. “Chris will definitely be going into this fight with his back against the wall. It’s that type of do-or-die situation I believe when he’s the most motivated and dangerous. To top off this history making, and what is sure to be great event, is ESPN’s participation, the home to all major sporting events, putting additional broadcast significance to this Heavyweight World Championship fight.”

Stiverne and Arreola previously battled on April 27, 2013 in Ontario, California, with the Florida resident winning a 12-round unanimous decision over the Southern California based Mexican-American who fought valiantly through a knockdown and broken nose, both suffered in the third round.

The flamboyant King went on to say, “Bermane Stiverne vs. Chris Arreola fighting for the most coveted crowning ceremony in the world of sports scheduled to take place on May 10, 2014 – as Heavyweights go…so goes boxing! Never has that saying had more relevance than now.” “Needless to say there is great joy in the land of fisticuffs creating great excitement for boxing fans around the world who will celebrate this homecoming with bated breath and great anticipation awaiting the destiny of this fantastic rematch: Stiverne vs. Arreola for the WBC Heavyweight Championship of the World broadcast exclusively via ESPN.”

The move by ESPN to telecast the Stiverne-Arreola Championship bout is unprecedented and in recent years heavyweight title bouts have been broadcast primarily on premium cable channels or pay-per-view.

“For nearly 35 years, ESPN has been the premier destination for sports fans,” Goossen said. “We’re thrilled to work with their team to allow sports fans around the world the opportunity to watch a World Heavyweight Championship on what is the undisputed Worldwide Leader in Sports.”

“FIGHT FOR PEACE” exemplifies the obstacles both Stiverne and Arreola have climbed to be in position to do what no other person of their descent have done in the 100-plus years of our sport. With a victory, Stiverne would become the first Haitian to win the Heavyweight World Championship. And for Arreola, with all the great Mexican champions throughout the history of boxing, none have ever held the most prestigious belt of them all. History will be made on this night.

“ESPN has a long history of carrying world class boxing events, but this certainly ranks up there with the best that we’ve televised,” said Brian Kweder, ESPN senior director of programming and acquisitions. “Dan Goossen and Don King deserve credit for having the vision to distribute this potentially historical match to as many households as possible and we are thrilled to be televising the fight.”

Assistant Athletic Director and General Manager of USC Galen Center, Carl Reed added, “We are very excited to be part of the historic Heavyweight World Championship match between Bermane Stiverne and Chris Arreola. We have hosted numerous national and international events; this Heavyweight Championship fight will deliver the knockout blow that will set the USC Galen Center apart from all other venues. I look forward to working with both promoters, Don King and Dan Goossen in ensuring this is a fight for the ages!”

With a record of 23-1-1 (20 KO’s), the hard-hitting Stiverne, originally from La Plaine, Haiti and now living in Miami, Florida is currently world ranked as the #1 contender in the WBC heavyweight rankings.

“The only thing I’m thinking about right now is putting my hands on that title. As a matter of fact, to me, I’m going to the ring like I’m defending my title. This title is mine. It’s my title, you know what I’m saying; they just didn’t give it to me yet. I’m going in there to defend my title. I feel like I’m ready already. I feel great. I look great and I just can’t wait man. I can’t wait to make history, so everybody lookout for that fight. It’s gonna’ be a fantastic performance and a lot of pain and a knockout,” stated top heavyweight contender Bermane Stiverne, who talked about his anticipated rematch with Chris Arreola and his own desire to be crowned the new WBC Heavyweight Champion of the World.

Stiverne’s trainer, Don House added, “I’ve evaluated this fight and we have been going at this like Bermane hasn’t fought Arreola before, as if everything is brand new. Can Arreola bring anything into this fight differently? No. He may come to fight in the best shape of his life but he doesn’t have the skills to beat Bermane. He doesn’t have the power or speed that Bermane does. Arreola will be right there, Bermane won’t have to look for him, and Bermane will be ready to fight 12 rounds.”

Ranked the #2 heavyweight by the WBC, Arreola, 36-3-0 (31 KO’s), returned to action following the disappointing loss to Stiverne with a devastating first round stoppage of top contender Seth Mitchell on September 7, 2013 in Indio, California.

“I’m very excited about fighting for the WBC Title once again and having it seen on my favorite television network ESPN. I have a great opportunity to get my revenge against Stiverne and make history in one night and I plan to deliver,” stated Arreola.

Henry Ramirez, trainer of Arreola said, “Not too many times do you get a chance to right a wrong, and on May 10 Chris will have his chance to do just that with everything on the line. I know we have a tough task but I have zero doubt Chris Arreola will be the WBC World Heavyweight Champion and first ever of Mexican descent to hold such title.”

“FIGHT FOR PEACE” from the USC Galen Center in Downtown Los Angeles will be exclusively televised Live on Saturday, May 10 at 8 p.m. ET/5 p.m. PT on ESPN and ESPN Deportes and WatchESPN. Tickets priced at $300, $200, $100, $50 and $25 (plus customary fees) will go on sale shortly.

King, the Hall of Fame promoter concluded, “This is a must see and you cannot afford to miss it. You just have to be there, and you can be there, live and in living color with the movie stars, the sports stars, celebrities, dignitaries and world leaders on the scene with the crowd going wild – this is history in the making. Or, you can enjoy the thrilling cheers of excitement at your own house party… in your living room watching the provocatively spectacular TV broadcast on ESPN with friends and neighbors. What a super coup this is for ESPN…seizing the time and grasping the opportunity to reestablish the sport of boxing. Give the people what they want and they will respond with the magical question – When is the next one? ESPN has done just that – give the people what they want using indomitable courage, business genius and visionary ingenuity to snatch victory out of the jaws of defeat. BY ESPN’s televising boxing’s redemption, it gives the sweet science a return to glory from its fall from grace. But more importantly, it is the “Fight for Peace” symbolizing the essence of America’s creed- freedom, justice, equality, liberty, and peace which makes all American’s proud, happy and extremely grateful. Thank you ESPN.”

The network will also present comprehensive news and analysis in anticipation and leading into the fight.

Hall of Fame Trainer Jessie Reid on Skipp Scott’s Next Opponent, Gerald Washington: ‘Honestly, He Strikes Me as More of a Sparring Partner.’

Hall of Fame Trainer Jessie Reid has some surprising words about Al Haymon-managed heavyweight prospect Gerald “El Gallo Negro” Washington (11-0, 8 KOs).

Reid is serving as co-trainer (along with Aaron Navarro) for 6′ 8″ heavyweight Skipp “Strictly Business” Scott (16-1, 10 KOs) in his upcoming fight against Washington in the 10-round co-main event on Thursday, April 3, when Golden Boy Live! presents “Night Of The Heavyweights,” a tripleheader of heavyweight action on FOX Sports 1 and FOX Deportes, from the Fantasy Springs Casino in Indio, California.

“I think he can be outhustled and is somebody we can bang around. He tries to be cute, but he’s not a cutie. Honestly, he strikes me as more of a sparring partner,” said Reid. “If you come in not properly prepared, he can outfight you, but we’re coming in very well-prepared and ready to take it to him and bust his heart.”

Reid, who has handled the careers of such greats as Roger Mayweather, Lamon Brewster, Johnny Tapia, Orlando Canizales, Reggie Johnson and Bruce Curry among the 23 World Champions and over 40 world-rated boxers, says he likes what he sees from Scott.

“I’ve been watching Skipp Scott and he hasn’t lost a fight in seven years. He’s a very big, tough guy. He’s intimidating and he can back it up. You knock him down, he gets back up and I like that. He’s a guy with tons of desire and heart.”

Reid says Scott’s style is perfect for his legendary style of coaching.

“Skipp is a fighter, not a boxer. I can help him with his boxing skills when he needs them, but fighters win by fighting. Boxers use their abilities for defensive moves and they’re very boring at times. I’d rather see somebody who has the boxing skills when they need them, but also be a real finisher with killer instinct. When I look at Skipp Scott, that’s what I see he could be. I’ve worked with plenty of great boxers, but I’m the kind of guy who is a motivator for punchers. I’m excited. Skipp is a real fighter with real heart and I know I can help him.”

In the 10-round main event that night, unbeaten Cuban Luis Ortiz will take on long-time top contender and world-title challenger Monte Barrett and, in the televised opener, 2012 U.S. Olympian Dominic “Trouble” Breazeale will face veteran Nagy Aguilera.

Road to recovery pays off for Harrison-Lombardi

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (March 24th, 2014) — After batting drug addiction for more than nine years and nearly overdosing at the age of 25, Providence, R.I., middleweight boxer KJ Harrison-Lombardi will return to the ring Friday night to continue his remarkable turnaround.

Harrison-Lombardi’s story began more than two decades ago in Providence’s rough Smith Hill neighborhood, where his father urged him to take up karate and boxing as a way to defend himself.

At 13, Harrison-Lombardi (5-0-1) began a promising amateur career that included several regional titles, but soon found himself straying from the path, absorbed by a life on the streets partying, doing drugs and chasing women.

A near-death experience in 2008 and a chance reunion with his former boxing coach brought Harrison-Lombardi back to the sport he loved, but not before more setbacks along the way. Read more about his remarkable recovery in this exclusive interview.

Tickets to Harrison-Lombardi’s 2014 debut on Friday, March 28th at Twin River Casino are priced at $41, $76 and $126 (VIP) and can be purchased by calling 401-724-2253/2254, online at www.cesboxing.com or www.ticketmaster.com, or at the Players Club at Twin River.

Bujaj TKO’s Barragan; becomes new WBC U.S. Cruiserweight Champion

Tacoma, WA (March 23, 2014) – After a back and forth war, Stivens Bujaj (12-0, 9 KOs) prevailed in the seventh round, scoring a TKO at the 1:52 mark in the seventh round of Halquist Productions’ Battle at the Boat 95 main event for the WBC United States Cruiserweight Title. Notable undercard fights include Cameron Sevilla-Rivera (3-0, 3 KOs) scoring his third knockout in as many fights and Jeremy McCleary (3-0) keeping his record undefeated in a very impressive fight against a very game Corben Page (4-9-1).

A sold out crowd was on hand to witness the seven fight Battle at the Boat card and showed tremendous support throughout the night that made for a world class night of boxing.

Bujaj came into the Battle at the Boat 95 main event more confident than ever, publicly stating that he’ll be ready to fight a top ten cruiserweight by the end of 2014 and took the first step into getting his wish, taking on his toughest test yet, Victor Barragan, in what was the first ten round bout ever scheduled for Bujaj.

The fight was very back and forth that featured Barragan pressing the fight and Bujaj contently focusing on his counter punch while showing a very solid uppercut. There were times in the fight where Barragan had Bujaj trapped against the ropes and throwing numerous shots, but Bujaj showed a good chin and elusiveness enabling himself to stay composed. Bujaj was able to punch more efficiently and powerfully, putting Barragan in danger a few times in the early rounds.

At the end of the fifth round, every fan in the 1800 seat showroom stood up and cheered enthusiastically, showing their appreciation of the effort that both Bujaj and Barragan were giving.

As the fight continued Barragan was easily the more roughed up fighter, spitting blood with every punch landing on him, and at the 1:52 mark of the seventh round, Bujaj was able to get the best of Barragan, landing a shot to the chin that buckled Barragan, dropping him in the middle of the ring. Barragan was able to beat the count, but was not able to convince the referee he was able to continue. Bujaj became the new WBC United States Cruiserweight champion with the victory.

On the undercard, Fife, WA’s Cameron Sevilla Rivera put on another display of heavy hands, knocking down his opponent, Juan Carlos Rodriguez, twice within the first two minutes of the first round, the second knockdown taking Rodriguez out for good. Buckley, WA’s Jeremy McCleary faced his toughest test as a pro, but left the showroom victorious winning by majority decision. Official undercard results below:

Jeremy McCleary def. Corben Page MD (38-38)(39-37)(39-37)
Cameron Sevilla-Rivera def. Juan Carlos Rodriguez 1st Round TKO (1:32)
Jared Teer def. Sean Quinnett SD (37-39)(39-37)(40-36)
Harrison Bevens def. Josh Solis 4th Round TKO (2:33)
Jon Jackson def. Jared Torgeson MD (38-38)(40-36)(40-36)

“Coming out victorious in my first pro fight was the goal for me tonight.” said Riviera. “I learned a lot in this fight and I want to thank Gary Shaw for everything. I feel great and it was incredible fighting in front of my people here in Puerto Rico. I’m hoping to get right back in the ring.”

Paredes faced a game opponent in Kevin Vazquez, who was also making his pro debut, but won convincingly. Scorecards read 39-36 across the board for Paredes.

“It was great to come out on top in my first professional fight,” Paredes said. “I’m going to keep working hard, while improving with each fight. Puerto Rican fans are the best and I’m happy to be fighting here at home. My promoter Gary Shaw has plans to keep me busy so I’ll be ready to go when my name is called.”

Pedraza is a member of “Team Puerto Rico”, which is a collaboration between Gary Shaw Productions, DiBella Entertainment and Universal Promotions, made with the goal of gathering the best of Puerto Rico’s boxing talents. Paredes and Rivera are promoted by Gary Shaw Productions.

BROADWAY BOXING RESULTS FROM BROOKLYN

dbe_logo
Brooklyn, NY (3/21/14) – Earlier tonight, DiBella Entertainment presented the latest installment of its ever popular Broadway Boxing series with an exciting eight-bout card from the Aviator Sports and Events Center in Brooklyn, NY.

Fighting before a strong contingent of hometown fans, Brooklyn fan favorite Heather Hardy and the Bronx’s Nydia Feliciano went to war in their eight-round female junior featherweight feature bout. Feliciano was easily the toughest opponent of Hardy’s young career, having already fought for a world title in 2012. Round after round, Hardy and Feliciano furiously brawled, bringing the crowd to a standing ovation on a number of occasions. Hardy was the aggressor and pressed the action for the majority of the bout, and in the end, she was awarded the well-deserved unanimous decision, winning by scores of 79-73, and 78-74 twice. It was the most impressive victory to date for Hardy, who improved to a perfect 9-0, 2KO’s.

Joe Smith (right in photo), 178, Long Island, NY, trained by Tommy Gallagher, brawled with the tough Michael Gbenga, 172, Washington, DC, providing exciting two-way action in their scheduled eight-round light heavyweight contest. Smith applied pressure and focused his attack downstairs. After two rounds of punishment to the body, Gbenga was forced to retire on his stool prior to the start of the third frame, citing a rib injury. With the win, Smith improved to 15-1 (12 KOs), while Gbenga dropped to 13-12 (13 KOs).

Coming off his HBO-televised tough decision-loss to Matthew Macklin, middleweight prospect Lamar Russ, 160, 14-1 (7 KOs), Fayetteville, NC, battled Tony Hirsch, 160, 15-6-2, Oakland, CA. Russ was outboxing Hirsch early on, landing his overhand right behind a crisp jab. As the two boxers were pressing forward, an accidental head butt opened up a cut over Hirsch’s right eye in the first frame. In between rounds, however, the ringside physician determined that Hirsch was in no position to continue. As a result, the bout was declared a No-Contest.

Undefeated junior middleweight prospect Patrick Day needed just 39 seconds to stop Duane King with a picture-perfect left hook to the liver in their scheduled six-round contest. The former #1-rated U.S. amateur came out working behind a long hard jab. He followed up one of those jabs with his left hook, a combination that echoed throughout the building. King went down immediately and had no chance of beating the count. It was an impressive showing for the Freeport, Long Island-native who improved to a perfect 7-0-1, 4KO’s.

Fighting before a loud contingency of fans, Bronx’s Christopher Galeano improved to a perfect 3-0 with a four-round unanimous decision over Azamat Umarzoda in their junior middleweight matchup. Galeano, a former amateur national champion, and co-promoted by 50 Cent’s SMS Promotions, boxed beautifully from the outside, landing crisp combinations to both the body and head. Umarzoda hung tough, but just wasn’t able to keep up with Galeano’s speed. In the end, all three judges scored the bout 39-37 in favor of Galeano.

The exciting and promising junior lightweight Joel Diaz improved to 15-0, 12KO’s, winning a hard-fought six-round unanimous decision over game veteran Jose Angel Beranza. Diaz, trained by Abel Sanchez, pressed the action, landing a number of hard shots against the tough-as-nails Beranza throughout the six-round contest. In the end, all three judges scored the bout in Diaz’ favor with tallies of 60-54, and 59-55 twice.

Making his DBE debut, highly regarded middleweight prospect Eduardo Alicea passed the stiffest test of his young career winning a unanimous six-round decision over James Johnson. Alicea, trained by top trainer Robert Garcia and co-promoted with Rumble Time Promotions, was very sharp and accurate with his shots throughout. Alicea worked behind a stiff jab to control the action from the outside. Johnson, who, like Alicea, was a former amateur standout, was game and showed heart, but just couldn’t seem to keep up with Alicea’s output and crisp combinations. After six frames, Alicea was awarded the victory on scores of 60-54 twice, and 59-55. With the win, Alicea moved to a perfect 6-0, 3KO’s, while the heavy-handed Johnson dropped to 7-2, 7KO’s.

Kicking off the card was Queens-native Joseph Williams taking on P.J. Cajigas in a four-round light heavyweight contest. Williams stalked Cajigas from the opening bell, applying relentless pressure. Williams landed big shots with both hands especially to the body. In the third round, Williams landed a big overhand right, followed by a monstrous left hook that sent Cajigas out flat on this back. The referee didn’t even bother to administer a count and officially waved off the contest at 1:49 of round three. It was an impressive showing for Williams, who improved to 2-0, 2KO’s.

Melendez decisions Gutierrez

Jorge Melendez scored a 10 round unanimous decision over Richard Gutierrez in a Jr. Middleweight bout at the Coliseo Roger L. Mendoza in Caguas, Puerto Rico.

Melendez scored a knockdown in the opening frame from a barrage of punches in the corner. He then cruised the rest of the nine rounds and won by scores of 98-91 and 97-92 twice.

Melendez, 154 lbs of Maniti, PR is now 28-3-1. Gutierrez, 153 lbs is now 27-1-3-1.

Lightweight Felix Verdejo scored a 3rd round knockout over Juan Santiago in a scheduled 6 round bout.

Verdejo connected on a perfect right to the chin that sent Santiago to the canvas and the fight was stopped at 1:26 of round three.

Verdejo, 134 lbs of Puerto Rico is now 11-o with 8 knockouts. Santiago, 133 lbs of Denver is now 14-12-1.

Antonio Ortiz scored a 4 round split decision over Julio Santos in a Jr. Welterweight bout.

Ortiz won two cards 39-37 while Santos won every round (40-36) on the third card.

Ortiz, 142 lbs is 5-0. Santos, 140 lbs was making his pro debut.

Tostado decisions Vidal

Antonio Tostado scored a 10 round majority decision over Jonathan Vidal in a Bantamweight bout at the A La Carter Event Pavilion in Tampa, Florida.

Tostado won by scores of 96-94 twice and 95-95 and is now 13-1. Vidal is 17-2.

Martirosyan decisions Lozano

Vanes_Martirosyan
Former two-time world title challenger Vanes Martirosyan scored a 10 round unanimous decision over Mario Lozano at the Morango Resort & Spa in Cabazon, California.

Martirosyan dominated with boxing through out and scored a knockdown in round two from a straight right hand.

He went on to win 100-89 on all judges score cards. Martirosyan, 154 lbs of Glendale, CA is now 34-1-1. Lozano, 153 3/4 lbs is 28-5.

Former world title challenger Anthony Peterson scored a 10 round unanimous decision over Marcos Jimenez in a Lightweight bout.

Scores were 100-90, 99-91 and 98-92 for Peterson, 135 lbs of Washington, DC and is now 33-1. Jimenez, 132 lbs of the Dominican Republic and is now 20-5.

FORMER WORLD TITLE CHALLENGER MONTE BARRETT STEPS UP TO FACE UNBEATEN LUIS ORTIZ IN “NIGHT OF THE HEAVYWEIGHTS” MAIN EVENT ON THURSDAY, APRIL 3 FROM FANTASY SPRINGS RESORT CASINO & LIVE ON FOX SPORTS 1 AND FOX DEPORTES

INDIO, CALIF. (Mar. 21) – The April 3 FOX Sports 1 and FOX Deportes tripleheader is now complete, as former heavyweight world title challenger Monte “Two Gunz” Barrett returns to the ring to face unbeaten Cuban contender Luis “The Real King Kong” Ortiz in the main event of the highly anticipated “Night of the Heavyweights” Golden Boy Live! event at Fantasy Springs Resort Casino in Indio, Calif.

In previously announced televised heavyweight bouts, Vallejo, California’s Gerald “El Gallo Negro” Washington risks his perfect professional record in the 10-round co-main event against Houston’ Skipp “Strictly Business” Scott and 2012 U.S. Olympian Dominic “Trouble” Breazeale goes for 10 straight wins when he takes on veteran standout Nagy Aguilera.

Plus, unbeaten rising star Diego “The Golden Kid” De La Hoya will appear in a six-round junior featherweight bout and exciting prospects Santiago “El Lobito” Guevara, Neeco “The Rooster” Macias, Michael Hunter and Stephan Shaw will also be seeing action on this stacked card.

Fight fans in attendance at Fantasy Springs are in for a special treat as former heavyweight contender Gerry “Gentleman” Cooney will be on hand as a special VIP guest to meet and greet those at the event. One of the hardest punchers in heavyweight history, Cooney is best remembered for his knockout wins over Ken Norton, Ron Lyle and Jimmy Young, as well as his epic 1982 challenge for Larry Holmes’ title.

Currently ranked number two in the world by the WBA, 34-year-old southpaw Luis “The Real King Kong” Ortiz (20-0, 17 KOs) graduated from the legendary Cuban amateur boxing program with nearly 350 wins and numerous titles. When he turned professional in his adopted home state of Florida in 2010, he set his sights on gold of a different sort; a heavyweight world championship. Thus far, Ortiz has been unstoppable with five-of-his-last-six wins coming by way of knockout, making it clear that he will take out anyone in the way of his pursuit of a title.

Equipped with top-level heavyweight experience few can match on the current landscape, Queens, New York’s Monte Barrett (35-10-2, 20 KOs) has been in the ring with the best of the best over the course of his career, including Wladimir Klitschko, Tim Witherspoon, Hasim Rahman, David Haye and David Tua. Eager to get back in the heavyweight race, Barrett has specialized in spoiling the rise of the highly-touted, handing Dominick Guinn, Owen Beck, Eric Kirkland and Tye Fields crushing losses. He hopes to add Ortiz to that list on April 3.

An elite level prospect that has made an impression in each of his fights to date, Mexicali’s Diego “The Golden Kid” De La Hoya (3-0, 3 KOs) has shown remarkable skills and power in his knockout wins over Luis Cosme, Abraham Rubio and Sergio Najera. On April 3, the 19-year-old will meet an opponent to be named in a six-round junior featherweight bout.

One of the newest members of the Golden Boy Promotions team, Mexico-born junior lightweight Santiago “El Lobito” Guevara (6-0, 3 KOs) is a talented fighter with a bright future in the fight game. Scheduled for a six round bout on April 3, the Los Angeles resident is ready to impress fans at Fantasy Springs.

Palm Desert’s Neeco “The Rooster” Macias (3-0, 1 KO) is an action fighter who loves to scrap when the bell rings. In February, the southpaw won his third professional fight, decisioning Victor Altamirano in four rounds, the same length of his junior middleweight bout this April.

“Night of the Heavyweights” will live up to its name as the night will with two more heavyweight showdowns. In a heavyweight bout scheduled for six rounds, Van Nuys’ Michael Hunter (3-0, 3 KOs) will be seeking yet another knockout when he faces Jackson, Tennessee’s Rodrigo Ray (5-6-1, 2 KOs), and in the opener scheduled for four rounds in the heavyweight division, St. Louis’ Stephan Shaw (2-0, 2 KOs) will look for victory number three.

Opponents for De La Hoya, Guevara, Macias and Hunter will be announced shortly.

“Night Of The Heavyweights” is presented by Golden Boy Promotions and sponsored by Corona and O’Reilly Auto Parts. The Fantasy Springs Event Center doors open at 4:00 p.m. PT and the first fight starts at 5:00 p.m. PT. The FOX Sports 1 and FOX Deportes broadcast airs live at 10:00 p.m. ET/7:00 p.m. PT.

Iron Mike Productions Teams With Gleason’s Gym for Newest Location

BROOKLYN, NY (March 21, 2014) – Iron Mike Productions (IMP) and Gleason’s Gym are joining forces in efforts to revitalize the New York boxing scene. The world famous gym – located on 77 Front Street in Brooklyn, NY – that once housed a young man who would go on to become the youngest heavyweight champion in boxing history will now serve as headquarters for IMP to recruit local amateur fighters aspiring to enter the pro ranks.

IMP plans to officially open its office doors at its new location in April.

“The combination of Gleason’s Gym and Mike Tyson is sure to make an impact in the boxing community,” stated Bruce Silverglade, owner of Gleason’s Gym, the oldest boxing gym in the United States. “The Recruitment Center will be a magnet for top prospects from around the world.”

The launching will come right before the semifinal and final rounds of the 2014 Daily News Golden Gloves, an annual amateur boxing tournament. The finals will take place April 16-17 at Barclays Center in Brooklyn. It’s a given that Tyson and his team will be paying close attention to the results.

“The opening of this recruitment center could not have come at a better time,” noted Jose Nuñez, a local boxing manager whose clients include reigning 130-pound world titlist Argenis Mendez, former two-time world champion Joan Guzman and a slew of rising young fighters. “This collaboration will not only help bring local fighters to the gym, but make them step up their game. We’re looking for the best fighters of the area to represent our brand in the pro ranks. When fighters come to Gleason’s, they’ll know they have to bring their best every time they’re ready to train.”

IBF junior lightweight world champion Argenis Mendez

Nuñez Management will serve as an integral part of the recruiting process for IMP, given the manager’s local roots.

The location hits home for Tyson, one of 133 champions (male and female) from past and present to have at one point trained at Gleason’s Gym. Tyson was born and raised in Brooklyn before being taken in by Cus D’Amato at age 16, with boxing serving as his lone salvation amidst a childhood littered with petty crimes, frequent arrests and time spent in reform school.

Now comes the Hall of Famer’s chance to once again give back.

“Iron Mike Productions is very excited about establishing our presence in the New York boxing community by partnering up with Gleason’s Gym,” said Azim Spicer, Vice President of Iron Mike Productions. “It’s a great opportunity to monitor and assist boxers to strive for their goals in the amateur and professional ranks.”

About Iron Mike Productions (IMP): Founded in 2013 by CEO Garry Jonas and Hall of Famer Mike Tyson, Iron Mike Productions is a full-service boxing promotional company with offices located in Deerfield Beach, Florida and Las Vegas, Nevada. IMP is committed to changing traditional boxing promotion by advocating for its fighters’ successes, inside the ring and out, throughout their professional careers and into retirement.

About Gleason’s Gym: One of the sport’s grandest institutions and among the last of New York City’s thriving boxing gyms, Gleason’s Gym is owned and operated by Bruce Silverglade. Gleason’s has served as training headquarters for some of the sports biggest legends, including Muhammad Ali, Roberto Duran and Jake LaMotta. All told, more than 130 World Champions have trained inside the hallow walls of the Brooklyn landmark.

About Nuñez Management: Jose Nuñez has been involved in the sport since the late 1990’s before forming and serving as CEO of Nuñez Management in 2006. The New York-based manager, whose company also manages several notable music acts, has guided four fighters to world championships to date, including reigning 130 pound world champion Argenis Mendez and former two-division world champion Joan Guzman. Both fighters still serve under the managerial banner, along with a trio unbeaten prospects – junior welterweight Felix Diaz, who captured Olympic gold for the 2008 Dominican Republic boxing squad, light heavyweight Lenin Castillo, and junior middleweight Dominique Dolton – among several other rising prospects from the U.S. and Dominican Republic.

WBO Orders Lomachenko – Russell vacant title fight

GaryRussellWins300
According to Dan Rafael of espn.com, the WBO has ordered a Featherweight title fight between Gary Russell Jr. and Vasyl Lomachenko.

The sides have 30 days to negotiate a deal or the fight will put up for a purse bid, which is likely because Lomachenko is promoted by Top Rank and Russell is with its bitter rival, Golden Boy Promotions, and they do not negotiate fights with each other.

“We are in the position where we are getting a second shot at the title and we are very happy,” Egis Klimas, Lomachenko’s manager, told ESPN.com. “I already spoke to our promoter, Bob Arum, and asked him to arrange the fight. If the negotiations are not going to go on, our promoter is willing to go into a purse bid. Lomachenko has nothing to lose after fighting Salido. The question is, will Russell fight Lomachenko?

“Lomachenko made such a big announcement by fighting Salido that to take a step back in competition and take the easy way — it would be nonsense.”

“[It will be a] very interesting process to see if the fight gets made, or goes to purse bid,” Top Rank vice president Carl Moretti said. “I told Lomachenko after the Salido fight, ‘The past is behind you, learn from it. The future is ahead, prepare for it and the future could be Russell for vacant title.’ Lomachenko is on board 110 percent.”

Golden Boy Promotions chief executive Richard Schaefer said he received the letter from the WBO and would talk to Russell adviser Al Haymon to see what they wanted to do about the fight.

“I have to discuss it with Gary’s team and see how we want to go about it, but I think it’s a very interesting matchup,” Schaefer said. “Gary has been waiting for a world title shot for a while. I will talk to them next week. Maybe we can make it happen. Maybe it won’t. Maybe it will go to a purse bid. It’s a fight we’d like to do.”
